To comprehend the principles underlying sensory information processing, it is important to understand how the nervous system deals with various sources of perturbation. Here, we analyze how the representation of motion information in the fly''s nervous system changes with temperature and luminance. Although these two environmental variables have a considerable impact on the fly''s nervous system, they do not impede the fly to behave suitably over a wide range of conditions. We recorded responses from a motion-sensitive neuron, the H1-cell, to a time-varying stimulus at many different combinations of temperature and luminance. We found that the mean firing rate, but not firing precision, changes with temperature, while both were affected by mean luminance. Because we also found that information rate and coding efficiency are mainly set by the mean firing rate, our results suggest that, in the face of environmental perturbations, the coding efficiency is improved by an increase in the mean firing rate, rather than by an increased firing precision.  相似文献

Motoneurons demonstrate a type of self-sustained firing behavior that seems to be produced by a prolonged period of depolarization caused by intrinsic long-term changes in the motoneuron. Such self-sustained firing behavior has previously been reported in human motor units. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the occurrence of self-sustained firing behavior in older adults. Eight young (mean age 24 yrs) and eight older (mean age 73 yrs) individuals participated in the investigation. While subjects produced light dorsiflexion contractions, a brief vibration stimulus was applied to the tibialis anterior muscle. Motor unit recordings were also obtained from the tibialis anterior muscle. Self-sustained firing behavior was evidenced by the appearance of new motor unit recruitment following vibration, even as the motor units that fired before the vibratory stimulus maintained a steady firing rate. The proportion of motor units exhibiting self-sustained firing activity was similar in both young and older adults (approx. 23% of trials). We conclude that self-sustained firing behavior is a ubiquitous phenomenon that does not seem to be affected by the aging process.  相似文献

Neurons in the primary visual cortex typically reach their highest firing rate after an abrupt image transition. Since the mutual information between the firing rate and the currently presented image is largest during this early firing period it is tempting to conclude this early firing encodes the current image. This view is, however, made more complicated by the fact that the response to the current image is dependent on the preceding image. Therefore we hypothesize that neurons encode a combination of current and previous images, and that the strength of the current image relative to the previous image changes over time. The temporal encoding is interesting, first, because neurons are, at different time points, sensitive to different features such as luminance, edges and textures; second, because the temporal evolution provides temporal constraints for deciphering the instantaneous population activity. To study the temporal evolution of the encoding we presented a sequence of 250 ms stimulus patterns during multiunit recordings in areas 17 and 18 of the anaesthetized ferret. Using a novel method we decoded the pattern given the instantaneous population-firing rate. Following a stimulus transition from stimulus A to B the decoded stimulus during the first 90ms was more correlated with the difference between A and B (B-A) than with B alone. After 90ms the decoded stimulus was more correlated with stimulus B than with B-A. Finally we related our results to information measures of previous (B) and current stimulus (A). Despite that the initial transient conveys the majority of the stimulus-related information; we show that it actually encodes a difference image which can be independent of the stimulus. Only later on, spikes gradually encode the stimulus more exclusively.  相似文献

A central goal in auditory neuroscience is to understand the neural coding of species-specific communication and human speech sounds. Low-rate repetitive sounds are elemental features of communication sounds, and core auditory cortical regions have been implicated in processing these information-bearing elements. Repetitive sounds could be encoded by at least three neural response properties: 1) the event-locked spike-timing precision, 2) the mean firing rate, and 3) the interspike interval (ISI). To determine how well these response aspects capture information about the repetition rate stimulus, we measured local group responses of cortical neurons in cat anterior auditory field (AAF) to click trains and calculated their mutual information based on these different codes. ISIs of the multiunit responses carried substantially higher information about low repetition rates than either spike-timing precision or firing rate. Combining firing rate and ISI codes was synergistic and captured modestly more repetition information. Spatial distribution analyses showed distinct local clustering properties for each encoding scheme for repetition information indicative of a place code. Diversity in local processing emphasis and distribution of different repetition rate codes across AAF may give rise to concurrent feed-forward processing streams that contribute differently to higher-order sound analysis.  相似文献

Drifting gratings can modulate the activity of visual neurons at the temporal frequency of the stimulus. In order to characterize the temporal frequency modulation in the cat’s ascending tectofugal visual system, we recorded the activity of single neurons in the superior colliculus, the suprageniculate nucleus, and the anterior ectosylvian cortex during visual stimulation with drifting sine-wave gratings. In response to such stimuli, neurons in each structure showed an increase in firing rate and/or oscillatory modulated firing at the temporal frequency of the stimulus (phase sensitivity). To obtain a more complete characterization of the neural responses in spatiotemporal frequency domain, we analyzed the mean firing rate and the strength of the oscillatory modulations measured by the standardized Fourier component of the response at the temporal frequency of the stimulus. We show that the spatiotemporal stimulus parameters that elicit maximal oscillations often differ from those that elicit a maximal discharge rate. Furthermore, the temporal modulation and discharge-rate spectral receptive fields often do not overlap, suggesting that the detection range for visual stimuli provided jointly by modulated and unmodulated response components is larger than the range provided by a one response component.  相似文献

Stimulus duration is an important feature of visual stimulation. In the present study, response properties of bullfrog ON-OFF retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) in exposure to different visual stimulus durations were studied. By using a multi-electrode recording system, spike discharges from ON-OFF RGCs were simultaneously recorded, and the cells’ ON and OFF responses were analyzed. It was found that the ON response characteristics, including response latency, spike count, as well as correlated activity and relative latency between pair-wise cells, were modulated by different light OFF intervals, while the OFF response characteristics were modulated by different light ON durations. Stimulus information carried by the ON and OFF responses was then analyzed, and it was found that information about different light ON durations was more carried by transient OFF response, whereas information about different light OFF intervals were more carried by transient ON response. Meanwhile, more than 80 % information about stimulus durations was carried by firing rate. These results suggest that ON-OFF RGCs are sensitive to different stimulus durations, and they can efficiently encode the information about visual stimulus duration by firing rate.  相似文献

Neuronal activity in rat barrel cortex underlying texture discrimination   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Rats and mice palpate objects with their whiskers to generate tactile sensations. This form of active sensing endows the animals with the capacity for fast and accurate texture discrimination. The present work is aimed at understanding the nature of the underlying cortical signals. We recorded neuronal activity from barrel cortex while rats used their whiskers to discriminate between rough and smooth textures. On whisker contact with either texture, firing rate increased by a factor of two to ten. Average firing rate was significantly higher for rough than for smooth textures, and we therefore propose firing rate as the fundamental coding mechanism. The rat, however, cannot take an average across trials, but must make an immediate decision using the signals generated on each trial. To estimate single-trial signals, we calculated the mutual information between stimulus and firing rate in the time window leading to the rat's observed choice. Activity during the last 75 ms before choice transmitted the most informative signal; in this window, neuronal clusters carried, on average, 0.03 bits of information about the stimulus on trials in which the rat's behavioral response was correct. To understand how cortical activity guides behavior, we examined responses in incorrect trials and found that, in contrast to correct trials, neuronal firing rate was higher for smooth than for rough textures. Analysis of high-speed films suggested that the inappropriate signal on incorrect trials was due, at least in part, to nonoptimal whisker contact. In conclusion, these data suggest that barrel cortex firing rate on each trial leads directly to the animal's judgment of texture.  相似文献

Neural populations across cortical layers perform different computational tasks. However, it is not known whether information in different layers is encoded using a common neural code or whether it depends on the specific layer. Here we studied the laminar distribution of information in a large-scale computational model of cat primary visual cortex. We analyzed the amount of information about the input stimulus conveyed by the different representations of the cortical responses. In particular, we compared the information encoded in four possible neural codes: (1) the information carried by the firing rate of individual neurons; (2) the information carried by spike patterns within a time window; (3) the rate-and-phase information carried by the firing rate labelled by the phase of the Local Field Potentials (LFP); (4) the pattern-and-phase information carried by the spike patterns tagged with the LFP phase. We found that there is substantially more information in the rate-and-phase code compared with the firing rate alone for low LFP frequency bands (less than 30 Hz). When comparing how information is encoded across layers, we found that the extra information contained in a rate-and-phase code may reach 90 % in Layer 4, while in other layers it reaches only 60 %, compared to the information carried by the firing rate alone. These results suggest that information processing in primary sensory cortices could rely on different coding strategies across different layers.  相似文献

It is well known that some neurons tend to fire packets of action potentials followed by periods of quiescence (bursts) while others within the same stage of sensory processing fire in a tonic manner. However, the respective computational advantages of bursting and tonic neurons for encoding time varying signals largely remain a mystery. Weakly electric fish use cutaneous electroreceptors to convey information about sensory stimuli and it has been shown that some electroreceptors exhibit bursting dynamics while others do not. In this study, we compare the neural coding capabilities of tonically firing and bursting electroreceptor model neurons using information theoretic measures. We find that both bursting and tonically firing model neurons efficiently transmit information about the stimulus. However, the decoding mechanisms that must be used for each differ greatly: a non-linear decoder would be required to extract all the available information transmitted by the bursting model neuron whereas a linear one might suffice for the tonically firing model neuron. Further investigations using stimulus reconstruction techniques reveal that, unlike the tonically firing model neuron, the bursting model neuron does not encode the detailed time course of the stimulus. A novel measure of feature detection reveals that the bursting neuron signals certain stimulus features. Finally, we show that feature extraction and stimulus estimation are mutually exclusive computations occurring in bursting and tonically firing model neurons, respectively. Our results therefore suggest that stimulus estimation and feature extraction might be parallel computations in certain sensory systems rather than being sequential as has been previously proposed.  相似文献

The linear-nonlinear cascade model (LN model) has proven very useful in representing a neural system’s encoding properties, but has proven less successful in reproducing the firing patterns of individual neurons whose behavior is strongly dependent on prior firing history. While the cell’s behavior can still usefully be considered as feature detection acting on a fluctuating input, some of the coding capacity of the cell is taken up by the increased firing rate due to a constant “driving” direct current (DC) stimulus. Furthermore, both the DC input and the post-spike refractory period generate regular firing, reducing the spike-timing entropy available for encoding time-varying fluctuations. In this paper, we address these issues, focusing on the example of motoneurons in which an afterhyperpolarization (AHP) current plays a dominant role regularizing firing behavior. We explore the accuracy and generalizability of several alternative models for single neurons under changes in DC and variance of the stimulus input. We use a motoneuron simulation to compare coding models in neurons with and without the AHP current. Finally, we quantify the tradeoff between instantaneously encoding information about fluctuations and about the DC.  相似文献

Human functional brain imaging detects blood flow changes that are thought to reflect the activity of neuronal populations and, thus, the responses of neurons that carry behaviourally relevant information. Since this relationship is poorly understood, we explored the link between the activity of single neurons and their neuronal population. The functional imaging results were in good agreement with levels of population activation predicted from the known effects of sensory stimulation, learning and attention on single cortical neurons. However, the nature of the relationship between population activation and single neuron firing was very surprising. Population activation was strongly influenced by those neurons firing at low rates and so was very sensitive to the baseline or 'spontaneous' firing rate. When neural representations were sparse and neurons were tuned to several stimulus dimensions, population activation was hardly influenced by the few neurons whose firing was most strongly modulated by the task or stimulus. Measures of population activation could miss changes in information processing given simultaneous changes in neurons' baseline firing, response modulation or tuning width. Factors that can modulate baseline firing, such as attention, may have a particularly large influence on population activation. The results have implications for the interpretation of functional imaging signals and for cross-calibration between different methods for measuring neuronal activity.  相似文献

Experiments on the cercal wind-sensing system of the American cockroach, Periplaneta americana, showed that the firing rate of the interneurons coding wind information depends on the bandwidth of random noise wind stimuli. The firing rate was shown to increase with decreases in the stimulus bandwidth, and be independent of changes in the total power of the stimulus with constant spectral composition. A detailed analysis of ethologically relevant stimulus parameters is presented. A phenomenological model of these relationships and their relevance to wind-mediated cockroach behavior is proposed.Abbreviations 2D two dimensional - FOWD fiber-optic wind detector - GI giant interneurons - STA spike-triggered average  相似文献

In experiments on immobilized unanesthetized rabbits selective automatic reinforcement of certain ranges of short and long interspike intervals in spontaneous unit activity recorded from single cortical units was given by means of a nociceptive stimulus. Analysis of postinterval histograms showed that the total number of intervals reinforceable by nociceptive stimuli is reduced as a result of the consequent reorganization of the firing pattern. If short intervals are reinforced the mean firing rate is reduced and the probability of appearance of long intervals immediately after the short reinforcements is increased. After reinforcement of long intervals the mean firing rate was increased in one group of cortical neurons, with a corresponding decrease in the total number of long intervals. In the other group of cells a decrease in the number of long intervals was accompanied by a decrease in the mean firing rate of the cells. It is postulated that reorganization of the firing pattern is determined by the level of synchronization of ascending activating influences and by their summation with phases of excitation and inhibition in reciprocally interacting neuron populations.Institute of Experimental Medicine, Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR, Leningrad. The visual cortex responds to repeated presentations of the same stimulus with high variability. Because the firing mechanism is remarkably noiseless, the source of this variability is thought to lie in the membrane potential fluctuations that result from summated synaptic input. Here this hypothesis is tested through measurements of membrane potential during visual stimulation. Surprisingly, trial-to-trial variability of membrane potential is found to be low. The ratio of variance to mean is much lower for membrane potential than for firing rate. The high variability of firing rate is explained by the threshold present in the function that converts inputs into firing rates. Given an input with small, constant noise, this function produces a firing rate with a large variance that grows with the mean. This model is validated on responses recorded both intracellularly and extracellularly. In neurons of visual cortex, thus, a simple deterministic mechanism amplifies the low variability of summated synaptic inputs into the large variability of firing rate. The computational advantages provided by this amplification are not known.  相似文献

Sensory information can be encoded using the average firing rate and spike occurrence times in neuronal network responses to external stimuli. Decoding or retrieving stimulus characteristics from the response pattern generally implies that the corresponding neural network has a selective response to various input signals. The role of various spiking activity characteristics (e.g., spike rate and precise spike timing) for basic information processing was widely investigated on the level of neural populations but gave inconsistent evidence for particular mechanisms. Multisite electrophysiology of cultured neural networks grown on microelectrode arrays is a recently developed tool and currently an active research area. In this study, we analyzed the stimulus responses represented by network-wide bursts evoked from various spatial locations (electrodes). We found that the response characteristics, such as the burst initiation time and the spike rate, can be used to retrieve information about the stimulus location. The best selectivity in the response spiking pattern could be found for a small subpopulation of neurones (electrodes) at relatively short post-stimulus intervals. Such intervals were unique for each culture due to the non-uniform organization of the functional connectivity in the network during spontaneous development.  相似文献

Recordings from area V4 of monkeys have revealed that when the focus of attention is on a visual stimulus within the receptive field of a cortical neuron, two distinct changes can occur: The firing rate of the neuron can change and there can be an increase in the coherence between spikes and the local field potential (LFP) in the gamma-frequency range (30-50 Hz). The hypothesis explored here is that these observed effects of attention could be a consequence of changes in the synchrony of local interneuron networks. We performed computer simulations of a Hodgkin-Huxley type neuron driven by a constant depolarizing current, I, representing visual stimulation and a modulatory inhibitory input representing the effects of attention via local interneuron networks. We observed that the neuron's firing rate and the coherence of its output spike train with the synaptic inputs was modulated by the degree of synchrony of the inhibitory inputs. When inhibitory synchrony increased, the coherence of spiking model neurons with the synaptic input increased, but the firing rate either increased or remained the same. The mean number of synchronous inhibitory inputs was a key determinant of the shape of the firing rate versus current (f-I) curves. For a large number of inhibitory inputs (approximately 50), the f-I curve saturated for large I and an increase in input synchrony resulted in a shift of sensitivity-the model neuron responded to weaker inputs I. For a small number (approximately 10), the f-I curves were non-saturating and an increase in input synchrony led to an increase in the gain of the response-the firing rate in response to the same input was multiplied by an approximately constant factor. The firing rate modulation with inhibitory synchrony was highest when the input network oscillated in the gamma frequency range. Thus, the observed changes in firing rate and coherence of neurons in the visual cortex could be controlled by top-down inputs that regulated the coherence in the activity of a local inhibitory network discharging at gamma frequencies.  相似文献

This paper reviews two new facets of the behaviour of human motoneurones; these were demonstrated by modelling combined with analysis of long periods of low-frequency tonic motor unit firing (sub-primary range). 1) A novel transformation of the interval histogram has shown that the effective part of the membrane's post-spike voltage trajectory is a segment of an exponential (rather than linear), with most spikes being triggered by synaptic noise before the mean potential reaches threshold. The curvature of the motoneurone's trajectory affects virtually all measures of its behaviour and response to stimulation. The 'trajectory' is measured from threshold, and so includes any changes in threshold during the interspike interval. 2) A novel rhythmic stimulus (amplitude-modulated pulsed vibration) has been used to show that the motoneurone produces appreciable phase-advance during sinusoidal excitation. At low frequencies, the advance increases with rising stimulus frequency but then, slightly below the motoneurones mean firing rate, it suddenly becomes smaller. The gain has a maximum for stimuli at the mean firing rate (the 'carrier'). Such behaviour is functionally important since it affects the motoneurone's response to any rhythmic input, whether generated peripherally by the receptors (as in tremor) or by the CNS (as with cortical oscillations). Low mean firing rates favour tremor, since the high gain and reduced phase advance at the 'carrier' reduce the stability of the stretch reflex.  相似文献
