This study focused on the potential of specific leaf area, stomatal density and stomatal pore surface as easy-to-measure plant parameters in low cost biomonitoring of urban habitat quality with a high spatial resolution. The study area (81.5 km2) was the city of Gent, Belgium. In the study area 148 sampling locations were identified within 4 land use classes. Specific leaf area, stomatal density, stomatal pore surface, minimal stomatal resistance, chlorophyll a and b, C and N content, δ13C and δ15N in the leaf samples of a common herbaceous plant Taraxacum officinalis were measured. The stomatal pore surface and minimal stomatal resistance of T. officinalis varied significantly between land use classes. In the harbor and industry land use class and the urban land use class a 27% and 21% lower mean stomatal pore surface at the abaxial leaf surface, and a 29% and 27% lower mean stomatal pore surface at the adaxial leaf surface was observed compared to that in the pasture land use class. The minimal stomatal resistance at the abaxial leaf surface was significantly higher in the urban land use class and harbor and industry land use class by 28% and 29%, respectively compared to that in the pasture land use class. In addition, urbanized and industrial land use classes as the harbour and industry and the urban land use classes showed significantly lower δ13C values compared to pasture land use class. The specific leaf area, stomatal parameters and δ13C data were geostatistically analyzed to understand their spatial variation. The spatial distributions of stomatal pore surface and minimal stomatal resistance varied considerably across the study area, indicating a different habitat quality from the harbour area in the north, over the city centre in the middle and the industrial areas in the south, compared to off city areas. Spatial patterns of δ13C showed depleted δ13C levels in city areas indicating the diluted δ13C in the urban atmosphere by fuel combustion. We concluded that stomatal characteristics seem to be the most promising parameter for estimating urban habitat quality.  相似文献

Many air pollutants cause plant deterioration. In this study pollen viability was used as bio-indicator of air quality. The study was carried out in the city of Perugia where road traffic is the most important cause of air pollution. Three areas, with different intensity of road traffic (very high, medium and absent) but all characterized by the presence of the same plant species, were selected. Eight species were studied: Hedera helix L., Convolvulus sepium L., Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers., Quercus ilex L., Dactylis glomerata L., Parietaria diffusa M. et K., Daucus carota L. and Tilia cordata Miller. The pollen of these species was treated with TTC (2, 3, 5 Tryphenil-Tetrazolium-Chloride) staining solution and viability was then estimated by light microscopy. The results showed that the pollen viability was inversely proportioned with pollution. The highest difference in pollen viability between the areas was registered in Tilia cordata. Quercus ilex instead showed that there was no difference in pollen viability between the three different areas. Parietaria diffusa showed a particular behaviour; the highest pollen viability percentage was in polluted areas. The statistical analysis (ANOVA) showed that the main source of variability of the pollen viability depends on the plant but also the site and the interaction between plant and site were very important with a high significant level (p < 0.0001). 通过对上海城市绿化带6种典型环境土壤的调查,研究了城市绿化带土壤蜱螨目和其它小节肢类土壤动物的群落结构及其与土壤环境的关系。结果表明:城市绿化带土壤蜱螨目群落结构特征在很大程度上有别于自然土壤和农业土壤,反映了城市绿化带为一新型生态系统;城市绿化带土壤质量较差,但土壤蜱螨目仍然保持了较高的种类丰富度和密度,是恶劣环境评价的较好指示生物类群;除蜱螨目密度和种类丰富度外,甲螨亚目的无翼类、低等类和中气门亚目的种类丰富度和密度以及中气门亚目雌雄性比对环境变化敏感,且这些指标特征对不同环境土壤质量的评价结果基本一致,是较好的生物指标。  相似文献

植物形态结构是植物本身与外部环境共同作用的结果。为了分析木棉树形结构与叶性状的相关关系,探索地形、土壤和气象要素对木棉生长的影响,以及揭示木棉的生长策略和适应机制,该文以云南省西双版纳国家级自然保护区内230棵木棉为研究对象,测定6个树形结构指标,8个叶性状指标以及所在区域地形、气象、土壤养分等生境要素,使用结构方程模型和变差分解分析各生境要素对木棉树形结构和叶性状的影响和解释度。结果表明:(1)木棉树形结构各观测指标之间、叶性状各观测指标之间存在相关性(P<0.05)。(2)生境要素各观测指标对木棉生长具有较强影响,其中年均降雨量、坡度、平均温度对木棉生长指标的解释率较高,是影响木棉生长的主要生境指标。(3)从标准化路径系数看,3个生境要素对木棉树形结构和叶性状影响具有一致性,均表现为地形要素>气象要素>土壤要素。(4)3个生境要素叠加解释了树形结构和叶性状分别为43.5%和12.3%,表现出树形结构对生境环境的响应大于叶性状对环境响应的特点。研究结果初步探明了木棉不同生长指标对环境要素的适应策略,为木棉在异质生境的培育、繁殖以及木棉人工林高效经营等提供了理论依据和实践参考。  相似文献

The effects of superficial wax on leaf wettability   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
Experiments are described which provide more information on the role played by superficial waxes in the natural water-repellency of leaf surfaces. Contact angles of water were measured on a variety of leaf surfaces, before and after removal of wax, and on smooth films of the isolated superficial waxes. The differences in wettability of leaf surfaces are not wholly accounted for by differences which occur in the chemical and hydrophobic properties of their superficial waxes. Waxes isolated from leaves exhibiting contact angles less than 90° are usually more hydrophobic than the leaf surface itself. On most leaves exhibiting angles greater than 90° wax is the dominant factor governing water-repellency, the isolated wax normally making at least a 60 % contribution to the contact angle measured on the leaf surface. Additional factors, such as roughness, responsible for the occurrence of contact angles greater than 110° on certain leaf surfaces, reside in the wax layer. The hydrophobic properties of some leaves are unaffected by chloroform washing, revealing that superficial waxes play little part in their wettability.  相似文献

Summary Wild type wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and three mutant lines that have reduced glaucousness on the flag leaf sheath have been examined for variations in glaucousness, contact angles, wax chemistry and wax morphology. On the sheath and culm, organs that are glaucous in the wild type, increasing glaucousness is correlated with increasing contact angles, an increasing proportion of -diketones plus hydroxy--diketones in the was and an increasing proportion of wax tubes. Organs that were non-glaucous in all four lines, namely both surfaces of the vegetative leaves and the adaxial surface of the flag leaf, had high contact angles, a dense covering of wax plates and waxes rich in primary alcohols but devoid of -diketones and hydroxy--diketones. The abaxial surface of the flag leaf was the most complex of the organ surfaces studied. In the wild type the glaucousness of the sheath continued onto this surface for 1–2 cm and this was correlated with the other characters studied as it was on the sheath. In the mutants, however, the tubes were absent. Flat ribbons of varying widths, a new wax structure in wheat, as well as various types of plates were found instead. These structures continued to the flag leaf tip and were also present on the abaxial surface of the wild type flag leaf. Changes in contact angle at the tip could not be correlated with the other measured parameters.  相似文献

Leaf litter plays a critical role in regulating ecological functions in headwater forest streams, whereas the effects of leaves on water quality in urbanized streams are not fully understood. This study examined the potential importance of leaf litter for the release and transformations of organic carbon and nutrients in urban streams, and compared the effects with other types of natural organic substrates (periphyton and stream sediment). Nutrients and organic carbon were leached from senescent leaves of 6 tree species in the laboratory with deionized water, and maximal releases, leaching rate constants, composition and bioavailability of the leached dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were determined. Stream substrates (leaf debris, rocks with periphyton, and sediment) were seasonally collected from urban and forest reference streams of the NSF Baltimore Long-term Ecological Research Site and incubated with overlying stream water to estimate areal fluxes of DOC and nitrogen. Leaf litter leaching showed large ranges in maximal releases of DOC (7.0–131 mg g?1), dissolved organic nitrogen (DON; 0.07–1.39 mg g?1) and total dissolved phosphorus (TDP; 0.14–0.70 mg g?1) among tree species. DOC leaching rate constants, carbon to nitrogen ratios, and DOC bioavailability were all correlated with organic matter quality indicated by fluorescence spectroscopy. Results from substrate incubation experiments showed far higher DOC and DON release and nitrate retention with leaf debris than with sediment, or rocks with periphyton. DOC release from leaf debris was positively correlated with stream nitrate retention at residential and urban sites, with the highest values observed during the fall and lowest during the summer. This study suggests the potential importance of leaf litter quantity and quality on fostering DOC and nutrient release and transformations in urban streams. It also suggests that species-specific impacts of leaves should be considered in riparian buffer and stream restoration strategies.  相似文献

With growing urbanization, it is becoming increasingly important to design cities in a manner that sustains and enhances biodiversity and ecosystem services. Native bees are critical pollinators that have experienced substantive declines over the past several decades. These declines have captured the attention of the public, particularly urbanites, prompting a large interest in protecting pollinators and their habitats in cities across North America and Europe. Unfortunately, we currently lack research about specific features of urban environments that can enhance the fitness of pollinators. We carried out an intensive study of Bombus impatiens, the Common Eastern Bumblebee, in the city of Toronto (Canada''s largest city), to better understand landscape parameters that provide high‐quality habitat for this species and likely other generalist bees. We divided the city into 270 grid cells and sampled a large number of worker bees, which were then genotyped at twelve hypervariable microsatellite loci. The genetic data allowed us to quantify the effective number of colonies and foraging distance for bumblebees in our study area. We then asked how the city''s landscape and human population demography and income are associated with the availability of high‐quality habitat for B. impatiens. Several aspects of Toronto''s landscape influenced colony density and foraging range. Urbanization had a clear effect on both colony density and foraging distance of workers. On the other hand, functional (i.e., not cosmetic) green space was often associated with higher quality habitats for bumblebees. Our study suggests several planning strategies to enhance habitat quality for bumblebees and other pollinators in cities.  相似文献

Abstract. Because CO2 diffuses 10000 times more slowly through water than air, there may be strong selective pressure for increased water repellency in terrestrial plant leaves. In the present study, leaf trichomes appeared to have a strong influence on leaf water repellency (i.e. degree of water droplet formation on the leaf surface) as well as the retention of droplets on the leaf. Based upon evaluation of 38 plant species from 21 families, we found that leaves with trichomes were more water repellent, especially where trichome density was greater than 25mm2. However, droplet repellency and retention were both high in some species where trichomes entrapped droplets. Finally, the lensing effects of water droplets on leaf surfaces increased incident sunlight by over 20-fold directly beneath individual droplets. These results may have important implications for such processes as stomatal function, whole leaf photosynthesis, and transpiration for a large variety of plant species.  相似文献

The use of movement data as an assay of habitat quality   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Based on our observations and those of others from the literature, we construct a graphical model of habitat use in territorial species at high densities relative to optimal habitat availability. This model ignores differences in abundance among habitats, and, together with other models of habitat use, predicts that there should be greater stability (lower turnover rates) among individuals occupying optimal habitat than among those in suboptimal habitat(s). Future studies assessing quality among habitats might take advantage of this by comparing individual turnover rates among habitat types using standard mark-recapture methodology. As an illustrative example, we present a case in wintering wood thrushes (Catharus mustelinus; Muscicapidae: Turdinae) in which relative abundance and habitat quality were inversely related. Many individuals of this nearctic-neotropic migrant species hold nonbreeding territories in the seemingly crowded rainforest of southern Veracruz, Mexico.  相似文献

Questions: How can floristic diversity be evaluated in conser‐vation plans to identify sites of highest interest for biodiversity? What are the mechanisms influencing the distribution of species in human‐dominated environments? What are the best criteria to identify sites where active urban management is most likely to enhance floristic diversity? Location: The Hauts‐de‐Seine district bordering Paris, France. Methods: We described the floristic diversity in one of the most urbanized French districts through the inventory of ca. 1000 sites located in 23 habitats. We built a new index of floristic interest (IFI), integrating information on richness, indigeneity, typicality and rarity of species, to identify sites and habitats of highest interest for conservation. Finally, we explored the relationship between site IFI and land use patterns (LUP). Results: We observed a total of 626 vascular plant species. Habitats with highest IFI were typically situated in seminatural environments or environments with moderate human impact. We also showed that neighbouring (urban) structures had a significant influence on the floristic interest of sites: for example, the presence of collective dwellings around a site had a strong negative impact on IFI. Conclusions: Our approach can be used to optimize management in urban zones; we illustrate such possibilities by defining a ‘Site Potential Value’, which was then compared with the observed IFI, to identify areas (e.g. river banks) where better management could improve the district's biodiversity.  相似文献

Abstract

Although developmental instability (DI), measured as fluctuating asymmetry (FA), is expected to be positively related to environmental stress and negatively to habitat quality, the pattern found here was the reverse. Developmental instability of leaf traits (leaf width and vein distances within a leaf) was estimated (using two indices of FA: FA4 and σi 2) and compared between three populations of Plantago major L. (Plantaginaceae) from northern Serbia. Two of the populations are from chronically polluted areas (Karaburma & Zemun), while Crni Lug is from an unpolluted, natural area. Results obtained using both FA indices were the same; higher asymmetry levels in the unpolluted area than in the polluted sites, were found for both traits. Between the two polluted sites, FA values were significantly higher in Karaburma site for vein distances within a leaf. Concerning differences in FA4 values between samples, in two cases, results are similar to those found for σi 2 values, for vein distances within leaf. These are the first quantitative data on P. major indicating that (i) plants living in the stressful sites are more symmetrical and (ii) leaf FA for plant species with wide ecological distribution such as P. major should be considered as an ‘index of habitat quality.’  相似文献

Abstract. 1. The pedunculate oak, Quercus robur L., suffers high annual levels of spring defoliation in Wytham Woods, Oxon. The two major defoliators, Tortrix viridana L. and Operophtera brumata L., sometimes reach high enough densities to completely defoliate trees.
2. Experiments with larvae of both species enclosed on oak trees in Wytham Woods suggest considerable potential for intra- and interspecific competition between T. viridana and O. brumata.
3. T. viridana and O. brumata consume equivalent amounts of leaf tissue per unit caterpillar density. Despite this, O. brumata is the superior competitor, measured by mortality during the larval feeding period.
4. Evidence is presented that T. viridana larvae depend upon the protected microclimate of leaf rolls to maintain water balance, and that leaf damage may disrupt the construction of, and microclimate within, leaf rolls. O. brumata may therefore be competitively superior because it indirectly interferes with the water balance of T. viridana.
5. The importance of interspecific competition in the dynamics of T. viridana and O. brumata populations is discussed. Stochastic mortality factors acting on first instar larvae of both species probably make intense competition a rare event.  相似文献

Creating a habitat for a variety of forms of life, such as riparian plants and various fish, is a necessity for stressed river ecosystems. In this study, the hydraulic characteristics of a fish habitat in an urban channel were analyzed using River2D, which is a two-dimensional (2D) depth-averaged finite element hydrodynamic model, to improve the habitat of two target fish in the Daejeon Stream, Korea. These species are Pseudopungtungia nigra, which is an endangered species in the Daejeon Stream, and Zacco platypus, which is a dominant species. In addition, changes in the weighted usable area (WUA) were compared and reviewed as boulders were placed in the stream. The best method for improving the P. nigra's habitat is proposed. A simulation analysis was performed on urban rivers for fish habitats. As a result, a straight and monotonous urban river flow was found to be an appropriate habitat environment for Z. platypus. The WUA for Z. platypus was about 20 times greater than that for P. nigra. Three different fish habitat enhancement methods were evaluated by calculating the WUA for the target fish in the study channel. By calculating the WUA to create fish habitats, the V-type riffle method was found to increase the usable area of the habitat environment for P. nigra by 360%, and the step stone method and single boulder method did so by 60% and 8%, respectively. For the single boulder method, boulders were placed in the channel bed at 3.5-m intervals, which significantly increased habitat availability. Moreover, centralizing the flow pattern in the channel among several types of boulder placements greatly expanded the habitat for P. nigra. Thus, an appropriate placement interval and boulder location that considers the characteristics of the riverbed and target fish species should be researched and implemented.  相似文献

由人类活动引起的城市景观格局变化是影响陆地生态系统的重要因素之一,城市景观格局分布对区域生物多样性服务功能的影响极大.为研究城市景观格局和生境质量演化及其变化原因,以武汉市作为典型区,基于武汉市2005、2010和2015年3期景观类型信息,使用马尔柯夫模型分析其景观格局时空变化特征;采用CA-Markov模型模拟预测武汉市2020年自然增长情景下的景观格局发展方向;使用Logistic回归模型分析景观变化的驱动力;结合InVEST模型评价3期景观格局分布下的生境质量分布和变化,以及2020年模拟情景下的生境质量分布特征,探究景观格局变化与人类活动之间的关系.结果表明: 2005—2015年间,研究区景观类型变化以耕地和人工表面为主.耕地面积呈现逐年减少的趋势,主要转变为人工表面.人工表面面积不断增多,主要由水田和旱地转变而来.研究区整体景观生境质量级别下降,大量高生境质量级别的景观向低生境质量级别转化.整体景观生境质量指数减少,生物多样性服务功能降低,生境质量发生退化.2015—2020年间,武汉市景观格局和生境质量继续保持2005—2015年的变化趋势,表现为人工表面增加、景观生境质量指数减少、生物多样性服务功能降低、生境质量退化.研究区景观格局变化的主要驱动因子是国内生产总值变化和地区财政收入变化.人类社会经济活动是影响研究区景观格局变化和生境质量下降的重要驱动力,城镇化扩张和填湖造地是武汉市生态景观变化的主要原因.  相似文献

Faunal responses to anthropogenic habitat modification represent an important aspect of global change. In Puerto Rico, two species of arboreal lizard, Anolis cristatellus and A. stratulus, are commonly encountered in urban areas, yet seem to use the urban habitat in different ways. In this study, we quantified differences in habitat use between these two species in an urban setting. For each species, we measured habitat use and preference, and the niche space of each taxon, with respect to manmade features of the urban environment. To measure niche space of these species in an urban environment, we collected data from a total of six urban sites across four different municipalities on the island of Puerto Rico. We quantified relative abundance of both species, their habitat use, and the available habitat in the environment to measure both microhabitat preference in an urban setting, as well as niche partitioning between the two different lizards. Overall, we found that the two species utilize different portions of the urban habitat. Anolis stratulus tends to use more “natural” portions of the urban environment (i.e., trees and other cultivated vegetation), whereas A. cristatellus more frequently uses anthropogenic structures. We also found that aspects of habitat discrimination in urban areas mirror a pattern measured in prior studies for forested sites in which A. stratulus was found to perch higher than A. cristatellus and preferred lower temperatures and greater canopy cover. In our study, we found that the multivariate niche space occupied by A. stratulus did not differ from the available niche space in natural portions of the urban environment and in turn represented a subset of the niche space occupied by A. cristatellus. The unique niche space occupied by A. cristatellus corresponds to manmade aspects of the urban environment generally not utilized by A. stratulus. Our results demonstrate that some species are merely tolerant of urbanization while others utilize urban habitats in novel ways. This finding has implications for long‐term persistence in urban habitats and suggests that loss of natural habitat elements may lead to nonrandom species extirpations as urbanization intensifies.  相似文献

During the non-breeding season, many species of territorial migratory birds exhibit a non-random pattern of habitat distribution, with males and females occupying different habitats. In this study, we examined possible physiological consequences arising from such habitat segregation in one migrant passerine species, the American redstart (Setophaga ruticilla), on its non-breeding grounds in Jamaica, West Indies. For 2 years, we measured concentrations of corticosterone, at the time of capture (baseline) and 30 min after capture (profile of acute corticosterone secretion), in redstarts in two distinct habitats, one occupied predominately by males and one mostly by females. All redstarts in both habitat types exhibited similar concentrations of baseline corticosterone levels in fall (October), whereas in spring (March–April), redstarts in female-biased habitat exhibited significantly higher baseline levels regardless of age or sex. In fall, all individuals in both habitats exhibited significant increases in corticosterone concentration with capture and handling, but in spring only redstarts (both sexes) in male-biased habitat continued to exhibit acute corticosterone secretion. Redstarts in female-biased habitat had elevated baseline corticosterone levels and reduced acute corticosterone secretion. In spring, baseline corticosterone concentration was negatively correlated with body mass, suggesting muscle catabolism associated with high corticosterone concentrations or possibly that birds are leaner as a result of increased foraging effort. These results indicate that redstarts (primarily females) in female-biased habitats suffered a decline in physiological condition, which could in turn influence their departure schedules, migration patterns and even their condition and arrival schedules on the breeding grounds. Thus, segregation of populations into habitats of different quality during the non-breeding period may have ramifications throughout the annual cycle of such migratory species. Furthermore, these results show the usefulness of plasma corticosterone levels as indicators of physiological condition and thus habitat quality for birds during the non-breeding period. Reforestation of bottomland hardwood (BLH) forests has occurred within the Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley (LMAV), USA, to support a wide range of ecosystem services, but especially wildlife habitat enhancement. As ecosystem restoration efforts proceed in BLH ecosystems, managers and policymakers are seeking criteria to evaluate wildlife habitat enhancement goals. Specialist wildlife that evolved within forest ecosystems can be sensitive to the composition, structure, and function of an ecosystem in relation to the system's natural or historical range of variation and thereby serve as indicators of habitat quality. The swamp rabbit (Sylvilagus aquaticus) is a specialist species of BLH forests throughout the LMAV and therefore may be an appropriate indicator species for this ecosystem. To address this, we reviewed peer-reviewed literature to evaluate the utility of swamp rabbits as an indicator species according to three commonly-used criteria: habitat factors defining swamp rabbit relationships to BLH forests, the importance of swamp rabbit habitat to other wildlife, and the efficiency of swamp rabbit monitoring. We conclude that the swamp rabbit is a suitable indicator of wildlife habitat quality in BLH ecosystems in the LMAV because they evolved and remain endemic to the ecosystem, use habitat that integrates desirable characteristics that positively influence wildlife biodiversity, and are easy to monitor routinely.  相似文献
