Understanding the interfacial electronic structures of heterojunctions, a challenging undertaking, is extremely important to the design of photoelectrodes for efficient water splitting. The heterostructured interfaces in terms of crystal defects at the atomic‐level exemplified by TiO2/BiVO4 are studied. Results from both experimental observations and theoretical calculations clearly confirm the spontaneous formation of defective interfaces in the heterostructures. TiO2/BiVO4 junction with engineered interfacial defects can efficiently increase the carrier density and extend the lifetime of electrons. The inherent phenomenon of defective electronic structures in different heterostructures creates a significant impact on their photoelectrochemical performance. The synergetic effect between defect‐mediated mechanism and organic quantum dots sensitization yields significantly increased photoconversion efficiency, which is even superior to that of common metal sulfide sensitized ones. This result demonstrates an approach worthy for the design and fabrication of defect‐mediated heterostructures for water splitting, without utilizing harmful metal sulfides. Moreover, new insights into the influence of intrinsic defects on the interfacial charge transfer process between two different semiconductors for energy‐related applications have also been provided. 相似文献

One promising approach to hydrogen energy utilization from full water splitting relies on the successful development of earth‐abundant, efficient, and stable electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here, homologous Co–Ni‐based nanotube/nanosheet structures with tunable Co/Ni ratios, including hydroxides and nitrides, are grown on conductive substrates by a cation‐exchanging method to grow hydroxides, followed by anion exchanging to obtain corresponding nitrides. These hydroxide OER catalysts and nitride HER catalysts exhibit low overpotentials, small Tafel slopes, and high current densities, which are attributed to their large electrochemically reactive surface, 1D morphologies for charge conduction, and octahedral coordination states of metal ions for efficient catalytic activities. The homologous Co–Ni‐based nanotube hydroxides and nitrides suggest promising electrocatalysts for full water splitting with high efficiency, good stability, convenient fabrication, and low cost. 相似文献

Rational design and construction of bifunctional electrocatalysts with excellent activity and durability is imperative for water splitting. Herein, a novel top‐down strategy to realize a hierarchical branched Mo‐doped sulfide/phosphide heterostructure (Mo‐Ni3S2/NixPy hollow nanorods), by partially phosphating Mo‐Ni3S2/NF flower clusters, is proposed. Benefitting from the optimized electronic structure configuration, hierarchical branched hollow nanorod structure, and abundant heterogeneous interfaces, the as‐obtained multisite Mo‐Ni3S2/NixPy/NF electrode has remarkable stability and bifunctional electrocatalytic activity in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER)/oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 1 m KOH solutions. It possesses an extremely low overpotential of 238 mV at the current density of 50 mA cm?2 for OER. Importantly, when assembled as anode and cathode simultaneously, it merely requires an ultralow cell voltage of 1.46 V to achieve the current density of 10 mA cm?2, with excellent durability for over 72 h, outperforming most of the reported Ni‐based bifunctional materials. Density functional theory results further confirm that the doped heterostructure can synergistically optimize Gibbs free energies of H and O‐containing intermediates (OH*, O*, and OOH*) during HER and OER processes, thus accelerating the catalytic kinetics of electrochemical water splitting. This work demonstrates the importance of the rational combination of metal doping and interface engineering for advanced catalytic materials. 相似文献

In Situ Grown Bimetallic MOF‐Based Composite as Highly Efficient Bifunctional Electrocatalyst for Overall Water Splitting with Ultrastability at High Current Densities 下载免费PDF全文
A newly designed water‐stable NH2‐MIL‐88B(Fe2Ni)‐metal–organic framework (MOF), in situ grown on the surface of a highly conducting 3D macroporous nickel foam (NF), termed NFN‐MOF/NF, is demonstrated to be a highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst for overall water splitting with ultrastability at high current densities. The NFN‐MOF/NF achieves ultralow overpotentials of 240 and 87 mV at current density of 10 mA cm?2 for the oxygen evolution reaction and hydrogen evolution reaction, respectively, in 1 m KOH. For the overall water splitting, it requires only an ultralow cell voltage of 1.56 V to reach the current density of 10 mA cm?2, outperforming the pairing of Pt/C on NF as the cathode and IrO2 on NF as the anode at the same catalyst loading. The stability of the NFN‐MOF/NF catalyst is also outstanding, exhibiting only a minor chronopotentiometric decay of 7.8% at 500 mA cm?2 after 30 h. The success of the present NFN‐MOF/NF catalyst is attributed to the abundant active centers, the bimetallic clusters {Fe2Ni(µ3‐O)(COO)6(H2O)3}, in the MOF, the positive coupling effect between Ni and Fe metal ions in the MOF, and synergistic effect between the MOF and NF. 相似文献

Polydopamine‐Inspired,Dual Heteroatom‐Doped Carbon Nanotubes for Highly Efficient Overall Water Splitting 下载免费PDF全文
Konggang Qu Yao Zheng Yan Jiao Xianxi Zhang Sheng Dai Shi‐Zhang Qiao 《Liver Transplantation》2017,7(9)
Overall water splitting involved hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are critical for renewable energy conversion and storage. Heteroatom‐doped carbon materials have been extensively employed as efficient electrocatalysts for independent HER or OER processes, while those as the bifunctional catalysts for simultaneously generating H2 and O2 by splitting water have been seldom reported. Inspired by the unparalleled virtues of polydopamine, the authors devise the facile synthesis of nitrogen and sulfur dual‐doped carbon nanotubes with in situ, homogenous and high concentration sulfur doping. The newly developed dual‐doped electrocatalysts display superb bifunctional catalytic activities for both HER and OER in alkaline solutions, outperforming all other reported carbon counterparts. Experimental characterizations confirm that the excellent performance is attributed to the multiple doping together with efficient mass and charge transfer, while theoretical computations reveal the promotion effect of secondary sulfur dopant to enhance the spin density of dual‐doped samples and consequently to form highly electroactive sites for both HER and OER. 相似文献

Currently, it is still a significant challenge to simultaneously boost various reactions by one electrocatalyst with high activity, excellent durability, as well as low cost. Herein, hybrid trifunctional electrocatalysts are explored via a facile one‐pot strategy toward an efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The catalysts are rationally designed to be composed by FeCo nanoparticles encapsuled in graphitic carbon films, Co2P nanoparticles, and N,P‐codoped carbon nanofiber networks. The FeCo nanoparticles and the synergistic effect from Co2P and FeCo nanoparticles make the dominant contributions to the ORR, OER, and HER activities, respectively. Their bifunctional activity parameter (?E) for ORR and OER is low to 0.77 V, which is much smaller than those of most nonprecious metal catalysts ever reported, and comparable with state‐of‐the‐art Pt/C and RuO2 (0.78 V). Accordingly, the as‐assembled Zn–air battery exhibits a high power density of 154 mW cm?2 with a low charge–discharge voltage gap of 0.83 V (at 10 mA cm?2) and excellent stability. The as‐constructed overall water‐splitting cell achieves a current density of 10 mA cm?2 (at 1.68 V), which is comparable to the best reported trifunctional catalysts. 相似文献

Tailoring active sites in earth‐abundant non‐noble metal electrocatalysts are required toward widespread applications in sustainable energy fields. Herein, an integrated mesoporous heterostructure array is reported by a hydrogenation/nitridation‐induced in situ growth strategy. Highly conductive oxygen‐vacancies‐rich tungsten oxynitride (Vo‐WON) nanorod array acts as the backbone encapsulated by ultrathin nitrogen‐doped carbon (NC) nanolayers, forming high‐quality shell/core NC/Vo‐WON heterostructures. Density functional theory calculations reveal that defect‐rich heterostructure arrays not only enhance the conductivity and modulate electronic structure but also promote the adsorption and dissociation of reactants and offer substantial potential sites. As expected, porous NC/Vo‐WON array exhibits a small overpotential of 16 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm?2 and a low Tafel slope of 33 mV per decade in alkaline media, accompanied by negligible loss upon a large current density over 100 h. Benefiting from outstanding electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction performance and stability, this defective heterostructure could serve as a prominent alternative electrocatalyst for renewable energy applications. 相似文献

The development of highly efficient and durable electrocatalysts is crucial for overall water splitting. Herein, the in situ scaffolding formation of 3D Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) on a variety of 2D or 1D metal hydroxides/oxides to fabricate hierarchical nanostructures is first demonstrated. Typically, cobalt hydroxide or oxide nanoarrays are used as the precursor and structural oriented template for the subsequent growth of 3D PBA nanocubes. The mechanism study reveals that the interfacial scaffolding process can be reversibly controlled via the in situ ion exchange process with adjusting coordination ions. Thus, the facile, versatile strategy can extend to successfully fabricate a variety of hierarchical PBA‐based nanostructures including on cobalt fluoride hydroxide, copper hydroxide, monometal or bimetal nickel–cobalt hydroxides, cobalt oxide, and manganese oxide nanosheets with structural tailor‐ability and chemical diversity. More interestingly, the metal nitride derivatives obtained via controlled calcination process exhibit good electrocatalytic activity for water splitting with low overpotentials, and remarkable durability for 1200 h, thanks to the superior intrinsic activity of bimetal nature and the scrupulous hierarchical structure. This versatile strategy provides a paradigm for rational design of PBA‐based functional nanomaterials, which is highly promising in energy conversion, storage, and electrocatalytic fields. 相似文献

Construction of well‐defined metal–organic framework precursor is vital to derive highly efficient transition metal–carbon‐based electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in water splitting. Herein, a novel strategy involving an in situ transformation of ultrathin cobalt layered double hydroxide into 2D cobalt zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF‐67) nanosheets grafted with 3D ZIF‐67 polyhedra supported on the surface of carbon cloth (2D/3D ZIF‐67@CC) precursor is proposed. After a low‐temperature pyrolysis, this precursor can be further converted into hybrid composites composed of ultrafine cobalt nanoparticles embedded within 2D N‐doped carbon nanosheets and 3D N‐doped hollow carbon polyhedra (Co@N‐CS/N‐HCP@CC). Experimental and density functional theory calculations results indicate that such composites have the advantages of a large number of accessible active sites, accelerated charge/mass transfer ability, the synergistic effect of components as well as an optimal water adsorption energy change. As a result, the obtained Co@N‐CS/N‐HCP@CC catalyst requires overpotentials of only 66 and 248 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm?2 for HER and OER in 1.0 m KOH, respectively. Remarkably, it enables an alkali‐electrolyzer with a current density of 10 mA cm?2 at a low cell voltage of 1.545 V, superior to that of the IrO2@CC||Pt/C@CC couple (1.592 V). 相似文献

Alongside rare‐earth metals, Ni, Fe, Co, Cu are some of the critical materials that will be in huge demand thanks to growth in clean‐energy sector. Herein scrap stainless steel wires (SSW) from worn‐out tires are employed as a support material for catalyst integration in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In addition, SSW by corrosion engineering is exercised as an in situ formed freestanding robust electrode for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). By superficial corrosion of SSW, inherent active species are unmasked in the form of Ni/FeOOH nanocrystallites displaying efficient water oxidation by reaching 500 mA cm?2 at low overpotential (η500) of 287 mV in 1 m KOH. Similarly, cathode scrap SSW with active (alloy) coatings of MoNi4 catalyzes the HER at η‐200 = 77 mV, with a low activation energy (Ea = 16.338 kJ mol?1) and high durability of 150 h. Promisingly, when used in industrial conditions, 5 m KOH, 343 K, these electrodes demonstrate abnormal activity by yielding high anodic and cathodic current density of 1000 mA cm?2 at η = 233 mV and η = 161 mV, respectively. This work may inspire researchers to explore and reutilize high‐demand metals from scrap for addressing critical material shortfalls in clean‐energy technologies. 相似文献

A Monodisperse Rh2P‐Based Electrocatalyst for Highly Efficient and pH‐Universal Hydrogen Evolution Reaction 下载免费PDF全文
Fulin Yang Yuanmeng Zhao Yeshuang Du Yongting Chen Gongzhen Cheng Shengli Chen Wei Luo 《Liver Transplantation》2018,8(18)
The search for Pt‐free electrocatalysts exceeding pH‐universal hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activities when compared to the state‐of‐the‐art commercial Pt/C is highly desirable for the development of renewable energy conversion systems but still remains a huge challenge. Here a colloidal synthesis of monodisperse Rh2P nanoparticles with an average size of 2.8 nm and their superior catalytic activities for pH‐universal HER are reported. Significantly, the Rh2P catalyst displays remarkable HER performance with overpotentials of 14, 30, and 38 mV to achieve 10 mA cm?2 in 0.5 m H2SO4, 1.0 m KOH, and 1.0 m phosphate‐buffered saline, respectively, exceeding almost all the documented electrocatalysts, including the commercial 20 wt% Pt/C. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the introduction of P into Rh can weaken the H adsorption strength of Rh2P to nearly zero, beneficial for boosting HER performance. 相似文献

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are crystalline organic polymers with tunable structures. Here, a COF is prepared using building units with highly flexible tetrahedral sp3 nitrogens. This flexibility gives rise to structural changes which generate mesopores capable of confining very small (<2 nm sized) non‐noble‐metal‐based nanoparticles (NPs). This nanocomposite shows exceptional activity toward the oxygen‐evolution reaction from alkaline water with an overpotential of 258 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm?2. The overpotential observed in the COF‐nanoparticle system is the best in class, and is close to the current record of ≈200 mV for any noble‐metal‐free electrocatalytic water splitting system—the Fe–Co–Ni metal‐oxide‐film system. Also, it possesses outstanding kinetics (Tafel slope of 38.9 mV dec?1) for the reaction. The COF is able to stabilize such small‐sized NP in the absence of any capping agent because of the COF–Ni(OH)2 interactions arising from the N‐rich backbone of the COF. Density‐functional‐theory modeling of the interaction between the hexagonal Ni(OH)2 nanosheets and the COF shows that in the most favorable configuration the Ni(OH)2 nanosheets are sandwiched between the sp3 nitrogens of the adjacent COF layers and this can be crucial to maximizing their synergistic interactions. 相似文献

Multifunctional Single‐Crystallized Carbonate Hydroxides as Highly Efficient Electrocatalyst for Full Water splitting 下载免费PDF全文
The controllable synthesis of single‐crystallized iron‐cobalt carbonate hydroxide nanosheets array on 3D conductive Ni foam (FCCH/NF) as a monolithic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) bifunctional electrocatalyst for full water splitting is described. The results demonstrate that the incorporation of Fe can effectively tune the morphology, composition, electronic structure, and electrochemical active surface area of the electrocatalysts, thus greatly enhancing the intrinsic electrocatalytic activity. The optimal electrocatalyst (F0.25C1CH/NF) can deliver 10 and 1000 mA cm?2 at very small overpotentials of 77 and 256 mV for HER and 228 and 308 mV for OER in 1.0 m KOH without significant interference from gas evolution. The F0.25C1CH‐based two‐electrode alkaline water electrolyzer only requires cell voltages of 1.45 and 1.52 V to achieve current densities of 10 and 500 mA cm?2. The results demonstrate that such fascinating electrocatalytic activity can be ascribed to the increase in the catalytic active surface area, facilitated electron and mass transport properties, and the synergistic interactions because of the incorporation of Fe. 相似文献

Recently, defect engineering has been used to intruduce half‐metallicity into selected semiconductors, thereby significantly enhancing their electrical conductivity and catalytic/electrocatalytic performance. Taking inspiration from this, we developed a novel bifunctional electrode consisting of two monolayer thick manganese dioxide (δ‐MnO2) nanosheet arrays on a nickel foam, using a novel in‐situ method. The bifunctional electrode exposes numerous active sites for electrocatalytic rections and displays excellent electrical conductivity, resulting in strong performance for both HER and OER. Based on detailed structure analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the remarkably OER and HER activity of the bifunctional electrode can be attributed to the ultrathin δ‐MnO2 nanosheets containing abundant oxygen vacancies lead to the formation od Mn3+ active sites, which give rise to half‐metallicity properties and strong H2O adsorption. This synthetic strategy introduced here represents a new method for the development of non‐precious metal Mn‐based electrocatalysts for eddicient energy conversion. 相似文献

Solar‐assisted photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting to produce hydrogen energy is considered the most promising solution for clean, green, and renewable sources of energy. For scaled production of hydrogen and oxygen, highly active, robust, and cost‐effective PEC electrodes are required. However, most of the available semiconductors as a PEC electrodes have poor light absorption, material degradation, charge separation, and transportability, which result in very low efficiency for photo‐water splitting. Generally, a promising photoelectrode is obtained when the surface of the semiconductor is modified/decorated with a suitable co‐catalyst because it increases the light absorbance spectrum and prevents electron–hole recombination during photoelectrode reactions. In this regard, numerous p‐ and d‐block elements, single atoms, and graphene‐based PEC electrodes have been widely used as semiconductor/co‐catalyst junctions to boost the performances of PEC overall water splitting. This review enumerates the recent progress and applications of p‐ and d‐block elements, single atoms, and graphene‐based PEC electrodes for water splitting. The focus is placed on fundamental mechanism, efficiency, cells design, and various aspects that contribute to the large‐scale prototype device. Finally, future perspectives, summary, challenges, and outlook for improving the activity of PEC photoelectrodes toward whole‐cell water splitting are addressed. 相似文献
