The photosynthetic response of 8 cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) genotypes to changing irradiance was investigated under field conditions during the 1998 through 2000 growing seasons. Equations developed to describe the response of net photosynthetic rate (PN) to photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) demonstrated that, across all irradiances, the two okra leaf-type genotypes photosynthesized at a greater rate per unit leaf area than all of the six normal leaf-type genotypes. This superior photosynthetic performance of the okra leaf-type genotypes can be partially explained by their 13 % greater leaf chlorophyll content relative to that of the normal leaf-type genotypes. The 37 % reduction in leaf size brought upon by the okra leaf trait may have concentrated the amount of photosynthetic machinery per unit leaf area. Nevertheless, the lack of sufficient canopy leaf surface area suppressed the potential yield development that could accompany the higher PN per unit leaf area.  相似文献

The influence of phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) supply on biomass, leaf area, photon saturated photosynthetic rate (Pmax), quantum yield efficiency (α), intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci), and carboxylation efficiency (CE) was investigated in Vicia faba. The influence of P on N accumulation, biomass, and leaf area production was also investigated. An increase in P supply was consistently associated with an increase in N accumulation and N productivity in terms of biomass and leaf area production. Furthermore, P increased the photosynthetic N use efficiency (NUE) in terms of Pmax and α. An increase in P supply was also associated with an increase in CE and a decrease in Ci. Under variable daily meteorological conditions specific leaf nitrogen content (NL), specific leaf phosphorus content (PL), specific leaf area (δL), root mass fraction (Rf), Pmax, and α remained constant for a given N and P supply. A monotonic decline in the steady-state value of Rf occurred with increasing N supply. δL increased with increasing N supply or with increasing NL. We tested also the hypothesis that P supply positively affects both N demand and photosynthetic NUE by influencing the upper limit of the asymptotic values for Pmax and CE, and the lower limit for Ci in response to increasing N.  相似文献

The relationship between leaf photosynthetic rate (A) in a vegetation canopy and the net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE) over an entire ecosystem is not well understood. The aim of the present study is to assess the coordinated changes in NEE derived with eddy covariance, A measured in leaf cuvette, and their associations in a rainfed maize field. The light response-curves were estimated for the carbon assimilation rate at both the leaf and ecosystem scales. NEE and A synchronically changed throughout the day and were greater around noon and persisted longer during rapid growth periods. The leaf A had a similar pattern of daytime changes in the top, middle, and bottom leaves. Only severe leaf ageing led to a significant decline in the maximum efficiency of photosystem II (PSII) photochemistry. The greater maximum NEE was associated with a higher ecosystem quantum yield. NEE was positively and significantly correlated with the leaf A averaged based on the vertical distribution of leaf area. The finding highlights the feasibility of assessing NEE by leaf CO2 exchange because of most of experimental data obtained with leaf cuvette methods; and also implies that simultaneously enhancing leaf photosynthetic rate, electron transport rate, net carbon assimilation at whole ecosystem might play a critical role for the enhancement of crop productivity.  相似文献

Comparing with other angiosperms, most members within the family Orchidaceae have lower photosynthetic capacities. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Cypripedium and Paphiopedilum are closely related phylogenetically in Orchidaceae, but their photosynthetic performances are different. We explored the roles of internal anatomy and diffusional conductance in determining photosynthesis in three Cypripedium and three Paphiopedilum species, and quantitatively analyzed their diffusional and biochemical limitations to photosynthesis. Paphiopedilum species showed lower light-saturated photosynthetic rate (A N), stomatal conductance (g s), and mesophyll conductance (g m) than Cypripedium species. A N was positively correlated with g s and g m. And yet, in both species A N was more strongly limited by g m than by biochemical factors or g s. The greater g s of Cypripedium was mainly affected by larger stomatal apparatus area and smaller pore depth, while the less g m of Paphiopedilum was determined by the reduced surface area of mesophyll cells and chloroplasts exposed to intercellular airspace per unit of leaf area, and much thicker cell wall thickness. These results suggest that leaf anatomical structure is the key factor affecting g m, which is largely responsible for the difference in photosynthetic capacity between those two genera. Our findings provide new insight into the photosynthetic physiology and functional diversification of orchids.  相似文献

Transgenic Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) rice have been reported to acquire effective resistance against the target pests; however, the insertion and expression of alien Bt genes may have some unintended effects on the growth characteristics of rice. A screen-house experiment was conducted and repeated twice to investigate the growth characteristics and Bt protein expressions in two Bt rice lines [MH63 (Cry2A*) and MH63 (Cry1Ab/Ac)], which had different Bt protein expression levels in leaves, under zero nitrogen (N0) and recommended nitrogen (NR) fertilizer applications. Compared to the counterpart MH63, MH63 (Cry2A*) under N0 experienced accelerated leaf senescence and a lower internal N use efficiency (IEN), resulting in a 23.2% decrease in grain yield and a lower accumulated biomass. These variations were revealed to be correlated to the higher ratio of the Bt protein content to the soluble protein content (BTC/SPC) with a maximum value of 4.3‰ in MH63 (Cry2A*) leaves in the late growth stage. Under NR, no differences in growth characteristics between MH63 (Cry2A*) and MH63 were found. The growth characteristics of MH63 (Cry1Ab/Ac), with a lower BTC/SPC in the late growth stage compared to MH63 (Cry2A*), were identical to those of MH63 under the two N applications. Results show that the transgenic Bt rice MH63 (Cry2A*), with a relatively higher Bt protein expression in the late growth stage, had an inferior adaptation to nitrogen deficiency compared to its non-Bt counterpart. And this inferior adaptation was found to be correlated with the higher BTC/SPC in MH63 (Cry2A*) leaves in the late growth stage.  相似文献

The black locust is adapted to elevated [CO 2 ] through changes in nitrogen allocation characteristics in leaves.

Abstract

The black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) is an invasive woody legume within Japan. This prolific species has a high photosynthetic rate and growth rate, and undergoes symbiosis with N2-fixing micro-organisms. To determine the effect of elevated CO2 concentration [CO2] on its photosynthetic characteristics, we studied the chlorophyll (Chl) and leaf nitrogen (N) content, and the leaf structure and N allocation patterns in the leaves and acetylene reduction activity after four growing seasons, in R. pseudoacacia. Our specimens were grown at ambient [CO2] (370 μmol mol?1) and at elevated [CO2] (500 μmol mol?1), using a free air CO2 enrichment (FACE) system. Net photosynthetic rate at growth [CO2] (A growth) and acetylene reduction activity were significantly higher, but maximum carboxylation rate of RuBisCo (V cmax), maximum rate of electron transport driving RUBP regeneration (J max), net photosynthetic rate under enhanced CO2 concentration and light saturation (A max), the N concentration in leaf, and in leaf mass per unit area (LMA) and ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase oxygenase (RuBisCo) content were significantly lower grown at elevated [CO2] than at ambient [CO2]. We also found that RuBisCo/N were less at elevated [CO2], whereas Chl/N increased significantly. Allocation characteristics from N in leaves to photosynthetic proteins, NL (Light-harvesting complex: LHC, photosystem I and II: PSI and PSII) and other proteins also changed. When R. pseudoacacia was grown at elevated [CO2], the N allocation to RuBisCo (NR) decreased to a greater extent but NL and N remaining increased relative to specimens grown at ambient [CO2]. We suggest that N remobilization from RuBisCo is more efficient than from proteins of electron transport (NE), and from NL. These physiological responses of the black locust are significant as being an adaptation strategy to global environmental changes.

The relative shade tolerance of T. cordata , F. sylvatica , and C. betulus in mature stands is based on different species-specific carbon and nitrogen allocation patterns.

Abstract

The leaf morphology and photosynthetic capacity of trees are remarkably plastic in response to intra-canopy light gradients. While most studies examined seedlings, it is not well understood how plasticity differs in mature trees among species with contrasting shade tolerance. We studied light-saturated net photosynthesis (A max), maximum carboxylation rate (V cmax), electron transport capacity (J max) and leaf dark respiration (R d) along natural light gradients in the canopies of 26 adult trees of five broad-leaved tree species in a mixed temperate old-growth forest (Fraxinus excelsior, Acer pseudoplatanus, Carpinus betulus, Tilia cordata and Fagus sylvatica), representing a sequence from moderately light-demanding to highly shade-tolerant species. We searched for species differences in the dependence of photosynthetic capacity on relative irradiance (RI), specific leaf area (SLA) and nitrogen per leaf area (N a ). The three shade-tolerant species (C. betulus, T. cordata, F. sylvatica) differed from the two more light-demanding species by the formation of shade leaves with particularly high SLA but relatively low N a and consequently lower area-based A max, and a generally higher leaf morphological and functional plasticity across the canopy. Sun leaf morphology and physiology were more similar among the two groups. The three shade-tolerant species differed in their shade acclimation strategies which are primarily determined by the species’ plasticity in SLA. Under low light, T. cordata and F. sylvatica increased SLA, mass-based foliar N and leaf size, while C. betulus increased solely SLA exhibiting only low intra-crown plasticity in leaf morphology and N allocation patterns. This study with mature trees adds to our understanding of tree species differences in shade acclimation strategies under the natural conditions of a mixed old-growth forest.  相似文献

The parameters of the electrode region of an electrode microwave discharge in nitrogen are studied by emission spectroscopy. The radial and axial distributions of the intensities of the bands of the second (N2(C 3Π u B 3Π g )) and first (N2(B 3Π g A 3Σ u + )) positive systems of molecular nitrogen and the first negative system of nitrogen ions (N 2 + (B 2Σ u + X 2Σ g + )), the radial profiles of the electric field E and the electron density N e , and the absolute populations of the vibrational levels v C = 0–4 of the C 3Π u excited state of N2 and the vibrational level v Bi = 0 of the B 2Σ u + excited state of a molecular nitrogen ion are determined. The population temperature of the first vibrational level T V of the ground electronic state X 1Σ g + of N2 and the excitation temperature T C of the C 3Π u state in the electrode region of the discharge are measured. The radius of the spherical region and the spatially integrated plasma emission spectra are studied as functions of the incident microwave power and gas pressure. A method for determining the electron density and the microwave field strength from the plasma emission characteristics is described in detail.  相似文献

Above-ground biomass (AGB) is an important indicator of grassland ecosystem performance. Easily measured plant functional traits (PFTs) may provide useful predictors of the response of plants to grazing. Understanding the response of PFTs to grazing and the relationship between PFTs and AGB is very important for effectively predicting the response of ecosystems to grazing and rangeland management. A grazing experiment was conducted in Gangcha County, Qinghai Province, in the northeastern part of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau in 2012 and 2013. We investigated the response of PFTs in three dominant species (Elymus nutans, Kobresia humilis, and Stipa purpurea) to grazing, using six stocking rates. Plant height (PH), plant weight, leaf area, and leaf dry biomass of these three dominant species had significantly negative relationships with stocking rate. Leaf thickness (LT) of these three species usually showed a unimodal response to grazing. Specific leaf area generally showed a quadratic relationship with grazing intensity. No consistent effects of grazing were observed on nitrogen content per unit mass (N mass) and nitrogen content per unit area (N area). PH, leaf area, and leaf dry mass (LDM) were positively associated with AGB, but LT, N mass, and N area had no statistically significant association with AGB. We thus conclude that PH, leaf area, and LDM best predict the effects of grazing on AGB. Finally, 2.87 sheep/ha is recommended as the optimal stocking rate in this region to maintain the health of this grassland ecosystem and to allow for sustainable development.  相似文献

The study unraveled the dynamics of mechanisms causing biennality in coffee, its consequences for competition for carbon and nitrogen and suggests means of adequately managing the problem.

Abstract

Imbalance in fruit load and branch growth plays a role in the occurrence of biennial bean production patterns in coffee (Coffea arabica L.). Effects of fruit load manipulations were studied in two field experiments in the Jimma region, Ethiopia, over two consecutive years. Treatments consisted of reducing fruit loads in the pinhead stage to 25, 50, 75 % and controls keeping 100 % of the fruits per tree (treatments coded T25 through T100). Treatments were applied in the first year only. Branch growth and the formation of new leaves, drop of old leaves, light saturated rate of leaf photosynthesis (A max), nitrogen content of leaves on selected branches, as well yield and bean characteristics were evaluated throughout the experimental period. The study revealed that branch growth, and leaf N content per unit leaf area, N a, were inversely associated with fruit load, whereas loss of basal leaves on branches increased with fruit load and over time. A max was strongly and linearly associated with N a and declined with increase in fruit load. In the year of treatment green bean yield increased with fruit load, but in the second year the reverse was true. On aggregate over 2 years, treatment T25 and T50 out yielded treatments T75 and T100. Fruit thinning shifted the bean size distribution to larger sizes. In conclusion, fruit thinning modulated the balance between branch growth and fruit development. Thus enhanced branch growth, improved bean size and stabilized yield over years.

Background and aims

Low nitrogen negatively affects soil fertility and plant productivity. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) and Epichloë gansuensis endophytes are two factors that are associated with tolerance of Achnatherum inebrians to abiotic stress. However, the possibility that E. gansuensis interacts with G6PDH in enhancing low nitrogen tolerance of host grasses has not been examined.

Methods

A. inebrians plants with (E+) and without E. gansuensis (E?) were subjected to different nitrogen concentration treatments (0.1, 1, and 7.5 mM). After 90 days, physiological studies were carried out to investigate the participation of G6PDH in the adaption of host plants to low nitrogen availability.

Results

Low nitrogen retarded the growth of A. inebrians. E+ plants had higher total dry weight, chlorophyll a and b contents, net photosynthesis rate, G6PDH activity, and GSH content, while having lower plasma membrane (PM) NADPH oxidase activity, NADPH/NADP+ ratios, and MDA and H2O2 than in E? A. inebrians plants under low nitrogen concentration.

Conclusions

The presence of E. gansuensis played a key role in maintaining the growth of the A. inebrians plants under low nitrogen concentration by regulating G6PDH activity and the NADPH/NADP+ ratio and improving net photosynthesis rate.

Background and Aims

Theory for optimal allocation of foliar nitrogen (ONA) predicts that both nitrogen concentration and photosynthetic capacity will scale linearly with gradients of insolation within plant canopies. ONA is expected to allow plants to efficiently use both light and nitrogen. However, empirical data generally do not exhibit perfect ONA, and light-use optimization per se is little explored. The aim was to examine to what degree partitioning of nitrogen or light is optimized in the crowns of three tropical canopy tree species.

Methods

Instantaneous photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) incident on the adaxial surface of individual leaves was measured along vertical PPFD gradients in tree canopies at a frequency of 0·5 Hz over 9–17 d, and summed to obtain the average daily integral of PPFD for each leaf to characterize its insolation regime. Also measured were leaf N per area (Narea), leaf mass per area (LMA), the cosine of leaf inclination and the parameters of the photosynthetic light response curve [photosynthetic capacity (Amax), dark respiration (Rd), apparent quantum yield (ϕ) and curvature (θ)]. The instantaneous PPFD measurements and light response curves were used to estimate leaf daily photosynthesis (Adaily) for each leaf.

Key Results

Leaf Narea and Amax changed as a hyperbolic asymptotic function of the PPFD regime, not the linear relationship predicted by ONA. Despite this suboptimal nitrogen partitioning among leaves, Adaily did increase linearly with PPFD regime through co-ordinated adjustments in both leaf angle and physiology along canopy gradients in insolation, exhibiting a strong convergence among the three species.

Conclusions

The results suggest that canopy tree leaves in this tropical forest optimize photosynthetic use of PPFD rather than N per se. Tropical tree canopies then can be considered simple ‘big-leaves’ in which all constituent ‘small leaves’ use PPFD with the same photosynthetic efficiency.Key words: Optimal resource allocation, nitrogen, photosynthetic capacity, leaf mass per area, tropical trees, radiation use efficiency, scaling, leaf angle, canopy architecture, big leaf model  相似文献

Novel QTL for salinity tolerance traits have been detected using non-destructive and destructive phenotyping in bread wheat and were shown to be linked to improvements in yield in saline fields.

Abstract

Soil salinity is a major limitation to cereal production. Breeding new salt-tolerant cultivars has the potential to improve cereal crop yields. In this study, a doubled haploid bread wheat mapping population, derived from the bi-parental cross of Excalibur?×?Kukri, was grown in a glasshouse under control and salinity treatments and evaluated using high-throughput non-destructive imaging technology. Quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis of this population detected multiple QTL under salt and control treatments. Of these, six QTL were detected in the salt treatment including one for maintenance of shoot growth under salinity (QG(15).asl-7A), one for leaf Na+ exclusion (QNa.asl-7A) and four for leaf K+ accumulation (QK.asl-2B.1, QK.asl-2B.2, QK.asl-5A and QK:Na.asl-6A). The beneficial allele for QG(15).asl-7A (the maintenance of shoot growth under salinity) was present in six out of 44 mainly Australian bread and durum wheat cultivars. The effect of each QTL allele on grain yield was tested in a range of salinity concentrations at three field sites across 2 years. In six out of nine field trials with different levels of salinity stress, lines with alleles for Na+ exclusion and/or K+ maintenance at three QTL (QNa.asl-7A, QK.asl-2B.2 and QK:Na.asl-6A) excluded more Na+ or accumulated more K+ compared to lines without these alleles. Importantly, the QK.asl-2B.2 allele for higher K+ accumulation was found to be associated with higher grain yield at all field sites. Several alleles at other QTL were associated with higher grain yields at selected field sites.

Plasticity in plants could be changed due to abiotic factors, tending to increase fitness across environments. In the Neotropical savannah, a strong water deficit during the dry season is one of the main factors limiting the plasticity in physiological responses of plants. The present study aims to assess the plasticity in physiological responses and vegetative phenology of three plant species of the Neotropical savannah (Cerrado in Brazil) during the dry and the rainy seasons. The three species, Byrsonima verbascifolia, Roupala montana, and Solanum lycocarpum, occur in Serra do Cipó in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The development and vegetative phenology of individuals of these three species were evaluated over the course of 1 year. In February 2012 (rainy season) and August 2012 (dry season), stomatal conductance (g s), water potential (Ψ), photosynthetic quantum yield, and concentration of leaf photosynthetic pigments were measured. The relative distance among the physiological parameters of all individuals within each season was measured using the relative distance plasticity index. B. verbascifolia has pronounced senescence in July and lost leaves completely by the early September, while R. montana and S. lycocarpum have green leaves throughout the year. The three studied species had greater control of stomatal opening during the dry season. S. lycocarpum and R. montana had negative water potential values in the dry season and in the middle of the day in both seasons. In the dry season, the three species exhibited a decrease in F v/F m, with values between 0.7 and 0.75. The relative distance plasticity index varied from 0 to 1. R. montana demonstrated the greatest plasticity and S. lycocarpum had lower plasticity. Then, a seasonal effect on physiological response was observed in all three model-species, with lower values for leaf water potential and stomatal conductance, and increased photoinhibition, in the dry season. Ecophysiological traits, such as stomatal conductance and leaf water potential, exhibited the greatest plasticity. In addition, there was a seasonal effect on the plasticity in physiological responses of the three plants species of the Neotropical savannah. The results are contradicting the idea that water restriction in the dry season would reduce the plasticity in most species of the Neotropical savannah.  相似文献

We develop Bayesian function-valued trait models that mathematically isolate genetic mechanisms underlying leaf growth trajectories by factoring out genotype-specific differences in photosynthesis. Remote sensing data can be used instead of leaf-level physiological measurements.

Abstract

Characterizing the genetic basis of traits that vary during ontogeny and affect plant performance is a major goal in evolutionary biology and agronomy. Describing genetic programs that specifically regulate morphological traits can be complicated by genotypic differences in physiological traits. We describe the growth trajectories of leaves using novel Bayesian function-valued trait (FVT) modeling approaches in Brassica rapa recombinant inbred lines raised in heterogeneous field settings. While frequentist approaches estimate parameter values by treating each experimental replicate discretely, Bayesian models can utilize information in the global dataset, potentially leading to more robust trait estimation. We illustrate this principle by estimating growth asymptotes in the face of missing data and comparing heritabilities of growth trajectory parameters estimated by Bayesian and frequentist approaches. Using pseudo-Bayes factors, we compare the performance of an initial Bayesian logistic growth model and a model that incorporates carbon assimilation (A max) as a cofactor, thus statistically accounting for genotypic differences in carbon resources. We further evaluate two remotely sensed spectroradiometric indices, photochemical reflectance (pri2) and MERIS Terrestrial Chlorophyll Index (mtci) as covariates in lieu of A max, because these two indices were genetically correlated with A max across years and treatments yet allow much higher throughput compared to direct leaf-level gas-exchange measurements. For leaf lengths in uncrowded settings, including A max improves model fit over the initial model. The mtci and pri2 indices also outperform direct A max measurements. Of particular importance for evolutionary biologists and plant breeders, hierarchical Bayesian models estimating FVT parameters improve heritabilities compared to frequentist approaches.

Nitrogen (N) is the key factor limiting photosynthetic processes and crop yield. Little is known about the response of leaf gas exchange of spring triticale (Triticosecale Wittm.) to N supply. The effect of N fertilizers on different gas exchange variables, i.e., photosynthetic rate (A), transpiration rate (E), stomatal conductance (g s), instantaneous water use efficiency (WUE) and maximum quantum yield of photosystem II (PSII) (F v/F m), chlorophyll index (SPAD, soil–plant analysis development), and the relationship of these variables with yield were studied in spring triticale grown under field conditions. Six treatments of N—0, 90, 180, 90 + 30, 90 + 30 + 30 kg ha?1 (applied as ammonium nitrate, AN) and one treatment of N 90 + 30 + 30 kg ha?1 (applied as urea ammonium nitrate solution, UAN) were compared. The analysis of variance showed that throughout the triticale growing season, N fertilization had significant effects on A, WUE, g s and SPAD. On average, N fertilizer application increased A values by 14–70%. E and F v/F m values were not influenced by N fertilization levels. The effect of growth stage and year on gas exchange variables and F v/F m and SPAD was found to be significant. At different growth stages, A values varied and maximum ones were reached at BBCH 31–33 (decimal code system of growth stages) and BBCH 59. With aging, values of A decreased independently of N fertilization level. The gas exchange variables were equally affected by both fertilizer forms. The interplay among grain yield, leaf gas exchange variables, F v/F m and SPAD of spring triticale was estimated. The statistical analysis showed that grain yield positively and significantly correlated with A and SPAD values throughout the growing season.  相似文献

Different groundwater conditions affect leaf hydraulic conductance and leaf pressure–volume parameters in Populus euphratica at the extremely arid zone in the northwest of China.

Abstract

Efficient water transport inside leaves constitutes a major determinant of plant function, especially in drought-stressed plants. The previous researches have reported the correlation between leaf hydraulic properties and water availability. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that water relation parameters of Populus euphratica in an extremely arid zone of China are sensitive and acclimated to groundwater depth. We measured leaf hydraulic conductance (K leaf) using rehydration kinetics methods (RKM), pressure–volume (P–V) curves, and leaf vulnerability curves of P. euphratica growing at four groundwater depth gradients. We also assessed the hydraulic safety margins across groundwater depth gradients. We found that K leaf–max shows an increasing trend as the groundwater depth increases, while osmotic potential at full turgor (πft) and turgor loss point (Ψtlp) exhibits a decreasing trend, suggesting that increased tolerance to drought is formed as the groundwater depth increases. Furthermore, safety margins showed positive and negative variations under different groundwater depths, indicating that P. euphratica has formed special drought survival strategies, which can be summarized as a “conservative” strategy in favorable water conditions or a “risk” strategy in severe drought stress.

Comparing the ratio of effective number of breeders (N b ) to adult population size (N) among closely related coexisting species can provide insights into the role of life history on N b /N ratios and inform conservation programs towards limiting the loss of evolutionary potential in natural populations. We estimated N b and N in two coexisting salmonid fishes (Brook trout and Atlantic salmon) for 3–4 consecutive years in two small, adjacent streams in Newfoundland, Canada, using mark-recapture (N), linkage disequilibrium (N b(LD)), and sibship frequency approaches (N b(Sib) ). We found that N b /N ratios were about 20-fold greater in Atlantic salmon than in brook trout (mean 0.20, range 0.06–0.56 vs. mean 0.02, range 0.01–0.05, respectively). This difference was consistent across N b estimators. In addition, we found that removing migrants reduced N b : the strength of the effect was weak for N b(LD) and much stronger for N b(Sib). Our results highlight the importance of subtle ecological differences and gene flow in shaping N b /N. They also provide some evidence that the linkage between demographic and evolutionary processes varies between closely related taxa and suggest that a more complete understanding of the N b /N range across various species is an important component of conservation genetics and management.  相似文献

QTL for a wheat ideotype root system and its plasticity to nitrogen deficiency were characterized.

Abstract

Root system architecture-related traits (RRTs) and their plasticity to nitrogen availability are important for nitrogen acquisition and yield formation in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). In this study, quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis was conducted under different nitrogen conditions, using the seedlings of 188 recombinant inbred lines derived from a cross between Kenong 9204 and Jing 411. Fifty-three QTL for seven RRTs and fourteen QTL for the plasticity of these RRTs to nitrogen deficiency were detected. Thirty of these QTL were mapped in nine clusters on chromosomes 2B, 2D, 3A, 3D, 6B, 6D, 7A and 7B. Six of these nine clusters were also colocated with loci for nitrogen use efficiency (NUE)-related traits (NRTs). Among them, three QTL clusters (C2B, C6D and C7B) were highlighted, considering that they individually harbored three stable robust QTL (i.e., QMrl-2B.1, QdRs-6D and QMrl-7B). C2B and C7B stably contributed to the optimal root system, and C6D greatly affected the plasticity of RRTs in response to nitrogen deficiency. However, strong artificial selection was only observed for C7B in 574 derivatives of Kenong 9204. Covariance analysis identified QMrl-7B as the major contributor in C7B that affected the investigated NRTs in mature plants. Phenotypic analysis indicated that thousand kernel weight might represent a “concomitant” above-ground trait of the “hidden” RRTs controlled by C7B, which are used for breeding selection. Dissecting these QTL regions with potential breeding value will ultimately facilitate the selection of donor lines with both high yield and NUE in wheat breeding programs.

Coexistence of multiple species is a fundamental aspect of plant and forest ecology. Although spatial arrangement of leaves within crowns is an important determinant of light interception and productivity, shoot structure varies considerably among coexisting canopy species. We investigated the relative importance of structural traits in determining the light availability of leaves (I) and light interception efficiency at the current-year shoot level (LIECS; the total light interception of leaves divided by shoot biomass) at the top of crowns of 11 canopy species in a cool-temperate forest in Japan. In accordance with Corner’s rules, the total mass, stem mass, total mass of leaf laminae, individual leaf area, and stem cross-sectional area of current-year shoot were positively correlated with each other, and branching intensity (the number of current-year shoots per branch unit of 1-m length) was inversely correlated with these traits across species. In contrast, I was correlated not with these traits, but with leaf elevation angle (a L). Moreover, variation in LIECS across species was caused by variation in I (thus in a L). Thus, a L is a key parameter for the leaf light interception of canopy shoots in this cool-temperate forest. Differences in a L across species might be related to different physiological strategies that developed in the high light and water-limited environment of forest canopies. Small variation in the length of current-year shoots among species implies that variations in I and LIECS would be important for the coexistence of these canopy species.  相似文献
