Abstract Using collections from the years 1892–1999, I determined maximum standard length within each of 1030 populations of riffle-inhabiting darters ( Etheostoma spp.) representing five species from 788 sites in Illinois. Each site contained one to four riffle-inhabiting species of Etheostoma . Based on maximum-sized individuals in each collection, I calculated a ratio of standard lengths for all sympatric species pairs. Null models were developed using random pairings of body size measurements from sites with only one species of riffle Etheostoma to test whether body size ratios of sympatric species pairs are larger, indicating divergence, or smaller, indicating convergence, than ratios generated from allopatric populations. Results suggest that two of nine species pairs tend to converge in body size when sympatric. This suggests that convergence, in some cases, may facilitate the persistence of similar species in diverse communities. When variation in sympatric congener number is accounted for, the E. caeruleum : E. spectabile interaction results in significantly increasing size ratios as congener number increases. Etheostoma caeruleum and E. spectabile are the most ecologically similar and evolutionarily closely related species in the dataset. The divergence within this pair, associated with sympatric congener number, suggests that the degree of divergent character displacement may be indirectly enhanced by community structure.  相似文献

Sexual selection can facilitate divergent evolution of traits related to mating and consequently promote speciation. Theoretically, independent operation of sexual selection in different populations can lead to divergence of sexual traits among populations and result in allopatric speciation. Here, we show that divergent evolution in sexual morphology affecting mating compatibility (body size and genital morphologies) and speciation have occurred in a lineage of millipedes, the Parafontaria tonominea species complex. In this millipede group, male and female body and genital sizes exhibit marked, correlated divergence among populations, and the diverged morphologies result in mechanical reproductive isolation between sympatric species. The morphological divergence occurred among populations independently and without any correlation with climatic variables, although matching between sexes has been maintained, suggesting that morphological divergence was not a by-product of climatic adaptation. The diverged populations underwent restricted dispersal and secondary contact without hybridization. The extent of morphological difference between sympatric species is variable, as is diversity among allopatric populations; consequently, the species complex appears to contain many species. This millipede case suggests that sexual selection does contribute to species richness via morphological diversification when a lineage of organisms consists of highly divided populations owing to limited dispersal.  相似文献

The threespine stickleback ( Gasterosteus aculeatus ) species complex is well suited for identifying the types of phenotypic divergence and isolating barriers that contribute to reproductive isolation at early stages of speciation. In the present study, we characterize the patterns of genetic and phenotypic divergence as well as the types of isolating barriers that are present between two sympatric pairs of threespine sticklebacks in Hokkaido, Japan. One sympatric pair consists of an anadromous and a resident freshwater form and shows divergence in body size between the forms, despite the lack of genetic differentiation between them. The second sympatric pair consists of two anadromous forms, which originated before the last glacial period and are currently reproductively isolated. These two anadromous forms have diverged in many morphological traits as well as in their reproductive behaviours. Both sexual isolation and hybrid male sterility contribute to reproductive isolation between the anadromous species pair. We discuss the shared and unique aspects of phenotypic divergence and reproductive isolation in the Japanese sympatric pairs compared with postglacial stickleback species pairs. Further studies of these divergent species pairs will provide a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of speciation in sticklebacks.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 91 , 671–685.  相似文献

The shapes and lengths of copulatory pieces and vaginal appendices of the carabid beetle subgenus Ohomopterus (genus Carabus) vary among species. In Japan, the species in the group with a medium body size (C. yaconinus, C. iwawakianus, C. maiyasanus, C. uenoi, C. arrowianus, C. esakii, and C. insulicola) are usually allopatric or parapatric, except at Mt Kongosan, where C. uenoi, C. iwawakianus, and C. yaconinus are sympatrically distributed. The degree of premating isolation by mate preference was high between sympatric populations, irrespective of the genetic distance between them. However, premating isolation was absent between parapatric populations. The degree of premating isolation for allopatric populations spanned a wide range of isolation values. Thus, mate discrimination by males seems to have evolved mostly between sympatric pairs. These results suggest two hypotheses. First, premating isolation has evolved through reinforcement or through reproductive character displacement after sympatric contact. Second, premating isolation has evolved in allopatry, and as a result of premating isolation, the species can coexist in sympatry. We also examined the degree of mechanical isolation between C. uenoi and C. iwawakianus (a sympatric pair), which have a very large difference in the length of the copulatory piece. The insertion success was low and only one female produced viable offspring among 15 crosses; however, death in females due to copulation was rare. For sympatric matings between C. uenoi and C. iwawakianus, a large difference in the genital size might reduce the gene flow with small mating costs. Gene flow that was significantly reduced by genital difference might cause either the evolution of premating isolation through reinforcement/reproductive character displacement or through the maintenance of a high degree of premating isolation following sympatric contact. © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2006, 87 , 145–154.  相似文献

Genital morphology in animals with internal fertilization is considered to be among the fastest evolving traits. Sexual selection is often proposed as the main driver of genital diversification but the exact selection mechanisms involved are usually unclear. In addition, the mechanisms operating may differ even between pairs of sibling species. We investigated patterns of male genital variation within and between natural populations of the cactophilic fly Drosophila koepferae ranging its entire geographic distribution and compared them with those previously observed in its sibling species, D. buzzatii. Using both mtDNA and nDNA markers we found that genital shape variation in D. koepferae is more restricted than expected for neutral evolution, suggesting the predominance of stabilizing selection. We also detected dissimilar patterns of divergence between populations of D. koepferae that were allopatric and sympatric with D. buzzatii. The constrained evolution inferred for D. koepferae’s genitalia clearly contrasts with the rapid divergence and higher morphological disparity observed in the populations of D. buzzatii. Finally, different possible scenarios of male genital evolution in each species and within the radiation of D. buzzatii cluster are discussed.  相似文献

Increasing evidence from multiple animal systems suggests that genital evolution and diversification are driven by rapid and strong evolutionary forces. Particularly, the morphology of male genital structures is considered to be among the fastest evolving traits in animal groups with internal fertilization. In this study, we investigated patterns of male genital variation within and between natural populations of the cactophilic fly Drosophila buzzatii in its original geographic distribution range in the Neotropics. We detected significant morphological differences among populations and distinguished five differentiated groups. Moreover, among population differentiation in genital morphology was associated with the degree of geographic isolation among populations and clearly contrasted with the general homogeneity detected for the putatively neutral mitochondrial gene COI. Integrating our present data with previous molecular population genetic surveys, our results suggest that male genital morphology has rapidly diverged after the recent demographic expansion that D. buzzatii has undergone in the arid zones of South America. Because the “lock and key” hypothesis failed to explain the present pattern, we explored alternative explanations for the observed pattern of genital diversification including drift-facilitated sexual selection.  相似文献

To reveal the role of diverged body size and genital morphology in reproductive isolation among closely related species, we examined patterns of, and factors limiting, introgressive hybridization between sympatric Ohomopterus ground beetles in central Japan using mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase subunit 5 (ND5) gene sequences. We sampled 17 local assemblages that consisted of two to five species and estimated levels of interspecific gene flow using the genetic distance, D(A), and maximum-likelihood estimates of gene flow. Sharing of haplotypes or haplotype lineages was detected between six of seven species that occurred in the study areas, indicating mitochondrial introgression. The intensity and direction of mitochondrial gene flow were variable among species pairs. To determine the factors affecting introgression patterns, we tested the relationships between interspecific D(A) and five independent variables: difference in body size, difference in genital size, phylogenetic relatedness (nuclear gene sequence divergence), habitat difference, and species richness of the assemblage. Body and genital size differences contributed significantly to preventing gene flow. Thus, mechanical isolation mechanisms reduce the chance of introgressive hybridization between closely related species. Our results highlight the role of morphological divergence in speciation and assemblage formation processes through mechanical isolation.  相似文献

In viviparous organisms, pregnant females typically experience an increase in body mass and body volume. In this study, the prediction that variation in reproductive traits among populations of viviparous organisms should be related to variation among populations in body shape was tested in the Pacific molly Poecilia butleri, a viviparous fish that inhabits western Mexico and northern Central America. Variation among 10 populations in four reproductive traits was examined: brood size, individual embryo mass, total reproductive allotment and degree of maternal provisioning of nutrients to developing embryos. Variation among these populations in body shape was also examined. Significant variation among populations was observed in both brood size and reproductive allotment but not in embryo mass or degree of maternal provisioning. Significant variation among populations was also observed in body shape. After correcting for female size, however, reproductive traits and body shape were not associated among populations. This suggests that selective pressures acting on reproduction do not necessarily affect morphology and vice versa. Several factors might contribute to this unexpected lack of association between reproductive traits and morphology.

To examine models of evolution for Coregonus from the Central Alpine region of Europe, 20 populations from nine lakes were assessed for variation at six microsatellite DNA loci. Patterns of variation were tested against three evolutionary models: phenotypic plasticity, multiple invasions of lakes by divergent forms, and within-lake radiation of species flocks. All sympatric and all but one allopatric pairs of populations were significantly divergent in allele frequencies. Pairwise F -statistics indicated reduced gene flow among phenotypically divergent sympatric populations. These results reject the hypothesis that within-lake morphological and ecological diversity reflects phenotypic plasticity within a single gene pool. Genetic similarity was higher among forms within lakes than between populations of the same form in different lakes. Among-lake divergence was primarily a product of allele size differences. Mantel tests contrasting patterns of genetic divergence against patterns predicted from the multiple invasions and species flocks models indicated that the latter is the best explanation of the observed genetic variation. Thus, reproductively isolated species diverged within lakes, with similar patterns repeatedly emerging among lakes. While this study argues for a particular mode of evolution in Central Alpine Coregonus , the taxonomy of these forms remains unresolved.  相似文献

Amongst several theories of speciation, sympatric speciation has been the most controversial but it is now widely accepted that populations can become reproductively isolated without being separated geographically. One problem with the acceptance of the theory of sympatric speciation, however, has been the lack of supporting empirical data and it is still believed that geographical isolation is responsible for the majority of speciation events. Here the example of species pairs in lampreys suggests that sympatric speciation in a whole taxonomic group could occur throughout its worldwide range. Lampreys occur in two ecologically distinct forms: parasitic mostly anadromous species that forage on tissue and body fluids of host fishes, and non‐parasitic forms that, apart from a short adult life when they cease feeding, spend their entire life as filter feeders in the substratum of stream beds. Both forms occur in sympatric species pairs throughout the range of lampreys that occur in Eurasia, North America and Australia and it is widely acknowledged that non‐parasitic forms derive from parasitic forms. The larvae of both forms can be distinguished by their potential fecundity and therefore, it is argued that the mode of life is not a consequence of different ecological conditions. Furthermore, as lampreys prefer to choose mates of similar sizes and fertilization success decreases with increasing difference in body size, there is a strong disruptive selection between the two forms and they are therefore reproductively isolated. Besides theoretical aspects, the similarity of the species pairs, together with their occurrence in sympatry, the occurrence of forms with intermediate characteristics, and examples where speciation might be in progress, hints at the possibility that speciation also occurred in sympatry. The difference between lampreys and other examples of sympatric speciation is that there seems to be a trend towards sympatric speciation events throughout the worldwide range of lampreys which is neither restricted to relatively small localities nor caused by human disturbance. Species pairs in lampreys therefore offer a unique possibility of studying the process of sympatric speciation on a large scale.  相似文献

In the paper, restriction-fragment length polymorphisms in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) were studied to test the hypothesis that sympatric populations of lake whitefish in the Allegash basin have recently diverged through sympatric speciation. Thirteen restriction enzymes were used to analyze mtDNA of 156 specimens representing 13 populations from eastern Canada and northern Maine where normal and dwarf phenotypes of whitefish exist in sympatry and allopatry. Two monophyletic assemblages of populations that exhibit different geographic distributions were identified. One showed an eastern distribution that expands from Cape Breton to the Allegash basin and the other exhibits a more western distribution. The Allegash basin was the only area of overlap. The western assemblage exhibited the normal size phenotype in all cases, whereas the eastern assemblage exhibited the normal size phenotype in allopatric conditions and the dwarf size phenotype in sympatry. The existence of sympatric pairs in the Allegash basin result from the secondary contact of two monophyletic groups of whitefish that evolved allopatrically in separate refugia during the last glaciation events. The weak mtDNA difference of sympatric pairs suggests that speciation of lake whitefish in eastern North America was accompanied by only minor alterations of the ancestral gene pool.  相似文献

Body size varies considerably among species and among populations within species, exhibiting many repeatable patterns. However, which sources of selection generate geographic patterns, and which components of fitness mediate evolution of body size, are not well understood. For many animals, resource quality and intraspecific competition may mediate selection on body size producing large-scale geographic patterns. In two sequential experiments, we examine how variation in larval competition and resource quality (seed size) affects the fitness consequences of variation in body size in a scramble-competing seed-feeding beetle, Stator limbatus. Specifically, we compared fitness components among three natural populations of S. limbatus that vary in body size, and then among three lineages of beetles derived from a single base population artificially selected to vary in size, all reared on three sizes of seeds at variable larval density. The effects of larval competition and seed size on larval survival and development time were similar for larger versus smaller beetles. However, larger-bodied beetles suffered a greater reduction in adult body mass with decreasing seed size and increasing larval density; the relative advantage of being large decreased with decreasing seed size and increasing larval density. There were highly significant interactions between the effects of seed size and larval density on body size, and a significant three-way interaction (population-by-density-by-seed size), indicating that environmental effects on the fitness consequences of being large are nonadditive. Our study demonstrates how multiple ecological variables (resource availability and resource competition) interact to affect organismal fitness components, and that such interactions can mediate natural selection on body size. Studying individual factors influencing selection on body size may lead to misleading results given the potential for nonlinear interactions among selective agents.  相似文献

Characterizing the patterns of hybridization between closely related species is crucial to understand the role of gene flow in speciation. In particular, systems comprising multiple contacts between sister species offer an outstanding opportunity to investigate how reproductive isolation varies with environmental conditions, demography and geographic contexts of divergence. The flat periwinkles, Littorina obtusata and L. fabalis (Gastropoda), are two intertidal sister species with marked ecological differences compatible with late stages of speciation. Although hybridization between the two was previously suggested, its extent across the Atlantic shores of Europe remained largely unknown. Here, we combined genetic (microsatellites and mtDNA) and morphological data (shell and male genital morphology) from multiple populations of flat periwinkles in north‐western Iberia to assess the extent of current and past hybridization between L. obtusata and L. fabalis under two contrasting geographic settings of divergence (sympatry and allopatry). Hybridization signatures based on both mtDNA and microsatellites were stronger in sympatric sites, although evidence for recent extensive admixture was found in a single location. Misidentification of individuals into species based on shell morphology was higher in sympatric than in allopatric sites. However, despite hybridization, species distinctiveness based on this phenotypic trait together with male genital morphology remained relatively high. The observed variation in the extent of hybridization among locations provides a rare opportunity for future studies on the consequences of different levels of gene flow for reinforcement, thus informing about the mechanisms underlying the completion of speciation.  相似文献

Geographic variation in morphological traits is widespread and important to our current understanding of evolutionary processes. Although male genitalia are perhaps the most divergent morphological traits in animals, geographic variation in genital traits has received little attention and the mechanism driving such variation is unclear. The species isolation hypothesis of genital evolution makes explicit predictions about geographic variation in genitalia predicting patterns of genital divergence that reflect the risk of mating with related but incompatible species. The sexual selection and pleiotropy hypotheses, however, predict general levels of geographic variation that reflect divergent sexual selection pressures or genetic drift. To test these predictions, we investigated geographic variation in genital morphology in the praying mantid genus Ciulfina (Mantodea: Liturgusidae) using elliptic Fourier analysis. We found significant levels of geographic variation in the genital morphology of four Ciulfina species irrespective of the relative proximity of different populations to contact zones with other species. These results reject the species isolation hypothesis, and instead support either the sexual selection or pleiotropy hypotheses to explain patterns of genital evolution in this genus.  相似文献

Crucian carp Carassius carassius was sampled during 1993 and 1994 in 21 lakes and ponds in east Norway In 10 of these lakes and ponds no piscivorous fish species was present, and in the remaining 11 lakes and ponds predators such as perch Perca fluvtalilis. pike Esox lucius, and trout Salmo trutta were common In general, crucian carp was larger in the lakes with predators than in those without predators The relative body depth (body height/body length) of crucian carp was significantly deeper in populations sympatric with predators (mean 0 358), compared to allopatric populations (mean 0 286) The variation in relative body depth was larger among the sympatric populations than among the allopatric populations The observed difference in relative body depth may be due to 1) predator induced changes m body morphology, 2) increased growth rates in lakes containing predator due to reduced intraspecific competition, and 3) size-selective predation  相似文献

Sexual size dimorphism (SSD), a difference in body size between the sexes, occurs in many animal species. Although the larger sex is often considered invariable within species, patterns of selection may result in interpopulation variation or even reversal of SSD. We evaluated correlations between latitude and female body size, male body size, and relative body size (male body size/female body size) in 22 populations (ranging from 37 degrees N to 49 degrees N) of sea-run masu salmon (Oncorhynchus masou) that spawn in rivers along the Sea of Japan coast. Male size and the relative body size increased with latitude, but female size did not correlate with latitude. In addition, increase in male size with latitude was sufficient to result in a reversal of SSD, the switch-point being around 45 degrees N. We suggest that the positive correlation between latitude and male size is due to increasing operational sex ratios or sexual selection on sea-run male body size that result from sex-biased patterns of anadromy. In conclusion, our study provides the first example of predictable geographic variation in SSD shaped by apparent patterns of sexual selection.  相似文献

Variation in body size, growth and life history traits of ectotherms along latitudinal and altitudinal clines is generally assumed to represent adaptation to local environmental conditions, especially adaptation to temperature. However, the degree to which variation along these clines is due to adaptation vs plasticity remains poorly understood. In addition, geographic patterns often differ between females and males – e.g. sexual dimorphism varies along latitudinal clines, but the extent to which these sex differences are due to genetic differences between sexes vs sex differences in plasticity is poorly understood. We use common garden experiments (beetles reared at 24, 30 and 36°C) to quantify the relative contribution of genetically‐based differentiation among populations vs phenotypic plasticity to variation in body size and other traits among six populations of the seed‐feeding beetle Stator limbatus collected from various altitudes in Arizona, USA. We found that temperature induces substantial plasticity in survivorship, body size and female lifetime fecundity, indicating that developmental temperature significantly affects growth and life history traits of S. limbatus. We also detected genetic differences among populations for body size and fecundity, and genetic differences among populations in thermal reaction norms, but the altitude of origin (and hence mean temperature) does not appear to explain these genetic differences. This and other recent studies suggest that temperature is not the major environmental factor that generates geographic variation in traits of this species. In addition, though there was no overall difference in plasticity of body size between males and females (when averaged across populations), we did find that the degree to which dimorphism changed with temperature varied among populations. Consequently, future studies should be extremely cautious when using only a few study populations to examine environmental effects on sexual dimorphism.  相似文献

Genes underlying repeated adaptive evolution in natural populations are still largely unknown. Stickleback fish (Gasterosteus aculeatus) have undergone a recent dramatic evolutionary radiation, generating numerous examples of marine-freshwater species pairs and a small number of benthic-limnetic species pairs found within single lakes [1]. We have developed a new genome-wide SNP genotyping array to study patterns of genetic variation in sticklebacks over a wide geographic range, and to scan the genome for regions that contribute to repeated evolution of marine-freshwater or benthic-limnetic species pairs. Surveying 34 global populations with 1,159 informative markers revealed substantial genetic variation, with predominant patterns reflecting demographic history and geographic structure. After correcting for geographic structure and filtering for neutral markers, we detected large repeated shifts in allele frequency at some loci, identifying both known and novel loci likely contributing to marine-freshwater and benthic-limnetic divergence. Several novel loci fall close to genes implicated in epithelial barrier or immune functions, which have likely changed as sticklebacks adapt to contrasting environments. Specific alleles differentiating sympatric benthic-limnetic species pairs are shared in nearby solitary populations, suggesting an allopatric origin for adaptive variants and selection pressures unrelated to sympatry in the initial formation of these classic vertebrate species pairs.  相似文献
