Ayu Plecoglossus altivelis including amphidromous and landlocked populations, are known for batch spawning. Unusual clutches at ovulation were observed from rearing stocks that were naturally induced to sexual maturation. Two peaks occurred simultaneously in the frequency distribution of egg size, compared to normal fish, which have clutches with unimodal size distribution. The eggs in the small size class could be fertilized, and small-sized larvae hatched from these eggs. To explain the alteration in egg size through divergence from amphidromous to landlocked populations, the role of batch allocation among oocytes is discussed.  相似文献

Ayu, Plecoglossus altivelis, is an amphidromous fish which isdistributed over the Japanese Archipelago including peripheralislands, some of which harbor endangered populations. Weanalyzed nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial DNA controlregion to clarify the factors affecting the genetic variabilityof mainland and insular populations. As inferred from nucleotidediversity , the overall low genetic variability in insularpopulations suggests their vulnerability to extinction, althoughthere were still significant genetic differences betweenpopulations. Patterns of genetic variability were explained bygene flow with the mainland population as inferred from pairwisefixation index F ST and the rate of loss of haplotypes assessedfrom haplotype diversity h, in turn, these two factors arefunctions of the geographical distance from the mainland andpopulation size, respectively. We conclude that the geneticvariability observed on each island is brought about by its owndynamic equilibrium maintained by continuous immigration andlocal extinction, depending on the geographical location of theisland relative to the mainland together with the size of theisland. The biology and the behaviour of fish populations in hypersaline environments are poorly known. The habitat occupation strategy of the tilapia Sarotherodon melanotheron has been studied along a salinity gradient in the Saloum hypersaline estuary in Senegal (salinity between 32 and 100). The individual migratory behaviour has been analysed from otolith strontium-to-calcium concentration ratios from fish sampled in five locations during the 2003 wet season and the 2004 dry season. In the upper part of the estuary (salinities > 50), the Sr:Ca ratio in the otolith showed high variations, from 2.51 to 33.30 × 10−3. These maximum observed values have never been reported in the literature. The individual mean of Sr:Ca ratios increased according to the salinity gradient in the estuary, with significantly higher values in the upper part (Sr:Ca mean = 16 × 10−3) than in the lower part (salinity < 50, Sr:Ca mean = 12 × 10−3). No significant difference in the Sr:Ca mean was observed between locations with comparable salinities. Sr concentration in the water at the different locations was positively correlated with ambient salinity. The mean of Sr:Ca in the otoliths was then in relationship with the level of Sr in the water. Thus, the Sr:Ca ratios in the otolith of S. melanotheron allowed to discriminate the populations of this species and to hypothesize that they did not undertake large scale movements within the estuary.  相似文献

Summary Synaptic connections were studied by means of electron microscopy in the sensory pineal organ of the ayu, Plecoglossus altivelis, a highly photosensitive teleost species. Three types of specific contacts were observed in the pineal end-vesicle: 1) symmetrically organized gap junctions between the basal processes of adjacent photoreceptor cells; 2) sensory synapses endowed with synaptic ribbons, formed by basal processes of photoreceptor cells and dendrites of pineal neurons; 3) conventional synapses between pineal neurons, containing both clear and dense-core vesicles at the presynaptic site. Based on these findings, the following interpretations are given: (i) The gap junctions may be involved in an enhancement of electric communication and signal encoding between pineal photoreceptor cells. (ii) The sensory synapses transmit photic signals from the photoreceptor cells to pineal nerve cells. (iii) The conventional synapses are assumed to be involved in a lateral interaction and/or summation of information in the sensory pineal organ. Ayu (Plecoglossus altivelis) is an Osmerid teleost whose gonadal development exhibits clear photoperiodism: it is stimulated and prevented under short and long photoperiod, respectively. However, the photoreceptor organ involved in this process remains to be identified. In the present study, we examined whether gonads of ophthalmectomized (Ex) and pinealectomized (Px) ayu respond to short photoperiod to test whether photoreceptors other than lateral eyes and pineal complex are involved in the photoperiodic response of gonadal development. Gonadosomatic index (GSI) and plasma levels of sex steroids (testosterone and 11-ketotestosterone for males and testosterone and estradiol 17-beta for females) were significantly increased in the Ex+Px ayu kept under short photoperiod in both males and females as compared with the initial control. On the other hand, there were no significant increases in GSI and sex steroids in the Ex+Px ayu kept under long photoperiod. Histological observation of gonads in the Ex+Px ayu revealed that oocytes undergoing final maturation in females and proliferation of germ cells in males were observed under short photoperiod but not under long photoperiod. These results indicate that extra-retinal and extra-pineal photoreceptive organ regulates photoperiodic gonadal development in this species.  相似文献

As the life cycle of ayu spans river, brackish and seawater environments, it would be a suitable fish model for studying the responses to salinity changes in aquatic animals. We investigated the effect of salinity on trunk kidney proteome in ayu (Plecoglossus altivelis) using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometry. The proteins involved in the process of energy metabolism, biosynthesis, DNA methylation and cell differentiation were mainly affected, and 10 significantly changed proteins were identified. Our result showed that isocitrate dehydrogenase (ICD), pyruvate dehydrogenase (E1), O-glycosyl hydrolase, mitochondrial precursor of ATP synthase subunit beta, mitochondrial ferrtin (MtF), retinol binding protein (RBP) were down-regulated, whereas aldehyde dehydrogenase, cytokeratin 1, S-adenosylhomocysteine hydrolase, Cys-Met metabolism PLP-dependent enzyme were up-regulated when ayu transferred from freshwater to brackish water. Partial coding sequences of E1, ICD, MtF and RBP genes were determined, and the effects of salinity on their mRNA expression in ayu trunk kidney were tested by real-time PCR subsequently. Their possible direct or indirect roles in the adaptation of ayu to salinity are discussed.  相似文献

We investigated the induction of protective immunity against bacterial cold-water disease (BCWD) caused by Flavobacterium psychrophilum by warmed water treatment in ayu (Plecoglossus altivelis). Fish were immersed in a live bacterial suspension (107 CFU mL−1) for 30 min and placed in 700 L concrete tanks. The 28 °C warmed water treatment lasted 3 days and began 1, 6, and 24 h after immersion in the live bacterial suspension. A naïve control fish group was immersed in a sterilized modified Cytophaga (MCY) broth instead of the bacterial suspension. Fourteen days after the immersion, agglutination antibody titers against F. psychrophilum were measured by using micro-titer methods. Fish were then exposed to a bacterial bath to infect them with live F. psychrophilum, and cumulative mortality was monitored. Fish treated with warmed water at 1, 6, and 24 h after immersion in the live bacterial suspension had cumulative mortalities of 36%, 30%, and 18%, respectively, all of which were significantly lower than the cumulative mortality of the naïve control fish (90%). Treated fish also showed high antibody titers against F. psychrophilum in agglutination tests. These results demonstrate that warmed water treatment could not only cure BCWD but also immunize the fish against the causative agent F. psychrophilum.  相似文献

To test the hypothesis of co-adaptation of life histories and daytime vertical distribution (vertical migration behaviour) in Daphnia, life history characteristics were analysed for two positively, three negatively, and four intermediately phototactic Daphnia magna clones. Clones with different phototactic behaviour were found to have divergent life history strategies, with positively phototactic clones being good exploiters under the non-limiting conditions provided in the laboratory, i.e. low density (1 ind./1), high food concentration (6,5–7 105 Scenedesmus cells/ml, restored daily) and high temperature (20° C). They realized a high intrinsic rate of increase at a small adult body size through rapid development, at a cost of producing small neonates. Negatively and intermediately phototactic clones had larger adult body sizes, and produced larger neonates that were more starvation-resistant than those of positively phototactic clones. Selection for high intrinsic rate of increase in intermediately phototactic clones was mediated through the production of large clutches.  相似文献

The sagittal otolith morphology and microchemistry of reared juvenile ayu, Plecoglossus altivelis, were examined to describe the occurrence and microchemical characteristics of the abnormal otoliths in this species. Juvenile ayu (N = 31) were collected in June 2004 at three different locations, Wakayama, Kumamoto, and Biwa Lake in Japan, where they were being reared in freshwater aquaculture ponds after having been collected in the wild as larvae. Otolith abnormality was found in the sagittae of 26% (N = 8) of the individuals examined, of which five fish had abnormal otoliths only on one side, while the otolith on the other side was normal. Abnormal otoliths were more transparent and crystalline in appearance with irregular shapes compared to normal ones that were more opaque and less irregular. Abnormal otoliths were divided into two types, semi-abnormal (Type 1) with a normal part in the center, and fully-abnormal (Type 2) that were completely crystalline in appearance. The line transects and whole otolith concentration maps showed that the contents of Sr, Na and K were lower in the abnormal otolith regions compared to the normal ones, while those of Ca and S were almost constant in both. The appearance and microchemical properties of the abnormal ayu otoliths were similar to the abnormal otoliths in other species in which vaterite replaces the aragonite. Abnormal formation of otoliths occurred in ayu from Biwa Lake (30%) and Kumamoto (45%), while the Wakayama samples had no abnormality. The microchemical analyses of the normal and abnormal otoliths indicated that some abnormal otoliths had formed before the fish were captured and transferred to the hatchery, so the possible causes of otolith abnormality in ayu are discussed.  相似文献

A mapping referential family (F1) of ayu was produced by crossing a normal diploid male with a homozygous clonal female. A genetic linkage map was constructed using 191 amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) and 4 microsatellite DNA markers. A total of 178 loci were mapped in 36 linkage groups comprising 1659.6 cM, which includes approximately 77.3% to 81.8% of the total genome. As the markers were randomly distributed over the genome, they showed high efficiency for the construction of a wide linkage map.  相似文献

刀鲚(Coilia nasus)属辐鳍鱼纲、鲱形目、鳀科,是我国长江下游一种传统的名贵经济鱼类。长江安徽江段为刀鲚的主要分布区之一,但近年来由于人类活动干扰、栖息地衰退及过捕等原因,资源量急剧下降。近期发布的《国家重点保护野生动物名录》水生野生动物调整方案已拟将刀鲚列入国家二级重点野生动物保护名录。为客观了解长江安庆江段刀鲚的生境"履历"及探讨其洄游史,利用X射线电子探针微区分析技术对2008年7月捕获于长江安庆江段的10尾刀鲚(均为传统意义上的长颌鲚)进行了耳石微化学研究。结果表明:这些个体均具典型的溯河洄游习性。从耳石核心到边缘定量线分析结果表明,耳石的沉积过程中元素Sr/Ca比值波动显著,不仅有对应淡水生境的低值(3)阶段,还具有对应河口半咸水、海水生境的高值(3)阶段。这种现象亦得到了16色Sr元素面分布分析结果的印证。根据耳石淡水系数、Sr/Ca比值高低波动特征及Sr元素面分布图谱的差异性可以将这些刀鲚分为3种淡-海水生境转换生活史类型。这种现象明显地反映出长江安庆江段刀鲚的群体具有个体组成和洄游模式的多样性。  相似文献

Field observations of markedRhinogobius sp. DA (Dark type) individuals and monthly sampling in the Kashiwa River, Shikoku Island, Japan, indicated the breeding season of the species to be from mid-April to early July, peaking in May. Mark-and-recapture data showed that at least half of the females spawned more than once in one breeding season. Although eggs in male-guarded nests were all at the same developmental stage, their mean number exceeded that of pre-spawning yolk stage oocytes per female, suggesting that at least some guarding males received eggs from more than one female. The physical condition of both sexes deteriorated considerably during the breeding season, the hepatosomatic index of guarding males decreasing concurrently with the development of eggs. The decline in physical condition of guarding males was attributed mainly to their restricted feeding opportunities.  相似文献

Distributions of mosquito larvae likely are a consequence of multiple factors, although two commonly studied factors (quality of the larval environment and the terrestrial matrix in which these habitats reside) have rarely and simultaneously been varied in the field to understand distributions of larvae. We monitored aquatic containers of two leaf detritus levels within a forest, prairie, and industrial habitat across five months to understand the temporal and spatial colonization of aquatic invertebrates in Northcentral Illinois, USA. Data were collected monthly on mosquito populations and the composition of other invertebrates colonizing containers. Overall, six species of mosquitoes colonized containers, with Culex restuans and Aedes triseriatus having the highest relative abundances. There were strong seasonal abundance patterns for these two mosquito species, with the dominant species changing over time in the forest habitat. The responses of other mosquito taxa were more variable, with abundances reflective of either the terrestrial matrix or larval habitat quality. High detritus containers supported the highest abundances of most species encountered, regardless of habitat. Non-mosquito taxa were less common numerically, but analyses suggested that some taxa, such as syrphid larvae, often co-occurred with mosquitoes. Nested subset analysis indicated communities were strongly nested, and that both habitat type and detritus level were important in explaining nested patterns of aquatic invertebrates. Our data show that both the larval habitat and the surrounding terrestrial matrix shape patterns of container mosquitoes, and that other container invertebrates vary in similar ways as mosquitoes. Summary Age specific fecundity and size of offspring were compared in two populations of Viviparus ater, one from Lake Zürich (Switzerland) and one from Lake Maggiore (Italy). Females were caged and their offspring sampled at weekly intervals. Average fecundity per female over one year was 19.6 and 14.7 offspring in Lake Zürich and Lake Maggiore, respectively. Average shell widths of offspring at birth in the two lakes were 8.5 mm and 7.4 mm. Fecundity did not change with age in Lake Zürich but decreased with increasing age of the snails in Lake Maggiore. Fecundity and offspring size were positively correlated with the size of the females in both lakes, but fecundity was higher and offspring were larger in Lake Zürich than in Lake Maggiore irrespective of the size of the females. An analysis of covariance, correcting for differences between the two lakes in the total fresh weight of the offspring produced annually, showed that females from the two lakes distributed their reproductive investment differently. Females in Lake Zürich produced relatively fewer but larger offspring than females in Lake Maggiore. This trade-off was hidden because females in Lake Zürich produced twice as much offspring biomass as females in Lake Maggiore. Diadromous fish have exhibited a dramatic decline since the end of the 20th century. The allis shad (Alosa alosa) population in the Gironde-Garonne-Dordogne (GGD) system, once considered as a reference in Europe, remains low despite a fishing ban in 2008. One hypothesis to explain this decline is that the downstream migration and growth dynamics of young stages have changed due to environmental modifications in the rivers and estuary. We retrospectively analysed juvenile growth and migration patterns using otoliths from adults caught in the GGD system 30 years apart during their spawning migration, in 1987 and 2016. We coupled otolith daily growth increments and laser ablation inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry measurements of Sr:Ca, Ba:Ca, and Mn:Ca ratios along the longest growth axis from hatching to an age of 100 days (i.e., during the juvenile stage). A back-calculation allowed us to estimate the size of juveniles at the entrance into the brackish estuary. Based on the geochemistry data, we distinguished four different zones that juveniles encountered during their downstream migration: freshwater, fluvial estuary, brackish estuary, and lower estuary. We identified three migration patterns during the first 100 days of their life: (a) Individuals that reached the lower estuary zone, (b) individuals that reached the brackish estuary zone, and (c) individuals that reached the fluvial estuary zone. On average, juveniles from the 1987 subsample stayed slightly longer in freshwater than juveniles from the 2016 subsample. In addition, juveniles from the 2016 subsample entered the brackish estuary at a smaller size. This result suggests that juveniles from the 2016 subsample might have encountered more difficult conditions during their downstream migration, which we attribute to a longer exposure to the turbid maximum zone. This assumption is supported by the microchemical analyses of the otoliths, which suggests based on wider Mn:Ca peaks that juveniles in 2010s experienced a longer period of physiological stress during their downstream migration than juveniles in 1980s. Finally, juveniles from the 2016 subsample took longer than 100 days to exit the lower estuary than we would have expected from previous studies. Adding a new marker (i.e., Ba:Ca) helped us refine the interpretation of the downstream migration for each individual.  相似文献

Migratory animals endure high stress during long-distance travel in order to benefit from spatio-temporally fluctuating resources, including food and shelter or from colonization of unoccupied habitats. Along with some fishes and shrimps, nerite snails in tropical to temperate freshwater systems are examples of amphidromous animals that migrate upstream for growth and reproduction after a marine larval phase. Here I report, to my knowledge, the first example of ‘hitchhiking’ behaviour in the obligatory migration of animals: the nerite snail Neritina asperulata appears to travel several kilometres as minute juveniles by firmly attaching to the shells of congeneric, subadult snails in streams of Melanesian Islands, presumably to increase the success rate of migration.  相似文献

Despite the fact that flow and channel morphology are two critical factors that need to be taken into account when considering the conservation or restoration of river environments, there are no reports on the response of fish assemblages to changes involving both variables in combination. This study examined the response of fish assemblages to artificially induced changes in flow discharge in an experimental stream that had simple (a glide reach) and complex (pool–riffle reach) morphologies. When the flow of the glide reach was increased, the fish assemblage structure changed from one dominated by the demersal species Misgurnus anguillicaudatus and Cobitis sp. to one dominated by the water-column species Zacco platypus and Gnathopogon elongatus. In the pool–riffle reach, the fish assemblage structure changed from one dominated by Cobitis sp. and Z. platypus to one dominated by Plecoglossus altivelis altivelis. When the flow discharge was low, the fish assemblages of both reach types resembled each other in being dominated largely by demersal species, but when flow was increased these similarities faded and distinct assemblages emerged. In the glide reach, increasing the flow volume caused a linear increase in both water depth and velocity and a gradual increase in the diversity of water-column species, their relative abundance, and size. The number of Z. platypus increased fivefold whereas the number of M. anguillicaudatus decreased to less than a quarter of their original number. In the pool–riffle reach, the number of P. altivelis altivelis grew conspicuously although increased flow produced no clear increase in depth or velocity. Calculation of the availability of physical habitat environments suitable for Z. platypus and P. altivelis altivelis in each reach type indicated that preferable habitat for both species was more available in the glide reach. The lower abundance of P. altivelis altivelis in the glide reach was attributed to the relatively low availability of algal food resource due to the sand-predominated substrate whereas pebbles predominated in the pool–riffle reach providing good conditions for algal growth. Our findings suggest the need for a framework for considering environmental flow that takes into account variables such as channel morphology and food resource conditions.  相似文献

Summary A mark-recapture study was carried out in sympatric populations of Lacerta agilis and Lacerta vivipara in the Netherlands from 1976 to 1982. In most years the age structure of both populations was pyramidal. For both species life expectation of females was higher and on average they did live longer. Hence the sex ratio for adults deviated significantly from 1.0 in favour of females. Maximum age for Lacerta vivipara was 8 years (female) and for Lacerta agilis 12 years (male). The density of both species fluctuated around 100/ha. The biomass of Lacerta agilis was twice that of Lacerta vivipara. In Lacerta vivipara the 3rd and 4th calendar year class supplied 78% of total net reproduction; in Lacerta agilis the 4th, 5th, and 6th calendar year classes supplied 68%. In both populations the population replacement rate was 2. Population turnover time was 4.83 years for Lacerta agilis and 2.81 for Lacerta vivipara. The life history strategy of the Lacerta vivipara population is compared with six other European Lacertavivipara populations.  相似文献
