1.  Inducible defences may be temporary and favoured where predation is intermittent and have been demonstrated in several invertebrates and vertebrates when prey detect chemical cues (kairomones) released by predators. Daphnia pulex (a water flea) exposed to Chaoborus (midge larvae) kairomones produce small neckteeth on the dorsal surface of the head as a defence against this gape-limited predator and survive better in the presence of Chaoborus . Recent studies have shown that waterborne copper (Cu) impairs the induction of neckteeth which could lead to lower survival.
2.  Here, we examined the effects of Cu on morphological changes and shifts in life-history traits in D. pulex exposed to kairomone from Chaoborus americanus . We exposed D. pulex mothers to chemical cues of C. americanus fed on either D. pulex neonates or on brine shrimp Artemia salina , the same Chaoborus cues combined with an environmentally relevant concentration of copper (10 μg L−1), or dechlorinated tap water. We examined several morphological characteristics of neonates and life-historical characteristics of adults as well as assessing survival of neonates by staging encounters with predators.
3.  Neonates from mothers exposed to kairomone plus copper had fewer and shorter neckteeth than neonates from mothers exposed to kairomone alone. Moreover, neonates exposed to Cu had lower survival during encounters with predators than neonates exposed to kairomone without Cu.
4.  Adult female Daphnia exposed to kairomones released more neonates within the first 24 h of brood release and emptied their brood pouches quicker than mothers not exposed to kairomones, irrespective of the presence of Cu.

1. The exotic cladoceran Daphnia lumholtzi has recently invaded freshwater systems throughout the United States. Daphnia lumholtzi possesses extravagant head spines that are longer than those found on any other North American Daphnia. These spines are effective at reducing predation from many of the predators that are native to newly invaded habitats; however, they are plastic both in nature and in laboratory cultures. The purpose of this experiment was to better understand what environmental cues induce and maintain these effective predator‐deterrent spines. We conducted life‐table experiments on individual D. lumholtzi grown in water conditioned with an invertebrate insect predator, Chaoborus punctipennis, and water conditioned with a vertebrate fish predator, Lepomis macrochirus. 2. Daphnia lumholtzi exhibited morphological plasticity in response to kairomones released by both predators. However, direct exposure to predator kairomones during postembryonic development did not induce long spines in D. lumholtzi. In contrast, neonates produced from individuals exposed to Lepomis kairomones had significantly longer head and tail spines than neonates produced from control and Chaoborus individuals. These results suggest that there may be a maternal, or pre‐embryonic, effect of kairomone exposure on spine development in D. lumholtzi. 3. Independent of these morphological shifts, D. lumholtzi also exhibited plasticity in life history characteristics in response to predator kairomones. For example, D. lumholtzi exhibited delayed reproduction in response to Chaoborus kairomones, and significantly more individuals produced resting eggs, or ephippia, in the presence of Lepomis kairomones.  相似文献

Parasite resistance may act via a number of different mechanisms that regulate or control the survival and the reproductive rate of parasites. Observations and experiments were used to test for effects of host resistance on parasite survival and rate of reproduction. Natural levels of infestation of barn swallow Hirundo rustica nests by the tropical fowl mite Ornithonyssus bursa were positively related to brood size, inversely related to the length of the outermost tail feathers of male nest owners (a secondary sexual character) and affected by time of reproduction by the host. A mite inoculation experiment, in which 50 adult mites were introduced into nests during the laying period of the host, was used to test for differential survival and reproduction of mites as a function of host resistance. The relationship between survival and reproduction of parasites, male tail length and host resistance was investigated. There was a negative relationship between mite numbers per nest after fledging of nestlings and male tail length. This relationship was mainly caused by a reduction in the number of mites in the first and second nymph stage with increasing tail length of male hosts, implying a reduction in rate of reproduction of mites. The proportion of mites that had recently fed was inversely related to tail length of male hosts. The proportion of nymph stages was positively related to the proportion of mites that had recently had a blood meal. Parasite resistance of barn swallows to the tropical fowl mite thus appeared to act through increased mortality rate of adult and nymph stages of mites, and through reduced reproductive rates of mites on resistant hosts. This is the first study demonstating a direct relationship between fitness components of a parasite and the expression of a secondary sexual character of a host. 1. Predation incurs high fitness costs in aquatic organisms either through direct consumption or through avoidance responses that reduce time for activities such as feeding and reproduction. Hence, avoidance responses of aquatic organisms should vary to match closely the predation threat in their environment.
2. The freshwater gastropod Lymnaea stagnalis occurs in a variety of environments which vary in the presence or absence of predatory fish. We used naïve snails reared from six populations of this species experiencing different predator regimes (three co-occurring with molluscivorous fish and three without) to assess whether populations differed in the type and degree of their avoidance behaviours. Innate behavioural responses to four treatments (control, conspecific alarm cues, fish kairomones and fish kairomones paired with alarm cue) were compared in laboratory trials.
3. The primary anti-predator behaviour of L. stagnalis in response to fish kairomones was to crawl out of the water rather than seek refuge under water. This response was strongest when fish kairomones were paired with alarm cues, and varied depending on population origin; snails reared from populations co-occurring with predatory fish showed a stronger response than those raised from populations not experiencing such predators. In addition, populations co-occurring with predatory fish responded to the fish kairomones presented alone.
4. Our findings suggest that the degree of innate anti-predator behaviour shown by L. stagnalis , in terms of both the level of risk to which it responds and the degree of response, varies depending on the predator regime experienced by field populations. Together with previous work on cue association, this demonstrates that this gastropod is able to match its avoidance behaviour very closely to short and long term predation threats within its habitat.  相似文献

1. We studied the life history responses of Daphnia pulex under different biotic conditions. In a factorially designed experiment, we tested the impacts of water conditioned by the invertebrate predator Chaoborus, low and high food level (10 000 and 100 000 Scenedesmus cells ml–1), and exposure to toxic Microcystis (5000 cells ml–1) on twelve D. pulex clones originating from different habitats. Our aim was to compare the phenotypic plasticity of different clones, and to study the interactions among biotic factors.
2. Individuals cultured in Chaoborus -conditioned water started to reproduce at a larger size than individuals cultured in water not conditioned by the predators. We found interactions between food level and Chaoborus -conditioned water on age at first reproduction and total offspring number. In addition, the impact of the Chaoborus treatment on the size at first reproduction was reduced by Microcystis exposure.
3. Clonal differences were found in the degree of phenotypic plasticity of different life history traits. However, there was no obvious connection between the original habitat of the clone and the degree of plasticity.  相似文献

1. Inducible defences are advantageous because they protect the prey while limiting associated fitness costs. The presence of these costs is an essential component of this conditional strategy, since their absence would favour constitutive (fixed) defences. In some cases, however, these costs have been difficult to measure because of complex interactions between the defences themselves, resultant life history changes and the organism’s environment. 2. The pond‐dwelling water flea, Daphnia pulex, forms defensive neck spines in response to kairomones released by predatory larvae of the phantom midge, Chaoborus. This predator–prey interaction and the formation of these inducible defences have been well studied, but costs associated with the development of neck spines remain unclear. In this study, I address this problem by analysing the effect of Chaoborus kairomones on the life history responses (and fitness costs associated with these responses) of two clones of D. pulex that are from the same pond population, but differ greatly in their degree of neck spine development. 3. Both D. pulex clones exhibited the same predator‐induced shifts in life history: larger size at birth, reduced juvenile growth rate (producing a smaller size at maturity), delayed reproduction and a reduction in the number of neonates produced after the first clutch. Relative fitness decreased significantly and to the same degree (c. 10% reduction in r) in each clone. This observed fitness cost was not directly related to the neck spines per se since the cost was the same in both clones, despite their considerable differences in neck spine development. Rather, it appears to be indirectly related to this antipredator morphology via a combination of delayed reproduction and a set of life history trade‐offs (decreased growth rate, decreased reproduction after the first clutch) for increased neonate body size, which is necessary for neck spines to be effective defences. This suite of induced responses is probably a result of local adaptation of these two D. pulex clones to their common pond environment. 4. Costs of inducible defences do not always entail direct allocation costs associated with forming and maintaining a defence, but may also involve indirect life history responses that are specific to particular environmental situations. This local adaptation would explain the highly variable life history responses observed among D. pulex clones from different pond environments.  相似文献

Of all the environmental pressures that all organisms across all kingdoms must face, one of the greatest is the risk of predation. The unpredictability of predation events from the perspective of a single individual is one of the major components of a changing, unstable environment (Gliwicz and Pijanowska, 1989; Lampert, 1987). The panoply of antipredator defenses among terrestrial and aquatic organisms involves a variety of morphological, behavioral, and life-history adaptations that even if they are not life-saving, may enable organisms to complete reproduction before predation occurs. Most of these phenotypic changes are directly induced by cues associated with the biotic agent, in the case of aquatic organisms, the chemical compounds (kairomones) released by a predator into the water. Herein we show that exposure of Daphnia to invertebrate and vertebrate kairomones results in changes in motion, behavior, and life history and at the molecular level involves changes in heat-shock proteins (HSPs) level and the actin and tubulin cytoskeleton. In addition, some of these effects are transgenerational, i.e., they are passed on from the mother to her offspring.  相似文献

The difficulties in measuring total fitness of individuals necessitate the use of fitness surrogates in ecological and evolutionary studies. These surrogates can be different components of fitness (e.g. survival or fecundity), or proxies more uncertainly related to fitness (e.g. body size or growth rate). Ideally, fitness would be measured over the lifetime of individuals; however, more convenient short-time measures are often used. Adult lifetime reproductive success (adult LRS) is closely related to the total fitness of individuals, but it is difficult to measure and rarely included in fitness estimation in experimental studies. We explored phenotypic correlations between female adult LRS and various commonly used fitness components and proxies in a recently founded laboratory population of Drosophila littoralis. Noting that survival is usually higher in laboratory conditions than in nature, we also calculated adjusted adult LRS measures that give more weight to early reproduction. The lifetime measures of fecundity, longevity, and offspring viability were all relatively highly correlated with adult LRS. However, correlations with short-time measures of fecundity and offspring production varied greatly depending on the time of measurement, and the optimal time for measurement was different for unadjusted compared to adjusted adult LRS measures. Correlations between size measures and adult LRS varied from weak to modest, leg size and female weight having the highest correlations. Our results stress the importance of well-founded choice of fitness surrogates in empirical research.  相似文献

1. Maternal adult diet and body size influence the fecundity of a female and possibly the quality and the performance of her offspring via egg size or egg quality. In laboratory experiments, negative effects in the offspring generation have often been obscured by optimal rearing conditions.
2. To estimate these effects in the Yellow Dung Fly, Scathophaga stercoraria , how maternal body size and adult nutritional status affected her fecundity, longevity and egg size were first investigated.
3. Second, it was investigated how female age and adult nutritional experience, mediated through the effects of egg size or egg quality, influenced the performance of offspring at different larval densities.
4. Maternal size was less important than maternal adult feeding in increasing reproductive output. Without food restriction, large females had larger clutch sizes and higher oviposition rates, whereas under food restriction this advantage was reversed in favour of small females.
5. Offspring from mothers reared under nutritional stress experienced reduced fitness in terms of egg mortality and survival to adult emergence. If the offspring from low-quality eggs survived, the transmitted maternal food deficiency only affected adult male body size under stressful larval environments.

In aquatic environments, prey perceive predator threats by chemical cues called kairomones, which can induce changes in their morphology, life histories, and behavior. Predator‐induced defenses have allowed for prey, such as Daphnia pulex, to avert capture by common invertebrate predators, such as Chaoborus sp. larvae. However, the influence of additional stressors, such as ultraviolet radiation (UVR), on the Daphnia–Chaoborus interaction is not settled as UVR may for instance deactivate the kairomone. In laboratory experiments, we investigated the combined effect of kairomones and UVR at ecologically relevant levels on induced morphological defenses of two D. pulex clones. We found that kairomones were not deactivated by UVR exposure. Instead, UVR exposure suppressed induced morphological defense traits of D. pulex juveniles under predation threat by generally decreasing the number of neckteeth and especially by decreasing the size of the pedestal beneath the neckteeth. UVR exposure also decreased the body length, body width, and tail spine length of juveniles, likely additionally increasing the vulnerability to Chaoborus predation. Our results suggest potential detrimental effects on fitness and survival of D. pulex subject to UVR stress, with consequences on community composition and food web structure in clear and shallow water bodies.  相似文献

For many insect herbivores, maternal host selection is a critical determinant of offspring survival; however, maternal fitness is also affected by adult resources such as food availability. Consequently, adult resources may promote oviposition in sub-optimal locations when measured in terms of offspring performance. We tested whether oviposition site preference is primarily shaped by proximity to adult food resources or offspring performance in the aspen leaf miner (Phyllocnistis populiella). Quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) produce extrafloral nectaries (EFNs) on a subset of their leaves. EFN expression on leaves is associated with decreased P. populiella damage and larval performance; however, P. populiella adults feed from EFNs. We reduced extrafloral nectar availability on entire aspen ramets and excluded crawling predators in a full factorial experiment at two sites in interior Alaska, USA. Patterns of egg deposition by P. populiella appeared to be primarily affected by offspring survival rather than adult resource availability. While oviposition was unaffected by nectar availability, adult moths laid fewer eggs on leaves with than without EFNs. By avoiding leaves with EFNs, moths increased offspring survival. Both moths and predators distinguished between leaves with and without EFNs even when nectar and visual cues were obscured, and therefore may respond to chemical cues associated with EFN expression.  相似文献

1. Viviparous insects such as tsetse ( Glossina spp.) provide unusual opportunities to compare age-related changes in the proportion of maternal resources transferred to offspring.
2. In laboratory populations of Glossina morsitans morsitans the survival of females was high for the first 60 days of adult life but declined rapidly thereafter.
3. Average longevity did not differ significantly between mated and unmated females (93·6 and 90 days, respectively).
4. Nutritional state in terms of fat content and residual dry mass did not decline with adult female age.
5. The fecundity of mated females was constant for the first 60 days of adult life and declined only slightly thereafter.
6. Offspring size did not change towards the end of the adult female lifespan and there was no evidence of an increase in the allocation of resources to reproduction in older females.
7. Results contrast with those obtained recently for vertebrates and may indicate that age-related changes in offspring size in Glossina are not adaptive, or that so few females reach old age under natural conditions that there is no selection for a strategy of terminal investment.  相似文献

Summary The breeding phenology of temperate wood-lice is strongly seasonal, the result of physiological constraints and precise environmental cues for reproduction. The adaptive value of such mechanisms is that the release of offspring coincides with favourable conditions for growth and survival (Willows 1984). We recorded the breeding phenology of Armadillidium vulgare (Latreille) on two grassland sites in Great Britain and found between-site and between-year variation in the onset of reproduction, the duration of reproductive activity, the release of offspring, the size of reproductive females and the number of broods per female. Between 82.7 and 97.7% of gravid females sampled were semelparous at 23 months, with the remainder iteroparous, producing a second brood after 35 months. On one site (Weeting Health) improved growth conditions during 1984 allowed some females (19.3% of gravid females sampled in that year) to produce a brood after 11 months. There was also an increase in the number of 3-year-old females found to be gravid. An experimental manipulation of the same habitat confirmed that such changes in life history tactics could be phenotypic responses. The observed phenotypic variation was sufficient to produce a range of life history tactics within a population. Mixtures of life history tactics within a population may be typical of invasive species and populations at the edge of the species range. Our results support the idea that phenotypic plasticity can be an appropriate tactic to maximise fitness in a fluctuating environment (Caswell 1983, 1989).  相似文献

1. The theory on adaptive phenotypic plasticity assumes different fitness optima in different environments. To demonstrate these fitness differences in the field or under laboratory conditions can be difficult.
2. The size of the coloured patches on the abdomen of Eristalis arbustorum varies with rearing temperature. At low temperatures small patches develop and at higher temperatures larger patches develop. Consequently, the colour patch size varies seasonally.
3. To study the relative fitness of two extreme phenotypes in abdominal coloration in the summer, a total of 591 laboratory-reared flies were released in six large population cages. As a measure of fitness, survival was estimated.
4. In all replicate cages the survival of the pale phenotypes was higher than that of the dark phenotypes, indicating a higher fitness for the pale flies under summer conditions.
5. The fat content of flies reared under identical conditions to those released in the cages was measured. Pale flies had ≈ 0·7 mg more fat than dark flies (± 25% extra fat). However, it is argued that this difference in fat reserves could not have been the only cause of the observed difference in survival.

During their lifetime most organisms are exposed to various enemies influencing their victims in multiple direct and indirect ways. Most studies concentrate on the effects of one enemy at a time, thereby not taking into account that in nature organisms are often simultaneously exposed to more than one enemy. We conducted a life-history experiment to investigate the simultaneous effects of predators (fish, Leuciscus idus) and parasites (microparasite, Caullerya mesnili) on their victim (Daphnia galeata). D. galeata were exposed to predator kairomones, parasites or both. D. galeata are able to sense the presence of fish predators via chemical cues (= kairomones). Both fish predator kairomones and microparasite infections influence the life history of Daphnia. Some of the effects of fish predator kairomones are directly opposed to microparasite effects; fecundity, for example, is increased in the presence of fish kairomones and decreased in Daphnia parasitised with C. mesnili. We investigated the influence of both threats on age at maturity, body size at different adult instars, fecundity and survival of one D. galeata clone. In the presence of fish kairomones, all D. galeata matured significantly earlier and increased the number of eggs in the second brood significantly. Parasitised D. galeata matured significantly earlier than non-parasitised ones in the absence and presence of fish kairomones. An infection with the microparasite C. mesnili led to significantly lower clutch sizes at the second adult instar, to significantly smaller body sizes from adult instar three onwards and to significantly reduced survival. No significant interaction effect between the responses to fish presence and to parasite infection was found for any of the investigated life-history traits. The lack of interaction effects between the exposure to predator kairomones and parasite infection was most likely due to the different timing of the effects. Fish kairomones affected D. galeata early in its life history whereas C. mesnili increased in its effects over time. Our results show that parasitised D. galeata are able to exhibit life-history responses to fish predator presence early in their lives. Thus, D. galeata parasitised with C. mesnili have a similar chance as non-parasitised D. galeata to escape from fish predation via life-history changes. Since older parasitised D. galeata are smaller, they may have an even better chance to escape visual predators under actual predation.  相似文献

In the present study, the effect of chemical cues from two fish species (mosquitofish and pumpkinseed), at different concentrations, was tested in life history experiments with Daphnia longispina. The two fish species used represent the most abundant planktivores of many Mediterranean shallow lakes (SW Europe), where the indigenous fish communities have been replaced by such exotic assemblages. Results have shown a similar response of D. longispina to both fish species: kairomones stimulated daphnids to produce more offspring, which resulted in higher fitness (r), relatively to a fishless control. Fish presence also induced an earlier first reproduction, a smaller size at maturity of daphnids, and the production of smaller-sized neonates. Significant correlations with fish concentration (indirect measure of fish kairomone concentration) were found for size at maturity and neonate size, for both fish species. These results are in accordance to the “positive response” observed by other authors, which represents a defence mechanism to face losses caused by fish predators. The chemically mediated size reduction of mature females and neonates is an adaptive response to the size-selective predation exerted by fish. Pumpkinseed introduction is very recent in the lake of origin of the daphnids used in the experiments and its kairomone produced similar effects to mosquitofish in the life history of D. longispina. These results are contrary to the existence of a species-specific kairomone and support the hypothesis of a general fish kairomone. Abstract.  1. This is the first work to show how imperfect kin recognition influences the behavioural strategy of parasitoids.
2. The female of Echthrodelphax fairchildii lays an egg on the right or left side of the host thorax. When superparasitising on the side without the first offspring, it often probed the opposite side with its sting and killed the first offspring more than 50% of the time. The frequency of probing increased with increasing inter-oviposition interval, and was higher in conspecific superparasitism than in self superparasitism.
3. The adaptiveness of probing was assessed by the difference in fitness returns between superparasitism with probing and superparasitism without probing. Fitness returns from self‐superparasitism and those from conspecific superparasitism were assessed by the fitness performance of both first and second comers, and that of second comers respectively.
4. In terms of the survival rate of immatures (one fitness component), probing under conspecific superparasitism guaranteed higher fitness returns than not probing for longer oviposition intervals, but under self‐superparasitism not probing guaranteed higher fitness returns for shorter intervals because superparasitism for such intervals often resulted in two-adult emergence.
5. In terms of head width (another fitness component), probing produced higher fitness returns for shorter oviposition intervals for both self and conspecific superparasitism.
6. Assuming that offspring quantity contributes more to fitness returns than does offspring quality, the observed frequencies of probing were considered adaptive for parasitoids whose abilities to distinguish between self and conspecifically parasitised hosts and to estimate inter-oviposition intervals are imperfect.  相似文献

Most theoretical treatments of the evolutionary ecology of offspring size assume a simple and direct effect of investment per offspring on offspring fitness. In this paper I experimentally determine the relationship between seed mass and several main fitness components of the oak Quercus ilex, to estimate phenotypic selection acting on seed mass during the early life cycle and to discover any potential selective conflicts occurring between different stages from dispersal to establishment. I found a positive effect of acorn size on most fitness components related to seedling establishment. Large size increased germination rate and seedling survival, accelerated germination timing, and enhanced seedling growth. Nevertheless, there was also a direct negative effect of acorn size on survival to predation, because large acorns were highly preferred by the main postdispersal seed predators at the study site, wild boars and wood mice. Because of the low probability of escape from predation, the fitness of large acorns estimated on this component was significantly lower than the fitness of smaller acorns. Therefore, seed size affected fitness in two different ways, yielding opposing and conflicting selective forces. These findings suggest that the general assumption that offspring fitness is a fixed positive function of seed size needs to be reconsidered for some systems. The existence of conflicting selection might explain the occurrence of an optimal seed size in some plant species without invoking a seed number-size trade-off.  相似文献

Body size at birth has implications for the quality of individuals throughout their life. Although large body size is generally considered an advantage, the relationship between body size at birth and long-term fitness is often complicated. Under spatial or temporal variation in environmental conditions, such as the seasonally changing densities of Fennoscandian vole populations, selection should favor variation in offspring phenotypes, as different qualities may be beneficial in different conditions. We performed an experiment in which a novel hormonal manipulation method was used to increase phenotypic variance in body size at birth in the bank vole (Myodes glareolus). The effects of body size on the future fitness of young males and females were then studied at varying population densities in outdoor enclosures. Our results show that small body size at birth and high breeding density increase the survival costs of reproduction. However, there was no interaction between the effects of body size and density on survival, which suggests that the fitness effects of body size were strong enough to persist under environmental variation. Moreover, litter size and the probability of breeding were more sensitive to variation in breeding density than offspring size. Therefore, it is unlikely that individual fitness could be optimized by adjusting offspring body size to the prevailing population density through adaptive maternal effects. Our results highlight the significance of the costs of reproduction in the evolution of life-history traits, and give strong experimental support for the long-term fitness effects of body size at birth.  相似文献
