We found that the majority of ballistic seeds tested [N = 74 of 78 in Vicia sativa ssp. nigra (Fabaceae); N = 25 of 27 in Croton capitatus var. capitatus (Euphorbiaceae)] were projected at angles that would yield a greater distance than the average of seeds with the same initial speed projected at random angles. In addition, the median of fractional distance error (maximum distance - seed distance)/(maximum distance), of the seeds were 0.11 and 0.04 for V. sativa and C. capitatus, respectively. Seed projection distance was modeled by using initial projection angle, initial speed, and measured drag, along with other seed data. We improved upon previous such studies by using dual-angle high-speed stroboscopic photography to determine initial projection angle and speed. We also measured seed drag in a low-turbulence wind tunnel. Seed projection positions on the plant, which also affect seed projection distance, were found to be primarily from the top of the plant, with 98 of 137 and 407 of 407 fruits in the upper half of the plant for V. sativa and C. capitatus, respectively. Our findings are significant because they suggest that in addition to the ballistic projection mechanism itself, the species studied have additional adaptations that result in enhanced seed projection distance from the parent plant.  相似文献

  • 1 We investigated, over the course of 2 years, the spatial distribution and abundance of two species of aphid, Metopolophium dirhodum and Sitobion avenae, and predatory species of carabid. This was undertaken in 24 wheat fields in ‘coarse‐grain’ and ‘fine‐grain’ landscapes in western France. A greater percentage of the latter landscape was covered by hedgerows and grassland and the total area covered by fields and the average size of the fields were smaller.
  • 2 The effects on aphid abundance of the distance from field margins, the presence of grassy strips and carabid abundance were determined in both landscapes.
  • 3 Both aphid species were more abundant in the ‘fine‐grain’ landscape, which may have been a result of the higher density of semi‐natural elements. In both types of landscape, the total numbers of aphids were negatively correlated with the distance from the field margin. This may have been because aphids were dispersing from overwintering sites in field margins. The abundance of M. dirhodum was strongly negatively correlated with the presence of grassy strips in the ‘coarse‐grain’ landscape, although there were no such significant correlations for either of the aphid species in the ‘fine‐grain’ landscape.

Ecological study plots are usually treated as if they are flat. This does not hold for many situations such as mountains where topography is complex. In areas with complex topography individual relationships are not only determined by projection distance, but also by surface distance. To demonstrate this we compared projection and surface distances by analyzing spatial genetic autocorrelation for Castanopsis chinensis in two subplots (A and B) in the Dinghushan (DHS) national nature reserve in subtropical South China. We observed that the two types of distances generally result in similar fine‐scale spatial genetic structure (SGS) patterning for the spatially less structured subplot B, but not for the highly structured subplot A. The present study shows clearly that accounting for plot architecture in plant species on topographically complex areas enables a more accurate picture of the underlying spatial genetic structure to emerge.  相似文献

Summary Half distance values for electron microscopic (EM) radioautographs with the isotopes3H and125I were determined using Ilford L4 emulsion processed with either fine grain, solution physical development, or filamentous grain, chemical development with D-19b.3H- and125I-line sources, obtained by cutting perpendicular sections from sections of3H-labeled methacrylate or125I-labeled thyroid glands, were processed for EM radioautography. The distribution of silver grains around a line source was determined by measuring their distance from the source in photographs of EM radioautographs. The number of silver grains per unit distance from the line source was plotted on graphs and half distance values were calculated. With solution physical development, the half distance value was 76 nm for3H and 80 nm for125I; whereas with D-19 b development it was 187 nm for3H and 157 nm for125I. Since solution physical development produced a reduction of about 50% in the half distance values for both isotopes, it is concluded that the production of fine grain by this method provides better resolution for EM radioautography than filamentous grain development with D-19 b. A photoelectric device is described for in vitro semicontinuous contact-free measurement of vascular dynamic strain. The vessel's optical image is projected onto a pair of linear photodiode arrays by use of a projection lens and a set of mirrors. Each array's video signal indicates a focused image of the vessel edge as a steep change of the light intensity. Edge location is defined as the midpoint of the intensity drop across the edge. Knowing the interdiode distance (16 micron), the location of the edge can be determined by counting the number of diodes up to the midpoint. Given both edge locations and the distance between arrays, diameter can be electronically computed. The output voltage is calibrated with a metric grid in place of the vessel and is linearly related to diameter. Resolution varies with magnification and may be on the order of 1 micron, depending on the strain amplitude and the initial unstressed vessel caliber. Frequency response is determined by the array scanning rate and is uniform well beyond the range of physiological considerations.  相似文献

通过1992—1978年的调查试验, 初步明确了以下事实:本地越冬的麦长管蚜尚未羽化, 田间已出现有翘成蚜;小麦苗期发现了穗期才能产生的穗型蚜;在冰冻期的高山上多次捕到有翅麦蚜;有翅成蚜大范围的“同期突发”现象;外来麦蚜占春季田间有翅蚜的98.8%以上.首次提出, 在有本地蚜源的情况下, 存在外来蚜源, 且外来蚜源可以成为春季田间麦长管蚜群的主体.本文分析讨论了迁入蚜源的可能基地和须进一步研究的问题.  相似文献

We explore the influence of spatial grain size, dispersal ability, and geographic distance on the patterns of species dissimilarity of terrestrial vertebrates, separating the dissimilarity explained by species replacement (turnover) from that resulting from richness differences. With data for 905 species of terrestrial vertebrates distributed in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, classified into five groups according to their taxonomy and dispersal ability, we calculated total dissimilarity and its additive partitioning as two components: dissimilarity derived from turnover and dissimilarity derived from richness differences. These indices were compared using fine (10 x 10 km), intermediate (20 x 20 km) and coarse (40 x 40 km) grain grids, and were tested for any correlations with geographic distance. The results showed that total dissimilarity is high for the terrestrial vertebrates in this region. Total dissimilarity, and dissimilarity due to turnover are correlated with geographic distance, and the patterns are clearer when the grain is fine, which is consistent with the distance-decay pattern of similarity. For all terrestrial vertebrates tested on the Isthmus of Tehuantepec both the dissimilarity derived from turnover and the dissimilarity resulting from richness differences make important contributions to total dissimilarity, and dispersal ability does not seem to influence the dissimilarity patterns. These findings support the idea that conservation efforts in this region require a system of interconnected protected areas that embrace the environmental, climatic and biogeographic heterogeneity of the area.  相似文献

How we manage to reconstruct the three-dimensional character of the world from the two-dimensional representations on our retinae has been a lively subject of research in the last ten or fifteen years. One principle that has emerged unifying many of these ideas is the need for constraints to allow the visual system to interpret the images it receives as three-dimensional. These constraints come from assumptions about the nature of the situation that produced the image. We have looked at how gravity can be used as a constraint in the case of a free fall trajectory projected onto an image plane by central projection. We have examined several possible methods for deriving the initial conditions of the trajectory from the two-dimensional projection, and examined their behavior under noisy and noiseless conditions, using both image simulations and videotapes of a real ball. We show that there are several ways to robustly compute the initial conditions of the parabolic trajectory from the image data in the presence of noise.  相似文献

Selection of particle images from electron micrographs presents a bottleneck in determining the structures of macromolecular assemblies by single particle electron cryomicroscopy (cryo-EM). The problem is particularly important when an experimentalist wants to improve the resolution of a 3D map by increasing by tens or hundreds of thousands of images the size of the dataset used for calculating the map. Although several existing methods for automatic particle image selection work well for large protein complexes that produce high-contrast images, it is well known in the cryo-EM community that small complexes that give low-contrast images are often refractory to existing automated particle image selection schemes. Here we develop a method for partially-automated particle image selection when an initial 3D map of the protein under investigation is already available. Candidate particle images are selected from micrographs by template matching with template images derived from projections of the existing 3D map. The candidate particle images are then used to train a support vector machine, which classifies the candidates as particle images or non-particle images. In a final step in the analysis, the selected particle images are subjected to projection matching against the initial 3D map, with the correlation coefficient between the particle image and the best matching map projection used to assess the reliability of the particle image. We show that this approach is able to rapidly select particle images from micrographs of a rotary ATPase, a type of membrane protein complex involved in many aspects of biology.  相似文献

Three-dimensional reconstruction of large macromolecules like viruses at resolutions below 10 A requires a large set of projection images. Several automatic and semi-automatic particle detection algorithms have been developed along the years. Here we present a general technique designed to automatically identify the projection images of particles. The method is based on Markov random field modelling of the projected images and involves a pre-processing of electron micrographs followed by image segmentation and post-processing. The image is modelled as a coupling of two fields--a Markovian and a non-Markovian. The Markovian field represents the segmented image. The micrograph is the non-Markovian field. The image segmentation step involves an estimation of coupling parameters and the maximum á posteriori estimate of the realization of the Markovian field i.e, segmented image. Unlike most current methods, no bootstrapping with an initial selection of particles is required.  相似文献

MOTIVATION: We reformulate the problem of comparing mass-spectra by mapping spectra to a vector space model. Our search method leverages a metric space indexing algorithm to produce an initial candidate set, which can be followed by any fine ranking scheme. RESULTS: We consider three distance measures integrated into a multi-vantage point index structure. Of these, a semi-metric fuzzy-cosine distance using peptide precursor mass constraints performs the best. The index acts as a coarse, lossless filter with respect to the SEQUEST and ProFound scoring schemes, reducing the number of distance computations and returned candidates for fine filtering to about 0.5% and 0.02% of the database respectively. The fuzzy cosine distance term improves specificity over a peptide precursor mass filter, reducing the number of returned candidates by an order of magnitude. Run time measurements suggest proportional speedups in overall search times. Using an implementation of ProFound's Bayesian score as an example of a fine filter on a test set of Escherichia coli protein fragmentation spectra, the top results of our sample system are consistent with that of SEQUEST.  相似文献

The projection apparatus is placed on the floor and tilted upward at an angle of about 30° so that the image is formed on a sheet of rigid, transparent plastic. This sheet is supported by a frame held between two tables and aligned so that it is perpendicular to the axis of the projection beam. The paper for tracing the image is placed on the side of the plastic sheet opposite the projection apparatus. Thus, the operator is able to make the tracing of the image without annoyance by heat from the light source or encumbrance from shadows of the hand and pencil cast on the image.  相似文献

Aim The scale dependence of many ecological patterns and processes implies that general inference is reliant on obtaining scale‐response curves over a large range of grains. Although environmental correlates of richness have been widely studied, comparisons among groups have usually been applied at single grains. Moreover, the relevance of environment–richness associations to fine‐grain assemblages has remained surprisingly unclear. We present a first global cross‐scale assessment of environment–richness associations for birds, mammals and amphibians from 2000 km down to c. 20 km. Location World‐wide. Methods We performed an extensive survey of the literature for well‐sampled terrestrial vertebrate inventories over clearly defined small extents. Coarser grain richness was estimated from the intersection of extent‐of‐occurrence range maps with concentric equal‐distance circles around fine‐grain assemblage location centroids. General linear and simultaneous autoregressive models were used to relate richness at the different grains to environmental correlates. Results The ability of environmental variables to explain species richness decreases markedly toward finer grains and is lowest for fine‐grained assemblages. A prominent transition in importance occurs between productivity and temperature at increased grains, which is consistent with the role of energy affecting regional, but not local, richness. Variation in fine‐grained predictability across groups is associated with their purported grain of space use, i.e. highest for amphibians and narrow‐ranged and small‐bodied species. Main conclusions We extend the global documentation of environment–richness associations to fine‐grained assemblages. The relationship between fine‐grained predictability of a group and its ecological characteristics lends empirical support to the idea that variation in species fine‐grained space use may scale up to explain coarse‐grained diversity patterns. Our study exposes a dramatic and taxonomically variable scale dependence of environment–richness associations and suggests that environmental correlates of richness may hold limited information at the level of communities.  相似文献

The local exchange model developed by McNair et al. (1997) provides a stochastic diffusion approximation to the random-like motion of fine particles suspended in turbulent water. Based on this model, McNair (2000) derived equations governing the probability distribution and moments of the hitting time, which is the time until a particle hits the bottom for the first time from a given initial elevation. In the present paper, we derive the corresponding equations for the probability distribution and moments of the hitting distance, which is the longitudinal distance a particle has traveled when it hits the bottom for the first time. We study the dependence of the distribution and moments on a particle's initial elevation and on two dimensionless parameters: an inverse Reynolds number M (a measure of the importance of viscous mixing compared to turbulent mixing of water) and the Rouse number ?(a measure of the importance of deterministic gravitational sinking compared to stochastic turbulent mixing in governing the vertical motion of a particle). We also compute predicted hitting-distance distributions for two published data sets. The results show that for fine particles suspended in moderately to highly turbulent water, the hitting-distance distribution is strongly skewed to the right, with mode相似文献

The male germ cells of angiosperm plants are neither free-living nor flagellated and therefore are dependent on the unique structure of the pollen grain for fertilization. During angiosperm male gametogenesis, an asymmetric mitotic division produces the generative cell, which is completely enclosed within the cytoplasm of the larger pollen grain vegetative cell. Mitotic division of the generative cell generates two sperm cells that remain connected by a common extracellular matrix with potential intercellular connections. In addition, one sperm cell has a cytoplasmic projection in contact with the vegetative cell nucleus. The shared extracellular matrix of the two sperm cells and the physical association of one sperm cell to the vegetative cell nucleus forms a linkage of all the genetic material in the pollen grain, termed the male germ unit. Found in species representing both the monocot and eudicot lineages, the cytoplasmic projection is formed by vesicle formation and microtubule elongation shortly after the formation of the generative cell and tethers the male germ unit until just prior to fertilization. The cytoplasmic projection plays a structural role in linking the male germ unit, but potentially plays other important roles. Recently, it has been speculated that the cytoplasmic projection and the male germ unit may facilitate communication between the somatic vegetative cell nucleus and the germinal sperm cells, via RNA and/or protein transport. This review focuses on the nature of the sperm cell cytoplasmic projection and the potential communicative function of the male germ unit.  相似文献

Electron diffraction and image data on the orthorhombic β polymorph of n-octadecanol are used to deduce its crystal structure. Intensity data from the (001) projection indicate the crystals to be less bent than many other microcrystalline long chain materials. This can be explained by infinite hydrogen bond chains in the polar region which bind monolayers together. Selective sublimation of the microcrystals along the crystallographic b axis in vacuo indicates the hydrogen bonds to run parallel to the long a-axis, as was also found in X-ray studies of the monoclinic γ-polymorph. The presence of electron diffraction reflections forbidden by O1 subcell symmetry does not indicate another β polymorph, as suggested by other workers, but is due to the well-characterized phenomenon of multiple elastic scattering from layered structures.  相似文献

The puroindoline genes (pinA and pinB) are believed to play critical roles in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) grain texture. Mutations in either gene are associated with hard wheat. No direct evidence exists for the ability of puroindolines to modify cereal grain texture. Interestingly, puroindolines appear to be absent in cereal species outside of the tribe Triticeae, in which the dominant form of grain texture is hard. To assess the ability of the puroindolines to modify cereal grain texture, the puroindolines were introduced into rice (Oryzae sativa L.) under the control of the maize ubiquitin promoter. Textural analysis of transgenic rice seeds indicated that expression of PINA and/or PINB reduced rice grain hardness. After milling, flour prepared from these softer seeds had reduced starch damage and an increased percentage of fine flour particles. Our data support the hypothesis that puroindolines play important roles in controlling wheat grain texture and may be useful in modifying grain texture of other cereals.  相似文献

Components made from shape memory alloys (SMAs) such as nitinol often fail from stress concentrations and defects such as notches and cracks. It is shown here for the first time that these failures can be predicted using the theory of critical distances (TCDs), a method which has previously been used to study fracture and fatigue in other materials. The TCD uses the stress at a certain distance ahead of the notch to predict the failure of the material due to the stress concentration. The critical distance is believed to be a material property which is related to the microstructure of the material. The TCD is simply applied to a linear model of the material without the need to model the complication of its non-linear behaviour. The non-linear behaviour of the material at fracture is represented in the critical stress. The effect of notches and short cracks on the fracture of SMA NiTi was studied by analysing experimental data from the literature. Using a finite element model with elastic material behaviour, it is shown that the TCD can predict the effect of crack length and notch geometry on the critical stress and stress intensity for fracture, with prediction errors of less than 5%. The value of the critical distance obtained for this material was L?=?90?μm; this may be related to its grain size. The effects of short cracks on stress intensity were studied. It was shown that the same value of the critical distance (L?=?90?μm) could estimate the experimental data for both notches and short cracks.  相似文献
