In Turkish adults, HDL cholesterol (HDL-C) levels are 10-15 mg/dl lower than those of adults in western Europe and the United States. In this study, we determined whether HDL-C levels in Turks are low from birth to adulthood and assessed the effect of socioeconomic status (SES) on plasma lipids and lipoproteins. Analyses of cord blood from 105 Turkish newborns showed low levels of plasma cholesterol ( approximately 60 mg/dl) and HDL-C (approximately 30 mg/dl), consistent with results from other Western ethnic groups. Prepubescent 8- to 10-year-old Turkish boys and girls of upper (n = 82) and lower (n = 143) SES had high HDL-C levels (50-60 mg/dl) similar to those of western European children. However, the cholesterol (154-158 mg/dl) and HDL-C (55-58 mg/dl) levels of upper SES children were approximately 25 and approximately 12 mg/dl higher, respectively, than those of lower SES children. Height, weight, skinfold thickness, and estimated body fat were greater in the upper SES children and appeared to reflect dietary differences. Upper SES children consumed more total fat (approximately 35% vs. 25% of total calories), including more saturated fat of animal origin, and less carbohydrate (approximately 50% vs. 62% of total calories), consistent with their elevated plasma cholesterol levels. Carbohydrate intake correlated inversely with the HDL-C level. The HDL-C levels in the prepubescent children, especially those of higher SES, who consumed diets more like western Europeans, decreased markedly to adult levels, with males exhibiting a approximately 20 mg/dl decrease (from 58 to 37 mg/dl) and females a approximately 13 mg/dl decrease (from 55 to 42 mg/dl). SES did not affect HDL-C levels in adults. The profound decrease may reflect alterations in androgen/estrogen balance in Turks at puberty and a modulation of hepatic lipase affecting HDL-C levels.  相似文献

There is still a lack of information on the effect of regular dancing exercise on lipid profiles. On the other hand, many studies have been carried out on the effect of aerobic exercise on lipid profiles. This study tried to find out the effects of Modern Balinese Baris Dancing Exercise (MBBDE) on serum lipid profiles. Subjects of the study were 30 healthy young male Balinese as an experimental group, and another 30 healthy young Balinese as control group. The MBBDE involved exercise intensity at 70-80% of targeted heart rate, for 50 min period, 3 times per week for 8 weeks. Pre- and post-control group design was applied. Total cholesterol and triglyceride were measured enzymatically. Following MBBDE 3 x 50 min/week for 8 weeks duration, serum level of high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) concentration increased significantly from 55.3 +/- 2.32 mg/dl to 63.2 +/- 2.82 mg/dl (p < 0.001). It was also associated with the decrease of total cholesterol concentration from 195.5 +/- 21.10 mg/dl to 161.8 +/- 21.29 mg/dl (p < 0.001); triglyceride concentration from 132.2 +/- 9.65 mg/dl to 110.6 +/- 9.08 mg/dl (p < 0.001); and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) concentration from 113.8 +/- 21.68 mg/dl to 76.9 +/- 20.76 mg/dl (p < 0.001). No significant differences were found in the above parameters in the control group. It is concluded that MBBDE is an aerobic, endurance exercise, and therefore produces beneficial effect on the serum lipid profiles.  相似文献

INTRODUCTION: The metabolic syndrome characterized by central obesity, insulin and lipid dysregulation, and hypertension, is a precursor state for atherosclerotic process and, in consequence, cardiovascular disease. Decline of both testicular and adrenal function with aging causes a decrease in androgen concentration in men. It has been postulated that low levels of total testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) are associated with unfavorable levels of several strong cardiovascular disease risk factors, such as lipids and blood pleasure, which are components of the metabolic syndrome, and insulin levels. Both testosterone and DHEA-S deficiency are risk factors of obesity and insulin resistance, but it is not clear, whether this possible influence is independent. The aim of this study was to determined whether lower androgens (testosterone and DHEA-S) levels are associated with the development of metabolic syndrome in non-obese elderly men as well as analysis, whether these sex hormones influents on measured parameters separately. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Together 85 men age from 60 to 70 years (mean 66.3 +/- 1.5 years; mean +/- SEM) were analyzed. Testosterone levels < 4 ng/ml or DHEA levels < 2000 ng/ml and BMI < 30 kg/m(2) were including criteria. Patients were divided into three groups: 52 with testosterone deficiency (L-T), 32 with DHEA deficiency (L-DHEA-S) and 67 with deficiency of both sex hormones (L-T/DHEA-S). The influence of sex hormones deficiency in these groups on blood pressure, lipids, visceral obesity and fasting glucose were measured (according to metabolic syndrome definition NCEP III/IDF). RESULTS: Testosterone levels in L-T, L-DHEA and L-T/DHEA-S groups were respectively 3.19 +/- 0.23 ng/ml, 4.89 +/- 0.45 ng/ml and 3.25 +/- 0.34 g/ml (p < 0.002). While DHEA-S levels were respectively 2498 +/- 98 ng/ml, 1435 +/- 1010 ng/ml and 1501 +/- +/- 89 ng/ml). BMI values do not differ between groups. Waist circumference was significantly higher in L-T/DHEA-S group than in L-T i L-DHEA-S groups (respectively: 99.9 +/- 6,1 cm, 97.1 +/- 7.1 cm i 96.2 +/- 6.4 cm; mean +/- SD, p < 0.05 vs. L-T and L-DHEA-S groups). Mean triglycerides concentration in L-T/DHEA-S group was significantly higher than in L-T and L-DHEA-S groups (respectively: 188.2 +/- 13.3 mg/dl, 161.7 +/- 14.7 mg/dl and 152.2 +/- 12.8 mg/dl (mean +/- SD; p < 0.02 vs. L-T and L-DHEA-S groups). Analysis of prevalence of risk factors showed, that in L-T/DHEA-S group they were more frequent than in other groups. The most significant percentage difference was observed for triglycerides: concentration > or = 150 mg/dl was measured in 31% men in L-T group, 28% men in L-DHEA-S group and 42% men in L-T/DHEA-S group. According metabolic syndrome definition NCEP III/IDF prevalence of this syndrome was: 71% patients in L-T/DHEA-S group, 67% patients in L-T group and 64% patients in L-DHEA-S group. CONCLUSIONS: The DHEA-S and testosterone deficiency was a significant and independent risk factor of the metabolic syndrome in non-obese elderly men. It seems, that triglycerides concentration and waist circumference are more sensitive then others parameters to reflect the influence of sex hormones deficiency on risk of the metabolic syndrome in elderly men.  相似文献

The effectiveness of lifestyle intervention strategies to improve blood lipids in women may be dependent on preexisting cholesterol concentrations. We characterized the effects of cholesterol status on blood lipid, lipoprotein lipid, and lipid regulatory enzyme responses to a single session of aerobic exercise in physically active, postmenopausal women. In this study, blood samples were obtained from 12 women with high cholesterol (HC; > or =200 mg/dl) and 13 women with normal cholesterol (NC; <200 mg/dl), 24 h before (Pre), immediately after (IPE), and 24 and 48 h after an exercise session (treadmill walking at 70% peak oxygen consumption, 400 kcal). We found that repeated-measures analysis revealed the following: 1) preexercise cholesterol differences did not influence the lipid or lipoprotein lipid responses to exercise; 2) for both groups, triglyceride was significantly reduced (-8.5%) after exercise; 3) the concentration profile over time for high-density lipoprotein cholesterol was significant for both groups, first falling at IPE then rising back to Pre levels by 24 h after exercise; 4) the lecithin-cholesterol acyltransferase activity (LCATA) exercise response was group dependent, increasing modestly in the NC group at 24 and 48 h; 5) lipoprotein lipase activity (LPLA) increased at IPE (by 17%) in the HC group only and then fell at 24 and 48 h (by 21%) compared with Pre; and 6) cholesterol ester transfer protein activity was unchanged by exercise. From these findings, we conclude that in postmenopausal women, a single session of endurance exercise elicited a short-term, favorable decrease in triglycerides independent of initial blood cholesterol concentrations. However, LCATA and LPLA postexercise changes were influenced by preexercise cholesterol status.  相似文献

Periodontitis is characterized by systemic inflammatory host responses that may contribute to a higher risk for cardiovascular disease. We hypothesized that periodontitis may be associated with altered C-reactive protein levels, serum levels of lipids and peripheral blood counts, and that these characteristics may serve as markers for a link between periodontitis and cardiovascular disease. Sixty subjects, 25–60 years old, were divided into three groups of 20 subjects each. Group 1, age and sex matched healthy controls; group 2, patients diagnosed with chronic periodontitis; group 3, patients diagnosed with acute periodontal lesions including periodontal abscess and pericoronal abscesses. Serum C-reactive protein levels, lipid levels and peripheral blood counts were obtained for all three groups. Significant increases in C-reactive protein and serum lipid levels, and altered peripheral blood counts were observed between the experimental groups; these factors were correlated with chronic periodontitis and cardiovascular disease. These simple, economical clinical measurements can be used to assess periodontal tissue damage and may be useful for predicting risk of cardiovascular disease in these subjects.  相似文献

Apolipoprotein A-IV concentration was measured by a newly developed competitive enzyme immunoassay in sera from fasted human subjects (n = 105) whose triglyceride concentrations ranged from 20 to 474 mg/dl (total cholesterol below 260 mg/dl) and in which chylomicrons could not be detected. Mean (+/- SD) apolipoprotein A-IV concentration was 13.0 +/- 2.6 mg/dl in sera with triglyceride levels ranging from 20 to 100 mg/dl, 16.9 +/- 3.7 mg/dl in sera with triglyceride levels ranging from 101 to 250 mg/dl, and 22.7 +/- 6.7 mg/dl in sera with triglyceride levels ranging from 251 to 474 mg/dl. The differences among the three groups were highly significant (P less than 0.001). Moreover, variations of apolipoprotein A-IV concentrations according to the triglyceride levels were noted within the normo-triglyceridemic population. Apolipoprotein A-IV concentration was 12.8 +/- 2.1 mg/dl for triglyceride levels ranging from 20 to 75 mg/dl and 16.4 +/- 3.8 mg/dl for triglyceride levels ranging from 76 to 150 mg/dl (P less than 0.01). In the entire population that was studied there was a significant linear correlation (r = 0.61, P less than 0.001) between the concentrations of serum apolipoprotein A-IV and triglyceride. Although the hypothesis of an unknown factor independently influencing both very low density lipoproteins and apolipoprotein A-IV cannot be ruled out, and although no apolipoprotein A-IV was found in the triglyceride-rich lipoprotein fraction after separation by gel filtration, these data suggest that, in fasting subjects, the secretion of very low density lipoproteins could contribute to the plasma apolipoprotein A-IV level.  相似文献

Objective

To investigate the relationship between lipid profiles [including total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C)] and a mild decline in the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in subjects with normal serum lipid levels.

Design and Methods

In this study, we included 2647 participants who were ≥40 years old and had normal serum lipid levels. The Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) equation was used to estimate the GFR. A mildly reduced eGFR was defined as 60–90 mL/min/1.73 m2. First, multiple linear regression analysis was used to estimate the association of lipid profiles with the eGFR. Then, the levels of each lipid component were divided into four groups, using the 25th, 50th and 75th percentiles as cut-off points. Finally, multiple logistic regression analysis was used to investigate the association of different lipid components with the risk of mildly reduced eGFR.

Results

In the group with a mildly reduced eGFR, TG and LDL-C levels were significantly increased, but HDL-C levels were significantly decreased. After adjusting for age, gender, body mass index (BMI), systolic blood pressure (SBP), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), smoking and drinking, only TC and TG were independently related to the eGFR. Additionally, only TG showed a linear relationship with an increased risk of a mildly reduced eGFR, with the highest quartile group (TG: 108–150 mg/dl [1.22–1.70 mmol/L]) having a significantly increased risk after adjusting for the above factors.

Conclusions

Triglyceride levels are closely associated with a mildly reduced eGFR in subjects with normal serum lipid levels. Dyslipidemia with lower TG levels could be used as new diagnostic criteria for subjects with mildly reduced renal function.  相似文献

INTRODUCTION: Nutrition therapy is an integral part of the management of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Most women with GDM are treated by nutritional management alone. The goal of our study was to compare low and high carbohydrate diets in their effectiveness, safety and tolerability in women with GDM. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study group consisted of 30 Caucasian women newly diagnosed with GDM, with a mean age of 28.7 +/- 3.7 years and pregnancy duration of 29.2 +/- 5.4 weeks. The patients were randomised into two groups: those on a low and those on a high carbohydrate diet (45% vs. 65% respectively of energy supply coming from carbohydrates). The presence of urine ketones was controlled every day. After two weeks daily glucose profiles and compliance with the recommended diets were analysed. RESULTS: Glucose concentration before implementation of the diet regimen did not differ between groups. No changes in fasting blood glucose were noticed in the group that had followed a low carbohydrate diet, although a significant decrease in glucose concentration was observed after breakfast (102 +/- 16 vs. 94 +/- 11 mg/dl), lunch (105 +/- 12 vs. 99 +/- 9 mg/dl) and dinner (112 +/- 16 vs. 103 +/- 13 mg/dl) (p < 0.05). In the high carbohydrate diet group fasting and after-breakfast glucose concentration did not change. A significant decrease in glycaemia was noticed after lunch (106 +/- 15 vs. 96 +/- 7 mg/dl) and dinner (107 +/- 12 vs. 97 +/- 7 mg/dl) (p < 0.05). Ketonuria was not observed in either group. Obstetrical outcomes did not differ between groups. CONCLUSIONS: Both high and low carbohydrate diets are effective and safe. A diet with carbohydrate limitation should be recommended to women who experience the highest glycaemia levels after breakfast.  相似文献

A population of 6 XYY and 6 XY individuals participated in a study to compare the levels of free circulating testosterone. No significant differences were found in the amounts of free circulating testosterone or total plasma testosterone. The plasma testosterone levels of the twelve subjects were within the normal range of values (596ng/dl ± 232ng/dl) obtained in our laboratory. Estrogen levels were assayed to determine estrogen influence on testosterone levels. Estrogens were not significantly different in the two groups. Metabolic syndrome is a relatively common disorder with significant morbidity worldwide. Cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) plays a central role in the metabolism of lipoproteins. In this study the effect of -629C/A polymorphism on the concentration of CETP and plasma lipids pattern was elicited in metabolic syndrome patients and control subjects. For this, a sample of 200 patients diagnosed with metabolic syndrome disorder was studied in comparison with 200 healthy controls. This study was performed by using polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphisms. Genotype distribution and allelic frequencies were determined and compared in metabolic syndrome and healthy controls. To determine the relationship between -629C/A polymorphism and lipid levels, lipids and CETP concentration were measured in metabolic syndrome and normal subjects. The results showed a significant difference between two groups in terms of FBS, cholesterol, TG, HDL-C, LDL-C levels as well as BMI, waist circumference, systolic and diastolic blood pressure. We investigated, for the first time, the expression of I- and L-FABP in two very rare hereditary lipid malabsorption syndromes as compared with normal subjects. Abetalipoproteinemia (ABL) and Anderson’s disease (AD) are characterized by an inability to export alimentary lipids as chylomicrons that result in fat loading of enterocytes. Duodeno-jejunal biopsies were obtained from 14 fasted normal subjects, and from four patients with ABL and from six with AD. Intestinal FABP expression was investigated by immuno-histochemistry, western blot, ELISA and Northern blot analysis. In contrast to normal subjects, the cellular immunostaining for both FABPs was clearly decreased in patients, as the enterocytes became fat-laden. In patients with ABL, the intestinal contents of I- (60.7 ± 13.38 ng/mg protein) and L-FABP (750.3 ± 121.3 ng/mg protein) are significantly reduced (50 and 35%, P < 0.05, respectively) as compared to normal subjects (I-135.3 ± 11.1 ng, L-1211 ± 110 ng/mg protein). In AD, the patients also exhibited decreased expression (50%, P < 0.05; I-59 ± 11.88 ng, L-618.2 ± 104.6 ng/mg protein). Decreased FABP expression was not associated with decreased mRNA levels. The results suggest that enterocytes might regulate intracellular FABP content in response to intracellular fatty acids, which we speculate may act as lipid sensors to prevent their intracellular transport.  相似文献

Lipoprotein metabolism in brain has not yet been fully elucidated, although there are a few reports concerning lipids in the brain and lipoproteins and apolipoproteins in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). To establish normal levels of lipoproteins in human CSF, total cholesterol, phospholipids, and fatty acids as well as apolipoprotein E (apoE) and apoA-I levels were determined in CSF samples from 216 individuals. For particle characterization, lipoproteins from human CSF were isolated by affinity chromatography and analyzed for size, lipid and apolipoprotein composition. Two consecutive immunoaffinity columns with antibodies, first against apoE and subsequently against apoA-I, were used to define four distinct lipoprotein classes. The major lipoprotein fraction consisted of particles of 13;-20 nm containing apoE and apoA-I as well as apoA-IV, apoD, apoH, and apoJ. In the second particle class (13;-18 nm) mainly apoA-I and apoA-II but no apoE was detected. Third, there was a small number of large particles (18;-22 nm) containing no apoA-I but apoE associated with apoA-IV, apoD, and apoJ. In the unbound fraction we detected small particles (10;-12 nm) with low lipid content containing apoA-IV, apoD, apoH, and apoJ. In summary, we established lipid and apolipoprotein levels in CSF in a large group of individuals and described four distinct lipoprotein classes in human CSF, differing in their apolipoprotein pattern, lipid composition, and size. On the basis of our own data and previous findings from other groups, we propose a classification of CSF lipoproteins.  相似文献

A total of 59 healthy male subjects (32 smokers and 27 nonsmokers) who had no reported systemic disease and did not take alcohol and vitamin supplementation were included. The levels of autoantibody to oxidized low-density lipoproteins (ox-LDL) in smokers and age-matched nonsmokers were compared. The plasma levels of antioxidants that can affect the formation of ox-LDL were also measured, and correlation analyses between anti ox-LDL IgG and plasma antioxidants, controlling for age and body mass index (BMI), were performed. Plasma alpha-tocopherol and uric acid concentrations of nonsmokers (2.78+/-1.09 microg/mg total lipid and 6.96+/-1.69 mg/dl, respectively) were significantly higher than those of smokers (1.68+/-0.48 microg/mg total lipid and 6.15+/-1.14 mg/dl, respectively) (P<0.05). Although plasma ascorbate and retinol levels were not significantly different between smokers and nonsmokers, smokers older than 45 years old had significantly lower plasma ascorbate levels (0.32+/-0.17 mg/dl) than age-matched nonsmokers (0. 53+/-0.14 mg/dl) (P=0.036). Higher level of plasma anti ox-LDL IgG was noted in the group of smokers compared with nonsmokers (515+/-409 mU/ml vs. 407+/-268 mU/ml, respectively) under the statistic method of Chi-Square test (P=0.049). A significant negative correlation was found between plasma anti ox-LDL IgG and alpha-tocopherol in the combined population as well as in the smoker group (r=-0.26, p=0.047; r=-0.48, p=0.006; respectively). However, there was no correlation between plasma anti ox-LDL IgG and the levels of other antioxidants. These results suggest that reduced concentrations of alpha-tocopherol are associated with cigarette smoking. The significantly negative correlation between plasma anti ox-LDL IgG and alpha-tocopherol in the entire study population as well as in the smoker group suggests that plasma alpha-tocopherol may be partially effective if not totally at protecting LDL from oxidative damage caused by cigarette smoking and dietary supplementation with alpha-tocopherol may provide a protective effect against LDL oxidation, especially in smokers.  相似文献

Hepatic stellate cells store the majority of the liver's retinoid (vitamin A) reserves as retinyl esters in stellate cell lipid droplets. A study was conducted to explore the effects of differences in dietary retinoid and triglyceride intake on the composition of the stellate cell lipid droplets. Weanling rats were placed on one of five diets that differed in retinoid or triglyceride contents. The dietary groups were: 1) control (2.4 mg retinol (as retinyl acetate)/kg diet and 20.5% of the calories supplied by triglyceride (as peanut oil]; 2) low retinol (0.6 mg retinol/kg diet and control triglyceride levels); 3) high retinol (24 mg retinol/kg diet and control triglyceride levels); 4) low triglyceride (2.4 mg retinol/kg diet and 5% of the calories supplied by triglyceride); and 5) high triglyceride (2.4 mg retinol/kg diet and 45% of the calories supplied by triglyceride). Stellate cells were isolated using the pronase-collagenase method and stellate cell lipid droplets were isolated by differential centrifugation. The levels of retinoids and other lipids were measured by high performance liquid chromatography. The stellate cells from control rats contained 113 micrograms total lipid/10(6) cells. Control stellate cell lipid droplets had the following mean percent lipid composition: 39.5% retinyl ester; 31.7% triglyceride; 15.4% cholesteryl ester; 4.7% cholesterol; 6.3% phospholipids; and 2.4% free fatty acids. Both the concentration of stellate cell lipids and the composition of stellate cell lipid droplets were markedly altered by changes in dietary retinoid. The low and high retinol groups contained, respectively, 82 and 566 micrograms total lipid/10(6) cells, with retinyl ester representing, respectively, 13.6% and 65.4% of the lipid present in the stellate cell lipid droplets. Low and high triglyceride groups were similar to controls in both stellate cell lipid content and the composition of the stellate cell lipid droplets. These findings indicate that the composition of stellate cell lipid droplets is strongly regulated by dietary retinoid status but not by dietary triglyceride intake.  相似文献

In the present study fibrinogen was assayed by the immunonephelometric method in 19 patients afflicted with hepatocarcinoma and 24 patients afflicted with cirrhosis. The two groups were similar in age, sex and presence of HbsAg. The incidence of values above the norm was significantly greater in patients with hepatocarcinoma (p less than 0.05). Then, the concentration of fibrinogen was measured in all using two other immunological methods (Laurell and Mancini) and two coagulative methods (Clauss and Ratnoff). A dysfibrinogenemia (an excess of fibrinogen assayed by immunological methods to be greater than 100 mg/dl with respect to biological methods). is more frequent using the Nephelometer-Clauss (p less than 0.01) and Mancini-Clauss (p less than 0.01) methods in patients with hepatocarcinoma with respect to those with cirrhosis. The study of the kinetics of antifibrinogen antigen-antibody reaction failed to show differences between patients with hepatocarcinoma or cirrhosis and normal subjects.  相似文献

The aim of this paper was to evaluate S-100 concentration in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from patients with different neurological disorders, and in subjects with no proven neurological pathology, in order to study possible differences in their protein concentrations. The total number of patient-samples examined was 119 (58 males and 61 females; mean age 35 yrs, 1-79 yrs). Based on the final diagnoses, nine patient groups were studied: a control group, meningitis, acute lymphatic leukemia (ALL), dementia, hydrocephalia, polyneuropathy-motor neuron disease, acute cerebral infarction (ACI), and patients diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. S-100 protein concentrations were measured by the Sangtec 100 two-site immunoradiometric assay. The highest S-100 levels in CSF were found in the dementia group, ACI group, bacterial-fungal and lymphocytic meningitis groups (Kruskal-Wallis test). The S-100 concentrations in these groups were significantly higher compared with the control group (Mann-Whitney U test, p<0.05, p<0.01) and the multiple sclerosis group (p<0.05, p<0.01). No other significant differences were found between groups. Our results suggest that the high protein levels in CSF found in these pathologies may reflect the presence of brain damage. However, the levels need to be considered individually, as they depend on several factors, such as age, severity of brain damage or interval between the onset of brain damage and the taking of the sample.  相似文献

The effects of moderate alcohol consumption on the capacity of blood sera to promote acceptance of cholesterol (C) from Fu5AH hepatoma cells, esterification of delivered free C, and transfer of produced cholesteryl esters to apolipoprotein (apo) B-containing lipoproteins have been studied. Twenty male subjects with relatively high (>50 mg/dl, n = 10) and low (<50 mg/dl, n = 10) high density lipoprotein (HDL) C levels consumed for eight weeks red grape wine (0.3 g ethanol/kg body mass per day). Alcohol consumption reduced total C and low density lipoprotein C levels in both groups of subjects. Low HDL C subjects showed an increase in HDL C, apo AI, apo AII, and lipoprotein (Lp) AI particle levels after alcohol consumption. Alcohol did not affect free C efflux from the cells. However, after the following period of substitution of alcohol with an isocaloric amount of red grape juice, cellular C efflux markedly reduced. While lecithin:cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) activity increased during alcohol consumption only in subjects with low HDL C, high HDL C subjects showed a significant decrease in cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) activity. At the same time, alcohol consumption reduced the endogenous C esterification rate and increased the transfer of endogenous cholesteryl esters to apo B-containing lipoproteins in both groups. Thus, alcohol consumption in moderate doses enhanced the anti-atherogenicity of the serum lipoprotein spectrum, supporting more effective C efflux from peripheral cells and transport of accepted C to apo B-containing lipoproteins. The effects of alcohol on the reverse cholesterol transport depend on the initial HDL C level.  相似文献

This study describes the changes in biochemical composition of follicular fluid during reproductive acyclicity in buffalo. A total of 73 pairs of ovaries collected from 26 reproductively acyclic and 47 reproductively cyclic buffaloes were used in the investigation. Ovarian follicles were classified into small (5.0-6.9 mm), medium (7.0-9.9 mm) and large (≥10.0 mm) sized categories depending upon their diameter. Follicular fluid was aspirated, processed and assayed for glucose, cholesterol, total protein, acid phosphatase and alkaline phosphatase. Glucose concentration was lesser in reproductively acyclic compared to cyclic buffaloes (19.3 ± 2.59 mg/dl compared to 32.6 ± 2.60 mg/dl; P<0.05), mainly due to difference in concentration between small sized follicles (12.4 ± 2.59 mg/dl compared to 28.0 ± 3.32 mg/dl; P<0.05). Cholesterol concentration was also lesser in reproductively acyclic compared to cyclic buffaloes (32.2 ± 2.14 mg/dl compared to 35.5 ± 2.16 mg/dl; P<0.05) and this was related to the lesser concentration found in large follicles (13.8 ± 3.45 mg/dl compared to 37.2 ± 4.10mg/dl; P<0.001). Total protein and acid phosphatase levels were not affected by either the reproductive cyclicity status or the follicular size (4.9 ± 1.07 g/dl to 6.0 ± 0.28 g/dl and 1.2 ± 0.17 U/dl to 2.5 ± 1.22 U/dl, respectively). An increased alkaline phosphatase activity was, however, observed in reproductively acyclic compared to cyclic buffaloes (27.5 ± 3.08 U/dl compared to 14.0 ± 1.09 U/dl; P<0.0001). In conclusion, results of the present study indicate an alteration in the biochemical composition of follicular fluid during reproductive acyclicity in buffalo. The findings provide further support to the notion that poor nutrition is an important factor triggering reproductive acyclicity in buffalo.  相似文献

The lipids and lipoproteins — cholesterol (C), triglyceride (TG) and high-density, low-density, very-low-density and sinking pre-β-lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C, LDL-C, VLDL-C and SPB-C) — in plasma samples from 1620 fasting white adults and children from the Toronto—Hamilton area were analysed. The mean concentration of HDL-C was about 45 mg/dl in men and about 60 mg/dl in women, and the levels were constant throughout adult life in both sexes. Boys had higher mean HDL-C levels than men, but girls had lower mean HDL-C levels than women. Mean LDL-C levels, like total C levels, increased with age, from about 87 mg/dl in boys to 136 mg/dl in men, and from about 91 mg/dl in girls to 145 mg/dl in women. The mean levels of VLDL-C followed the TG patterns for age and sex, rising from about 7 mg/dl in boys to 26 mg/dl in men, and from about 11 mg/dl in girls to 19 mg/dl in women. SPB-C was detectable visually in 39% of the population and with the aid of densitometry in 54%; the levels were not related to age, sex or oral contraceptive use, and the median level was 3 mg/dl.Prevalence estimates of hyperlipoproteinemia showed that type IV was the most common, and it was found more than three times as often in men as in women. This was in part due to the customary use of plasma TG cut-off points that do not reflect the large difference in TG levels between males and females. Type IIA hyperlipoproteinemia was found in about 2% of the adults and type IIb in a further 1%. Types I, III and V were all rare. The prevalence of types II and IV hyperlipoproteinemia was four times greater in women using oral contraceptives than in nonusers in the same age range.  相似文献

We describe a study of the seasonal variations of hedgehog plasma lipids and lipoproteins and their correlation with changes in the activities of the thyroid and testis. In ten male hedgehogs, plasma concentrations of lipids, thyroxine and testosterone were assayed each month for 1 year beginning in September, while plasma lipoproteins from five of these animals were analyzed at the same dates using density gradient ultracentrifugation. All classes of plasma lipids (cholesterol, total glycerol and phospholipids) exhibited statistically significant seasonal variations in their respective concentrations, with simultaneous maxima (cholesterol: 207 +/- 39 mg/100 ml; total glycerol: 50 +/- 9 mg/100 ml; phospholipids: 266 +/- 25 mg/100 ml) during late fall-early winter, i.e., during the period of the year when plasma levels of both thyroxine and testosterone were minimal. Plasma lipids subsequently decreased to minimal levels either in early summer (cholesterol: 129 +/- 18 mg/100 ml; phospholipids: 178 +/- 20 mg/100 ml) or in late winter (total glycerol: 22 +/- 9 mg/100 ml). Very low density lipoproteins (d less than 1.015 g/ml) were found at low levels (less than 15 mg/100 ml) during the cold months, and then became detectable as trace components only. The total concentration of the mixed lipoprotein population (i.e., low density lipoproteins, Lp(a), and high density lipoprotein (HDL)-like particles) in the d 1.015-1.065 g/ml interval decreased by almost 50% from January to February (from 164.3 to 89.2 mg/100 ml), i.e., following a 10-fold increase in the level of plasma testosterone, and immediately before the rapid doubling in plasma thyroxine concentration. The staining intensity of the electrophoretic band with migration characteristics corresponding to those of Lp(a) decreased considerably during winter. At the same period of the year, lower density (1.032-1.055 g/ml) HDL-like particles disappeared. The concentration of lipoproteins with d 1.065-1.162 g/ml, which included Lp(a) particles in addition to typical HDL, equally underwent seasonal variations. These variations consisted of two successive maxima in late fall (426.4 mg/100 ml) and late winter (458.3 mg/100 ml) with two subsequent decreases leading to minima in February (327.8 mg/100 ml) and August (257.1 mg/100 ml). Finally, very high density lipoproteins (d 1.162-1.259 g/ml) were heterogeneous, containing both cholesterol-rich (d 1.162-1.227 g/ml) and phospholipid-rich (d 1.194-1.259 g/ml) subpopulations.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献
