Gas exchange, water-use efficiency (WUE), carbon isotope composition ( Δ 13C) and growth traits were compared among 5 populations of Eucalyptus microtheca F. Muell. Seedlings grown from seed collected across the natural distribution of the species were maintained under water-stressed and well-watered conditions. Gas exchange was measured in terms of net photosynthesis (A) and transpiration (E); WUE was measured in terms of instantaneous water-use efficiency (WUEi) and transpiration efficiency (WUET); growth traits were measured in terms of total biomass (TB), root/shoot ratio (RS), and specific leaf area density (DEN). Significant differences in all traits were detected among the populations. Overall population variation was 1.68–2.50 and 1.48–2.26 μmol CO2 uptake per mmol H2O transpired (WUEi), 1.97–3.04 and 1.64–2.36 g dry matter accumulation per kg water transpired (WUET), and Δ 13C was −28.81 to −26.75‰ and −30.56 to −30.04‰ under the water-stressed and well-watered conditions, respectively. In addition, WUEi, WUET and Δ 13C were significantly correlated with A, E, RS, DEN and TB. The study indicated that measurement of WUE may be a useful trait for selecting genotypes with improved drought adaptation and biomass productivity under different environmental conditions.  相似文献

Abstract: Diurnal courses of gas exchange were measured throughout one year in fully expanded current-year leaves in the uppermost canopy (sun leaves, 18 m above ground) and in the lower canopy (shade leaves, 12 m above ground) of Myrica faya Ait., a dominant component of the Canarian laurel forest in Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain.
M. faya showed large differences between sun and shade leaves in gas exchange characteristics (about 50 % of maximum carbon assimilation rate (Amax) reduction in shade leaves, but this reduction can be higher on specific days) that were modulated by strong light attenuation and high leaf area index (LAI) of the stand. This species presented low Amax, about 10 μmol m-2 s-1, high maximum transpiration (E, 8 mmol m-2 s-1) and stomatal conductance (gs, 750 mmol m-2 s-1) and very low instantaneous water use efficiency (WUE, mean maximum 1.1 mmol mol-1) and A/gs (mean maximum 23.5 μmol mol-1). M. faya responded to high air vapour pressure deficit (VPD), decreasing its gs but maintaining relatively high values of A and E during the studied period. Stomatal response to VPD showed a higher sensitivity than its congeners, M. cerifera, and Laurus azorica, tree species co-occurring in the Canarian laurel forest. In general, all these gas exchange characteristics lead us to consider this species more similar to subtropical plants of humid regions than to species of the Mediterranean region.  相似文献

Ananas comosus L. (Merr.) (pineapple) was grown at three day/night temperatures and 350 (ambient) and 700 (elevated) μ mol mol–1 CO2 to examine the interactive effects of these factors on leaf gas exchange and stable carbon isotope discrimination ( Δ ,‰). All data were collected on the youngest mature leaf for 24 h every 6 weeks. CO2 uptake (mmol m–2 d–1) at ambient and elevated CO2, respectively, were 306 and 352 at 30/20 °C, 175 and 346 at 30/25 °C and 187 and 343 at 35/25 °C. CO2 enrichment enhanced CO2 uptake substantially in the day in all environments. Uptake at night at elevated CO2, relative to that at ambient CO2, was unchanged at 30/20 °C, but was 80% higher at 30/25 °C and 44% higher at 35/25 °C suggesting that phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase was not CO2-saturated at ambient CO2 levels and a 25 °C night temperature. Photosynthetic water use efficiency (WUE) was higher at elevated than at ambient CO2. Leaf Δ -values were higher at elevated than at ambient CO2 due to relatively higher assimilation in the light. Leaf Δ was significantly and linearly related to the fraction of total CO2 assimilated at night. The data suggest that a simultaneous increase in CO2 level and temperature associated with global warming would enhance carbon assimilation, increase WUE, and reduce the temperature dependence of CO2 uptake by A. comosus .  相似文献

Abstract. Kosteletzkya virginica (L.) Presl., a dicotyledonous halophyte native to brackish tidal marshes, was grown on nutrient solution containing 0. 85, 170 or 255 mol m-3 NaCl, and the effects of external salinity on shoot growth and ion content of individual leaves were studied in successive harvests. Growth was stimulated by 85 mol m-3 NaCl and was progressively reduced at the two higher salinities. Growth suppression at high salinity resulted principally from decreased leaf production and area, not from accelerated leaf death. As is characteristic of halophytic dicots. K. virginica accumulated inorganic ions in its leaves, particularly Na+ and K+. However, the Na+ concentration of individual leaves did not increase with time, but remained constant or even declined, seeming to be well-coordinated with changes in water content. A striking feature of the ion composition of salinized plants was the development of a dramatic gradient in sodium content, with Na+ partitioned away from the most actively growing leaves. Salt-treated plants exhibited a strong potassium affinity, with foliar K+ levels higher in salinized plants than unsalinized plants after an initial decrease. These results suggest that selective uptake and transport, foliar compartmentation of Na+ and K+ in opposite directions along the shoot axis, and the regulation of leaf salt loads over time to prevent build-up of toxic concentrations are whole-plant features which enable K. virginica to establish favourable K+-Na+ relations under saline conditions.  相似文献

The effects of light and temperature on cell size and cellular composition (chlorophyll, protein, carbohydrate) of two freshwater cryptophytes were studied with batch cultures. Neither of the species had a constant cell size but the size varied with growth conditions. At each temperature the smallest cells were recorded at the lowest experimental photon flux density. The smallest cells of Cryptomonas 979/67 had an average volume of 232 μm3 and the largest ones 1 020 μm3. In Cryptomonas 979/62 the smallest and largest cells measured 4 306 μm3 and 12 450 μm3. Both species increased their cellular chlorophyll content when PFB dropped below 110–120 μmol m-2 s-1. The highest and lowest chlorophyll contents of 979/67 were 7.45 fg μm-3 and 0.55 fg μm-2 respectively. For 979/62 the corresponding values were 10.23 fg μm-3 and 0.93 fg μm-3. In both species the protein content remained stable at PFDs higher than 110–120 μmol m-2 S-1. The highest content of protein measured in 979/67 was 638 fg μm-3 and the lowest 147 fg μm-3. For 979/62 these values were 1 036 fg μm-3 and 148 fg μm-3 respectively. The carbohydrate results were less clear and no pattern either in response to photon flux density or temperature was obvious. The lowest and highest contents recorded for 979/67 were 62 fg μm-3 and 409 fg μ-3 and for 979162, 36 fg μm-3 and 329 fg μm-3  相似文献

Eragrostis pilosa (Linn.) P Beauv., a C4 grass native to east Africa, was grown at both ambient (350 μmol mol−1 and elevated (700 μmol mol−1) CO2 in either the presence or absence of the obligate, root hemi-parasite Striga hermonthica (Del.) Benth. Biomass of infected grasses was only 50% that of uninfected grasses at both CO2 concentrations, with stems and reproductive tissues of infected plants being most severely affected. By contrast, CO2 concentration had no effect on growth of E. pilosa , although rates of photosynthesis were enhanced by 30–40% at elevated CO2. Infection with S. hermonthica did not affect either rates of photosynthesis or leaf areas of E. pilosa , but did bring about an increase in root:shoot ratio, leaf nitrogen and phosphorus concentration and a decline in leaf starch concentration at both ambient and elevated CO2. Striga hermonthica had higher rates of photosynthesis and shoot concentrations of soluble sugars at elevated CO2, but there was no difference in biomass relative to ambient grown plants. Both infection and growth at elevated CO2 resulted in an increase in the Δ13C value of leaf tissue of E. pilosa , with the CO2 effect being greater. The proportion of host-derived carbon in parasite tissue, as determined from δ13C values, was 27% and 39% in ambient and elevated CO2 grown plants, respectively. In conclusion, infection with S. hermonthica limited growth of E. pilosa , and this limitation was not removed or alleviated by growing the association at elevated CO2.  相似文献

Growth and development of hydroponically grown pea seedlings ( Pisum sativum L. cv. Alaska) were measured using stem and root length as well as number of leaves and lateral roots. The growth was dependent on the presence of cotyledons and was modulated by the irradiance. All plants were grown in a full nutrient solution. If grown at low irradiance (73 μmol m-2s-1) they depended more and for a longer time on the cotyledons than plants grown at high irradiance (220 μmol m-2s-1). Low irradiance caused stem elongation but decreased root length and number of lateral roots as compared to plants grown at high irradiance. The dark respiration of the leaves was measured as oxygen uptake. In plants grown at the low irradiance, excision of the cotyledons caused the rate of oxygen uptake to increase by a factor of three, and the increase was sensitive to cyanide. Decotyledonized plants showed a high respiration rate and a diminished leaf growth for their entire life cycle. CO2 fixation also increased in decotyledonized pea seedlings grown at either irradiance. The mobilization of food reserves from the seeds was positively correlated to seed dry weight, but only if the plants were grown at 73 μmol m-2s-1. Increasing dry weight of the seed enhanced top growth, whereas root growth was depressed, so that top and root responds differently with regard to that part of growth which depends on mobilization of reserves from the seed.  相似文献

Abstract: The effects of light (PFD) and nitrogen (N) supply on root respiration of new C (currently assimilated carbon, R new) and old C ( R old) were analysed in non-nodulated Medicago sativa . Plants were pre-treated with high/low PFD and high/low N supply with a regular 16/8 h light/dark cycle. Five to eight weeks after planting current photosynthates were labelled with 13C and their contribution to root respiration was continuously measured during a 24 h day/night cycle. PFD conditions during labelling were either those of the pre-treatments (control, 25 or 6 mol m-2 d-1) or, for high PFD plants, 6 mol m-2 d-1 by shortening the photoperiod or reducing irradiance. The fraction of new C in the respiratory CO2 increased during the light period, but remained constant in the dark period. In control plants, R new contributed 40 % to the daily root respiration in high PFD/high N conditions. Continuously low PFD increased (50 %) and low N decreased (26 %) the contribution of R new. Exposing plants from high PFD pre-treatments to a short photoperiod or to low PFD stimulated R old, indicating mobilisation of reserve C. This stimulation was more pronounced in plants with high N supply than in those with low N supply. Comparison with other legumes suggested that R new in root respiration was mainly defined by the ratio between the assimilatory capacity of the shoots and the maintenance costs of roots with a short-term capacity of buffering respiratory demand by mobilisation of reserves in situations of fluctuating PFD.  相似文献

Nematodes, rotifers and tardigrades from a Swedish pine forest soil were investigated in a monthly sampling programme lasting for one year. The monthly mean values of number, biomass and oxygen consumption were estimated. All groups fluctuated rather much over the year with a summer minimum (1.1 ˙ 106 animals m-2) and a winter maximum (6.3 ˙ 106 animals m-2) for the nematodes. The reasons for these fluctuations are discussed in relation to fluctuations of water content and temperature of the soil. On an annual basis a carbon budget was calculated which gave the following values for this fauna; consumption 4.3, production 0.6, respiration 0.9 and defecation 2.8 g carbon m-2.  相似文献

Dry weight (DW) and nitrogen (N) accumulation and allocation were measured in isolated plants of Danthonia richardsonii (Wallaby Grass) for 37 d following seed imbibition. Plants were grown at ≈ 365 or 735 μ L L–1 CO2 with N supply of 0·05, 0·2 or 0·5 mg N plant–1 d–1. Elevated CO2 increased DW accumulation by 28% (low-N) to 103% (high-N), following an initial stimulation of relative growth rate. Net assimilation rate and leaf nitrogen productivity were increased by elevated CO2, while N concentration was reduced. N uptake per unit root surface area was unaffected by CO2 enrichment. The ratio of leaf area to root surface area was decreased by CO2 enrichment. Allometric analysis revealed a decrease in the shoot-N to root-N ratio at elevated CO2, while the shoot-DW to root-DW ratio was unchanged. Allometric analysis showed leaf area was reduced, while root surface area was unchanged by elevated CO2, indicating a down-regulation of total plant capacity for carbon gain rather than a stimulation of mineral nutrient acquisition capacity. Overall, growth in elevated CO2 resulted in changes in plant morphology and nitrogen use, other than those associated simply with changing plant size and non-structural carbohydrate content.  相似文献

Cultivated tomato Lycopersicon esculentum (L.) Mill. cv. P-73 and its wild salt-tolerant relative L. pennellii (Correll) D'Arcy accession PE-47 growing on silica sand in a growth chamber were exposed to 0, 70, 140 and 210 m M NaCl nutrient solutions 35 days after sowing. The saline treatments were imposed for 4 days, after which the plants were rinsed with distilled water. Salinity in L. esculentum reduced leaf area and leaf and shoot dry weights. The reductions were more pronounced when sodium chloride was removed from the root medium. Reduction in leaf area and weight in L. pennellii was only observed after the recovery period. In both genotypes salinity induced a progressive reduction in leaf water potential and leaf conductance. During the recovery period leaf water potential (ψ1) and leaf conductance (g1) reached levels similar to those of control plants in wild and cultivated species, respectively. Leaf osmotic potential at full turgor (ψos) decreased in the salt treated plants of both genotypes, whereas the bulk modulus of elasticity was not affected by salinity. Leaf water potential at turgor loss point (ψtlp) and relative water content at turgor loss point (RWCtlp) appeared to be controlled by leaf osmotic potential at full turgor (ψos) and by bulk modulus of elasticity, respectively. At lowest salinity, the wild species carried out the osmotic adjustment based almost exclusively on Cl and Na+, with a marked energy savings. Under highest salinity, this species accommodate the stress through a higher expenditure of energy due to the contribution of organic solutes to the osmotic adjustment. The domesticated species carried out the osmotic adjustment based always on an important contribution of organic solutes.  相似文献

Abstract. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of water stress in sweet potato ( Ipomoea batatas L. [Lam] 'Georgia Jet') on biomass production and plant-water relationships in an enriched CO2 atmosphere. Plants were grown in pots containing sandy loam soil (Typic Paleudult) at two concentrations of elevated CO2 and two water regimes in open-top field chambers. During the first 12 d of water stress, leaf xylem potentials were higher in plants grown in a CO2 concentration of 438 and 666 μmol mol−1 than in plants grown at 364 μmol mol−1. The 364 μmol mol−1 CO2 grown plants had to be rewatered 2 d earlier than the high CO2-grown plants in response to water stress. For plants grown under water stress, the yield of storage roots and root: shoot ratio were greater at high CO2 than at 364 μmol mol−1; the increase, however, was not linear with increasing CO2 concentrations. In well-watered plants, biomass production and storage root yield increased at elevated CO2, and these were greater as compared to water-stressed plants grown at the same CO2 concentration.  相似文献

Abstract: In Mesembryanthemum crystallinum plants, treated for 9 days with 0.4 M NaCl at low light intensities (80 - 90 or 95 - 100 μE m-2 s-1; λ = 400 - 700 nm), no day/night malate level differences (Δmalate) were detected. At high light (385 - 400 μE m-2 s-1) strong stimulation of PEPC activity, accompanied by a Δmalate of 11.3 mM, demonstrated the presence of CAM metabolism. This indicates that, to evolve day/night differences in malate concentration, high light is required. Salt treatment at low light induces and increases the activity of NAD- and NADP-malic enzymes by as much as 3.7- and 3.9-fold, while at high light these values reach 6.4- and 17.7-fold, respectively. The induction of activity of both malic enzymes and PEPC (phospo enol pyruvate carboxylase) take place before Δmalate is detectable. An increase in SOD (superoxide dismutase) was observed in plants cultivated at high light in both control and salt-treated plants. However, in salt-treated plants this effect was more pronounced. Carboxylating and decarboxylating enzymes seem to be induced by a combination of different signals, i.e., salt and light intensity. Plants performing CAM, after the decrease of activity of both the decarboxylating enzymes at the beginning of the light period, showed an increase in these enzymes in darkness when the malate pool reaches higher levels. In CAM plants the activity of fumarase (Krebs cycle) is much lower than that in C3 plants. The role of mitochondria in CAM plants is discussed.  相似文献

The chlorophyll content and partitioning of assimilate of bean ( Phaseolus vulgaris L. 'Pinto') plants were determined 6 days after treatment of the second internode (I2 with 5 μg of brassinosteroid (BR), a growth-promoting steroidal lactone. Plants were grown for 6 days under equal levels (90 μmol s-1 m-2) of photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) provided by cool white fluorescent (CWF) or incandescent (INC) lamps and equal levels of far-red (28 W m-2, 700–800 nm) radiation provided by the same INC or far-red (FR) fluorescent lamps. Brassinosteroid treatment had no appreciable effect on total biomass production but caused a decrease of 15–20% dry matter distribution in the upper portion of the shoot, a small (4%) but constant increase in dry matter in l2 and a large (11–16%) increase in dry matter in the lower portion of the shoot (especially I1). Treatment with BR increased assimilate accumulation in the primary leaves, especially under INC and FR lamps, and reduced dry matter in the trifoliate leaves. BR also caused a 16–21% reduction in total leaf area and even a greater reduction in area of the trifoliate leaves, but significantly increased specific leaf weight of the primary leaves and the first trifoliate leaf and the amount of dry matter in the lateral shoots under all radiation sources. In comparison to controls, BR treatment increased dry matter accumulation in the treated internode 3.3x under CWF and 1.6x under INC or FR. BR treatment also increased chlorophyll content in the primary leaves under all radiation sources and in the trifoliate leaves under CWF and INC lamps. These findings suggest a possible mobilization role of BR and establish the importance of adequate PPFD (and photosynthate) for maximum swelling and splitting response to brassinosteroid.  相似文献

Two populations of Sericostoma personatum Spence were studied during one year in two first order woodland streams, varying in water flow and temperature regime. The life cycles look two and three years, respectively.
Numbers in drift varied with water flow, and daily elimination rates of about 1% due to catastrophic drift were found in one of the streams. Differences in elimination rates between the two populations are discussed in relation to predation, catastrophic drift, and quantity of food present during the year.
The production was about 0.9 g AFDW m-2 yr-1 in both streams, 20–22% of which was production of cases. P/B ratios were 2.4 and 3.8, and reflect differences in life cycle.
Total potential leaf consumption was estimated to about 50 g AFDW m-2 yr-1 in both streams, which makes up about 10% of yearly leaf input. The seasonal pattern of the consumption is discussed in relation to biomass, temperature and leaf input. There was little agreement between the patterns of leaf input and leaf consumption.  相似文献

The effect of fruit removal on gas exchange, water relations, chlorophyll and non-structural carbohydrate content of leaves from mature, field-grown plum trees ( Prunus domestica L. cv. Stanley) was determined over 2 consecutive growing seasons. Removal of fruits during stage II of fruit development decreased CO2 assimilation rate within 24 h from 12.6 to 8.5 μmol m-2 s-1 in 1986, and from 12.1 to 10.2 μmol m-2 s-1 in 1987. Depression of net photosynthesis persisted for at least 5 days and was greatest in the early afternoon. Recovery of the CO2 assimilation rate to pretreatment levels coincided in defruited trees with vegetative growth that was more than 5-fold that of fruiting trees in the first 6 weeks after fruit removal in 1986. Estimated photorespiration was similar in both fruiting and defruited trees. The stomatal contribution to the decrease of CO2 assimilation rate, calculated from assimilation/intercellular CO2 curves, ranged from 31 to 46%. Defruiting did not affect leaf water potential, but decreased leaf osmotic potential. Leaf levels of chlorophyll, fructose, glucose, sorbitol and sucrose were not affected by defruiting, whereas starch content increased up to 51% in leaves of defruited trees within 24 h after fruit removal. However, because of the small starch pool present in plum leaves (<1.9% dry weight) it is unlikely that starch accumulation was responsible for the observed decline in CO2 assimilation rate after fruit removal. The decrease of CO2 assimilation rate is discussed in relation to the hypothesis of assimilate demand regulating photosynthesis through a feedback mechanism.  相似文献

Variations in water binding strength, water relations and the accumulation of solutes during water stress of three durum wheat ( Triticum durum Desf.) cultivars are reported and discussed. Water binding strength was determined by constructing adsorption isotherms at 5 and 20°C and by calculating the differential enthalpy (ΔH) after van't Hoff.
Reducing sugars, proline, K+ and Cl were the major contributors to osmotic adjustment. Solutes, such as quaternary ammonium compounds, and non-reducing sugars contributed to osmotic potential at full turgor, but did not increase in proportion to water stress. Genotypic differences have been observed for K+ accumulation capability, the water-stressed leaves of cv. Capeiti 8 showing the largest increase. The same cultivar demonstrated the most negative ΔH values, indicative of strongly bound water, and the highest integrated enthalpy (ΔHinf) values for leaf moisture below 0.1 g H2O per g dry weight, i.e. in the isotherm region where water was presumably chemisorbed to the charged groups of macromolecules. The accumulation of ions (Cl, K+) and proline was concurrent with an increase in the binding-strength of tightly and weakly bound water, respectively.  相似文献

Six cultivars of spring barley ( Hordeum vulgare L. cvs Salve, Nümberg II, Bomi, Risø 1508, Mona and Sv 73 608) were grown in water culture for three weeks with various combinations of mineral supply and differential roots/shoot temperatures during the growth period. Most important for growth and accumulation of N, K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ was the mineral supply, followed by the root temperature and the choice of cultivar. Treatments with low mineral supply or low root temperature induced a uniform reduction in growth and accumulation of the ions studied. The effects of low mineral supply and low root temperature on growth and N accumulation was additive, which indicates that these factors exert their influence independently of each other.
Roots grown at 10°C were smaller and Rb+(86Rb) influx was higher than in roots grown at 20°C. It is suggested that the control of Rb+(86Rb) influx is affected by the root temperature and the age of the plants. The higher 86Rb+ (86Rb) influx into the low temperature roots could not compensate for the smaller root size. However, the lower total mineral accumulation made up for the needs of the smaller plants and cannot explain the reduction in growth.  相似文献

A recognized invasive weed, Canada thistle ( Cirsium arvense L. Scop.) was grown at ambient and pre-ambient concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide [CO2] (373 and 287 μmol mol−1, respectively) at three levels of supplemental nitrogen (N) (3, 6 and 14.5 m M ) from seeding until flowering [77 days after sowing (DAS)]. The primary objective of the study was to determine if N supply limited the potential photosynthetic and growth response of this species to the increase in atmospheric [CO2] which occurred during the 20th century (i.e. approximately 290 to 370 μmol mol−1 CO2). Leaf photosynthesis increased both as a function of growth [CO2] and N supply during the first 46 DAS. Although by 46 DAS photosynthetic acclimation was observed relative to a common measurement CO2 concentration, there was no interaction with N supply. Both [CO2] and N increased biomass, relative growth rates and leaf area whereas root : shoot ratio was increased by CO2 and decreased by increasing N; however, N supply did not effect the relative response to [CO2] for any measured vegetative parameter up to 77 DAS. Due to the relative stimulation of shoot biomass, total above-ground N increased at elevated [CO2] for all levels of supplemental N, but nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) did not differ as a function of [CO2]. Overall, these data suggest that any potential response to increased atmospheric [CO2] in recent decades for this noxious weedy species was probably not limited by nitrogen supply.  相似文献

Abstract. A field study was conducted to determine the relationship of solar-excited chlorophyll a fluorescence to net CO2 assimilation rate in attached leaves. The Fraunhofer line-depth principle was used to measure fluorescence at 656.3 nm wavelength while leaves remained exposed to full sunlight and normal atmospheric pressures of CO2 and O2. Fluorescence induction kinetics were observed when leaves were exposed to sunlight after 10 min in darkness. Subsequently, fluorescence varied inversely with assimilation rate. In the C4 Zea mays , fluorescence decreased from 2.5 to 0.8 mW m-2 nm-1 as CO2 assimilation rate increased from 1 to 8 μmol m-2 s-1 (r2= 0.520). In the C3 Liquidambar styraciflua and Pinus taeda , fluorescence decreased from 6 to 2 mW m-2 nm-1 as assimilation rate increased from 2 to 5 or 0 to 2 μmol m-2 s-1 (r2= 0.44 and 0.45. respectively). The Fraunhofer line-depth principle enables the simultaneous measurement of solar-excited fluorescence and CO2 assimilation rate in individual leaves, but also at larger scales. Thus, it may contribute significantly to field studies of the relationship of fluorescence to photosynthesis.  相似文献
