The aim of the present study was to investigate the adaptation of coexisting Ephemera orientalis (Ephemeroptera: Ephemeridae) cohorts to flood timing. Larvae were collected from the Han River (Seoul, Korea) from 2012 to 2014, and their life history was assessed by measuring head capsule width and by comparing the emergence period of the insects in relation with the flood season. Two slow‐growing cohorts (S1 and S2) and one fast‐growing cohort (F) were identified. The S1 cohort was found to hatch in June or July and to emerge the following summer. Whereas, the S2 cohort was found to hatch in August or September and emerge the following August. Early‐hatching larvae from the S1 cohort became the F cohort through the process of cohort splitting and subsequently merged with the S2 cohort. The F cohort, however, was not observed when huge floods occurred or under low temperature conditions. Furthermore, floods that resulted from >80 mm precipitation significantly reduced larval abundance; therefore, flooding affects cohorts both directly and indirectly. Most cohorts emerged before and after the flood season (July 10 to August 10). The results of the present study indicate that the emergence period of E. orientalis has evolved to avoid the flood season.  相似文献

Life history aspects of Ephemera orientalis, a common lowland burrowing mayfly that resides in temperate East Asia, were studied in terms of voltinism, secondary production, and accumulated degree days for larval development. From March 1998 to June 1999, larvae were sampled monthly (weekly or biweekly during the emergence period) from a lower reach of the Gapyeong stream in Korea, a stream typical of temperate East Asia, using a Surber sampler (0.25 m2, mesh 0.25 mm). As a result, the mean density of E. orientalis was 47.21 ± 13.58 indiv. m−2 during the study period. Very small larvae less than 2 mm in body length were sampled on three separate occasions, and emergence was observed between late April and early October, except during late May. Based on the larval body length distribution and emergence time, two different developmental groups could be distinguished: the slow developmental group (S-group) and the fast developmental group (F-group). The F-group completed its life cycle within 4 months, whereas the S-group had a one-year life cycle. The S-group could be divided into two subgroups, dubbed the S1 and S2-groups, based on larval development. The developmental groups alternate their life cycles in the order: S1→F→S2→S1. Estimated annual production of the larvae was 68.81 mg DW m−2 y−1; mean biomass was 8.43 mg DW m−2; the annual production to mean biomass ratio was 8.16. The annual mean water temperature of the study year was 14.76 ± 6.63°C. The total accumulated degree days for larval development was 1396°C for the F-group, 2,055°C for the S1-group, and 1,975°C for the S2-group. Two different adult body size groups were distinguished (P < 0.001 by t-test): larger adults, which belonged to the S-group, were present throughout the emergence period, whereas smaller adults, which belonged to the F-group, were mainly present later in the emergence period (August–October). The difference in the accumulated degree days between the developmental groups may explain the size differences of adults.  相似文献

In the newly laid egg of the mayfly Ephemera japonica, an egg nucleus (oocyte nucleus) at metaphase of the first maturation division is in the polar plasm at the mid-ventral side of the egg, and a male pronucleus lies in the periplasm beneath a micropyle situated just opposite the polar plasm or at the mid-dorsal side of egg. The maturation divisions are typical. An extensive and circuitous migration of the male pronucleus is involved in the fertilization process: it first moves anteriad in the periplasm from beneath the micropyle to the anterior pole of the egg and then turns posteriad in the yolk along the egg's long axis to the site of syngamy, near the center of the egg. Cleavage is superficial. The successive eight cleavages, of which the first five are synchronized, result in the formation of the blastoderm, and about ten primary yolk cells remain behind in the yolk. Even in the newly formed blastoderm, the thick embryonic posterior half and the thin extraembryonic anterior half areas are distinguished: the former cells are concentrated at the posterior pole of the egg to form the germ disc, and the latter cells become more flattened, forming serosa. Time-lapse VTR observations reveal a yolk stream that is in accord with the migration of the male pronucleus in time and direction. The yolk stream is also generated in activated unfertilized eggs, and it is probable that the migration of the male pronucleus in association with the fertilization may be directed by the yolk stream. Molecular phylogeny of the four Korean Ephemera species, Ephemera orientalis, E. sachalinensis, E. strigata, and E. separigata, was inferred from 630 bp sequences of the partial mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) gene. Results indicated that mean intraspecific sequence divergences were 0.70%, whereas mean interspecific divergences were 15.75%, and 17 samples were distinguished to four species correctly by COI sequences. The results also demonstrated that four species of Korean Ephemera assembled a monophyletic group with high support in maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood analyses. This Ephemera group was divided into two major clades of E. orientalisE. sachalinensis and E. strigataE. separigata. Furthermore, we demonstrated that this phylogeny explained altitudinal and habitat adaptations of Korean Ephemera species. The E. orientalisE. sachalinensis clade, a widespread and lowland‐adapted mayfly group, retained plesiomorphic traits such as paired stripes on abdominal segments and was regarded as plesiotypic in terms of habitat adaptation, compared to the geographically more limited and upland‐adapted E. strigataE. separigata clade.  相似文献

Swarming and mating behaviors of a mayfly species, Ephemera orientalis Mclachlan, 1875 were observed in 2015, 2016, and 2018 at a river bank of the Asahi River, Japan. Males started to make swarms between late April and middle May in 2016 and 2018. The numbers of mated pairs in a swarm correlated with the numbers of flying males in a swarm in 2016 and 2018. Swarms were formed during a limited period at dusk most probably because that interval is free from natural enemies. Males competed with each other to copulate with females in swarms. We clarified the function of the forelegs of males, which are significantly longer than those of females. Males used their forelegs to hold up a female from below. Besides forelegs, males have longer tails than females. We will discuss why sexual differences are found in these traits. Our results represent the first observation of swarm mating behavior in E. orientalis.  相似文献

Field-collected populations of mayflies, Ephemera orientalis were tested for susceptibility to 10 different insecticides using a direct-contact mortality bioassay. Ephemera orientalis subimagoes were susceptible to the insecticides chlorpyrifos, fenitrothion and chlorfenapyr with LD50 values of 69.7, 78.8 and 81.9 μg/♀, and adults had LD50 values of 71.9, 78.8 and 85.4 μg/♀, respectively. Susceptibility ratios (SRs) of subimagoes and adults of E. orientalis to the 10 insecticides were 1.0 to1.2 folds. The mayflies showed higher susceptibility to organophosphates than to pyrethroids. The SRs of Anopheles sinensis to E. orientalis were 514 to 1438 folds higher for organophosphates (LD50 values of 0.05 to 0.23 μg/♀) and 62 to 1155 folds higher for pyrethroids (LD50 values of 0.13 to 2.41 μg/♀). The SRs of Culex pipiens to E. orientalis were 606 to 3595 folds higher for organophosphates with LD50 values of 0.02–0.17 μg/♀ and 81 to 1365 folds higher for pyrethroids with LD50 values of 0.11–1.83 μg/♀. These results indicate that the use of ineffective insecticides will result in unsatisfactory control against field populations of the subimagoes and adults of E. orientalis.  相似文献

Embryogenesis of the mayfly Ephemera japonica is described, with special reference to the abdominal morphogenesis. Cleavage is of the typical superficial type. The germ disc is formed by the cell concentration of the embryonic area broadly defined at the posterior half of the blastoderm. The embryo undergoes embryogenesis of the typical short germ type. Blastokinesis in which the extensive and deep invagination of the embryo is involved is similar to those of odonatans and plecopterans. In the longest embryo stage, the abdomen is folded and is divided into four regions (regions I–IV, from anterior to posterior). All the first to eleven segments are derived from regions I and II. Regions III and IV fuse together to form the proctodaeum. This manner of abdominal formation may be regarded as basic in pterygote insects, because a similar manner is found in another palaeopteran group, the odonatans. The caudal filament has been interpreted as the elongation of the eleventh abdominal tergum, but it is now revealed that the caudal filament originates from the posterior extremity of region IV and that its origin is away from the eleventh segment, with regions III and IV or the proctodaeum interposing between. Thus, it is concluded that the caudal filament should be correlated not to the eleventh abdominal segment but to the telson. J. Morphol. 234:97–107, 1997. © 1997 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. The life cycle of the mayfly, Ephemera danica , was studied on two contrasted sites on the River Lambourn between 1971 and 1979.
2. Quantitative samples of nymphs were taken on the five major biotopes of the river bed, gravel, silt, Ranunculus, Berula and Callitriche . Exposed areas of gravel and silt held significantly lower densities of nymphs than the three macro-phytes with their underlying substrata. The sandy substratum underlying beds of Berula frequently held significantly higher densities than the other macrophytes.
3. Monthly samples from March 1971 to April 1972 followed by samples in June and December from 1972 to 1979 indicated that the nymphal phase normally took 2 years in the River Lambourn.
4. All odd-numbered years from 1971 to 1979 produced weak year-classes. In contrast, all even-numbered years between 1970 and 1978, with the exception of 1972, produced relatively strong year-classes.
5. Meteorological data for the period of flight activity in E.danica indicated that conditions were colder and damper in 1972 than in the other even-numbered years of the study, when recruitment was more successful.  相似文献

Abstract The nymphal biology of a population of Torleya major (Klapálek) in southern Iberian Peninsula was studied. An atypical life cycle pattern is described, with eggs hatching in August producing a fast‐developing cohort with adults emerging in autumn and a second slow‐developing cohort with adults emerging in spring of the following year. Nymphal growth occurred primarily in summer–autumn (in the first cohort) and in spring (in the second). The origin of such a life history is discussed. Nymphs were collector‐gatherers, consuming mainly detritus. Although ontogenetic shifts on the use of trophic resources were detected, similar food was utilized during the months when both cohorts cohabited, eliminating the possibility that the rapid growth of the first cohort could be related to the utilization of different food resources.  相似文献

1. Populations of a number of sub‐tropical stream insect species have been found to show unexpected patterns of genetic variation, with more differences between samples from the same stream than between whole streams or between subcatchments. Many samples also showed deviations from Hardy–Weinberg proportions. It has been proposed that these patterns result from limited numbers of matings contributing to a given stream reach, because adults emerge throughout the year, and low levels of larval drift between reaches. These patterns may be less likely in a northern hemisphere montane species with synchronous emergence of adults and high levels of drift. We tested the hypothesis that patterns of genetic variation in a montane mayfly from the Rocky Mountains, Colorado, would reflect a pattern of ‘isolation by distance’ with samples from the same creek being more similar than samples from different creeks and that deviations from Hardy–Weinberg proportions would be minimal. 2. Based on allozyme variation, the hypothesis of minimal deviations from Hardy–Weinberg proportions was not supported and there was no evidence of isolation by distance. Nevertheless the levels of differentiation among samples from within the same stream were less than those reported for most subtropical species. 3. Results from analysis of a fragment of the cytochrome oxidase gene (subunit 1) revealed contrasting patterns. The levels of genetic differentiation were an order of magnitude higher between streams than among samples within streams. In addition, although there was no significant isolation by distance effect overall, a nested clade analysis provided evidence for restricted gene flow with isolation by distance for some clades. 4. We suggest that these contrasting results may reflect the differences in male and female dispersal patterns. While differentiation at nuclear gene markers (allozymes) give information about both male and female dispersal, mitochondrial DNA markers reflect only female dispersal. We suggest that in this species, female dispersal may be more restricted, perhaps mostly along stream channels, whereas male dispersal is more widespread. An alternative explanation for the different results is the different evolutionary rates of the mitochondrial and nuclear markers.  相似文献

The life history of the burrowing mayfly Ephoron virgo (Olivier, 1791) (Ephemeroptera: Polymitarcyidae) was studied during spring and summer 2005 in the lower Ebro river (Catalonia) and compared to a previous study performed in 1987 (Ibáñez, Escosa, Muñoz and Prat 1991). The results showed an advancement of Ephoron virgo life cycle and an increase of production estimates. In 2005 larval development reached the maximum size one month earlier than in 1987, and adult emergence peak began three weeks earlier. Comparing adult sex ratios (F:M), there was a major presence of females in 2005 (1:4), while the opposite was observed in 1987 (2:1). Secondary production was higher in 2005 than in 1987, obtaining 950 mg dry weight/m2/year with the increment summation method and 1080 mg dry weight/m2/year using the removal summation method. Higher water temperatures were measured for the entire 2005 larval growth period, which were related to higher air temperatures. Therefore, that temperature increment was likely the main cause of changes observed in the Ephoron virgo life cycle.  相似文献

1. Winged stages of Ephoron shigae were collected every day during their emergence period during a 6-year period from 1989 to 1994, by net sweeps or a light trap along the Asahi-gawa River in western Japan. Emergence occurred mainly in September. 2. Coefficients of determination (r2) were calculated for the regression of the mean date of emergence against cumulative degree-days during various periods from late March to early September. 3. In both sexes the highest values of r2 were obtained for regression with degree-days from late June to late August. This indicates that thermal conditions during the late instars affected the emergence timing most strongly. The timing of emergence can be well predicted from the cumulative degree-days during summer.  相似文献

We describe the isolation of ten polymorphic microsatellite loci from the mayfly Ameletus inopinatus. Loci had di‐ or trinucleotide repeat motifs and were highly variable with three to 17 alleles (mean = 7.15). Observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.143 to 0.905. One locus (Ami_202) showed significant deviation from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium in one population, but no evidence for null alleles. One locus (Ami_73) was significantly linked with three other loci. The remaining nine loci should prove highly informative for population genetic studies.  相似文献

In the geographically parthenogenetic mayfly, Ephoron shigae, egg maturation and counts of chromosome number of unfertilized, parthenogenetic eggs were studied, in comparison with fertilized eggs from a bisexual population. The primary oocyte becomes mature through two successive maturation divisions. The first maturation division (meiotic division) takes place in the primary oocyte to produce a secondary oocyte and a first polar body. The second maturation division soon occurs in the secondary oocyte, in which the nucleus is divided into a mature egg nucleus (female pronucleus) and second polar body nuclei. The first polar body, in some cases, was successively divided into two polar bodies; in other instances, it was not divided. After the successive maturation division, the egg nucleus and the sister second polar body nucleus drew near to fuse into the zygote nucleus. The chromosome number was doubled in the zygote, and this conjugation initiates subsequent embryonic development. This suggests that, in E. shigae, the process of parthenogenetic recovery of diploidy is the automictic type categorized as the ‘terminal fusion’ pattern. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 99 , 335–343.  相似文献

Caenis robusta Etn. was found in only 8 of 107 water bodies sampled. All the habitats from which it was recorded contained plant debris; the waters were still or slow-flowing and had conductivities ranging from 120–687 µmhos cm–1 at 25°C.In North Shropshire, England, C. robusta had one generation per year. Newly hatched nymphs were abundant in August and growth occurred rapidly until September. No growth took place from October until March but was again rapid from April until June. Emergence took place at dusk in late June and July.  相似文献

The vegetative morphology and life history of Halopteris filicina (Grateloup) Kutzing, collected from Korea, were examined in laboratory culture. Field plants attaining 3–5 cm in height were epilithic, tufted, yellowish-brown, and produced numerous erect axes with alternately distichous branches from compact basal discs. They were cultured under a 12:12 h LD photoperiod at 10°-C, 15°C and 20°C to observe the influence of temperature on reproduction. At 10°C plants grew only vegetatively, whereas at 15°C and 20°C they produced unilocular sporangia. Unispores released from sporangia developed into monoecious, anisogamous gametophytes that formed plurilocular female and male gametangia on the same lateral branches. The zygotes, by fusion of female macrogametes and male microgametes, developed into sporophytes bearing unilocular sporangia, whereas the unfused female gametes germinated parthenogenetically. This species was confirmed to have an isomorphic life history, basically similar to the other species of Sphacelariales.  相似文献

The burrowing polymitarcyid mayfly Ephoron shigae is a geographically parthenogenetic species. Interestingly, the distributions of the bisexual and unisexual populations overlap broadly in their respective geographic ranges. In this mayfly, obligatory diploid thelytoky appears within unisexual populations. In the present study, we examined the potential for parthenogenesis or the parthenogenetic ability of females in a bisexual population aiming to understand the emergence of unisexual populations. The results obtained revealed that females in the examined bisexual populations showed a potential for diploid thelytoky as also seen in the unisexual populations, although, in females from bisexual populations, the development success rates of their unfertilized eggs were considerably lower than those of virgin females from unisexual populations. In the three bisexual reproducing species (Ephemera japonica, Ephemera strigata, and Ephemera orientalis) in the closely‐related family Ephemeridae, diploid thelytoky (i.e. tychoparthenogenesis; < 3%) was also observed. However, in this case, the parthenogenetic development success rates of unfertilized eggs were significantly lower than those of virgin females in the bisexual (Hino‐yosui Irrigation Canal) population of E. shigae. Accordingly, we suggest that parthenogenetic ability (i.e. tychoparthenogenesis or facultative parthenogenesis) in bisexual populations of E. shigae may facilitate the evolutionary transition to unisexual populations with fully obligatory parthenogenesis. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 99 , 326–334.  相似文献
