1. Some characteristics of the photosynthesis and primary production of benthic and planktonic algal communities were investigated in a littoral zone covered with gravel in the north basin of Lake Biwa, paying special attention to the recent development of filamentous green algae (FGA) in the benthic algal community.
2. Pmax (maximum gross photosynthesis rate) values of the benthic algal community (0.1–1.2 mg C mg chl. a −1 h−1) obtained from photosynthesis–irradiance (P–I) curves were lower than those of the planktonic algal community (2.4–11.5 mg C mg chl. a −1 h−1). This is apparently a result of the high degree of self shading in the benthic algal community and its low turnover as compared with that of the planktonic algal community.
3. Relatively high Ik values (150–200 μmol photon m−2 s−1) were observed in the benthic algal community only in June–July when a FGA, Spirogyra sp., was abundant. This reflected a photosynthetic characteristic of the Spirogyra itself, in which photosynthesis was saturated at high light intensity.
4. The FGA community established in the layer between planktonic and sessile (benthic algae except for FGA) algal communities. It brought about extraordinarily high organic matter production in the littoral zone at the expense of production in the sessile algal community.  相似文献

Vertical distributions of biomass and the photosynthetic activity of epilithic algae were observed seasonally with regard to their physical and chemical parameters along a rocky shoreline of the upper littoral area in the north basin of Lake Biwa. Chlorophyll a amounts in epilithic algae showed a marked change with depth from spring to early summer. The algal biomass showed higher values on the lower part of a large rock in early spring, and gradually increased on the upper part as a result of the growth of Spirogyra sp., a filamentous Chlorophyceae. This growth seems to be associated with a rise in water temperature, with the biomass at the upper depths seeming to be affected by a hydraulic disturbance. The standing crop of epilithic algae showed a maximum value in June and declined to a minimum in August because of the corresponding proliferation or disappearance of Spirogyra as well as changes in the water level. The maximum value of the assimilation number calculated from the potential photosynthetic rate of epilithic algae was obtained at the lower depths in June when Spirogyra grew vigorously. Appreciably high assimilation numbers were also observed in summer and fall, although chlorophyll a amounts were low. The present study is the first in a series to clarify the contribution of epilithic algae on rocky areas to productivity throughout the entire littoral ecosystem.  相似文献

Observations were made on the development and distribution of phytoperiphyton communities in 66 lake-river systems in NW Russia from Lake Ladoga to the Barents Sea. In total, 130 genera and 648 species were identified from different substrates, belonging to Cyanophyta (19.1%), Bacillariophyta (59.6%), Chlorophyta (18.7%), and algae from other orders (2.6%). In all streams diatoms dominated by species richness, but they were surpassed by green algae in terms of biomass. The green algae ranged from small planktonic forms to large filamentous species and produced easily visible algal communities. Among the planktonic forms the desmids were the most diverse group. They occurred in attached communities of all rivers and, while never abundant, were widespread. The attached community’s biomass was dominated by green algae. Among these, the filamentous algae Mougeotia sp., Oedogonium sp., Zygnema sp., Spirogyra sp. and Ulothrix zonata exhibited mass development in streams. Their distribution was patchy in the basin, with a total cover varying from less than 1% to 90% of the stream bottom. In some river stretches the diversity and predominance of green algae could be due, in part, to poorly developed riparian canopies. The term periphyton adopted here follows the definition of Odum (1971): “Assemblages which include both plant and animal organisms growing attached to submerged objects”. The prefix phyto- is added to indicate that of the whole biocoenoses only phototrophs are considered in this study. In shallow water areas of open Lake Baikal, filamentous green alga of the genus Spirogyra grows abundantly. Together with alga of the genus Ulothrix, it forms algal mats. According to our observations from 2010 to 2013, the spawning habitat conditions for the yellowfin sculpin Cottocomephorus grewingkii (Dybowski, 1874) (Cottidae) proved to be significantly disturbed in the littoral zone of Listvennichnyi Bay (southern Baikal), which, in turn, reduced the number of egg layings. With a 100% projective cover of the floor and a high density of green filamentous algae, the shallow-water stony substrate becomes completely inaccessible for spawning of the August population.  相似文献

A laboratory assay (SAGA or Sediment Algal Growth Assay) was developed to assess the potential impact of sediment resuspension on the structure of phytoplankton communities, and to evaluate the effectiveness of various sediment treatments in decreasing the abundance of blue-green algae in the event of sediment resuspension during storms. In assays with sediment from eutrophic Akanoi Bay, Lake Biwa, Japan, 7–11 species of phytoplankton seeded from the sediments grew during the 3-week assay indicating that sediment resuspension has the potential to increase both phytoplankton biomass and species diversity. Treatment of sediments with Ca(NO3)2 substantially decreased phytoplankton biomass (measured as chlorophyll concentration) in assays with sediments from Akanoi Bay and the North Basin of Lake Biwa. Further, among various oxidation treatments of sediments, Ca(NO3)2 was most effective in decreasing or preventing filamentous blue-green algal growth in N- and P-replete media. In contrast, when sediments were added to P-limited phytoplankton dominated by green algae and diatoms, no growth of blue-green algae occurred regardless of sediment treatment. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The distribution and abundance of benthic algae and macroinvertebrates were examined along a natural thermal gradient formed by hot springs in Little Geysers Creek, Sonoma Co., California, USA. Maximum water temperatures ranged from 52 °C at the uppermost station to 23 °C at a station 400 m downstream. Benthic chlorophyll a decreased exponentially from 2.5 g m–2 at 52 °C to less than 0.1 g m–2 at 23 °C, a pattern of decline also exhibited by algal phaeophytin. Blue-green algae dominated at higher temperatures but were replaced by filamentous green algae and diatoms at lower temperatures.Macroinvertebrates were absent at temperatures 45 °C; the highest density (> 150 000 m–2, mainly Chironomidae) occurred at 34 °C, whereas biomass was highest (4.6 g m–2, as dry weight) at 23 °C and species richness (15 species) was highest at 27 °C. The two predominant macroinvertebrate populations (the midge Tanytarsus sp. and the caddisfly Helicopsyche borealis) occurred at sites that were several degrees below their lethal thermal threshold, suggesting that a temperature buffer is maintained.  相似文献

Chlorophyll-α concentration, algal biomass and photosynthetic activity decrease with increasing sediment depth. Chlorophyll-α and biomass minima were found at the sediment surface on several occasions. This may be due to the removal of algae by wave action or vertical migrations of the algae in the sediment. By comparing stations with different degrees of exposure it was shown that wave action affects the size of the benthic populations. The epipsammic microphytobenthos is an important primary producer in the littoral zone of Lake Mikolajskie.  相似文献

Enrichment cultures of littoral benthic algae from Mono Lake, California, and Abert Lake, Oregon, were grown under conditions of varied salinity and nutrient content. Field-collected inocula were composed mainly of diatoms and filamentous blue-green and green algae. The yield of long-term cultures (30 days) showed tolerance over a broad salinity range (50–150 g·L?1) for Mono Lake-derived algae. Algae from Abert Lake had a lower range of tolerance (25–100 g·L?1) Organic content and pigment concentrations of algae from both lakes were also reduced above the tolerated salinity level. Within the range of salinity tolerance for Mono Lake algae, initial growth rates and organic content were reduced by increased salinity. The effects of macro- and micronutrient enrichment on algal growth in Mono Lake water were also tested. Only nitrogen enrichment (either as ammonium or nitrate) stimulated algal growth. Although the benthic algae cultured here had wide optima for salinity tolerance, the rates of growth and storage were limited by increased salinity within the optimum range. Although the lakes compared had similar species composition, the range and limits of tolerance of the algae were related to salinity of the lake of origin.  相似文献

To ascertain the floristic interaction between phytoplankton and benthos in the littoral, the composition of each community was investigated and the effect of the substrata on the benthic communities was also examined. The main component of the benthic algal population wasFragilaria pinnata followed byF. pinnata var.lancettula. Although the dominant species of the plankton in the upper layers were similar to those in the limnetic, and those immediately above the bottom contained species of benthic origin, the similarity index of C implied high similarity between these two plankton layers. This index was developed by Morishita (1959) to measure the degree of overlap of component species between two communities. The value of C distributes from 0 to 1. The closer the value approaches 1, the more the communities are similar. For the dominant species, a significant difference was observed between the phytoplankton and benthic communities and in addition, C values indicated low overall similarity in the composition of the communities. These results suggest that there is little interrelation between phytoplankton and benthos even in the shallow littoral zone.  相似文献

In the Laurentian Great Lakes, phytoplankton growth and biomass are secondarily limited by silica (Si), as a result of phosphorus (P) enrichment. Even modest levels of P enrichment can induce secondary Silimitation, which, in turn, promotes a shift from the native diatom phytoplankton flora to chlorophyte and cyanobacteria species. However, very little is known about the nutritional status of benthic populations and their response to nutrient enrichment. Two experiments were performed in the littoral zone of Lake Michigan where nutrients were delivered to in situ benthic algal (episammic and epilithic) assemblages using nutrient‐diffusing substrata. In order to test the hypothesis that benthic algae in Lake Michigan are Si limited, a 2 × 3 factorial experiment was used to deliver all combinations of Si, N, and P to resident assemblages growing on artificial substrata composed of natural (Si rich) versus calcium carbonate (Si poor) sand. A second experiment utilized a serial enrichment to evaluate the role of Si in mediating changes in taxonomic composition. These findings indicate that benthic algae in Lake Michigan exhibit signs of secondary Si limitation, and that their response to enrichment is similar to the phytoplankton. Moreover, natural sand substrata may provide a source of Si to resident benthic algae.  相似文献

Despite the destruction and total rearrangement of much of the area north of Mt St. Helens, many different species of algae became established in the aquatic systems located in the blast zone within 3–4 months after the eruption of May 18, 1980. Initial sites of intense algal activity were found in benthic regions associated with warm springs and in the littoral and phytoplanktonic communities of some small lakes. In the summers of 1980–81, overall phytoplankton numbers and activity were low in the large lakes closest to the crater (e.g. Spirit Lake). However, diatoms, blue-green and green algal isolates from these lakes were obtained in laboratory cultures on a reduced inorganic medium used to enumerate metal and sulfur oxidizing bacteria. Species of Nodularia, Pseudanabaena, Anabaena, Oscillatoria, Nitzschia, Tribonema, Chlamydomonas, Chlorella, and microflagellates (predominantly cryptomonads) were among the more common forms found in preserved samples or isolated in cultures.  相似文献

Omnivorous fish, such as the central stoneroller minnow (Campostoma anomalum(Rafinesque)), and crayfish often play important roles in the trophic dynamics of streams. The trophic role of these two omnivores has not been compared within a system even though they both consume algae, detritus and invertebrates and often co-occur in streams in the Midwestern United States. Natural abundance of 15N and 13C isotopes and a whole stream 15N-labeled ammonium chloride release were used to compare the trophic ecology of the central stoneroller minnow (Campostoma anomalum (Rafinesque)) and two species of crayfish (Orconectes neglectus (Faxon) and Orconectes nais (Faxon)) in a tallgrass prairie stream. The 15N and 13C values of Orconectes spp. were more similar to coarse benthic organic matter (CBOM) and filamentous green algae than to invertebrates, fine benthic organic matter (FBOM), and periphyton. Values for 15N and 13C in C. anomalum were more similar to grazer and collector invertebrates and filamentous green algae than to FBOM and periphyton. Results from a 15N tracer release also indicated a portion of algae and/or invertebrates were a component of nitrogen assimilated in Orconectes spp. and C. anomalum diets. Gut contents of C. anomalum were also analyzed. In contrast to stable isotope data, amorphous detritus was a significant component of C. anomalum guts, followed by diatoms and filamentous green algae. A significant percentage of invertebrate material was found in C. anomalum guts sampled in the spring. Experiments were conducted in artificial streams to determine if Orconectes spp. and C. anomalum could reduce epilithic algal biomass in small streams. Algal biomass on clay tile substrata was decreased relative to controls in artificial stream channels containing O. neglectus (3.4 fold, p=0.0002), C. anomalum (2.1 fold, p=0.0012), and both species combined (3.0 fold, p=0.0003). Results indicate that Orconectes spp. are functioning more as algal and detrital processors than as predators in Kings Creek. Isotope and gut content data show that C. anomalum includes invertebrates as well as algae and detritus in its diet. Both species have the potential to affect algal biomass and are important omnivores in the stream food web.  相似文献

We investigated how the relative availability of solar radiation in the presence or absence of grazing alters the ability of benthic algae to respond to nutrient enrichment in an Alaskan marsh. We used a factorial mesocosm experiment that included nutrient enrichment (enriched or control), grazing (grazed or ungrazed), and light (unshaded or shaded) to simulate shading by macrophytes early and late in the growing season, respectively. We found stronger effects of grazers and nutrients compared to light on benthic algal biomass and taxonomic composition. Algal biomass increased in nutrient‐enriched treatments and was reduced by grazing. Shading did not have an effect on algal biomass or taxonomic composition, but the concentration of chl a per algal biovolume increased with shading, demonstrating the ability of algae to compensate for changes in light availability. Algal taxonomic composition was more affected by grazer presence than nutrients or light. Grazer‐resistant taxa (basal filaments of Stigeoclonium) were replaced by diatoms (Nitzschia) and filamentous green algae (Ulothrix) when herbivores were removed. The interacting and opposing influences of nutrients and grazing indicate that the algal community is under dual control from the bottom‐up (nutrient limitation) and from the top‐down (consumption by herbivores), although grazers had a stronger influence on algal biomass and taxonomic composition than nutrient enrichment. Our results suggest that low light availability will not inhibit the algal response to elevated nutrient concentrations expected with ongoing climate change, but grazers rapidly consume algae following enrichment, masking the effects of elevated nutrients on algal production.

We demonstrated the effect of an aquatic herbivore on the spatial arrangement of benthic algal biomass within artificial stream channels. Transects of ceramic tiles were exposed to a gradient of snail (Physella) densities in a 30 d experiment. We observed positive effects of snails on the mean abundance of overstory algae (the filamentous chlorophyte Cladophora and associated epiphytes), an important benthic microhabitat in streams. Snails altered several aspects of the spatial arrangement of overstory algae. Snails reduced the strength of downstream gradients in overstory biomass, as well as residual variability around these gradients. Geostatistical analysis revealed that snails also reduced the strength of spatial dependence, and so reduced spatial heterogeneity of the overstory, at small scales (<40 cm). As a result, organisms inhabiting the overstory might experience a more fragmented habitat landscape at high snail densities. In addition, snails increased the scale of spatial dependence in understory algal biomass (algae remaining on tiles after overstory was removed) from 10 cm to 40 cm. Consumer effects on the spatial arrangement of a microhabitat argue for the inclusion of feedbacks between the biota and the environment in spatially-explicit models.  相似文献

Responses of stream algal biomass to nutrient enrichment were studied in two regions where differences in hydrologic variability cause great differences in herbivory. Around northwestern Kentucky (KY) hydrologic variability constrains invertebrate biomass and their effects on algae, but hydrologic stability in Michigan (MI) streams permits accrual of high herbivore densities and herbivory of benthic algae. Multiple indicators of algal biomass and nutrient availability were measured in 104 streams with repeated sampling at each site over a 2−month period. Many measures of algal biomass and nutrient availability were positively correlated in both regions, however the amount of variation explained varied with measures of biomass and nutrient concentration and with region. Indicators of diatom biomass were higher in KY than MI, but were not related to nutrient concentrations in either region. Chl a and % area of substratum covered by Cladophora were positively correlated to nutrient concentrations in both regions. Cladophora responded significantly more to nutrients in MI than KY. Total phosphorus (TP) and total nitrogen (TN) explained similar amounts of variation in algal biomass, and not significantly more variation in biomass than dissolved nutrient concentrations. Low N:P ratios in the benthic algae indicated N as well as P may be limiting their accrual. Most observed responses in benthic algal biomass occurred in nutrient concentrations between 10 and 30 μg TP l−1 and between 400 and 1000 μg TN l−1.  相似文献

Model experiments on a possibility that pathogenic enterobacteria Salmonella enteritidis (Gartneri) can grow on decaying algal mats with prevalence of the filamentous algae Cladophora glomerata (L.) Kütz were carried out. Samples of algal mats have been collected in the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland in the Baltic Sea. A bacterial culture of Salmonella enteritidis was placed into tubes containing samples of mats. The intensive growth of salmonella was noted in alga samples collected in the freshwater zone (salinity 0.2–1.5‰); growth was practically absent in the samples of algae collected in a zone with salinity 2–3‰, while salmonella remained viable in the control tubes with water without algae. The growth of coliform enterobacteria initially inhabited in the algal mats was discovered in all experiments. Studies carried out in 2009 show that the thickness of the algal mats in the costal zones of the Gulf of Finland reached 20 cm and their biomass reached a few tons per 1 km2. These experiments showed that dead algal mats stimulate the growth of enterobacteria in the littoral zone of the Baltic Sea, especially in the freshwater part, and can promote the development of these pathogenic microorganisms.  相似文献

The intertidal benthic algal communities of two sites located on opposite coasts of São Miguel Island (Azores), were studied over a 2-year period (September 1993–September 1995). At both sites (São Roque on the south coast and São Vicente on the north), the littoral region was surveyed from the upper intertidal down to the sublittoral fringe. The survey revealed five distinct zones, with a variable degree of overlapping. The two upper zones were characterized by animals (littorinids and barnacles, respectively). Lower down, algal communities formed three distinct zones: an upper Fucus spiralis/Gelidium microdon association, a more extensive turf zone, and a belt featuring erect or frondose algae. Upper in the eulittoral, the turf was mainly monospecific, and dominated by Caulacanthus ustulatus. The lower eulittoral turf was dominated by articulated coralline algae, the associated species differing between the two sites studied. Mainly erect algae (Pterocladiella, Asparagopsis, etc.) occurred furthest down the shore and extended into the nearby shallow sublittoral. Two intertidal communities were studied at each locality: the upper eulittoral (Caulacanthus turf in São Roque and the Fucus spiralis/Gelidium microdon association at São Vicente), and the lower eulittoral (the coralline turf). The lower littoral communities had a higher algal diversity. A general pattern was observed in the seasonal variation of biomass: the lower levels exhibited the higher values in late summer/early autumn, the period in which the upper levels had the lowest standing crops. Physical factors are proposed to account for this. No significant inter-annual variations could be detected, indicating relatively stable communities, at least on a short-term basis.  相似文献

Variation of polysaccharide concentration in irrigation-channel sediment was determined concurrently with biological, chemical and physical factors influencing the benthic algal community. Phenol-sulphuric acid method was used to measure polysaccharide concentration. Polysaccharide concentration, biomass of benthic algae, and species composition changed spatially and temporally. Fluctuations of total suspended solid (TSS) concentration and exposure of channel bed to direct sunlight had major effects on algal growth and polysaccharide production. Polysaccharide concentration was correlated to chlorophyll a concentration (r=0.73, P<0.001) and algal biomass (r=0.57, P<0.001). Fragilaria construens and Aulacoseira (Melosira) italica were the most common diatoms in the benthic flora. Chlorophyll a concentration in the sediment showed a strong negative correlation (r=-0.99, P<0.001) with the seasonal variation of TSS concentration in channel water. The polysaccharides produced by benthic microorganisms play a major role in clogging channel bed and thereby reducing seepage from earthen irrigation channels. Correlations between polysaccharide concentration and chlorophyll a (and algal biomass) further indicate the importance of benthic algae for polysaccharide production. Since availability of light to the algal flora is critical for the production of polysaccharides, the effect of clogging can be maximized by exposing the channel bed to direct sunlight during non-irrigation period (winter).  相似文献
