As ectothermic vertebrates, reptiles undergo diurnal and seasonal changes in body temperature, which affect many biological functions. In conjunction with a general review regarding the effects of temperature on digestion in reptiles, we describe the effects of various temperatures (20-35 degrees C) on the metabolic response to digestion in the Burmese python (Python molurus). The snakes were fed mice amounting to 20% of their body weight and gas exchange (oxygen uptake and CO(2) production) were measured until digestion had ended and gas exchange returned to fasting levels. Elevated temperature was associated with a faster and larger metabolic increase after ingestion, and the time required to return to fasting levels was markedly longer at low temperature. The factorial increase between fasting oxygen consumption (VO(2)) and maximal VO(2) during digestion was, however, similar at all temperatures studied. Furthermore, the integrated SDA response was not affected by temperature suggesting the costs associated with digestion are temperature-independent. Other studies on reptiles show that digestive efficiency is only marginally affected by temperature and we conclude that selection of higher body temperatures during digestion (postprandial thermophilic response) primarily reduces the time required for digestion.  相似文献

Hepatozoon ayorgbor n. sp. is described from specimens of Python regius imported from Ghana. Gametocytes were found in the peripheral blood of 43 of 55 snakes examined. Localization of gametocytes was mainly inside the erythrocytes; free gametocytes were found in 15 (34.9%) positive specimens. Infections of laboratory-reared Culex quinquefasciatus feeding on infected snakes, as well as experimental infection of juvenile Python regius by ingestion of infected mosquitoes, were performed to complete the life cycle. Similarly, transmission to different snake species (Boa constrictor and Lamprophis fuliginosus) and lizards (Lepidodactylus lugubris) was performed to assess the host specificity. Isolates were compared with Hepatozoon species from sub-Saharan reptiles and described as a new species based on the morphology, phylogenetic analysis, and a complete life cycle.  相似文献

Abstract All amniotes except birds and mammals have the ability to shunt blood past the lungs, but the physiological function of this ability is poorly understood. We studied the role of the shunt in digestion in juvenile American alligators in the following ways. First, we characterized the shunt in fasting and postprandial animals and found that blood was shunted past the lungs during digestion. Second, we disabled the shunt by surgically sealing the left aortic orifice in one group of animals, and we performed a sham surgery in another. We then compared postprandial rates of gastric acid secretion at body temperatures of 19 degrees and 27 degrees C and rates of digestion of bone at 27 degrees C. Twelve hours after eating, maximal rates of gastric acid secretion when measured at 19 degrees and 27 degrees C were significantly less in the disabled group than in sham-operated animals. Twenty-four hours postprandial, a significant decrease was found at 27 degrees C but not at 19 degrees C. For the first half of digestion, dissolution of cortical bone was significantly slower in the disabled animals. These data suggest the right-to-left shunt serves to retain carbon dioxide in the body so that it can be used by the gastrointestinal system. We hypothesize that the foramen of Panizza functions to enrich with oxygen blood that is destined for the gastrointestinal system to power proton pumps and other energy-demanding processes of digestion and that the right-to-left shunt serves to provide carbon dioxide to gastrointestinal organs besides the stomach, such as the pancreas, spleen, upper small intestine, and liver.  相似文献

Digestion of large meals in pythons produces substantial increases in heart rate and cardiac output, as well as a dilation of the mesenteric vascular bed leading to intestinal hyperemia, but the mediators of these effects are unknown. Bolus intra-arterial injections of python neurotensin ([His(3), Val(4), Ala(7)]NT) (1 - 1,000 pmol/kg) into the anesthetized ball python Python regius (n = 7) produced a dose-dependent vasodilation that was associated with a decrease in systemic pressure (P(sys)) and increase in systemic blood flow (Q(sys)). There was no effect on pulmonary pressure and conductance. A significant (P < 0.05) increase in heart rate (f(H)) and total cardiac output (Q(tot)) was seen only at high doses (>30 pmol/kg). The systemic vasodilation and increase in Q(tot) persisted after beta-adrenergic blockade with propranolol, but the rise in f(H) was abolished. Also, the systemic vasodilation persisted after histamine H(2)-receptor blockade. In unanesthetized pythons (n = 4), bolus injection of python NT in a dose as low as 1 pmol/kg produced a significant increase in blood flow to the mesenteric artery (177% +/- 54%; mean +/- SE) and mesenteric conductance (219% +/- 74%) without any increase in Q(sys), systemic conductance, P(sys), and f(H). The data provide evidence that NT is an important hormonal mediator of postprandial intestinal hyperemia in the python, but its involvement in mediating the cardiac responses to digestion may be relatively minor.  相似文献

Fasting-induced changes in fatty acid composition have been reported to occur within the body lipids of several types of animals; however, little is known about the changes in fatty acid profiles exhibited by reptiles subjected to prolonged fasting. This study characterizes the fatty acid profiles of six reptile species subjected to sublethal periods of fasting lasting 0, 56, 112, and 168 days. Analyses of fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) conducted on the total body lipids of rattlesnakes (Crotalus atrox), ratsnakes (Elaphe obsoleta), pythons (Python regius), boas (Boa constrictor), true vipers (Bitis gabonica), and monitor lizards (Varanus exanthematicus) revealed that all of the species exhibited similar characteristic changes in their fatty acid profiles during starvation stress. According to ANOVAs, the four most effective indicators of the onset of starvation were significant increases in the [1] fatty acid unsaturation index as well as ratios of [2] linoleic to palmitoleic acid, [3] oleic to palmitic, and [4] arachidonic to total fatty acid concentrations. The results of this study suggest that FAME analyses might be useful for identifying nutritional stress and/or starvation among squamate reptiles; however, forthcoming studies will be required to validate the generality of these responses. I also review the potential limitations of this approach, and suggest experiments that will be important for future applications of FAME analyses. Ultimately, it is hoped that FAME analyses can be used in conjunction with current practices as an additional tool to characterize the prevalence of starvation experienced by free-living reptiles.  相似文献

We investigated the energy source fuelling the post-feeding metabolic upregulation (specific dynamic action, SDA) in pythons (Python regius). Our goal was to distinguish between two alternatives: (i) snakes fuel SDA by metabolizing energy depots from their tissues; or (ii) snakes fuel SDA by metabolizing their prey. To characterize the postprandial response of pythons we used transcutaneous ultrasonography to measure organ-size changes and respirometry to record oxygen consumption. To discriminate unequivocally between the two hypotheses, we enriched mice (= prey) with the stable isotope of carbon (13C). For two weeks after feeding we quantified the CO2 exhaled by pythons and determined its isotopic 13C/12C signature. Ultrasonography and respirometry showed typical postprandial responses in pythons. After feeding, the isotope ratio of the exhaled breath changed rapidly to values that characterized enriched mouse tissue, followed by a very slow change towards less enriched values over a period of two weeks after feeding. We conclude that pythons metabolize their prey to fuel SDA. The slowly declining delta13C values indicate that less enriched tissues (bone, cartilage and collagen) from the mouse become available after several days of digestion.  相似文献

Burmese pythons (Python molurus) regulate digestive performance and metabolism with the ingestion of each meal. To explore the python's postprandial responses, we monitored the concentrations of blood micronutrients and homocysteine during fasting and for 15 days after feeding. Plasma folate concentrations peaked with a 270% increase over fasting levels 3 days after feeding, whereas plasma B-12 peaked with a 66% increase within 1 day. Erythrocyte folate concentrations were highest 15 days after feeding with a 44% increase. The major plasma folate was 5-methyltetrahydrofolate during fasting and was non-5-methyltetrahydrofolate during digestion, whereas erythrocytes contained polyglutamyl forms of non-5-methyltetrahydrofolate. Plasma homocysteine concentrations peaked with a 56% increase 3 days after feeding, and were markedly greater than those of mammals. Plasma zinc and copper did not change significantly. Plasma zinc concentrations were 20 times greater than plasma copper and approximately 30 times higher than those of mammals. Pythons showed a significant postprandial decline of 25% in hematocrit. Plasma pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (coenzyme form of vitamin B-6) was not detected probably due to its tight protein binding. Most micronutrient concentrations appear to plateau 3 days after feeding, suggesting that pythons have relatively rapid homeostasis of micronutrients despite the ingestion of large meals.  相似文献

At present, it is unknown why patients suffering from severe pulmonary hypertension (PH) benefit from atrial septostomy (AS). Suggested mechanisms include enhanced filling of the left ventricle, reduction of right ventricular preload, increased oxygen availability in the peripheral tissue, or a combination. A multiscale computational model of the cardiovascular system was used to assess the effects of AS in PH. Our model simulates beat-to-beat dynamics of the four cardiac chambers with valves and the systemic and pulmonary circulations, including an atrial septal defect (ASD). Oxygen saturation was computed for each model compartment. The acute effect of AS on systemic flow and oxygen delivery in PH was assessed by a series of simulations with combinations of different ASD diameters, pulmonary flows, and degrees of PH. In addition, blood pressures at rest and during exercise were compared between circulations with PH before and after AS. If PH did not result in a right atrial pressure exceeding the left one, AS caused a left-to-right shunt flow that resulted in decreased oxygenation and a further increase of right ventricular pump load. Only in the case of severe PH a right-to-left shunt flow occurred during exercise, which improved left ventricular preload reserve and maintained blood pressure but did not improve oxygenation. AS only improves symptoms of right heart failure in patients with severe PH if net right-to-left shunt flow occurs during exercise. This flow enhances left ventricular filling, allows blood pressure maintenance, but does not increase oxygen availability in the peripheral tissue.  相似文献

The heart of Python regius is functionally divided so that systemic blood pressure is much higher than pulmonary pressure (6.6+/-1.0 and 0.7+/-0.1 kPa, respectively). The present study shows that force production of cardiac strips from the cavum arteriosum and cavum pulmonale exhibits similar force production when stimulated in vitro. The high systemic blood pressure is caused, therefore, by a thicker ventricular wall surrounding the cavum arteriosum rather than differences in the intrinsic properties of the cardiac tissues. Similarly, there were no differences between the contractile properties of right and left atria. Force production was similar in atria and ventricle but the atria contracted and relaxed much faster than the ventricle. Graded hypoxia markedly reduced twitch force of all four cardiac tissues, and this was most pronounced when PO(2) was below 40 kPa. In contrast, the four cardiac tissues were insensitive to acidosis during normoxia although acidosis increased the sensitivity to hypoxia. Adrenergic stimulation increased twitch force of all cardiac tissues, while cholinergic stimulation only affected the atria and reduced twitch force markedly. In spite of the different oxygen availability of the two sides of the heart, the biochemical and functional properties are alike and the differences may instead be overcome by the coronary blood supply.  相似文献

Flatfish species seem to require dietary taurine for normal growth and development. Although dietary taurine supplementation has been recommended for flatfish, little is known about the mechanisms of taurine absorption in the digestive tract of flatfish throughout ontogeny. This study described the cloning and ontogenetic expression of the taurine transporter (TauT) in the flatfish Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis). Results showed a high similarity between TauT in Senegalese sole and other vertebrates, but a change in TauT amino acid sequences indicates that taurine transport may differ between mammals and fish, reptiles or birds. Moreover, results showed that Senegalese sole metamorphosis is an important developmental trigger to promote taurine transport in larvae, especially in muscle tissues, which may be important for larval growth. Results also indicated that the capacity to uptake dietary taurine in the digestive tract is already established in larvae at the onset of metamorphosis. In Senegalese sole juveniles, TauT expression was highest in brain, heart and eye. These are organs where taurine is usually found in high concentrations and is believed to play important biological roles. In the digestive tract of juveniles, TauT was more expressed in stomach and hindgut, indicating that dietary taurine is quickly absorbed when digestion begins and taurine endogenously used for bile salt conjugation may be recycled at the posterior end of the digestive tract. Therefore, these results suggest an enterohepatic recycling pathway for taurine in Senegalese sole, a process that may be important for maintenance of the taurine body levels in flatfish species.  相似文献

We studied the thermophilic response to feeding of a typical desert adapted anuran from the Monte Desert. Our aim was to evaluate thermal changes in the selected body temperature of adult frogs of Pleurodema nebulosum, and measure the intestinal passage time, and food digestion. Our results show that after feeding, they selected higher micro-environmental temperatures ~ + 2 °C than frogs that remained starved. Pleurodema nebulosum would present a postprandial thermophilic response. The time of retention of food in the digestive tract was thermo-dependent, being lower in those individuals who were incubated at high temperatures (25 °C) compared to those subjected to lower temperatures (20 °C). Although we did not detect effects of temperature on digestive efficiency, the mass of faecal material indicates an increase at temperatures closer to the selected ones, suggesting that the defecation rate is influenced by temperature. Laiuoperinae frogs are characterized by explosive breeding behavior and fast growing rate. The digestive efficiency is essential for acquiring energy necessary for growth, reproduction and refuge-seeking, among others. In this framework, the differential selection of temperatures between moments of fasting and feeding allows the frogs to maintain a high digestive efficiency, maximizing the absorption of nutrients.  相似文献

The cardiovascular actions of python bradykinin (BK) and substance P (SP) have been investigated in the anesthetized ball python, Python regius. Bolus intra-arterial injections of python BK (0.03-3 nmol/kg) produced concentration-dependent increases in arterial blood pressure, heart rate (HR), and cardiac output concomitant with small decreases in systemic resistance and stroke volume. Intra-arterial injection of 3 nmol/kg python BK produced a tenfold increase in circulating concentration of norepinephrine, but epinephrine levels did not change. BK-induced tachycardia was attenuated (>90%) by the beta-adrenergic receptor antagonist sotalol, and the hypertensive response was attenuated (>70%) by the alpha-adrenergic receptor antagonist prazosin, indicating that effects of python BK are mediated at least in part by activation of the extensive network of adrenergic neurons present in vascular tissues. Bolus intra-arterial injections of python SP in the range 0. 01-30 pmol/kg produced concentration-dependent decreases in arterial blood pressure and systemic peripheral resistance concomitant with increases in cardiac output and stroke volume but with only minor effects on HR. The data suggest that kinins play a physiologically important role in cardiovascular regulation in the python.  相似文献

The past decade has witnessed a dramatic increase in studies of amphibian and reptile specific dynamic action (SDA). These studies have demonstrated that SDA, the summed energy expended on meal digestion and assimilation, is affected significantly by meal size, meal type, and body size and to some extent by body temperature. While much of this attention has been directed at anuran and reptile SDA, we investigated the effects of meal size, meal type, and body temperature on the postprandial metabolic responses and the SDA of the tiger salamander (Ambystoma tigrinum tigrinum). We also compared the SDA responses among six species of Ambystoma salamanders representing the breadth of Ambystoma phylogeny. Postprandial peaks in VO(2) and VO(2), duration of elevated metabolism, and SDA of tiger salamanders increased with the size of cricket meals (2.5%-12.5% of body mass). For A. tigrinum, as for other ectotherms, a doubling of meal size results in an approximate doubling of SDA, a function of equal increases in peak VO(2) and duration. For nine meal types of equivalent size (5% of body mass), the digestion of hard-bodied prey (crickets, superworms, mealworms, beetles) generated larger SDA responses than the digestion of soft-bodied prey (redworms, beetle larvae). Body temperature affected the profile of postprandial metabolism, increasing the peak and shortening the duration of the profile as body temperature increased. SDA was equivalent among three body temperatures (20 degrees, 25 degrees, and 30 degrees C) but decreased significantly at 15 degrees C. Comparatively, the postprandial metabolic responses and SDA of Ambystoma jeffersonianum, Ambystoma maculatum, Ambystoma opacum, Ambystoma talpoideum, Ambystoma texanum, and the conspecific Ambystoma tigrinum mavortium digesting cricket meals that were 5% of their body mass were similar (independent of body mass) to those of A. t. tigrinum. Among the six species, standard metabolic rate, peak postprandial VO(2), and SDA scaled with body mass with mass exponents of 0.72, 0.78, and 1.05, respectively.  相似文献

Snakes can ingest large meals and exhibit marked increases in metabolic rate during digestion. Because postprandial oxygen consumption in some snakes may surpass that attained during exercise, studies of digestion offers an alternative avenue to understand the cardio-respiratory responses to elevated metabolic rate in reptiles. The effects of feeding on metabolic rate, arterial oxygen levels, and arterial acid-base status in the snake Python molorus are described. Four snakes (180-250 g) were cannulated in the dorsal aorta and blood samples were obtained during 72 h following ingestion of a meal (rat pups) exceeding 20% of body weight. Oxygen consumption increased from a fasting value of 1.71 +/- 0.08 to 5.54 +/- 0.42 ml kg-1 min-1 at 48 h following feeding, and the respiratory gas exchange ratio increased from 0.67 +/- 0.02 to a maximum of 0.92 +/- 0.03 at 32 h. Plasma lactate was always less than 0.5 mM, so the postprandial increase in metabolic rate was met by aerobic respiration. In fasting animals, arterial PO2 was 66 +/- 4 mmHg and haemoglobin-O2 saturation was 92 +/- 3%; similar values were recorded during digestion, but haematocrit decreased from 15.8 +/- 1.0 to 9.8 +/- 0.8 due to repeated blood sampling. Plasma [HCO3-] increased from a fasting level of 19.3 +/- 0.8 to 25.8 +/- 1.0 mmol l-1 at 24 h after feeding. However, because arterial PCO2 increased from 21.1 +/- 0.5 to 27.9 +/- 1.4 mmHg, there was no significant change in arterial pH from the fasting value of 7.52 +/- 0.01. Acid-base status returned to pre-feeding levels at 72 h following feeding. The increased arterial PCO2 is most likely explained by a reduction in ventilation relative to metabolism, but we predict that lung PO2 does not decrease below 115 mmHg. Although ingestion of large meals is associated with large metabolic changes in pythons, the attendant changes in blood gases are relatively small. In particular, the small changes in plasma [HCO3-] and stable pH show that pythons respond very differently to digestion than alligators where very large alkaline tides have been observed. It is unclear why pythons and alligators differ in the magnitude of their responses, but given these interspecific differences it seems worthwhile to describe arterial blood gases during digestion in other species of ectothermic vertebrates.  相似文献

Empirical studies suggest that individuals with a high resting metabolic rate (RMR) are at an advantage under favourable conditions because they digest food rapidly and exhibit a greater growth potential. However, we hypothesised that high-RMR individuals have less energy available for digestion under hypoxia than they do under normoxia due to their relatively high maintenance cost. To test this hypothesis, we measured the RMR and postprandial metabolic responses of juvenile southern catfish, Silurus meridionalis, under normoxia and moderate hypoxia. The results provided the first evidence that (1) both the RMR and postprandial metabolic rate showed repeatability across different water [O2] conditions and (2) the correlation between the RMR and postprandial metabolic traits differs with changes in environmental factors (water [O2]). These findings suggested that the digestive advantage of individual southern catfish with a high RMR is impaired under hypoxia.  相似文献

The zoophytophagous feeding habits of larvae and adults of the rove beetle, Philonthus quisquiliarius (Gyllenhal) (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae), are reported for the first time. This study evaluates the effects of different feeding regimes on its growth and reproductive performance (i.e., larval growth, adult weight gain, consumption, fecundity and fertility) and digestive physiology. Larvae presented similar growth rates when fed on living animal or on green plant material for 48h. However, higher consumption rates and lower efficiencies of conversion of digested matter to body mass were obtained when leaves were consumed. Adults presented also positive weight gains regardless of the food consumed (plant or animal material). Interestingly, the highest weight gain rate and efficiency of digestion resulted when adults fed on a rearing diet containing nutrients from both animals and plants. Moreover, we have found negative effects upon P. quisquiliarius fecundity and fertility when supplemental plant nutrients were removed from the optimum rearing diet. Physiological adaptations to allow trophic switching between predation and phytophagy have been found, such as the higher ratio of α-amylase activity to protease activity to deal with the inverted protein-carbohydrate ratio of plant versus animal tissues. Furthermore, this species has an arsenal of digestive proteases whose activity is affected by the type of diet ingested. All together, our results suggest that P. quisquiliarius needs certain nutrients, which are obtained only from plant material. This knowledge will help to understand the complex trophic interactions that occur in agroecosystems.  相似文献

Many ectothermic vertebrates ingest very large meals at infrequent intervals. The digestive processes associated with these meals, often coupled with an extensive hypertrophy of the gastrointestinal organs, are energetically expensive and metabolic rate, therefore, increases substantially after feeding (specific dynamic action, SDA). Here, we review the cardio-respiratory consequences of SDA in amphibians and reptiles. For some snakes, the increased oxygen uptake during SDA is of similar magnitude to that of muscular exercise, and the two physiological states, therefore, exert similar and profound demands on oxygen transport by the cardiorespiratory systems. In several species, SDA is attended by increases in heart rate and overall systemic blood flows, but changes in blood flow distribution remain to be investigated. In snakes, the regulation of heart rate appears to involve a non-adrenergic-non-cholinergic mechanism, which may be a regulatory peptide released from the gastrointestinal system during digestion. Digestion is also associated with a net acid secretion to the stomach that causes an increase in plasma HCO3- concentration (the 'alkaline tide'). Experiments on chronically cannulated amphibians and reptiles, show that this metabolic alkalosis is countered by an increased P(CO2), so that the change in arterial pH is reduced. This respiratory compensation of arterial pH is accomplished through a reduction in ventilation relative to metabolism, but the estimated reductions in lung P(O2) are relatively small. The SDA response is also associated with haematological changes, but large interspecific differences exist. The studies on cardiorespiratory responses to digestion may allow for a further understanding of the physiological and structural constraints that limits the ability of reptiles and amphibians to sustain high metabolic rates.  相似文献

Exercise and digestive processes are known to elevate the metabolic rate of organisms independently. In this study, the effects of simultaneous exercise and digestion were examined in the graceful crab Cancer gracilis. This species exhibited resting oxygen uptake levels between 29 and 42 mg O(2) kg(-1) h(-1). In postprandial crabs, oxygen uptake was approximately double that of unfed crabs. During exercise, oxygen uptake increased three- to fourfold, reaching maximal levels of more than 130 mg O(2) kg(-1 ) h(-1). However, there was no difference in oxygen uptake during activity between unfed and postprandial animals. There was also no difference in exercise endurance levels between unfed and postprandial animals; both sets of animals were unable to right themselves after being turned on their backs, reaching exhaustion after 13-15 attempts. To determine whether increased activity affected gastric processes, the passage of a meal through the digestive system was followed using a fluoroscope. Passage of digesta through the gut system was slower in active animals than in resting crabs. Resting crabs cleared the foregut after approximately 18 h, which was significantly faster than the 34.5 h for constantly active animals. Likewise, the midgut region of resting animals was cleared at a faster rate than that of active animals. Because of residual amounts of digesta remaining in the hindgut, no difference in clearance rates of this section of the gut was evident. The slower clearance times of the foregut were due to a significantly slower rate of mastication of food, as evidenced by a lower cardiac stomach contraction rate. Contraction of the pyloric region of the foregut functions to move the digesta along the midgut, and there was a direct correlation between slower contraction rates of this region and the increased time of passage for digesta through the midgut of active animals. Because increased activity levels affected gastric processing, the crabs exhibited a behavioral response. During a 24-h period after feeding, there was a significant reduction in locomotor activity. The findings of this study suggest a prioritization of metabolic responses toward activity at the expense of digestion. This is discussed in relation to the ability of the crabs to balance the demands of competing physiological systems.  相似文献
