Two Italian CO2 springs allowed us to study the long-term effect of a 350–2600 μ mol mol–1 increase in CO2 concentrations on the surface structures of leaves of Quercus ilex L. Carbon dioxide increased the quantity of cuticular waxes, above an apparent threshold of 750 μ mol mol–1 CO2. Leaf wettability was not modified by CO2 concentrations. Reduction in stomatal frequency was observable up to 750 μ mol mol–1 CO2, the slope being almost the same as that estimated for the increase in CO2 concentration from pre-industrial times to the present. At higher concentrations, CO2 seemed to exert no more impact on stomatal frequency.  相似文献

Plants of Nardus stricta growing near a cold, naturally emitting CO2 spring in Iceland were used to investigate the long-term (> 100 years) effects of elevated [CO2] on photosynthesis, biochemistry, growth and phenology in a northern grassland ecosystem. Comparisons were made between plants growing in an atmosphere naturally enriched with CO2 (≈ 790 μ mol mol–1) near the CO2 spring and plants of the same species growing in adjacent areas exposed to ambient CO2 concentrations (≈360 μ mol mol–1). Nardus stricta growing near the spring exhibited earlier senescence and reductions in photosynthetic capacity (≈25%), Rubisco content (≈26%), Rubisco activity (≈40%), Rubisco activation state (≈23%), chlorophyll content (≈33%) and leaf area index (≈22%) compared with plants growing away from the spring. The potential positive effects of elevated [CO2] on grassland ecosystems in Iceland are likely to be reduced by strong down-regulation in the photosynthetic apparatus of the abundant N. stricta species.  相似文献

Winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Hereward) plants were grown for 35 d either at 350 μ mol mol–1 CO2 or at 650 μ mol mol–1 CO2. Lipid synthesis was studied in these plants by incubating the 5th leaf on the main stem with [1–14C]acetate. Increased CO2 concentrations did not significantly affect the total incorporation of radiolabel into lipids of whole leaf tissue, but altered the distribution for individual lipid classes. Most noticeable amongst acyl lipids was the reduction in labelling of diacylglycerol and a corresponding increase in the proportion of phosphatidylcholine labelling. In the basal regions, there were similar changes and, in addition, phosphatidylglycerol labelling was particularly increased following growth in an enriched CO2 atmosphere. The stimulation of labelling of the mitochondrial-specific lipid, diphosphatidylglycerol, prompted an examination of the mitochondrial population in wheat plants. Mitochondria were localized in intact wheat sections by immunolabelling for the mitochondrial-specific chaperonin probe. Growth in elevated CO2 doubled the number of mitochondria compared to growth in ambient CO2. Fatty acid labelling was also significantly influenced following growth at elevated CO2 concentrations. Most noticeable were the changes in 16C:18C ratios for the membrane lipids, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol and monogalactosyldiacylglycerol. These data imply a change in the apportioning of newly synthesized fatty acids between the 'eukaryotic' and 'prokaryotic' pathways of metabolism under elevated CO2.  相似文献

Abstract. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of water stress in sweet potato ( Ipomoea batatas L. [Lam] 'Georgia Jet') on biomass production and plant-water relationships in an enriched CO2 atmosphere. Plants were grown in pots containing sandy loam soil (Typic Paleudult) at two concentrations of elevated CO2 and two water regimes in open-top field chambers. During the first 12 d of water stress, leaf xylem potentials were higher in plants grown in a CO2 concentration of 438 and 666 μmol mol−1 than in plants grown at 364 μmol mol−1. The 364 μmol mol−1 CO2 grown plants had to be rewatered 2 d earlier than the high CO2-grown plants in response to water stress. For plants grown under water stress, the yield of storage roots and root: shoot ratio were greater at high CO2 than at 364 μmol mol−1; the increase, however, was not linear with increasing CO2 concentrations. In well-watered plants, biomass production and storage root yield increased at elevated CO2, and these were greater as compared to water-stressed plants grown at the same CO2 concentration.  相似文献

1. Ten herbaceous species were grown over a 4-month period under ambient (360 μmol mol–1) and elevated (610 μmol mol–1) atmospheric CO2 conditions. Plants were inoculated with the arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungus Glomus mosseae and given a phosphorus (P) supply which was not immediately available to the plants.
2. Multiple harvests were taken in order to determine whether the effect of elevated CO2 on mycorrhizal colonization and phosphorus inflow was independent of its effect on plant growth.
3. All species grew faster under elevated CO2 and carbon partitioning was altered, generally in favour of the shoots. All species responded similarly to elevated CO2.
4. Elevated CO2 did not affect the percentage of root length colonized by AM fungi, but the total amount of colonized root length was increased, because the plants were bigger.
5. Elevated CO2 increased total P content, but had little or no effect on P concentration. At a given age, P inflow was stimulated by elevated CO2, but when root length was taken into account the CO2 effect disappeared.
6. In these host species there is no evidence for a direct effect of elevated CO2 on mycorrhizal functioning, because both internal mycorrhizal colonization and P inflow are unaffected.
7. Future research should concentrate on the potential for carbon flow to the soil via the external mycelial network.  相似文献

The effect of elevated [CO2] on wheat (Triticum aestivum L. Veery 10) productivity was examined by analysing radiation capture, canopy quantum yield, canopy carbon use efficiency, harvest index and daily C gain. Canopies were grown at either 330 or 1200 μ mol mol–1[CO2] in controlled environments, where root and shoot C fluxes were monitored continuously from emergence to harvest. A rapidly circulating hydroponic solution supplied nutrients, water and root zone oxygen. At harvest, dry mass predicted from gas exchange data was 102·8 ± 4·7% of the observed dry mass in six trials. Neither radiation capture efficiency nor carbon use efficiency were affected by elevated [CO2], but yield increased by 13% due to a sustained increase in canopy quantum yield. CO2 enrichment increased root mass, tiller number and seed mass. Harvest index and chlorophyll concentration were unchanged, but CO2 enrichment increased average life cycle net photosynthesis (13%, P < 0·05) and root respiration (24%, P < 0·05). These data indicate that plant communities adapt to CO2 enrichment through changes in C allocation. Elevated [CO2] increases sink strength in optimal environments, resulting in sustained increases in photosynthetic capacity, canopy quantum yield and daily C gain throughout the life cycle.  相似文献

Projections of future climate change include a strong likelihood of a doubling of current atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration ([ CO 2]) and possible shifts in precipitation patterns. Drought stress is a major environmental limitation for crop growth and yield and is common in rainfed rice production systems. This study was conducted to determine the growth and grain yield responses of rice to drought stress under [CO2] enrichment. Rice (cv. IR-72) was grown to maturity in eight naturally sunlit, plant growth chambers in atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations [CO2] of 350 and 700 μmol CO2 mol–1 air. In both [CO2], water management treatments included continuously flooded (CF) controls, flood water removed and drought stress imposed at panicle initiation (PI), anthesis (ANT), and both panicle initiation and anthesis (PI & ANT). The [CO2] enrichment increased growth, panicles plant–1 and grain yield. Drought accelerated leaf senescence, reduced leaf area and above-ground biomass and delayed crop ontogeny. The [CO2] enrichment allowed 1–2 days more growth during drought stress cycles. Grain yields of the PI and PI & ANT droughts were similar to the CF control treatments while the ANT drought treatment sharply reduced growth, grain yield and individual grain mass. We conclude that in the absence of air temperature increases, future global increases in [CO2] should promote rice growth and yield while providing a modest reduction of near 10% in water use and so increase drought avoidance.  相似文献

Pinus banksiana seedlings were grown for 9 months in enclosures in greenhouses at CO2 concentrations of 350 or 750 μmol mol−1 with either low (0.005 to 0. 3 W m−2) or high (0.25 to 0. 90 W m−2) ultraviolet-B (UV-B) irradiances. Total seedling dry weight decreased with high UV treatment but was unaffected by CO2 enrichment. High UV treatment also shifted biomass partitioning in favor of leaf production. Both CO2 and UV treatments decreased the dark respiration rate and light compensation point. High UV light inhibited photosynthesis at 350 but not at 750 μmol mol−1 CO2 due to a UV induced increase in ribulose-1, 5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase efficiency and ribulose-1, 5-bisphosphate regeneration. Stomatal density was increased by high UV irradiance but was unchanged by CO2 enrichment.  相似文献

Abstract. A controlled-environment chamber constructed from a standard chest freezer was used to grow and measure the CO2 exchange of small stands of lettuce ( Lactuca sativa L. ev. Ambassador). The chamber, with horizontal air flow, provided good control of air temperature ( c. 6 to 16°C), irradiance (0–300 μmol PAR m 2S1 and CO2 (350–1000 μmol mol−1). The photosynthetic response to changes in these variables was measured using an inexpensive CO2 dosing system which recorded the input rate required to maintain a constant concentration of CO2 (to ± 2.5%). Characteristis of the growth environment and the changes in response to temperature and irradiance are described.  相似文献

Ananas comosus L. (Merr.) (pineapple) was grown at three day/night temperatures and 350 (ambient) and 700 (elevated) μ mol mol–1 CO2 to examine the interactive effects of these factors on leaf gas exchange and stable carbon isotope discrimination ( Δ ,‰). All data were collected on the youngest mature leaf for 24 h every 6 weeks. CO2 uptake (mmol m–2 d–1) at ambient and elevated CO2, respectively, were 306 and 352 at 30/20 °C, 175 and 346 at 30/25 °C and 187 and 343 at 35/25 °C. CO2 enrichment enhanced CO2 uptake substantially in the day in all environments. Uptake at night at elevated CO2, relative to that at ambient CO2, was unchanged at 30/20 °C, but was 80% higher at 30/25 °C and 44% higher at 35/25 °C suggesting that phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase was not CO2-saturated at ambient CO2 levels and a 25 °C night temperature. Photosynthetic water use efficiency (WUE) was higher at elevated than at ambient CO2. Leaf Δ -values were higher at elevated than at ambient CO2 due to relatively higher assimilation in the light. Leaf Δ was significantly and linearly related to the fraction of total CO2 assimilated at night. The data suggest that a simultaneous increase in CO2 level and temperature associated with global warming would enhance carbon assimilation, increase WUE, and reduce the temperature dependence of CO2 uptake by A. comosus .  相似文献

Effects on sugar beet ( Beta vulgaris L.) of current and elevated CO2 and temperature alone and in combination and their interactions with abundant and deficient nitrogen supply (HN and LN, respectively) have been studied in three experiments in 1993, 1994 and 1995. Averaged over all experiments, elevated CO2 (600 μ mol mol–1 in 1993 and 700 μ mol mol–1 in 1994 and 1995) increased total dry mass at final harvest by 21% (95% confidence interval (CI) = 21, 22) and 11% (CI = 6, 15) and root dry mass by 26% (CI = 19, 32) and 12% (CI = 6, 18) for HN and LN plants, respectively. Warmer temperature decreased total dry mass by 11% (CI = – 15, – 7) and 9% (CI = – 15, – 5) and root dry mass by 7% (CI = – 12, – 2) and 7% (CI = – 10, 0) for HN and LN plants, respectively. There was no significant interaction between temperature and CO2 on total or root dry mass. Neither elevated CO2 nor temperature significantly affected sucrose concentration per unit root dry mass. Concentrations of glycinebetaine and of amino acids, measured as α -amino-N, decreased in elevated CO2 in both N applications; glycinebetaine by 13% (CI = – 21, – 5) and 16% (CI = – 24, – 8) and α -amino-N by 24% (CI = – 36, – 11) and 16% (CI = – 26, – 5) for HN and LN, respectively. Warmer temperature increased α -amino-N, by 76% (CI = 50, 107) for HN and 21% (CI = 7, 36) for LN plants, but not glycinebetaine.  相似文献

The responses of individual stomata to CO2 concentrations ranging from 0 to 900 μmol mol−1 air were analysed in Ipomoea pes-caprae L. Sweet (Convolvulaceae). The stomata were directly observed using a measurement system that permitted continuous observation of stomatal movement under controlled light and CO2 conditions. A CO2 concentration of 350 μmol mol−1 or higher induced stomatal closure, whereas concentrations below 350 μmol mol−1 did not. The time lag before stomatal closure decreased with increasing CO2 concentration, as did the steady-state aperture of the stomata after a change in CO2 concentration. However, the rate of stomatal closure increased with increasing CO2 concentration. Therefore, not only the stomatal closure rate but also the time from the CO2 concentration change to the beginning of stomatal closure changed with increasing CO2 concentration. These results suggest that atmospheric CO2 may be the stimulus for the closure of guard cells. No significant differences were observed between adaxial and abaxial stomata in terms of their responses to CO2. However, heterogeneous responses were detected between neighbouring stomata on each leaf surface.  相似文献

Two experiments are described in which plants of six species were grown for one full season in greenhouse compartments with 350 or 560 μ mol mol–1 CO2. In the first experiment two levels of nitrogen supply were applied to study the interaction between CO2 and nitrogen. In the second experiment two levels of water supply were added to the experimental set-up to investigate the three-way interaction between CO2, nitrogen and water. Biomass and biomass distribution were determined at harvests, while water use and soil moisture were monitored throughout the experiments. In both experiments a positive effect of CO2 on growth was found at high nitrogen concentrations but not at low nitrogen concentrations. However, plants used much less water in the presence of low nitrogen concentrations. Drought stress increased the relative effect of elevated CO2 on growth. Available soil moisture was used more slowly at high CO2 during drought or at high nitrogen concentrations, while at low nitrogen concentrations decreased water use resulted in an increase in soil moisture. The response to the treatments was similar in all the species used. Although potentially faster growing species appeared to respond better to high CO2 when supplied with a high level of nitrogen, inherently slow-growing species were more successful at low nitrogen concentrations.  相似文献

Soybean ( Glycine max cv. Clark) was grown at both ambient (ca 350 μmol mol−1) and elevated (ca 700 μmol mol−1) CO2 concentration at 5 growth temperatures (constant day/night temperatures of 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40°C) for 17–22 days after sowing to determine the interaction between temperature and CO2 concentration on photosynthesis (measured as A, the rate of CO2 assimilation per unit leaf area) at both the single leaf and whole plant level. Single leaves of soybean demonstrated increasingly greater stimulation of A at elevated CO2 as temperature increased from 25 to 35°C (i.e. optimal growth rates). At 40°C, primary leaves failed to develop and plants eventually died. In contrast, for both whole plant A and total biomass production, increasing temperature resulted in less stimulation by elevated CO2 concentration. For whole plants, increased CO2 stimulated leaf area more as growth temperature increased. Differences between the response of A to elevated CO2 for single leaves and whole plants may be related to increased self-shading experienced by whole plants at elevated CO2 as temperature increased. Results from the present study suggest that self-shading could limit the response of CO2 assimilation rate and the growth response of soybean plants if temperature and CO2 increase concurrently, and illustrate that light may be an important consideration in predicting the relative stimulation of photosynthesis by elevated CO2 at the whole plant level.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that acclimation of foliar dark respiration to CO2 concentration and temperature is associated with adjustments in leaf structure and chemistry. Populus tremuloides Michx. , Betula papyrifera Marsh. , Larix laricina (Du Roi) K. Koch , Pinus banksiana Lamb., and Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P. were grown from seed in combined CO2 (370 or 580 μ mol mol–1) and temperature treatments (18/12, 24/18, or 30/24 °C). Temperature and CO2 effects were predominately independent. Specific respiration rates partially acclimated to warmer thermal environments through downward adjustment in the intercept, but not Q 10 of the temperature–response functions. Temperature acclimation of respiration was larger for conifers than broad-leaved species and was associated with pronounced reductions in leaf nitrogen concentrations in conifers at higher growth temperatures. Short-term increases in CO2 concentration did not inhibit respiration. Growth in the elevated CO2 concentration reduced leaf nitrogen and increased non-structural carbohydrate concentrations. However, for a given nitrogen concentration, respiration was higher in leaves grown in the elevated CO2 concentration, as rates increased with increasing carbohydrates. Across species and treatments, respiration rates were a function of both leaf nitrogen and carbohydrate concentrations ( R 2 = 0·71, P < 0·0001). Long-term acclimation of foliar dark respiration to temperature and CO2 concentration is largely associated with changes in nitrogen and carbohydrate concentrations.  相似文献

The stomatal response to CO2 is linked to changes in guard cell zeaxanthin*   总被引:4,自引:2,他引:2
The mechanisms mediating CO2 sensing and light–CO2 interactions in guard cells are unknown. In growth chamber-grown Vicia faba leaves kept under constant light (500 μ mol m–2 s–1) and temperature, guard cell zeaxanthin content tracked ambient [CO2] and stomatal apertures. Increases in [CO2] from 400 to 1200 cm3 m–3 decreased zeaxanthin content from 180 to 80 mmol mol–1 Chl and decreased stomatal apertures by 7·0 μ m. Changes in zeaxanthin and aperture were reversed when [CO2] was lowered. Guard cell zeaxanthin content was linearly correlated with stomatal apertures. In the dark, the CO2-induced changes in stomatal aperture were much smaller, and guard cell zeaxanthin content did not change with chamber [CO2]. Guard cell zeaxanthin also tracked [CO2] and stomatal aperture in illuminated stomata from epidermal peels. Dithiothreitol (DTT), an inhibitor of zeaxanthin formation, eliminated CO2-induced zeaxanthin changes in guard cells from illuminated epidermal peels and reduced the stomatal CO2 response to the level observed in the dark. These data suggest that CO2-dependent changes in the zeaxanthin content of guard cells could modulate CO2-dependent changes of stomatal apertures in the light while a zeaxanthin-independent CO2 sensing mechanism would modulate the CO2 response in the dark.  相似文献

1. We tested the hypothesis that the net partitioning of dry mass and dry mass:area relationships is unaltered when plants are grown at elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations.
2. The total dry mass of Dactylis glomerata, Bellis perennis and Trifolium repens was higher for plants in 700 compared to 350 μmol CO2 mol–1 when grown hydroponically in controlled-environment cabinets.
3. Shoot:root ratios were higher and leaf area ratios and specific leaf areas lower in all species grown at elevated CO2. Leaf mass ratio was higher in plants of B. perennis and D. glomerata grown at elevated CO2.
4. Whilst these data suggest that CO2 alters the net partitioning of dry mass and dry mass:leaf area relationships, allometric comparisons of the components of dry mass and leaf area suggest at most a small effect of CO2. CO2 changed only two of a total of 12 allometric coefficients we calculated for the three species: ν relating shoot to root dry mass was higher in D. glomerata , whilst ν relating leaf area to total dry mass was lower in T. repens .
5. CO2 alone has very little effect on partitioning when the size of the plant is taken into account.  相似文献

Proliferating cultures of Actinidia deliciosa A. Chev., C. F. Liang and A. R. Ferguson cv. Tomuri (♂) were grown under photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) rates ranging from 30 to 250 μmol m−2 s−1 in order to determine certain physiological parameters in vitro: CO2 evolution, photosynthesis at three CO2 atmospheric concentrations (330, 1450 and 4500 μl l−1), fresh and dry matter accumulation and proliferation rate.
A proportional response in dry weight, dry/fresh weight ratios and PPFD was found. The proliferation rate increased up to 120 μmol m−2 s−1 but decreased at higher rates. At the highest PPFD, the CO2 released from cultures and accumulated in the vessels reached 200 μl l−1 of; at the lowest rate the CO2 concentration reached 10500 μl l−1 after 28 days of culture. The photosynthetic rate at 1450 and 4500 μl l−1 of CO2 was nearly 4 times higher than at the lowest concentration tested.  相似文献

Nitrogen nutrition of C3 plants at elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
The atmospheric CO2 concentration has risen from the preindustrial level of approximately 290 μl l−1 to more than 350 μl l−1 in 1993. The current rate of rise is such that concentrations of 420 μl l−1 are expected in the next 20 years. For C3 plants, higher CO2 levels favour the photosynthetic carbon reduction cycle over the photorespiratory cycle, resulting in higher rates of carbohydrate production and plant productivity. The change in balance between the two photosynthetic cycles appears to alter nitrogen and carbon metabolism in the leaf, possibly causing decreases in nitrogen concentrations in the leaf. This may result from increases in the concentration of storage carbohydrates of high molecular weight (soluble or insoluble) and/or changes in distribution of protein or other nitrogen containing compounds. Uptake of nitrogen may also be reduced at high CO2 due to lower transpiration rates. Decreases in foliar nitrogen levels have important implications for production of crops such as wheat, because fertilizer management is often based on leaf chemical analysis, using standards estimated when the CO2 levels were considerably lower. These standards will need to be re-evaluated as the CO2 concentration continues to rise. Lower levels of leaf nitrogen will also have implications for the quality of wheat grain produced, because it is likely that less nitrogen would be retranslocated during grain filling.  相似文献

Eragrostis pilosa (Linn.) P Beauv., a C4 grass native to east Africa, was grown at both ambient (350 μmol mol−1 and elevated (700 μmol mol−1) CO2 in either the presence or absence of the obligate, root hemi-parasite Striga hermonthica (Del.) Benth. Biomass of infected grasses was only 50% that of uninfected grasses at both CO2 concentrations, with stems and reproductive tissues of infected plants being most severely affected. By contrast, CO2 concentration had no effect on growth of E. pilosa , although rates of photosynthesis were enhanced by 30–40% at elevated CO2. Infection with S. hermonthica did not affect either rates of photosynthesis or leaf areas of E. pilosa , but did bring about an increase in root:shoot ratio, leaf nitrogen and phosphorus concentration and a decline in leaf starch concentration at both ambient and elevated CO2. Striga hermonthica had higher rates of photosynthesis and shoot concentrations of soluble sugars at elevated CO2, but there was no difference in biomass relative to ambient grown plants. Both infection and growth at elevated CO2 resulted in an increase in the Δ13C value of leaf tissue of E. pilosa , with the CO2 effect being greater. The proportion of host-derived carbon in parasite tissue, as determined from δ13C values, was 27% and 39% in ambient and elevated CO2 grown plants, respectively. In conclusion, infection with S. hermonthica limited growth of E. pilosa , and this limitation was not removed or alleviated by growing the association at elevated CO2.  相似文献
