Ascophyllum nodosum L. dominates rocky intertidal shores throughout the temperate North Atlantic. Six microsatellite loci were developed for A. nodosum using enriched libraries. The number of alleles ranged from 9 to 24 and heterozygosities from 0.2213 to 0.7785. Ascophyllum is monotypic. There was no cross‐reactivity observed with Fucus serratus, F. vesiculosus or F. evanescens.  相似文献

Anti‐herbivory defenses support persistence of seaweeds. Little is known, however, about temporal dynamics in the induction of grazer‐deterrent seaweed traits. In two induction experiments, consumption rates of the periwinkle Littorina obtusata (L.) on the brown seaweed Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jolis were measured in 3‐d intervals. Changes in palatability of directly grazed A. nodosum were tested every 3 d with feeding assays using fresh and reconstituted seaweed pieces. Likewise, assays with fresh A. nodosum assessed changes in seaweed palatability in response to water‐borne cues from nearby grazed conspecifics. Consumption rates of L. obtusata varied significantly during the 27‐d induction phase of each experiment. Direct grazing by L. obtusata lowered palatability of fresh and reconstituted A. nodosum pieces to conspecific grazers after 15 d as well as after 6 and 12 d, respectively. After 12, 18, and 24 d, fresh A. nodosum located downstream of L. obtusata‐grazed conspecifics was significantly less palatable than A. nodosum located downstream of ungrazed conspecifics. Changes in L. obtusata consumption rates and A. nodosum palatability during both induction experiments suggest temporal variation of grazer‐deterrent responses, which may complicate experimental detection of inducible anti‐herbivory defenses.  相似文献

Aim Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jolis is a dominant fucoid seaweed occurring along sheltered, rocky shores throughout the North Atlantic (but not in the Pacific), where it is a foundational species of the intertidal community. Its large size and vulnerability to ice‐scour have led to the hypothesis that contemporary populations in the north‐west Atlantic may be the result of de novo recolonization from the north‐east Atlantic since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) (c. 20 ka). We tested this hypothesis. Location Temperate North Atlantic rocky intertidal between c. 42 and 65° N latitude. Methods More than 1300 individuals from 28 populations were sampled from across the entire range of A. nodosum and genotyped for six microsatellite loci, and > 500 individuals were genotyped for two mitochondrial loci, an intergenic spacer (IGS) and the tRNA (W) gene (trnW). Population structure and historical demography were analysed in a standard population genetics and coalescence framework. Results Based on the presence of private alleles and haplotypes, we found that A. nodosum has survived on both sides of the Atlantic (since before the LGM, dating back to at least the penultimate Eemian interglacial) with similar effective population sizes and divergence times (1.2 and 0.8 Ma). Dispersal has been predominantly from Europe to North America, and there is very weak present‐day population differentiation across the North Atlantic. Diversity measures provided additional support for determining the location of refugia. Main conclusions Ascophyllum nodosum was apparently little affected by the LGM, although contemporary climate change is likely to have major effects on its latitudinal distribution on both sides of the North Atlantic. It is a very long‐lived species, analogous in virtually all demographic aspects to a tree – resistant to extinction but vulnerable to catastrophic events. The Brittany peninsula is a hotspot of genetic diversity worthy of conservation.  相似文献

This paper presents evidence from an initial trial in favor of claims that the liquid seaweed extract of Ascophyllum nodosum, marketed in the UK as Maxicrop, can reduce numbers of the two-spotted red spider mite Tetranychus urticae on crop plants. Seven applications of Maxicrop Triple over 20 days significantly suppressed the population build-up of two-spotted red spider mites on treated strawberry plants (Fragaria sp. var. Redgauntlet) raised under high polythene tunnels as compared to untreated controls.  相似文献

Spatial variation in polyphenolic content in annual shoots of the brown alga Ascophyllum nodosum was quantified using a hierarchical sampling design. Three sampling levels, covering distances of 100–106 m, were used. Comparisons were made between two areas, Tjärnö on the Swedish west-coast and the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea, with very different types of environmental conditions. No significant differences in mean polyphenolic levels were found between the two study areas (6.6% of dry mass at Tjärnö and 9.2% at the Isle of Man), whereas significant and substantial differences were found among sites within areas (range 5.7%–11.4%) and among quadrats within sites (range 3.7%–13.1 %). The extensive variation at the smaller spatial scales points out the importance of using thorough sampling procedures at all levels in large-scale studies on algal polyphenolics, e.g. biogeographical comparisons, which have been neglected in several previous studies. Moreover, the results imply that experiments on causal factors of polyphenolic variation should be designed to explain the spatial scales on which the factors are impportant. This study also investigated the relationship between polyphenolic concentration and both plant size and mean area of annual shoots. The mean area was used as an estimate of the mean growth rate of the annual shoots within an individual. No significant relationships were found between shoot growth rate, or plant size, and polyphenolic levels in annual shoots at any of the three spatial scales that were investigated.  相似文献

Vanadium-dependent peroxidase activity in extracts of Ascophyllum nodosum growing in the intertidal region close to Roscoff/France, and algal vanadium levels, followed approximately similar seasonal variation, as deduced from a study lasting from April 2005 to March 2006. High peroxidase (PO) activity was found in extracts obtained from algae collected in between midwinter to spring [∼100-190 U per g dry mass (dm), triiodide assay] with a maximum in April. Periods of reduced PO activity lasted from summer to early winter (∼50-90 U per g dm). High vanadium levels (1.5-2.2 mg kg−1 dm) were found in algae collected from midwinter to spring, whereas reduced levels (0.6-1.4 mg kg−1 dm) were found in summer to early winter.  相似文献

Treatment of Arabidopsis thaliana plants with a commercially-available, alkaline extract of the marine brown alga, Ascophyllum nodosum, resulted in a significant decrease in the number of females of the root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne javanica, which developed in the roots compared to those of plants grown in a water control medium. Significant reductions in egg recovery were also achieved from plants treated with the seaweed extract. Similar effects were produced when betaine components of the seaweed extract (γ-aminobutyric acid betaine, δ-aminovaleric acid betaine and glycinebetaine) were used in quantities equivalent to those applied in the seaweed extract treatment. As the experiments were conducted under monoxenic conditions, it can be concluded that the results obtained with the application of either the seaweed extract or betaines are indicative of their effects on the plants and are not dependent on microorganisms associated with the rhizosphere. Ireland has a long history of seaweed utilisation, with accounts of its use as a food dating to at least the twelfth century. Arramara Teoranta (literally “Seagoods Ltd.”) was established by the Irish Government in the late 1940s to continue the long tradition of sustainable seaweed harvesting in the west of Ireland, which began with kelp ash production from kelp kilns around 1700 and which continued sporadically until 1948. Initially, Arramara purchased dried sea rods (Laminaria hyperborea) and kelp fronds (mostly Saccharina latissima) and these were exported for alginate production in Scotland. Kelps were gradually replaced by Ascophyllum nodosum, a perennial wrack found in the intertidal of the North Atlantic and which is particularly common on sheltered shores in the west of Ireland. This wrack has been cut sustainably by hand in Ireland since at least the late 1940s. Figures for annual production from the main purchaser, Arramara, show that 2,000–7,000 dry weight tons (about 8,000–28,000 wet tons) have been cut in Ireland each year from 1964 to date. Whilst exports for alginate production ceased in 2009, 5,000–6,000 dry weight tons are currently being produced for the animal feed, horticulture, aquaculture, and cosmetics markets.  相似文献

Wether lambs (n = 27, average BW = 40 kg) were used to test response to forage treated with Tasco-Forage (an extract of the brown kelp Ascophyllum nodosum) prior to conserving, or to direct feeding of the extract (Tasco-EX). Hays made from endophyte (Neoyphodium coenophialum)-infested tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea)-based pasture received 0 or 3 kg of Tasco/ha prior to harvest. Lambs, blocked by weight, were randomly allotted to three diets: (1) control hay, (2) treated hay, and (3) #1 + Tasco-EX fed at 1% of the diet. Hays were low in CP (<7%) so all lambs were fed soybean meal (12% of the diet) in addition to trace mineralized salt. Diets were fed at 1.5% BW to prevent refusals. Total collections (7 d) were made during periods without or with applied heat stress. After each period, rumen contents were obtained to determine pH, NH3 and VFA. Lambs were sacrificed post-trial. A subset was used to evaluate sensory traits and muscle fatty acids. Lambs were in negative N balance during the study and Tasco treatments did not affect N metabolism. Fecal N tended (P < 0.10) to increase with short duration heat stress causing a concomitant decrease (P < 0.05) in apparent N digestibility (58.6 versus 56.1%; S.E. = 0.7). Urinary N loss decreased (P < 0.001) with heat stress (8.0 versus 5.9 g/d; S.E. = 0.2), resulting in increased (P < 0.001) N retention (−2.1 versus −0.3 g/d; S.E. = 0.2). Apparent OM digestibility was not affected by heat stress but was greater (P < 0.05) for lambs fed Tasco-EX treatment than those fed treated hay. Treatment diets decreased (P < 0.05) ruminal butyrate. Heat stress increased (P < 0.05) acetate and total VFA and decreased (P < 0.01) ruminal pH. A tendency (P < 0.11) of increased 14:1ω5, decreased (P < 0.05) 18:0 and total saturated fatty acids in muscle was observed with Tasco diets. Meat sensory characteristics were not affected by treatment. Tasco may alter some aspects of rumen or lipid metabolism but has no effect on N metabolism or meat sensory characteristics of sheep fed restricted, low-quality diets.  相似文献

Although populations ofAscophyllum nodosum are harvested commercially, little is known about the effects on demographic vital rates (growth, reproduction, survival). This study examines the effects of harvesting season and harvesting intensity on growth, reproduction and mortality of intact fronds in four size classes and in fronds truncated by the harvest. Knowledge of size-specific vital rates was used to evaluate the response of the population to harvesting.Harvesting season and harvesting intensity did not exert a significant effect on growth. Growth in plots not subject to harvesting was less than in harvested plots. No major differences in growth, reproduction and survival between intact and severed fronds emerged. The number of fronds attaining reproduction was enhanced by increased harvesting intensity and by cutting in summer. Harvesting did not seem to induce breakage, and breakage appeared higher in the uncut plots. Most harvesting treatments did not influence survivorship and survivorship was similar among all size classes. Growth rates were inversely related to sizes of fronds.Assessment of variation across size classes yielded more accurate estimates of growth rates than those of previously used methods. Accurate size class specific-growth rates will be a useful criterion when regulating intervals between harvests. Furthermore, assessment of size-specific vital rates allows identification of the frond size classes most relevant to the preservation of resources. Because of their fast growth rates and abundance, fronds in class 1, and, to a lesser extent, class 2, are responsible for most of the population regrowth after harvest. In contrast, classes 3 and 4 contribute little to recovery. This finding provides a strong basis for a harvesting strategy that targets the largest fronds.Author for correspondence  相似文献

Changes in the structure of the Ascophyllum nodosum population at Pubnico, southwest Nova Scotia, Canada, at an experimental site subjected to mechanical harvest and at two control sites never subjected to mechanical harvest were monitored from 1991 to 1994. A bimodal population structure measured in terms of plant length was characteristic of all these sites before the experiment. The population structure of the experimental site became unimodal immediately after experimental harvest by machine and remained unimodal for the subsequent two years. However, a bimodal population structure began to appear in the third year. A bimodal population structure remained evident at the control site with bedrock as the substratum but was less evident at the other control site where the substratum is made up of boulders and cobbles. Movement of loose rocks with rockweeds still attached may have contributed to the less distinct modal structure of this control site. Other sites with different harvesting histories monitored in the summer of 1992 showed some interesting patterns. A unimodal population structure was evident in Argyle Sound and Pubnico Point South and at Charlesville, which had been harvested one and two years before, respectively. A bimodal population structure was more evident at Frenchman's Point, which had been harvested three years prior. The rate of change from a unimodal to a bimodal population structure may depend on the intensity of harvest. Extensive canopy removal in intensively harvested areas may be conducive to an influx of recruits and to regeneration from the holdfast. Hence, plant length modal structure may be a useful measure of the relative state of recovery of a harvested population.  相似文献

Phlorotannins have received much attention due to their ecophysiological importance and potential applications in the biotechnology and food industries. Antioxidant activity studies in seaweeds have mainly focused on in vitro assays; however, there is a paucity of data regarding the effect of brown algal phlorotannins on living cultured cells. The aim of the present study was to investigate both direct and protective effects of phlorotannin-rich extracts on cell viability and the cellular oxidative status of cultured liver cells HepG2 against oxidative stress induced by tert-butyl hydroperoxide (t-BOOH). Extracts of the Phaeophyceae Ascophyllum nodosum (Fucaceae) and Himanthalia elongata (Himanthaliaceae) were submitted to gastrointestinal digestion prior to incubation for 20 h in a HepG2 culture at physiological concentrations (0.5–50 μg mL?1). Various markers of cellular oxidative stress were then assessed, such as the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), antioxidant defences (concentration of reduced glutathione and activities of glutathione peroxidase, reductase and glutathione-S-transferase) and the levels of malondialdehyde as a marker for lipid peroxidation. The direct effect on cellular markers was assessed immediately after the incubation period, whereas for the protective effect, the incubation period was followed by a 3-h treatment with t-BOOH. The results indicated no effect on cell viability, and both extracts showed reduced levels of ROS and increased antioxidant defences in the direct treatment. Moreover, the extracts showed a significant protective effect against chemically induced oxidative stress in HepG2 cells by reducing ROS generation and enhancing antioxidant defences, hence supporting the utility of including brown algal extracts in functional food products.  相似文献

Dictyota cyanoloma has recently been described from the Mediterranean Sea and Macaronesia but doubt had arisen as to whether this species was truly native in Europe. The species is mainly found on non-natural substrata (harbour walls, marinas, boat hulls, etc.), strongly suggesting that it is an introduction. Molecular sequence information from historical herbarium samples proves the presence of D. cyanoloma in the Adriatic Sea as early as 1935. Since approximately the year 2000, however, the number of records as well as the geographic range of the species has expanded significantly. The present-day distribution of D. cyanoloma occupies most of the Mediterranean Sea, Macaronesia, NW Africa and southern Portugal, but recent records from Galicia and SW England (Falmouth, Cornwall) indicate that the species is rapidly expanding northward. Collections from Australia demonstrated that the species is also present from Perth in Western Australia, over much of the southern Australian coastline up to Minnie Water in New South Wales. Phylogenetic analyses resolve D. cyanoloma in a sister clade to a previously unreported Australian Dictyota species. Analysis of genetic diversity of the mitochondrial markers (nad6–nad11 and atp9–orf11) reveals that even though Australian populations contain a much higher haplotype richness, European populations are also fairly diverse. Furthermore, only two out of 25 haplotypes are shared between both regions. These somewhat counterintuitive results could be indicative of a more complicated introduction history.  相似文献

The use of a Norwegian suction cutter to harvest populations of the brown alga Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jolis in southwestern Nova Scotia started in 1985. The impact of this type of mechanical harvest on the algal population structure was evaluated. Changes in the length and density of individual plants (clumps) within 0.25 m–2 quadrats, as well as the length of individual shoots within clumps were monitored before and after an experimental harvest. The mechanical harvest cut mainly the longer plants, thus changed the initial bimodal size structure of the population to unimodal. There was a 20 to 36% plant mortality, reducing the plant density from 92.6 to 73.6 individuals m–2. Pre-harvest size distribution of the tagged shoots was skewed to the right and became more normal after the harvest. Tagged shoots in the harvested quadrats suffered a 42% mortality as compared to 11% of those in the control quadrats. An understanding of the impact of the mechanical harvesting on the harvested population is essential in the design of a management strategy. Sources of variation in the impact of mechanical harvest include the tide level at time of harvest, length of time the machine operated in one site, skill of the machine operator, and sharpness of the machine cutting blades.  相似文献

Populations of the toxic, epiphytic dinoflagellate Gambierdiscus toxicus Adachi et Fukuyo are asSociated closely with Jania sp. on Hitiaa and Papara fringing reefs in Tahiti. Small populations were also observed to be asSociated with Amphiroa sp. and Halimeda opuntia (L.) Lamouroux. The cells attached themselves to the thallus by means of a short thread. When the thalli were irradiated, the cells began to detach from them and swim around the branches. The swimming cells stopped and attached to substrata when a disturbance occurred. The attached cells began to swim within a short time under light conditions when the thallus of Jania sp. were placed near the attached cells. Amphiroa sp. and H. opuntia also induced this re-commencement of swimming of the attached cells. These observations suggest that G. toxicus usually swims around macroalgal thalli on coral reefs. When sudden disturbance or strong water motion occurs, they attach to the surface of macroalgae and are not dispersed. Soon after water motion becomes slow, the cells begin to swim into the water around the thalli. The epiphytism of G. toxicus is different from epiphytic pennate diatoms, most of which adhere to the thallus all the time. The population of G. toxicus is maintained as an asSociation to a limited number of species of macroalgae which support the re-commencement of swimming after disturbance.  相似文献

Alaria esculenta populations from six differentgeographical locations on the Irish coast wereexamined for hybridization abilities, growth rates andgenetic make-up with a view towards identifying afast-growing strain suitable for aquaculture.Hybridization experiments under laboratory conditionswith the three most geographically dispersedpopulations showed that all cross combinations wereinterfertile, although differences were found insurvival, and in blade and hapteron morphology. Acomparison of relative growth rates showed significantdifferences amongst the self-crosses and hybrids. Thedata of the hybridization experiments and growth ratesunder laboratory conditions show that the bestpopulation for the purpose of seaweed aquaculture arethe Slea Head and Corbet Head self-crosses and theirhybrids. Genetic fingerprinting of the internaltranscribed spacer of the ribosomal DNA of five A. esculenta isolates from geographically separatedpopulations in Ireland revealed no restriction lengthpolymorphisms between the tested isolates and showthat the A. esculenta populations around theIrish coast are clearly genetically homogenous inrespect of the DNA region examined. The geneticanalysis, interfertility of the populations,morphology and growth rates are discussed with a viewto potential cultivation.  相似文献

The seaweed Ascophyllum nodosum (Phaeophyceae, Fucales) often forms extensive beds in wave‐sheltered, rocky intertidal habitats on northern Atlantic shores. Since this alga is an ecosystem engineer that influences benthic biodiversity, it is important to understand the factors that regulate its performance. Epiphytism is known to affect the performance of macroalgal hosts. In this study, we investigated the effects of surface irregularities on A. nodosum fronds (wounds, branch axils, and lateral pits resulting from receptacle shedding) on the recruitment rate of its obligate epiphyte Vertebrata lanosa (=Polysiphonia lanosa, Rhodophyta, Ceramiales). For this purpose, we performed a field experiment in Nova Scotia, Canada. In June–July 2007, we created wounds on the surface of host fronds that mimicked the wounds that result from invertebrate grazing. At that time, we also mapped the position of epiphyte‐free lateral pits and branch axils on host fronds. In October 2007, after the reproductive season for V. lanosa, the percentage of microsites colonized by this epiphyte was statistically similar for wounds and lateral pits, but significantly lower for branch axils, although by a small difference (mean recruitment rates ranged between 37 and 50%). Since V. lanosa is known not to colonize smooth frond surfaces, our study suggests that the degree of epiphyte load on A. nodosum beds should largely be affected by the overall amount of surface irregularities, with little influence of the relative availability of each microsite type.  相似文献
