Human physiological reactions to acute hypoxic hypoxia were studied. Analysis of simultaneously recorded parameters of various physiological systems showed the following: activation of the general antihypoxic defense system is based on the formation of an intricate structure of intra- and intersystemic relations of specific and nonspecific elements of adaptation that support vital body functions during environmental oxygen deficit. These specific elements become more important in more severe hypoxia, which suppresses metabolism in some organs and tissues because of redistribution of blood flow. These factors allow the body to function at a lower oxygen tension in its tissues owing to an increased efficiency of mitochondria as a result of changes in the kinetics of enzymes of the mitochondrial respiratory chain. In acute hypoxia, the structure of intra- and intersystemic relations is rather intricate; its functional hierarchy is maintained by stronger individual amplitude-related controlling factors and by modulation of their phase- and time-related links. Advanced stages of hypoxia are associated with disintegration of central regulatory mechanisms, which is manifested by disturbances in amplitude-frequency and spatiotemporal parameters of the brain bioelectrical activity, changes in phasic interactions between elements of regulatory mechanisms, and signs of deregulation and decompensation of vital functions. The interpretation of the results is based on the general theory of adaptation, Medvedev's idea of adaptation as a successive involvement of genetically predetermined and newly-formed regulatory programs of the brain, Anokhin's theory of functional systems, and modern concepts of molecular and biochemical mechanisms of hypoxia. It was concluded that artificial normobaric hypoxia is a unique, biologically adequate model that makes it possible to study the rearrangements in systemic and autonomic regulatory mechanisms in response to strictly determined changes in the environmental concentration of oxygen as a principal factor supporting life. 相似文献

As part of a species recovery program, 129 Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis) originating from British Columbia, the Yukon, Manitoba, and Quebec, Canada, and Alaska, USA, were reintroduced to southwestern Colorado, USA, from 1999 to 2003. Of 52 lynx mortalities documented by October 2003, six lynx, including a female and her 5-mo-old kitten, had evidence of Yersinia pestis infection as determined by fluorescent antibody test and/or culture. Postmortem findings in these lynx were characterized by pneumonia, ranging from acute suppurative pneumonia, to multifocal necrotizing pneumonia, to fibrinous bronchopneumonia. Histopathologic examination of lung revealed multiple areas of inflammation and consolidation, areas of edema and hemorrhage, and bacteria surrounded by extensive inflammation. Spleens had severe lymphoid depletion and hypocellular red pulp. Lymphadenomegaly was observed in only one plague-affected lynx. We hypothesize that these Canada lynx were exposed to Y. pestis by infected prey, and these are the first reports of plague in this species. 相似文献

In the 1980s the Nature Conservancy Council created an ancient woodland inventory showing all woods in Great Britain (GB) greater than 2 ha that were believed to have had woodland habitat cover continuously from 1600. Subsequently these lists have been maintained as three separate inventories by NCC's successors, English Nature (now Natural England), Countryside Council for Wales and Scottish Natural Heritage. This paper outlines the concept of ancient woodland as it has developed in GB, and how this idea gave rise to the ancient woodland inventories. The criteria used in compiling the inventories are discussed, including the inception dates and the threshold size, and the difference between ancient woodland and parkland. The inventories have been digitised for use with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), which has made them more accessible to planners and nature conservation bodies; however, the digitising process is more precise than the original definition of the boundaries of the ancient woodland. The three different countries have approached this issue slightly differently, taking account of the differing landscapes within which their ancient woodland exists. As the inventory developed, new legislation has also been brought into play to protect ancient woodland further. The inventory currently lacks detailed information concerning the condition or type of wood, beyond its semi-natural or plantation status. Ascertaining, and then maintaining, the condition of ancient woodland in Great Britain will be a major challenge for the future. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that fearfulness is a key proximate factor determining the nonrandom order repeatedly reported for baboon troops progressing from one location to another. According to this hypothesis, the most vulnerable troop members, the walking immatures, are expected in most circumstances to be cautious and to keep others between themselves and potential danger. The more confident adults, especially large powerful males, should tend toward the front and rear of progressing troops. The fear hypothesis predicts that in progressions toward a fear source, adult males should be near the front of the troop; on the other hand, when the troop is retreating from a frightening or tense situation, adult males should be found more toward the rear. Progressions of chacma baboons away from the location of a severe fright or in retreat from another troop were compared with other progressions. Adult males tended to be more rearward in these situations. The number of adults of either sex interposed between a fear source and the first walking immature was greater for retreating troops than for others. Some adult males continued to be near the front of the troop when retreating from tense situations. 相似文献

The endangered black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes) is affected by plague, caused by Yersinia pestis, both directly, as a cause of mortality, and indirectly, because of the impacts of plague on its prairie dog (Cynomys spp.) prey base. Recent developments in vaccines and vaccine delivery have raised the possibility of plague control in prairie dog populations, thereby protecting ferret populations. A large-scale experimental investigation across the western US shows that sylvatic plague vaccine delivered in oral baits can increase prairie dog survival. In northern Colorado, an examination of the efficacy of insecticides to control fleas and plague vaccine shows that timing and method of plague control is important, with different implications for long-term and large-scale management of Y. pestis delivery. In both cases, the studies show that ambitious field-work and cross-sectoral collaboration can provide potential solutions to difficult issues of wildlife management, conservation and disease ecology. 相似文献
