In this paper we present the effects of different tracemakers on the redistribution of calcareous nannofossils throughout the K-Pg boundary at the Bidart section (SW France), along with their consequences for our knowledge of the K-Pg boundary event. Danian calcareous nannofossil assemblages are present in Maastrichtian samples due to infiltration into dark trace fossil infillings proceeding from the earliest Paleogene. This is evidenced by the appearance of abundant paleogene calcareous nannofossils just below the K-Pg boundary, showing the relevance of the trace fossil infillings in the context of the K-Pg boundary event.  相似文献

K?dzierski, M., Rodríguez‐Tovar, F.J. & Uchman, A. 2011: Vertical displacement and taphonomic filtering of nannofossils by bioturbation in the Cretaceous–Palaeogene boundary section at Caravaca, SE Spain. Lethaia, Vol. 44, pp. 321–328. At the Caravaca section, SE Spain, the position of the Cretaceous–Palaeogene (K–Pg) boundary is well‐defined, with multidisciplinary datasets from a thin rusty layer at the base of the 10 cm dark boundary layer. Nannoplankton assemblages containing the Danian taxon Neochiastozygus sp. and enriched in Thoracosphaera spp. are displaced below the K–Pg boundary into the trace fossils Zoophycos, Thalassinoides and Chondrites. These trace fossils are filled with dark‐coloured sediments of the dark boundary layer. The nannofossil assemblage from the 1‐cm thick interval below the boundary, enriched in Thoracosphaera spp. and Braarudosphaera spp., may have been displaced by Chondrites tracemakers, the traces of which are abundant in this interval. The downward transport of the Danian nannofossils into the Maastrichtian by the tracemakers seems to be one of the common mechanisms responsible for their apparent appearance below the K–Pg boundary. The dark boundary layer contains very rare Danian specimens and abundant Maastrichtian nannofossils. The Maastrichtian taxa were most likely conveyed up on to the seafloor by tracemakers during the Danian. The redistribution of nannoplankton down and up across the rusty layer (K–Pg), challenges the usefulness of nannofossils for high‐resolution stratigraphy of the K–Pg boundary. □Nannoplankton, Cretaceous–Palaeogene boundary event, biogenic mixing, trace fossils.  相似文献

Detailed field observations across and along the Cretaceous-Palaeogene (K-Pg) boundary interval in the Caravaca section, SE Spain, together with laboratory analyses reveal a well-developed lowermost Danian dark-colored trace fossil assemblage. The trace fossils range continuously from the bioturbated horizons in the dark boundary layer (lowermost Danian), to the uppermost Maastrichtian sediments. The rusty boundary layer at the base of the dark boundary layer, usually related to the K-Pg boundary impact, is traditionally considered as undisturbed. However, ichnological analysis at the Caravaca section shows that this rusty boundary layer is cross-cut vertically by Zoophycos and Chondrites, but also penetrated laterally by Chondrites, revealing an important colonization of the substrate. Stereomicroscope analysis shows sharp burrow margins of dark-colored Chondrites directly against the surrounding red sediment of the rusty layer. Colonization of unfavorable substrates by Zoophycos and Chondrites tracemakers, as that represented by the rusty boundary layer, was possible because of constructing of open, probably of actively ventilated burrows that facilitate colonization of sediments poor in oxygen and food. Significant bioturbational disturbance of the rusty layer can cause vertical and horizontal redistribution of the components related to the K-Pg boundary impact and, in consequence, to induce erroneous interpretations. A detailed ichnological analysis of the K-Pg boundary interval, with special attention to the rusty layer, reveals an essential tool to avoid misinterpretations.  相似文献

The calcareous nannofossils in Late Quaternary Caribbean core P6304-4 are examined with respect to their stable isotope composition, biostratigraphy, and taxonomy. Using relations between the various nannofossil taxa and oxygen isotopic stages, a number of correlations are identified that indicate the value of nannofossils in Quaternary isotope stratigraphy. Three globally-synchronous datums previously identified are substantiated for the Caribbean. Variations in abundances of the most common species of nannofossils are not affected by glacial-interglacial changes and thus do not contribute to fluctuations seen in the oxygen isotopic record. However, nannofossil assemblages were more diverse during glacial stages. The carbon isotopic record of nannofossils remains enigmatic. Eventually it may be possible to recognize the various isotopic stages of the Quaternary based solely on the characteristics of the nannofossil assemblage.  相似文献

Qualitative and quantitative analyses of planktonic foraminifera (completed by calcareous nannofossils in some localities) from 8 sections and boreholes located in 7 Neogene basins of the South Rifian Corridor (Morocco) enable us to identify 16 bioevents calibrated with the geomagnetic polarity time scale. These events are useful for (1) assigning the sediments to the Tortonian (bioevents 1 to 7), the Messinian (bioevents 9 to 14, the event 8 indicates the Tortonian/Messinian boundary), the Early Pliocene (bioevent 15) and the Middle Pliocene (bioevent 16), (2) establishing high resolution correlations between the sections and boreholes studied herein, (3) locating the South Rifian Corridor sections and boreholes within the framework of biostratigraphic events recognized during the latest ten years in time-equivalent Atlantic and Mediterranean sequences, and (4) estimating the variation of sedimentation rates in the studied basins. With respect to Morocco, previous detailed studies concerned only the Rabat area (Bou Regreg valley) and Guercif basin. Our results extend correlations to the other basins of the South Rifian Corridor, a key area to understand connections between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea at the end of the Miocene.  相似文献

Middle to late Miocene calcareous nannofossil data of ODP Site 1085 from the eastern South Atlantic off Namibia were analysed to document spatial and temporal changes in surface-ocean circulation, upwelling initiation, and associated productivity.

Our data show that calcareous nannofossils constitute a significant part of the carbonate fraction throughout the investigated interval from 12.5 to 7.7 million years (Ma). Highest numbers of calcareous nannofossils (up to 38,000 × 106 nannofossils g− 1 sediment) were observed during the intervals 9.9 to 9.7 and 8.7 to 8.0 Ma. These elevated numbers of calcareous nannofossils may generally be linked to the initiation of upwelling at about 10 Ma in the studied region. In contrast, diminished numbers of calcareous nannoplankton, as in the interval 9.6 to 9.0 Ma, probably characterise time intervals of weaker productivity resulting in a decrease of nannofossil carbonate contents in the sediments of Site 1085. This decrease in nannofossil production could be one possible explanation for the major CaCO3 depression in between 9.6 and 9.0 Ma. Coccoliths of the genus Reticulofenestra are the most abundant taxa. Their occurrences are characterised by changes in the investigated time interval. In addition, Coccolithus pelagicus, Calcidiscus leptoporus and Umbilicosphaera spp. contribute a common part of the assemblage. Calcareous nannofossils account for more than half of the carbonate, with peak contribution up to 80% at 8.8 Ma.  相似文献

The oxygen- and carbon-isotope compositions of planktic and benthic foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils from Middle Oligocene-Early Miocene Equatorial Atlantic sediments (DSDP Site 354) indicate two important paleoceanographic changes, in the Late Oligocene (foraminiferal Zone P.21) and in the Early Miocene (foraminiferal Zone N.5). The first change, reflected by a δ18O increase of 1.45‰ inGlobigerina venezuelana, affected only intermediate pelagic and not surface, deep or bottom waters. The second change affected surface and intermediate waters, whereas deep and bottom waters showed only minor fluctuations. In the case of the former the isotope effect of the moderate ice accumulation on the Antarctic continent is amplified in the Equatorial Atlantic by changes in the circulation pattern. The latter paleoceanographic change, reflected by a significant increase in18O in both planktic and benthic forms (about 1.0‰ and 0.5‰, respectively), may have been caused by ice volume increase and temperature decrease. Both oxygen- and carbon-isotope compositions indicate a marked depth-habitat stratification for planktic foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils. Three different dwelling groups are recognized: shallowGlobigerinoides, Globoquadrina dehiscens, Globorotalia mayeri and nannofossils; intermediateGlobigerina venezuelana; and deepCatapsydrax dissimilis. The comparison of foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils suggests that the isotopic compositions of nannofossils are generally controlled by the same parameters which control the isotopic composition of shallow-dwelling foraminifera, but the former are more enriched in18O.  相似文献

A high-resolution biostratigraphic analysis of planktic foraminifers confirms that the Bidart section at the eastern margin of the Atlantic Ocean exhibits a continuous and complete Cretaceous/Paleogene (K/Pg) transition interval. The biozones and subzones recorded in this section are less expanded than their equivalent in Tunisian sections: El Kef (Global Stratotype Section and Point: GSSP for the K/Pg boundary) and Ellès (auxiliary section), but they are sufficiently thick to allow a detailed analysis of the evolution of the planktic foraminiferal assemblages across the K/Pg transition.Throughout the uppermost 4 m Maastrichtian, the planktic foraminiferal assemblages are highly diversified, containing up to 72 species. These Maastrichtian assemblages are rich in cosmopolitan taxa (70%), dominated by small biserial morphotypes which belong mainly to the genus Heterohelix which coexist with less abundant but highly diverse tropical and subtropical species. The extinction pattern at the Bidart section suggests a sudden catastrophic mass extinction at the K/Pg boundary which affected at least 53 out of 72 species. The species becoming extinct include globotruncanids (e.g. Contusotruncana spp., Globotruncana spp., Globotruncanita spp.) and complex heterohelicids (e.g. Racemiguembelina spp., Pseudotextularia spp., Gublerina spp.). At the Bidart section, only Archaeoglobigerina cretacea disappears 2 m below the K/Pg boundary event. Specimens of 18 small and even tiny Maastrichtian species, are found at the lowermost Danian. Only a few of these species belonging to the genera of Guembelitria, Hedbergella and Heterohelix are considered to be real “Cretaceous survivor species”, whereas the specimens belonging to the rest, are most probably reworked, because they differ in their preservation.Throughout lowermost Danian, the planktic foraminiferal assemblages are dominated by “opportunistic” species of the genus Guembelitria. These opportunists are associated to small and poorly diversified pioneer globigerinids (Palaeoglobigerina spp. and Parvularugoglobigerina spp.). These assemblages became progressively more diversified across the early Danian containing species with cancellate walls (Eoglobigerina spp., Parasubbotina spp., Subbotina triloculinoides and Praemurica spp.) and new taxa of biserial heterohelicids (Woodringina spp. and Chiloguembelina spp.) suggesting a paleoenvironmental recovery.  相似文献

A detailed study of the calcareous nannofossil assemblages of latest Danian to early Selandian age from Wadi Qena (the Qreiya-1, Qreiya-2, and Araas sections) in the central Eastern Desert and the Gebel Duwi section at the Red Sea Coast has been carried out to understand the local phytoplankton paleocommunities. For the first time in Egypt four calcareous nannofossil zones (NTp6, NTp7, NTp8, NTp9) and five subzones (NTp7A, NTp7B, NTp8A, NTp8B and NTp8C) were distinguished subdividing the standard NP4 and NP5 zones. The calcareous nannofossil zones were correlated with nannofossil zonations from the Tethyan region (e.g. Tunisia and the Zumaia section, the GSSP for the Danian/Selandian boundary). The calcareous nannofossil assemblages are moderately to well preserved. The event beds are characterized by a dark-brown shaley-marl bed rich in organic carbon and coprolites. Three main assemblages are distinguished: a pre-event assemblage, a transitional assemblage and a post-event assemblage. The paleoenvironments vary from cool eutrophic water below and above the event to warm oligotrophic conditions during the event. The result of this study concludes that the “Latest Danian Event” (LDE) may represent an early Paleocene hyperthermal.  相似文献

Quantitative analysis of 67 calcareous nannofossil assemblages from surface sediments recovered in a wide area across the Sicily Channel has been carried out in order to improve the interpretation of palaeontological data based on this planktonic group in a key area for Mediterranean palaeoceanographic studies. The investigation focused on three case studies that demonstrate the high potentiality of such a combined approach, taking into account the recent distribution of taxa or groups of taxa on the sea floor and the palaeontological record. The distribution of reworked specimens over the northern Sicily Channel sea floor validates the role of southern Sicily as a source region for reworked nannofossils and the role of rivers as their carrier. Eustatic sea-level fluctuations can be considered to be the main factor that influenced the abundance variations in sedimentary sequences of this area. The distribution of Florisphaera profunda can be explained in terms of topography (positive correlation) and mesoscale oceanographic circulation. In particular, its significant anti-correlation to the amount of chlorophyll-A deduced by satellite imagery validates the use of this species as a proxy for palaeoproductivity reconstructions. Finally, high abundance values of G. oceanica are confined to the westernmost part of the Sicily Channel, coinciding with a water mass salinity minimum. In particular, abundances of up to about 10% were observed in the westernmost part of the African Margin, suggesting the importance of the Atlantic Tunisian Current, whose activity is more pronounced in winter. The comparison of data of this species between 135 and 110 kyr BP, inside and outside the Channel, led us to deduce that the physical transport in almost unmodified waters of Atlantic origin might be the most important factor for its significant occurrence.  相似文献

It has been clearly demonstrated that past climate fluctuations are recorded in marine sedimentary rocks. However, for many reasons, extracting the climate signature is difficult. Initial low-field mass-specific magnetic susceptibility (MS) data can potentially provide a measure of climate variability and thus become a proxy characterizing climate cyclicity in a wide range of marine sediments. This is due to the fact that climate change (warm, wet versus cold, dry) drives cyclic weathering and erosional variations that are recorded as the detrital components of marine sediment that dominates the MS. To test the utility of MS to yield climate proxies in marine sediments showing major changes in lithology, we have sampled the well-studied Danian/Selandian boundary interval (Lower Paleocene) at Zumaia (Zumaya), Spain. This interval represents a dramatic, rapid lithologic change from Danian carbonate-dominated limestone–marl couplets to a detrital-dominated marl-shale sequence in the Selandian, indicating onset of a major regression-erosional event beginning in the lowest Selandian. Sampling included a continuous sequence from the uppermost Danian Stage (3.71 m) into the lowermost Selandian Stage (5.2 m), a suite of 175 samples collected at 5 cm intervals. Our results indicate that MS measurements reflect changes in detrital sediment at the site, first by closely tracking high-frequency limestone–marl couplets, second with a large, rapid shift toward higher MS values beginning at the Danian/Selandian boundary resulting from a major regression, and third by tracking low-frequency climate-controlled variations known to have occurred during deposition of these sediments. MS zones developed from the cyclicity observed throughout the sequence, supported by time series analysis using Fourier Transform (FT) methods applied to the MS results, exhibit Milankovitch cyclicities in the precessional (19–24 kyr), obliquity (41–54 kyr) and eccentricity bands (100 kyr). This is in excellent agreement with previous FT work on the section using measured variations in cyclic bed thicknesses. With the new MS data set and FT results, we then developed a Floating Point Time Scale (FPTS) for the sequence sampled (covering  550 kyr through the Danian/Selandian boundary interval), yielding a time-scale resolution for the uppermost Danian to  10,000 years. However, only the  100,000 year eccentricity band for the Selandian is sufficiently well developed for an FPTS estimate, and yields a time-scale resolution of  50,000 years. Our test of the utility of MS data sets in this varying depositional setting demonstrated that these data can provide a climate proxy that is not disrupted by large lithologic changes.  相似文献

During Ocean Drilling Program Leg 207 at Demerara Rise (western tropical Atlantic) expanded sections of organic-rich laminated shales of late Cretaceous age, including the Cenomanian/Turonian boundary interval (CTBI) were recovered. These sediments yield rich assemblages of calcareous nannofossils, offering a unique possibility to calibrate the stable carbon isotope curve (δ13Corg). The calcareous nannofossils of Sites 1258, 1259, 1260 and 1261 have been investigated in order to gain a detailed biostratigraphic framework for the CTBI in the tropical latitudes. The bioevents observed have been correlated with the characteristic δ13Corg excursion of the CTBI. The events occurring during the excursion, and slightly below and above it, include the first occurrences of the calcareous nannofossil species Cylindralithus biarcus, Quadrum gartneri, Quadrum intermedium, Eprolithus octopetalus, Eprolithus eptapetalus, Eiffellithus eximius and the last occurrences of Corollithion kennedyi and Axopodorhabdus albianus. These bioevents have been correlated with those of other biostratigraphically and chemostratigraphically studied CTBI sections.  相似文献

Marly sediments of the early Messinian Abad Member of the Turre Formation from the northeastern sector of the Carboneras-Nijar Basin (southern Spain) have yielded a rich fossil assemblage, of which 60 taxa are documented herein. Besides nannoflora and microfauna, this assemblage includes the first autochthonous macrofauna described from the Abad Member. Based on the calcareous nannofossil assemblage, in particular the occurrence of the zonal index taxon Amaurolithus primus, the sediments are assigned to the Mediterranean calcareous nannofossil zone CNM17, corresponding to the latest Tortonian to earliest Messinian interval. This matches the age range generally reported for the Abad Member. Palaeoecological evidence from calcareous nannofossils (20 autochthonous taxa), planktic and benthic foraminifera (12 taxa), Porifera (3 taxa), Octocorallia (Keratoisis), Serpulidae (4 taxa), Bivalvia (5 taxa), Gastropoda (2 taxa), Brachiopoda (7 taxa), Cirripedia (Faxelepas) and Vertebrata (5 taxa) indicates an upper bathyal environment with an influx of neritic elements for the Abad Member near Carboneras. Additionally, several faunal components may represent allochthonous/parautochthonous elements from adjacent habitats, which were transported into the deep marine setting by turbiditic mass flows. Although similarities exist, the fossil assemblage from the marls is compositionally significantly different from the biota previously documented from a nearby exposed olistostrome, the ‘red breccia’. Similar fossil assemblages from the Mediterranean have so far mainly been reported from the Pliocene-Pleistocene of southern Italy and Greece. The Carboneras fauna thus adds to our knowledge of the development of these habitats and their biota prior to the Messinian salinity crisis. Beyond the novel palaeoenvironmental data, the range of the dyscoliid brachiopod Ceramisia meneghiniana, previously known only from the Pliocene of Italy, is extended to the Miocene of Spain. The cirripede crustacean Pycnolepas paronai De Alessandri, 1895 is transferred to the hitherto monospecific genus Faxelepas Gale, 2015, whereby the range of the latter (previously Maastrichtian to Danian) is extended to the late Miocene.  相似文献

Detailed quantitative calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy was carried out on a subsurface lower–upper Pliocene succession (Kafr El Sheikh Formation) in three offshore wells (Ras El Barr-1, Bougaz-1 and Bougaz East-1), north-east Nile Delta area, Egypt. The standard zonations are easily applied in these sediments and additional biohorizons have been adopted in this study. For early to late Pliocene interval, the following five bioevents are considered reliable: last occurrences (LOs) of Discoaster surculus, D. tamalis, Reticulofenestra pseudoumbilicus and Amaurolithus tricorniculatus and first occurrence of D. asymmetricus. The LO of R. pseudoumbilicus was used to detect the early/late Pliocene boundary in the three studied wells. In Bougaz-1-Well, the LO of D. intercalcaris was used to approximate the Miocene/Pliocene boundary. The calcareous nannofossils are moderate to good preserved. Lower–upper Pliocene sediments are dominated by small-sized reticulofenestrids (R. minuta), Pseudoemiliania lacunosa, Helicosphaera carteri and H. kamptneri. Large size (>7 μm) R. pseudoumbilicus is recorded. Discoaster species is rarely represented. No nannofossils were found in the top part of the Kafr El Sheikh and the overlying Wastani Formations.  相似文献

The Aïn Settara section (Kalaat Senan, Central Tunisia) exposes in very good conditions a continuous marl-limestone alternation, going from the Upper Maastrichtian to the Danian. The Cretaceous-Palaeogene boundary is particularly better exposed than it is in the El Kef type section. The studied section reveals, at first, a typical bed-interbed decimetric to metric limestone-marl alternation. Upon this one, at a meter scale, a second mode of alternation is superimposed: between, firstly, sharp and thick bed-interbed bundles, and, secondly, more diffuse and thinner bundles, which are more difficult to split into beds and interbeds. This frame deals with the equinoxial-precession climatic-forcing. The bed-interbed alternation corresponds to the precession of 21.3 ka average period. The clear bundle-diffuse bundle alternation, comes from the amplitude modulation of the precession by the circa 100 ka period of the eccentricity. This succession is used to build a time floating-scale, adjusted on the Cretaceous-Palaeogene boundary. Fixing this boundary to the value of -65.0 Ma, we obtain a chronometric time-scale, going, for our section, from -65.8 up to -64.4 Ma, that is a total duration of 1.3 m.y. This scale allows to better localize in time the sedimentary and biological phenomenons, which encompass the Cretaceous-Palaeogene boundary.  相似文献

The origin and significance of the Lentas unit in southern Crete (Greece) is still subject to controversies. New stratigraphical and palaeontological results allow correlations with the classical Pindos-type series in Greece. In particular, new datings from reworked fossiliferous limestone pebbles within the Lentas unit are presented. These data concern especially the carbonate microfacies and carbonate microfossils from the latest Early Permian (i.e., from the late Kungurian Substage or Misellina Zone). For the first time in Greece, this period is recognized as being rich in foraminifers and calcareous algae. These fossils are described; especially, two dasycladales Likanella (?) cretae nov. sp. and Uragiellopsis bonneauii nov. sp. are established. The presence of these reworked Palaeotethyan sediments at the base of the Lentas unit suggests a derivation from the Palaeotethyan active margin (arc/fore-arc series).  相似文献

The first high-resolution integrated biostratigraphic study for Santonian/Campanian sediments of the Tabin section in the Kurdistan Region, northeast Iraq is provided. The study, based on 28 closely spaced samples, combines data from planktic foraminifers (25 species), calcareous nannofossils (32 species) and two ammonite genera in the Kometan Formation, marking the Santonian/Campanian boundary (S/C boundary) in the Kurdistan Region. In the absence of the crinoid Marsupites testudinarius, the proposed boundary marker, secondary markers such as calcareous nannofossils, planktic foraminifers and ammonites, have been used to establish a multi-stratigraphic biozonation for the late Santonian–early Campanian duration. Based on the occurrences of calcareous nannofossils, three biozones are identified — Lucianorhabdus cayeuxii (late Santonian), Calculites obscurus (latest Santonian–earliest Campanian), and Broinsonia parca parca (early Campanian). Seven calcareous nannofossil bioevents and three planktic foraminiferal bioevents are also identified. The Santonian/Campanian boundary is marked by: (a) the LO (Last Occurrence) of the planktic foraminifera D. asymetrica, (b) the FOs (First Occurrence) of the calcareous nannofossil species B. parca parca and B. parca constricta, (c) the extinction of several planktic foraminiferal species of Dicarinella and Marginotruncana, (d) the abundance and diversification of the planktic foraminifera genera, Globotruncana and Globotruncanita at the beginning of the Campanian, and (e) the disappearance of the ammonite genus Texanites, 0.5 m below (i.e., at 19 m) the disappearance of all Dicarinella and Marginotruncana species in the study section. Similar to several other Tethyan sections, the FO of B. parca parca is above the LOs of D. concavata and D. asymetrica; the LO of D. asymetrica is used here to mark the S/C boundary  相似文献

The larger foraminifer turnover (LFT), which marks the base of the Ilerdian stage, may be related to the Late Paleocene Thermal Maximum (LPTM), or be at least nearly coeval with that climatic event. Thus, the impact of the LPTM may have been greater than hitherto realised, having also affected mid-latitude shallow-marine biota. This conclusion has been reached after a re-study of the calcareous plankton of the uppermost Paleocene and lowermost Eocene interval of the Campo section in the central southern Pyrenees. Campo is an important reference section because it contains larger foraminifers, planktic foraminifers and calcareous nannofossils, and their co-occurrence was used to intercalibrate their respective zonal schemes. Previous studies at Campo placed the onset of planktic foraminiferal Zone P5 near the base of the Ilerdian, and the calcareous nannofossil NP9/NP10 chronal boundary (sensu Bybell, L.M., Self-Trail, J.M., 1995. Evolutionary, biostratigraphic and taxonomic study of calcareous nannofossils from a continuous Paleocene/Eocene boundary section in New Jersey. US Geol. Surv. Prof. Pap. 1554, pp. 1–36) not less than 150 m above the Ilerdian lower limit. By these estimates, the LPTM (known to have occurred in the middle part of Zone P5 and just before the NP9/NP10 boundary) would be an event much younger than the LFT.However, our reexamination of planktic foraminifers suggests that the base of the Ilerdian is probably situated at the middle of Zone P5 (a possibility proposed by Hillebrandt in 1965, but denied by later authors). For instance, Morozovella occlusa has been found for the first time in the Campo section. Its Last Appearance Datum (LAD), which in the Pyrenees was approximately coeval with that of Morozovella velascoensis (event used to place the top of Zone P5), has been identified in beds situated less than 70 m above the base of the Ilerdian. Such thickness represents a time span of a similar magnitude as the one which separated the LPTM and the LAD of M. occlusa in the deep-water hemipelagic succession of the Basque Basin, in the western Pyrenees. Autochthonous calcareous nannofossils are neither abundant nor well preserved in most of the studied interval, with Rhomboaster bramlettei (the marker of the base of Zone NP10) being extremely rare in lower and middle Ilerdian beds, a fact that makes it very difficult to fix the position of the NP9/NP10 boundary in the Campo section. However, the bases of zones NP9 and NP11 have been located, and they support the zonation with planktic foraminifers. These new data suggest that the LFT and the LPTM may have been coeval or nearly so, a possibility reinforced by correlation with sections of the Basque Basin.Specialists of larger benthic foraminifers can easily delineate the LFT in shallow water carbonate successions of the Tethys domain, and they propose to place the Paleocene/Eocene boundary at the base of the Ilerdian stage. On the other hand, the deep benthic extinction event (BEE) is a major global biotic turnover in the bathyal and abyssal realms, while the ∂13C excursion (CIE) is an excellent tool for correlation between marine and terrestrial records. Therefore, the synchrony or near synchrony postulated here between the LFT, BEE and CIE (all of them probably related to the LPTM) would argue strongly in favour of these events as the criterion to officially redefine the Paleocene/Eocene boundary.  相似文献
