Population densities of mycorrhizal fungal propagules in a western Kentucky field highly productive for soybean were measured by bioassay throughout a soybean production season. The primary experimental variables were crop rotation (soybeans in 1985, then 2 years in corn, milo, fescue, or soybean, then soybean in 1988 on all plots when populations of propagules were determined) and soil fumigation with 67% methyl bromide/33% chloropicrin. Of the 20 species in three genera found, Glomus predominated both in terms of number of species and population densities. Most species of Glomus occurred at higher population densities in rotated plots than in continuous soybean plots. In continuous soybean plots, species of Gigaspora made up a much higher proportion of the mycorrhizal fungal community than in rotated crops. Species richness and diversity were lower, and dominance and equitability higher, in nonfumigated continuous soybean plots than in rotated plots early in the season, but the differences were not present at the end of the season. Soil fumigation killed most propagules in the upper 15 cm of soil, but after production of a crop of soybeans, populations of total propagules and most Glomus spp. recovered to prefumigation densities. However, Gigaspora margarita and Gigaspora gigantea did not recover similarly. Fumigation reduced species richness and diversity and increased dominance, but the effects were ameliorated by the end of the season. Colonization of roots was low during vegetative growth but increased rapidly after the onset of soybean reproduction. There was no evidence for mutualism during the early half of the season, perhaps due to high soil P and low dependency of soybean. Fumigation increased soybean yields. A stable mycorrhizal fungal community appeared to become established with continuous soybean production, and both crop rotation and soil fumigation disrupted the community.

Glasshouse and field experiments were conducted to determine the effects of biocides and rotation breaks on deleterious soil organisms associated with the poor early growth and subsequent yield decline of sugarcane grown in continuous monoculture. Fumigation of a soil that had been under sugarcane monoculture with minimal breaks for more than 30 years markedly improved the health and growth of the sugarcane sett and shoot root systems, increased the growth of the primary shoot and stimulated more and larger secondary shoots. It also reduced populations of culturable fungi in the rhizosphere of the sett roots and reduced colonization of the sett and shoot roots by lesion nematode (Pratylenchus zeae). Exposure of the developing sett root system for 14 days to mono-cultured sugarcane soil was sufficient to significantly retard subsequent plant growth. In field experiments, fungicide and nematicide (mancozeb + aldicarb), when applied together to land under sugarcane monoculture, was as effective as fumigation in improving early sugarcane growth and increasing sugarcane yields. Rotation breaks (alternate crops, sown pasture, bare fallow) that were in place for 54 months, increased sugarcane establishment and increased sugarcane yields to levels similar to that obtained following fumigation of land under sugarcane monoculture. Fumigation of land that had been under the rotation breaks gave plant growth responses that were in addition to that achieved by the breaks alone. A mancozeb + aldicarb treatment was as effective as fumigation in increasing sugarcane yields after a bare fallow break but accounted for only a portion of the fumigation response following the crop and pasture breaks. Improved plant nutrition may be a factor in the fumigation response following the crop and pasture breaks. Plant growth responses to fumigation and the manocozeb + aldicarb treatments that were manifested in final sugarcane yields (after one years growth) were evident as plant growth responses (sett root, shoot root and primary shoot dry weight) measured 54 days after planting. The experimental results support the concept that when sugarcane is grown as a monoculture, deleterious fungi and nematodes retard plant establishment and early plant growth and that this leads to reduced sugarcane yields.

We studied management strategies for western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, using transgenic corn, Zea mays L., from both a biological and an economic perspective. In areas with and without populations adapted to a 2-yr rotation of corn and soybean (rotation-resistant), the standard management strategy was to plant 80% of a cornfield (rotated and continuous) to a transgenic cultivar each year. In each area, we also studied dynamic management strategies where the proportion of transgenic corn increased over time in a region. We also analyzed management strategies for a single field that is the first to adopt transgenic corn within a larger unmanaged region. In all areas, increasing the expression of the toxin in the plant increased economic returns. In areas without rotation-resistance, planting 80% transgenic corn in the continuous cornfield each year generated the greatest returns with a medium toxin dose or greater. In areas with alleles for rotation-resistance at low initial levels, a 2-yr rotation of nontransgenic corn and soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr., may be the most economical strategy if resistance to crop rotation is recessive. If resistance to crop rotation is additive or dominant, planting transgenic corn in the rotated cornfield was the most effective strategy. In areas where rotation-resistance is already a severe problem, planting transgenic corn in the rotated cornfield each year was always the most economical strategy. In some cases the strategies that increased the proportion of transgenic corn in the region over time increased returns compared with the standard strategies. With these strategies the evolution of resistance to crop rotation occurred more rapidly but resistance to transgenic corn was delayed compared with the standard management strategy. In areas not managed by a regional norm, increasing the proportion of transgenic corn and increasing toxin dose in the managed field generally increased returns. In a sensitivity analysis, among the parameters investigated, only density-dependent survival affected the results.

A two-year trial was conducted to determine the effects of green manures and crop sequences on plant disease, streptomycete and bacterial densities, and inhibitory activity of indigenous streptomycetes against four target pathogens. Green manure treatments, buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum L.), canola (Brassica napus L.), sorghum-sudangrass (Sorghum bicolor) (L.) Moench × Sorghum sudanense (Piper) Stapf.), and fallow control were tested in conjunction with three crop sequences in a Phytophthora-infested soil placed in containers. Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), potato (Solanum tubersoum L.), or corn (Zea mays L.) was grown in the first year, and alfalfa was grown in all containers in the second year. Compared to fallow controls, alfalfa grown in sorghum-sudangrass- or buckwheat-treated soil had significantly greater stand counts and total biomass, respectively. In addition, alfalfa grown in fallow-treated soils had the greatest Phytophthora root rot as a function of stand count. Crop rotation also had a significant effect on alfalfa root rot and yield. Potato scab disease intensity was greatest on tubers grown in fallow-treated soils, while tubers grown in canola-treated soils had the highest yields (total tuber weight). Green-manure-treated soils tended to have greater streptomycete and bacterial densities than fallow-treated soils. In addition, buckwheat- or sorghum-sudangrass-treated soils had greater proportions of streptomycetes that were antagonistic against the target pathogens than fallow-treated soils. The proportion of antagonists in soil was negatively correlated with alfalfa root rot, and positively correlated with alfalfa stand counts. Inhibitory activity of the streptomycetes was also negatively correlated with potato scab and positively correlated with potato yield. These data suggest that green manures may provide a strategy for increasing pathogen inhibitory activity within the streptomycete community in soil, and, in conjunction with crop rotation, may contribute to the control of a diverse collection of soil-borne plant pathogens on multiple crop species.

The ability to prevent significant root feeding damage to corn, Zea mays L., by the western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, by crop rotation with soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr., has been lost in portions of the Corn Belt because this pest has adapted to laying eggs in soybean fields. Cuphea spp. has been proposed as a new broadleaf crop that may provide an undesirable habitat for rootworm adults because of its sticky surface and therefore may reduce or prevent oviposition in these fields. A 4-yr study (1 yr to establish seven rotation programs followed by 3 yr of evaluation) was conducted to determine whether crop rotation with Cuphea would provide cultural control of corn rootworm. In support of Cuphea as a rotation crop, fewer beetles were captured by sticky traps in plots of Cuphea over the 4 yr of this study compared with traps in corn and soybean, suggesting that fewer eggs may be laid in plots planted to Cuphea. Also, corn grown after Cuphea was significantly taller during vegetative growth, had significantly lower root damage ratings for 2 of 3 yr, and had significantly higher yields for 2 of 3 yr compared with continuous corn plots. In contrast to these benefits, growing Cuphea did not prevent economic damage to subsequent corn crops as indicated by root damage ratings > 3.0 recorded for corn plants in plots rotated from Cuphea, and sticky trap catches that exceeded the threshold of five beetles trap(-1) day(-1). Beetle emergence from corn plots rotated from Cuphea was significantly lower, not different and significantly higher compared with beetle emergence from continuous corn plots for 2002, 2003 and 2004 growing seasons, respectively. A high number of beetles were captured by emergence cages in plots planted to Cuphea, indicating that rootworm larvae may be capable of completing larval development by feeding on roots of Cuphea, although peak emergence lagged approximately 4 wk behind peak emergence from corn. Based on these data, it is unlikely that crop rotation with Cuphea will provide consistent, economical, cultural control of corn rootworm.

An experiment to evaluate the control of soybean cyst nematodes compared 1-year, 2-year, and 3-year nonhost rotations with continuous soybeans (Glycine max) in 0.2-ha plots. In a second 1-year rotation, the plots were planted to soybean or corn (Zea mays) after fumigation in the spring with a split application of 1,3-dichloropropene (748.2 liters/ha). The effects of the nematicide were apparent the first year. Soybean yield was 1,482 kg/ha compared to 233 kg/ha in the untreated plots. In the second year, the highest yielding plants (2,035 kg/ha) were those following 1 year of corn that had been treated the previous year; plants in untreated plots yielded 288 kg/ha. Average yield of soybean following 1 year of corn was 957 kg/ha compared to 288 kg/ha for continuous soybean. In the third year, the effects of the nematicide were still evident. Soybean plants in plots treated the first year, followed by corn, then soybean, yielded 1,044 kg/ha compared to 761 kg/ ha for soybean following 1 year of corn and 991 kg/ha for soybean following 2 years of corn. Plots planted to soybean for 3 consecutive years yielded 337 kg/ha. Nematicidal effects were no longer evident during the fourth year. Yields were most improved by the greatest number of years in the nonhost crop; highest yields in descending order were from plants following 3 years of corn, 2 years of corn, and 1 year of corn. Plots planted to soybean for 4 consecutive years yielded 130 kg/ha. Highly significant negative correlations occurred each year between initial nematode population densities and seed yield.

Effects of Crop Diversity on Agroecosystem Function: Crop Yield Response
Understanding the role of diversity in the functioning of ecosystems has important implications for agriculture. Previous agricultural research has shown that crop rotation and the use of cover crops can lead to increases in yield relative to monoculture; however, few studies have been performed within the broader context of diversity–ecosystem function theory and in the absence of chemical inputs. We performed a field experiment in SW Michigan, USA, in which we manipulated the number of crop species grown in rotation and as winter cover crops over a 3-year period to test if varying the number of species in a rotation affected grain yield, a critical metric of ecosystem function in row-crops. The experimental design was unique in that no fertilizer or pesticides were used, and the only management variable manipulated was number of species in the rotation, thus providing a strong comparison to grassland diversity–ecosystem function experiments. Treatments included continuous monocultures of three row-crops, corn Zea mays L., soybean Glycine max (L.) Merr., and winter wheat Triticum aestivum L., and 2- and 3-year annual rotations with and without cover crops (zero, one, or two legume/small grain species), encompassing a range of crop diversity from one to six species. Crop yields and weed biomass were measured annually for 3 years and plant available soil nitrogen was measured over the course of the growing season in the final year of the study. In all 3 years, corn grain yield increased linearly in response to the number of crops in the rotation. Corn yields in the highest diversity treatment (three crops, plus three cover crops) were over 100% higher than in continuous monoculture and were not significantly different from the county average for each of the 3 years despite the absence of chemical inputs. Corn yields in the diversity treatments were strongly correlated with the availability of inorganic soil nitrogen, which was likely influenced by the number of different legume species (crops and cover crops) present in the rotation. In soybean and winter wheat, yield differences among crop diversity treatments were also significant, but of lower magnitude (32 and 53%, respectively), and showed little direct relationship to the number of crop species grown in a rotation. Results demonstrate that agricultural research motivated by ecological theory can provide important insights into the functioning of agroecosystems and enhance our understating of the linkages between diversity and ecosystem function. Importantly, these results suggest that reduced chemical inputs do not necessarily result in yield penalties and provide support for incorporation of crop or species diversity when determining how ecosystem services can be included in food, fiber, and biofuel production.

Endophytic bacterial systems governing red clover growth and development
Endophytic competent bacteria capable of promoting both beneficial and detrimental growth responses in red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) were recovered from three adjacent areas of farmland each having a different cropping history — continuous red clover, continuous potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.) or a 2 yr rotation of red clover and potatoes. The population composition of these rhizobacteria was altered by the various crop sequences. The greatest instance of significant growth responses (beneficial or detrimental) occurred with those bacteria derived from the clover-potato soil, suggesting increased interactive ‘competition’ among bacterial populations at the ‘interface’ between different crop rotations. Whether bacterial strains promoted or inhibited growth appeared to depend on the cropping history and prior exposure of pre-bacterised clover plants to the natural microflora in the peat-based growing media. The interaction between bacterial colonists influenced plant trait expression to the degree that some characteristics were completely masked. Improvements in plant growth were interpreted as an allelopathic side-effect of the competition between endophytes for the same ecological niche, from which the plant inadvertently benefits.

Isolation of microorganisms, screening for desirable characters and selection of efficient strains are important steps to optimize high crop yields and improve the sustainability of the ecosystem. The objective of this study was isolate and identify Azopirillum spp. with enhanced potential to promote plant growth among the natural bacterial population associated with rhizosphere soil, roots and stem of maize collected from five maize-growing regions within the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil. Diazotrophic microorganisms were isolated using semi-solid N-free and solid selective media NFb. In order to select the most efficient isolates as candidates for plant growth promotion, the purified bacterial strains were studied for cell morphology, and Gram staining, streptomycin resistance, as well as screened for their potential for nitrogen fixation and auxin production under sterile conditions. Among 224 isolates obtained 121 were able to fix nitrogen and produce auxin. The 30 most promising isolates produced indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) ranging in concentration from 3.51 μg to 246.69 μg IAA mg−1. Nitrogen fixation ranged from 15.43 μg to 95.21 μg of N mg protein−1 day−1 From the 30 most productive isolates, chromosomal DNA was extracted and a portion of the nifH gene was amplified and sequenced. Twenty-nine isolates were found to be similar to the Azospirillum genus and one isolate was found to be similar to Herbaspirillum seropedicae. These bacterial isolates revealed potential to increase crop productivity, however field crop experiments in Rio Grande do Sul climatic conditions should be done in order to formulate recommendations for their use as inoculants.

Divergence of mycorrhizal fungal communities in crop production systems
Mycorrhizal fungi are present in all arable soils and colonize nearly all crops and weed pests of crops. They may be involved as mutualists or pathogens of crops in well known but poorly understood phenomena such as crop rotation and green manure effects on soil productivity. Crop change effects on mycorrhizal fungal community parameters were evaluated in three field experiments. In Experiment 1, soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr. cv. Douglas) was grown continuously or rotated with corn (Zea mays L.), milo (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench), or fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb cv. Johnstone) for two years, then soybean was grown on all plots. Continuous soybean plots were dominated byGigaspora spp., while rotated crops were dominated byGlomus spp. Differences in communities and community indices of continuous soybean and rotated plots were reduced after growing soybeans on rotated plots. In Experiment 2, a fescue sod was plowed and pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum Leeke) or crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop.) grown. Both hosts resulted in great changes in populations of individual species, decreases in community dominance, and increases in community diversity and equitability. Crabgrass also resulted in reduced species richness. In Experiment 3, tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) or fescue was planted on adjacent tracts of land with a long-term history of either fescue (30 yr) or sorghum-sudangrass (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench. ×S. sudanense (Piper) Staph.) (3 yr). The long-term cropping history had major effects on the mycorrhizal fungal communities which were related to the expression of mycorrhizal stunt disease of tobacco. Changes occurred in these communities in response to either current-season crop. These experiments suggest that crop rotation causes large changes in mycorrhizal fungal communities, that these changes may be involved in the rotation effect on soil productivity, and that design of cropping systems should take mycorrhizal fungal communities into consideration.

We expanded a simulation model of the population dynamics and genetics of the western corn rootworm for a landscape of corn, soybean, and other crops to study the simultaneous development of resistance to both crop rotation and transgenic corn. Transgenic corn effective against corn rootworm was recently approved in 2003 and may be a very effective new technology for control of western corn rootworm in areas with or without the rotation-resistant variant. In simulations of areas with rotation-resistant populations, planting transgenic corn to only rotated cornfields was a robust strategy to prevent resistance to both traits. In these areas, planting transgenic corn to only continuous fields was not an effective strategy for preventing adaptation to crop rotation or transgenic corn. In areas without rotation-resistant phenotypes, gene expression of the allele for resistance to transgenic corn was the most important factor affecting the development of resistance to transgenic corn. If the allele for resistance to transgenic corn is recessive, resistance can be delayed longer than 15 yr, but if the resistant allele is dominant then resistance usually developed within 15 yr. In a sensitivity analysis, among the parameters investigated, initial allele frequency and density dependence were the two most important factors affecting the evolution of resistance. We compared the results of this simulation model with a more complicated model and results between the two were similar. This indicates that results from a simpler model with a generational time-step can compare favorably with a more complex model with a daily time-step.

The effect of methyl bromide and P fertilization on the growth of four agricultural crops in a P-sorbing soil was studied. Harvestable yields and P tissue content were significantly lower for celery (Apium graveolens L.), onion (Allium cepa L.) and pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) following fumigation. P fertilization up to 330 kg P ha−1 as superphosphate could not reverse this effect. The highest P fertilizer treatment had 25.4 μg g−1 bicarbonate-extractable P and 0.26 μg g−1 water extractable P. This P level produced acceptable commercial yields when vesicular arbuscular mycorrhizae (VAM) were present (non-fumigated) and indicate the importance of the VAM association for these crops. In contrast, melon (Cucumis melo L.) growth was slightly greater following soil fumigation at all P fertilization rates. These findings indicate that crop VAM dependence and efficacy of VAM biotypes must be considered as essential components for P fertilization recommendations on fumigated P-sorbing soils. We investigated the effect of planting density on soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) yield in glasshouse and field experiments. Because net canopy photosynthesis increases with increasing plant density, we hypothesized that increasing planting density would result in increasing rates of dinitrogen fixation in soybeans and higher yields per unit land area.In glasshouse studies, Wayne variety soybeans were planted in 10-cm diameter pots, 1 plant pot-1 in matrices of 10-, 15-, 20-, 25-, or 30-cm equidistant intervals. Bradyrhizobium japonicum inoculum was added to half of the plants in each treatment. Replicate measurements of total stem height, internode lengths, leaf mass, stem mass, root mass, nodule number, nodule mass, and nitrogenase activity were obtained at 3, 6, and 9 weeks post-emergence. Fruits were harvested and counted at week 14. As planting density increased there were (1) altered morphology and growth rates, (2) increased apparent specific nodule activity (SNA), (3) decreased nodule number and mass, and (4) nearly constant fruit and seed production/plant. Expressed on a unit area basis, nitrogen influx and yield increased geometrically as planting density increased, with maximum values observed for 10-cm plantings.Field studies of Wayne, Stein, Williams, and Gold Harvest soybean varieties were made in 1985. Plots were established containing 100 plants spaced at 10-, 20-, and 30-cm distances. Measurements made during the growing season and at harvest established the same relative trends identified from the glasshouse studies. Increasing plant densities resulted in higher yields per unit land. Varietal differences were almost significant.

Perennial, cellulosic bioenergy crops represent a risky investment. The potential for adoption of these crops depends not only on mean net returns, but also on the associated probability distributions and on the risk preferences of farmers. Using 6‐year observed crop yield data from highly productive and marginally productive sites in the southern Great Lakes region and assuming risk neutrality, we calculate expected breakeven biomass yields and prices compared to corn (Zea mays L.) as a benchmark. Next we develop Monte Carlo budget simulations based on stochastic crop prices and yields. The crop yield simulations decompose yield risk into three components: crop establishment survival, time to maturity, and mature yield variability. Results reveal that corn with harvest of grain and 38% of stover (as cellulosic bioenergy feedstock) is both the most profitable and the least risky investment option. It dominates all perennial systems considered across a wide range of farmer risk preferences. Although not currently attractive for profit‐oriented farmers who are risk neutral or risk averse, perennial bioenergy crops have a higher potential to successfully compete with corn under marginal crop production conditions.

Fusarium moniliforme Sheldon is an economically important pathogen of corn (Zea mays L.) which causes stalk, root and ear rot. Several mycotoxins have also been isolated, identified and implicated in both animal and human toxicoses. The fungus can be disseminated in symptomless corn seed and can also survive in crop residues in the soil. Asymptomatic infection may be related to different corn cultivars, fungal strains, and environmental factors. Symptomatic expression of pathogenicity may vary, but usually the result of such infections is death of the plant. The greatest concern is the asymptomatic infection, since it is in this form that fungal toxins may surreptitiously enter animal and human food chains. F. moniliforme produces both fusaric acid, which is phytotoxic to corn and interferes with seed germination, and plant growth regulators that may affect pathogenicity of the fungus or be associated with the production of mycotoxins. Other metabolites, including fusarin C, moniliformin, and the fumonisins, may or may not be phytotoxic, but are associated with animal and human toxicoses. The control of F. moniliforme in corn is therefore quite important. One potential means to accomplish this reduction is biocontrol by the application of antagonistic rhizobacteria to corn kernels at planting. To be effective the bacteria must be able to colonize the corn root system and be able to prevent root infection by successful competing with F. moniliforme which may be accomplished by siderophore and or antibiotic activity.

The effect of crop sequence on parasitism of second-stage juveniles (J2) of Heterodera glycines by Hirsutella rhossiliensis was investigated. Data were collected from plots of a long-term crop rotation experiment established in 1982. Crop sequences included (i) continuous monoculture of corn and soybean; (ii) annual rotation of the two crops; and (iii) 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 years of each crop following 5 years of the other crop. The nematode J2 density and percentage of J2 parasitized by the fungus were determined at planting, midseason, and end of season in 1997 and 1998. A significant effect of the crop sequence on parasitism of J2 was observed at midseason in both years and at end of season in 1998. In plots of first-year soybean following 5 years of corn, fungal parasitism increased from an undetectable level at planting to 2% and 4% of J2 parasitized by ends of season in 1997 and 1998, respectively. Fungal parasitism was similar in plots of second-through-fifth-year soybean after 5 years of corn and in plots of soybean monoculture. Parasitism of J2 in the soybean plots in annual rotation with corn increased from undetectable and 2% at planting to 6% and 23% at midseason in 1997 and 1998, respectively. The effect of crop sequence on the fungal parasitism of J2 may be attributed to a density-dependent relationship between the parasite and its host. Season also affected the fungal parasitism; percentage of J2 parasitized by the fungus was the highest at midseason and the lowest at planting.

Planting dates of transgenic Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner (Bt) corn were adjusted to determine the utility in managing European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner). Transgenic Bt (events 176 and Bt11) corn and non-Bt corn were planted at three different times to use the early- and late- planted corn as a potential trap crop for ovipositing European corn borer moths. Grain moisture and yields were recorded to determine the economic benefits of Bt corn planted on the different dates, based on European corn borer populations and corn damage data collected before harvest. Data were recorded from three locations in southwestern, central, and northeastern Iowa for three summers (1996-1998). Economic benefits are discussed in relation to EILs and yield results. Adjusting the planting dates of Bt and non-Bt corn provided variable economic differences among planting dates in northern Iowa; however, greater economic benefits were realized when Bt corn was planted late during the planting sequence in central and southwestern Iowa. These results suggest that planting corn should be conducted in a timely manner and, if delayed or required to plant late, planting Bt corn would likely provide greater economic benefits. Although yield and economic variability were high, using Bt corn in combination with planting date adjustments may be a viable option for managing European corn borer.
