The Aquatic Warbler Acrocephalus paludicola is one of the most threatened Western Palearctic passerine species, classified as globally Vulnerable. With its breeding grounds relatively secure, a clear need remains for the monitoring and protection of the migration and wintering grounds of this rare and endangered migrant. Recent research has shown that the Aquatic Warbler migrates through northwest Africa in autumn and spring. The wintering grounds are apparently limited to wetlands of sub-Saharan West Africa, with records from only about 20 localities in Mauritania, Mali, Senegal and Ghana. Given the lack of knowledge of its whereabouts, we decided to use the available data to predict the wintering distribution of the Aquatic Warbler with the help of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). We used a novel approach to model the distribution of rarely recorded species, which is based on a combination of presence-only and presence–absence modelling techniques. Using the program BIOMOD, we thus generated four progressively more conservative predictions of where the Aquatic Warbler overwinters in Africa. Whereas the most permissive model predicts the Aquatic Warbler to be found in a latitudinal band stretching from the Senegal river delta all the way to the Red Sea coast, the most restrictive model suggests a much smaller area concentrated within the regions around the Senegal river delta in northern Senegal and southern Mauritania and around the Niger inundation zone in southern Mali and eastern Burkina Faso. Such model predictions may be useful guidelines to focus further field research on the Aquatic Warbler. Given the excellent model predictions in this study, this novel technique may prove useful to model the distribution of other rare and endangered species, thus providing a means to guide future survey efforts.  相似文献

It is well documented that plant and animal phenology is changing in response to recent climate warming in the Palaearctic. However, few long-term data sets are currently available in the Mediterranean basin. The present study reports long-term temporal trends of several phenophases of 45 plants, 4 insects and 6 migratory insectivorous birds. Dynamic factor analyses performed with plant phenophases showed that most of those events occurring at spring and summer had common trends toward the advancement, especially since mid-1970s. However, during these last decades, insect phenology showed a steeper advance than plant phenology, suggesting an increase of decoupling of some plant–insect interactions, such as those between pollinators and flowers or herbivorous insects and their plant resources. All trans-Saharan bird species showed highly significant temporal trends in all studied phenophases (some of them covering most of the last century). In two species, the duration of stay is increasing due to both earlier arrivals and later departures. On the other hand, two wintering species showed a significant advancement in their arrival dates, while an opposite pattern were found for departures of each one. Only one of these species increased significantly its wintering stay. Bird departures were not related to local climate in any species. Our results demonstrate a key role of local temperatures behind interannual variability of most plant and insects phenophases, with especial emphasis in those occurring in spring and summer. Therefore, the common signal towards the advancement recorded since mid-1970s resulted from the recent rise in temperatures.  相似文献

During the highest spring tides the intertidal sediment flats of estuaries are fully inundated at high water, and waders have no choice but to move to supratidal roosts, e.g. on open farmland, saltpans or beaches. However, in many estuaries during the lowest neap or intermediate tides there are sectors of upper intertidal sediment flats that remain exposed even at the peak of high water, and so waders have the choice of roosting either there or in supratidal sites. In the Tagus Estuary, Portugal, as elsewhere, waders use both types of roosts during high water. Our main objective was to understand what makes waders opt for one of these two types of available roosts. We monitored wader use of saltpans and intertidal roosts from spring to neap tides, and measured foraging and alarm behaviour, prey availability and disturbance by predators. Most of the wader species studied chose intertidal (mudflat) roosts whenever these were available, and only roosted in saltpans during the peak of spring tides. We hypothesized that this preference was explained either by an attempt (i) to continue feeding into the high water period, or (ii) to minimize predation risk. Extending feeding time into the high water period did not seem to be very relevant for roost choice because both prey availability and foraging activity were low in both types of roosts. However, predator disturbance was several times higher in the saltpans than in the intertidal roosts, suggesting that this factor may be the determinant in the choice of roost type.  相似文献

Many migratory bird species have undergone recent population declines, but there is considerable variation in trends between species and between populations employing different migratory routes. Understanding species-specific migratory behaviours is therefore of critical importance for their conservation. The Common Sandpiper Actitis hypoleucos is an Afro-Palaearctic migratory bird species whose European populations are in decline. We fitted geolocators to individuals breeding in England or wintering in Senegal to determine their migration routes and breeding or non-breeding locations. We used these geolocator data in combination with previously published data from Scottish breeding birds to determine the distributions and migratory connectivity of breeding (English and Scottish) and wintering (Senegalese) populations of the Common Sandpiper, and used simulated random migrations to investigate wind assistance during autumn and spring migration. We revealed that the Common Sandpipers tagged in England spent the winter in West Africa, and that at least some birds wintering in Senegal bred in Scandinavia; this provides insights into the links between European breeding populations and their wintering grounds. Furthermore, birds tagged in England, Scotland and Senegal overlapped considerably in their migration routes and wintering locations, meaning that local breeding populations could be buffered against habitat change, but susceptible to large-scale environmental changes. These findings also suggest that contrasting population trends in England and Scotland are unlikely to be the result of population-specific migration routes and wintering regions. Finally, we found that birds used wind to facilitate their migration in autumn, but less so in spring, when the wind costs associated with their migrations were higher than expected at random. This was despite the wind costs of simulated migrations being significantly lower in spring than in autumn. Indeed, theory suggests that individuals are under greater time pressures in spring than in autumn because of the time constraints associated with reproduction.  相似文献

The population decline of the Lesser Kestrel Falco naumanni has been the subject of studies across its Western Palaearctic breeding range, but little is known about its use of pre‐migratory areas or African wintering quarters. We used geolocators to describe the temporal and spatial patterns of Portuguese Lesser Kestrel migration and wintering behaviour. Data on the complete migration were obtained from four individuals and another three provided further information. Prior to southward migration, Lesser Kestrels showed two different behaviours: northward‐orientated movements to Spain and movements in the proximity of the breeding area. Autumn migration took place mostly in late September; spring departures occurred mainly in the first half of February. Wintering grounds included Senegal, Mauritania and Mali, with individuals overlapping considerably in Senegal. Movements registered within the wintering grounds suggest itinerant behaviour in relation to local flushes of prey. During spring migration, birds crossed the Sahara Desert through Mauritania, Western Sahara and Morocco before passing over the Mediterranean to reach Portugal. Autumn migration lasted 4.8 ± 1.1 days, and spring migration lasted 4.1 ± 0.3 days. The mean daily flight range varied between approximately 300 and 850 km for an entire journey of around 2500 km. Effective protection of roosting sites in both pre‐migratory and wintering areas and maintaining grasshopper populations in Sahelian wintering quarters appear crucial in preserving this threatened migratory raptor across its African–Eurasian flyway. There was no evidence of any deleterious effects of fitting birds with loggers.  相似文献

During spring and autumn 1970 and 1971 the movements of terns off the coast of Ghana near Accra were studied by radar. In autumn, dense movements were recorded within 22 km of the coast both day and night from July to early December. Fluctuations in the magnitude of the movements suggest that the terns were on passage through the Gulf of Guinea. Simultaneous to these movements were roosting flights into shore roosts and both movements appeared independent.
In contrast, no spring movements along the coastline were detected either by radar or visually from the land. Although small tern flocks probably moved westwards within 22 km of the coast, but outside their detectable radar range, the results suggest that the majority of terns return through the Gulf of Guinea by a different route from that taken in autumn.
The difference between spring and autumn movements correlates well with the seasonal variation of the terns' food sources. In autumn, upwellings result in an abundant fish supply (sardines) in the surface waters close to land, whereas in spring, fish is abundant only well off shore such as at fronts (convergences) and upwellings (divergences) both of which have been located as far as 600 km from the coast.  相似文献

The southern limit of the distribution of seagrass species along the west coast of Africa is not yet clearly defined. In March 2008 an expedition was organized in Senegal to search for seagrass beds from Dakar (14°45'15" N, 17°30'31" W) southwards to Tabakouta–Delta du Saloum (13°46'59" N, 16°28'42" W). Cymodocea nodosa and Halodule wrightii were observed in sandy areas of some protected bays of Dakar, around Sarène (14°16'18" N, 16°54'17" W), Joal Fadiouth (14°09'08" N, 16°50'03" W) and the Bamboung–Sourou area (13°50'08" N, 16°33'09" W), and they probably occur all along the coast of Senegal and beyond, perhaps much further south as well.  相似文献

Many studies in recent years have demonstrated long‐term temporal trends in biological parameters that can only be explained by climate change. Bird phenology has received great attention, as it studies one of the most conspicuous, popular, and easily observable phenomena in nature. There are many studies of long‐term changes in spring arrival dates, most of which concur with earlier records from the last few decades. However, few data are available for autumn departures or length of stays. Furthermore, existing data offer an equivocal picture. In this study, we analysed a huge database of about 44 000 records for five trans‐Saharan bird species (Ciconia ciconia, Cuculus canorus, Apus apus, Hirundo rustica and Luscinia megarhynchos). Data were collected from over 1300 sites around Spain during the period 1944–2004. Common spring arrival patterns were found in all species. Spring arrival dates have tended to advance since the mid‐1970s. Current dates are similar to those from the 1940s (except for C. ciconia). Thus, the advance of spring migration over the last three decades could be seen as a return to the initial timing of arrival dates, after abnormally delayed arrivals during the 1970s. A strong negative relationship with temperature in Spain at arrival time was observed in all species. A negative relationship with the Sahel Index (a measurement of precipitation in the African Sahel area during the rainy season) for the previous year was also found in C. canorus, A. apus and H. rustica. Regarding autumn departures, all species showed common interdecadal fluctuations, but only H. rustica is leaving earlier Spain at present. All species departed earlier in years that had higher temperatures during their reproductive period. However, only for H. rustica the relation between Spanish temperatures at departure time and the last sightings of individuals was significant. A heterogeneous temporal response for the length of stay was also found: C. ciconia increased, A. apus did not change and H. rustica decreased its stay. This is the first study, based on an extensive bird phenology observational network covering a large region, that shows the most complete and thorough analysis available for the Mediterranean region.  相似文献

Eider migration in southern Scandinavia in spring 1972 was studied simultaneously at three radar stations and ten field observation sites. The Eiders winter in Danish and West German waters, from which they set out on spring migration on courses ranging from SE to NE; those from the northern part of the wintering area flew SE, those from the south NE, while birds wintering in between these geographical extremes set out on intermediate courses around E. Radar showed that most Eiders fly over the island of Zealand and the peninsula of Skåne, but only exceptionally further north over Sweden. Few Eiders crossing land were registered by field observers and most evidently passed at high altitudes beyond the range of vision. After having crossed Skåne, on varying tracks both south and north of east, the Eiders descended and changed flight direction towards NE. Some Eiders from the northern part of the wintering area circumnavigated Skåne, passing south along the Swedish coast of the Sound, crossing the very narrow peninsula of Falsterbo, and subsequently following the south coast of Skåne eastwards. Eiders from southern Denmark and Germany were often deflected eastwards along the south coast. After having passed Skåne no significant land crossings were made. Upon reaching the province of Blekinge on a course towards NE, the Eiders were deflected E to ESE along the coast and later NNE along the west coast of Öland through Kalmar sound. Approximately 350 000 ducks migrated during daytime of the study period, 250 000 crossing the land of Skåne while 100 000 passed along the south coast. Almost 300 000 migrated north in Kalmar sound, and 17 % of all Eiders passed east of Gland over the open sea. Three distinct peaks of activity during the day were noted in Skåne. The first, at around sunrise, originated from birds resting in waters off Skåne. The second occurred about four hours later and probably consisted of birds which had departed from the wintering area in the early morning. A final peak at sunset was often recorded. Migration also took place during the night, but involved only one fifth of the total number. From combined radar and field counts the total Baltic Eider population is estimated to have been 700 000–800 000 in spring 1972, indicating about 300 000 breeding pairs in the Baltic Sea.  相似文献

1. From 1966 to 1995, dates were recorded when adult alder-flies, Sialis lutaria L., were first seen (30-year range: 23 April – 25 May), 50% of the maximum density occurred (4 May – 4 June), and maximum density occurred (11 May – 17 June) along 200 m of Windermere shore. These emergence dates occurred at similar temperatures, estimated by mean values for both the emergence date and the week prior to emergence. The latter was the least variable at 10.1 °C (95% CL ± 0.37) for start of emergence, 11.2 °C (± 0.49) for 50% maximum density, 14.2 °C (± 0.51) for maximum density.
2. Final-instar larvae pupated in damp soil just above the water line. As laboratory temperatures were increased slowly from an initial 5 °C, the cumulative number of larvae leaving the water to pupate increased. A quadratic equation described this relationship from a threshold temperature of 7.2 °C to completion at 14.0 °C (50% point, 9.3 °C). The relationship between successful pupations and constant temperatures in the laboratory was well described by a quadratic equation with an optimum 14.9 °C (over 90% success) and no success outside the range 7–23 °C. A negative power-function described the relationship between days required for pupation and temperature, ranging from c . 28 days at 8.2 °C to c . 4 days at 22.1 °C.
3. Dates for larvae leaving the lake to pupate were back-calculated from dates for adult emergence, using the power-function for pupation time. Mean temperatures for estimated dates on which larvae left the lake to pupate were less variable than those for adult emergence, being 7.5 °C (± 0.20) for the start of pupation, 9.4 °C (± 0.16) for 50% maximum density, 13.7 °C (± 0.16) for maximum density. These values are similar to those obtained in the laboratory and can be used to predict pupation and adult emergence for different temperature regimes.  相似文献

Most wintering wildfowl species increased in numbers on the Dungeness Reserve during the period 1969-87, particularly teal, gadwall and wigeon. Wigeon, teal and gadwall showed the fastest rates of increase. An exponential model provided a better fit to the data for smew and gadwall than a linear one. Populations were more or less as variable in number in the early years of management (1969-77) as in subsequent years (1978-86).
Of wintering and passage wader species, turnstone, redshank, black-tailed godwit and common sandpiper increased. Snipe showed a decline in abundance in spring. Numbers of black terns, the only non-wading migrant analysed, remained variable over the period.
Breeding tufted duck and great-crested grebe increased in numbers during the period 1969-86 whereas mallard declined. Black-headed gull numbers increased, as did exponentially-breeding common and sandwich terns. Of four passerine species analysed, only breeding reed warblers increased during the period 1968-86, whereas numbers of breeding sedge warbler and whitethroat remained stable. Wheatear numbers declined in early years but have increased since 1983.
Increases in species richness were documented in wintering and passage, and breeding species.  相似文献

The spoon-billed sandpiper is endemic of the northern Russian Far East and one of the rarest wader species in the world. During a field survey (summer 2002) of the coast of Kolyuchinskaya Bay and in lagoons located to the east, it was discovered that the species breeding population has declined by 3–5 times since the 1970s and amounted to only 42–50 breeding pairs. The reasons for this decline are uncertain. They seem to occur outside the breeding grounds, on staging or wintering areas in South Eastern Asia. The breeding productivity of the spoon-billed sandpiper is relatively low, but it did not decrease in recent decades. The breeding success in 2002 was higher than in the 1980s; however, it was still about half of the minimum level necessary to keep the local breeding population stable. Annual survival of the spoon-billed sandpiper is about 5–15% lower than in several other small Calidridinae waders. An increased mortality rather than decreased productivity appears to be responsible for the general decline of the spoon-billed sandpiper population. In the early 2000s, its total world population was estimated at 350–500 breeding pairs. The estimate of the spoonbilled sandpiper population obtained by Flint and Kondratyev (1977) is likely an overestimate.  相似文献

The North American greater snow goose population has increased dramatically during the last 40 years. We evaluated whether refuge creation, changes in land use on the wintering and staging grounds, and climate warming have contributed to this expansion by affecting the distribution, habitat use, body condition, and migration phenology of birds. We also reviewed the effects of the increasing population on marshes on the wintering grounds, along the migratory routes and on the tundra in summer. Refuges established before 1970 may have contributed to the initial demographic increase. The most important change, however, was the switch from a diet entirely based on marsh plants in spring and winter (rhizomes of Scirpus/Spartina) to one dominated by crops (corn/young grass shoots) during the 1970s and 1980s. Geese now winter further north along the US Atlantic coast, leading to reduced hunting mortality. Their migratory routes now include portions of southwestern Québec where corn production has increased exponentially. Since the mid‐1960s, average temperatures have increased by 1–2.4°C throughout the geographic range of geese, which may have contributed to the northward shift in wintering range and an earlier migration in spring. Access to spilled corn in spring improved fat reserves upon departure for the Arctic and may have contributed to a high fecundity. The population increase has led to intense grazing of natural wetlands used by geese although these habitats are still largely undamaged. The foraging in fields allowed the population to exceed limits imposed by natural marshes in winter and spring, but also prevented permanent damage because of their overgrazing.  相似文献

Recent technological advancements now allow us to obtain geographical position data for a wide range of animal movements. Here we used light-level geolocators to study the annual migration cycle in great reed warblers (Acrocephalus arundinaceus), a passerine bird breeding in Eurasia and wintering in sub-Saharan Africa. We were specifically interested in seasonal strategies in routes and schedules of migration. We found that the great reed warblers (all males, no females were included) migrated from the Swedish breeding site in early August. After spending up to three weeks at scattered stopover sites in central to south-eastern Europe, they resumed migration and crossed the Mediterranean Sea and Sahara Desert without lengthy stopovers. They then spread out over a large overwintering area and each bird utilised two (or even three) main wintering sites that were spatially separated by a distinct mid-winter movement. Spring migration initiation date differed widely between individuals (1-27 April). Several males took a more westerly route over the Sahara in spring than in autumn, and in general there were fewer long-distance travels and more frequent shorter stopovers, including one in northern Africa, in spring. The shorter stopovers made spring migration on average faster than autumn migration. There was a strong correlation between the spring departure dates from wintering sites and the arrival dates at the breeding ground. All males had a high migration speed in spring despite large variation in departure dates, indicating a time-minimization strategy to achieve an early arrival at the breeding site; the latter being decisive for high reproductive success in great reed warblers. Our results have important implications for the understanding of long-distance migrants’ ability to predict conditions at distant breeding sites and adapt to rapid environmental change.  相似文献

The present study tested the hypothesis that Allothunnus fallai can elevate its slow-oxidative red myotomal muscle (RM) temperature. Measurements on 30 A. fallai (750–850 mm fork length) captured by hook and line off the coast of southern New Zealand revealed that RM temperatures are elevated by mean ± s . d . 8·1 ± 1·3° C (range 6·7–10·0° C) above the mean ± s . d . ambient sea surface temperature 15·3 ± 0·8° C (range 14·3 to 16·4° C). These data provide evidence that the vascular modifications to the central circulation of A. fallai act as a counter-current heat exchanger and that RM heat conservation is a character state present in all extant tuna species.  相似文献

Mesoplodon perrini , a new species of beaked whale is described on the basis of five animals stranded on the coast of California (between 32°55'N, 117°15'W and 36°37'N, 121°55'W) from May 1975 to September 1997. Four of these animals were initially identified as Hector's beaked whales M. hectori based on cranial morphology (Mead 1981). A fifth specimen was initially identified as a neonate Cuvier's beaked whale Ziphius cavirostris based on external features. These specimens were first recognized as representatives of an undescribed species through phylogenetic analysis of mitochondrial (mt) DNA control region and cytochrome b sequence data. Although similar morphologically, the genetic data do not support a close evolutionary relationship between M. perrini and M. hectori . Instead, these data suggest a possible sister species relationship with the lesser beaked whale M. peruvianus . Sightings of two small beaked whales off California in the 1970s which were tentatively identified as M. hectori are also likely to be M. perrini . We suggest that M. hectori is confined to the Southern Hemisphere, while M. perrini is known to date only from the North Pacific.  相似文献

1.?Climate change has been associated with shifts in the timing of biological events, including the spring arrival of migratory birds. Early arrival at breeding sites is an important life-history trait, usually associated with higher breeding success and therefore, susceptible to selection and evolution in response to changing climatic conditions. 2.?Here, we examine the effect of changes in the environmental conditions of wintering and passage areas on the mean passage time of 13 trans-Saharan passerines during their spring migration through the western Mediterranean over the 15 years from 1993 to 2007. 3.?We found that most of the species studied have been advancing the timing of their passage in recent years. However, annual variation in the mean date of passage was positively correlated with vegetation growth (measured as the normalized difference vegetation index [NDVI]) both in the Sahel (the region of departure) and in northern Africa (the passage area). Thus, migration dates were delayed in years with high primary productivity in passage and wintering zones. All species seem to respond similarly to NDVI in the Sahel; however, late migrants were less affected by ecological conditions in northern Africa than those migrating earlier, suggesting differences based on species ecology. 4.?Mean timing of passage was not related to the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), El Ni?o-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), temperature or NDVI in the species-specific wintering areas (the overwintering region) when analysed in combination with the other covariates. 5.?Our findings show that ecological conditions in the winter quarters (specifically the Sahel) and en route are relevant factors influencing trends in the passage dates of trans-Saharan migratory birds on the southern fringe of Europe. Possible long-term consequences for late arriving spring migrants are discussed.  相似文献
