Locomotion of lizards has clear morphological determinants and is important for developing activities such as feeding, social interaction and predator avoidance. Thus, morphological variation is believed to have fitness consequences through affecting locomotor performance. This paper firstly evaluates the dependence of burst speed on morphology, and secondly examines the movement patterns of free-ranging undisturbed wall lizards ( Podarcis muralis ) engaged in several kinds of activity. Body size was the most important correlate of burst speed as performed at the optimal temperature for running in the laboratory. After removing size effects from performance and morphological traits, the length of some particular limb segments had positive influence on burst speed, but these effects were weak, each trait explaining less than 16% of variance in burst speed. Free-ranging P. muralis exhibited intermittent locomotion, with movement sequences interrupted by frequent short pauses. Field movement patterns greatly differed depending upon the kind of activity and were in most aspects independent of the size and sex of the animal. P. muralis involved in thermoregulation performed short and low-speed displacements; exploratory activities were characterized by frequent, slow and short movements. On the contrary, lizards involved in intraspecific pursuits and predator escape developed comparatively high speeds, although only exceptionally did they attain the size-specific burst speed predicted from the laboratory trials. Speed of escape increased with distance to the refuge and the animals are able to assess predation risks to modulate approach distance, speed and pauses, so maximum exertion is seldom required. The structure of the hybrid zone between the ground crickets, Allonemobius socius and Allonemobius fasciatus , approximates an environmental mosaic based on temperature/moisture at regional spatial scales. In the present study, we show that the micro-geographic spatial structure (i.e. single fields) of this hybrid zone is governed by the same criteria. Thus, the criteria that structure this hybrid zone are scale independent, even though the agents that implement these criteria may differ at various scales (climate, latitude, and elevation at regional scales; grass height, slope aspect, and field use at micro-geographic scales). Distribution records of 152 adult helminth taxa parasites of freshwater fishes in Mexico were analysed to determine areas of high richness and endemism. Distribution maps were prepared for each taxon and overlaid onto a map of Mexico divided into 1 × 1 degree grid-cells. Richness was determined by counting recorded helminth species in each grid-cell. A corrected weighted endemism index was calculated for each grid-cell, and the relationship between richness and endemicity was analysed with an Olmstead–Tukey corner test of association. Five areas of high richness and endemism were identified: (1) Los Tuxtlas and the Papaloapan river basin, on the Gulf of Mexico; (2) the Grijalva-Usumacinta basin near the Gulf of Mexico coastal plain; (3) the Yucatan Peninsula; (4) the Sierra de Manantlán Biosphere Reserve in western Mexico; and (5) the Pátzcuaro lake, in central Mexico. The distribution of richness and endemism of helminth parasites of freshwater fishes in Mexico is congruent with distributional patterns described for other freshwater taxa in Mexico. Patterns of richness and/or endemism in the studied areas can be explained by the ichthyological composition of their bodies of water. The present study establishes an objective way of analysing the relationship between richness and endemicity, and suggests that helminths can make valuable contributions to regionalization of geographical areas and for identification of rich and biologically complex areas with potential for conservation of aquatic systems.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 94 , 435–444.  相似文献

Most ecomorphological studies use a comparative approach to examine adaptation by studying variation among species. A question of considerable interest is whether ecomorphological patterns observed among species also exist at the population level. We studied variation in morphology, performance, and behaviour in four populations of Leiocephalus personatus and two populations of Leiocephalus barahonensis in the Dominican Republic. We combined these data with measurements of predation intensity and habitat structure to test for convergence at the population level. We predicted that predation intensity would be higher in open habitats and that lizards in these habitats would have traits conferring higher predator evasion capacity (increased wariness, faster sprint speeds, and longer limbs). Principal components analysis suggests that sites tend to differ with respect to the abundance and spacing of low-lying vegetation (i.e. percentage of shrub cover and distance to nearest vegetation), but we did not detect any striking differences among sites in tail-break frequencies or attacks on clay lizard models. Consistent with predictions we find that in open habitats, lizards tend to have longer limbs, faster sprint speeds (relative to body size), and longer approach distances. These patterns corroborate findings in other ground-dwelling lizard species and indicate that they have evolved at least twice among populations of Leiocephalus lizards. Patterns of sexual size dimorphism (SSD) and cranial dimorphism are well documented. However, limited examinations exist of the contrasts in the patterns and nature of dimorphism across body regions (e.g. cranium, pelvis), particularly when these regions have different sex-specific functions (e.g. display in mating, locomotion, and reproduction). Using landmark-based morphometric techniques, we investigated size and shape dimorphism variation in the crania and pelves of two closely-related fox species within the genus Urocyon . Although we found no significant size and shape dimorphism in the crania of either species, we did find significant dimorphism in the pelvis: its size was dimorphic in Urocyon littoralis (but not in Urocyon cinereoargenteus ) and its shape was dimorphic in both species (though more pronounced in U. littoralis ). The observation of greater dimorphism in the pelvis than in the cranium suggests that factors such as offspring size and locomotor mode play a greater role in sexual dimorphism than simple 'whole body' allometric affects associated with dimorphism in body size.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 96 , 339–353.  相似文献

Diversification of phytophagous insects is often associated with changes in the use of host taxa and host parts. We focus on a group of newly discovered Neotropical tephritids in the genus Blepharoneura , and report the discovery of an extraordinary number of sympatric, morphologically cryptic species, all feeding as larvae on calyces of flowers of a single functionally dioecious and highly sexually dimorphic host species ( Gurania spinulosa ) in eastern Ecuador. Molecular analyses of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase-I gene from flies reared from flowers of G. spinulosa reveal six distinct haplotype groups that differ by 7.2–10.1% bp (uncorrected pairwise distances; N  = 624 bp). Haplotype groups correspond to six distinct and well-supported clades. Members of five clades specialize on the calyces of flowers of a particular sex: three clades comprise male flower specialists; two clades comprise female flower specialists; the sixth clade comprises generalists reared from male and female flowers. The six clades occupy significantly different morphological spaces defined by wing pigmentation patterns; however, diagnostic morphological characters were not discovered. Behavioural observations suggest specific courtship behaviours may play a role in maintaining reproductive isolation among sympatric species. The puffer Takifugu niphobles is a top predator of hard-shelled prey such as molluscs; its predatory tactics may affect the evolution of prey coloration. Two hypotheses concerning its foraging were tested: (1) T. niphobles shows frequency dependence in foraging colour-polymorphic prey, and (2) such dependence reverses in response to changes in prey distribution. Captive fish were provided with 70 artificial prey, coloured either dark brown or pale brown, at four frequencies (1 : 4, 2 : 3, 3 : 2, 4 : 1) and in two distribution patterns (uniform and aggregated). When prey were uniformly distributed, frequency and feeding rate significantly influenced colour preference: the common morph was consumed more. When prey were aggregated, frequency significantly affected preference only when the feeding rate was low, in which case the rare morph was consumed more. Thus both hypotheses were supported. The jaw adductor musculature in Triassic stem-group sauropterygians is reconstructed on the basis of a paradigmatic model of muscle architecture (functional equivalence of sarcomeres) and using invariant traits of the anatomy of the trigeminal jaw adductor muscles in extant reptiles. The reconstructed jaw adductor musculature predicts trophic specializations in stem-group sauropterygians. Suction feeding is a component in prey capture for some benthic feeding, as well as for some pelagic feeding taxa. The differentiation of 'pincer' jaws is correlated with the potential for rapid, snapping bites. There is some evidence for habitat partitioning among Triassic stem-group sauropterygians with respect to trophic specialization. © 2002 The Linnean Society of London. Natural and sexual selection can have either opposing or synergistic effects on the evolution of traits. In the green swordtail Xiphophorus helleri , sexual selection arising from female choice is known to favour larger males and males with longer swords. We examined variation in male and female size and fin morphology among 15 populations that varied in their predation environments. Males and females from populations in which piscivorous fishes were present had longer and deeper bodies than did males and females from populations in which piscivorous fishes were absent. Controlling for a positive effect of body size on sword length, males from populations in which piscivores were present had relatively shorter swords than did males from populations in which piscivores were absent. The associations between morphology and predation environment may be due to direct effects of predation, indirect effects of predation, other sources of selection that covary with predator presence, or other environmental effects on trait expression. These results suggest that while sexual selection favours longer swords, natural selection may have an opposing effect on sword length in populations with predators. Natural selection on body size, however, may act synergistically with sexual selection in populations with predators; both may favour the evolution of larger body size. A sample of over 400 co-occurring species of Neotropical Hesperiidae attracted to artificial lures was used to test for temporal structure among species and explore potential consequences of temporal partitioning within assemblages. Five years of intermittent transect samples at the same site revealed that diel activity was significantly partitioned among subfamilies, genera and species within this species assemblage. Calculations of reproductive isolation indicate that partitions in activity times are sufficient to provide significant prezygotic reproductive isolation among some congeneric species pairs. Feeding performance (handling time, capture success) in numerous animal species is well known to be influenced by a variety of ecological, functional, and physiological factors. Nonetheless, few studies have tested which factors are the strongest determinants of animal feeding performance in the wild. Using a field-based experiment, we examined the relationships among a number of functionally important variables and the predatory behaviour of free-ranging pit-vipers ( Ovophis okinavensis ) from Okinawa Island, Japan. Our main findings were: (1) strike latency was negatively related to snake body temperature and, hence, hotter snakes struck at frogs more readily than colder snakes; (2) initial bite position was correlated with ingestion direction (headfirst versus hindfirst) but ingestion direction was not correlated with ingestion duration; and (3) both snake head length and body temperature were negatively related with ingestion duration and, thus, snakes with longer heads and higher body temperatures had shorter ingestion durations. In O. okinavensis , head size and body temperature are therefore likely to have direct ecological consequences in terms of its feeding rate on explosively breeding frogs. The so-called 'mimic octopuses' of tropical Indonesia are reputed to mimic up to 13 species of other local marine organisms. We tested for mimicry by allowing individuals of two species of octopus to habituate to divers, then observing and filming two species continuously as they foraged daily in the same open, featureless volcanic sand habitat. Mimicry of a local, abundant flounder occurred commonly during 5 days of natural foraging: nearly 500 episodes were analysed. Both octopus species mimicked the shape, swimming actions, speed, duration, and sometimes the coloration of swimming flounders. During flounder mimicry, octopuses were actively moving and conspicuous, whereas immediately before and after flounder mimicry, they were camouflaged and motionless (sitting or very slowly crawling). Furthermore, when motionless, octopuses assumed body patterns and postures that resembled small sponges, tube-worm tubes, or colonial tunicates, which were among the few objects in the open sand habitat. The key finding was that octopuses used flounder mimicry only when their movement would give away camouflage in this open habitat. In all cases, octopuses used mimicry as a primary defense. Several interactions with fishes and stomatopods were filmed and typical secondary defense behaviours, not mimicry, were used by the octopuses. Foraging occurred twice per day and two tactile feeding tactics were used. Dens and food were not limiting; thus, we observed a highly unusual circumstance of a guild of small, long-armed octopus species that shared the same habitat, den sources, food, activity period, and some behaviours.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 93 , 23–38.  相似文献

Fishes are the most speciose group of vertebrates, with more than 24 000 species. They are characterized by great diversity in ecology, morphology, life history, behaviour and physiology. Here, the phylogenetic patterns of orders in which polyploidy has been recorded are considered, with special reference to patterns of species richness and hybridization: these orders include such phylogenetically diverse taxa as the Lepidosireniformes (lungfish) and the Perciformes (perch). Examples, predominantly drawn from the Cyprinidae and Salmonidae, are used to illustrate attributes of polyploidy in fishes. Potential prey are often exposed to multiple predators that vary in their foraging tactics and ability to detect prey. For animals that rely on crypsis to avoid predators, one solution is to alter their behaviour or appearance to maximize crypsis in ways that are specific to different types of predator. We tested whether dwarf chameleons ( Bradypodion transvaalense ) showed different behavioural responses, including colour change, towards multiple predators (bird and snake models) that detect and capture prey in different ways, and whether these antipredator responses varied geographically. Chameleons consistently used the same body postures (lateral compression and flipping to the opposite side of the branch) and displayed similar chromatic (colour) contrast against the natural background in response to both predator types. However, they became significantly more achromatically contrasting (brighter) in the presence of the snake compared to the bird. This relative difference in achromatic contrast towards the two types of predator was consistent among populations. There were also significant differences in both absolute achromatic and chromatic contrast among populations despite very similar light environment, background coloration and habitat structure. Zygophyseter varolai , a new genus and species of Physeteroidea (Cetacea, Odontoceti), is based on an almost complete skeleton from the Late Miocene (Tortonian) in southern Italy. The extreme elongation of the zygomatic process of the squamosal and the circular supracranial basin (probably for housing the spermaceti organ) delimited by a peculiar anterior projection of the supraorbital process of the right maxilla are the most distinctive features of this bizarre sperm whale. Large body size, large teeth present in both lower and upper jaw, and anteroposteriorly elongated temporal fossa and zygomatic process of the squamosal indicate that this cetacean (for which we suggest the English common name killer sperm whale) was an active predator adapted to feeding on large prey, similarly to the extant killer whale ( Orcinus orca ). A phylogenetic analysis reveals that Zygophyseter belongs to a Middle–Late Miocene clade of basal physeteroids, together with Naganocetus (new genus for the type of ' Scaldicetus ' shigensis ). Teleost fishes display a remarkable diversity of adult dentitions; this diversity is all the more remarkable in light of the uniformity of first-generation dentitions. Few studies have quantitatively documented the transition between generalized first-generation dentitions and specialized adult dentitions in teleosts. We investigated this transition in the Mexican tetra, Astyanax mexicanus (Characidae), by measuring aspects of the dentition in an ontogenetic series of individuals from embryos to 160 days old, in addition to adults of unknown age. The first-generation dentition and its immediate successors consist of small, unicuspid teeth that develop extraosseously. Multicuspid teeth first appear during the second tooth replacement event, and are derived from single tooth germs, rather than from the fusion of multiple conical tooth germs. We document that the transition from unicuspid to multicuspid teeth corresponds to a change in the location of developing tooth germs (from extraosseous to intraosseous) and in patterns of tooth replacement (from haphazard to simultaneous within a jaw quadrant). The ability of Perciform fishes to protrude their jaw has likely been critical to the trophic diversification of this group, which includes approximately 20% of all vertebrates. The length of the ascending process of the premaxilla is thought to influence the maximum extent that cichlids and other Perciforms protrude their oral jaw. Using a combination of morphometrics, kinematics, and new phylogenetic hypotheses for 20 Heroine cichlid species, we tested the evolutionary relationship between the length of the premaxillary ascending process and maximum jaw protrusion. In this clade, the length of the ascending process of the premaxilla ranged from 11.6–32.7% with respect to standard length whereas maximum jaw protrusion ranged from 3.5–23.4% with respect to standard length. The evolutionary relationships among the Heroine cichlids obtained from the genetic partitions cytochrome b, S7, and RAG1 showed limited concordance. However, correlations between the length of the ascending process and maximum jaw protrusion were highly significant when examined as independent contrasts using all three topologies. Within the catfish family Clariidae, species exist with different degrees of jaw adductor hypertrophy. This jaw adductor hypertrophy has been related to bite performance, in turn suggesting a link to dietary specialization. Thus, an increase in the degree of hypertrophy will likely be reflected in an increase in the amount of hard prey in the diet. In the present study, we examine the ontogenetic scaling of cranial structure and diet in a species of catfish with a moderate degree of jaw adductor hypertrophy, Clariallabes longicauda . Additionally, we investigate whether the observed changes in the morphology of the feeding system during growth are linked to changes in diet. The fish examined demonstrate a strong positively allometric growth of the jaw adductors, of head height and of maximal head width, suggesting that larger fish can feed on larger and harder prey. Dietary data confirm these hypotheses and reveal an increase in maximal prey size consumed, the proportion of large prey in the diet, and average prey hardness during ontogeny. Moreover, the observed changes in the proportion of large prey consumed and prey hardness are correlated with an increase in lower jaw width and maximal head width, respectively. An increase in the amount of evasive prey in the diet with fish size is correlated with an increase in hyoid length. Vicariant geographic isolation and resource partitioning have long been independently identified as processes contributing to the morphological divergence of closely-related species. However, little is known about the extent to which vicariant history influences the adaptive ecological divergence associated with resource partitioning and trophic specialization within species. The present study thus quantified the contribution of vicariant historical genetic divergence to the adaptive contemporary morphological divergence of intraspecific feeding specialists in the Rainbow smelt (Pisces: Osmerus mordax ). This species is characterized by the polyphyletic origin of two lacustrine feeding specialists originating in two intraspecific lineages associated with independent glacial refuges. The historical genetic segregation was initiated approximately 350 000 years ago, whereas the lacustrine trophic segregation arose within the past 10 000 years. Wild caught lacustrine smelt populations were grouped a priori based on known historical genetic identities (Acadian and Atlantic mitochondrial DNA clades) and contemporary feeding specializations (microphageous and macrophageous morphotypes). The present study demonstrated that independent suites of correlated morphological traits are associated with either vicariant history or contemporary feeding specializations. Second, functionally-similar feeding specialists exhibit distinct morphologies resulting largely from vicariant historical processes. Although, the evolutionary processes producing historical phenotypes remains unknown, the results obtained demonstrate how adaptive radiation associated with ecological resource partitioning and feeding specializations can be strongly influenced by intraspecific phenotypic diversification resulting from relatively recent vicariant histories.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 97 , 140–151.  相似文献
