Nuptial feeding by male bushcrickets: an indicator of male quality?   总被引:4,自引:3,他引:1  
Male bushcrickets transfer a spermatophore at mating that consistsof a sperm-containing ampulla and a product of the accessoryglands, the spermatophylax, that is consumed by the female duringinsemination. Male Requena verticalis produce functionally differentspermatophores depending on the availability of sexually receptivefemales. They will maintain high mating frequency by providinga gift sufficient to ensure sperm transfer, or will invest parentallyin females when their mating frequency is low. We examined therelationship between male quality and nuptial feeding underconditions where males invest in ejaculate protection or inparental investment. When investing in ejaculate protection,males reduced the quality of the spermatophylax meal by reducingboth the concentration of protein and the absolute amount ofprotein it contained. There was no relationship between malephenotype and gift size or quality. Moreover, we could findno evidence for the recently advanced hypothesis that femalescan exercise mate choice by interfering with insemination. However,when males were investing parentally, we found a positive associationbetween spermatophylax size and male size, but no relationshipbetween protein content and male size. Males with high levels offluctuating asymmetry invested more heavily in the nutritionalcontent of their spermatophylaxes than did symmetrical males.Thus, male quality does influence nuptial feeding, but in amanner predicted by a model of indirect fitness benefits frommate choice.  相似文献

Dispersals by subadult or adult male baboons are common. In contrast, the occasional transfer of aged baboons is puzzling, given the physical dangers of transfer and the cognitive demands of mastering the ecological and social rules of a new troop. The present data suggest a possible explanation for such transfers in a study of two troops of olive baboons (Papio anubis) in Kenya. Aged males who remained in the troop in which they had been dominant were subjected to significantly higher rates of approach-avoid interactions by the current high-ranking cohort (i.e., the individuals they had dominated years past) when compared to males who had transferred into the troop in their old age. Thus, transfer in old age offers the advantage of relative anonymity. Of the 14 males who progressed into older adulthood in the same troop in which they were in their prime, seven ultimately transferred to a different troop. The seven who remained and the seven who transferred did not differ in the rate at which they were subjected to approach-avoid interactions. However, those who remained had significantly higher rates of various affiliative behaviors (copulations, consortships, grooming and contact with females, and positive interactions with infants). Thus, amid the disadvantages of an old age spent in the troop in which a male baboon was in his prime, a high degree of social affiliation might constitute a sufficient disincentive against transferring. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Numerous animals are known to harbour intracytoplasmic symbionts that gain transmission to a new host generation via female eggs and not male sperm. Bacteria of the genus Wolbachia are a typical example. They infect a large range of arthropod species and manipulate host reproduction in several ways. In terrestrial isopods (woodlice), Wolbachia are responsible for converting males into females (feminization (F)) in some species, or for infertility in certain host crosses in other species (cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI)). Wolbachia with the F phenotype impose a strong excess of females on their host populations, while Wolbachia expressing CI do not. Here, we test the possibility that male mating capacity (MC) is correlated with Wolbachia-induced phenotype. We show that males of isopod hosts harbouring F Wolbachia possess a strong MC (i.e. are able to mate with several females in a short time), while those of species harbouring CI Wolbachia possess a weaker MC. This pattern may be explained either by the selection of high MC following the increase in female-biased sex ratios, or because the F phenotype would lead to population extinction in species where MC is not sufficiently high. This last hypotheses is nevertheless more constrained by population structure.  相似文献

Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) is considered a solitary, territorial felid with a low degree of direct intraspecific interactions. Between 2002 and 2011 we observed four aggressive interactions between five different male Eurasian lynx, where two were lethal. All interactions occurred during the mating season and three of the interactions resulted in takeover of the home range by the intruder. Thus, in this study we demonstrate that aggressive interactions, sometimes with severe consequences, occur in male Eurasian lynx and suggest that they are driven primarily by access to female lynx in the mating season.  相似文献

By living in social groups with potential competitors, animals forgo monopolizing access to resources. Consequently, debate continues over how selection might favour sociality among competitors. For example, several models exist to account for the evolution of shared reproduction in groups. The 'concession model' hypothesizes that dominant reproducers benefit from the presence of subordinates, and hence tolerate some reproduction by subordinates. This mutual benefit to both dominants and subordinates may provide a foundation for the formation of social groups in which multiple members reproduce-a necessary step in the evolution of cooperation. To date, however, the concession model has received virtually no support in vertebrates. Instead, the vast majority of vertebrate data support 'limited control models', which posit that dominant reproducers are simply unable to prevent subordinates from reproducing. Here we present the most comprehensive evidence to date in support of the concession model in a vertebrate. We examined natural variation in the number of adult males in gelada (Theropithecus gelada) reproductive units to assess the extent of reproductive skew in multi-male units. Dominant ('leader') males in units that also had subordinate ('follower') males had a 30 per cent longer tenure than leaders in units that did not have followers, mainly because followers actively defended the group against potential immigrants. Follower males also obtained a small amount of reproduction in the unit, which may have functioned as a concession in return for defending the unit. These results suggest that dominants and subordinates may engage in mutually beneficial reproductive transactions, thus favouring male-male tolerance and cooperation.  相似文献

Sixty-eight males with testicular 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase deficiency (17β-HSD) were identified among a highly inbred Arab population in Israel, and 45 studied over the last 15 years. The founders of this defect originated in the mountainous region of present Lebanon and Syria, but most of the families now live in Jerusalem, Hebron, the Tel-Aviv area, and in particular Gaza, where the frequency of affected males is estimated at 1 in 100 to 150. Affected individuals (46,XY) are born with ambiguity of the genitalia and reared as females until puberty. Thereafter marked virilization occurs, leading in many cases to the spontaneous adoption of a male gender role. Adults develop a male habitus with abundant body hair and beard, and the phallus and testes enlarge to adult proportions. Gender reassignment was possible only when enough erectile tissue was present at birth and developed into a normal size penis with systemic testosterone. male genitoplasty was performed in 15 children and 8 post-pubertal patients, and female genitoplasty in 2 children and 4 post-pubertal patients. In adults the defect is characterized by markedly increased concentrations of 4-androstendione (4-A) with borderline low to normal testosterone (T) levels, and a high 4-A/T ratio. Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) concentrations were either moderately decreased, normal, or high, and dehydroepiandrosterone levels were high. The estrogen pathway was also impaired, even though both estrone and estradiol-17β levels were elevated. Children had low basal levels of all androgens, but the defect could be demonstrated after prolonged stimulation with human chorionic gonadotropin. LH and FSH levels were very high after puberty, and normal in childhood. However, an over-response to gonadotropin-releasing hormone was found at all ages.

Studies in testicular tissue revealed various abnormalities in steroid metabolism. Tissue from pre-pubertal patients metabolized progesterone (P) only to 4-A, while tissue from post-pubertal patients metabolized P to 16- and 16β-hydroxyprogesterone (5.4- to 10.3-fold greater production), 17-hydroxyprogesterone (5.4- to 8-fold smaller production), 4-A and T. 4-A was also metabolized to T, indicating that 17β-HSD was no longer deficient. Flow studies with equimolar concentrations of [14C]P and [3H]pregnenolone showed that the 5-ene pathway was the preferential one for androgen biosynthesis. Both in vivo and in vitro studies indicate that the severity of testicular 17β-HSD deficiency changes with age. Whereas the enzyme activity is absent in childhood, there is a progressive restoration after puberty. Androgen production increases progressively to normal so that T and DHT concentrations are sufficiently high to gradually induce somatic and genital virilization, thus enabling an adequate male gender function.  相似文献

7-tricosene (7T) and 7-pentacosene (7P) are the major components of cuticular hydrocarbons in Drosophila simulans and D. melanogaster males. A chemical study of 16 isofemale lines of D. melanogaster sampled at the first and eighth generations in laboratory conditions showed the stability of chromatographical profiles. Then a large scale study of male 7T/7P polymorphism was performed with 85 populations of D. melanogaster and 29 of D. simulans collected all over the world. There were significant correlations of the values of the balanced ratio (7T − 7P)/(7T + 7P) with geo-climatic parameters, such as latitude, longitude, mean temperature, temperature range and vapour pressure. Parallel variations were also reported for the homologous linear alkanes (23 and 25 Carbon atoms) but not for the longer branched alkanes (27 and 29 Carbon atoms). No correlation was significant for the D. simulans populations studied. In this species a similar polymorphism of 7T/7P was found but restricted to a few populations from West Equatorial Africa. We report in this study, an improved method for identifying male sterile–restorer combinations using the barnasebarstar system of pollination control for heterosis breeding in crop plants, as an alternative to the conventional line × tester cross method. In this strategy, a transgenic male sterile barnase line was retransformed with appropriate barstar constructs. Double transformants carrying both the barnase and barstar genes were identified and screened for their male fertility status. Using this strategy, 66–90% of fertile retransformants (restored events) were obtained in Brassica juncea using two different barstar constructs. Restored events were analysed for their pollen viability and copy number of the barstar gene. Around 90% of the restored events showed high pollen viability and ∼30% contained single copy integrations of the barstar gene. These observations were significantly different from those made in our earlier studies using line (barnase) × tester (barstar) crosses, wherein only two viable male sterile–restorer combinations were identified by screening 88 different cross-combinations. The retransformation strategy not only generated several independent restorers for a given male sterile line from a single transformation experiment but also identified potential restorers in the T0 generation itself leading to significant savings in time, cost and labour. Single copy restored plants with high pollen viability were selfed to segregate male sterile (barnase) and restorer (barstar) lines in the T1 progeny which could subsequently be diversified into appropriate combiners for heterosis breeding. This strategy will be particularly useful for crop plants where poor transformation frequencies and/or lengthy transformation protocols are a major limitation.  相似文献

Summary Kinetochore structure was examined in metaphase spermatogonia and primary spermatocytes of the red firebug,Pyrrhocoris apterus (Pyrrhocoridae, Hemiptera). Chromosome spreads were analysed using light microscopy and serial sections through spindles were studied using electron microscopy. Mitotic chromosomes were rod-shaped bodies and did not possess primary constrictions. Trilaminar kinetochores occurred throughout about 72% of the chromosomal length. Numerous microtubules (MTs) were connected with the outer plates of the kinetochores and interactions between MTs and the remainder of the chromosomal surface were rare. The bivalents formed dumbbell-shaped bodies in metaphase I spermatocytes. At that stage, MTs were found in contact with the entire poleward surface of the chromosomes. Distinct kinetochore material was, however, not detectable and some MTs penetrated deeply into the chromatin. Mitotic and meiotic chromosomes ofP. apterus are holokinetic and consequently the number of kinetochore MTs is expected to be relatively high. In the second part of the study, the question whether holokinetic chromosomes affect spindle MT dynamics is addressed. To this end, primary spermatocytes ofP. apterus were labelled with a widely used antibody, 6-11B-1, directed against acetylated -tubulin. The acetylation of -tubulin is believed to indicate the presence of long-lived MTs. MT bundles were labelled in metaphase and anaphase I spindles, while prophase and prometaphase I spermatocytes did not contain acetylated MTs. MTs in early and mid telophase spindles were not acetylated. Only late telophase I spindles possessed small amounts of acetylated -tubulin. During a long-term study of wild chimpanzees in Tanzania, an unusual gang attack on a young adult male by the alpha male and seven other members of the same unit group (community) was observed and videotaped. Before the gang attack, the victim had not pant-grunted to the alpha male or to other adult males except for the second-ranked male, but had often bullied adult females without apparent reason. The alpha male's violent behavior, therefore, might have been punishment of or revenge against the ill-mannered young chimpanzee. This is the first record of an adult male other than an ex-alpha male becoming the object of ostracism by wild chimpanzees, although the victimized male did manage to return to the group after more than three months, when an ex-alpha male succeeded in reestablishing his former position.  相似文献

Electron microscopic observations demonstrated that the male of the kondo aphid, A. kondoi harbors intracellular symbionts different in shape from those in the viviparous female. Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis indicated that the endosymbiont in the male is less active in synthesizing symbionin, an aphid endosymbiont-specific protein than that in the viviparous female. Symbionin was also found in the winter egg though it was much less in amount than proteins related to the yolk formation. In the fundatrix which hatches out of the fertilized winter egg, symbionin was the most abundant protein.  相似文献

Background

The development of specialized appendages involved in sperm transfer in the males of julid millipedes is an extreme case of specialized, complex structures differentiating in a very advanced phase of post-embryonic development. Here, a non-systemic metamorphosis affects the external morphology and the internal anatomy of a trunk double segment only.

Presentation of the hypothesis

We hypothesize that during early (possibly embryonic) development a segmental marker is produced that remains unexploited throughout late embryonic and early post-embryonic development, until, activated by a systemic signal, it finally determines the release of a segmentally localized but anatomically major change.

Testing the hypothesis

Key to testing the hypothesis are (1) the identification of both the putative segmental marker involved in the localization of the legs to be eventually metamorphosed into gonopods and the systemic signal activating it, (2) the identification of the cell population from which the gonopods are built, and (3) a longitudinal study of the marker's expression throughout late embryonic and, possibly, post-embryonic development.

Implications of the hypothesis

Proving the validity of this hypothesis would demonstrate the existence of a cryptic developmental module that will be activated only months, or years, after it has been first laid down during early development. This study also opens a window onto the very poorly explored domain of late expression of developmental genes and molecular control of late developmental events.  相似文献

Previous studies show that parasite prevalence and mortality/health are related to cultural variation in women's preferences for attractive and masculine traits in men. Other studies have suggested that both male–male competition and wealth may also be important correlates of cross-cultural variation in women's masculinity preferences. Here we examined whether exposure to cues of direct male–male competition, violence, or wealth influenced women's face preferences. We showed women slideshows of images with cues of low and high direct male–male competition/violence or wealth and measured their visual preferences for masculine face traits. Recent visual experience changed women's preferences for facial masculinity, with women preferring more masculine male faces after exposure to images of men engaged in direct physical competition, images of weapons, or images depicting items of high monetary value. Recent visual experience had no significant effects on preferences for masculinity in same-sex faces. Given that high levels of direct physical competition and violence among males may increase the importance of direct intra-sexual competition, it may be adaptive for women to shift visual preferences in favor of males with face cues indicating physical strength and dominance over investment in such environments. Similarly, in wealthy environments investment may be less important than other aspects of quality and so it may be adaptive for women to shift visual preferences in favor of males with face cues indicating other aspects of quality over investment. Overall, our data demonstrate that preferences can be strategically flexible according to recent visual experience and support the notion of environment contingent preferences.  相似文献

Pheromones function not only as mate attractors, but they may also relay important information to prospective mates. It has been shown that vertebrates can distinguish, via olfactory mechanisms, major histocompatibility complex types in their prospective mates. However, whether pheromones can transmit information about immunocompetence is unknown. Here, we show that female mealworm beetles (Tenebrio molitor) prefer pheromones from males with better immunocompetence, indicated by a faster encapsulation rate against a novel antigen, and higher levels of phenoloxidase in haemolymph. Thus, the present study indicates that pheromones could transmit information about males' parasite resistance ability and may work as a reliable sexual ornament for female choice.  相似文献

In fulfilling their daily activities, animals must expend the least amount of energy possible while feeding in order to optimise their energy balance. Food is removed by congeners as a result of exploitation competition. When a resource becomes limited, an increase in the probability of interference competition (direct competition for the resource) is triggered. While a high social rank may increase foraging time and resource access, this status also has detrimental facets. To explore the benefits of dominance/aggression in a context where true monopolisation of resources could be advantageous, we tested three hypotheses related to the patchiness of resources, agonistic activity (i.e. dominance and aggression) and individual attributes (i.e. morphology and behaviour) in a group of captive mouflon males (Ovis ammon musimon). Feeding performance was analysed using linear mixed models based on predictors about patchiness of the resource, and behavioural and morphological indices. No clear relationship was found between dominance and feeding performance. However, the general pattern showed (i) a decrease in overall feeding performance with the dispersion of the resource; (ii) that the discrepancy in feeding performance among individuals was maximal when confronted with intermediate conditions; and (iii) that alternative tactics allowed subordinate individuals to achieve a similar feeding performance to dominants. The results of this study suggest that, over and above agonistic behaviour and dominance, the motivation of individuals and its variation over time, though difficult to evaluate, could be key to understanding the coexistence of alternative behavioural tactics.  相似文献
