Abstract A contribution to the fossil Silicoflagellates of the late Miocene in Central Italy. - A microscopic analysis of fourteen diatomite samples from a Messinian (late Miocene) stratigraphic series, in central-eastern Italy, has been carried out in order to verify the presence of Silicoflagellates. The skeletons of eight taxa were found in good condition and identified. The most abundant and continuous in the stratigraphic series examined are Dictyocha fibula and Distephanus speculum, also known in the present-day seas; Cannopilus sphaericus, a very rare and interesting species extinct in the Miocene, is limited to only two samples. On the basis of the Silicoflagellates found, it is possible to suggest that they lived in an open sea with 30–40‰ salinity and a temperature of 10–20°C. A very similar situation is present nowadays in the middle-western Adriatic Sea. 相似文献

The aim of this paper is to enlarge knowledge about still poorly documented and understood record of Lagomorpha (Mammalia) from the Late Miocene of Moldova. The lagomorph material from two new Late Miocene localities, Razeni (MN11/12), Gradishte (MN12), and re-sampling locality Chimislyia (MN12), of Southern Moldova, is described in detail here. The localities yielded small vertebrate fauna including five lagomorph taxa: Prolagus cf. oeningensis, “Proochotona” cf. eximia, Alilepus laskarewi, “Proochotona” sp., and Alilepus sp. P. cf. oeningensis is described for the first time in the studied area. A short review of the lagomorph record from the Republic of Moldova is provided. This contribution outlines the importance of the lagomorphs for biostratigraphic purposes, and highlighs the gaps in our knowledge related to the faunal succession in this area. 相似文献

New murids of Late Miocene (medial Baodean Chinese Mammal Unit) age from Inner Mongolia, northern China, and from Yunnan Province, southern China, are described. Hansdebruijnia perpusilla nov. sp. represents the earliest known and morphologically most primitive species of the genus, which is known from the latest Miocene of Europe and western Asia. The new species suggests an eastern Palaearctic origin of Hansdebruijnia. “Progonomys” yunnanensisQIU and STORCH, 1990 from Lufeng, Yunnan Province, is referred to Linomys nov. gen. New samples from Leilao, Yuanmou County, Yunnan Province, are included in this species, although this population is somewhat more primitive than that from Lufeng. Leilaomys zhudingi nov. gen. and sp. from Leilao shows a unique combination of apomorphic and plesiomorphic characters, which suggest an early divergence from the murid stem. The new findings indicate that our knowledge of the early radiation of murids in southeast Asia is still in its infancy. 相似文献

Microbial deposits in upper Miocene carbonates, Mallorca, Spain 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The Santanyí Limestone, a 30-35-m thick upper Miocene limestone succession cropping out in Mallorca, contains abundant microbialite deposits, the shape, microstructure and texture of which was controlled by environmental factors: depth, energy and salinity. Three main types of microbialites are distinguished: (1) domed (DNOS) and stratiform, mostly undulate (UNOS) non-oolitic stromatolites, (2) undulate oolitic laminites (UOL) and (3) domed-oolitic thrombolites (DOTs). Based on lithofacies associations and occurrence of microbialite types, the Santanyí Limestone succession is subdivided into five stratigraphic units (I to V) separated by sharp surfaces. Within units II, III and V, the vertical evolution of microbialites was induced by changes in accommodation space/depth: (1) intertidal/very-shallow subtidal conditions at the base were induced by flooding over a wide area, (2) continued sea-level rise caused submergence to subtidal conditions, and (3) a significant bathymetric decrease created the sharp surface bounding these units. In units II and III, NOS accumulated in variable energy and depth conditions, as buildups with thick, somewhat discontinuous and mostly non-isopachous lamination, surrounded by oolitic grainstones with wave and current structures and oolitic intraclasts. In contrast, thin and generally regular and smooth lamination of NOS in unit V suggests, along with the absence of oolite grainstones and macrobiota, calm and restricted, maybe more saline, conditions.UOL, consisting of oolitic layers separated by thin micritic laminae, developed adjacent to NOS in units II and III and to DOT at the lower part of unit III, in shallow-water and low-energy conditions. Both ooids and micrite laminae have evidence for biogenesis. Micritized ooids containing microbial remains are common. Micritic laminae in UOL and the dark micritic laminae in NOS are thought to represent bacterially enhanced calcite precipitation and lithification during periods of low sedimentation.Oolitic thrombolites containing macrobiota are only present in unit III. They represent deeper and open-marine conditions affected by high-energy events, in which microbially mediated precipitation favoured microbialite accretion and lithification. 相似文献

Several isolated cheek teeth and mandibular specimens of Rhinocerotidae (Mammalia, Perissodactyla) from the upper Miocene Namurungule Formation in Samburu Hills, Kenya, are redescribed. Previously, these specimens had been identified as Chilotheridium pattersoni, Chilotheridium sp., Paradiceros mukirii, and Paradiceros sp. They are reidentified here as documenting the genus Brachypotherium based on their bucco-lingually broad molariform upper premolars with short crochet and flattened buccal walls on both upper and lower molars, the latter having a shallow external groove. Comparisons with other Brachypotherium species suggest that the present specimens belong to Brachypotherium sp. cf. B. minor. The presence of Brachypotherium in the Samburu Hills, at ca. 9.5 Ma, is concordant with the paleoenvironment (presence of lacustrine and river environments) known for this locality during the early late Miocene. 相似文献

In this paper the ostracod assemblages recovered from several brackish Late Miocene Italian deposits have been analysed from a palaeobiogeographical perspective. During late Tortonian-early Messinian it is possible to recognize in Italy rich ostracod assemblages characterized by a wide contingent of taxa with central European or Mediterranean affinity, while only few brackish and freshwater ostracods show Paratethyan affinity. The recognized composition of the ostracod assemblages matches the palaeogeographic setting of the palaeo-Mediterranean/Paratethys at that moment. In fact during late Tortonian-early Messinian the palaeo-Mediterranean and Paratethysian domains were divided and, even if the connection via the present Marmara Sea-Strimon Basin was still open, the different salinity between them represented an ecological barrier, preventing faunal exchanges. Since normal aquatic migration was impossible, it must be assumed that the Paratethyan-like taxa entered the palaeo-Mediterranean area via passive dispersal by aquatic birds. On the contrary, the ostracod assemblages from the Italian Lago-Mare deposits show the absolute predominance of Paratethyan taxa, which, according to the known palaeogeographic setting during the late Messinian Lago-Mare event, could actively migrate from the Paratethys domain, colonizing the palaeo-Mediterranean, whose endemic fauna was severely impoverished by the Messinian salinity crisis and the following water dilution. 相似文献

A high-resolution palynological study of the cyclically bedded Faneromeni section (upper Tortonian-lower Messinian) on Crete (Greece) is presented. This study aims to recognize orbitally-driven variations in the palynological record and to validate the age model based on the astronomical calibration of the sedimentary cycles. Four palynology-based environmental proxies were utilised using interpretations of fossil dinoflagellate associations based on modern ecological characteristics. Cross-spectral analysis between the proxy records and astronomical target curve, the 65°N summer insolation, yielded in most cases significant spectral power and coherence in the precession and/or obliquity frequency bands. Precession-controlled variations in the proxy records are related to lithology and indicate that maxima in continental input and minima in sea surface salinity coincide with sapropel formation. The influence of obliquity is most clearly reflected in the index of continental versus marine palynomorphs (S-D). The absence of a distinct time lag relative to obliquity indicates that the 41-kyr component in continental input is controlled by oscillations in regional Mediterranean climate rather than by glacial cyclicity. Phase relations in the different astronomical frequency bands of the spectrum, as compared with the Mediterranean Pliocene, essentially confirm the validity of the Miocene astronomical time scale. Finally, a major non-cyclic change in the palynological assemblage at 6.68 Ma indicates enhanced salinity and decreased river discharge. This shift coincides with a significant drop in sedimentation rate informally termed the “Early Messinian Sediment starvation Event”. 相似文献

The evolutionary pattern of the molar morphology of the small caviomorph (Octodontidae) Neophanomys from the late Miocene Cerro Azul Formation of central Argentina is analyzed. Two new species (chronomorphs) are recognized, which constitute an anagenetically evolving lineage with a gradual and directional pattern of increasing molar hypsodonty. Dental changes related to increasing hypsodonty are comparable to those of the octodontid lineage Chasichimys also recovered from the Cerro Azul Formation. However, Neophanomys shows comparatively less variation in gross morphology and there are no evidences that this lineage achieved euhypsodonty. In contrast, important changes in enamel microstructure (schmelzmuster) are observed among different populations of Neophanomys, supporting the hypothesis that these changes can occur at least partially independently from modifications in dental gross morphology. The patterns of dental evolution detected in the Neophanomys and Chasichimys-Xenodontomys lineages and the unequivocal polarity of the changes involved, related to increasing hypsodonty, reinforce the hypothesis that chronological differences exist among late Miocene outcroppings of Cerro Azul Formation in central Argentina. 相似文献

Some relatively rare carnivore remains from Pikermi are studied. The present specimens include Simocyon primigenius(ROTH and WAGNER, 1854), Promeles palaeatticus(WEITHOFER, 1888), Martes woodwardiPILGRIM, 1931, Felis atticaWAGNER, 1857 and Machairodus giganteus(WAGNER, 1848), as well as some postcranial remains that resemble Enhydriodon? latipesPILGRIM, 1931 and are assigned to Mustelidae gen. et spec. indet. Some of these species were not known until now but from their holotypes as M. woodwardi and E.? latipes. Other species such as F. attica and M. giganteus are better known but from relatively scant material. Since the material of the earlier mentioned species comes from Pikermi, their type locality, it is of especial importance and improves our knowledge for the Pikermi carnivores and their relationships to other species. In some cases where the material comes from ossiferous blocks, the accompanying faunal context is discussed. 相似文献

Biostratigraphy and biochronology of the Late Miocene of central Argentina is analyzed through evolutionary patterns of octodontoid rodents. The studied faunas were found in continental sediments assigned to the Cerro Azul and Saldungaray formations (La Pampa and Buenos Aires provinces, respectively). Taphonomic attributes of recovered mammals, linked mostly to the development of paleosols or to predators’ activities, constraint the deposition lapse to short intervals. A biostratigraphic scheme based mainly on the anagenetic pattern of change in the octodontoid rodent lineage Chasichimys-Xenodontomys is proposed. Since there is no stratigraphic superposition among the studied levels, relationships among deposits are established through the polarity evidenced by the stage of evolution of chronomorphs of this lineage. Five new biozones for the Late Miocene of central Argentina are recognized. Evidence of other anagenetic sequences, and general trends of increasing hypsodonty in octodontoids, support this proposal. The results enhance the value of the “stage of evolution” concept as a correlation tool in biostratigraphic and biochronologic studies, mainly when applied through phyletic sequences. 相似文献

Quantitative and qualitative analyses based on planktonic foraminifera of two sections (Oued Derdoussa and Djebel Meni) from lower Chelif basin (northern Algeria) enable us to identify for the first time a sequence of bioevents calibrated with the geomagnetic polarity time scale. The identified bioevents of late Miocene formations are useful for a high-resolution correlation in the whole western Mediterranean at local and regional scales. In particular, this work reveals that the sequence covers an interval of time that extends from the upper Tortonian up to the pre-evaporite Messinian period. Indeed, the base of the succession starts with a change in the coiling direction (from dextral to sinistral) of Neogloboquadrina acostaensis as the first bioevent. This later corresponds to the bioevent (1–8) assigned to the Tortonian sediments. This period is marked by the presence of Globorotalia menardii in sinistral coiled form that was substituted gradually with dextral coiled. The Tortonian/Messinian (T/M) boundary coincides to some extent with a sharp replacement of G. menardii group (I and II) with the first common occurrence (FCO) of Globorotalia miotumida plexus few meters below the development of the Tripoli diatomite formation (bioevent 9). This later is dominated mainly by highly convex species (G. miotumida plexus) marked by the presence of Globorotalia mediterranea in contrast with the marly formation at the base of the section. In this part, the recorded bioevents (10 to 17) are assigned to the Messinian sediments. Thus, the Tripoli formation shows the influx of Globorotalia nicolae and a small incursion of the dextrally coiled of Globorotalia scitula at the top of Oued Derdoussa section as a local bioevent that may be related to the local palaeoenvironment. We notice the absence of the change in the coiling from sinistral to dextral of N. acostaensis during the upper Messinian, this may be due to the coincidence of this bioevent with the barren levels. 相似文献

Ningxiatherium euryrhinus sp. nov. is a relatively large elasmothere rhino from the Linxia Basin in northwestern China found in the early Bahean, which corresponds to the early Vallesian (MN 9), ca. 11.1 Ma. It is much larger than the extant Ceratotherium simum and has a single horn. Ningxiatherium is similar to the late Miocene Parelasmotherium from Gansu and Shanxi, but differs in having partially ossified nasal septum, terminal nasal horn boss, shallower nasal notch above the P3/P4 boundary, and much shorter premolars. N. euryrhinus sp. nov. differs from N. longirhinus from the late Miocene of Zhongning, Ningxia in northwestern China by its larger size, relatively wider nasals, shallower nasal notch, and sub-quadrangular occlusal surface of M3. In the Linxia Basin, the other early late Miocene (Bahean or Vallesian) elasmotheres are known from complete skulls or isolated teeth. They include two genera and three species: Parelasmotherium linxiaense, P. simplum, and Iranotherium morgani. They lack a nasal septum, but Ningxiatherium has one. The age of N. euryrhinus is early late Miocene based on direct association with biochronologic indicator taxa, such as Dinocrocuta gigantea, Hipparion dongxiangense, and Chilotherium primigenius. N. euryrhinus is more primitive than N. longirhinus sp. nov. in having a sub-quadrangular M3, a shallower nasal notch, and the presence of DP1 in adults.

Paleomagnetic analysis of the section of Purcal (Granada Basin) shows that the entire sequence has reversed polarity. The micromammal fauna contains elements that are typical of the latest Miocene, and others that are earliest Pliocene; both are characteristic of humid surroundings. The section should be placed in Chron C3r, and the fauna indicates the Miocene-Pliocene transition. 相似文献

Serum samples from 210 wild ruminants collected between 2006 and 2007 in southern Spain were tested for antibodies against
bluetongue virus (BTV) by means of a competitive ELISA assay. Eighty-seven of the 210 wild ruminants analysed (41%) showed
antibodies against BTV. Statistically significant differences were found in the seroprevalence among species: 66% (65 of 98)
for red deer (Cervus elaphus), 50% (ten of 20) for fallow deer (Dama dama), 33% (three of nine) for mouflon (Ovis aries musimon) and 11% (nine of 83) for Spanish ibex (Capra pyrenaica). Overall, the sites where seropositive wild ruminants were found coincide with the areas where BTV had been detected in
livestock, but in eastern Sierra Morena, the virus circulated in wild ruminants, although it had not been detected in domestic
ruminants in the same areas. Wild ruminants over 1-year of age (sub-adults and adults) had significantly higher seroprevalences
than juvenile animals. Statistically significant differences were also observed between BTV seroprevalence and management
(free-ranging vs. captivity) with higher prevalence in free-ranging animals. The high seroprevalences obtained suggest that
BTV is widespread in wild ruminants in southern Spain. This factor could have an important influence on the evolution of the
infection in domestic livestock and indicates the need to include wild ruminant species in BTV surveillance or control programs.

During the Late Miocene the Mediterranean experienced a period of extreme salinity fluctuations known as the Messinian Salinity Crisis (MSC). The causes of these high amplitude changes in salinity are not fully understood but are thought to be the result of restriction of flow between the Mediterranean and Atlantic, eustatic sea level change and climate. Results from a new Atmospheric General Circulation Model (AGCM) simulation of Late Miocene climate for the Mediterranean and adjacent regions are presented here. The model, HadAM3, was forced by a Late Miocene global palaeogeography, higher CO2 concentrations and prescribed sea surface temperatures. The results show that fluvial freshwater fluxes to the Mediterranean in the Late Miocene were around 3 times greater than for the present day. Most of this water was derived from North African rivers, which fed the Eastern Mediterranean. This increase in runoff arises from a northward shift in the intertropical convergence zone caused by a reduced latitudinal gradient in global sea surface temperatures. The northwards drainage of the Late Miocene Chad Basin also contributes. Numerical models designed to explore Late Miocene salt precipitation regimes in the Mediterranean, which typically make use of river discharge fluxes within a few tens of percent of present-day values, may therefore be grossly underestimating these fluxes.Although the AGCM simulated Late Miocene river discharge is high, the model predicts a smaller net hydrologic budget (river discharge plus precipitation minus evaporation) than for present day. We discuss a possible mechanism by which this change in the hydrologic budget, coupled with a reduced connection between the Mediterranean and the global ocean, could cause the salinity fluctuations of the MSC. 相似文献

This paper deals with the taphonomic analysis of the late Miocene bone assemblage from the Cerro Azul Formation at Telén (La Pampa Province, Argentina). The faunal assemblage was assigned to the Huayquerian mammal age (late Miocene). The fossiliferous section shows a homogeneous lithology, and is interpreted as a loess deposit with two similar and slightly developed palaeosols, classified as calcic vertisols. The studied sample comprises 5598 remains anatomically and taxonomically determined. They were collected from an area of about 48,000 m2, appearing randomly distributed through the section and with low density. Most remains are small- to very small-sized, disarticulated, and very fragmented. Different taphonomical histories are inferred for microvertebrates and macromammals. The microvertebrate assemblage is interpreted as the result of predator activities. After a brief period of pre-burial exposure, remains were dispersed from the original depositional area. On the other hand, a natural and gradual death process is envisaged for macromammals, followed by a long period of exposure to weathering and dispersal by physical agents. Remains of both groups, once buried, suffered the diagenetic processes of the host rock. Consequently, the fossil assemblage from Telén would represent a condensed assemblage corresponding to two distinct time spans, i.e., the accumulation of microvertebrates took place in a short time interval whereas that of macromammals occurred over a longer period, coincident with the development of both soils. 相似文献

During the last five years our continued excavations in the known late Miocene mammal localities of Macedonia (Greece) provided several new specimens of the hominoid primate Ouranopithecus macedoniensis. This new material includes maxillary and mandibular remains and it is described and compared to the old material of Ouranopithecus in the present article. The material of Ouranopithecus from the three known localities “Ravin de la Pluie” (RPl), “Xirochori 1” (XIR) and “Nikiti 1” (NKT) includes a complete series of tooth rows representing all wearing stages. Thus, the study of the dental wear of Ouranopithecus upper and lower teeth is studied and compared to that of the recent hominoids Gorilla and Pan, as well as to Australopithecus afarensis. The latter species is well known by a series of tooth rows of different wearing stages. The canine’s attrition of Ouranopithecus has a more derived pattern than that of the recent hominoids (Gorilla and Pan) and less derived than A. afarensis. The p3 of Ouranopithecus has similar attrition to that of A. afarensis, the attrition of the molars in Ouranopithecus, A. afarensis and Pan follows a similar pattern, while in Gorilla it is different. 相似文献
