The poor quality of effluent discharged by municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is threatening the safety of water ecology. This study, which integrated a field survey, batch tests, and microbial community identification, was designed to improve the effectiveness of the enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) process for WWTPs. Over two-thirds of the investigated WWTPs could not achieve total P in effluent lower than 0.5 mg/L, mainly due to the high ratio of chemical oxygen demand to P (28.6-196.2) in the influent. The rates of anaerobic P release and aerobic P uptake for the activated sludge varied from 0.22 to 7.9 mg/g VSS/h and 0.43 to 8.11 mg/g VSS/h, respectively. The fraction of Accumulibacter (PAOs: polyphosphate accumulating organisms) was 4.8 ± 2.0% of the total biomass, while Competibacter (GAOs: glycogen-accumulating organisms) accounted for 4.8 ± 6.4%. The anaerobic P-release rate was found to be an effective indicator of EBPR. Four classifications of the principal components were identified to improve the EBPR effluent quality and sludge activity.  相似文献

The performance of a pilot-scale biological nutrient removal process has been evaluated for 336 days, receiving the real municipal wastewater with a flowrate of 6.8 m3/d. The process incorporated an intermittent aeration reactor for enhancing the effluent quality, and a nitrification reactor packed with the porous polyurethane foam media for supporting the attached-growth of microorganism responsible for nitrification. The observation shows that the process enabled a relatively stable and high performance in both organics and nutrient removals. When the SRT was maintained at 12 days, COD, nitrogen, and phosphorus removals averaged as high as 89% at a loading rate of 0.42–3.95 kg COD/m3 d (corresponding to average influent concentration of 304 mg COD/L), 76% at the loading rate of 0.03–0.27 kg N/m3 d (with 37.1 mg TN/L on average), and 95% at the loading rate of 0.01–0.07 kg TP/m3 d (with 5.4 mg TP/L on average), respectively.  相似文献

In this study, the abundance and sequences of amoA genes of ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and bacteria (AOB) were determined in seven wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) whose ammonium concentrations in influent and effluent wastewaters varied considerably (5.6-422.3 mgN l−1 and 0.2-29.2 mgN l−1, respectively). Quantitative real-time PCR showed that the comparative abundance of AOA and AOB amoA genes differed among the WWTPs. In all three industrial WWTPs, where the influent and effluent contained the higher levels of ammonium (36.1-422.3 mgN l−1 and 5.3-29.2 mgN l−1, respectively), more than four orders of magnitude higher numbers of AOB amoA genes than AOA amoA genes arose (with less than the limit of detection of AOA amoA genes). In contrast, significant numbers of AOA amoA genes occurred in all municipal WWTPs (with ammonium levels in the influent and effluent of 5.6-11.0 mgN l−1 and 0.2-3.0 mgN l−1, respectively). Statistical analysis suggested that compared to other plants’ parameters, the ammonium levels in the plants’ effluent showed correlation with the highest p value to the abundance of AOA amoA genes.  相似文献

A laboratory-scale hybrid-denitrification filter (HDF) was designed by combining a plant material digester and a denitrification filter into a single unit for the removal of nitrate and phosphorus from glasshouse hydroponic wastewater. The carbon to nitrate (C:N) ratio for efficient operation of the HDF was calculated to be 1.93:1 and the COD/BOD5 ratio was 1.2:1. When the HDF was continuously operated with the plant material replaced every 2 days and 100% internal recirculation of the effluent, a high level of nitrate removal (320–5 mg N/L, >95% removal) combined with a low effluent sBOD5 concentration (<5 mg/L) was consistently achieved. Moreover, phosphate concentrations in the effluent were maintained below 7.5 mg P/L (>81% reduction). This study demonstrates the potential to combine a digester and a denitrification filter in a single unit to efficiently remove nitrate and phosphate from hydroponic wastewater in a single unit.  相似文献

A two-continuous mesophilic (37 ± 2 °C) UASB system with step-feed was investigated as an attractive optimization strategy for enhancing COD and total phenols removal of the system and improving aerobic biodegradability of real coal gasification wastewater. Through the step-feed period, the maximum removal efficiencies of COD and total phenols reached 55-60% and 58-63% respectively in the system, at an influent flow distribution ratio of 0.2 and influent COD concentration of 2500 mg/L; the corresponding efficiencies were at low levels of 45-50% and 43-50% respectively at total HRT of 48 h during the single-feed period. The maximum specific methanogenic activity and substrate utilization rate were 592 ± 16 mg COD-CH4/(gVSS d) and 89 ± 12 mg phenol/(gVSS d) during the step-feed operation. After the anaerobic digestion with step-feed, the aerobic effluent COD concentration decreased from 270 ± 9 to 215 ± 10 mg/L. The results suggested that step-feed enhanced the degradation of refractory organics in the second reactor.  相似文献

The subsurface wastewater infiltration (SWI) system proved to be an effective and low-cost technique for decentralized sewage treatment in areas without adequate domestic treatment facilities. Field-scale experiments were conducted through a deep SWI system, with effective depth of 1.5 m, under hydraulic loading rates of 0.040, 0.065, 0.081 and 0.10 m3/m2 d. Taking the hydraulic and treatment efficiencies into consideration, the hydraulic loading rate of 0.081 m3/m2 d was recommended. Under this condition, NH3-N, TN, and COD removal efficiencies were 86.2 ± 3.0, 80.7 ± 1.9 and 84.8 ± 2.1%, respectively. In the effluent, NH3-N concentration declined to 2.3-4.4 mg/L, accounting for 63.2-65.6% of TN. NO3-N concentration increased from 0.2 to 0.3 mg/L in the influent to 2.0-2.5 mg/L in the effluent. The nitrifying bacteria number declined with increased depth, while the amount of denitrifying bacteria increased. The analysis of results about the nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria distribution indicated that the most effective ranges for nitrification and denitrification process were 0.3-0.7 m and 0.7-1.5 m, respectively.  相似文献

To achieve an appropriate mixture of ammonium and nitrite for anaerobic ammonium oxidation (ANAMMOX), 50% partial nitritation was optimized in a fixed bed biofilm reactor treating synthetic wastewater. Results suggested that 50% partial nitritation could be achieved by stepwise increases of influent NH4+-N at pH of 7.8 ± 0.2, temperature of 30 ± 1 °C and dissolved oxygen (DO) of 0.5-0.8 mg l−1. Hydraulic retention time (HRT) and influent alkalinity did significantly affect partial nitritation. At HRT 12 h, 50% partial nitritation could be kept stable, regardless of influent NH4+-N variation, by controlling the influent HCO3/NH4+ molar ratio at 1:1. The fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) results indicated the abundance of evolution of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and the nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) coincided well with the performance of partial nitritation. Furthermore, the AOB were highly affiliated with Nitrosomonas spp. and Nitrosospira spp. dominated (64.1%) in the biofilm with a compact structure during the stable 50% partial nitritation period.  相似文献

Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), a method of artificial intelligence method, provide effective predictive models for complex processes. Three independent ANN models trained with back-propagation algorithm were developed to predict effluent chemical oxygen demand (COD), suspended solids (SS) and aeration tank mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) concentrations of the Ankara central wastewater treatment plant. The appropriate architecture of ANN models was determined through several steps of training and testing of the models. ANN models yielded satisfactory predictions. Results of the root mean square error, mean absolute error and mean absolute percentage error were 3.23, 2.41 mg/L and 5.03% for COD; 1.59, 1.21 mg/L and 17.10% for SS; 52.51, 44.91 mg/L and 3.77% for MLSS, respectively, indicating that the developed model could be efficiently used. The results overall also confirm that ANN modelling approach may have a great implementation potential for simulation, precise performance prediction and process control of wastewater treatment plants.  相似文献

To determine whether functional stability was correlated with a stable microbial community structure in a functionally stable pilot-scale wastewater treatment plant, bacterial communities in the system were monitored over a one-year period. Bacterial community dynamics was characterized by the terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) of 16S rRNA genes. During the study period, the effluent BOD concentrations were very stable, with the average BOD concentration below 10 mg/L. The effluent TN concentrations were always below 20 mg/L, except for the first 40 days. T-RFLP results showed that, during the test period, the bacterial community structures were not stable, with an average change rate (every 15 days) of 20.4% ± 11.2%. Based on Lorenz distribution curves, it was observed that 20% of the species corresponded with 40-77% of cumulative relative abundances. Results clearly revealed that, in the pilot-scale wastewater treatment plant, functional stability did not correlate with stable bacterial communities.  相似文献

Pilot-scale constructed wetlands (CW) were constructed and operated to treat pre-treated olive mill wastewater. Pilot-scale units comprising three identical series with four pilot-scale vertical flow CWs were operated for one harvest season in a Greek olive mill plant. The pilot-scale CWs were filled with various porous media (i.e., cobble, gravel, and sand) of different gradations. Two series of pilot-scale units were planted with common reeds and the third (control) was unplanted. Mean influent concentrations were 14,120 mg/L, 2841 mg/L, 95 mg/L, 123 mg/L and 506 mg/L for COD, phenols, ortho-phosphate, ammonia and TKN, respectively. Despite the rather high influent concentrations, the performance of the CW units was very effective since it achieved removals of about 70%, 70%, 75% and 87% for COD, phenols, TKN and ortho-phosphate, respectively. COD, phenol and TKN removal seems to be significantly higher in the planted series, while ortho-phosphate removal shows no significant differences among the three series. Temperature and pollutant surface load seem to affect the removal efficiency of all pollutants. Compared to previous studies, pollutant surface loads applied here were higher (by one or two orders of magnitude). Even though high removal efficiencies were achieved, effluent pollutant concentrations remained high, thus preventing their use for irrigation or immediate disposal into the environment.  相似文献

A submerged bio-film process was studied as a tertiary treatment to decrease the BOD of secondary effluent from a combined chemical-biological treatment of high-strength wastewater to below the permitted limit (30 mg/l) for waste facilities in Japan. The operational conditions to keep the final effluent below 30 mg/l of BOD were as follows: the influent BOD to the bio-film tank should be under 300 mg/l and a BOD-surface loading should be below 2 g/m2/d. The influent pH of 9.0–12.5 did not affect the treatment efficiency unfavorably. Acclimation is the compensating factor for variations of pH in this process. Removal rates of suspended solids were not influenced by BOD-surface loading. The calculated BOD removal coefficient was 2.57 × 10−5 when the influent BOD was below 300 mg/l.  相似文献

Anaerobic bioreactors supplemented with membrane technology have become quite popular, owing to their favorable energy recovery characteristics. In this study, a lab-scale anaerobic Membrane Bioreactor (AnMBR) was assessed in experimental treatments of pre-settled dilute municipal wastewater obtained from a full-scaled wastewater treatment plant. The MBR system was operated in continuous flow mode for 440 days. To evaluate the performance of the AnMBR under various loading rates, the hydraulic retention time (HRT) was reduced in a stepwise manner (from 2 to 0.5 days). Afterward, the mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) were reduced from 7,000 to 3,000 mg/L in increments of 1,000 mg/L, resulting in a decrease in solids retention time (SRT) at a constant HRT of 1.0 day. The soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) concentration in the feed varied between 38 and 131 mg/L, whereas the average permeate SCOD ranged between 18 and 37 mg/L, reflecting excellent effluent quality. The AnMBR performance in terms of COD removal proved stable, despite variations in influent characteristics and HRT and SRT changes. The concentration of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) was reduced with decreases in HRT from 42 to 22 mg VS/mg of MLSS, thereby indicating that the increased biomass concentration biodegraded the EPS at lower HRTs. AnMBR is, therefore, demonstrably a feasible option for the treatment of dilute wastewater with separate stage nitrogen and phosphorus removal processes.  相似文献

In this study, the performance of the anoxic filter bed and biological wriggle bed-ozone biological aerated filter (AFB-BWB-O3-BAF) process treating real textile dyeing wastewater was investigated. After more than 2 month process operation, the average effluent COD concentration of the AFB, BWB, O3-BAF were 704.8 mg/L, 294.6 mg/L and 128.8 mg/L, with HRT being 8.1-7.7 h, 9.2 h and 5.45 h, respectively. Results showed that the effluent COD concentration of the AFB decreased with new carriers added and the average removal COD efficiency was 20.2%. During operation conditions, HRT of the BWB and O3-BAF was increased, resulting in a decrease in the effluent COD concentration. However, on increasing the HRT, the COD reduction capability expressed by the unit carrier COD removal loading of the BWB reactor increased, while that of the O3-BAF reactor decreased. This study is a beneficial attempt to utilize the AFB-BWB-O3-BAF combine process for textile wastewater treatment.  相似文献

An investigation was performed on the biological removal of ammonium nitrogen from synthetic wastewater by the simultaneous nitrification/denitrification (SND) process, using a sequencing batch biofilm reactor (SBBR). System behavior was analyzed as to the effects of sludge type used as inoculum (autotrophic/heterotrophic), wastewater feed strategy (batch/fed-batch) and aeration strategy (continuous/intermittent). The presence of an autotrophic aerobic sludge showed to be essential for nitrification startup, despite publications stating the existence of heterotrophic organisms capable of nitrifying organic and inorganic nitrogen compounds at low dissolved oxygen concentrations. As to feed strategy, batch operation (synthetic wastewater containing 100 mg COD/L and 50 mg N-NH(4)(+)/L) followed by fed-batch (synthetic wastewater with 100 mg COD/L) during a whole cycle seemed to be the most adequate, mainly during the denitrification phase. Regarding aeration strategy, an intermittent mode, with dissolved oxygen concentration of 2.0mg/L in the aeration phase, showed the best results. Under these optimal conditions, 97% of influent ammonium nitrogen (80% of total nitrogen) was removed at a rate of 86.5 mg N-NH(4)(+)/Ld. In the treated effluent only 0.2 mg N-NO(2)(-)/L,4.6 mg N-NO(3)(-)/L and 1.0 mg N-NH(4)(+)/L remained, demonstrating the potential viability of this process in post-treatment of wastewaters containing ammonium nitrogen.  相似文献

A membrane-aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) was developed to degrade acetonitrile (ACN) in aqueous solutions. The reactor was seeded with an adapted activated sludge consortium as the inoculum and operated under step increases in ACN loading rate through increasing ACN concentrations in the influent. Initially, the MABR started at a moderate selection pressure, with a hydraulic retention time of 16 h, a recirculation rate of 8 cm/s and a starting ACN concentration of 250 mg/l to boost the growth of the biofilm mass on the membrane and to avoid its loss by hydraulic washout. The step increase in the influent ACN concentration was implemented once ACN concentration in the effluent showed almost complete removal in each stage. The specific ACN degradation rate achieved the highest at the loading rate of 101.1 mg ACN/g-VSS h (VSS, volatile suspended solids) and then declined with the further increases in the influent ACN concentration, attributed to the substrate inhibition effect. The adapted membrane-aerated biofilm was capable of completely removing ACN at the removal capacity of up to 21.1 g ACN/m2 day, and generated negligible amount of suspended sludge in the effluent. Batch incubation experiments also demonstrated that the ACN-degrading biofilm can degrade other organonitriles, such as acrylonitrile and benzonitrile as well. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis studies showed that the ACN-degrading biofilms contained a stable microbial population with a low diversity of sequence of community 16S rRNA gene fragments. Specific oxygen utilization rates were found to increase with the increases in the biofilm thickness, suggesting that the biofilm formation process can enhance the metabolic degradation efficiency towards ACN in the MABR. The study contributes to a better understanding in microbial adaptation in a MABR for biodegradation of ACN. It also highlights the potential benefits in using MABRs for biodegradation of organonitrile contaminants in industrial wastewater.  相似文献

Lurgi coal gasification wastewater (LCGW) is a refractory wastewater, whose anaerobic treatment has been a severe problem due to its toxicity and poor biodegradability. Using a mesophilic (35 ± 2 °C) reactor as a control, thermophilic anaerobic digestion (55 ± 2 °C) of LCGW was investigated in a UASB reactor. After 120 days of operation, the removal of COD and total phenols by the thermophilic reactor could reach 50-55% and 50-60% respectively, at an organic loading rate of 2.5 kg COD/(m3 d) and HRT of 24 h; the corresponding efficiencies were both only 20-30% in the mesophilic reactor. After thermophilic digestion, the wastewater concentrations of the aerobic effluent COD could reach below 200 mg/L compared with around 294 mg/L if mesophilic digestion was done and around 375 mg/L if sole aerobic pretreatment was done. The results suggested that thermophilic anaerobic digestion improved significantly both anaerobic and aerobic biodegradation of LCGW.  相似文献

Phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) profiles in four full-scale activated sludge reactors (ASR1 ~ 4) treating municipal wastewater, South Korea, were monitored to evaluate the influence of influent water quality on microbial community structure (MCS) and the effect of the MCS on effluent water quality. In ASR1 ~ 3, PLFA profiles were very similar, regardless of the influent water quality and seasonal differences, and 16:17c/15:0iso2OH and 16:0 were dominant. PLFA profiles in ASR4 during summer and autumn were very similar to those in ASR1 ~ 3, but increases in specific fatty acids, 16:1ω5c, 11methyl18:1ω7c and 15:0iso3OH, were found in ASR4 during winter and spring, with relatively high total suspended solid (TSS) concentrations in the effluent. 16:1ω5c and 15:0iso3OH, possibly related with Flexibacter sp., caused a bulking problem in the activated sludge. The community diversity indices such as Shannon diversity and equability decreased in summer but increased in autumn in all the ASRs. Canonical correspondence analysis results suggested that the influent BOD concentration played the most important role in changing MCS, followed by influent TSS concentration. In addition, the TSS and total phosphorus concentrations in the effluent were significantly affected by the change of the MCS.  相似文献

This study investigated three lab-scale hybrid wetland systems with traditional (gravel) and alternative substrates (wood mulch and zeolite) for removing organic, inorganic pollutants and coliforms from a synthetic wastewater, in order to investigate the efficiency of alternative substrates, and monitor the stability of system performance. The hybrid systems were operated under controlled variations of hydraulic load (q, 0.3-0.9 m3/m2 d), influent ammoniacal nitrogen (NH4-N, 22.0-80.0 mg/L), total nitrogen (TN, 24.0-84.0 mg/L) and biodegradable organics concentration (BOD5, 14.5-102.0 mg/L). Overall, mulch and zeolite showed promising prospect as wetland substrates, as both media enhanced the removal of nitrogen and organics. Average NH4-N, TN and BOD5 removal percentages were over 99%, 72% and 97%, respectively, across all three systems, indicating stable removal performances regardless of variable operating conditions. Higher Escherichia coli removal efficiencies (99.9%) were observed across the three systems, probably due to dominancy of aerobic conditions in vertical wetland columns of the hybrid systems.  相似文献

The effect of addition of organic carbon sources (acetic acid and waste activated sludge alkaline fermentation liquid) on anaerobic–aerobic (low dissolved oxygen, 0.15–0.45 mg/L) biological municipal wastewater treatment was investigated. The results showed that carbon source addition affected not only the transformations of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), glycogen, nitrogen and phosphorus, but the net removal of nitrogen and phosphorus. The removal efficiencies of TN and TP were, respectively, 61% and 61% without organic carbon source addition, 81% and 95% with acetic acid addition, and 83% and 97% with waste activated sludge alkaline fermentation liquid addition. It seems that the alkaline fermentation liquid of waste biosolids generated in biological wastewater treatment plant can be used to replace acetic acid as an additional carbon source to improve the anaerobic–aerobic (low dissolved oxygen) municipal wastewater nutrients removal although its use was observed to cause a slight increase of effluent BOD and COD concentrations.  相似文献

A shortcut biological nitrogen removal (SBNR) process converts ammonium directly through nitrite to nitrogen gas, thus requiring less aeration and carbon. We evaluated a hybrid SBNR (HSBNR) reactor containing an anoxic tank followed by an aerobic tank and a settling tank. The aerobic tank was filled with polyvinyl alcohol sponge media (20%, v/v) to attach and retain ammonium oxidizers. Two configurations of the HSBNR reactor were tested for treating a wastewater with high strength ammonium and organic electron donor. The HSNBR reactors accumulated nitrite stably for 1.5 years and maintained a high free ammonia (FA) concentration (20–25 mg/L) and a low dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration (<1 mg/L) in the aerobic tank. Apparently, the biofilm carriers increased the solids retention time (SRT) for ammonium oxidizers, while high FA and low DO selected against nitrite oxidizers and promoted direct denitrification of nitrite in the aerobic tank. The significant amount of chemical oxygen demand (COD) was removed by shortcut denitrification of nitrite in the anoxic tank.  相似文献
