Summary Heritability estimates of five quantitative characters, namely, yield, girth, girth increment, virgin bark and renewed bark thickness, of the breeding Phase III Hevea families have been obtained by variance component analyses. In general, the combined heritability estimates for various characters were low to moderate. The heritabilities of these characters based on female variance components, however, were high, suggesting that considerable improvement of each of the characters could be achieved in properly designed experiments.Estimates of heritability for average yields (Range: 0.11–0.34) over different years showed that the first three years' yield was adequate for predicting estimates of genetic variance for the average of five years' yield.Correlation studies on yield with other characters indicated considerable influence of environment, with genetic correlations accounting for about 0.07 to 0.36 in the characters studied.Expected direct response to selection in yield and correlated response in yield to selection for girth at opening and virgin bark thickness have been calculated using three arbitrary values of selection intensity. The efficiency of the correlated response was found to be approximately half that of the direct response. However, the indirect selection for yield using virgin bark thickness appeared to be more favourable than that using the girth at opening favoured by earlier workers.  相似文献

The lack of male pedigree control is the major limitation of an otherwise very useful and cost effective mating design, namely, the polycross. This study was conducted to investigate the relative contribution of different pollen parents to the sound-seeds stage, and also in a field progeny trial. Pollen from 15 radiata pine (Pinus radiata D. Don) parents was mixed in equal volume and applied to the same 15 parents, potentially allowing selfing. Samples of 8-year-old offspring were genotyped from five polycross families, and available seed from three of these five families was tested for unequal paternal contributions. The total paternal exclusion probability of five chloroplast markers and four microsatellite markers in our study was 99.1%. Overall, 81% of the offspring (both seeds and 8-year-old offspring) were assigned to 1 out of the 15 potential male parents, but a surprisingly high proportion (about 13%) was evidently fathered by pollen not included in the pollen-mix. Inconclusive evidence of unequal paternal contribution was observed in some families, but it did not influence the general combining ability (GCA) estimates appreciably, as evident from a high degree of correspondence between GCA estimates obtained from polycross and female-tester mating designs. A non-significant negative correlation was observed between the relative reproductive success (across polycross families) and predicted breeding values for diameter growth.  相似文献

Prediction methods to identify single-cross hybrids with superior yield performance have the potential to greatly improve the efficiency of commercial maize (Zea mays L.) hybrid breeding programs. Our objectives were to (1) identify marker loci associated with quantitative trait loci for hybrid performance or specific combining ability (SCA) in maize, (2) compare hybrid performance prediction by genotypic value estimates with that based on general combining ability (GCA) estimates, and (3) investigate a newly proposed combination of the GCA model with SCA predictions from genotypic value estimates. A total of 270 hybrids was evaluated for grain yield and grain dry matter content in four Dent × Flint factorial mating experiments, their parental inbred lines were genotyped with 20 AFLP primer-enzyme combinations. Markers associated significantly with hybrid performance and SCA were identified, genotypic values and SCA effects were estimated, and four hybrid performance prediction approaches were evaluated. For grain yield, between 38 and 98 significant markers were identified for hybrid performance and between zero and five for SCA. Estimates of prediction efficiency (R 2) ranged from 0.46 to 0.86 for grain yield and from 0.59 to 0.96 for grain dry matter content. Models enhancing the GCA approach with SCA estimates resulted in the highest prediction efficiency if the SCA to GCA ratio was high. We conclude that it is advantageous for prediction of single-cross hybrids to enhance a GCA-based model with SCA effects estimated from molecular marker data, if SCA variances are of similar or larger importance as GCA variances.  相似文献

Nine full-sib families of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) were produced by a 3 × 3 factorial mating design. Rooted cuttings and seedlings of full-sib families were tested together in two field locations. Twelve-millimeter wood increment cores were collected from 10- and 11-year-old test trees. On each of the two sites, there were six blocks and a split-plot design, with propagule type as the whole plot and family as the sub-plot. In addition to the collection of wood samples, height and diameter of 1,600 trees were measured. No significant differences were found between cuttings and seedlings for wood density and growth traits. Significant family variation was found for growth and wood density. Genetic parameters estimated for wood density and growth traits using seedlings and rooted cuttings showed that individual-tree and family heritability estimates from rooted cuttings were similar to or higher than those from seedlings for all traits. Half-sib breeding values for parents were highly correlated based on seedling and rooted cutting estimates for height (0.95) and wood density (0.99) but not for diameter (0.56), which suggests that wood density and height breeding value estimates from rooted cuttings in clonal progeny tests can be estimated by traditional seedling tests, but not for tree diameter.  相似文献

Summary The means of half-sib progenies have been indicated as selection criteria for intra-population improvement while the average of the means of full-sib progenies in diallel analyses have been proposed as predictors, in part, of the means of untested synthetic varieties. When these measures based on progeny means are expressed as deviations from a defined greater population of crosses, they are often termed the general combining ability (GCA). In this study the GCA estimates or a facsimile were theoretically investigated for the one locus, digene, autotetraploid model to verify the genetic basis and its value for selection and prediction in the presence of a naturally occurring phenomena of autopolyploids called gametic disequilibrium with three types of non-additive inheritance. Two breeding objectives were envisioned, the selection of best parents with recurrent selection based on GCA in the continued development of elite populations and the prediction of advanced generation synthetic variety performance. The first generation means of progenies with a potential bias due to gametic disequilibrium were compared to GCA estimation of same progenies in the absence of gametic disequilibrium. The results indicated that testcrossing plants to a population without gametic disequilibrium could be used for selection of best parents. The gametic disequilibrium in the cross may increase or depress selection response dependent on the array of genotypes which happen to be evaluated, on the type of genic action at the locus, and on the frequency of the desirable allele in the testor population. The GCA estimates for prediction of synthetic performance were potentially biased by gametic disequilibrium. An assumption of pollination by the same array of gametes was made for all plants, but obviously was unrealistic for GCA estimation with partial diallels, or with no selfing, and in other situations. The GCA estimate was shown to be an unreliable predictor of synthetic variety performance. The genetic parameters of several agronomic traits were estimated in Coffea canephora in a triangular diallel with six parents and in a partial diallel with 18 parents. The yield data came from harvests obtained over 14 years divided into an initial 6-year cycle, a second cycle of 5 years after cutting back and a third cycle of 3 years after topping. Risk incidence was also observed over several years. The general combining abilities (GCA) were the principal sources of variation for the various traits considered. Parents derived from the Yangambi selections (Democratic Republic of Congo) proved to be best for yields in the three cropping cycles. The rank correlations between the GCA of the various traits indicated that first-cycle production was still not enough to predict the GCA for yield over 14 years. Susceptibility to leaf anthracnose and to drought could lead to modifications in successive classifications, with a more significant impact on production during the first cycle. The differences in susceptibility to Coffee Berry Borers had an impact on yield, which increased in line with coffee tree age. There was a rather good relation between inherent values and values in parent combinations and it was thus possible to choose parents on their own performance.  相似文献

本试验以6份新育成的抗除草剂籼型恢复系为父本,5份生产上广泛应用的不育系为母本,采用不完全双列杂交设计配制了30份杂交组合,对其苗期除草剂抗性和主要农艺性状配合力进行了分析。除草剂抗性鉴定表明,亲本恢复系及三系杂交组合抗性接近完全,两系杂交组合抗性达90%以上。配合力分析表明,不育系除单株有效穗数外其他农艺性状的一般配合力均达到极显著差异;恢复系间一般配合力在所有性状中均达到显著或极显著差异;杂交组合间特殊配合力方差仅在单株产量、结实率、播始历期和千粒重4个性状中达到显著或极显著差异。不育系中,金科1A在单株产量、结实率等7个性状上的一般配合力均为最高,但其特殊配合力方差最小;广占63-4S在千粒重性状上具有最高的一般配合力、最大的特殊配合力方差,在播始历期上具有最高的一般配合力负效应;C815S在株高上的一般配合力负效应最大,同时特殊配合力方差较高。恢复系中,华抗恢101在单株有效穗数上具有最高的一般配合力和特殊配合力方差;华抗恢104在穗长上具有最高的一般配合力,在播始历期上具有最高的一般配合力负效应;华抗恢105在单株产量、结实率等性状上具有最高的一般配合力,在株高上具有最高的一般配合力负效应;华抗恢106在千粒重性状上具有最高的一般配合力和特殊配合力效应方差。利用抗除草剂恢复系配制杂交组合,不仅可以改良其除草剂抗性,也可以通过广泛测配,选择一般配合力强、特殊配合力方差大的亲本配组育成强优势组合。  相似文献

Fifty-two alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) clones, randomly selected from the cultivar Baker and the experimental line MNGRN-4, were evaluated for resistance (based on nematode reproduction) to Pratylenchus penetrans in growth chamber tests (25 C). Twenty-five clones, representing the range of nematodes and eggs per plant, were selected and retested. Four moderately resistant and two susceptible alfalfa clones were identified. Inheritance of resistance to P. penetrans was studied in these six clones using a diallel mating design. The S₁, Fl, and reciprocal progenies differed for numbers of nematodes and eggs per g dry root and for shoot and root weights (P < 0.05). Resistance, measured as numbers of nematodes in roots, was correlated between parental clones and their S₁ families (r = 0.94), parental clones and their half-sib families (r = 0.81), and S₁ and half-sib families (r = 0.88). General combining ability (GCA) effects were significant for nematode resistance traits. Both GCA and specific combining ability (SCA) effects were significant for plant size traits, but SCA was more important than GCA in predicting progeny plant size. Reciprocal effects were significant for both nematode resistance and plant size traits, which may slow selection progress in long-term selection programs. However, the GCA effects are large enough that breeding procedures that capitalize on additive effects should be effective in developing alfalfa cultivars with resistance to P. penetrans.  相似文献

Summary Lines isogenic or near isogenic for traits other than resistance to black root rot from Nicotiana debneyi were developed in eight cultivar backgrounds of burley tobacco (N. tabacum L.). For each cultivar background, a resistant and susceptible selection from the seventh backcross generation plus the recurrent parental cultivar were evaluated for ten agronomic and chemical traits. Resistant selections were statistically different from the susceptible entries for days to flower, total nitrogen content, and total alkaloid content. Also, resistant selections were consistently lower in yield, but the differences were statistically nonsignificant. Resistant selections were also taller in three families and in two families the resistant selections had wider leaves. Linkage of genetic material from N. debneyi with the resistance factor was suggested as the possible reason for differences between resistant and susceptible selections.  相似文献

Combining ability is a measure for selecting elite parents and predicting hybrid performance in plant breeding. However, the genetic basis of combining ability remains unclear and a global view of combining ability from diverse mating designs is lacking. We developed a North Carolina II (NCII) population of 96 Oryza sativa and four male sterile lines to identify parents of greatest value for hybrid rice production. Statistical analyses indicated that general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) contributed variously to different agronomic traits. In a genome‐wide association study (GWAS) of agronomic traits, GCA and SCA, we identified 34 significant associations (< 2.39 × 10?7). The superior alleles of GCA loci (Ghd8, GS3 and qSSR4) accumulated in parental lines with high GCA and explained 30.03% of GCA variance in grain yield, indicating that molecular breeding of high GCA parental lines is feasible. The distinct distributions of these QTLs contributed to the differentiation of parental GCA in subpopulations. GWAS of SCA identified 12 more loci that showed dominance on corresponding agronomic traits. We conclude that the accumulation of superior GCA and SCA alleles is an important contributor to heterosis and QTLs that greatly contributed to combining ability in our study would accelerate the identification of elite inbred lines and breeding of super hybrids.  相似文献

Genetic-parameter estimates and parental breeding-value predictions were compared from open-pollinated and control-pollinated progeny populations of Eucalyptus globulus and two populations of E. nitens. For E. globulus there were two types of open-pollinated populations (native stand open-pollinated and seed orchard open-pollinated) and two types of control-pollinated populations (intra-provenance and interprovenance full-sib families). For E. nitens there were two populations, a seed orchard open-pollinated population and intra-provenance full-sib families. Progeny tests were established across multiple sites and 2-year height and diameter were measured and volume calculated. Genetic parameters from native stand open-pollinated E. globulus were unlike the parameters from the other three E. globulus populations; heritability estimates were severely inflated, presumably due to high levels, and possibly differential levels, of inbreeding depression relative to the other populations. Estimates of dominance variance in the E. globulus full-sib populations were high, but were zero in the E. nitens population. Correlations among parental breeding values, predicted using data from the different populations, were generally low and non-significant, with two exceptions: predictions from the two E. globulus full-sib populations were significantly correlated (r=0.54, P = 0.001), as were predictions from the E. nitens seed orchard OP and full-sib population (r = 0.61, P = 0.08). There was some indication that superior parents of E. globulus native stand open-pollinated families also tended to have above-average breeding values based on the performance of intra-provenance full-sib offspring. The consequences of these results for exploitation of base-population collections from native stands are discussed.  相似文献

Palladium(II) and platinum(II) complexes, [PdX(NS3 1Bu)]BPh4 (X=Cl, Br, I; NS3 1Bu=tris[2-(tert-butylthio)ethyl]amine) and [PtCl(NS3 1Bu)]BPh4, were prepared, and their structures were determined by X-ray analyses. The geometry around the palladium and platinum atoms is square planar. The NS3 1Bu ligand functions as a tridentate ligand and one sulfur atom is not coordinated to the metal. The 1H NMR spectrum of [PdCl(NS3 1Bu)]BPh4 in acetone-d6 exhibited a dynamic behavior. At 20°C the spectrum showed a singlet signal at 1.60 ppm that can be assigned to tert-butyl protons, whereas at −70°C three singlet signals were observed at 1.36, 1.61, and 1.70 ppm with an intensity ratio of 1: 0.25: 2. The signals at 1.36 and 1.70 ppm are assigned to the tert-butyl protons in the square-planar structure, and these signals are consistent with the X-ray structure. The signal at 1.61 ppm can be assigned to the tert-butyl protons in a trigonal-bipyramidal structure where the three tert-butyl groups are magnetically equivalent. Thus, we concluded that the coordination-site exchange occurred via a trigonal-bipyramidal intermediate. The square-planar and trigonal-bipyramidal species of [PdCl(NS3 1Bu)]BPh4 are in equilibrium in acetone-d6. The equilibrium was shifted toward the square-planar species on decreasing the temperature. The 1H NMR spectra for [PdX(NS3 1Bu)]BPh4 (X=Cl, Br, and I) were similar to one another at the same temperature, suggesting that the site-exchange process is insensitive to the kind of coexisting halogen ligand. The site exchange reaction of [PtCl(NS3 1Bu)]BPh4 seems to occur more slowly than that of the palladium(II) analogue.  相似文献

We compared annuli counts from sets of canine, postcanine, and incisor teeth from 450 subsistence-harvested harbor seals, submitted blind to a laboratory. Postcanine and incisor ages were highly correlated with canine age estimates ( r = 0.985 and r = 0.984, respectively), as were postcanine and incisor teeth ( r = 0.984). Age estimates from teeth of 23 known-aged seals were highly correlated; canine teeth r = 0.987; postcanine r = 0.996; incisor r = 0.992, although age for all tooth-types was underestimated for a 29-yr-old seal. Incisor estimates were variable; comparison of age estimates from two incisors/individual ( n = 42) was r = 0.992 if only high-quality age estimates were used and r = 0.705 if lower-quality estimates were used. Morphometrics and incisor-based ages of 164 live-captured seals were explored to derive a method of estimating ages of harbor seals when age estimates are needed immediately; 39 seals were of known age. Curvilinear length, mass, and axial girth were most predictive of age for females, and curvilinear length and mass for males (equations for morphometrically calculating ages are given). Morphometric-based age estimates were highly correlated with known ages ( r = 0.896) and incisor-based estimates ( r = 0.904) and discrepancies between known and morphometric-based ages were small for younger seals. Morphometric-based age estimates also accurately distinguished between young and mature individuals.  相似文献

Background

Rootstocks play an essential role to determining orchard performance of fruit trees. Pyrus communis and Cydonia oblonga are widely used rootstocks for European pear cultivars. The lack of rootstocks adapted to different soil conditions and different grafted cultivars is widely acknowledged in pear culture. Cydonia rootstocks (clonal) and Pyrus rootstocks (seedling or clonal) have their advantages and disadvantages. In each case, site-specific environmental characteristics, specific cultivar response and production objectives must be considered before choosing the best rootstock. In this study, the influence of three Quince (BA 29, Quince A = MA, Quince C = MC) and a local European pear seedling rootstocks on the scion yield, some fruit quality characteristics and leaf macro (N, P, K, Ca and Mg) and micro element (Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn and B) content of ‘Santa Maria’ pear (Pyrus communis L.) were investigated.

Results

Trees on seedling rootstock had the highest annual yield, highest cumulative yield (kg tree−1), largest trunk cross-sectional area (TCSA), lowest yield efficiency and lowest cumulative yield (ton ha−1) in the 10th year after planting. The rootstocks had no significant effect on average fruit weight and fruit volume. Significantly higher fruit firmness was obtained on BA 29 and Quince A. The effect of rootstocks on the mineral element accumulation (N, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn and B) was significant. Leaf analysis showed that rootstocks used had different mineral uptake efficiencies throughout the early season.

Conclusion

The results showed that the rootstocks strongly affected fruit yield, fruit quality and leaf mineral element uptake of ‘Santa Maria’ pear cultivar. Pear seedling and BA 29 rootstock found to be more prominent in terms of several characteristics for ‘Santa Maria’ pear cultivar that is grown in highly calcareous soil in semi-arid climate conditions. We determined the highest N, P (although insignificant), K, Ca, Mg, Fe and Cu mineral element concentrations on the pear seedling and BA 29 rootstocks. According to the results, we recommend the seedling rootstock for normal density plantings (400 trees ha−1) and BA 29 rootstock for high-density plantings (800 trees ha−1) for ‘Santa Maria’ pear cultivar in semi-arid conditions.  相似文献

Malus sieboldii Rehd. exhibits high levels of resistance to Valsa canker caused by Valsa ceratosperma (Tode ex Fr.) Maire while cultivated apples (Malus domestica Borkh.) are susceptible to the disease. In this study, progenies from 23 full-sib families derived from both inter- and intra-specific hybridization among 16 Malus genotypes as parents were assessed for resistance to V. ceratosperma (Vc) for two seasons using an excised shoot assay to determine the pattern of inheritance of the resistance and to also estimate the variance components, narrow-sense heritability, and breeding values of parental genotypes. Generally, M. sieboldii × M. domestica and its reciprocal crosses had more resistant progenies to Vc than intra-specific crosses of M. domestica. Resistance to Vc expressed as the relative lesion length among progenies showed continuous variation irrespective of cross, suggesting the quantitative nature of the resistance to the three virulent isolates of Vc that were tested. Resistance to Vc using the progeny population was analyzed using a mixed linear model based on restricted maximum likelihood. The parental effect (general combining ability (GCA)) was significant while the interaction effect between parents (specific combining ability (SCA)) was relatively small and non-significant. The ratio of SCA/GCA variance was about 32%, suggesting that additive genetic variance had a major contribution to the total genetic variance for resistance to Vc. There was a positive correlation (r = 0.49, p < 0.01) between mid-parental GCA and SCA predictions among 23 full-sib families for the resistance. Narrow-sense heritability estimated by sib analysis was moderate ( [^(h)]2 = 0.29 ) \left( {{{\hat{h}}^2} = 0.29} \right) . The predicted breeding values (BV) of the 16 parents indicated that M. sieboldii “Sanashi 63” and “Hayanarisanashi 1” would be useful for breeding for high levels of resistance to Vc.  相似文献

Summary The F2 potential of single and three-way crosses was evaluated using a set of physiological and yield components. Results were based on an index of selection using (a) only yield components and (b) both physiological and yield components. The indices were constructed using the percentage improvement of F2 over the better parent of the corresponding F1 cross for every character. The performance of F2 plants assessed by the expected value of the regression index was ranked in descending order to provide a ranked F2 distribution (FRD). The FRD was divided into four equal parts, T25 (top 25%), T50 (26–50%), T75 (51–75%) and T100 (76–100%). F3 families derived from F2 plants in T25 were found to provide a higher frequency of selections for pod number than T50, T75 and T100. The frequency of selections was higher in three-way than single crosses. Selection index based on physiological and yield components was more efficient in trapping F2 plants providing selections in F3 than the index based on yield components only. The results brought out the importance of bunch x bunch crosses as a complement to the usually advocated bunch x runner ones.  相似文献

Predicting heterosis and F1 performance from the parental generation could largely enhance the efficiency of breeding hybrid or synthetic cultivars. This study was undertaken to determine the relationship between parental distances estimated from phenotypic traits or molecular markers with heterosis, F1 performance and general combining ability (GCA) in Ethiopian mustard (Brassica carinata). Nine inbred lines representing seven different geographic regions of Ethiopia were crossed in half-diallel. The nine parents along with their 36 F1s were evaluated in a replicated field trail at three locations in Ethiopia. Distances among the parents were calculated from 14 phenotypic traits (Euclidean distance, ED) and 182 random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers (Jaccard’s distances, JD), and correlated with heterosis, F1 performance and GCA sum of parents (GCAsum). The correlation between phenotypic and molecular distances was low (r=0.34, P≤0.05). Parents with low molecular distance also had low phenotypic distance, but parents with high molecular distance had either high, intermediate or low phenotypic distance. Phenotypic distance was highly significantly correlated with mid-parent heterosis (r=0.53), F1 performance (r=0.61) and GCA (r=0.79) for seed yield. Phenotypic distance was also positively correlated with (1) heterosis, F1 performance and GCA for plant height and seeds plant−1, (2) heterosis for number of pods plant−1, and (3) F1 performance for 1,000 seed weight. Molecular distance was correlated with GCAsum (r=0.36, P≤0.05) but not significantly with heterosis and F1 performance for seed yield. For each parent a mean distance was calculated by averaging the distances to the eight other parents. Likewise, mean heterosis was estimated by averaging the heterosis obtained when each parent is crossed with the other eight. For seed yield, both mean ED and JD were significantly correlated with GCA (r=0.90, P≤0.01 for ED and r=0.68, P≤0.05 for JD) and mean heterosis (r=0.79, P≤0.05 for ED and r=0.77, P≤0.05 for JD). In conclusion, parental distances estimated from phenotypic traits better predicted heterosis, F1 performance and GCA than distances estimated from RAPD markers. Net CO2 uptake rates (P N) were measured for the vine cacti Hylocereus undatus and Selenicereus megalanthus under relatively extreme climatic conditions in Israel. Withholding water decreased rates and the daily amount of CO2 uptake by about 10 % per day. Compared with more moderate climates within environmental chambers, the higher temperatures and lower relative humidity in the field led to a more rapid response to drought. The upper envelopes of scatter diagrams for P N versus temperature for these Crassulacean acid metabolism species, which indicate the maximal rates at a particular temperature, were determined for both night time CO2 uptake in Phase I (mediated by phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase, PEPC) and early morning uptake in Phase II (mediated by ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase, RuBPCO). As stem temperature increased above 13 °C, the maximal P N increased exponentially, reaching maxima near 27 °C of 12 and 8 μmol m−2 s−1 for Phases I and II, respectively, for H. undatus and 6 and 4 μmol m−2 s−1, respectively, for S. megalanthus. Based on the Arrhenius equation, the apparent activation energies of PEPC and RuBPCO were 103 and 86 kJ mol−1, respectively, for H. undatus and 77 and 49 kJ mol−1, respectively, for S. megalanthus, within the range determined for a diverse group of species using different methodologies. One approach to gain an insight into the genetics of tree architecture is to make use of morphologically divergent parents and study their segregating progeny in the F2 and backcross (B1) generations. This approach was chosen in the present study in which material of a three-generation pedigree growing side by side in a replicated plantation, was analyzed. The pedigree included Populus trichocarpa (T) and P. deltoides (D) parents, their F1 and F2 hybrids and their B1 hybrids to the D parent. The trees were grown in the environment of the T parent and measured for the first 2 years of growth. Nine quantitative traits were studied at the stem, branch and leaf levels of tree architecture, in which the original parents differed. Strong F1 hybrid vigor relative to the better parent (T) was expressed in growth and its components. Most quantitative traits in the F2 and B1 hybrids were intermediate between the T and D parents but displayed a wide range of variation due to segregation. The results from the analysis of variance indicated that all morphometric traits were significantly different among F2 and B1 clones, but the B1 hybrids were more sensitive to replicates than the F2. Broad-sense heritabilities (H 2) based on clonal means ranged from moderately high to high (0.50–0.90) for the traits studied, with H 2 values varying over age. The H 2 estimates reflected greater environmental noise in the B1 than in the F2, presumably due to the greater proportion of maladaptive D alleles in those hybrids. In both families, sylleptic branch number and length, and leaf size on the terminal, showed strong genetic correlations with stem growth. The large divergence between the two original parents in the traits studied, combined with the high chromosome number in Populus (2n=38), makes this pedigree well suited for the estimation of the number of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) underlying quantitative variation by Wright's biometric method (1968). Variation in several traits was found to be under the control of surprisingly few major QTLs: 3–4 in 2nd-year height and diameter growth, a single QTL in stem diameter/height ratio.  相似文献

Summary The ability to predict agronomic performance of progeny from a cross would be a great benefit to plant breeders in selecting parents. The predictive value of parental genetic relationships estimating F1 progeny means and F4 family variances of nine argronomic traits was tested in 76 oat crosses, using genetic distance measures based on coefficients-of-parentage, quantitatively inherited morphological characters, and discretely inherited biochemical and morphological characters. Coefficients-of-parentage were better predictors of F1 performance than similarity measures derived from plant morphology or discretely inherited characters. Combined distance measures were better estimators of F1 specific combining ability (SCA) effects than any single measure. Among cultivars of similar adaptation and quantitative morphology, crosses between parents with high coefficients-of-parentage gave higher SCA effect values than crosses of distantly related parents for grain yield and total biomass. The opposite was found for crosses among cultivars of different adaptation or quantitative morphology. The best predictor of trait variances among F4 families was coefficients-of-parentage. Crosses between more distantly related parents produced larger variances among families than crosses between closely related parents for plant biomass. For grain yield, test weight, heading date, grain filling period, and maturity date, crosses between more closely related parents produced larger among-family variances than crosses of distantly related parents. Crosses between more distantly related parents involved at least one parent unadapted to central New York, and resulted in most of the progeny being generally unadapted. This, in part, may account for the low genetic variances for heading date, test weight, and grain yield in crosses of distantly related parents.  相似文献
