The potato tuber moth (PTM) is an important pest of the potato plant and its tuber. With the expansion of its geographic range, the PTM could be potential threat to the tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.), a congeneric species of the potato. To assess that risk, we tested larval feeding and development of PTM on leaves of five cultivated tomato varieties namely Moneymaker, Campari, Ailsa Craig, LA3475, E6203 and one wild tomato variety S. pimpinellifolium. PTM larvae accepted all tested plant leaves and developed into adults. Larval development was fastest on the Ailsa Craig variety. Pupae developed fastest on the Moneymaker variety and slowest on LA3475. Host acceptance and survival were highest on Ailsa Craig and lowest on LA3475. The significantly highest male proportion occurred on LA3475 variety. The study showed that PTM could be a potential threat to tomato cultivation which is rapidly increasing in temperate regions owing to climate change.  相似文献

Potato tuber moth (PTM) is a primary pest of potato which had invaded into Korea in 1968 and its distribution was restricted in the southern part of the peninsula. Possibly due to the climate change, its distribution expanded toward the Northern part of South Korea including Gyounggi and Gangwon province where tomato production is high. Host expansion and damage potential of PTM was evaluated on tomato, a congeneric crop of potato. Three commercial varieties of tomato (Dafnis, Bangul and Jujube) and a potato (Superior-Sumi) were subjected to PTM larvae. The results showed that host suitability of tomato to PTM was lower than potato, but PTM could completely develop and reproduce on tomato leaves or fruits. Development time was varied relative to tomato varieties and plant age. PTM showed lower performance on the leaves and fruits of cherry type tomatoes. Higher survival was observed in the large sized fruit of tomato varieties. This study showed substantial evidence that the invaded PTM could damage the tomato cultivation.  相似文献

Accessions of wild Lycopersicon spp. and selected Fl hybrid tomato cultivars were compared for their resistance to three whitefly-transmissible geminiviruses: Indian tomato leaf curl virus (ITmLCV) and tomato yellow leaf curl viruses from Sardinia (TYLCV-Sar) and Senegal (TYLCV-Sen). The resistance of different plant lines was expressed in different ways but in most instances a given line reacted similarly to graft inoculation with the three viruses. L. pimpinellifolium LA1478 produced as much virus antigen, assessed by triple antibody sandwich-ELISA, as the susceptible cv. Moneymaker but developed only very mild symptoms and is therefore tolerant of infection. In L. hirsutum LA1777 and L. peruvianum CMV-INRA, very mild or no symptoms developed but antigen concentrations were substantially less than in Moneymaker. L. chilense LA1969 remained symptomless and its antigen concentration was < 1% of that in Moneymaker. Symptoms were mild or barely evident in the Fl hybrid cultivars. Cultivars Tyking and Fiona had antigen concentrations about 5–10% of those of Moneymaker, whereas TY20, Top 21 and Tyger had intermediate antigen concentrations. In a few instances, the extent to which virus accumulation was restricted depended on the challenge virus. Accumulation of TYLCV-Sen in TY20, Top 21 and Tyger was less affected than that of the other two viruses, and accumulation of TYLCV-Sar in accessions LA1777 and CMV-INRA was less affected than that of TYLCV-Sen or ITmLCV. Tissue-printing tests showed that ITmLCV and TYLCV-Sen antigens were confined to phloem tissue. In Tyking, the number of virus antigen-containing phloem traces and the antigen content of individual traces were less than in Moneymaker but the partitioning of antigen between internal and external phloem was unaffected.

The tomato leafminer, Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), is considered to be a major pest that damages tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L; Solanaceae) crops in South American, European, and Mediterranean countries. This insect species is polyphagous (i.e., feeds on many types of food); hence, it could also develop on other cultivated host plants, principally solanaceous plants, such as potato (S. tuberosum L.; Solanaceae) and eggplant (S. melongena L.; Solanaceae). Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that host plant choice by adult T. absoluta is influenced by plant volatile organic compounds and larval host plant experience. One tomato cultivar (cv.) ‘Moneymaker’ and three potato cv. ‘Charlotte’ ‘Bintje,’ and ‘Nicola’ were tested. Using a flying tunnel, we observed that females reared on tomato preferred flying toward tomato and, to a lesser extent, potato cv. ‘Charlotte.’ These preferences might be explained by the high release of terpenes by these two plants. When conducting oviposition choice assays, we found no preference between tomato and potato in the number of eggs laid by females that had been previously reared on either host plant. This study indicates that the host finding behavior of T. absoluta is mediated by solanaceous volatiles, while oviposition behavior appears to depend on additional stimuli. These results provide baseline information for use in the development of new control strategies against T. absoluta using semiochemicals and plant breeding.  相似文献

Comparative analysis of the genome sequences of Solanum lycopersicum variety Heinz 1706 and S. pimpinellifolium accession LA 1589 using MUGSY software identified 145 695 insertion–deletion (InDel) polymorphisms. A selected set of 3029 candidate InDels (≥2 bp) across the entire tomato genome were subjected to PCR validation, and 82.4% could be verified. Of 2272 polymorphic InDels between LA 1589 and Heinz 1706, 61.6, 45.2, and 31.6% were polymorphic in 8 accessions of S. pimpinellifolium, 4 accessions of S. lycopersicum var. cerasiforme, and 10 varieties of S. lycopersicum, respectively. Genetic distance was 0.216 in S. pimpinellifolium, 0.202 in S. lycopersicum var. cerasiforme, and 0.108 in S. lycopersicum. The data suggested a reduction of genetic variation from S. pimpinellifolium to S. lycopersicum var. cerasiforme and S. lycopersicum. Cluster analysis showed that the 8 accessions of S. pimpinellifolium were in one group, whereas 4 accessions of S. lycopersicum var. cerasiforme and 10 varieties of S. lycopersicum were in the same group.  相似文献

Late blight, caused by the oomycete pathogen Phytophthora infestans (Mont.) de Bary, is a devastating disease for tomato and potato crops. In the past decades, many late blight resistance (R) genes have been characterized in potato. In contrast, less work has been conducted on tomato. The Ph-3 gene from Solanum pimpinellifolium was introgressed into cultivated tomatoes and conferred broad-spectrum resistance to P. infestans. It was previously assigned to the long arm of chromosome 9. In this study, a high-resolution genetic map covering the Ph-3 locus was constructed using an F2 population of a cross between Solanum lycopersicum CLN2037B (containing Ph-3) and S. lycopersicum LA4084. Ph-3 was mapped in a 0.5 cM interval between two markers, Indel_3 and P55. Eight putative genes were found in the corresponding 74 kb region of the tomato Heinz1706 reference genome. Four of these genes are resistance gene analogs (RGAs) with a typical nucleotide-binding adaptor shared by APAF-1, R proteins, and CED-4 domain. Each RGA showed high homology to the late blight R gene Rpi-vnt1.1 from Solanum venturii. Transient gene silencing indicated that a member of this RGA family is required for Ph-3-mediated resistance to late blight in tomato. Furthermore, this RGA family was also found in the potato genome, but the number of the RGAs was higher than in tomato.  相似文献

Ph-3 is the first cloned tomato gene for resistance to late blight and encodes a CC-NBS-LRR protein.

Abstract

Late blight, caused by Phytophthora infestans, is one of the most destructive diseases in tomato. The resistance (R) gene Ph-3, derived from Solanum pimpinellifolium L3708, provides resistance to multiple P. infestans isolates and has been widely used in tomato breeding programmes. In our previous study, Ph-3 was mapped into a region harbouring R gene analogues (RGA) at the distal part of long arm of chromosome 9. To further narrow down the Ph-3 interval, more recombinants were identified using the flanking markers G2-4 and M8-2, which defined the Ph-3 gene to a 26 kb region according to the Heinz1706 reference genome. To clone the Ph-3 gene, a bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) library was constructed using L3708 and one BAC clone B25E21 containing the Ph-3 region was identified. The sequence of the BAC clone B25E21 showed that only one RGA was present in the target region. A subsequent complementation analysis demonstrated that this RGA, encoding a CC-NBS-LRR protein, was able to complement the susceptible phenotype in cultivar Moneymaker. Thus this RGA was considered the Ph-3 gene. The predicted Ph-3 protein shares high amino acid identity with the chromosome-9-derived potato resistance proteins against P. infestans (Rpi proteins).  相似文献

The potato tuber moth (PTM),Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), is a major pest of processing tomatoes,Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. (Solanaceae), in Israel. The larvae penetrate the tomato fruit through the stem end and present a serious threat to crop quality. Foliage and fruit samples were taken in nine commercial tomato fields located in Israel's three main tomato growing areas, two of which are potato growing areas as well. PTM was not found where potatoes were absent. Potato harvest in nearby fields was found to be the most significant factor affecting seasonal trends in PTM population density in tomatoes. All four larval instars were found in foliage on all sampling dates. Significantly higher proportions of first instars were found during the population density increase which followed potato harvest. Damaged fruits did not contain first instar larvae, indicating that PTM never undergoes complete development within tomato fruit. Fruit damage levels at harvest were positively correlated to the peak mean population densities on foliage and the date they were observed. In tomato fields not adjacent to potatoes, infestation was first observed at the edge of the field. Both before and after the potato harvest in nearby fields, population density at the edge of the field was significantly higher than at the center. In tomato fields adjacent to potatoes, no significant differences were found between population densities at the edge and center before the potatoes were harvested. After the potato harvest, population density at the center of tomato fields was higher than at the edge. Deceased, October 1988  相似文献

Components of tomato taste can be modeled from a set of instrumentally measured parameters. The inheritance was studied of two texture parameters with an effect of mealiness and pleasantness of taste: BFp and EBp. A recombinant inbred line population (F6) of the cross tomato cv Moneymaker x L. pimpinellifolium was analyzed for these parameters, and a molecular linkage map was developed for this population. A single QTL region on chromosome 9 was found with an effect on both BFp and EBp. The QTL explained 18.2 and 18.8% of the population variances, and 19.5 and 39.0% of the parental differences respectively for BFp and EBp.  相似文献

Identification of plant chemicals attracting and repelling whiteflies   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The harmful side effects of chemical pest control have focused increasing attention on the potential for environmentally friendly, sustainable and efficient methods to control the sweet potato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius). One control method employs a volatile repellent (push), and an alluring volatile trap (pull) to manipulate the distribution and control the whitefly. Here, a Y-tube olfactometer was used to investigate the orientation responses of the whitefly toward the volatile components of six plants: tomato, tobacco, cabbage, cotton, cucumber and celery. Gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry was used to identify and quantify extracts from the six plants. Six treatments were conducted to demonstrate the “push–pull” method’s effects on the host selection behaviors of B. tabaci in a greenhouse. Four of the plant extracts tested had exceedingly attractive effects on the adult insects, but not those from celery. B. tabaci exhibited a prominent attraction response to (E)-2-hexenal, 3-hexen-1-ol and mixtures of these compounds, with the response rates exceeding 80 % for all tested proportions. Limonene diluted 500 times had a 62 % greater deterrent effect on adults than was observed in its absence, and it repelled egg-laying by more than 80 % in the greenhouse experiment. These data show that (E)-2-hexenal, 3-hexen-1-ol and limonene can be expected to be used for the “push–pull” method to control B. tabaci.  相似文献

Tomato gray mold (Botrytis cinerea Pers.) is a common disease worldwide, and often causes serious production loss by infecting leaves, stems, flowers and fruits. Presently, no resistant cultivars are available. To find new breeding materials for gray mold resistance, assessment for resistance of the leaflet and stem in six tomato cultivars, 44 wild tomato accessions and a Solanum lycopersicoides accession was performed. Although no correlation was observed (r=−0.127ns) between resistance of the leaflet and the stem, L. peruvianum LA2745, L. hirsutum LA2314 and L. pimpinellifolium LA1246 showed high resistance both in the leaflet and in the stem. Particularly, in the leaves of LA2745, no lesions were observed even more than two weeks after the inoculation with conidia, and F1s between a cultivated tomato and LA2745 also showed high resistance as observed in LA2745. From these results, LA2745 is thought to be a promising material for breeding gray-mold resistant cultivars.  相似文献

Brazil is one of the world's largest tomato producer, but considerable part of the production is lost due to the attack of Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) B biotype. Resistant germoplasm plants can be an important method for B. tabaci control in integrated pest management approaches. The attractiveness and ovipositional preference of B. tabaci for 17 tomato genotypes were evaluated in a free-choice test. Trials were set up in a randomized block design with ten replicates. Each replicate (one tomato plant per pot) was placed in a cage (80 x 50 x 50 cm) and infested with 1,000 adults during four days. Linear correlation tests were applied between the number of insects and eggs and number of trichomes in each tomato genotype. LA716, LA444-1 and PI134418 genotypes were the least attractive, while the 'Santa Clara' was the most attractive; PI134417 trapped the largest number of adults. LA716 genotype (4.1 eggs/leaflet and 2.1 cm2/eggs per leaflet) was the least preferred for whitefly oviposition; NAV1062, 'Fanny', LA1335, 'Santa Clara' and IAC294 were the most preferred genotypes. The glandular trichomes density was negatively correlated with whitefly's attractiveness and oviposition per leaflet and per leaf, and positively with the number of trapped insects. The non-glandular trichomes density was negatively correlated with the number of trapped insects and positively with whitefly's oviposition per cm2/leaflet andper cm2/leaf. LA716 had high antixenosis level (ovipositional nonpreference) toward B. tabaci B biotype related with type IV glandular trichome.  相似文献

In Japan, although greenhouse whitefly, Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood), and sweet potato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius), co-occur on tomato plants under greenhouse conditions, the two whiteflies are distributed differently with regard to leaf position. To elucidate the factors that determine the leaf position of these whiteflies, we investigated traits for leaflets collected from three positions on tomato plants. Furthermore, we examined leaflet selection by and fertility of the two whiteflies under choice and non-choice conditions. In addition, the effect on whitefly behavior of volatile compounds released from leaflets was evaluated by use of a Y-tube olfactometer test. Nitrogen and carbon content were highest for upper leaflets. In choice tests, more T. vaporariorum and B. tabaci adults selected upper and middle leaflets, respectively. Similarly, they oviposited more eggs on upper and middle leaflets. In non-choice tests, T. vaporariorum oviposited more eggs on upper leaflets, but B. tabaci oviposited equally on each leaflet. In Y-tube olfactometer tests, more T. vaporariorum adults moved to upper leaflets whereas more B. tabaci adults moved to middle leaflets. These results suggest that different leaflet selection by adults of these two whiteflies is likely to be associated with the different volatile compounds emitted by tomato leaflets at each position.  相似文献

A cDNA clone (TAB7) encoding a putative woundinduced (Win) proteinhas been isolated from a tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.cv. Ailsa Craig) leaf abscission zone cDNA library using a differentialscreening strategy. The clone has a high degree of homologyat the amino acid level to both the potato win1 and 2 genes,Hevea brasiliensis hevein and Nicotiana tabacum PR-4a and PR-4bproteins. The mRNA encoded by TAB7 is up-regulated within 12h of exposure to ethylene (10µl l–1) and its expressionincreases steadily within the cells comprising the leaf abscissionzone and to a lesser extent in the adjacent non-zone tissue. This rise precedes the onset of cell separation. Southern analysisindicates that the mRNA is encoded by either a single gene ora small gene family. The role of the protein during abscissionis discussed. Approximately 170 BC2 plants from a cross between an elite processing inbred (recurrent parent) and the wild species Lycopersicon pimpinellifolium LA1589 (donor parent) were analyzed with segregating molecular markers covering the entire tomato genome. Marker data were used to identify QTLs controlling a battery of horticultural traits measured on BC2F1 and BC3 families derived from the BC2 individuals. Despite its overall inferior appearance, L. pimpinellifolium was shown to possess QTL alleles capable of enhancing most traits important in processing tomato production. QTL-NIL lines, containing specific QTLs modifying fruit size and shape, were subsequently constructed and shown to display the transgressive phenotypes predicted from the original BC2 QTL analysis. The potential of exploiting unadapted and wild germplasm via advanced backcross QTL analysis for the enhancement of elite crop varieties is discussed.  相似文献
