Male pipefish prefer dominant over attractive females   总被引:2,自引:3,他引:2  
Animals may obtain information guiding their choice betweenpotential partners from observing competitive interactionsand displays between them, or from displays directed at thechoosing individual. In the sex-role reversed pipefish Syngnathustyphle females display a temporary ornament (a color pattern)to other females as well as to males. We have previously shown that display of female ornaments per se is attractive to males.Here we show that information from competitive displays canoverride such direct attraction displays as signals in thepartner choice process. In a mate choice experiment, an enclosedmale could choose between two females. On the first experimentalday, females could interact freely, while on the second daythey were isolated from each other. When female-female competitionwas allowed, the ornament display was directed more to theother female than to the male: Time competing, rather thantime courting the male, correlated with ornament display duration.However, ornament display under competition and ornament displayin the absence of competition did not correlate significantly.In fact, females competing more intensively on day one displayedthe ornament less on day two. Furthermore, the ornament displayduring the first, but not the second, day predicted male matechoice on the second day. Thus, males remembered previous informationfrom competitive displays and used it rather than immediateinformation from displays in the absence of female-female competition.We suggest that competitive displays more reliably signal female quality as compared to noncompetitive ones, and that males benefitfrom mating with dominant females.  相似文献

In the pipefish Syngnathus typhle sex roles are reversed, thatis, females compete more intensely than males over mates. However,competition over mates among individuals of one sex does notnecessarily prevent members of that same sex from being choosy,and choosiness in the other sex does not prevent competitionwithin it. In an experiment we allowed a female pipefish tochoose freely between two males, after which we released themales and let the three interact. Comparisons with earlier resultsshow that both sexes courted partners and competed with consexuals.However, females courted more often than did males, and courtshipwas more frequent in treatments involving large individualsthan in treatments with small individuals. Males competed amongthemselves for access to mates but for a shorter duration thanfemales in the same situation. Males displayed an ornament towardsfemales but not to males during mating competition. Females,however, used their ornament in both contexts. Females did notalways mate with the male of their previously made choice, whichwe interpret as females being constrained by male-male competition,male motivation to mate, or both. Thus, in this sex-role reversedspecies, mate choice in the more competitive sex may be circumventedand even overruled by mate competition and mating willingnessin the least competitive sex. Hence, sex roles should not beconsidered as sexes being either choosy or competitive but ratherthat males and females may exhibit different combinations ofchoice and competition.  相似文献

If mate choice is costly, an individual may reduce the costsof choice by observing and copying the mate choice of others.Although copying has received much attention during the past10 years, evidence of copying is not very strong, partly becauseof problems with distinguishing copying from other mechanismscreating similar mating patterns. I conducted an aquarium experimentusing the deep-snouted pipefish Syngnathus typhle, a specieswith reversed sex roles and mutual mate choice. I tested whethercopying occurred both during male and female mate choice. Theresults showed that males, but not females, displayed more towardan individual, which they perceived as popular among others,and this was interpreted as male mate choice copying. Whilebeing the first evidence of copying in a sex-role–reversedspecies, the sex difference in behavior mirrors the sex-rolepattern and begs the question whether we should predict copyingonly in females in other species with mutual choice but conventionalsex roles.  相似文献

A sexually selected signal may serve a dual function being bothattractive to mates and deterring rivals. Presently, there arefew unambiguous demonstrations of an ornament functioning inboth a mate choice and mate competition context and none regardingfemale ornaments. We have shown earlier that a temporary ornament,a striped pattern, in a sex-role reversed female pipefish, Syngnathustyphle, attracts males. Here we show that this ornament alsointimidates rival females: in one experiment a male could interactwith either 1 or 2 females. Latency until copulation was longerwhen 2, rather than 1, females were present. Moreover, when2 females were present, competition lasted longer and time untilmating took place increased when females displayed their ornamentsmore equally. In another experiment, a focal female could see1 stimulus female and 1 stimulus male, the latter 2 being unawareof each other. The ornament of the stimulus female was manipulated,either strengthened by being painted black or left unalteredby being sham-painted. As a result, focal females experiencingblack-painted stimulus females decreased courtship as well ascompetitive activities compared with focal females seeing sham-paintedfemales. Moreover, focal females seeing black-painted femalesdisplayed less of their own ornament compared with controls.This decrease was due to a decrease in display toward malesrather than to stimulus females. Thus, this female ornamentindeed has a dual function, attracting mates and deterring rivals.In addition, the social costs invoked by this intimidating effecton rivals may help to maintain signal honesty.  相似文献

Animals are expected to trade-off current and future reproductionin order to maximize lifetime reproductive success. Old individualsmay accept higher risks during courtship and mate choice astheir residual reproductive value (RRV) diminishes (the terminalinvestment hypothesis). Alternatively, young individuals maybe forced to take higher risks during courtship to compensatefor their lower competitiveness and/or attractiveness (the compensationhypothesis). In this study, we used the sex-role reversed pipefishSyngnathus typhle to test how mate choice and courtship behaviorof males with different RRV were affected by an increase inpredation risk. Males of different ages were given the opportunityto court and choose between 2 partners. In half of the trials,a predator was present in a separate aquarium. We found no supportfor the terminal investment hypothesis: no difference in responseto the increased predation risk by males of different ages wasevident. In agreement with the compensation hypothesis, youngmales invested more in courtship behavior compared with oldermales. In addition, in the absence of a predator, we found thata high female activity was important for male mate choice decisions.During increased predation risk, this relationship was, however,reversed and males preferred less active, and thus less conspicuous,partners. This suggests that both female activity and size areimportant factors for male mating decisions in this speciesand that these decisions mainly are affected by predation riskand advantages in mate acquisition.  相似文献

In the broad‐nosed pipefish Syngnathus typhle, brooding males positioned themselves significantly more often towards the warmer part (18° C) of an aquarium, whereas females were indifferent in this respect. Research on the role of parasites in sexual selection has focusedmainly on host mate choice favoring relatively unparasitizedmales. But parasites can also generate variance in host reproductivesuccess by influencing the ability of individual hosts to directlycompete among themselves for mates or fertilizations, a subjectarea that has received far less attention. We demonstrate experimentallythat parasitism by mites can drive sexual selection by way ofa novel mechanism involving male competition: physical inhibitionof host copulation. Mite resistance in natural populations isheritable, emphasizing the evolutionary potential of parasite-mediatedsexual selection in this system and indicating that femalesshould be receiving indirect fitness benefits as a result ofthis process. We show that parasitism by mites, Macrochelessubbadius, reduces mating success of male Drosophila nigrospiracula.Smaller males were more strongly compromised, identifying hostbody size as a tolerance trait. As parasite load increased,the rate at which males attempted to copulate but failed becauseof obstruction by mites increased. When mites were removed frominfested males, host mating success was restored. Thus, thephysical presence of the mites per se generates differentialmating success, in this case by interrupting the normal flowof mating behaviors. This study elucidates a potent mechanismof parasite-mediated sexual selection in a system wherein parasiteresistance is demonstrably heritable, and as such expands ourunderstanding of the evolutionary potential of sexual selection.  相似文献

The handicap principle proposes that male sexual ornaments anddisplays provide honest indicators of quality. Female preferencefor high-quality males, however, may be driven not only by geneticbenefits but also by indirect benefits. We investigated theimpact of parasitism on morphological, ornamental, and behavioralcharacteristics of male and female blue-black grassquits (Volatiniajacarina) in captivity. First, we tested whether male displaysand morphology were influenced by parasitism. Second, we assessedif females were attentive to variation in male morphology anddisplays linked to parasitism. Third, we tested whether parasitismin females influenced health and mate preferences. We maintained2 groups of birds in captivity: nonmedicated birds developedhigh levels of coccidian parasitism, whereas medicated birdswere free of parasitism. Parasitized males developed, relativeto nonparasitized males, lower weight/tarsus indices and mass.They also showed relative deficiencies in their displays, withless persistence and lower rates. Despite the negative effectsof parasitism on males, females did not prefer nonparasitizedmales. This held for both parasitized and nonparasitized females.Our data suggest that coccidian parasitism has adverse effectson morphological condition and expression of displays. Theseeffects, however, appear not to be attended to by females; moreover,female mate preferences appear not to be impacted by the threatof parasitism. It thus seems that female mate preferences maynot depend only on sexual characters affected by parasitismin this species.  相似文献

If more females than males are available for mating in the breedingpopulation (i.e., the operational sex ratio, OSR, is femalebiased), males can afford to be choosy. In the pipefish (Syngnathustyphle) females compete for males, who are choosy. In natureOSRs are typically female biased, but may occasionally be malebiased. In a series of experiments, males were allowed to choosebetween a large and a small female under a perceived excessof either males or females. Under female bias, males preferredthe large female: they spent more time close to her than tothe small female; they courted the large female sooner thanthe small; and they tended to copulate sooner and more oftenwith the large female. Under male bias all these differencesvanished and males mated at random with respect to female size.Males reproduced at a faster rate under male than under femalebias because they received more eggs in their brood pouches.Thus, males switched from maximizing mate quality (i.e., beingchoosy) to minimizing the risk of not reproducing (i.e., beingquick) as the OSR became male biased.  相似文献

To investigate behavioral or morphological traits importantas mate choice cues, we measured selection differentials (s)as the covariances between each trait and male mating success,and directional selection gradients (J3) from multiple linearregression of the standardized traits on male mating success.Data from two leks in four consecutive years were included,and the annual data were analyzed separately. The main findingsare: (1) the distribution of male mating success proved to beless skewed than those found in many other lekking species,(2) only a few traits yielded significant selection gradients,(3) the importance of age on male mating success changed acrossyears, (4) females may use traits with a high variance as matechoice cues, and (5) individual males achieved similar matingsuccesses between years. Attendance and age were the traitsmost consistently correlated with male mating success, but notraits showed significant selection gradients in all years.Our results indicate that variable sexual selection pressuresexisted between years, but the high correlation found betweenthe mating success of individual males in successive seasonsalso indicates that permanent differences in male traits areimportant. Male-biased dimorphism in body size is usually attributed tosexual selection acting on males, through either male competitionor female choice. Brown antechinuses (Antechinus stuartii) aresexually dimorphic in size, and heavier males are known to siremore offspring in the wild. We investigated four possible mechanismsthat might explain this large-male reproductive advantage. Wetested if there is a female preference for large males, a femalepreference for dominant males, if larger males compete moreeffectively for mates, and if there is a survival advantagefor large males during the mating season. We established nestinggroups of males in captivity and conducted mate choice trialsin which males from nesting groups either could or could notinteract. We assessed male dominance rank and recorded survivaltimes after mating. Females did not prefer larger males directly.The results suggest that the other three mechanisms of sexualselection tested account for the large-male advantage: largemales competed more successfully for mates, so were sociallydominant; females rejected subordinates (males they saw losingtwice in contests to previous mates); and dominant males survivedfor longer after their first mating. Females judged male rankbased on direct observation of male competitive interactionsat the time of mating and apparently could not distinguish rankfrom male scent. Effects of size and dominance on male reproductivesuccess are not confounded by age because male antechinusesare semelparous.  相似文献

The differences in potential reproductive rate between the sexescan be used to predict the operational sex ratio and the patternsand intensity of mating competition and hence sexual selectionin a population. This article describes how one environmentalcomponent, temperature, affects potential reproductive ratesof the two sexes in the paternally brooding, sex-role reversedpipefish (Syngnathus typhle). Males brooded embryos much longer(on average 58 days) in cold water (about 10°C) than inwarmer water (35 days at about 15°C). As a consequence,the potential reproductive rate (number of eggs brooded perday) of males was significantly higher in warm water. In females,however, potential reproductive rate, i.e., number of eggs producedper day given an unlimited access to mates, was not significantlydifferent between temperatures. In both sexes, potential reproductiverate was positively related to body size. At both temperatures,females had the potential to reproduce faster than males. Asa result, the operational sex ratio will become female biasedand sex-roles reversed, as is the case in this species. Sincetemperature differently influenced the potential reproductiverates of males and females, with the sexual difference largerat lower temperatures, more intense female-female competitionis predicted at low temperatures.  相似文献

Current tests of the bright male hypothesis focus on assaysof adult disease resistance and their relation to male traitdevelopment and female choice. We suggest that if parasiteshave significant harmful effects on juvenile stages of a host,then females selecting males that effectively signal juvenileparasite resistance may gain a significant "good genes" benefit.Currently, there is no information on juvenile and adult infectionor resistance in the same male and whether adult male displayssignal juvenile parasite resistance. In the present study, wemeasure infection of the ectoparasitic louse, Myrsidea ptilonorhynchi,in individual male satin bowerbirds (Ptilonorhynchus violaceus)both as juveniles and nine or more years later as adults. Wetest hypotheses that examine the role of juvenile parasite infectionin mediating sexual selection. We found that (1) juvenile infectionis higher than adult infection in the same individuals, (2)adult males able to hold display sites have lower juvenile infection,and (3) juvenile and adult infection in the same individualsare not significantly correlated. In addition, comparisons amonga larger set of individuals from a single year show that bloodand ectoparasite infections are highly correlated, and bothdecrease with male age and are inversely related to male courtshipsuccess. These results, combined with the evidence that femalesmate exclusively with bower-holding males support the hypothesisthat females use adult male display traits to identify maleswith a high level of juvenile disease resistance. We suggestthat effective tests of the bright male hypothesis should include(1) assessment of infection resistance in both subadult andadult life history stages, (2) tests of whether differencesin age-specific resistance are indicated in adult male displays,and (3) tests to determine if females attend to these traitsin mate choice. Although these requirements increase the difficultyof testing the bright male hypothesis, they are necessary fora more accurate assessment of the effects of parasites on maledisplay and female choice.  相似文献

Most theoretical research in sexual selection has focused on indirect selection. However, empirical studies have not strongly supported indirect selection. A well-established finding is that direct benefits and costs exert a strong influence on the evolution of mate choice. We present an analytical model in which unilateral mate choice evolves solely by direct sexual selection on choosiness. We show this is sufficient to generate the evolution of all possible levels of choosiness, because of the fundamental trade-off between mating rate and mating benefits. We further identify the relative searching time (RST, i.e. the proportion of lifetime devoted to searching for mates) as a predictor of the effect of any variable affecting the mating rate on the evolution of choosiness. We show that the RST: (i) allows one to make predictions about the evolution of choosiness across a wide variety of mating systems; (ii) encompasses all alternative variables proposed thus far to explain the evolution of choosiness by direct sexual selection; and (iii) can be empirically used to infer qualitative differences in choosiness.  相似文献

Although key to sexual selection theories, condition dependence has proven a challenging area of empirical research. It is expected that availability of resources will affect both mean and variation of sexual trait expression, with lower mean and greater variation in harsher environments. Here, I manipulated the environment in a laboratory population of Drosophila bunnanda to test for condition dependence of sexually selected traits. Sexually successful and unsuccessful males differed in how the environment affected sexual trait expression. Specifically, sexual trait attractiveness declined more rapidly with declining resources in sexually unsuccessful males, consistent with the expectation that low quality males were less able to meet the greater signalling costs associated with harsher environments. This study illustrates the potential insights into condition dependence that might be gained through considering sexual trait expression and mating success within the same manipulative experimental design.  相似文献

Investigations of parasite-mediated sexual selection have concentratedon the effects of parasites on males. Differences in femalesusceptibility to parasitic infection may also cause variationin reproductive behavior. I propose two alternative hypothesesto explain how infected females may alter their mate samplingbehavior. In the first hypothesis, infected females sample fewerprospective mates because chronic parasitic infection imposesenergetic costs that limit the time and calories that a femalecan expend in mate searching. A novel alternative hypothesisis that females recognize their own susceptibility to infectionand thus invest more time searching for a male phenotype thatindicates he offers genes complementary to her genome. In recombination,these good genes would allow her offspring to better resistparasites despite their mother's susceptibility. I examinedthe mate sampling behavior of experimentally infected wild turkeyhens when presented with an array of males, and compared themto control hens. Infected females did not invest more time assessingindividuals, did not wait longer to choose a male, nor werethey less likely to solicit during the trial. They did differfrom control females in that they visited more males beforesoliciting copulation and exhibited different preference functionsfor snood length. These results suggest that females are notso energetically restricted by latent coccidia infection thatthey must hurry to find a mate. Instead, it appears that infectedfemales assess a larger set of males as prospective mates, perhapsto increase the opportunity to obtain complementary genes forparasite resistance.  相似文献
