We compared the floral morphologies and pollinator fauna and morphologies of Hosta longipes var. longipes on the main Japanese island of Honshu and var. latifolia on the Izu Islands to examine the differentiation processes of H. longipes in the island system. The corolla length was shorter on the southern Izu Islands than on the main island and northern Izu Islands. However, the size of other flower parts of H. longipes did not simply decrease across main island Honshu and the Izu Islands, unlike other Izu endemic plant species studied previously. Instead, the floral morphology showed a complicated variation pattern. Pollinator fauna of H. longipes on the Izu Islands varied more widely than those on the main island. The diverse pollinator fauna may have influenced the morphological differentiation of H. longipes on these islands.

After Schmidt’s discovery of the spawning area of the Atlantic eels Anguilla anguilla and A. rostrata, the search for the Japanese eel A. japonica began in the Pacific Ocean. In 1991, the spawning area of the Japanese eel was determined to be the western North Pacific. Because of enthusiastic research, eggs and maturing eels have been collected in the Japanese eel. These findings are the first for one of the 19 freshwater eels. The population sizes of the Japanese and Atlantic eels are linearly decreasing. Thus, these eel population sizes are considered outside of safe biological limits, and the current fisheries are not sustainable. Artificial propagation has not yet succeeded for the freshwater eels. Stock assessment and management of the European eel have received increasing attention; however, such assessments and management of the Japanese eel have not yet been seriously considered. This paper is an overview of the results of intensive spawning ground investigations of the Japanese eel and describes how the outcomes of these studies have contributed not only to biological interests but also to stock enhancement. During the past 20 years of expeditions, noticeable findings have only been collected for wild eggs and mature adult specimens in spite of the expenditure of large research grants and the large amounts of time invested. The outcomes throughout an expedition do not necessarily contribute to the development and improvement of artificial breeding techniques and stock enhancement. Thus, eel research should be more focused on the studies related to eel stock management.

Ancient mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mainly from Jomon Period Sus scrofa bone specimens (6,100-1,700 years old) was examined to clarify the genetic relationships between prehistoric and contemporary S. scrofa on Hokkaido, Honshu, Sado, and Izu islands of the Japanese Archipelago. Phylogenetic analysis of the mtDNA control region (574 bp) and analysis of pairwise nucleotide differences between prehistoric and contemporary S. scrofa sequences showed the following relationships between these groups: (1) a group genetically similar to contemporary Japanese wild boars was found mainly on Honshu Island, Hokkaido Island, and the Izu Islands, and (2) a monophyletic group distinct from contemporary Japanese wild boars was found on Sado Island. These results suggest that prehistoric people introduced S. scrofa from Honshu Island to Hokkaido Island and the Izu Islands. The estimated divergence times between the prehistoric Sado group and the other prehistoric S. scrofa is approximately congruent with the geological isolation of Sado Island from Honshu Island. Our results suggest that this extinct S. scrofa population was present on Sado Island as recently as around 2,000 years ago.

After analyzing all the collection data for larvae of the Japanese eel, Anguilla japonica, in the western North Pacific, we found that the spawning site of this species appears to be near three seamounts in the West Mariana Ridge, 2000–3000km away from their freshwater habitats. These seamounts are located in the westward flow of the North Equatorial Current and are hypothesized to provide cues for migrating silver eels and to serve as possible aggregation sites for spawning. Back-calculated birth dates based on otolith microstructure of leptocephali indicate that the Japanese eel does not spawn continuously during the long spawning season from April to November, but is synchronized to spawn periodically once a month during new moon. This lunar periodicity of spawning and the seamount spawning hypothesis are new developments in the millennium-old mystery of eel spawning that has fascinated naturalists since the time of Aristotle.

We compared the floral morphologies, floral scents, and flower visitor compositions of Weigela coraeensis var. coraeensis on the Japanese mainland and its variety fragrans endemic to the Izu Islands to examine the differentiation process of W. coraeensis var. fragrans. The corolla lengths of W. coraeensis were smaller on the Izu Islands than those on the mainland and decreased gradually with the distance from the mainland, probably resulting from changes in pollinator fauna. A total of 13 volatile compounds were identified in the floral scent analyses, and limonene was produced at the highest level, although the floral scents were not different between var. coraeensis and var. fragrans. In this study, it was suggested that the pollinator fauna peculiar to the Izu Islands influenced the morphological differentiation of W. coraeensis var. fragrans.

Reproductive behavior and social organization of the labrid fish Halichoeres melanochir were studied at Miyake-jima, Izu Islands, Japan. ♂♂ set up contiguous territories from early to mid-afternoon daily during the breeding season, with ♂♂ at the center of the spawning site experiencing significantly higher spawning success than those at the periphery. Unlike other labrids with lek-like mating systems previously reported, H. melanochir is sexually monochromatic and shows only minimal sexual size-dimorphism. The spawning behavior and mating system are described and compared with current theories on labrid reproductive strategies.

Aim To provide insights into genetic differentiation between insular endemic Weigela coraeensis var. fragrans and its progenitor variety W. coraeensis var. coraeensis, the population genetic structure of both varieties was examined, and factors promoting genetic differentiation between the two taxa were explored. Location The natural range of W. coraeensis (sensu lato) throughout mainland Japan (Honshu) and the Izu Islands. Methods The analysis included 349 and 504 individuals across the mainland (Honshu) and the Izu Islands, respectively, using 10 allozyme and 10 microsatellite loci. The population genetic structure of W. coraeensis was assessed by analysing genetic diversity indices for each population, genetic differentiation among populations, model‐based Bayesian clustering or distance‐based clustering, and bottleneck tests. Results The level of genetic diversity in each of the populations on the Izu Islands was negatively correlated with geographical distance between each island and the mainland. The populations on the mainland and on the Izu Islands were genetically differentiated to a certain extent; however, the microsatellite analyses suggested that gene flow also occurred between the mainland and the islands, and among individual islands. These microsatellite analyses also suggested recent bottlenecks in several populations in both areas. Main conclusions The decrease in genetic diversity throughout the Izu Islands, which correlated with distance to the mainland, Honshu, may be the result of a repeated founder effect occurring at a series of inter‐island colonizations from north to south. The stepping stone‐like configuration of the islands may have played a role in the dispersal of the species. Geographical isolation by sea would effectively result in genetic differentiation of W. coraeensis between mainland Honshu and the Izu Islands, although some gene flow may still occur between Honshu and the northern Izu Islands. The differentiation process of the endemic plants on the Izu Islands is anagenetic but not completed, and the study of these plants will provide insightful knowledge concerning the evolution of insular endemics.

A rapid upward spawning rush is a nearly universal phenomenon among reef fishes that spawn pelagic eggs. Although spawning rushes have long been considered to have evolved as a defense against egg predators and/or attacks on the spawning fishes by piscivores, these hypotheses have never been tested in the field. We analysed piscivore attacks during three motor patterns associated with group spawning of the labrid fishThalassoma cupido at Miyake-jima, Izu Islands, Japan. Egg predation on group spawnings was also quantified. Of 206 piscivore attacks on spawning fishes by seven predator species, 17.1 (83.1%) occurred during 461 spawning rushes (1/2.7 spawning rushes). No attacks were successful during spawning rushes, and only four kills were made in 206 attacks summed from all three motor patterns associated with spawning, amounting to a piscivore success rate of only 1.9 %. In contrast, gametes from 90 of 213 spawnings (42.3 %) were consumed by nine species of planktivorous fishes. Spawning fish seemed not to recognize egg predators and made no attempt to avoid them, often spawning in the midst of waiting aggregations of damselfishes. Our data indicate that the rapidly of the spawning rush ofT. cupido serves as an excellent defense against piscivores, but is ineffective against egg predators. Evidence is presented from observations of seven other species suggesting that spawning ascents provide little protection against water column egg predators in predator-rich environments.

The scincid lizard Plestiodon latiscutatus is found in the Izu Islands and Izu Peninsula of central Japan, whereas P. japonicus, a close relative, is found over the entire main island group of Japan, except the Izu Peninsula. The precise area of occupancy of these species was surveyed around the Izu Peninsula. Species identification was made through comparison of mitochondrial DNA partial sequences of specimens from the Izu Peninsula with those from the other regions, since morphological differences between these species have not yet been characterized. This study determined that these species are deeply diverged from each other in mitochondrial DNA sequence, and that the ranges of these species overlap only in a narrow zone. The results imply that gene flow between these species, if any, is restricted to a low level, without physical barriers. The boundary between the geographic ranges of these species was established as occurring along the lower Fuji River, Mt. Fuji, and the Sakawa River. This region is concordant with that of the old sea that is assumed to have separated the Izu Peninsula from other parts of the Japanese main island group until the middle Pleistocene. This pattern suggests that P. latiscutatus and P. japonicus were differentiated allopatrically before the connection of land areas of the Izu Peninsula and Honshu, the main island of Japan, and come into secondary contact through this connection. Thus, the species boundary is likely to have been maintained in situ, without physical barriers, since the secondary contact in the middle Pleistocene.

Abstract Bagging experiments of Campanula punctata were carried out in natural populations on the six of the Izu Islands and mainland Honshu to investigate distribution of self-incompatibility. Additional observations on pollinators of Campanula supplementary to the previous study (Inoue and Amano, 1986) were made. Most of the plants on Honshu and Oshima Island showed self-incompatibility: while almost all plants in the Izu Islands except Oshima were self-compatible. Bumblebees did not exist in the Izu Islands except Oshima and the dominant pollinators of Campanula in these islands were halictid bees. These results support a hypothesis that a decrease in pollination efficiency in the absence of bumblebees results in the evolution of breeding systems in Campanula.

Five polymorphic microsatellite markers were developed in the Japanese conger eel (Conger myriaster) to understand the recruitment mechanisms and population structure of this species, the spawning sites and migration routes of which are unknown. Three of the loci were highly polymorphic and will serve as powerful tools for detailed population studies of the Japanese conger eel. One of the other two loci showed significant departure from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium and the other showed low allelic diversity.

Short-time tracking (one to eight days) of the Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica) using ultrasonic transmitter was performed in the tropical-subtropical area adjacent to the spawning area and temperate area off the Japanese Archipelago. Of 16 eels (11 wild and five farmed) used, 10 wild eels displayed clear diel vertical migration (DVM) from the beginning, while the other five farmed eels tracked for 19 to 66 hours did not. During daytime, a significantly positive correlation between migration depth and light intensity recorded on the vessel was observed in the 10 wild eels, indicating that the eels were sensitive to sunlight even at the middle to lower mesopelagic zone (500 to 800 m). During nighttime, the eel migration depth was observed to be associated with the phase, rising and setting of the moon, indicating that the eels were sensitive to moonlight at the upper mesopelagic zone (<300 m). Two of 10 wild eels were in the yellow stage but shared similar DVM with the silver stage eels. Swimbladders of three silver stage eels were punctured before releasing, but very little effect on DVM was observed. The eels very punctually initiated descent upon nautical dawn and ascent upon sunset, enabling us to determine local times for sunrise and sunset, and hence this behavior may be used for geolocating eels. In fact, estimated positions of eels based on the depth trajectory data were comparable or even better than those obtained by light-based archival tag in other fish species.

Impact of pollinator shift on differentiation of floral morphology has attracted the interest of naturalists for many years. A comparative investigation was conducted for determining the pollination characteristics, including pollinator assemblage, floral morphology, flowering phenology, and self‐compatibility, of two closely related Clerodendrum species—insular C. izuinsulare and widespread C. trichotomum. Japanese black swallowtail butterflies were the predominant flower visitors in mainland Japan, whereas diurnal hawk moths were predominantly found on the Izu Islands, a chain of oceanic islands located off the southeastern coast of the main Japanese island of Honshu in the west Pacific Ocean. The corolla tube of C. izuinsulare was longer than that of C. trichotomum, whereas the filaments and petals of C. izuinsulare were shorter than those of C. trichotomum. The flowering season of C. izuinsulare was later than that of C. trichotomum. The self‐compatibility of C. izuinsulare was higher than that of C. trichotomum. These differences might be associated with the low density of Japanese black swallowtail butterflies and dominance of diurnal hawk moths on the Izu Islands.

We studied the influence of temperature on the spawning performance of artificially matured Japanese eels, Anguilla japonica, in captivity. We used routine hormone injections to bring females and males to maturity in separate aquaria. We recorded the behavior of three pairs of such hormone-treated matured eels in an aquarium (2 replicates) at four temperatures: 14, 18, 22, and 27°C, respectively. They became active and frequently left the bottom swimming in the water column, and spawning events occurred. Females released eggs in the water column around the activity peaks. Males preceded females in reaching activity peaks (presumably the timing of sperm ejection and egg release), possibly resulting in the low fertilization we observed in this experiment. Males and females returned back to the aquarium bottoms and became quiet after spawning. On several occasions, male-female or female-female pairs were observed to ‘cruise together’ in the water column for several to tens of seconds prior to egg releasing, but no courtship behavior indicative of spawning such as pairing and chasing was observed in the eels in our study. Our results suggest that 18–22°C might be the thermal preference for spawning for Japanese eels, which approximates the temperature range of the 500 m deep water layer around the Mariana Islands seamount area, the presumed spawning site for the Japanese eel.

Aim We infer the biogeography and colonization history of a dispersal‐limited terrestrial vertebrate, the Japanese four‐lined ratsnake (Elaphe quadrivirgata), to reveal the number of times mainland populations have invaded the Izu Archipelago of Japan, the mainland sources of these colonists, and the time‐scale of colonization. We compare these results with those of past studies in an attempt to uncover general biogeographical patterns. Moreover, we briefly examine the significance of colonization history when evaluating the evolution of body size and melanism of the Izu Island E. quadrivirgata populations. Location The Izu Islands (Oshima, Toshima, Niijima, Shikine, Kozu, Tadanae and Mikura), a volcanic archipelago off the Pacific coast of central Japan. Methods We obtained DNA sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene (1117 base pairs) from 373 individual snakes sampled from seven of the Izu Islands and 25 mainland localities. We employed partitioned Bayesian phylogenetic analyses assuming a relaxed molecular clock to estimate phylogenetic relationships among extant haplotypes and to give an explicit temporal scale to the timing of clade divergence, colonization history and tempo of body‐size evolution. Moreover, we employed model‐based biogeographical analysis to calculate the minimum number of times E. quadrivirgata colonized the Izu Islands. Results We found evidence that three separate regions of the Izu Archipelago have been colonized independently from mainland ancestors within the past 0.58–0.20 Ma. The Izu Peninsula plus Oshima and Mikura were both colonized independently from lineages inhabiting eastern mainland Japan. The Toshima, Niijima, Shikine, Kozu and Tadanae populations all derive from a single colonization from western mainland Japan. Oshima has been subject to three or possibly four colonizations. Main conclusions These results support the hypothesis that the extreme body‐size disparity among island populations of this ratsnake evolved in situ. Moreover, the fact that the dwarf, melanistic population inhabiting Oshima descends from multiple mainland colonization events is evidence of an extremely strong natural selection pressure resulting in the rapid evolution of this unique morphology. These results contrast with theoretical predictions that natural selection pressures should play a decreased role on islands close to the mainland and/or subject to frequent or recent immigration.

We examined the gene sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome b (cyt b) in two Japanese wood mouse species, Apodemus speciosus (n = 89) and A. argenteus (n = 46), which are distributed on the four main islands of Japan (Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu) and on the small islands surrounding them. Apodemus speciosus, the larger of the two species, showed substantial genetic variation, with a maximum of 3% sequence divergence, and remarkable phylogenetic subdivision with two major clades. One clade represents haplotypes from a central region, including Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and their adjacent islands; the other clade includes haplotypes from Hokkaido and the peripheral islands, forming four subclades: a) Hokkaido, b) Sado Island, c) Satsunan Islands, and d) the Izu Islands. Sequence divergence among the four subclades was 1.0 to 1.5%, implying that A. speciosus colonized these geographic regions 0.2 to 0.3 million years ago, assuming a substitution rate of 2.4% per million years. The population on the Izu Islands has preserved haplotypes that are distinct from those in any other region, providing good evidence for the natural colonization of the volcanic islands of the Izu Islands. The cyt b sequence variation had no relation to the karyotypic dimorphism for the eastern (2n = 48) and western (2n = 46) geographic groups, between which a strict border exists at central Honshu. On the other hand, Apodemus argenteus, the smaller of the two species, showed a similar level of sequence divergence (maximum of 3%) but no substantial geographic differentiation: populations in Hokkaido, Sado, and Yakushima shared similar haplotypes with each of the central populations, suggesting that genetic exchanges occurred among the localities in the last 0.15 million years. The apparent genetic structure of the mitochondrial DNA found in the A. speciosus population might be caused solely by long-term existence in insular regions, presumably due to ecological superiority relative to A. argenteus.

Fishery sustainability and the extinction risk of the Japanese eel, Anguilla japonica, are of global concern. The landings of the Japanese eel in Japan comprise a large part of the landings in East Asia. This study provides a compiled dataset of the annual fisheries statistics of the Japanese eel in Japan for stock assessment. The Japanese government has been recording Japanese eel statistics annually since 1984 in five series of annual reports by conducting systematic questionnaire surveys of fisheries managers and associations; however, most of these data are stored in analog format. The key variables in the dataset include the harvest weight of eels, the harvest weight and number of seeds for aquaculture, the number of eels stocked, and the number of management entities engaged in the eel fishery. The levels of spatial aggregation of the variables include the site (river and lake), prefecture, inland and coastal waters, and total in Japan. We also incorporated location data (latitude and longitude) of the site and prefecture into the dataset. Eel harvest includes primarily yellow eels (late juvenile stage) and silver eels (mature stage). Seed harvest in inland waters includes glass eels (intermediate stage between leptocephalus and elver) and elvers (early juvenile stage). Seed harvest from coastal waters comprises glass eels. This dataset provides information to assess long-term trends in the Japanese eel population.

The ovarian mass and gonadosomatic index (IG) of bluefin tuna Thunnus thynnus , caught in the Strait of Gibraltar (Barbate) during migration to Mediterranean spawning grounds, were several times lower than those found in bluefin tuna from Mediterranean spawning grounds (Balearic Islands). Some of the bluefin tuna from Barbate (8.3%) were classified as immature (the most advanced oocytes present in the ovaries were early vitellogenic), and the majority (the remaining 91.6%) as non-spawning mature; the ovary contained late vitellogenic oocytes, but there was no sign of spawning activity. Stereological estimation indicated that the ovaries of spawning bluefin tuna from the Balearic Islands contained five-fold more highly yolked oocytes than bluefin tuna from Barbate. When breeding bluefin tuna cross the Strait of Gibraltar the gonad is at an incipient stage of maturation. The average batch fecundity estimated from stereological quantification of stage 4 (migratory-nucleus) oocytes in the specimens collected from Balearic was 92.8 oocytes g-1'of body mass, and the spawning frequency in this area was calculated to be 1.2 days. In specimens from Barbate a relative batch fecundity of 96.3 oocytes g -1 was estimated using stage 3 (late vitellogenic) oocyte counts.

Recent analyses of the tropical giant mottled eel Anguilla marmorata have suggested four to six populations within its Indo-Pacific distribution, including one represented by specimens from Guam, and that the population on Guam includes eels occurring in the eastern Caroline Islands based on morphological similarities. To test this hypothesis, sequences of the entire mitochondrial control region (mtCR) were obtained for 39 eels from Kosrae and Pohnpei, and compared to 267 previously sequenced haplotypes from across the Indo-Pacific Ocean. Results support recognition of two lineages distinctive for the eastern Caroline Islands and Guam, and the likelihood of an additional spawning area in the Indo-Pacific Ocean.
