ABSTRACT. The daily fluctuation in mating responsiveness of Dacus tryoni was recorded through a range of light cycles. Evidence was obtained of strict control of the fluctuation by a circadian clock. The phase setting of the fluctuation in the different light cycles was in conformity with Aschoff's (1965) generalizations about circadian rhythms, and had no relationship to overt sexual behaviour occurring during the cycles. The amplitude of the fluctuation in mating responsiveness varied between cycles, suggesting possible variation in the amplitude of the oscillation of the circadian clock.  相似文献

Bactrocera tryoni (Froggatt) and B. neohumeralis (Hardy) (Diptera: Tephritidae) are sympatric species which hybridise readily in the laboratory yet remain distinct in the field. B. tryoni mates only at dusk and B. neohumeralis mates only during the day, but hybrids can mate at both times. We investigated the inheritance of mating time in successively backcrossed hybrid stocks to establish whether mating with either species is more likely. The progeny of all backcrosses to B. tryoni mated only at dusk. The majority of the progeny of the first and a minority of the progeny of the second backcross to B. neohumeralis also mated at dusk, but the third successive B. neohumeralis backcross produced flies that mated only during the day. This trend towards dominance of the B. tryoni trait was also reflected in a diagnostic morphological character. We discuss the possible genetic background for these phenomena and propose that unidirectional gene flow might explain how the two species remain distinct in the face of natural hybridisation.  相似文献

Bactrocera neohumeralis and Bactrocera tryoni are closely related tephritid fruit fly species. B. neohumeralis mates throughout the day (in bright light) and B. tryoni mates at dusk. The two species can also be distinguished by the colour of their calli (prothoracic sclerites) which are brown and yellow, respectively. The F1 hybrids can mate both in bright light just before dusk and during dusk and have calli that are partly brown and partly yellow. The F2 hybrids have a wider range of callus patterns and mating occurs more widely in the day as well as at dusk. We directly selected hybrid stocks for mating time, creating 'early' (day-mating) and 'late' (dusk-mating) lines. As an apparently inadvertent consequence, the two types of line respectively had predominantly brown and predominantly yellow calli and thus came to closely resemble the original two species in both behaviour and appearance. Lines that were evenly selected (half for day and half for dusk) essentially retained the mating pattern of F2 hybrids. Selection for callus colour alone also affected the distribution of mating times in a predictable way. We propose a genetical model to account for the results and discuss them in the light of the apparent maintenance of species integrity in nature.  相似文献

Abstract.— Two sibling species of tephritid fruit fly, Bactrocera tryoni and B. neohumeralis , occur sympatrically throughout the range of B. neohumeralis in Australia. Isolation between the two species appears to be maintained by a difference in mating time: B. tryoni mates at dusk, whereas B. neohumeralis mates during the middle of the day. A morphological difference in humeral callus color also distinguishes the two species. Despite clear phenotypic evidence that B. tryoni and B. neohumeralis are distinct species, genetic differentiation as measured by four markers–nuclear DNA sequences from the white gene and the ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS2), and mitochondrial DNA sequences from the cytochrome b (cytb) and cytochrome oxidase subunit II (COII) genes–is very small. Minor fixed differences occur in the ITS2 sequence, however, in all other cases the two species exhibit a high level of shared polymorphic variation. The close genetic similarity suggests either that speciation has occurred very rapidly and recently in the absence of any mitochondrial DNA sorting or that the sharing of polymorphisms is due to hybridization or introgression. A third species within the tryoni complex, B. aquilonis , is geographically isolated. Bactrocera aquilonis is also genetically very similar, but in this case there is clear differentiation for the mitochondrial loci. The three species form a group of considerable interest for investigation of speciation mechanisms.  相似文献

Factors limiting the responsiveness of female Dacus tryoni to the male sex pheromone were determined in laboratory bioassays. Maximum response occurred in bioassays carried out at the normal time of dusk under a light intensity of 0·8 ln/ft2. The responsiveness of females decreased at light intensities above or below this value. Responsiveness was also influenced by an internal rhythm, the peak of which was synchronized with the start of dusk. The majority of females did not become responsive until their ovaries had matured and they all became unresponsive again for a period after mating. Four weeks after the first mating some females had regained their responsiveness.  相似文献

Abstract
Captures of females of 4 species of fruit flies on or in both coloured sticky traps and protein baited traps were reduced by synthetic male attractants. Captures of female Dacus tryoni (Froggatt), Dacus neohumeralis Hardy and Dacus cacuminatus (Hering) were reduced by both cuelure and methyl eugenol, and female Ceratitis capitata (Weidemann) by Capilure®. These effects were sufficient to overcome the normally attractive stimuli of colour and odours associated with yeast.  相似文献

Three species of Darwin's Finches hybridize on the Galapagos island of Daphne Major. We examined mating patterns to determine if hybrids exhibit mate preferences. Geospiza fortis x G. scandens F1 hybrids backcrossed to both of the parental species, whereas all backcrosses bred with the parental species to which they were most related, or with hybrids. Paternal song was shown to be the crucial factor determining the mating pattern of G. fortis x G. scandens F1 hybrids and their offspring. Song is culturally inherited, transmitted faithfully from father to son (with few exceptions) as a result of an imprinting-like process. Size also contributes to the choice of mates. G. fortis x G. scandens F1 hybrid females paired with large G. scandens -like G. fortis males. G. fortis x G. fuliginosa F1 hybrids paired negatively assortatively with respect to the size of their G. fortis mates. Non-random mating of hybrids based on song, a non-generic trait, has interesting evolutionary consequences. Song characteristics and nuclear and mitochondrial genes flow from G. fuliginosa into the G. fortis population, whereas the direction of transfer of genetic and song information between G. fortis and G. scandens depends on which song was sung by the father of the hybrids.  相似文献

Using a large set of microsatellites, the genetic relationships between three closely related Australian fruit fly species, Bactrocera tryoni (Froggatt), B. neohumeralis (Hardy) and B. aquilonis(May) were investigated. Bactrocera tryoni and B. neohumeralis are sympatric, while B. aquilonisis allopatric to both. The sympatric species, B. tryoni and B. neohumeralis, were found to be genetically distinct. It is likely that despite differences in mating time between these two species, some gene flow still occurs. In contrast, the sibling species B. tryoni and B. aquilonis were found to be closely related, despite allopatry. The level of genetic divergence was similar to that found within eastern Australian populations of B. tryoni. Consideration of all available genetic data suggests that this similarity is not due to recent (i.e. within the last 30 years) displacement of B. aquilonis by B. tryoni from the B. aquilonis region (north-western Australia). Instead the data suggests that, at least in the areas sampled, asymmetrical hybridization may have occurred over a longer timescale.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Thirty-one stocks of a marine ciliate, Euplotes minuta Yocom, collected from different localities, can be grouped in seven mating types. True pairs are formed only in mixtures of stocks belonging to different mating types. No selfing pairs or intraclonal conjugation have ever been observed. Synclonal inheritance of mating types is the rule, although about 10% of pairs show clonal inheritance. The latter can be explained by assuming syncaryon formation through cytogamy or through caryogamy of pronuclei derived from different products of meiosis. Mating type determination is due to 7 alleles at the single locus mt . There is complete dominance among the 7 alleles which can be orderly seriated, as shown in Table 3, according to their dominance relationship. The 5 stocks, and only these 5, of mating type VII have the autogamy trait. The mortality rate in F1 and F2 is very low–a maximum of 10%; however, the F2'S obtained by autogamy from F1 progenies in which mating type VII is involved have a very high mortality rate. The two facts (high mortality rate in F2 and strict association of autogamy trait with mating type VII in natural populations) have been considered as evidences of a probable isolation mechanism existing between mating type VII and the other 6 mating types. Thus, the 7 mating types have been assigned to the same syngen only tentatively.  相似文献

We report the first widespread survey of tephritid fruit flies attempted in a single time period. 1,471 cue lure traps caught 17 species, and extensions to previously recorded geographical ranges were detected for seven of them: Bactrocera tryoni, B. neohumeralis, B. frauenfeldi, B. aeroginosa, Dacus absonifascies, D. aequalis and D. newmani. the traps also unexpectedly caught several B. cacuminata and also both males and females of Dirioxa pornia and Ceratitis capitata. the geographical variation in the relative abundance of B. tryoni and B. neohumeralis in the region of their co-occurrence was in substantial agreement with earlier estimates. the regional variation in abundance of B. tryoni in the eastern states was in accordance with the predictions of a published bioclimatic model. Furthermore, the spread of this species (expected from the model) to several locations in the Northern Territory is recorded here for the first time.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. A new family of Strepsiptera (Dipterophagidae) from Australia containing a new genus and species ( Dipterophagus daci ) is described and figured. This is the first species of Strepsiptera to be described as a parasite of Diptera. D.daci is recorded from ten fruit fly species, viz Dacus aquilonis (May), D.bellulus Drew, D.cacuminatus (Hering), D.decurtans (May), D.mayi Hardy, D.neohumeralis Hardy, D.peninsularis Drew, D.tenuifascia (May), D.tryoni (Froggatt) and Dacus sp. n. Abstract.— We analyzed the rate at which postzygotic incompatibilities accumulate in birds. Our purposes were to assess the role of intrinsic F1 hybrid infertility and inviability in the speciation process, and to compare rates of loss of fertility and viability between the sexes. Among our sample more than half the crosses between species in the same genus produce fertile hybrids. Complete loss of F1 hybrid fertility takes on the order of millions of years. Loss of F1 hybrid viability occurs over longer timescales than fertility: some viable hybrids have been produced between taxa that appear to have been separated for more than 55 my. There is strong support for Haldane's rule, with very few examples where the male has lower fitness than the female. However, in contrast to Drosophila , fertility of the homogametic sex in the F1 appears to be lost before viability of the heterogametic sex in the F1. We conclude that the time span of loss of intrinsic hybrid fertility and viability is often, but not always, longer than the time to speciation. Premating isolation is an important mechanism maintaining reproductive isolation in birds. In addition, other factors causing postzygotic reproductive isolation such as ecological causes of hybrid unfitness, reduced mating success of hybrids, and genetic incompatibilities in the F2s and backcrosses may often be involved in the speciation process.  相似文献

Abstract.  The Indian meal moth, Plodia interpunctella Hübner (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) may enter diapause in the last larval instar in response to the photoperiod during the preceding instars. An hourglass-type photoperiodic clock may measure night length for this purpose. The present study describes the resetting of the hourglass by light pulse(s) in the early scotophase and by scanning the subsequent clock phase by another light pulse (P). When the lights-off time of a first light pulse is fixed at 4 h after dusk under LD 4 : 20 h and LD 6 : 18 h photoperiods and its duration is increased from 1 to 3 h, the critical night length (CNL) from dawn is decreased, but that from dusk to P increases. A 3-h first light pulse efficiently resets the time measuring system. If this 3-h light pulse is split into two 1-h light pulses (L1 and L2) by 1 h of darkness, the dark-time measuring function appears to be impeded and CNL from P to dawn disappears, but that from L2 to P is expressed. This indicates that the receptivity to light pulses varies among individual insects.  相似文献

Based on the observation of a grey phenotype in the F1 generation from a cross between two white plumage duck varieties, the white Kaiya and the white Liancheng , we hypothesized a possible interaction between two autosomal loci that determine grey plumage. Using the parental and F1 individuals, seven testing combinations including five different F1 intercrosses (F2) and two different backcrosses (BC1 and BC2) were designed to test our hypothesis. It was demonstrated by chi-squared analysis that six test matings produced offspring in the expected ratios between the grey and white, with P- values ranging from 0.50 to 0.99. Another mating, where all white offspring were expected, produced 33 white individuals. These results verified that the interaction between two loci produced the grey phenotype. The C locus, which carries the recessive allele ( c ), was previously thought to be the only gene responsible for white plumage in the duck. This is the first report that an allele ( t ), carried by the white Liancheng at a different autosomal locus, also determines white plumage in ducks. Furthermore, the dominant alleles at both loci can interact with each other to produce the grey phenotype, and a new dark phenotype, observed in some F2 individuals, can be attributed to the dosage effect of the T allele.  相似文献

Adult roach, bream and their presumed F1 hybrid from an Anglian Water reservoir were identified on the basis of morphological and meristic characteristics. The hybrid was clearly intermediate. Four hybrid breeding crosses were induced to spawn by hypophysis. A bream × roach cross (female named first) failed to produce fertile eggs, whereas F1 hybrid × roach, roach × F1 hybrid and F1 hybrid × F1 hybrid all produced fry. Fertility (defined as survival of eggs to hatching) was high for the F1 hybrid × roach back-cross (56%) but low for the others (<2%), in comparison to the pure species controls (roach 69%, bream 76%). Progeny from these crosses were reared until anal fin rays could be counted. These counts indicated intermediacy between the parents and back-crossed individuals, and similarity between F1 hybrids and their F2 progeny.  相似文献

Following a 2-week treatment with glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] changes in peroxidase (EC 1.11.1.7) and polyphenol oxidase (PPO; EC 1.14.18.1) activities of yellow nutsedge ( Cyperus esculentus L.) plants, were determined. Glyphosate caused significant increases of both activities. Isoelectric focusing gave 3 species (F1, F2 and F3) of peroxidase activity, at pl 3.8, 4.4 and 4.8, and 4 species (Fa, Fb, Fc and Fd) of PPO activity at pl 7.0, 7.5, 7.8 and 9.5. The activity of the 4 active forms of PPO increased with increasing glyphosate dose up to 10−2 M . The effect of the herbicide on the 3 fractions with peroxidase activity was to change their relative activities. Highest F1 activity was found in control plants whereas the F2 fraction was the predominant form in the plants treated with glyphosate at 10−2 M and the highest F3 activity occurred in plants treated with 5 × 10−3 M glyphosate. The increased PPO activity could produce phytotoxic o -quinones, and variations in peroxidase isoenzymes activity could enhance isoperoxidases with lignin biosynthetic activity.  相似文献

There is a long-standing discussion in the literature, based on biochemical and genomic data, whether some archaeal species may have two structurally and functionally distinct ATP synthases in one cell: the archaeal A1AO together with the bacterial F1FO ATP synthase. To address a potential role of the bacterial F1FO ATP synthase, we have exchanged the F1FO ATPase gene cluster in Methanosarcina acetivorans against a puromycin resistance cassette. Interestingly, the mutant was able to grow with no difference in growth kinetics to the wild type, and cellular ATP contents were identical in the wild type and the mutant. These data demonstrate that the F1FO ATP synthase is dispensable for the growth of M. acetivorans .  相似文献

Abstract. The chloroplasts of two species of the Crassulaceae and their F1 hybrid were compared by electron microscopy. The two species had contrasting leaf tissue δ13C values of −25°/ ( Sedum greggii ) and −13°/ ( Cremnophila linguifolia ), and the F1 hybrid had a value of − 18°/. S. greggii had a mean of 8.9 thylakoids per granum in contrast to C. linguifolia which had a mean of only 3.8 thylakoids per granum. The F1 hybrid had a mean of 6.4 thylakoids per granum. Abstract: Microvessels, predominantly capillaries, were isolated from rat cerebrum by a modification of published procedures. The morphology and purity of the preparations were monitored by light and electron microscopy and by enrichment in alkaline phosphatase, γ-glutamyl transpeptidase, and prostacyclin synthetase. A reversed-phase high-pressure liquid chromatographic method was used in the purification of prostaglandins after extraction from aqueous incubation solutions. Prostacyclin synthesis in brain is localized in cerebral blood vessels and capillaries. The endogenous biosynthetic capacity of the isolated cerebral capillary fractions for prostacyclin, measured as its chemically stable breakdown product, 6-keto-prostaglandin F, was 11 ng/mg protein/10 min. Choroid plexus and intact surface vessels synthesized 6-keto-prostaglandin F at 37 and 35 ng/mg protein/10 min, respectively. The prostacyclin-synthesizing enzyme of the cerebral capillaries also converted the exogenously added prostaglandin endoperoxides to 6-keto-prostaglandin F. Comparison of the synthesis of prostaglandins 6-keto-F, E2, and F showed that 6-keto-prostaglandin F was the major prostaglandin formed in the microvessels, in the larger surface vessels, and in the choroid plexus. Prostaglandin D2 was not detected. Prostacyclin synthesis by the cerebral vasculature is similar to that in other blood vessels and cultured human endothelial cells. Possible physiological roles of prostacyclin in the cerebral microvasculature are discussed with special regard to the autoregulation of cerebral blood flow.  相似文献
