In this article, I draw on anthropological and feminist scholarship on the body and the nature/culture divide as a framework for understanding the place of surrogate mothers in a conceptual ideology that connects motherhood with nature. I explore links between the medicalization of childbirth in Israel and the personal agency of surrogate mothers as relayed through interviews. Taking the patriarchal context of the Israeli surrogacy law of 1996 into consideration, I underscore surrogates' imaginative use of medical metaphors as tools for the subversion of surrogacy's threatening social connotations. By redefining the surrogate body as "artificial" and locating "nature" in the commissioning mother's body, surrogates adopt medical rhetoric to transform surrogacy from a transgressive act into an alternative route toward achieving normative Israeli national reproductive goals.  相似文献

Examinations of 297 sera for diphtheria antitoxin and 160 sera for tetanus antitoxin were carried out in 1981. All sera were obtained from the cord blood of mothers between 15 and 34 years of age. The mothers were divided into four age groups each of which was further subdivided into the primipara and multipara subgroups. The aim was to assess the age-specific variations in response to active immunization against diphtheria and tetanus. The protective level of diphtheria antitoxin (at least 0.01 I.U./ml) was recorded in the serum of 96.3% of examinees and the rates of seropositivity were found to fall with increasing age. The protective level of tetanus antitoxin (at least 0.1 I.U./ml) was found in the serum of 95.2% of mothers. The serologic response encountered in groups of older mothers was a clear-cut demonstration that the country-wide mass immunization against tetanus carried out between 1974 and 1975 was highly effective and fully justified. The variations in the diphtheria and tetanus antitoxin levels found in the primipara and multipara subgroups were not statistically significant.  相似文献

Communal rearing, the shared rearing of offspring by multiple individuals or mothers, may improve the fitness of individuals in group‐living species. To date, many studies have focused on these potential fitness consequences. Fewer studies have emphasized the relative contributions to care of offspring by mothers and non‐breeding alloparents in singularly breeding groups (i.e., one female breeds) and mothers within plurally breeding groups (i.e., more than one female breeds). We compared the care provided by prairie vole (Microtus ochrogaster) mothers and alloparents in singularly breeding groups and mothers in plurally breeding groups. Subjects were littermate siblings in both types of social groups. Specifically, we quantified the amount of time that mothers and alloparents were away from pups during 6 h observational trials and the amount of time that females tactilely stimulated pups (licking and grooming) during 20 min trials. We also compared the quality of milk, measured as total solids, produced by mothers in plurally breeding groups. In singularly breeding groups, mothers spent significantly more time out of the nest but tactilely stimulated pups more than alloparents. In plurally breeding groups, focal mothers (i.e., the first mother to produce a litter) spent significantly more time out of the nest than second mothers (i.e., the second female to produce a litter) but licked and groomed pups an equal amount as second mothers. In plurally breeding groups, focal and second mothers produced milk with a similar concentration of total solids. These results suggest that communal rearing in groups is more beneficial to focal mothers than to other breeding or non‐breeding adult females. We discuss fitness‐based hypotheses that may explain the observed differences in the amount of care provided by mothers and alloparents.  相似文献

Epidemiological studies have reported that most of the severe dengue cases occur upon a secondary heterologous infection. Furthermore, babies born to dengue immune mothers are at greater risk of developing severe disease upon primary infection with a heterologous or homologous dengue virus (DENV) serotype when maternal antibodies reach sub-neutralizing concentrations. These observations have been explained by the antibody mediated disease enhancement (ADE) phenomenon whereby heterologous antibodies or sub-neutralizing homologous antibodies bind to but fail to neutralize DENV particles, allowing Fc-receptor mediated entry of the virus-antibody complexes into host cells. This eventually results in enhanced viral replication and heightened inflammatory responses. In an attempt to replicate this ADE phenomenon in a mouse model, we previously reported that upon DENV2 infection 5-week old type I and II interferon (IFN) receptors-deficient mice (AG129) born to DENV1-immune mothers displayed enhancement of disease severity characterized by increased virus titers and extensive vascular leakage which eventually led to the animals’ death. However, as dengue occurs in immune competent individuals, we sought to reproduce this mouse model in a less immunocompromised background. Here, we report an ADE model that is mediated by maternal antibodies in type I IFN receptor-deficient A129 mice. We show that 5-week old A129 mice born to DENV1-immune mothers succumbed to a DENV2 infection within 4 days that was sub-lethal in mice born to naïve mothers. Clinical manifestations included extensive hepatocyte vacuolation, moderate vascular leakage, lymphopenia, and thrombocytopenia. Anti-TNFα therapy totally protected the mice and correlated with healthy hepatocytes. In contrast, blocking IL-6 did not impact the virus titers or disease outcome. This A129 mouse model of ADE may help dissecting the mechanisms involved in dengue pathogenesis and evaluate the efficacy of vaccine and therapeutic candidates.  相似文献

Young of the Japanese foliage spider, Chiracanthium japonicum, show matriphagy, whereby they consume their own mothers before dispersal. By removing mothers in the laboratory, I examined the importance of this sacrificial habit for offspring survival and dispersal behavior. Spiderlings that cannibalized their mothers gained weight more than threefold and dispersed from their breeding nests after molting into the third instar. The third-instar spiderlings had relatively longer legs than the previous instars and appeared to be more adapted to a solitary hunting life style. On the other hand, most spiderlings separated from their mothers could not molt into the third instar and dispersed significantly earlier than those with matriphagy. Furthermore, the lack of matriphagy decreased the survival rate of predispersal spiderlings. These results showed that matriphagy of C. japonicum has a great advantage in allowing offspring to disperse at a more developed and active instar. I examined the function of maternal care in a foliage spider,Chiracanthium japonicum. Females of this species make breeding nests with rolled-up grass leaves and provide themselves to spiderlings as food at the end of maternal care. By removing mothers from their offspring at 2 different times, the effects of maternal care on egg and spiderling survival rates were estimated separately. Mother attendance greatly improved survival and development of eggs as well as spiderlings. Detailed observations on the fate of immatures in breeding nests with and without their mothers showed lower hatching and spiderling emergence rates when mothers were removed. Furthermore, spiderlings that fed on their mother’s body showed accelerated growth and quickly molted into the 3rd instar with the delay of dispersal. This suggests that matriphagy, or eating the mother, enables spiderlings of this species to disperse at a later instar. Therefore, I conclude that the maternal care of this spider consists of guarding offspring, supporting offspring development and feeding spiderlings.  相似文献

Many investigations have noted bad influence of smoking during pregnancy. In the present article, the influence of mothers smoking during pregnancy on the body mass index (BMI), birth weight and birth length are examined. This retrospective research included 219 children: Group I: 109 children from rural area of east Slavonia (born in General Hospital-Vinkovci) and group II: 110 children from industrial area (born in Zagreb). The questioned subjects were divided into two groups depending on mothers smoking during pregnancy: newborns of mothers who didn't smoke during pregnancy (subgroup A) and newborns of mother who did smoke 10 or more cigarettes per day during pregnancy (subgroup B). Anthropometric parameters (BMI, birth length and birth weight) in newborns of non-smoking mothers were statistically higher (p < 0.05) than in newborns of smoking mothers. Moderate correlation between birth length and birth weight in newborns of non-smoking and smoking mothers from rural area and from non-smoking mothers in urban area was statistically significant, but correlation in the group in newborns of smoking mothers from Zagreb was not statistically significant. Results of this research show that smoking during pregnancy significantly influences the birth weight and birth length. Further investigation is needed, to investigate the lack of correlation between the birth length and birth weight in newborns of smoking mothers from industrial city.  相似文献

The number and gender of offspring produced in a current reproductive event can affect a mother's future reproductive investment and success. I studied the subsequent reproductive outcome of pre-industrial (1752-1850) Finnish mothers producing twins versus singletons of differing gender. I predicted that giving birth to and raising twins instead of singletons, and males instead of females, would incur a greater reproductive effort and, hence, lead to larger future reproductive costs for mothers. I compared the mothers' likelihood of reproducing again in the future, their time to next reproduction and the gender and survival of their next offspring. I found that mothers who produced twins were more likely to stop breeding or breed unsuccessfully in the future as compared with women of a similar age and reproductive history who produced a same-gender singleton child. As predicted, the survival and gender of the offspring produced modified the costs of reproduction for the mothers. Giving birth to and raising males generally appeared to be the most expensive strategy, but this effect was only detected in mothers who produced twins and, thus, suffering from higher overall costs of reproduction.  相似文献

Evolutionary theory predicts that mothers of different condition should adjust the birth sex ratio of their offspring in relation to future reproductive benefits. Published studies addressing variation in mammalian sex ratios have produced surprisingly contradictory results. Explaining the source of such variation has been a challenge for sex-ratio theory, not least because no mechanism for sex-ratio adjustment is known. I conducted a meta-analysis of previous mammalian sex-ratio studies to determine if there are any overall patterns in sex-ratio variation. The contradictory nature of previous results was confirmed. However, studies that investigated indices of condition around conception show almost unanimous support for the prediction that mothers in good condition bias their litters towards sons. Recent research on the role of glucose in reproductive functioning have shown that excess glucose favours the development of male blastocysts, providing a potential mechanism for sex-ratio variation in relation to maternal condition around conception. Furthermore, many of the conflicting results from studies on sex-ratio adjustment would be explained if glucose levels in utero during early cell division contributed to the determination of offspring sex ratios.  相似文献

The human fetus is exposed to a variety of environmental agents and drugs which cross the placenta and can induce DNA damage. Micronucleus (MN) determination is a suitable and sensitive method for measuring DNA damage and since umbilical cord blood is obtained without any risk for the newborn, we measured the frequency of MN in cells from cord blood in four groups of healthy newborns (NB): 35 NB whose mothers lived in two urban cities (groups I and II); 16 NB from an agricultural area (group III); and 15 NB of mothers with high-risk pregnancy (group IV). MN were also evaluated in the mothers of NB from group I (n=17) and group III (n=14). Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) concentration was measured in groups I and III. The average frequency of binucleated cells with MN was 3.7+/-1.4 in 1000 cells in mothers and 1+/-0.9 in 1000 cells in NB from urban areas; and 4.5+/-2.4 in 1000 cells in mothers and 2+/-1.5 in 1000 cells in NB from the agricultural area. The correlation between the frequency of MN in mothers and NB was significant (r=0.61, p<0.01). AChE levels of samples obtained both from group III mothers and from newborns were similar to those of group I. The Wilcoxon's rank-sum test was applied to measure differences in MN frequency; NB of group I were used as control group. A significant (p<0.01) higher frequency of MN (4+/-2) was found only in lymphocytes from NB from high-risk pregnancies. Data indicate that MN evaluation in umbilical cord samples might be useful in the identification of transplacental mutagens.  相似文献

Offspring of diabetic mothers are at risk of cardiovascular diseases in adulthood. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms are not clear. We hypothesize that prenatal exposure to maternal diabetes up‐regulates myocardial NOX2 expression and enhances ischaemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury in the adult offspring. Maternal diabetes was induced in C57BL/6 mice by streptozotocin. Glucose‐tolerant adult offspring of diabetic mothers and normal controls were subjected to myocardial I/R injury. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression, ROS generation, myocardial apoptosis and infarct size were assessed. The VEGF‐Akt (protein kinase B)‐mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR)‐NOX2 signalling pathway was also studied in cultured cardiomyocytes in response to high glucose level. In the hearts of adult offspring from diabetic mothers, increases were observed in VEGF expression, NOX2 protein levels and both Akt and mTOR phosphorylation levels as compared to the offspring of control mothers. After I/R, ROS generation, myocardial apoptosis and infarct size were all significantly higher in the offspring of diabetic mothers relative to offspring of control mothers, and these differences were diminished by in vivo treatment with the NADPH oxidase inhibitor apocynin. In cultured cardiomyocytes, high glucose increased mTOR phosphorylation, which was inhibited by the PI3 kinase inhibitor LY294002. Notably, high glucose‐induced NOX2 protein expression and ROS production were inhibited by rapamycin. In conclusion, maternal diabetes promotes VEGF‐Akt‐mTOR‐NOX2 signalling and enhances myocardial I/R injury in the adult offspring. Increased ROS production from NOX2 is a possible molecular mechanism responsible for developmental origins of cardiovascular disease in offspring of diabetic mothers.  相似文献

Breastfeeding has immense public health value for mothers, babies, and society. But there is an undesirably large gap between the number of new mothers who undertake and persist in breastfeeding compared to what would be a preferred level of accomplishment. This gap is a reflection of the many obstacles, both physical and psychological, that confront new mothers. Previous research has illuminated many of these concerns, but research on this problem is limited in part by the unavailability of a research instrument that can measure the key differences between first-time mothers and experienced mothers, with regard to the challenges they face when breastfeeding and the instructional advice they require. An instrument was designed to measure motivational complexity associated with sustained breast feeding behaviour; the Breastfeeding Motivational Measurement Scale. It contains 51 self-report items (7 point Likert scale) that cluster into four categories related to perceived value of breast-feeding, confidence to succeed, factors that influence success or failure, and strength of intentions, or goal. However, this scale has not been validated in terms of its sensitivity to profile the motivation of new mothers and experienced mothers. This issue was investigated by having 202 breastfeeding mothers (100 first time mothers) fill out the scale. The analysis reported in this paper is a three factor solution consisting of value, midwife support, and expectancies for success that explained the characteristics of first time mothers as a known group. These results support the validity of the BMM scale as a diagnostic tool for research on first time mothers who are learning to breastfeed. Further research studies are required to further test the validity of the scale in additional subgroups.  相似文献

Paternal kin discrimination: the evidence and likely mechanisms   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
One of the most important assumptions of kin selection theory is that individuals behave differently towards kin than non-kin. In mammals, there is strong evidence that maternal kin are distinguished from non-kin via familiarity. However, little is known about whether or not mammals can also recognize paternal kin as many female mammals, including primates, mate with multiple males near the time of conception, potentially concealing paternal kinship. Genetic data in several mammalian species with a promiscuous mating system and male-biased dispersal reveal a high skew in male reproduction which leads to co-residing paternal half-siblings. In most primates, individuals also form stable bisexual groups creating opportunities for males to interact with their offspring. Here I consider close paternal kin co-resident in the same social group, such as father-offspring and paternal half-siblings (i.e. animals sharing the same father but who were born to different mothers) and review mammalian studies of paternal kin discrimination. Furthermore, I summarize the most likely mechanisms of paternal kin discrimination (familiarity and phenotype matching). When familiarity is the underlying mechanism, mothers and/or the sire could mediate familiarity among paternal half-siblings as well as between fathers and offspring assuming mothers and/or fathers can assess paternity. When animals use phenotype matching, they might use their fathers' template (when the father is present) or self (when the father is absent) to assess paternal kinship in others. Available evidence suggests that familiarity and phenotype matching might be used for paternal kin discrimination and that both mechanisms might apply to a wide range of social mammals characterized by a high skew in male reproduction and co-residence of paternal kin. Among primates, suggested evidence for phenotype matching can often have an alternative explanation, which emphasizes the crucial importance of controlling for familiarity as a potential confounding variable. However, the mechanism/s used to identify paternal kin might differ within a species (as a function of each individual's specific circumstances) as well as among species (depending upon the key sensory modalities of the species considered). Finally, I discuss the possible cues used in paternal kin discrimination and offer suggestions for future studies.  相似文献

The effects of parasites on host fitness and the fitness effects of maternal effects are widely discussed. In this study, I conducted an experiment linking both aspects. I manipulated the ectoparasite load (Acari: Arrenurus cuspidator) of damselflies, Coenagrion puella, and found that larvae from mothers with high parasite loads were larger (assessed by head width) than larvae from mothers with low parasite loads. Furthermore, there was a negative correlation between the number of eggs laid and parasite load. Parasitized mothers thus seemed to have fewer, but probably better, offspring. The ecological significance of these parasite-mediated maternal effects remains to be tested. However, size-dependent cannibalism almost certainly has important consequences for population dynamics. This short essay examines infant formula marketing and information sources for their representation of "choice" in the infant feeding context, and finds that while providing information about breast and bottle feeding, infant formula manufacturers focus on mothers' feelings and intuition rather than knowledge in making decisions. In addition, the essay considers how "choice" operates in the history of reproductive rights, shifting the discourse from a rights-based set of arguments to one based on a consumerist mentality. Utilizing the work of historian Rickie Solinger and a 2007 paper for the National Bureau of Labor Statistics, I argue that the structure of market work, and not abstract maternal decision making, determine mothers' choices and practices concerning infant feeding. For true freedoms for mothers to be achieved, freedoms that would include greater social provisions for mothers, our culture will have to confront how structural constraints make breastfeeding difficult, as well as how the concept of choice divides mothers into those who make good choices and those who do not.  相似文献

Recently, we showed that both maternal malnutrition during lactation and leptin treatment during the neonatal period program thyroid function. In this study we evaluate whether maternal leptin treatment during lactation programs thyroid function of the offspring in the adulthood. The dams were divided into 2 groups: Lep-daily sc single injected with 8 microg/100 g of body weight with recombinant rat leptin during the last 3 days of lactation and control group (C) that received the same volume of saline. The 180 day-old animals received a single i.p. injection of (125)I (2.22x10(4) Bq) and they were killed 2 h after the injection. Triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), thyrotropin (TSH) and leptin concentrations were measured by radioimmunoassay. The milk of leptin-treated mothers on the last day of treatment had higher leptin (p<0.05) concentration. The pups of the leptin-treated mothers had at 21 days an unchanged T3, T4 and leptin serum concentrations with higher TSH (p<0.05). The offspring of Lep mothers had at 180 days a higher T3 (p<0.05) with normal thyroid (125)I uptake, T4 and TSH serum concentrations compared to the controls. So, the mother's hyperleptinaemia during lactation programs to a higher T3 serum concentration on the offspring, probably by a higher leptin transfer through the milk.  相似文献

Despite a vast literature on the factors controlling adult size, few studies have investigated how maternal size affects offspring size independent of direct genetic effects, thereby separating prenatal from postnatal influences. I used a novel experimental design that combined a cross-fostering approach with phenotypic manipulation of maternal body size that allowed me to disentangle prenatal and postnatal maternal effects. Using the burying beetle Nicrophorus vespilloides as model organism, I found that a mother''s body size affected egg size as well as the quality of postnatal maternal care, with larger mothers producing larger eggs and raising larger offspring than smaller females. However, with respect to the relative importance of prenatal and postnatal maternal effects on offspring growth, only the postnatal effects were important in determining offspring body size. Thus, prenatal effects can be offset by the quality of postnatal maternal care. This finding has implications for the coevolution of prenatal and postnatal maternal effects as they arise as a consequence of maternal body size. In general, my study provides evidence that there can be transgenerational phenotypic plasticity, with maternal size determining offspring size leading to a resemblance between mothers and their offspring above and beyond any direct genetic effects.  相似文献

Summary I examined the potential inheritance of the ability of Columbian ground squirrels (Spermophilus columbianus) to select an optimal diet. I calculated the diet that would maximize daily energy intake for each of 21 adult females and their litters, using a linear programming optimization model for each individual. The absolute value of the difference between an individual's predicted optimal diet and observed diet (deviation from an optimal diet) was used as a measure of an individual's foraging ability. The foraging ability of individuals was consistent over time and in different foraging environments, so I considered foraging ability to be a potentially heritable trait.Inheritance was determined from correlations of mother and offspring foraging ability. I experimentally removed some mothers just as they weaned their offspring so that offspring could not be influenced by their mother while learning to forage, while leaving the other mothers to raise their litters normally. In both cases, offspring strongly resembled their mother in foraging ability. However, offspring with mothers absent exhibited significantly larger deviations from their optimal diet. Offspring with mothers absent appeared to imitate their mother's diet during lactation, and this tendency partially explained their greater deviation. Consequently, offspring appear to inherit the ability to forage optimally from their mother, perhaps through observational learning or imitation. There may also be a genetic basis to foraging ability, but uncontrolled maternal effects in the experiment prevent a proper test for it.  相似文献

I analyzed the temporal organization of individual Japanese macaques’ (Macaca fuscata) grooming sequences in 14 mothers and 13 offspring of different age/sex classes and 4 nonkin females. I hypothesized that preceding grooming affects subsequent grooming by the same individual. Grooming bouts were likely to be terminated as the bouts became longer when females groomed nonrelatives. Moreover, the duration of first bouts was longer than that of following bouts. These effects were also seen in grooming of mothers by their offspring > 1 year old and that of adult and adolescent female offspring by their mothers. In contrast, neither the duration of first bouts nor the number of preceding bouts had much effect on the occurrence or duration of subsequent bouts in any subject.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The role of maternal zinc nutrition in human oral clefts (OCs) is unclear. We measured plasma zinc concentrations (PZn) of case and control mothers to evaluate the associations between PZn and risk of OCs with and without other malformations. METHODS: Case mothers were ascertained by the Utah Birth Defects Network and control mothers were selected from Utah birth certificates by matching for child gender and delivery month and year. Maternal blood was collected >1 year after the last pregnancy. PZn was available for 410 case mothers who were divided into four subgroups: isolated cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL/P‐I, n = 231), isolated cleft palate (CP‐I, n = 74), CL/P with other malformations (CLP‐M, n = 42), and CP with other malformations (CP‐M, n = 63). PZn was available for 447 control mothers. The mean age of children at blood sampling was 3.7 years for all cases combined and 4.3 years for controls. RESULTS: Mean PZns of all groups were similar, and low PZn (<11.0 μmol/L) was found in 59% of cases and 62% of controls. Risk of OCs did not vary significantly across PZn quartiles for the four subgroups individually and all OC groups combined. CONCLUSIONS: We previously reported that poor maternal zinc status was a risk factor for OCs in the Philippines, where OC prevalence is high and maternal PZn is low. In Utah, however, no such association was found, suggesting that poor maternal zinc status may become a risk factor only when zinc status is highly compromised.
