Data on the reproductive behavior of DBA/2J Ten mice, collected from October 1970 through March 1973 and utilizing a 2-female, 1-male breeding system, with the mice remaining together throughout their reproductive life indicates: a) Litter size tends to increase through the fourth litter, the first litter being much smaller than successive litters; b) Survival rates of litters with 2--4 pups increase with successive deliveries; c) Survival rates of litters with 5--9 pups are approximately the same regardless of parity; d) There is a circannual rhythm in the number of pups available for weaning da 21, which is attributable to changes in postnatal viability. Data collected using a breeding pen system, with isolation of females pre- and post-delivery (March 1973 to March 1974) indicates: a) There is a reduction in live litter sizes in later litters with this system; b) There is a large reduction in the proportion of pups surviving to weaning with this system when compared with the other breeding system.  相似文献

1. The aestival heat budgets of two large limnetic enclosures within a small lake in the English Lake District were studied. During summer, these enclosures had different nutrient supplies and consequently different phytoplankton populations. 2. As initial temperature profiles were similar and the incoming surface heat and momentum fluxes for the two enclosures were identical, subsequent changes in the heat budget were assumed to be induced by the biological differences between the enclosures. The proposed mechanism is an increased surface absorption of solar radiation leading to extra surface warming and a consequent excess loss of heat to the atmosphere through long‐wave emittance and sensible and latent heat fluxes, conservatively estimated to be of the order of 10–30 W m?2. 3. Theoretical calculations show that potential effects on a heat budget could be considerably larger than those observed here. The inherent non‐linearity of the heat fluxes implies that such effects will be more important in warmer lakes than in colder ones. 4. Thermocline depth and strength were also altered by the response to differences in phytoplankton. 5. Any changes in climate or in nutrient loading from the catchment which substantially affect abundance or timing of phytoplankton populations in a lake will consequently also change the thermal structure of the lake.  相似文献

The seasonal distribution of Caulobacter spp. has been determined in the water column of two mesotrophic lakes using most probable number (MPN) viable counting techniques from April, 1972 to March, 1973. Concentrations in Lake Washington, a monomictic lake, peaked at 1000–3300 per ml in the epilimnion during the late spring and summer and reached lows in October of less than 2 per ml prior to fall turnover. The reason for the decrease in viable numbers is not known. Caulobacter spp. began to increase gradually in December, during the winter mixing period well before the spring bloom. Concentrations in Hall Lake, a small kettle lake, were somewhat higher than in Lake Washington, ranging from 0.27 per ml in October to over 5000 per ml during May. In contrast to Lake Washington, the highest populations were found in the metalimnion and upper hypolimnion of Hall Lake. Caulobacter spp. were also found in the anaerobic depths of the hypolimnion. However, these did not grow anaerobically, suggesting that they had settled into the hypolimnion and survived in the cold anaerobic zone. The populations of Caulobacter spp. reached maximum numbers at the approximate times and depths at which algal biomass would be expected to be greatest.  相似文献

Synopsis Effects of environmental factors on the distribution and abundance of yellow perch and central mudminnows in northern Wisconsin were examined by holding populations of these fishes within single-species enclosures in a series of three small forest lakes having a species-richness gradient of one to four species. These enclosures allowed each species to experience environmental conditions within each lake without directly interacting with each other. In the four-species lake, two other sets of enclosures addressed the effects of intra- and interspecific competition. Changes in total biomass of enclosure stocks (from growth and mortality) indicated that in the absence of other species, perch did best in the lake containing the richest fish assemblage, intermediate in the two-species lake, and worst in the mudminnow-only lake. Mudminnow stocks similarly performed significantly better in the four-species lake than the mudminnow-only lake. These results suggest that the lakes' environmental conditions contribute to the patterns of presence and abundance of perch, but that interspecific interactions override a similar contribution for the mudminnow, which is regarded as a fugitive species. Perch performances were also sensitive to fish densities within enclosures, declining significantly when stocks were doubled, either by adding more perch or equal numbers of mudminnows.  相似文献

Eutrophication and its control by biomanipulation: an enclosure experiment   总被引:4,自引:1,他引:3  
Biomanipulation experiments were carried out in small enclosures in a small, shallow eutrophic lake in eastern England. The effects of fish removal on water quality and planktonic communities were examined in relation to nutrients and macrophytes. Exclusion of fish resulted in enhanced densities of the large-bodied Daphnia hyalina which, in turn, led to improvements in water quality. The provision of refuges from fish predation also enhanced Daphnia populations enough to suggest this strategy as feasible for the restoration of this lake. The development of a mysid population in enclosures without fish indicated that some indirect effects might occur if fish are completely removed.  相似文献

Summary A lake population of Daphnia, and several subpopulations in large plastic enclosures within the lake and manipulated with respect to population densities and nutrient enrichment (acetate, nitrate, phosphate), exhibited differences among genotypic frequencies at the phosphoglucoisomerase locus. The lake and control populations exhibited similar genotypic frequencies which were significantly different from those found in the three manipulated populations. The similarity of the genetic reaction in the manipulated populations may be related to similarity of manipulation. All populations exhibited deviations from Hardy-Weinberg proportions in the form of heterozygote excess.  相似文献

The collection of eggs of Chelonia mydas from beaches on Ascension Island and elsewhere for hatching at the Mariculture Ltd farm on Grand Cayman was described in a previous paper (Simon, 1975). Improved organization of these collections has made it possible to record many incidental observations which throw light on the nesting behaviour and performance of the female Chelonia , and Ascension Island, because of its small size, numerous beaches and good communications, proved to be particularly favourable for such research. The present paper records observations made in February and March 1973 and 1974. The second author has contributed only by the analysis of the data and the preparation of the paper.  相似文献

The effects of planktivorous and benthivorous fish on benthic fauna, zooplankton, phytoplankton and water chemistry were studied experimentally in two eutrophic Swedish lakes using cylindrical enclosures. In enclosures in both lakes, dense fish populations resulted in low numbers of benthic fauna and planktonic cladocerans, high concentration of chlorophyll, blooms of blue-green, algae, high pH and low transparency. In the soft-water Lake Trummen, total phosporus increased in the enclosure with fish, but in the hard-water Lake Bysjön total phosphorus decreased simultaneously with precipitation of calcium carbonate. Enclosures without fish had a higher abundance of benthic fauna and large planktonic cladocerans, lower phytoplankton biomass, lower pH and higher transparency.The changes in enclosures with fish can be described as eutrophication, and those in enclosures without fish as oligotrophication. The possibility of regulation of fish populations as a lake restoration method is discussed.This paper was presented at the XXth SIL Congress in Copenhagen in 1977.  相似文献

利用富营养浅水湖泊武汉东湖中所建立的大型实验围隔系统,对沉水植物的水质净化作用作了现场实验研究。重建后的沉水植物可以显著改善水质,水体透明度显著提高,水色降低。在研究期间,水生植物围隔CODcr和BOD5一般分别为20和5mg/L左右;对照围隔和大湖水体则分别约为40和10mg/L。水生植物围隔水体中检出的有机污染种类也较对照围和大湖水体柢。实验结果表明恢复以沉水植物为主的水生植被是改善营养湖泊水质和重建生态系统的有效措施。  相似文献

在严重富营养化的东湖设置大型围隔(20×29m)两个,并在其中引种沉水植物—菹草(PotamogetoncrispusL.),探讨了菹草的恢复对水体富营养化的影响。菹草的恢复,使两个大型围隔中的各种营养盐水平都显著地低于围隔外围的湖水(P<0.01),溶解氧和透明度显著升高,电导率明显下降,即水质得到了明显的改善。又将其中一个围隔中已恢复的菹草全部收割并移出,在一个多月的期间,未被收割的围隔内水体中各种营养盐浓度比已收割围隔稍低,但未能达到统计学上的显著差异(P>0.6),对水体浮游植物叶绿素a浓度也没有显著影响。即在短期(一个月左右)未使水质明显恶化。  相似文献

We collected zooplankton samples from 4×4 m enclosures located in two acidified lakes (pH<5) in Nova Scotia from June to August 1996. One lake had mean dissolved organic carbon concentrations greater than 10 mg l–1 (brown water), while the other had values between 2 and 4 mg l–1. In each lake, three enclosures were open to ambient light, while three were covered by Mylar® sheets which removed UVB and UVC wavelengths. Weekly sampling was done at all sites in July and near the end of August. Individuals were identified and the total community weighed. Analysis of results using both t-test and canonical analysis revealed small differences in populations between open and UVB covered clearwater sites in early July, but not later. There was no response of midsummer zooplankton communities in the humic lake which had a 95% extinction depth of 3 cm. In the clearwater lake (95% UVB extinction at 50 cm), the effect of radiation exclusion was relatively weak compared to most other published studies, but nevertheless statistically significant.  相似文献

We studied overwintering in the bank vole Clethrionomys glareolus in four 0.5 ha enclosures in an abandoned field in central Finland in the winter 1987/88. In two of the enclosures food was offered evenly distributed over the whole enclosed area (Even Enclosures = EE), in the two others food was offered in one feeding patch with four feeding chambers 2 m apart (Patchy Enclosures = PE). Food was provided in about the same amount in both enclosures. The experiment commenced in early October, with 13 females and 11 males in EEs and 12 + 13 voles in PEs. After two months the voles in the PEs were concentrated around the feeding patches. Territoriality was not observed in EEs, instead the voles formed small exclusive overwintering groups consisting of 2-3 females and at least one male. The size of the home range of the females and males was identical during mid-winter as the voles were non-breeding. By the onset of breeding, range size increased in both sexes, but significantly more in males, however. The survival was about the same in all populations. Every population showed a mid-winter decline suggesting the effect of the mustelid predators observed in and around the enclosures. In the PEs the overwintering aggregations lasted until the maturation of the first litters. Food distribution affected the spatial distribution of the populations. We conclude that the patchiness of the habitat and especially the availability of food are the most important factors determining the social structure of overwintering populations.  相似文献

Results of a mark-release study of Rattus sordidus colletti (Gould) on sub-coastal, treeless plains in the monsoonal north of the Northern Territory of Australia are given for 5 years. R. s. colletti is the dominant component of the small mammal fauna of these plains, with only small numbers of Melomys spp. and Planigale maculata also occurring. Two classes of peak densities were observed. Localized peaks resulted from non-breeding adult R. s. colletti refuging onto the marginally higher levees during flooding of the plains, and also from refuging into a lower-lying area at the end of a dry-season drought. Generalized peak densities resulted from peaks in reproductive effort. In 1972 and 1974, reproduction was confined to the period immediately following the monsoons, but in 1973 breeding continued throughout the dry season, following unseasonal rain in June. Thus, generalized peak densities were observed in one year at the beginning of the dry season, and in another at its end. The relatively shallower flooding and mildness of the 1972–3 wet season resulted in commencement of breeding earlier in 1973 than in 1974, while rapid severe flooding of the plains in December 1974 resulted in mass mortality and failure of the refuging populations of adults to recolonize the lower plains in 1975. R. s. colletti remained extremely rare until November 1976, when the study was terminated. The good conditions which allowed reproduction during the dry season of 1973 were reflected in rapid growth rates at that time, compared with rates approaching zero in the 1974 dry season. R. s. colletti is the most fecund form of Australian Rattus species. This high fecundity appears to compensate for the restriction, by dry-season aridity and wet-season flooding, of the breeding season in most years to a short period immediately following the monsoons. In unusual years with rainfall during the dry season, the high fecundity gives R. s. colletti populations the capacity to reach very high densities.  相似文献

Located at 1197 m in the Massif Central Français, lake Pavin has a volcanic origin. It is a dimictic and meromictic lake of 44 ha of area and 92 m depth. Samples were collected bimonthly at 8 depth (0 to 40 m) from May 1973 to April 1974. Physicochemical parameters (light energy, temperature, pH, conductivity, Oxygen, Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Silice, Carbon) and dynamics of phytoplanktonic populations (cells counts, standing crop, primary production, photosynthetic pigments) were studied.The waters of this lake are clear, with low conductivity and high concentrations of oxygen in the first 40 meters. In a water column, 0–40 meters, the means of nitrogen concentrations are between 45 and 279 µg/l and between 0 and 161 µg/l for phosphorus. Phytoplankton is caracterised by an important development of Diatoms (Melosira italica subsp. subarctica and Asterionella formosa) in winter and spring, opposed to low standing crops of Chlorophycea (Coenococcus, Sphaerocystis, Chlamydomonas) in summer. The annual mean of primary production is about 360 mg C ass./m2.J. The highes values of the activity coefficient (P/B) are found during the development of Chlorophycea, but photosynthetic efficiency is maximum in winter for Diatom populations.To summarize physico-chemical parameters and phytoplankton relationships, a synthetical mathematical model was made by Principal Components Analysis.

The number, size and reproductive potential of the planktic Crustacea were compared from March to December 1973 in two Newfoundland lakes, namely Hogans Pond and Bauline Long Pond. In the first period of the study the total number of microcrustaceans was greater in the more fertile Hogans Pond, but after October all species in Hogans Pond declined catastrophically. The relative numbers of individual species are detailed, some being more abundant in one lake and some in the other. Body lengths of most copepods were the same or greater in Hogans Pond than in Bauline Long Pond, but the cladoceran Daphnia catawba was larger in Bauline Long Pond. The number of eggs carried per female was usually the same or greater in Hogans Pond, except for Diaptomus minutus and Daphnia catawba in the spring.  相似文献

The influence of added nutrients nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon on the phytoplankton of a small recreational reservoir in central Arizona was investigated during the summer, 1974. Polyethylene bags were used to isolate lake water and the natural populations for the addition of nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon individually and in combination. A large increase in phytoplankton numbers, extractable chlorophyll, pH and dissolved oxygen occurred only in bags to which both nitrogen and phosphorus were added, suggesting that both nitrogen and phosphorus levels were limiting to the primary producers. Little alteration in species composition resulted from the addition of the above nutrients.  相似文献

Weekly observations were made at the Thames Water Authority's Farmoor reservoir during the development of the spring bloom of phytoplankters from November 1973 to March 1974. Counts were made of the phytoplankters, their fungal parasites and the zooplankters. Analyses were made of those chemical parameters which it was thought might exert an influence on phytoplankton growth. Physical and meteorological measurements were also made. The development and decline of four phytoplankton populations were observed. The growth of Asterionella formosa Hass. was interrupted in December when 43·5% of the cells were parastiized by Zygorhizidium affluens Canter. Stephanodiscus astraea (Ehr.) Grün. and Stephanodiscus hantzschii Grün. were not similarly affected. All three diatoms were apparently limited finally by silica depletion. The desmid, Closterium peracerosum Gay. became 66% parasitized by an undescribed chytrid and declined rapidly. Light, turbulence, zooplankton grazing and nutrients other than silica appeared to be unimportant.  相似文献

Summary We began this experiment to test specific hypotheses regarding direct and indirect effects of fish predation on the littoral macroinvertebrate community of Bays Mountain Lake, Tennessee. We used 24 m2 enclosures in which we manipulated the presence and absence of large redear sunfish (Lepomis microlophus>150 mm SL), and small sunfish (L. macrochirus and L. microlophus <50 mm SL) over a 16-mo period. Here we report on effects of fish predation on gastropod grazers that appear to cascade to periphyton and macrophytes.Both large redear sunfish and small sunfish maintained low snail biomass, but snails in fish-free controls increased significantly during the first 2-mo of the experiment. By late summer of the first year of the experiment, the difference in biomass between enclosures with and without fish had increased dramatically (>10×). Midway through the second summer of the experiment, we noted apparent differences in the abundance of periphyton between enclosures containing fish and those that did not. We also noted differences in the macrophyte distribution among enclosures. To document these responses, we estimated periphyton cover, biovolume and cell size frequencies as well as macrophyte distributions among enclosures at the end of the experiment. When fish were absent, periphyton percent cover was significantly reduced compared to when fish were present. Periphyton cell-size distributions in enclosures without fish were skewed toward small cells (only 12% were greater than 200 m3), which is consistent with intense snail grazing. The macrophyte Najas flexilis had more than 60 x higher biomass in the fish-free enclosures than in enclosures containing fish; Potamogeton diversifolius was found only in fish-free enclosures. These results suggest a chain of strong interactions (i.e. from fish to snails to periphyton to macrophytes) that may be important in lake littoral systems. This contrasts sharply with earlier predictions based on cascading trophic interactions that propose that fish predation on snails would enhance macrophyte biomass.  相似文献

Nothofagus nervosa is one of the most important species of the temperate forests of southern South America. On the eastern slope of the Andes Mountains (Argentina) it has a very small and narrow natural distribution area which follows the valleys of the numerous west-east lake basins. Re-colonisation after the last glaciation is assumed to have originated from refugia located in the western pacific coast or even in free interglacial patches of the Andes Mountains. Sixteen pairs of primers were used to amplify 16 non-coding regions of chloroplast DNA in 11 populations from over the entire distribution area in Argentina. After restriction analysis two polymorphic fragments were found which defined two haplotypes and allowed a differentiation among populations. A clear geographic divide occurs separating populations distributed south and north of a west-east mountain chain. This suggests that after the last glaciation the species spread out from at least two different refugia. Hypotheses about the possible location of these refugia are discussed. 在滇池沿岸的池塘中 ,构建了面积为 10 0m2 ,水深为 85cm ,底质均为淤泥的四个围隔 ,其中在三个围隔内分别放养密度为 10 0g/m3 、75g/m3 、5 0g/m3 的鲢。它们均在一定程度上控制浮游植物的生物量并改善水体透明度 ,其中初始放养鲢 75g/m3 的围隔控制效果最明显。放养三种密度的鲢在有效控制微囊藻水华的同时 ,原先水体的优势种类发生质的变化 ,水体中浮游植物的多样性也明显增加。放鱼 2个月后 ,在生物操纵的围隔中同时种入菹草 ,在75g/m3 的鲢控藻的围隔中 ,菹草长势良好 ,浮游动物大量出现 ,透明度进一步增加  相似文献
