Summary Mechanically dividing an insect egg into anterior and posterior fragments results in a segment gap (Sander 1976), a loss of non-terminal segments in the constricted region. By altering the stage and duration of constriction, we produced different types of egg fragments in the pea beetleCallosobruchus. The patterns formed by these fragments suggest the existence of interactions between anterior and posterior egg regions that influence segment patterning and placement. Segments in excess of the numbers expected on the basis of permanent constrictions were produced in fragments when: (1) the constriction was released before cellularization occurred and (2) in addition the complementary fragment degenerated. Apparently the degenerating fragment induced the formation of excess segments in the developing fragment. Differences in the time and extent of excess segment formation in anterior versus posterior fragments suggest an asymmetric distribution of prerequisites for segment formation. This conclusion is consistent with our finding that a partial reversal of segment sequence (double abdomen formation) can be induced only in posterior fragments by a degenerating fragment, but not in anterior fragments (see companion paper). The formation of excess segments shows that the segment gap observed after permanent separation cannot be due to non-specific damage, caused by the process of constriction as such, to the egg or to localized putative segment precursors.  相似文献

Summary Transverse fragmentation of the egg ofDrosophila melanogaster results in the formation of partial larvae. Anterior and posterior egg fragments develop the respective partial larval patterns. The partial patterns do not add up to the complete pattern.Fragmentation near the middle of the egg during early cleavage causes a gap of 3–4 segments on average in the larva. This gap is reduced to 2 segments on average if operations are performed at the early syncytial blastoderm stage. Fragmentation near the pole regions from early cleavage stages onwards causes a gap of only 2 larval segments on average. When the egg is fragmented at the columnar cellular blastoderm stage or later, the gap at all positions amounts to the size of one segment or less. A gap is also found after incomplete fragmentation, when the ooplasmic bridge between both egg parts was constricted beyond a certain limit.A specific shift of the segment-forming capacities along the egg axis is observed from syncytial blastoderm stages onwards. After partial longitudinal fragmentation no additional structures are observed. In general, the partial transverse patterns add up to the complete pattern, but minor structures like single denticles are missing near the fragmentation site. The results are discussed with respect to current concepts of segment pattern formation during early embryogenesis in dipterans.  相似文献

Summary The effect of transverse fragmentation on the segment pattern of the short germ embryo of the locust Schistocerca gregaria has been investigated at two stages subsequent to the formation of the germ anlage. Following fragmentation both anterior and posterior partial embryos were observed, although rarely in a single egg. Anterior partial patterns usually terminated with a segment visible at the time of fragmentation or with the next segment due to appear. Posterior partial patterns began with a wide range of segments depending on the level of fragmentation.Anterior and posterior partial patterns developing in a single egg were usually not complementary and the segments missing sometimes included some segments visible when the embryo was fragmented. Non-complementary patterns resulted following fragmentation in all regions, while complementary patterns only occurred after fragmentation in the visibly-segmented region. The results suggest that following fragmentation isolated posterior portions of the embryo continue to form segments, while isolated anterior regions usually do not. This effect could result from variable damage to an existing pattern of unequally-sized segment primordia, or from the disruption of a process of sequential segmentation in the elongating posterior region of the embryo. The results are broadly compatible with the progress zone model proposed by Summerbell et al. (1973).  相似文献

Posterior pole material was incorporated into middle egg fragments of standard length but different mean position along the longitudinal egg axis. Middle egg fragments of rather posterior location formed only posterior pattern elements, i.e., thoracic and abdominal segments. More anterior middle egg fragments, on the other hand, were able to form complete embryos. The results are at variance with basic suppositions of a recent model of pattern formation in the Euscelis egg.  相似文献

Summary The fertilized egg of the mollusc Lymnaea stagnalis generates a polarized current pattern as measured with the vibrating probe. Here we investigated the basis of these polar ionic currents. Ionic currents were measured around eggs during the second meiotic division after interference with cytokinesis. Cytokinesis was either displaced by centrifugation or inhibited with cytochalasin or nocodazole. Furthermore, ectopic constrictions were induced with lectin treatment. It appeared that the inward current of the animal pole can be displaced by centrifugation and remains associated with the position of the meiotic apparatus. The influence of the meiotic apparatus on the polar current pattern seems to be directly related to membrane constrictions rather than to karyokinesis. This was demonstrated by a change in current density after induction of an ectopic constriction at the vegetal pole and by the abolishment of currents after cytochalasin treatment. Since the location of the outward current was not sensitive to centrifugation, it may be concluded that the vegetal outward current depends upon properties of the vegetal cortex. On the basis of these results, we conclude that the Lymnaea egg generates two types of ionic currents during the second meiotic division. The first is an inward current activated at the site of membrane constrictions. The second is an outward current associated with the vegetal cortex.  相似文献

Summary The double abdomen type of embryonic segment pattern can develop in posterior fragments ofCallosobruchus eggs. In this type of pattern, a series of posterior segments is joined in reversed polarity to an equal set from the original pattern persisting in normal polarity. Reversed and non-reversed sets are fused in a plane of mirror symmetry, which shows in the larval cuticle as a symmetry line. This line may be located anywhere in the posterior thorax or the anterior abdomen. The reversed abdomen may be incomplete caudally due to secondary causes. Polarity reversal and concomitant double abdomen formation occurred only when temporary constriction was terminated before cellularization of the blastoderm, and only when the anterior fragment was degenerating. Maximum reversal frequency was 94% of analyzable posterior partial larvae when the constriction was applied slightly anterior to the middle of the egg when the egg contained 4–32 nuclei. Reversal was often restricted to longitudinal strips of the larval cuticle. The longitudinal borderlines between the reversed and the non-reversed strips ran predominantly along the larval midlines. Such borderlines probably existed in the blastoderm anywhere around its circumference, but borderlines in the future mesoderm and serosa would be internalized during gastrulation and dorsal closure, respectively, and the embryonic midlines would then become secondary borderlines visible in the larval cuticle. If a morphogen is involved in segment pattern formation, its transport in the egg must be polarized longitudinally in order to account for reversals restricted to longitudinal cuticular strips.  相似文献

In chironomid midges, the development of the head and thorax in the embryo requires the function of cytoplasmic determinants localized near the anterior pole of the egg. Experimental inactivation of these determinants causes a dramatic switch in the developmental program of the embryo. Instead of the normal segment pattern, the aberrant pattern “double abdomen” is formed. Head, thorax, and anterior abdominal segments are then replaced by an additional set of posterior abdominal segments jointed with reversed polarity to the original abdomen. To determine the cellular fraction which contains the effective targets for uv induction of double abdomens, Smittia eggs were centrifuged prior to uv irradiation. Accumulation of proteid spheres or lipid droplets in the irradiated anterior pole region caused a considerable decrease in the double abdomen yield. Removal of these components from the target area enhanced double abdomen formation. The maximum yield of double abdomens was obtained after uv irradiation of a cytoplasmic layer in which organelles larger than ribosomes could not be detected. The results of these and other experiments, suggest that ribosomes, ribosomal subunits, or other ribonucleoprotein particles act as effective targets for the uv induction of double abdomens in Smittia eggs.  相似文献

The coevolutionary process between avian brood parasites and their hosts predicts that low intraclutch variation in egg colour appearance favours egg discrimination of parasite eggs by hosts. Low intraclutch variation would also result in high interclutch variation, which would increase the difficulty of evolution of mimicry by the cuckoo, because many host colour patterns might coexist in the same host population. We explored this possibility using an experimental approach in the common magpie, Pica pica, and great spotted cuckoo, Clamator glandarius, system. We artificially parasitized magpie nests with great spotted cuckoo model eggs to assess host response in two populations in Spain (Guadix and Doñana) in relation to intraclutch variation in egg appearance, measured by ultraviolet-visible reflectance spectrophotometry. Individuals that rejected model cuckoo eggs had higher intraclutch variation than accepters, suggesting that an increase, rather than a decrease, in intraclutch variation in magpie egg appearance was advantageous for cuckoo egg discrimination.  相似文献

Summary

This review deals with the question of how cells in the early embryo of the pea-beetle differentiate into a sequential pattern of segments. Anterior and posterior fragments of an egg have different options for development depending on whether they are exposed, before cellularization, to decaying ooplasm in the complementary fragment. Without such exposure all fragments produce fewer segments than corresponding fragments obtained at cellularization. With exposure a fraction of anterior and posterior fragments produces considerably more segments than corresponding fragments obtained at cellularization. In addition, posterior fragments are uniquely different from anterior ones in that they also produce reversal of segment sequence which can be restricted to longitudinal strips of the larval cuticle.

The difference in reaction to decaying ooplasm between anterior and posterior fragments suggests an asymmetry in the control of metamerization. Lateral inhibition by an asymmetric gradient of a diffusible morphogen can describe these observations [18] except for the restriction of reversal to longitudinal strips. The latter requires either that morphogen transport be polarized, possibly by a voltage gradient in the egg, or that the interpretation of cell position is polarized. The induction of double abdomens with UV-light and RNase suggests that RNA is part of the control mechanism. This and strip-restricted reversal are features shared by eggs of Coleoptera and Diptera.  相似文献

In commercial hatcheries, it is common to store eggs before incubation. One practice to improve hatchability consists in egg turning during this storage. This work aims to highlight the effects of turning on the physicochemical aspects of eggs and, consequently, how this turning can influence the hatching of chicks. An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of storage duration and egg turning during storage on egg quality, hatchability, and residual analysis. A total of 7 500 hatching eggs were collected from a 55-week-old commercial Cobb500 breeder flock and storage according to the treatments. The experiment was completely randomized in a 3 × 2 factorial design with three storage periods (4, 8, and 12 days) and egg turning (180° turn of eggs once a day) or no turning during storage, totaling six treatments. Regardless of turning, eggs stored for 4 days weighed more than turned eggs stored for 8 and 12 days, which were similar (P < 0.05). Non-turned eggs experienced an increase in relative shell weight with increased storage duration, and non-turned eggs stored for 4 and 8 days differed from non-turned eggs stored for 12 days (P < 0.05). Albumen pH of turned eggs stored for 4 and 8 days was lower than that of non-turned eggs stored for the same durations (P < 0.05). Albumen pH of turned eggs increased as storage duration increased (P < 0.05). Egg turning increased hatching by 2.02% over that of non-turning (P < 0.05). Eggs stored for 12 days, irrespective of turning, had higher late embryonic mortality (P < 0.05) compared to the other treatments. It was concluded that turning eggs during pre-incubation storage was adequate to improve hatchability of fertile eggs. Storing fertile eggs for 12 days is harmful to egg quality and increases embryo mortality even if eggs were turned.  相似文献

When the surface of sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus purpuratus) sperm is radioiodinated, 75% of the protein-incorporated radioactivity is associated with two glycoproteins of Mr 84,000 (84K) 64,000 (64K) (Lopo and Vacquier 1980). Antibodies were prepared against these two components by separating a Triton X-100 extract of sperm on SDS-polyacrylamide gels, cutting out the band containing the glycoprotein and injecting the homogenized gel into rabbits. Both anti-84K and anti-64K sera agglutinate sperm. Light and EM immunoperoxidase localization show both antigens are distributed over the entire sperm surface. By the immunoperoxidase technique there is some degree of cross-reactivity of both antisera with sperm of other Strongylocentrotus species, but not with those of other genera. Living sperm incubated with anti-84K Fab fragments are completely inhibited from undergoing the egg jelly-induced acrosome reaction and fertilizing eggs. Anti-64K Fab fragments have no effect on the ability of the sperm to undergo the acrosome reaction or fertilize eggs. Sperm incubated in anti-84K or anti-64K Fab fragments undergo the acrosome reaction in response to the Ca2+ ionophore A23187, or when the extracellular pH is increased to 9.2 with NH4OH, indicating that the inhibition of the egg jelly-induced acrosome reaction results from the binding of the anti-84K Fab to an external molecule involved in the initiation or propagation of the acrosome reaction. The 84K glycoprotein is the first sperm surface component identified that might have a role in the induction of the acrosome reaction.  相似文献

Hummingbird incubation: Female attentiveness and egg temperature   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Summary Incubating hummingbirds adjust nest attentiveness patterns in different habitats to permit both regulation of egg temperatures for embryonic development and foraging of the adult for positive energy balance. Anna's (Calype anna) and Black-chinned (Archilochus alexandri) Hummingbirds nesting in California chaparral left the nest six to nine times during each daylight hour. Eggs usually cooled only 3–6°C during absences but sometimes cooled up to 20°C during long absences. One Anna's Hummingbird became torpid for 4.5 h at night following a rainy day; the eggs survived cooling to 11°C and hatched two days later. A Costa's Hummingbird (Calypte costae) nesting in the California desert also left the nest several times per hour in early morning and late afternoon, but shaded the eggs almost continuously during the middle of the day. A Purple-crowned Fairy (Heliothryx barroti) in the warm lowland tropics of Panama left her eggs unattended for a few relatively long periods each day rather than many short periods as do temperate zone species. This pattern is typical of other tropical hummingbirds as well probably because equable ambient temperatures mean thermoregulation of eggs is not as critical a problem as it is in other habitats. In the temperate zone, hummingbirds exhibit behavioral adaptations (timing of reproduction, segmented foraging pattern) and physiological adaptations (torpor and hypothermia) for successful incubation. Embryonic development is successful even when egg temperatures fluctuate widely.  相似文献

Ultrastructural observations (TEM) of the cortical reaction in Limulus polyphemus have been difficult to obtain due to the relative impermeability of the transparent egg envelope to standard fixatives. With the application of trialdehyde fixation techniques [Kalt, M. R., and Tandler, B. (1971). J. Ultrastruct. Res.36, 633–645], the cortical reaction has now been examined and the role of cortical vesicles has been determined. The size of these vesicles in uninseminated eggs is heterogeneous, with small vesicles (0.5 μm) being apposed to the plasmalemma and with large vesicles (4 μm) located in a lower layer of the egg cortex. The contents of the small vesicles are translucent under the electron beam. With the onset of egg activation these vesicles fuse with the overlying plasmalemma. The contents of the large vesicles appear electron dense and exhibit distinctly different morphologies. Shortly after insemination these large vesicles begin to enlarge by fusing together. By 9 min after insemination some enlarged vesicles fuse with the plasmalemma to form pits on the egg surface. The remaining enlarged vesicles continue to fuse with the plasmalemma until approximately 60 min after insemination when few vesicles are remaining.  相似文献

Hosts of brood-parasitic birds must distinguish their own eggs from parasitic mimics, or pay the cost of mistakenly raising a foreign chick. Egg discrimination is easier when different host females of the same species each lay visually distinctive eggs (egg ‘signatures’), which helps to foil mimicry by parasites. Here, we ask whether brood parasitism is associated with lower levels of correlation between different egg traits in hosts, making individual host signatures more distinctive and informative. We used entropy as an index of the potential information content encoded by nine aspects of colour, pattern and luminance of eggs of different species in two African bird families (Cisticolidae parasitized by cuckoo finches Anomalospiza imberbis, and Ploceidae by diederik cuckoos Chrysococcyx caprius). Parasitized species showed consistently higher entropy in egg traits than did related, unparasitized species. Decomposing entropy into two variation components revealed that this was mainly driven by parasitized species having lower levels of correlation between different egg traits, rather than higher overall levels of variation in each individual egg trait. This suggests that irrespective of the constraints that might operate on individual egg traits, hosts can further improve their defensive ‘signatures'' by arranging suites of egg traits into unpredictable combinations.  相似文献

Homeotic gene function in the muscles of Drosophila larvae   总被引:10,自引:6,他引:4       下载免费PDF全文
Hooper JE 《The EMBO journal》1986,5(9):2321-2329
The segmental musculature of Drosophila melanogaster larvae consists of 24-30 muscles per segment. Unique patterns of muscles are found in the three thoracic segments and the first and last abdominal segments; the remaining abdominal segments share the same pattern. Mutations in Ultrabithorax (Ubx) cause partial transformation of the muscle pattern of larval abdominal segments towards metathorax. The muscles of the thorax are not affected. In the first two abdominal segments the changes include the loss of at least 11 `abdominal' muscles and the gain of 11 `thoracic' muscles. Less extensive transformations are seen in more posterior abdominal segments. Anterobithorax, bithorax, postbithorax and bithoraxoid mutations also induce transformations of the larval musculature. Each allelic group affects a domain that is a subset of the entire Ubx domain but these domains are not restricted to compartments or segments and may extend through as many as five segments. In the muscles the segmental distribution of Ubx antigen correlates with the segments affected by Ubx mutations. The different domains of Ubx in mesoderm and ectoderm argue that the segmental diversity of the muscle pattern is not simply induced by the overlying epidermis and that Ubx function in the mesoderm is required for the correct development of abdominal segments.  相似文献

Gonatocerus morrilli (Howard) (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) is an egg parasitoid used in California, USA to control glassy-winged sharpshooter (GWSS), Homalodisca vitripennis (Germar) (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae). Virgin GWSS females deposit non-fertilized eggs and mated females can exhaust sperm reserves for egg fertilization. However, nothing is known about Gonatocerus spp. performance when using non-fertilized GWSS eggs as hosts. Host age preference for oviposition and suitability of non-fertilized GWSS eggs as hosts for G. morrilli reproduction were investigated to determine whether non-fertilized eggs on sentinel plants could be used to monitor egg parasitoid populations. Gonatocerus morrilli parasitized all ages of GWSS eggs (1–8 days old) regardless if the host egg was fertilized or not. In choice tests (fertilized versus non-fertilized eggs), parasitoids failed to emerge as adults from non-fertilized eggs more often than from fertilized eggs. The results indicate that non-fertilized eggs were accepted by G. morrilli as suitable hosts for oviposition, but were less suitable for immature development compared to fertilized eggs.  相似文献

To study whether offspring sex is related to the amount of resources invested in eggs we performed an experiment on zebra finches, Taeniopygia guttata. By manipulating their food supply, we forced two groups of females either to increase or to decrease investment in subsequent eggs. Since zebra finches are sexually dimorphic and the reproductive value of the sexes may vary with maternal nutritional status, we predicted that females would adjust the sex of their offspring to egg quality. Females that received poor-quality food for 7 weeks before egg laying, then food supplemented with proteins after they laid the first egg, significantly increased the mass of subsequent eggs. An increase of egg mass with laying sequence was less pronounced in females that received high-quality food before laying and experienced food deterioration after starting to lay. The proportion of sons in subsequent eggs tended to increase in the latter group (although this was marginally significant) but was not related to laying sequence in the other group: these patterns differed significantly between the groups. Offspring sex was not related to egg mass, but newly hatched male chicks were heavier than female chicks. Furthermore, the hatching success of male eggs was lower than that of female eggs. We suggest that differential hatching success of the sexes and sex differences in mass at hatching may constitute important factors shaping brood sex ratios. A prominent scenario for the evolution of viviparity and placentation in reptiles predicts a step-wise pattern with an initial phase of prolonged oviductal egg retention accompanied by progressive reduction in eggshell thickness culminating in viviparity; calcium placentotrophy evolves secondarily to viviparity. Saiphos equalis is an Australian scincid lizard with a reproductive mode that is uncommon for squamates because eggs are retained in the oviduct until late developmental stages, and the embryonic stage at oviposition varies geographically. We studied calcium mobilization by embryos in two populations with different oviductal egg retention patterns to test the hypothesis that the pattern of nutritional provision of calcium is independent of the embryonic stage at oviposition. Females from one population are viviparous and oviposit eggs containing fully formed embryos, whereas embryos in oviposited eggs of the second population are morphologically less mature, and these eggs hatch several days later. The reproductive mode of this population is denoted as prolonged oviductal egg retention. Yolk provided the highest proportion of calcium to hatchlings in both populations. Eggs of both populations were enclosed in calcified eggshells, but shells of the population with prolonged egg retention had twice the calcium content of the viviparous population and embryos recovered calcium from these eggshells. Placental transfer accounted for a substantial amount of calcium in hatchlings in both populations. Hatchling calcium concentration was higher in the population with prolonged egg retention because these embryos mobilized calcium from yolk, the eggshell and the placenta. This pattern of embryonic calcium provision in which both a calcified eggshell and placentotrophy contribute to embryonic nutrition is novel. The reproductive pattern of S. equalis illustrates that calcified eggshells are compatible with prolonged oviductal egg retention and that viviparity is not requisite to calcium placentotrophy.  相似文献

The aim of this study is determining the different patterns of egg nests and the morphological differences between the specimens of Cicadatra persica Kirkalidy, 1909 (Hemiptera: Cicadidae) distributed in fruit orchards in Erneh located on AL-Sheikh mountain south west of Syria. The appearance of 80 egg nests was studied, and the results showed that there were two basic patterns of egg nests laid by Cicadatra persica, 90% of the egg nests were of the first pattern (consists of several adjacent slits), while 10% of them were of the second pattern (consists of several divergent slits). A random sample consisting of 300 specimens (150 males and 150 females) were also studied concentrating on the differences in the color of the supra-antennal plate and in the number of spurs on the tibia of the hind legs. The results showed that there were two basic patterns of individuals based on the differences in the color of supra-antennal plate. The first pattern (individuals with yellow supra-antennal plates), constituted more than 90%, and the second one (individuals with black supra-antennal plates) constituted less than 10%. The results also showed that there were 27 different patterns based on the number of spurs on the tibia of the hind legs. One of them was a common pattern (2, 3) whose individuals have 2 spurs on the upper side of the tibia of the hind legs and 3 spurs on the lateral side of the tibia of the hind legs. The total percent of this common pattern was 76%. The other 26 patterns were different from each other, and the total percent of all these different patterns was 24%.  相似文献
