Using histological techniques, we have simultaneously examined the co-development of the Aphelinid parasitoid Encarsia formosa and its host the greenhouse whitefly, Trialeurodes vaporariorum. Previously we have determined that regardless of the whitefly instar parasitized, parasitoid larvae would not molt to their final instar until the whitefly reaches its maximum dimensions. In unparasitized T. vaporariorum, this point in development corresponds to the initiation of the adult molt. In part, this study was conducted to determine the developmental state of parasitized whiteflies at the time they achieve their maximum dimensions. It was found that parasitized final instar T. vaporariorum do, in fact, undergo a final molt and that E. formosa larvae will not molt to their final instar until this has occurred. The timing of the final whitefly molt appears unaffected by parasitization. The commonly observed melanization of parasitized whiteflies appears to be a consequence of this molt. In addition, we have discovered that the adult wasp oviposits within the ventral ganglion of the whitefly, and that major organ systems of the whitefly persist very late into parasitoid development. We also report the presence of possible endosymbiotic bacteria residing in the fatbody of E. formosa.  相似文献

Relative effects of parasitism by Microplitis rufiventris on the development of the third instar Spodoptera littoralis (preferable, optimal host) with the development of penultimate (5th) and last (6th) instars (suboptimal hosts) were investigated. Newly molted 6th instar hosts were more acceptable for parasitization by the wasp female than older hosts. In singly parasitized 3rd instar hosts, 82.0 +/- 3.9% of the parasitoid eggs developed to full-grown instar wasp larvae. However, parasitoid eggs deposited singly in 73.9 +/- 3.3% of 5th and 100% of 6th instar hosts failed to develop. Superparasitization in the 3rd instar hosts reduced the production of pseudoparasitized larvae and, conversely, all parasitized hosts yielded viable parasitoid offspring. In suboptimal hosts, the development interaction between the parasitoid and its host larvae was highly influenced by the age of hosts at parasitism, load of deposited eggs, and other parasitoid factors. The latter factors, e.g., mainly calyx fluid particles, might be involved in establishing parasitoid eggs in the suboptimal hosts. In the last two host instars, superparasitization significantly increased the number of parasitoid larvae successfully reaching their final instar. Variation in host quality, e.g., physiological status, might be attributed, in part, to the partial breakdown of the solitary habit observed in the earlier instars. More parasitoid eggs developed to mature parasitoid larvae in hosts superparasitized as 6th instar than parasitoid eggs laid in 5th instar hosts. Superparasitization significantly lengthened the developmental period of 5th and 6th host instars and inhibited their development to the pupal stage. Studying parasitoid development in suboptimal instars of its habitual host provided physiological insight, as shown here. The results may have implication for biological control and in vitro mass rearing programs with solitary parasitoids.  相似文献

Reproductive biology including mating, adult longevity, fecundity and development of the tachinid fly Zenillia dolosa was investigated for optimizing rearing procedures using Mythimna separata as a host in the laboratory. Females lay microtype eggs containing a first instar larva on food plants of the host and then the eggs must be ingested by the host for parasitization. Mating success was 58.5% with mating duration of 80.7 min. Mating was most successful when day 0–1 females were kept with day 2–4 male flies. Female body size was positively correlated with its fecundity but not with longevity. However, females that survived longer produced more eggs during their lifetime. Parasitoids successfully developed in 4th to 6th instar host larvae. Host instars at the time of parasitoid egg ingestion significantly influenced development time of the immature parasitoid, but did not affect body size of the emerging parasitoid. We suggest that pairing newly emerged females with day 2–4 males should result in higher mating success and using the last instar hosts for parasitization should minimize development time of the parasitoid for rearing.  相似文献

The host instar preferences of Encarsia bimaculata and Eretmocerus sp. nr. furuhashii parasitizing Bemisia tabaci and their development on four host plants, collard, eggplant, cucumber and tomato, were studied in the laboratory. Both of the parasitoids accepted all nymphal stages of B. tabaci, but E. bimaculata preferred third and fourth instars while Er. sp. nr. furuhashii preferred second and third instars under both choice and no choice conditions. Regardless of host stage parasitized, adults of parasitoids emerged only from fourth instars. When given the simultaneous choice of all instars, E. bimaculata reduced parasitization of first and second instars (3.73 and 4.76%, respectively) while increasing parasitization of third and fourth instars (5.44 and 6.93%, respectively), in contrast Er. sp. nr. furuhashii increased its parasitization of second and third instar nymphs (1.27 and 3.17%, respectively) and decreased that of first and fourth instars (7.0 and 3.06%, respectively). Host plants did not significantly influence instar preference for either parasitoid. Developmental periods of both the parasitoids from egg to adult emergence were longest when first instars were parasitized and shortest when fourth instars were selected. Parasitoid developmental time was generally shorter on glabrous plants than on hirsute plants.  相似文献

Eretmocerus mundus Mercet is a parasitoidof Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) indigenous tothe Mediterranean and is used commercially foraugmentative biological control in Spain andelsewhere. A better understanding of thesuitability of different host instars wouldhelp optimize production and field application.Incidence of parasitism, development time, survivorship and sex ratio were evaluated whendifferent nymphal instars of the sweetpotatowhitefly Bemisia tabaci biotype `Q' wereoffered for parasitization. Experiments wereconducted on sweet pepper at 25 °C, 75%RH and 16:8 (L:D) photoperiod. E. mundusoviposited in all nymphal instars of B.tabaci except the mature 4th instar orpharate adult (previously designated, `pupa').Incidence of parasitism was greatest (33.8± 5.1 parasitized nymphs) and developmenttime shortest (14.1 ± 0.1 d) whenoviposition occurred under 2nd and3rd instar nymphs compared to 1st or4th instars. Survivorship (85%) andoffspring sex ratio (39.8% female) did notdiffer statistically for parasitoids developingin whiteflies that were parasitized asdifferent instars. Although 2nd and3rd instars were clearly the mostfavorable host stage for E. mundus, itscapacity to parasitize and develop on a widerange of host stages is a favorablecharacteristic for both rearing and fieldapplication.

Abstract Thelyotokous biotype of Eretmocerus mundus Mercet (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), a parasitoid of Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae), was recently recorded in northern Iran. Reproductive biology of this biotype was studied as part of an evaluation of its potential for biological control of B. tabaci. The parasitoid deposited more eggs under 2nd and 3rd nymphal instars than 1st or 4th instars. Adult females fed honey, with no access to whitefly nymphs, lived significantly longer (13.6 ± 4.7 d) than those given access to nymphs, but not fed honey (7.6 ± 2.21 d). Lifetime fecundity averaged 81.7 ± 26.9 female progeny per female parasitoid, ranging from 11–132. Daily fecundity, measured as the number of whitefly nymphs parasitized by per female each day for 10 d, averaged 18.06 ± 3.95 for the first 6 d of life, and then declined to < 11. Developmental time from oviposition to parasitoid emergence was significantly shorter in the 3rd instar of the host (15.9 ± 1.06 d) than in the 1st instar (18.7 ± 2.3 d), but not in the 2nd instar (16.4 ± 1.3 d).  相似文献

Although 5th (last) instar parasitized Manduca sexta larvae undergo developmental arrest and do not wander, they exhibit a small hemolymph ecdysteroid peak (300-400pg/&mgr;l) which begins one day prior to the parasitoid's molt to the 3rd (last) instar and concomitant emergence from the host. Ecdysteroids present in this peak were 20-hydroxyecdysone, 20,26-dihydroxyecdysone and one or more very polar ecdysteroids, as well as small amounts of 26-hydroxyecdysone and ecdysone. In parasitized day-1 and -2 5th instars ligated just behind the 1st abdominal proleg, hemolymph ecdysteroid levels increased in both anterior and posterior portions (100-500pg/&mgr;l), while in unparasitized larvae, hormone levels only increased in the anterior portion (100-350pg/&mgr;l). Thus, the ecdysteroid peak observed in host 5th instars was probably produced, at least in part, by the parasitoids. It may serve to promote Cotesia congregata's molt from the second to the third instar and/or to facilitate parasitoid emergence from the host. In parasitized day-1 and -2 5th instars ligated between the last thoracic and 1st abdominal segments, hemolymph ecdysteroid titers reached much higher levels (500-3500pg/&mgr;l) in the anterior portion (no parasitoids present) than in the posterior portion (150-450pg/&mgr;l). Therefore, it appears that the parasitoid's regulation of hemolymph ecdysteroid titers occurs at two levels. First, parasitization neutralizes the host's ability to maintain its normal hemolymph ecdysteroid levels. Second, in a separate action, the parasitoid manipulates the ecdysteroid-producing machinery so that hemolymph levels are maintained at the 200-400pg/&mgr;l characteristic of day 3-4 hosts. This is the first report of a parasitoid's ability to interfere with the normal inhibitory mechanisms which prevent prothoracic gland production of ecdysteroid at inappropriate periods of insect growth and development.  相似文献

Superparasitism refers to the oviposition behavior of parasitoid females who lay their eggs in an already parasitized host. Recent studies have shown that allocation of additional eggs to an already parasitized host may be beneficial under certain conditions. In the present work, mortality of Microplitis rufiventris wasps was significantly influenced by both host instar of Spodoptera littoralis larvae at parasitism and level of parasitism. In single parasitization, all host instars (first through sixth) were not equally suitable. Percentage of emergence success of wasp larvae was very high in parasitized first through third (highly suitable hosts), fell to 60% in the fourth instar (moderate suitable) and sharply decreased in the penultimate (5th) instars (marginally suitable). Singly parasitized sixth (last) instar hosts produced no wasp larvae (entirely unsuitable), pupated and eclosed to apparently normal adult moths. The scenario was different under superparasitism, whereas supernumerary individuals in the highly suitable hosts were almost always killed as first instars, superparasitization in unsuitable hosts (4th through 6th) had significant increase in number of emergence success of wasp larvae. Also, significantly greater number of parasitoid larvae successfully developed in unsuitable hosts containing three wasp eggs than counterparts containing two wasp eggs. Moreover, the development of surplus wasp larvae was siblicidal in earlier instars and nonsiblicidal gregarious one in the penultimate and last “sixth” instars. It is suggested that the optimal way for M. rufiventris to deal with high quality hosts (early instars) is to lay a single egg, while the optimal way to deal with low quality hosts (late instars) might be to superparasitize these hosts.  相似文献

The biology of the arrhenotokous autoparasitoid,Encarsia pergandiella Howard, was studied in the laboratory on the silverleaf whitefly,Bemisia argentifolii Bellows & Perring. Egg to adult development of parasitoid females averaged ca. 14 days at about 25.3+0.2?C regardless of whether the whitefly host was reared on tomato, eggplant or squash. While all instars ofB. argentifolii were accepted for primary parasitization, a greater percentage of third and fourth instars were parasitized. Mortality of whitefly nymphs in the absence of parasitization did not differ among instars and averaged about 35%. Second instar to pupal parasitoid females were accepted for secondary parasitization although a greater percent of pupal females were parasitized. About 40% of immatureE. pergandiella females more than 4 days old died in the absence of secondary parasitization when exposed to adultE. pergandiella females.  相似文献

Microplitis mediator (Haliday) is a solitary endoparasitoid of larvae of the cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) and the oriental armyworm, Mythimna = Leucania separata (Walker). The preference and suitability of different instars of M. separata for M. mediator were determined under laboratory conditions at a constant temperature of 26 ± 1 °C, 65 ± 5% RH and L14:D10 photoperiod. The selection coefficient revealed that M. mediator parasitized 1st to 4th instars, but preferred 2nd and 3rd instars. Seventy-one percent of parasitism was achieved within 24 h when the 2nd instars were used as hosts at a density of one parasitoid per 20 Larvae. Parasitoid egression and pupation were dependent on the host instar parasitized and occurred from the 1st through the 4th instar. The mean developmental time from egg to prepupae of M. mediator within 1st to 4th instars of the host was 8.27, 8.30, 8.30 and 9.20 days, respectively. Cocoon weights were lower when 1st and 2nd instars served as hosts rather than 3rd and 4th instars. The percentage of host larva that died before parasitoid egression declined as the age of the host increased, ranging from 26% to 2% for 1st–5th instars, respectively. The results of this study suggest that 2nd and 3rd instars of M. separata would be the best host stages for mass production of M. mediator in the laboratory and the best host instars to target for effective control in field releases.  相似文献

Euplectrus comstockii Howard (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), is an ectoparasitic, gregarious wasp which parasitizes the larval stage of several important lepidopteran pests. Parasitization of both natural and unnatural hosts prevents molting in the parasitized instar. Here we report the effect of wasp venom on the European corn borer (unnatural host), an important pest of corn and other vegetables. Venom collected from venom glands of adultE. comstockii, when injected intoO. nubilalis 5th instars, inhibited the growth rate, development and molting of the injected larvae. The observed effect on molting was dose and age dependent. When 3rd, 4th and 5th instarO. nubilalis were envenomated by adult wasps, the larvae also were developmentally arrested and failed to undergo a molt. However, 3rd and 4th instars underwent apolysis (separation of the epidermis from the old cuticle) and produced new cuticle. Fifth instars did not. A premolt hemolymph ecdysteroid peak was not observed in these experimental 5th instars, but injections of 20-hydroxy-ecdysone induced apolysis and new cuticle formation. Envenomated 4th instars (on becoming pharate 5th instars) exhibited a premolt hemolymph ecdysteroid peak. HPLC/RIA revealed that 20-hydroxyecdysone was present in the hemolymph of these pharate 5th instars. Thus, in the European corn borer, the mode of action of the venom depended upon the instar parasitized. Our results support the presence of a venom component(s) that, in 4th instar hosts, inhibited ecdysis, but did not prevent hemolymph ecdysteroid levels from increasing sufficiently to stimulate apolysis. In 5th instars, the same, or perhaps, a different component(s) ofE. comstockii venom prevented the synthesis/release of ecdysteroid by inhibiting a previously unknown molt-regulating physiological event that occurs between days 3 and 4 of the instar. A system of markers has been devised to track the development of 3rd and 4th instar/pharate adult greenhouse whiteflies. Instars were identified based on measurements of body width and body length. Depending upon the host plant, the product of the two measurements was exceptionally useful in distinguishing between instars. Body depth was used to divide the 3rd instar into eight stages and body depth and color and appearance of the developing adult eye were used to divide the 4th instar/pharate adult into nine stages. Under conditions of L:D 16:8 and a temperature of 26±2°C, the body depth of 3rd instars reared on greenbean increased from 0.025 (stage 1) to 0.2 mm (stage 8) and the instar duration was approximately 3 days. The body depth of 4th instars increased from approximately 0.1±0.02 (Stage 1) to 0.3±0.03 mm (Stage 5) and then remained constant or decreased slightly during adult development. Ecdysteroid titers peaked at approximately 120 fg/μg protein during Stages 3 through 6 of the 4th instar. Based on an external examination of developing 4th instars and the fluctuations in ecdysteroid titer, it appears that adult development is initiated in Stage 4 or 5 4th instars. Results from histological studies support this view. In Stage 4 nymphs, a subtle change was observed in the corneagenous cells of the eye. However, most Stage 4 4th instars possessed wing development characteristic of earlier, immature stages. In all Stage 5 insects, wing development had been initiated and the corneagenous cells had become quite distinct. In Stage 6 whiteflies, the wing buds were deeply folded and by Stage 7, spines were observed on the new cuticle, indicating that the adult cuticle was well-formed by this stage. Our study is the first to investigate the timing and regulation of the molt, to monitor ecdysteroid titers in precisely staged 4th instar whiteflies and to examine the internal anatomical changes associated with metamorphosis in these tiny homopteran insects.  相似文献

The developmental progress of silverleaf whitefly (Bemisia argentifolii) 3rd instars and 4th instar/pharate adults was monitored using a tracking system that had been designed to identify synchronous individuals in another species of whitefly, the greenhouse whitefly, Trialeurodes vaporariorum. When reared on greenbean under conditions of LD 16:8 and a temperature of 26 +/- 2 degrees C, the body depth of 3rd instar SLWFs increased from approximately 0.04 mm (Stage 2) to 0.175-0.2 mm (Stage 7-8) and the body depth of the 4th instar increased from approximately 0.1 mm (Stage 1) to 0.25-0.30 mm (Stage 4-5). The durations of the 3rd instar and the 4th instar/pharate adult were approximately 3 and 7 days, respectively. Examination of coronal sections of 4th instars revealed that adult eye and wing development are initiated during Stage 6, the stage in which an external examination showed that the eye has begun to undergo pigment diffusion. Ecdysteroid titers peaked at approximately 400 fg/ micro g protein during stages 4 through 6A of the 4th instar, i.e., just prior to and upon the initiation of the pharate adult stage. Although adult development is initiated later in the SLWF than in the GHWF (adult eye and wing development begin in Stages 4 and 5, respectively, in GHWFs), the same rapidity of metamorphosis is observed in both species. Within approximately 24 h, the simple bi-layered wing bud developed into a deeply folded wing of nearly adult proportions and within an additional 12-24 h, the nymphal eye and wing bud had been replaced by the well-differentiated eye and wing of the adult whitefly. Our study is the first to describe the regulation, timing, and progress of the nymphal-adult molt and of the structural changes that accompany nymphal-adult metamorphosis in the SLWF.  相似文献

Second instar larvae of Lymantria dispar were parasitized or injected with parasitoid-derived factors such as venom, calyx fluid or parasitoid eggs from Glyptapanteles porthetriae . Growth and development of the host larvae were affected in all different groups compared to control larvae of the same age, injected with Ringer solution. The greatest impact on host growth and on the duration of the 3rd instar was caused by injecting parasitoid eggs. Treated larvae showed melanized capsules or nodules in the hemocoel. While the wasp age had no effect on parasitization efficiency or on the percentage of melanized particles in the hemocoel, significantly more encapsulations were found in larvae parasitized by old wasps as opposed to young wasps. Superparasitization (double or quadruple oviposition) increased the parasitization efficiency markedly. While none of the control larvae showed melanized particles, in the groups of single and superparasitized (2× and 4×) hosts a high percentage of melanized particles (capsules and nodules) occurred.  相似文献

The braconid Cotesia plutellae(Kurdjumov) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is amajor solitary, larval endoparasitoid of thediamondback moth, Plutella xylostella(L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae). Parasitism oflarvae of different host instars and fourdevelopmental ages of the 4th instar ofthe pest was examined. The effects of hostinstar at initial parasitization on thedevelopment, survival, size and fecundity ofthe parasitoid were determined in thelaboratory at 25 °C. The effects ofparasitism on host development and foodconsumption were investigated at 28 °C.Cotesia plutellae could parasitize larvaeof all four instars of P. xylostella, butpreferred 2nd and 3rd instars. In achoice test, the relative parasitism indicesfor 2nd, 3rd and 4th instarswere 0.37, 0.39 and 0.24, respectively.Parasitism decreased sharply with increasinghost age in the 4th instar and approachedzero in host larvae that had gone beyond 37%of 4th stadium. The development time andthe final adult size of the parasitoid variedwith the host instar at initial parasitization.Parasitoids with initial parasitism in the4th instar hosts had the shortestdevelopment time, followed by those in the3rd instar, and then by those in the2nd instar. Parasitoids startingparasitism in 2nd instar hosts weresmaller in body size than those starting in the3rd or 4th instar. However, resultantfemales starting parasitism in 3rd instarhosts had the highest fecundity. Parasitizedlarvae exhibited longer development time andincreased food consumption compared withunparasitized ones. This study presents thefirst record that a solitary parasitoidregulates host behavior leading to an increasein food consumption by the host.  相似文献

Studies were conducted to compare preference among Bemisia tabaci Gennadius, biotype B instars for parasitization by Eretmocerus mundus Mercet and Encarsia pergandiella Howard when provided one instar only, two different instars, and four different instars simultaneously. In the single‐instar no choice treatment, Er. mundus was more successful in parasitizing the younger host instars, while En. pergandiella parasitized a greater proportion of the older instars. Similar results were observed when parasitoids were provided a choice of two instars in six different pair combinations. When all four instars were provided simultaneously, the numbers of first, second, and third instars parasitized by Er. mundus were not significantly different from each other (range 10.3–16.4%), but all were significantly higher than parasitism of fourth instar nymphs (2.1%). The highest percentage parasitization by En. pergandiella was in third instar (17.2%), and the lowest in first instar (2.8%).  相似文献
