A long-standing controversy exists about the comparative utility of metric and non-metric traits as biological indicators in population studies. We hypothesize that the underlying scale which determines the presence or absence of a cranial non-metric trait is an expression of general and/or local size variation in the cranium. Therefore metric and non-metric traits will share a common developmental determination. The hypothesis implies that the underlying scale of a non-metric trait will be correlated with measures of cranial size and shape. Forty-eight cranial metric and twenty-five cranial non-metric traits were scored on the left side of adult male crania from four North American Indian populations. New threshold traits were generated for each non-metric trait by dichotomizing discriminant scores produced by discriminant function analysis. The discriminant analysis was performed using metric traits to discriminate between groups formed by non-metric trait presence or absence. Every non-metric trait tested was significantly correlated with its threshold trait in at least one population. The correlations were of moderate to high levels depending on the trait and population sample studied. This implies that metric and non-metric traits share a moderate to high degree of developmental determination. The cause of these correlations may lie in the common effects that growth and development of the soft tissue and functional spaces of the cranium exert on both metric and non-metric traits.  相似文献

现代人群形成与分化导致生活在世界不同地区的人类形成了具有明显体质特征差别的人群(或种族)。对更新世末期及全新世以来不同地理区域近代和现代人群体质特征差别、相互亲缘关系的分析是现代人群形成与分化研究的重要组成部分。本文通过对21项头骨非测量特征在近代和现代中国人群, 以及现代非洲和欧洲人群共330例标本的出现率和表现特点的观察和数据分析, 发现绝大多数特征的出现率或表现特点在三个人群间都具有不同程度的差异, 有些特征在人群间的差异甚至非常明显。与非洲及欧洲人群相比, 现代中国人头骨总体显得纤细, 眉弓、角圆枕、颧三角、颧结节等反映头骨粗壮程度的特征在现代中国人群的发育明显弱于非洲和欧洲人群。此外, 现代中国人群还具有一些明显不同于非洲和欧洲人群的头骨非测量特征, 包括锐利的眶外下缘、相对平坦的眉间鼻根点、较圆隆的颅侧壁、平坦的顶孔人字区、深弧形的上颌颧突下缘, 梯形和左右不一的鼻额-额颌缝走向等。采用判别分析可以将67.0%—79.5%的标本正确地判别归入其原来所属的组群。其中对中国人群的正确判别率分别达到70.4%和82.9%。个体标本分布显示非洲人群表现较大的分散性, 而中国和欧洲人群样本的分布明显密集集中, 提示中国和欧洲人群似乎具有更多的衍生性特征。本研究还发现多数在人群间差别显著的头骨非测量特征与头骨粗壮程度有关, 作者对相关的问题进行了分析探讨。  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to question the utility of non-metric traits as predictors of age, race, and sex by comparing a group of non-metric variables with a group of metric variables. Twelve metric variables and 15 nonmetric variables were scored on 317 crania from the Terry Collection at the U. S. National Museum, and later statistically evaluated with a number of multivariate analysis programs and a stepwise discriminant program. The metric variables were found to be significant sex and race discriminators, where-as the non-metric variables were non-significant. The non-metric variables were found to be better age discriminators than the metric variables, even though neither could be classified as highly significant. It was concluded that non-metric traits by themselves have very little discriminatory value and should be used instead to supplement other osteological measurements and observations.  相似文献

Bilateral asymmetry is an important field of study in anthropology. The evaluation of bilateral asymmetry of 44 dental non-metric traits of permanent dentition is carried out in this study on 376 adult skulls from different archaeological sites in Argentina (South America). From a total of 44 traits studied, just 12 (27% of the total traits expressed) presented Bilateral Index (BI) values lower than 100% (between 92% and 99%). Results suggest that the expression of all dental traits is probably bilateral. These results show the importance of analysis of bilateral asymmetry for assignment of taxonomic and population value of non-metric dental traits.  相似文献

Fluctuating asymmetry (FA), used as an indicator of developmental stability, has long been hypothesized to be negatively correlated with genetic variability as a consequence of more variable organisms being better suited to buffer developmental pathways against environmental stress. However, it is still a matter of debate if this is due to metabolic properties of enzymes encoded by certain key loci or rather to overall genomic heterozygosity. Previous analyses suggest that there might be a general difference between homeo- and poikilotherms in that only the latter tend to exhibit the negative correlation predicted by theory. In the present study, we addressed these questions by analysing roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) from five German populations with regard to FA in metric and non-metric skull and mandible traits as well as variability at eight microsatellite loci. Genetic variability was quantified by heterozygosity and mean d2 parameters, and although the latter did not show any relationship with FA, we found for the first time a statistically significant negative correlation of microsatellite heterozygosity and non-metric FA among populations. Because microsatellites are non-coding markers, this may be interpreted as evidence for the role of overall genomic heterozygosity in determining developmental stability. To test if the threshold character of non-metric traits is responsible for the metric vs non-metric difference we also carried out calculations where we treated our metric traits as threshold values. This, however, did not yield significant correlations between FA and genetic variability either.  相似文献

The appearance of non-metric skeletal characters in vertebrates results mainly from basic genetic control, as proved and documented for house mice and humans. Although the heritability of non-metric traits, mainly the presence of foramina and similar structures for blood vessels and nerves or dental occlusal variants, have been evaluated as rather low, the simultaneous consideration of several traits allows estimation of epigenetic variation in time and space as a result of genetic relationship. Thus, the main use of non-metric characters has been aimed at assessing epigenetic variability and divergence among populations. Applications extend from the problem of genetic isolation of populations, the lack of reproductive contact, detection of genetic drift, systematic studies to clarify species taxonomy, to phylogenetic interpretation.

Additionally, non-directional deviations from bilateral symmetry in non-metric characters, e.g. fluctuating asymmetry, could be caused by current environmental conditions in general. Fluctuating asymmetry is regarded as a measure of developmental instability to indicate the presence of genomic changes or the influence of contamination and/or habitat deterioration, and is also used as a further population parameter with integrated information. However, standpoints on the use of fluctuating asymmetry are quite inconsistent, fluctuating themselves between considering it a powerful biomonitoring tool to being merely a curious scientific toy.  相似文献

Out of the five late Roman-early Byzantine cemeteries at Sayala, the three large burial complexes CI-III were found to represent the same population not only on the basis of 76·6% of the metric features already studied, but also of 72·9% of the 48 non-metric features examined in the present paper. The remaining features, which show different frequencies, were most probably related to some social and/or genetic isolation of the three subgroups (“lineages”) of the same basic population.The left-right asymmetry of the frequencies was practically irrelevant; sex differences were however present in one-third of the features observed.Some of the traits showed unusually high frequencies, revealing a high rate of inbreeding within a homogeneous population.To evaluate the relationships among the CI-III people and the neighbouring populations, 22 discrete traits were compared with the same traits studied in 11 Ancient Egyptian samples by Berry, Berry & Ucko (1967) and in 6 contemporary African Negro samples by Rightmire (1972). It was shown that the Sayala CI-III population does not resemble either of these groups. The fourth contemporary Sayala sample from A cemetery was also found to be not related with the CI-III sample on the basis of the same traits. The fifth contemporary Sayala sample from N cemetery was too small to be tested. Moreover, the comparison between the CI-III population and the C-group population of Sayala also revealed the lack of genetic continuity. The isolated position found in the CI-III population of Sayala agrees with the hypothesis that it would represent the Blemmyes, people originating from the Eastern Desert.  相似文献

Mesiodistal crown diameters of I1 through M1 and six non-metric crown traits in permanent dentition of Japanese-American F1 hybrids were compared with those of the parental populations. The hybrids were born of Japanese females and American males, both Caucasians and American Blacks, after World War II and brought up at Elizabeth Saunders Home in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. The comparisons were undertaken by means of multivariate analysis methods such as principal component analysis, distance and similarity coefficients and multidimensional scaling. The F1 hybrids generally occupy an intermediate position of the two parental populations, and this is particularly evident in size component of the crown measurements and in distance analysis of frequencies of the non-metric crown traits. The shape component of the crown measurements, however, not necessarily follows such a rule and suggests a more complicated gene control than in the case of the size component. Also, each measurement and frequency of non-metric trait of tooth crowns in F1 hybrids is not uniformly at the middle position between their parental populations but this is true when they are analyzed as multivariables.  相似文献

The influence of some environmental factors on size and shape of mandible in BALB/cJLacSto inbred mice was studied during prenatal development by multivariate morphometric methods. The factors under study were: introduction of methylthiouracil into the diet of pregnant females; injections of pregnant females with adrenocorticotropic or parathyroid hormones; keeping the females at low temperatures (two regimes). It was established that the changes of mandible shape caused by the changes of conditions of prenatal development did not achieve the level of differences between strains, and mouse strain identification was possible under various conditions of animal's keeping. It has been shown by comparison of these results with preceding data that the nonmetric skeletal traits were more stable to the influence of the same factors than morphometric ones. This gives us the foundations to consider the method of evaluation of phenetic distances between natural groups of animals for the set of non-metric threshold skeletal traits more suitable for detection of genetical differentiation of wild populations.  相似文献

Four skeletal samples from the states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Andhra Pradesh in India are compared using cranial non-metric traits. Fifty-nine dental non-metric traits were scored using Arizona State University Dental Anthropology System on a sample of teeth from 350 human skeletons excavated at three sites in the lower middle Euphrates valley. The dataset was divided into six chronological subsets: Early Bronze Age, Middle Bronze Age, Early Iron Age with Neo-Assyrian period, Classical/Late Antiquity, Early Islamic (Umayyad and Abbasid) period and Modern period. The matrix of Mean Measure of Divergence values exhibited temporal homogeneity of the sample with only dental non-metric trait scores in the Modern subset differing significantly from most other subsets. Such a result suggests that no major gene flow occurred in the middle Euphrates valley between the 3rd millennium BCE and the early 2nd millennium CE. Only after the Mongolian invasion and large depopulation of northern Mesopotamia in the 13th century CE a major population change occurred when the area was taken over in the 17th century by Bedouin tribes from the Arabian Peninsula.  相似文献

In 1986 a palaeolithic triple burial was discovered near Dolní Věstonice (Czech Republic). The occurrence of anatomic variants in all three skeletons gave rise to speculations that the buried individuals may have been closely related. To test this hypothesis the skeletons were submitted to a systematic kinship analysis based on odontologic and other non-metric traits. Statistical tests showed that the coincident occurrence of several rare traits in the individuals is highly unlikely to occur at random. This and further data included in the analysis therefore suggest that the three individuals buried together were genetically related and actually belonged to one family. At present there is no standardized method to derive frequencies from bilateral non-metric traits. In this paper the commonly used methods are evaluated in light of statistical considerations and degree of sample preservation. In particular, we explore the question of dependence between sides for the bilateral traits. Several workers have tested for bilateral trait correlation in incorrect ways, confusing tests for differences in side frequencies with tests for independence. An easy method to test for independence, using the chi-squared test, is recommended. This test is used on 16 bilateral traits in a large sample of prehistoric carnia from Central California and significant dependence is found for all 16 of these traits. We suggest the traditional method of deriving frequencies be used. Both sides of the cranium should be considered, dividing the number of times the trait occurs by the number of sides available for observation. This method can be used even in poorly preserved samples. Side to side correlation may be compensated for by modifying the constants subtracted in the mean measure of divergence and in the expression for the approximate variance of the mean measure of divergence when the samples are drawn from identical populations.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to add to our understanding of skeletal material from the American pioneer period. Eight White and two Negro skeletons were washed out of their graves during flood conditions of 1973, but the recovery and subsequent storage of this material permitted commingling, and identification of the individual skeletons had to be undertaken before the material could be analyzed. Variation in age, sex, race, metric, non-metric traits and condition of the bone was considered prior to the analysis of the material. When these methods failed, ultra-violet fluorescence of the material and the matching of individual bones with colour slides taken at the time of the excavation were employed. Identification of all bones for the ten skeletons was impossible. However, on the basis of non-metric trait variation a father and son pairing is tentatively identified. Analysis of this material shows the early pioneer to have been a rather tall and robust individual displaying little bone pathology, but advanced pathology in the dental tissue and alveolar region. Historical records pertinent to this massacre validate the identification of sex, race, and age for these individuals.  相似文献

山顶洞人化石是迄今在东亚地区发现的数量最为丰富、保存状态最为完好的更新世晚期人类化石。多年来,山顶洞人作为东亚地区更新世晚期人类的代表,在研究东亚地区现代蒙古人种及美洲印第安人起源方面发挥着重要作用。随着对现代人起源与演化研究的深入,学术界对更新世晚期人类演化及现代人群形成过程的许多细节及演化机制予以了越来越多的注意,提出了现代人群出现时间及现代人群分化时间的概念。一些研究对山顶洞人的演化程度及其在东亚地区现代人群形成上的作用也提出了不同看法。为了深入探讨这些问题,本文对12项颅骨非测量特征在山顶洞人与现代中国人的表现情况进行了对比研究。发现有8项特征在山顶洞人与现代中国人之间具有不同的表现,作者认为山顶洞人在颅骨特征表现上较现代中国人具有更多的原始性。在此基础上,作者就更新世晚期人群内部变异、现代人群特征标准等问题进行了讨论。  相似文献

The human remains recovered from “Grotte supérieure de Zhoukoudian” are the best-preserved Late Pleistocene human fossils in East Asia. For decades, as the representative of the Late Pleistocene human in East Asia, the Upper Cave skulls have been playing important role in the research of origins of modern Mongoloids and American Indians. With the advance of the origin and evolution of modern humans, more attention has been paid to the details and the mechanisms for the late Pleistocene human evolution and the formation of modern human populations. Both the origin and diversification of modern humans have been stressed. Some studies further trigger the debaters on the Upper Cave Man concerning its evolutionary level and its role in the formation of modern human populations in East Asia. To further explore these problems, we examined and compared 12 non-metric features on the 3 Late Pleistocene Upper Cave skulls and 162 Holocene individuals earthed from two archaeological sites of North China (Longxian and Yanqing). Our results indicate that 8 on the 12 features have different expression patterns between Upper Cave Man and recent Chinese leading the authors to believe that more primitive expressions appeared on the Upper Cave Man than on recent Chinese populations. Based on these findings, some problems on the intragroup variation in Late Pleistocene and Holocene populations are discussed.  相似文献

Studies on discrete traits of the human cervical vertebrae, appearing at certain intervals during the last century, posed some questions regarding evolutionary processes that human cervical spine underwent during phylogenesis. To address questions of significance of these morphological traits we need first a good knowledge of the extent of their variation in modern humans. The aim of the current work was to integrate available data on the occurrence of various non-metric traits in the human cervical spine and search for the pattern of their distribution on intra- and inter-population levels. The study was based on data from five osteological samples from North America (Terry and Grant collections) and Russia (mid 20th c. and 18th c.); and data taken from literature. Traits were categorized into rare (<3%), low frequency (up to 10%), often encountered (10–30%) and characteristic for modern humans (>50% on average). Several traits showed mild to strong association with each other indicating interrelation between various spine characteristics. Of the traits analyzed, the following had consistent pattern of sex-related variability: complete dorsal ponticle, bifid spinous processes and cervical ribs; and ancestry-related variability: dorsal ponticle and bifid spinous processes. Each ancestry group (European, African, Asian and North American) had its specifics regarding the latter two traits which might be related to genetic isolation. Most of the traits, however, showed relatively similar pattern of distribution among various populations, including the pattern of within-spine variability. This suggests a common intraspecific pattern and a possible link to some fundamental characteristics of the human vertebral column.  相似文献

Comparison of the populations of four Panhandle Aspect sites (Alibates, Antelope Creek, Matthews Ranch, Footprint) using 28 non-metric traits of the skulls indicates generally close similarity among them, but the Panhandle groups show little similarity to Upper Republican. Antelope Creek and Matthews Ranch show some resemblance to the Fort Coffee skulls of the Fulton Aspect. The same two Panhandle site samples also resemble the Washita River people.
