Psyttalia lounsburyi (Silvestri) and P. humilis (Silvestri) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) were evaluated in California for their potential to control the invasive olive fruit
fly, Bactrocera oleae (Rossi) (Diptera: Tephritidae). Psyttalia lounsburyi is a specialist on B. oleae while P. humilis also attacks other tephritid species. Field cage trials, conducted from 2006 to 2009, were used to compare P. lounsburyi and two populations of P. humilis (Kenya and Namibia) in California’s interior valley and coastal regions. Both parasitoid species reproduced on B. oleae in all trials. Under similar abiotic conditions, offspring production per female was higher in P. humilis than in P. lounsburyi, suggesting that host specificity by P. lounsburyi does not confer a higher efficiency on B. oleae in cultivated olives. Two abiotic factors were shown to impact parasitoid efficiency. First, adult parasitoid survival was
poor during periods of high summer temperatures, common to the olive production areas in California’s interior valleys. Second,
parasitism levels were lower on B. oleae larvae feeding in larger Ascolano cv. fruit than in smaller Manzanillo cv. fruit. Results are discussed relative to biological control of B. oleae in commercial olives and the usefulness of natural enemies specialized to attack fruit flies in wild olives compared with

Long-term separation of a host from its native parasitoids may result in divergent thermal adaptation between host and parasitoid. The olive fruit fly, Bactrocera oleae (Rossi), most likely originated from Sub-Saharan Africa, but has since had a long invasion history in cultivated olives that spans geographical barriers and continents. This study compared three major thermal performance profiles (development, survival, and reproduction) across a wide range of temperatures (10–34 °C) among a Californian population of the olive fruit fly and two African parasitoids, Psyttalia lounsburyi (Silvestri) and Psyttalia humilis (Silvestri), believed to have co-adapted with the fruit fly in its native range. Temperature ranges for the development and survival were 10–30 °C for the fly, 10–28 °C for P. lounsburyi, and 14–32 °C for P. humilis. There was no difference in any thermal performance measured between two P. humilis populations (Kenya and Namibia) tested. The most suitable temperature ranges for reproduction were 22–30 °C for the fly, 18–32 °C for P. humilis, and 18–26 °C for P. lounsburyi. The results showed slight differences in the thermal profiles among olive fruit fly and both parasitoids species, with P. humilis being more heat tolerant whereas P. lounsburyi was less heat tolerant than the fruit fly. The olive fruit fly, Bactrocera oleae (Tephritidae), is a significant threat to California's olive industry. As part of a classical biological control program started in 2002, the parasitoids Diachasmimorpha kraussii and D. longicaudata (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) were imported to California from laboratory colonies in Hawaii. Studies on their biology and behavior as parasitoids of the olive fruit fly were conducted in quarantine. Both species tend to oviposit into 2nd and young 3rd instars, with the offspring completing development in the flies’ puparia. Most eggs are deposited in the first two weeks of adult life. Observed lifetime fecundity was low, possibly as a consequence of the relatively poor quality of the harvested olives used as a host substrate. Both pre-imaginal development and adult longevity were limited at constant temperatures above 30°C, which may indicate that these species will have difficulty establishing in the warmest regions of California. 相似文献

Efforts to control the olive fruit fly, Bactrocera oleae (Diptera: Tephritidae), in California have focused on insecticidal baits and biological control by parasitoids, which primarily target the adult and larval stages, respectively. The pupal stage, which occurs in the soil, has largely been overlooked. This study investigated mortality factors for olive fruit fly pupae in California olive orchards, using a combination of exclusion experiments and observation and trapping of potential predators. Results show predation and climatic factors contribute to pupal mortality. Ants (Formicidae) were the most numerous predators observed. Soil-borne pathogens caused no mortality in this study. Potential applications of these results in the development of a sustainable management program are discussed. 相似文献

A growing body of literature reports the importance of non-prey food sources in boosting fitness of arthropod natural enemies, thus further contributing to their pest control efficacy. Although resources such as nectar, pollen, or honeydew have received a fair amount of research attention, little is known about the role of fruit juices. Under natural conditions, Tephritid fruit fly parasitoids enjoy ample access to fallen or damaged fruits and their saccharide-rich juices, and wasp fitness can potentially benefit in multiple ways from access to these resources. In this study, we compared the effect of fruit juice with other food resources on multiple fitness parameters in parasitoids that commonly forage on fallen, damaged fruits: the braconid Diachasmimorpha longicaudata and figitid Aganaspis pelleranoi. Parasitoids were subject to simple or combined diets of guava juice (Psidium guajava), honey and pollen, and their effect on wasp longevity, ovarian dynamics and (body) carbohydrate levels was assessed. For both species, adult longevity proved lowest on simple diets of water, guava juice, or pollen, while greatest longevity was attained on honey or combined diets. For D. longicaudata, egg load did not differ between the various diets, while A. pelleranoi egg load was higher for individuals that had access to honey or pollen, but did not differ between newly emerged wasps and those fed guava juice. In both parasitoid species, total sugars, fructose, and glycogen levels were highest in wasps fed with honey or combined diets and lowest under (simple) guava juice, pollen, or water diets. In conclusion, D. longicaudata and A. pelleranoi attained superior longevity and body nutrient levels with access to high-sucrose sugar sources, such as honey, but benefited comparatively little from access to guava juice. Our work hints the role of high-sucrose foods such as (extra-) floral nectar or artifical sugar sprays in boosting fitness of fruit fly parasitoids. Courtship behavior in Drosophila has often been described as a classic innate behavioral repertoire, but more recently extensive plasticity has been described. In particular, prior exposure to acoustic signals of con‐ or heterspecific males can change courtship traits in both sexes that are liable to be important in reproductive isolation. However, it is unknown whether male courtship song itself is socially plastic. We examined courtship song plasticity of two species in the Drosophila melanogaster subgroup. Sexual isolation between the species is influenced by two male song traits, the interpulse interval (IPI) and sinesong frequency (SSF). Neither of these showed plasticity when males had prior experience of con‐ and heterospecific social partners. However, males of both species produced longer bursts of song during courtship when they were exposed to social partners (either con‐ or heterospecific) than when they were reared in isolation. D. melanogaster carrying mutations affecting short‐ or medium‐term memory showed a similar response to the social environment, not supporting a role for learning. Our results demonstrate that the amount of song a male produces during courtship is plastic depending on the social environment, which might reflect the advantage of being able to respond to variation in intrasexual competition, but that song structure itself is relatively inflexible, perhaps due to strong selection against hybridization. 相似文献

Ovarian maturation was prevented in 7-, 22-, 23- and 28-day-old females of Dacus oleae (Gmelin) (Diptera: Tephritidae), developed in the pre-imaginal stages at LD 12:12, 19±1°C and kept as adults at LD 16:8, 26±1°C without access to olive fruits. In females of the above ages having continuous access to olive fruits and held under the same photoperiod and temperature conditions, 54, 87 and 100%, respectively, had mature oocytes. When the females had access to domes of paraffin wax, the percentages of females with mature oocytes were intermediate between those with and those without access to olive fruits. Under the above photoperiod and temperature conditions unfavorable for maturation, 50% of 4-week-old females had mature oocytes if exposed for one week to olive fruits during their first week and 91% if exposed during their 4th week of adult life. The respective percentages with wax domes in the cages were again intermediate between those with olives and those without olives or wax domes. The presence of olive fruits had also a strong positive effect on the ovarian maturation of females which developed from egg through the adult stage at LD 16:8, 26±1°C, a condition favoring ovarian maturation. Access to wax domes had again an intermediate effect on maturation. It is concluded therefore that the lack of ovarian maturation of D. oleae females which is observed under a short photophase during the pre-imaginal stages if followed by a long photophase and an increase of temperature during the adult stage, continues at least till the end of the 4th week of adult life in the absence of olive fruits but is averted when such fruits are offered to the adult flies.
Résumé La maturation ovarienne des femelles adultes agées de 7, 22–23 et 28 jours de D. oleae ayant accompli leur développement embryonnaire, larvaire et nymphal en LD 12:12, 19±1°C et maintenues en LD 16:8, 26±1°C, sans accès à des olives, est inhibée. Dans les mêmes conditions, mais avec accès permanent à des olives, 54% des femelles ont des ovocytes mûrs à 7 jours, 87% à 22–23 jours et 100% à 28 jours. Avec des femelles ayant accès à des domes de paraffine, les pourcentages d'individus ayant des ovocytes mûrs sont intermédiaires entre ceux des deux situations précédentes. Dans les conditions cidessus défavorables à la maturation ovarienne, 50% des femelles de 28 jours ont des ovocytes mûrs si elles sont en présence d'olives durant leur première semaine de vie imaginale et 91% si elles sont en présence la 4éme semaine. Les pourcentages respectifs concernant les femelles pourvues de dômes de paraffine sont encore intermédiaires entre ceux des femelles avec olives et ceux de femelles privées de tout substrat. La présence d'olives a aussi un effet fortement positif sur la maturation ovarienne de femelles ayant accompli leur développement pre-imaginal et maintenues aussi à l'etat adulte en conditions LD 16:8, 26±1°C, favorisant la maturation ovarienne. L'accès à des dômes de paraffine a, là encore, un effet intermédiaire. On conclut par conséquent que la non maturation ovarienne des femelles de D. oleae qui est causée par une photopériode à jour court pendant la vie pre-imaginale accompagné par une photopériode à jour long et une augmentation de la température pendant la vie imaginale persiste au moins jusqu'à la fin de la quatrième semaine de la vie imaginale en absence d'olives, mais ne se produit pas si on met les femelles adultes en présence d'olives.相似文献

Olive fruit fly is a key pest of olive and consequently a serious threat to olive fruit and oil production throughout the Mediterranean region. With the establishment of Bactrocera oleae in California a decade ago, interest was renewed in classical (introduction) biological control of the pest. Here we discuss the prospects of identifying natural enemies of B. oleae in Africa and Asia that may help reduce B. oleae populations in California and elsewhere. Based on the current understanding of Bactrocera phylogenetics, early opinions that B. oleae originated in Africa or western Asia rather than the Mediterranean region or the Near East are taxonomically and ecologically supportable. Closely related to cultivated olive, the wild olive Olea europaea cuspidata is widely distributed in southern and eastern Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and eastwards into Asia as far as southwestern China. Little is known regarding the biology and ecology of B. oleae in Africa and eastern Asia, especially in wild olives. While the diversity of parasitoids of B. oleae in the Mediterranean region is low and unspecialized, a diverse assemblage of parasitoids is known from B. oleae in Africa. Ubiquitin signaling pathways rely on E3 ligases for effecting the final transfer of ubiquitin from E2 ubiquitin conjugating enzymes to a protein target. Here we re-evaluate the hybrid RING/HECT mechanism used by the E3 family RING-between-RINGs (RBRs) to transfer ubiquitin to substrates. We place RBRs into the context of current knowledge of HECT and RING E3s. Although not as abundant as the other types of E3s (there are only slightly more than a dozen RBR E3s in the human genome), RBRs are conserved in all eukaryotes and play important roles in biology. Re-evaluation of RBR ligases as RING/HECT E3s provokes new questions and challenges the field. 相似文献

The functional activities of the photosynthetic apparatus of two grapevine genotypes (Vitis vinifera L. cvs. Müller-Thurgau and Lagrein) were investigated after low night temperature (LNT) treatment for 7 d. LNT caused important
reductions of the net photosynthetic rate (PN) of Lagrein plants due to non-stomatal components. These non-stomatal effects were not evident in Müller-Thurgau. At LNT
treatment, the contents of photosynthetic pigments decreased significantly in Lagrein, but in Müller-Thurgau the contents
of chlorophyll (Chl) remained unchanged whereas the contents of carotenoids (Car) increased. An increase and decrease of Chl
a/b was shown in Mü ller-Thurgau and Lagrein stressed plants, respectively. RuBPC activity and content of soluble proteins were
also significantly reduced in Lagrein. Under LNT treatment, photosystem (PS) 2 was markedly more inhibited in Lagrein than
in Müller-Thurgau. The decrease in PS 2 activity in Lagrein was mostly due to the marked loss of D1, 47, 43, 33, 28-25, 23

A dose-response relationship was not observed in olive fruit fly, Bactrocera oleae (Gmelin), larvae exposed to acetic acid concentrations (0-2.5%) used in commercial brine solutions to cure olives. Immersion in a 1% acetic acid brine solution impeded emergence of the immature stages. A 1-wk exposure of olives infested with olive fruit fly larvae to low-temperature storage as a postharvest treatment at 0-1 degree C resulted in 8% survival of the population, and exposures of 2 through 5 wk further reduced pupal and adult emergence to <1.0%. One- to 2-wk exposures at 2-3 degrees C resulted in a significant decrease in survival from 20 to 3%, respectively, and longer durations of 3-5 wk reduced survival to <1.0%. Mean daily fruit pulp temperatures in olives in the top, middle, and bottom of plastic bins stored at 2-3 degrees C decreased by 5-8 degrees C from the first to the second day. Lowest temperatures were observed in the top, and highest temperatures were observed in the middle layer of fruit, which attained a mean temperature of 3.8 degrees C on day 5. Laboratory choice tests showed that olive fruit fly oviposited at a higher rate in late season Mission olives that were green than in fruit that were in the red blush maturity stage in tests with 1- and 3-4-d exposure periods, and an increase in duration of exposure was related to an increase in the total number of ovipositional sites. Higher percentages of olive fruit fly third instars, pupae, and adults were reared from green fruit than from fruit in the red blush stage after a 1-d exposure to oviposition. Manzanillo olives were more attractive for oviposition by olive fruit fly than Mission olives, and significantly more third instars, pupae, and adults developed in Manzanillo fruit than in Mission fruit in the red blush stage. These differences were related to the better quality and higher flesh content of the Manzanillo versus Mission olives used in the tests. 相似文献

A series of laboratory experiments was conducted on a colony of Bracon celer Szépligeti (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) reared on the olive fly, Bactrocera oleae (Rossi) (Diptera: Tephritidae). Female B. celer preferentially probe and oviposit into olives containing late third-instar fly larvae. The parasitoid develops as a solitary, ectoparasitic idiobiont. Mean development time (oviposition to adult eclosion) at 22 °C was, for females, 36±1 (SE) days, and for males, 34±1 days. The mean longevity of adult female wasps when provided honey and water was significantly greater than when they were provided water alone, or nothing. The females produced an average of 9.7±7.2 progeny during their lifetimes, but production levels in the insectary colony suggested that this level of fecundity was artificially low and could be improved. The discrepancy may be a consequence of constraints on oviposition behavior imposed by the experimental design. The results are discussed with respect to insectary production methods and the potential use of B. celer as a biological control agent for olive fly in California. 相似文献

Indirect effects, which occur when the impact of one species upon another requires the existence of an intermediary species,
are apparently very common and may be of greater magnitude than direct effects. Behaviorally mediated indirect effects occur
when one species affects the behavior of a second, which in turn affects how that species interacts with a third. I studied
behaviorally mediated indirect effects on the mechanisms of competition in two congeneric fire ant species in the presence
and absence of parasitoid phorid flies, which parasitized only one ant species. In observational and experimental field studies,
the presence of native Texas phorid flies in the genus Pseudacteon decreased food retrieval by their host, Solenopsis geminata (F.), by as much as 50%. In the presence of phorid flies, many S. geminata workers assumed a stationary, curled defensive posture and did not forage. Although the phorid parasitoids had a relatively
large effect on exploitative competition, there was no measurable effect on interference competition. Fierce interspecific
aggression was observed between S. geminata and S. invicta Buren, and the presence of phorids had no effect on the outcome of these contests. The indirect effects of Pseudacteon parasitoids on Solenopsis fire ant resource retrieval appear to be larger than the direct effect of mortality. Some aspects of the foraging behavior
of these Solenopsis species may be, in part, evolutionary adaptations to phorid parasitoid pressure. Because of the relatively large indirect
effects, South American Pseudacteon phorids may be promising biocontrol agents of imported fire ants, S. invicta, in the USA. In a laboratory study, a single South American Pseudacteon female was able to significantly decrease food retrieval rates of a North American population of the imported fire ant, S. invicta.

Females of the olive fruit fly Bactrocera oleae lay their eggs in olives mainly using fruit volatile stimuli. Using GC-MS analysis, we determined the chemical composition of the volatile blend emitted from field-collected olive fruit of cv. Megaritiki, at different stages of maturity. GC-MS analysis demonstrated qualitative and quantitative differences in the headspace blend emitted by the olive fruit. Certain chemicals such as toluene, n-octane, α-pinene, limonene, ethyl hexanol, nonanal n-dodecane, decanal and n-tetradecane were detected in greater amounts, irrespective of the growth stage of the fruit. The flies’ exposure to a number of these chemicals, such as n-octane and α-pinene, as well as to a mixture consisting of n-octane, α-pinene, limonene, ethyl hexanol, nonanal, n-dodecane, decanal and n–tetradecane favoured successful mating and egg production. The results may contribute to the improvement of the mass rearing of the fly, through these findings, which illustrate the positive effect that certain fruit volatile chemicals have on the fly's reproduction and offer a better understanding of the relation between the fly and the host fruit. 相似文献

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate a clear connection between the presence of acetone in larval diet and alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) activity in laboratory raised populations of Bactrocera oleae. ADH activity of B. oleae is depressed in acetone-impregnated diets. At the same time the change of activity is accompanied by a change in the relative proportions of the multiple forms of ADH. The bulk of activity in the most cathodally migrating form is lost, and all the activity becomes localized in the less cathodally migrating forms of the enzyme. Moreover, ADH activity, expressed in vivo, appears to drop after exposure to acetone, as shown by the fact that larvae become less sensitive to pentenol poisoning. Our results show clear selective differences imposed by acetone on three homozygous genotypes involving the ADH alleles F, S and I in B. oleae. The directions of these differences were found to vary with the fitness component under test. Acetone treatment seems to affect developmental time and larva's viability as well as allele frequencies of ADH under artificial rearing. The effect of acetone on the maintenance of ADH polymorphism in artificially reared populations of B. oleae is further discussed. 相似文献

A molecular approach was used to investigate the fungal microbiome associated with Bactrocera oleae a major key pest of Olea europea, using the ITS2 region of the ribosomal DNA (rDNA) as barcode gene. Amplicons were cloned and a representative number of sequenced fragments were used as barcode genes for the identification of fungi. The analysis of the detected sequence types (STs) enabled the identification of a total of 34 phylotypes which were associated with 10 fungal species, 3 species complexes and 8 genera. Three phylotypes remained unresolved within the order Saccharomycetales and the phylum Ascomycota because of the lack of closely related sequences in GenBank. Cladosporium was the most abundantly detected genus, followed by Alternaria and Aureobasidium, well-known components of olive sooty moulds. Interestingly, Colletotrichum sp. and other fungal plant pathogens were also detected, leading to potential new insights into heir epidemiology. 相似文献
