Species of Elachisina are marine and extend from the Caribbeanand western North and Central America to the Philippines, Hawaiiand New Zealand. The anatomy and other morphological featuresof Elachisina ( = Microdocluis) floridana (Rehder) from theFlorida Keys are described and compared with rissoacean familiesjudged to be most closely allied. This species has a uniquecombination of characters which do not correspond to those character-setsused to define any known rissoacean family. Important featuresinclude a metapodial as well as pallial tentacles, a wide ctenidiumwith low, triangular filaments, an osphradium which is shortrelative to the ctenidium, an S-shaped loop of the intestinewhich extends into the pallial roof, long dorsal folds in themidoesophagus, a rather loosely organised nervous system, anopen prostate gland from which the pallial vas deferens exitsat its anterior extremity, glandular lobes on the penis, a non-glandularfold on the right side of the ventral channel of the capsulegland and a fold on the left side in the posterior end of thechannel, a pair of seminal receptacles lying between the albumenand capsule glands, a bursa which lies alongside the capsulegland and opens posteriorly to the ventral channel and a U-shaped,expanded section of the oviduct proximal to the albumen glandand seminal receptacles. This combination of characters is consideredto be sufficiently distinct to arrant the erection of a newfamily-level taxon to accommodate the small group of speciesjudged to be congeneric with E. floridana. Body pigmentation is a popular taxonomic marker in slugs to discriminateclosely related species. However, the genetic background ofbody pigmentation is known only for a few species, while inmany others body pigmentation is influenced by age, food and/orclimate. In this study, we investigated the effects of differentfood items on body pigmentation expression in two selfing pulmonategastropods, Arion (Carinarion) silvaticus and Arion (Carinarion) fasciatus.Both species mainly differ in the distribution of yellow-orangegranules on the body, which in A. fasciatus are concentratedin lateral bands, and in A. silvaticus are evenly scattered.Animals were raised individually under the same conditions, whilethey laid eggs as a consequence of selfing. This F1 generation wasafterwards divided into two groups, which were fed with different fooditems. A diet of carrot, lettuce or paper had no effect on the distributionof the yellow-orange granules in A. silvaticus, but provokeda loss of the yellow-orange lateral bands in A. fasciatusso that externally these F1 specimens became similar to A. silvaticus.In both species, a diet of nettle resulted in a strong yellow-orangepigmentation, which often formed yellow-orange lateral bands.These results indicate that food can probably influence the'species-specific' body pigmentation in Carinarion, and thusquestion the reliability of colour traits to distinguish A.silvaticus and A. fasciatus. Although zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) have invaded watersacross Europe for over 200 years, they colonized Ireland onlywithin the past decade. To test the hypothesis that Irelandwas colonized by adult D. polymorpha, we examined mussels fromdifferent sites along the Lower Shannon River system in Irelandfor the presence of host specific and generalist endosymbionts.Withinthe mantle cavity and/or associated with zebra mussel tissueswe found species specific-ciliates (Conchophthirus acuminatusand Ophryoglena hemophaga) and generalist symbionts (the ciliateAncistrumina limnica, nematodes, oligochaetes and chironomids).We found a significant difference in the prevalence of symbiontsamong sites, but all mussels at all sites harboured one specialistspecies C. acuminatus, and all of the mussels at three of thefour sites also had the second specialist, O. hemophaga. Thus,with the introduction of D. polymorpha into Ireland, at leasttwo additional species, their host-specific symbionts C. acuminatusand O. hemophaga, have also been introduced. The presence ofthese symbionts in Ireland supports the hypothesis that adultzebra mussels were introduced into Ireland, rather than larvalstages. The structure of trichomes and stomata on leaflets of 21 speciesof the Mimosaceae are described. Non-glandular trichomes inMimosa pudica are of three types: unicellular, with a roundedthick-walled base and a terminal unicellular body, and multicellular.Capitate, clavate, or cylindric, 3–6-celled glandularhairs are observed on leaflets of Mimosa pudica only. Leafletsare amphistomatic in all species except Adenanthera pavonina,Calliandra sp., Parkia biglandulosa, Pithecellobium dulce, andSamanea saman in which they are hypostomatic. Only paracyticstomata are found in Leucaena leucocephala and Mimosa pudica.In the rest stomata are of more than one type. In spite of thediversity, the most frequent type in these species is paracytic.Anisocytic stomata, in all cases, are secondarily derived fromparacytic ones by transverse or oblique wall formation in asubsidiary cell. Similarly some stomata with one subsidiarycell are also secondary derivatives of the paracytic ones becauseof one of the subsidiary cells assuming the form of an epidermalcell. The development has been traced in 14 species and thatof paracytic stomata may be mesogenous or mesoperigenous, thatof stomata with one subsidiary cell mesogenous but anomocyticstomata are ontogenetically perigenous. Occasionally a meristernoidis cut off from one of the subsidiary cells of a paracytic stoma.The organization of a stoma from such a meristemoid has beentraced.  相似文献

The composition of some 1150 phosphate granules in the digestiveglands of over 40 species of marine prosobranch gastropods hasbeen surveyed using a simple preparation technique and semi-quantitativeSEM x-ray microanalysis. Spectral peaks for Mg, K, Ca, Mn, Feand Zn were compared to that of P. Four major types of phosphategranule can be recognised, each generally characteristic ofa taxonomic grouping: high Mg in archaeogastropods and littorinids,multiple metal in higher mesogastropods, and, in neogastropods,Mg-Ca in muricoideans and high Zn in buccinoideans. At leastone Conus species (C. ventricosus) has high-Mg granules. Somecauses of variation in granule composition are discussed: speculatively,it is suggested a palaeoenvironmental influence seems possible. Three species in the Littorina saxatilis complex (the ovoviviparousL. saxatilis and the two oviparous species L. arcana and L.nigrolineata) were screened for the products of up to 22 lociusing gel elec-trophoresis. Analysis of allele frequencies andderived genetic distances showed that, with rare exceptionsin L. saxatilis and L. arcana, conspecific populations clusteredtogether. Sympatric pairs of populations showed significantdifferentiation at many polymorphic loci. The results confirmedthe biological reality of the three taxa, and did not suggestthe existence of any previously unrecognized species. The anatomy of Cocculinella minutissima (Smith, 1904) and Osteopeltamirabilis Marshall, 1987 is described. Both species belong tothe Lepetelloidea and are closely related to Addisonia Dall,1882, the anatomy of which has been recently described by theauthor. Commonly derived (symapomorphic) characters of all threegenera are found especially in the genital system (hermaphrodites,tcstis and ovary separated, with separated ducts, open seminalgroove to the unmodified right cephalic tentacle), and in thealimentary tract (paired oesophageal glands). Distinct similaritiesin genital and excretory system (large right kidney isolated;hermaphrodites, separated gonads) with the Pseudococculinidae,Pyropeltidae and Lepetellidae justify a uniting superfamilyLepetelloidea, the anatomy of which is quite different fromthat of the Cocculinoidea (Cocculinidae and Bathy-sciadiidae) Osteopelta has retained certain primitive characters (rhipidoglossateradula, true stomach), but is specialized in having a snout-likehead, a concentrated cerebropedal ring, and secondary gill leaflets(vestigial gill in Cocculinella, distinct gill leaflets in Addisonia).Cocculinella and Addisonia share additional synapomorphic featuresof the posterior alimentary tract (reduction of stomach, intestineforms a large sac, midgut gland contains dark granules). Severalaut-apomorphies of each genus justify their status as distinctfamilies. The genus Tricolia(Phasianellidae) in the Eastern Atlantic andMediterranean is reviewed on the bases of radular morphology,shell characters and polychromatism. The taxa included within the T. pullus (L.) group are not clearlyseparable and are treated as geographical subspecies:T. pulluspullus (L.), T. pullus picta (da Costa), T. pullus azorica (Dautzenberg),T. pullus canarica Nordsieck. The case of T. tenuis (Michaud)is problematic since it is clearly separable from sympatricT. pullus pullus in most parts of the Mediterranean but transitionalto T. pullus picta, towards the Atlantic. Other taxa are considered as having specific status since theyare consistently separable when found in sympatric populations.These include T. speciosa (Muhlfeldt), T. miniata (Monterosato),T. tingitana n.sp., T. petiti (Craven), T. nordsiecki (Talavera)and T. algoidea (Pallary). 该文讨论我国光肩星天牛Anoplophoraglabrlpennis(Motschulsky)类群的外部形态和外生殖器的主要鉴别特征,寄主、地理分布、起源及其演化。光肩星天牛主要分布在山西吕梁山、太行山以东的广大平原地区,寄主广泛,主要有榆、复叶槭、杨、柳、五角枫等。黄斑星天牛主要分布在秦岭以北,山西吕粱山太行山以西的陕甘宁地区,向东已扩展到河南、河北;主要为害杨树,也为害柳、榆。四川星天牛主要分布于秦岭以南的西部地区,北限在陕西太白山到甘肃天水一带;主要为害柳。在秦岭以北到天水之间是黄斑星天牛和四川星天牛的重叠分布区,山西太行山两侧南北走向的狭长地带是光肩星天牛和黄肩星天牛重叠分布区,两个狭长地带交会处,大约在秦岭以北的陕西和(或)山西境内有三个种的重叠分布区域.在云、贵、川地区广泛分布着四川星天牛,至今还没有发现光肩星天牛、黄斑星天牛和蓝角星天牛,后者应该是一个值得怀疑的种。  相似文献

The osphradium is larger and more complex in Conus , a large and taxonomically difficult genus, than in other prosobranch gastropods. We examined intra- and interspecific variation in external anatomical characters of this major chemoreceptor organ, how these relate to ecological characteristics, and the potential of the osphradium to aid taxonomic differentiation, among 22 species of Conus. Six quantitative characters convey the main features of the Conus osphradium: its area, width-length ratio, curvature, orientation relative to the animal's anterior-posterior axis, density of sensory leaflets, and number of digitiform ridges on sensory leaflets. Species in 85% of pairwise comparisons differed significantly with respect to at least one variable. Multivariate discriminant function analysis successfully differentiated other species. Osphradium size relative to body size varied significantly with habitat type, and number of digitiform ridges varied with food type, but other characters were independent of ecological attributes and may potentially be useful in phylogenetic reconstruction.  相似文献

应用核型似近系数聚类分析方法,研究了小稻蝗Oxya hyla intricata、山稻蝗O.Agav-isa、上海稻蝗O.Shanghaiensis无齿稻蝗O.Adentata、中华稻蝗O.Chisensis、日本稻蝗O.Japonica、短额负蝗Atractomorpha sinensis、奇异负蝗A.Pergrina和日本蚱Tetrix japonica等9种蝗虫的亲缘关系。结果显示,9种蝗虫分为3类:稻蝗,负蝗和蚱。6种稻蝗之间的核型似近系数(λ)在0.961~0.5695之间,2种负蝗的λ=0.5867,日本蚱与这8种蝗虫的λ在0.5318~.0322。聚类图直观地反映出它们的亲缘关系与形态分类学的分类结果相一致。从9种蝗虫 的核型演化上看,日本蚱是较原始的类型,负蝗分化也较早,而稻蝗则是较进化的类型。  相似文献

Studies in recent years on chromosome number in freshwater snailsbelonging to the Bulinus truncatus/tropicus complex demonstratedthe occurrence in Kenya of one diploid species, B. tropicus,and 2 tetraploid species, B. truncatus and B. permembranaceus.Further observations are now described on the morphologies ofthe tetraploid species, and their distributions. Observations were made on B. truncatus from 26 localities (11newly reported) and B. permembranaceus from 26 localities (7newly reported), in respect of chromosome number, egg proteins,enzymes (5 systems), shell (10 variables measured), male genitalsystem (normal or aphallic) and radula (1st lateral tooth, sizeand mesocone shape). B. permembranaceus differs most clearly from B. truncatus inegg proteins, enzyme-loci and in lacking aphallic individuals.Mesocone shape is generally less angular in B. permembranaceus.The shell of B. permembranaceus grows larger, has the columellamore commonly concave and its spire is proportionally higherand more acute. To distinguish these tetraploid species fromthe partly sympatric B. tropicus, observations on chromosomenumber and biochemical characters are necessary. The tetraploids are allopatric, B. truncatus being found rarelyas high as 1900 m altitude, whereas B. permembranaceus occupiesthe altitude range 1940–2760 m. B. truncatus may be expandingits distribution in Kenya in man-made waterbodies, while B.permembranaceus possibly is restricted by adaptation to coolconditions and by interaction with B. tropicus. The solanifolia mutant (sf/sf) of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum)produces leaves consisting of leaflets with entire margins,unlike the lobed leaflets of normal plants. Normal plants treatedwith gibberellic acid (GA3) produced leaves with entire marginswhereas mutant plants exposed to 2-chloroethyl-trimethyl ammoniumchloride (CCC)—an inhibitor of gibberellin biosynthesis—producedlobing of leaflets. The leaf area of the mutant was significantlygreater than that of the normal, but was not significantly differentfrom GA3-treated normal leaves. Similarly, in CCC-treated mutantleaves the leaf area was not different from that of normal untreatedleaves. These observations suggest that the sf/sf mutation affectsthe leaf shape through its effect on endogenous gibberellinsand/or inhibitory substances. Studies of food preference often measure the rate of consumptionof prey items by a predator; this confounds the factors determiningattractiveness and edibility, ignoring the fact that preferencesare probably resolved at the pre-ingestive stage of a consumer'sfeeding behaviour. In this paper, a novel technique has beendeveloped to measure the importance of chemical stimuli to feed,perceived by olfactory and gustatory means, as determinantsof the subsequent feeding behaviour of the generalist intertidalherbivore,Littorina littorea (L.). Cell-free extracts of a rangeof algae were presented simultaneously, impregnated in artificialcellulose-based substrates. Subsequent ranking of feeding preferencesreveals hierarchies which correspond with those establishedby other workers, using intact algae to feed L. littorea. Extractsof ephemeral early successional species (e.g. Ulva lactuca,Porphyra umbilicalis) generally provoke a more positive feedingresponse than perennial late successional species (e.g. Fucusvesiculosus, Asco-phyllum nodosum). Animals fed a preferredalga (Ulva lactuca) prior to preference trials displayed a reductionin the strength of preference relative to starved animals. Therewas no evidence of ‘switching’ of preference rankingsdue to satiation, however. These findings confirm the importanceof olfactory-and gustatory-mediated feeding behaviour as theprimary determinant of food preference in L. littorea. Theyare consistent with the hypothesis that the factors which determinethe attractiveness of a food type, such as chemical cues, arethe criteria by which consumers predict the value of that food.  相似文献

Seventeen species of opisthobranch molluscs from Enewetak, MarshallIslands were found to deposit bodies of yolk within their gelatinousegg masses external to the capsules which surround the ova.These observations bring the total number of opisthobranch speciesin which extra-capsular yolk is known to 26. This study reviewsprevious reports of extra-capsular yolk and contributes newdata on the egg masses and developmental characteristics ofspecies in which it is known to occur. The various types ofyolk body found are detailed and categorized, and original observationson the deposition of yolk bodies and their fate during, andsubsequent to embryonic development presented. To date, extra-capsular yolk bodies have been found only withinthe egg masses of species of Chromodoris and Cadlinella (Nudibranchia:Chromodorididae), Elysia (Sacoglossa: Elysiidae), and Bosellia(Sacoglossa: Polybranchiidae). Three types of yolk body arerecognized: (1) cap-like yolk bodies associated with individualcapsules, (2) discrete yolk bodies strewn throughout the eggmass, and (3) continuous or discontinuous yolk strings. Direct consumption of yolk bodies by newlyhatched veligers ofChromodoris albopunctatus (Garrett) is described. In most otherspecies, the yolk disappears during the course of developmentand is probably of nutritive value to the embryos. The availabledata suggest that chromodorid species which utilize extra-capsularyolk during the course of development produce relatively largerlarvae than species with comparably sized ova that do not. Foraging activity of two mid- to low- shore species of limpet,Patella granulans (Prosobranchia) and Siphonaria concinna (Pulmonata)from an exposed shore on the Eastern Cape coast of South Africawas monitored. In both species, activity was compared duringspring and neap tides and, in P. granularis between summer andwinter. Rhythms of activity of the two species were similar,with foraging excursions being mainly associated with nocturnallow tide times, although some P. granularis foraged during daytimelow tides. It is suggested that foraging excursions in P. granularisare triggered by wave action. Both species foraged further onspring tides than on neap tides and this is suggested to bea result of the limited time limpets have to forage. P. granulariswas also found to forage further during summer when comparedto winter and the possibility that seasonal micro-algal productivityinfluences foraging distances in limpets is discussed. The foraging activity of both species could be divided into3 distinct phases, a relatively rapid outward phase, a muchslower foraging phase and a rapid homeward phase. Whether ornot these limpets graze throughout an excursion is not known.S. concinna was found to home to a fixed scar, although duringthe experiment some scar-swapping occurred. P. granularis didnot home to a fixed scar but possessed a ‘home range’(approx. 5 cm2) to which it returned after each excursion. Patella granularis was found to move randomly during foraging,whilst S. concinna foraged in a non-random direction -whichtook individuals upshore. No tidal-influence is thought to bepresent in this case and the possibility of a learning componentin the foraging behaviour of certain limpet species in relationto the return to optimal feeding patches is discussed. Seven new species of the nudibranch genus Trapania Pruvot-Fol,1931 (Goniodorididae) are described from the Indo-West Pacificand an eighth species, T. japonica (Baba, 1935), originallydescribed from one preserved specimen from Japan, is redescribedfrom specimens collected in Hong Kong and tropical eastern Australia.Three of the new species are from temperate south-eastern Australiaand one from tropical eastern Australia. Two species are knownonly from Hong Kong and a third is recorded from the SudaneseRed Sea as well as Hong Kong. Only ten other species of Trapania have been described, sixof those from Europe, and one each from Brazil, California,Japan and New Zealand. The wildtype leaf of the garden pea possesses proximal pairsof leaflets and distal pairs of tendrils in the blade region.Theafila (af) mutation causes leaflets to be replaced by compound(branched) tendrils. We characterized the morphological variationin leaf form along the plant axis and leaf development in earlyand late postembryonic leaves onafilaplants to infer the roleof theAfgene. Leaf forms are more diverse early in shoot ontogenyonafilaplants.Afinfluences pinna length and pinna branchingin addition to pinna type. Pinna initiation in the proximalregion ofafilaleaf primordia is basipetal and delayed comparedto wildtype plants. In addition, pinna development in the proximalregion ofafilaleaves occurs for a longer period of time thanon wildtype leaf primordia. Therefore,Afregulates the timingand direction of leaf developmental processes in the proximalregion of the leaf, but has little effect on the distal region.These data support the heterochronic model of pea leaf morphogenesisproposed by Luet al.
