Boron uptake and translocation in some cotton cultivars   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Aims

Boron (B) is the most deficient micronutrient in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.). It is generally accepted that B is immobile in cotton phloem, but some cultivars could remobilize the nutrient. In order to further understand B uptake and mobility in various cotton cultivars two experiments were conducted.

Methods

In experiment-1, cotton cultivars were grown in 10B enriched or natural abundance nutrient solutions for 4 weeks and transferred to nutrient solutions ranging from deficient to sufficient in B. In experiment-2 10B enriched boric acid was applied to cotton leaves and B mobilization was determined.

Results

In deficient plants, B previously supplied to roots was remobilized from older to younger plant tissues, but the amount was insufficient to maintain growth. Boron deficiency symptoms appeared and progressed with time. Boron applied to leaves was taken up and remobilized within 24 h. Boron mobilization was higher to plant parts above the treated region.

Conclusion

Boron uptake and mobilization was similar among cotton cultivars. Boron applied to cotton leaves shows a preferential translocation to younger tissues. Foliar sprays of B to cotton may be used to cope with a temporary deficiency, but to achieve full growth and development B must be available to cotton throughout the plant cycle.  相似文献

Background and aims

Iron (Fe) toxicity is a wide-spread stress in lowland rice production. The aim of this study was to differentiate between responses to acute Fe stress during the vegetative stage and chronic Fe stress throughout the growing period.

Methods

Six rice genotypes were tested in a semi-artificial greenhouse setup, in which acute (almost 1500 mg L?1 Fe in soil solution during the vegetative stage) and chronic (200 to 300 mg L?1 Fe throughout the season) Fe toxicity were simulated.

Results

Acute Fe stress induced early development of heavy leaf bronzing, whereas moderate symptoms occurred in the chronic treatment throughout the season. Grain yields were only reduced in the chronic stress treatment (?23 %) due to reductions in spikelet fertility, grain number and grain weight. Symptom formation during the early growth stages did not reflect yield responses in all genotypes. Only one genotype showed increases in grain Fe concentrations (24 % in the acute stress and 44 % in the chronic stress) compared to the control.

Conclusions

Contrasting genotypes responded differently to acute and chronic Fe toxicity, and one genotype showed consistent tolerance and the ability to translocate excess Fe into grains. These traits can be useful in the adaptive breeding of rice for Fe toxic environments.

Background and aims

This study aims to investigate the effect of nitrogen (N) on grain phosphorus (P) accumulation in japonica rice.

Methods

Six cultivars with contrasting agronomic traits were grown for 3 years (from 2008 to 2010) of field experiments under seven N treatments and 1 year (in 2010) of pot experiments with five N treatments to study the effect of N on grain phosphorus accumulation and to explore its physiological foundation.

Results

Grain total P and phytic acid concentration showed a clearly decreasing trend as N rate increased for both field and pot experiments. Pot experiment revealed that application of N increase plant biomass, but tended to lower plant P uptake, especially for the split topdressing treatments. Both harvest index (HI) and P harvest index (PHI) increased with N rate, but PHI was consistently higher than HI, indicating the larger proportion of P translocation to grain than that of dry matter by N. Further, ratio of PHI/HI differed significantly among genotypes, but was stable across contrasting N treatments.

Conclusions

The combination of decreased plant P uptake and dilution effect of increased grain yield by N is proposed as underlying mechanism of the decreased grain P concentration by high N.  相似文献

Key message

Boron efficiency of scion ‘Fengjie-72' is related to its less reduced boron concentration and distribution in leaves, achieved by decreasing the ratio of available boron in roots under boron-deficient conditions.

Abstract

Boron (B) deficiency is widespread in citrus orchards. Previous studies have demonstrated that the B-efficient navel orange scion ‘Fengjie-72' (Fs) and rootstock Carrizo citrange (Cr) are more tolerant to B deficiency than the closely related B-inefficient scion ‘Newhall’ (Ns) and rootstock trifoliate orange (Tr), respectively. However, the mechanisms underlying such differences remain unclear. Here, we investigated the differences in B distribution and forms among four combinations (Fs/Cr, Fs/Tr, Ns/Cr, and Ns/Tr) under adequate (0.25 mg/L) or deficient (0.001 mg/L) B supply for 300 days in sand culture. The results showed that B concentrations in buds and leaves of Fs-grafted plants were significantly higher than the respective concentrations of Ns-grafted plants under B-deficient conditions. Moreover, B distribution of Fs-grafted plants due to B deficiency was reduced less in leaves, but more in roots as compared to that of Ns-grafted plants. However, Ns/Cr accumulated more B in the scion stem (24 %) than the other combinations (17–19 %) when B was limited. A correlation was established between B efficiency and the ratio of B concentration in the rootstock stem or buds to the scion stem. Under B-deficient conditions, the ratio of available B (free B and semi-bound B) was significantly higher in leaves in Cr-grafted (36 %) than Tr-grafted plants (29 %), but lower in roots of Fs-grafted (22 %) than Ns-grafted plants (28 %). These results suggest that, under B-deficient conditions, differential B efficiency arises probably because Cr transports more B into scion, Fs redistributes B more efficiently within the plant, or both.  相似文献

Background

Rising food demand, slowing productivity growth, poor N-use efficiency in rice, and environmental degradation necessitate the development of more productive, environmentally-sound crop and soil management practices. The system of rice intensification (SRI) has been proposed as a methodology to address these trends. However, it is not known how its modified crop-soil-water management practices affect efficiency of inorganic nitrogen applications.

Methods

Field experiments investigated the impacts of SRI management practices with different N-application rates on grain yield, root growth and activity, uptake of N and its use-efficiency, leaf chlorophyll content, leaf N-concentration, and photosynthetic rate in comparison with standard management practices for transplanted flooded rice (TFR).

Results

Overall, grain yield with SRI was 49 % higher than with TFR, with yield enhanced at every N application dose. N-uptake, use-efficiency, and partial factor productivity from applied N were significantly higher in SRI than TFR. Higher leaf nitrogen and chlorophyll contents during the ripening-stage in SRI plants reflected delayed leaf-senescence, extension of photosynthetic processes, and improved root-shoot activities contributing to increased grain yield.

Conclusions

Rice grown under SRI management used N fertilizer more efficiently due to profuse root development and improved physiological performance resulting in enhanced grain yield compared to traditional flooded rice.  相似文献

Aims

Two pot experiments in a “walk-in” growth chamber with controlled day and night temperatures were conducted to investigate the influence of elevated temperatures along with rice straw incorporation on methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions as well as rice yield.

Methods

Three temperature regimes–29/25, 32/25, and 35/30 °C (Exp. I) and 29/22, 32/25, and 35/28 °C (Exp. II), representing daily maxima/minima were used in the study. Two amounts of rice straw (0 and 6 t ha?1) were applied with four replications in each temperature regime. CH4 and N2O emissions as well as soil redox potential (Eh) were monitored weekly throughout the rice-growing period.

Results

Elevated temperatures increased CH4 emission rates, with a more pronounced effect from flowering to maturity. The increase in emissions was further enhanced by incorporation of rice straw. A decrease in soil Eh to <?100 mV and CH4 emissions was observed early in rice straw–incorporated pots while the soil without straw did not reach negative Eh levels (Exp. I) or showed a delayed decrease (Exp. II). Moreover, soil with high organic C (Exp. II) had higher CH4 emissions. In contrast to CH4 emissions, N2O emissions were negligible during the rice-growing season. The global warming potential (GWP) was highest at high temperature with rice straw incorporation compared with low temperature without rice straw. On the other hand, the high temperature significantly increased spikelet sterility and reduced grain yield (p?<?0.05).

Conclusions

Elevated temperature increased GWP while decreased rice yield. This suggests that global warming may result in a double negative effect: higher emissions and lower yields.  相似文献

Background and aims

The rice production is experiencing a shift from conventionally seedling-transplanted (TPR) to direct-seeded (DSR) cropping systems in Southeast Asia. Besides the difference in rice crop establishment, water regime is typically characterized as water-saving moist irrigation for DSR and flooding-midseason drainage-reflooding and moist irrigation for TPR fields, respectively. A field experiment was conducted to quantify methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from the DSR and TPR rice paddies in southeast China.

Methods

Seasonal measurements of CH4 and N2O fluxes from the DSR and TPR plots were simultaneously taken by static chamber-GC technique.

Results

Seasonal fluxes of CH4 averaged 1.58 mg m?2 h?1 and 1.02 mg m?2 h?1 across treatments in TPR and DSR rice paddies, respectively. Compared with TPR cropping systems, seasonal N2O emissions from DSR cropping systems were increased by 49 % and 46 % for the plots with or without N application, respectively. The emission factors of N2O were estimated to be 0.45 % and 0.69 % of N application, with a background emission of 0.65 and 0.95 kg N2O-N ha?1 under the TPR and DSR cropping regimes, respectively. Rice biomass and grain yield were significantly greater in the DSR than in the TPR cropping systems. The net global warming potential (GWP) of CH4 and N2O emissions were comparable between the two cropping systems, while the greenhouse gas intensity (GHGI) was significantly lower in the DSR than in the TPR cropping systems.

Conclusions

Higher grain yield, comparable GWP, and lower GHGI suggest that the DSR instead of conventional TPR rice cropping regime would weaken the radiative forcing of rice production in terms of per unit of rice grain yield in China, and DSR rice cropping regime could be a promising rice development alternative in mainland China.  相似文献

Background and aims

Winter cover crop cultivation during the fallow season has been strongly recommended in mono-rice paddy soil to improve soil quality, but its impact in increasing the greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions during rice cultivation when applied as green manure has not been extensively studied. In order to recommend a preferable cover crop which can increase soil productivity and suppress GHG emission impact in paddy soil, the effect of winter cover crop addition on rice yield and total global warming potential (GWP) was studied during rice cultivation.

Methods

Two cover crops (Chinese milk vetch, Astragalus sinicus L., hereafter vetch, and rye, Secale cerealis) having different carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratios were cultivated during the rice fallow season. The fresh above-ground biomasses of vetch [25 Mg fresh weight (FW) ha?1, moisture content (MC) 86.9 %, C/N ratio 14.8] and rye (29 Mg rye FW ha?1, MC 78.0 %, C/N ratio 64.3) were incorporated as green manure 1 week before rice transplanting (NPK + vetch, and NPK + rye). The NPK treatment was installed for comparison as the control. During the rice cultivation, methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) gases were collected simultaneously once a week using the closed-chamber method, and carbon dioxide (CO2) flux was estimated using the soil C balance analysis. Total GWP impact was calculated as CO2 equivalents by multiplying the seasonal CH4, CO2, and N2O fluxes by 25, 1, and 298, respectively.

Results

Methane mainly covered 79–81 % of the total GWP, followed by CO2 (14–17 %), but the N2O contribution was very small (2–5 %) regardless of the treatment. Seasonal CH4 fluxes significantly increased to 61 and 122 % by vetch and rye additions, respectively, compared to that of the NPK treatment. Similarly, the estimated seasonal CO2 fluxes increased at about 197 and 266 % in the vetch and rye treatments, respectively, compared with the NPK control plots. Based on these results, the total GWP increased to 163 and 221 % with vetch and rye applications, respectively, over the control treatment. Rice productivity was significantly increased with the application of green manure due to nutrient supply; however, vetch was more effective. Total GWP per grain yield was similar with the vetch (low C/N ratio) and NPK treatments, but significantly increased with the rye (high C/N ratio) application, mainly due to its higher CH4 emission characteristic and lower rice productivity increase.

Conclusions

A low C/N ratio cover crop, such as vetch, may be a more desirable green manure to reduce total GWP per grain yield and to improve rice productivity.  相似文献

Background and aims

Iron toxicity decreases rice (Oryza sativa) grain yield especially in acid soils after flooding. Our aim was to establish a high-throughput screening technique using nutrient solution culture for identifying Fe-toxicity-tolerant genotypes.

Methods

Varying levels of Fe, pH, and chelators in Yoshida nutrient solution culture were tested to maintain sufficient Fe2+ concentration over time to optimize the severity of Fe toxicity stress for distinguishing between a tolerant (Azucena) and sensitive (IR64) genotype. The optimized solution was tested on 20 diverse genotypes in the greenhouse, with measurement of leaf bronzing scores and plant growth characteristics at the seedling stage. The same 20 genotypes were grown to maturity in a field with natural Fe toxicity stress, with measurement of seedling-stage leaf bronzing scores and grain yield to determine their inter-relationship.

Results

Optimized nutrient solution conditions were 300 mg L?1 Fe supplied as Fe2+ at pH 4.0 with a 1:2 molar ratio of Fe:EDTA, which maintained sufficient Fe2+ stress over 5 days. The highest correlation of nutrient solution phenotypic data with field grain yield was found with leaf bronzing scores at 4 weeks, with a Pearson r of 0.628 for simple association and a Spearman corrected r of 0.610 for rank association (P?<?0.01) using 20 diverse rice genotypes with proven Fe toxicity tolerance reaction. The Leaf bronzing scores at 4 weeks in nutrient culture solution were also found highly correlated with LBS under natural field stress after 8 weeks that had highest correlation with grain yield under stress.

Conclusion

This culture solution-based standardized screening technique can be used in plant breeding programs as a high-throughput technique to identify genotypes tolerant to Fe toxicity.  相似文献

Key message

A stable QTL that may be used in marker-assisted selection in wheat breeding programs was detected for yield, yield components and drought tolerance-related traits in spring wheat association mapping panel.

Abstract

Genome-wide association mapping has become a widespread method of quantitative trait locus (QTL) identification for many crop plants including wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Its benefit over traditional bi-parental mapping approaches depends on the extent of linkage disequilibrium in the mapping population. The objectives of this study were to determine linkage disequilibrium decay rate and population structure in a spring wheat association mapping panel (n = 285–294) and to identify markers associated with yield and yield components, morphological, phenological, and drought tolerance-related traits. The study was conducted under fully irrigated and rain-fed conditions at Greeley, CO, USA and Melkassa, Ethiopia in 2010 and 2011 (five total environments). Genotypic data were generated using diversity array technology markers. Linkage disequilibrium decay rate extended over a longer genetic distance for the D genome (6.8 cM) than for the A and B genomes (1.7 and 2.0 cM, respectively). Seven subpopulations were identified with population structure analysis. A stable QTL was detected for grain yield on chromosome 2DS both under irrigated and rain-fed conditions. A multi-trait region significant for yield and yield components was found on chromosome 5B. Grain yield QTL on chromosome 1BS co-localized with harvest index QTL. Vegetation indices shared QTL with harvest index on chromosome 1AL and 5A. After validation in relevant genetic backgrounds and environments, QTL detected in this study for yield, yield components and drought tolerance-related traits may be used in marker-assisted selection in wheat breeding programs.  相似文献

Key message

A novel QTL for grain number, GN4-1, was identified and fine-mapped to an ~ 190-kb region on the long arm of rice chromosome 4.

Abstract

Rice grain yield is primarily determined by three components: number of panicles per plant, grain number per panicle and grain weight. Among these traits, grain number per panicle is the major contributor to grain yield formation and is a crucial trait for yield improvement. In this study, we identified a major quantitative trait locus (QTL) responsible for rice grain number on chromosome 4, designated GN4-1 (a QTL for Grain Number on chromosome 4), using advanced segregating populations derived from the crosses between an elite indica cultivar ‘Zhonghui 8006’ (ZH8006) and a japonica rice ‘Wuyunjing 8’ (WYJ8). GN4-1 was delimited to an ~ 190-kb region on chromosome 4. The genetic effect of GN4-1 was estimated using a pair of near-isogenic lines. The GN4-1 gene from WYJ8 promoted accumulation of cytokinins in the inflorescence and increased grain number per panicle by ~ 17%. More importantly, introduction of the WYJ8 GN4-1 gene into ZH8006 increased grain yield by ~ 14.3 and ~ 11.5% in the experimental plots in 2014 and 2015, respectively. In addition, GN4-1 promoted thickening of the culm and may enhance resistance to lodging. These results demonstrate that GN4-1 is a potentially valuable gene for improvement of yield and lodging resistance in rice breeding.

Background and aims

Chinese milk vetch (Astragalus sinicus L. CMV), a leguminous cover crop, has been shown to provide N benefits to rice crops, but little is known about the pathway of incorporated CMV and its N dynamics. In this study, effects of CMV under different application treatments (incorporated alone, applied in conjunction with urea fertilizer and applied with ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.)) on N dynamics, rice yields and N uptake were investigated and compared with those of chemical fertilizer (CF) and no fertilizer (NF) in a double rice cropping system.

Methods

Nitrogen release from incorporated CMV residue was quantified by using a bag method. Nitrogen dynamics of CMV were evaluated by using 15N-labelled fresh CMV tops and compared with those of CF (15N-labelled urea).

Results

CMV residue decomposition pattern and its N release pattern followed a single exponential decay model, with 87.8–89.5 % of the applied CMV decomposed and 95.1–96.1 % of the original N released in the double rice season (177 days after fertilizer application). CMV treatments had higher rice N uptake efficiency than CF (39.2–51.3 % vs. 29.9 %) at the sum of early and late rice seasons. Rice yield, N accumulation and mineral fertilizer efficiency in CMV treated treatments were higher than those in CF. After two consecutive rice seasons the amounts of residual N remained in the soil were higher in the CMV treated fields than in CF (29.4–33.2 % vs. 14.1 %).

Conclusions

CMV can be considered an efficient N source alternative to chemical fertilizer in double rice cropping systems.  相似文献

Background and Aims

The accumulation of cadmium and lead in rice (Oryza sativa L.) grains is a potential threat to human health. In this study, the effect of selenium fertilization on the uptake and translocation of cadmium and lead in rice plants was investigated.

Methods

Rice plants were cultivated using cadmium and lead contaminated soils with selenium addition at three concentrations (0, 0.5 and 1 mg kg?1). At maturity, plants were harvested, and element concentrations in rice tissues were analyzed by using ICP-MS.

Results

Selenium application significantly increased selenium accumulation in rice grain, and markedly decreased cadmium and lead concentrations in rice tissues. In brown rice grains, selenium application reduced cadmium concentrations by 44.4 %, but had no significant effect on lead accumulation. Selenium application significantly decreased metal mobility in soils, at 0.5 mg kg?1 treatment, the translocation factor of cadmium and lead from soil to iron plaque decreased by 71 and 33 % respectively.

Conclusions

The mechanism of selenium mitigating of heavy metal accumulation in rice could be decreasing metal bioavailability in soil. Selenium fertilization could be an effective and feasible method to enrich selenium and reduce cadmium levels in brown rice.  相似文献

Aims

A pot study spanning four consecutive crop seasons was conducted to compare the effects of successive rice straw biochar/rice straw amendments on C sequestration and soil fertility in rice/wheat rotated paddy soil.

Methods

We adopted 4.5 t ha?1, 9.0 t ha?1 biochar and 3.75 t ha?1 straw for each crop season with an identical dose of NPK fertilizers.

Results

We found no major losses of biochar-C over the 2-year experimental period. Obvious reductions in CH4 emission were observed from rice seasons under the biochar application, despite the fact that the biochar brought more C into the soil than the straw. N2O emissions with biochar were similar to the controls without additives over the 2-year experimental period. Biochar application had positive effects on crop growth, along with positive effects on nutrient (N, P, K, Ca and Mg) uptake by crop plants and the availability of soil P, K, Ca and Mg. High levels of biochar application over the course of the crop rotation suppressed NH3 volatilization in the rice season, but stimulated it in the wheat season.

Conclusions

Converting straw to biochar followed by successive application to soil is viable for soil C sequestration, CH4 mitigation, improvements of soil and crop productivity. Biochar soil amendment influences NH3 volatilization differently in the flooded rice and upland wheat seasons, respectively.  相似文献

Aim

In rice, the top two leaves are the major carbohydrate source during grain filling. Physiological performance of these leaves under salinity may allow estimate stress-induced yield loss.

Methods

Greenhouse grown rice plants (cv. Taipei 309) were subjected to 10 and 20 mM NaCl stress levels from germination till maturity. Plant development was measured at the flowering stage and yield parameters were quantified after complete ripening of panicles.

Results

Gas exchange in the main source leaves were not significantly affected by any of the stress levels. However, growth parameters as well as total metabolizable carbohydrates content, chlorophyll content (CCI), maximal efficiency of PSII photochemistry in dark-adapted state (F v/F m) and lipid peroxidation were significantly affected. Rice yield, measured as total panicle production, declined to 78 and 21 % of controls in 10 and 20 mM NaCl stress, respectively. Stress-induced yield loss was positively related with the decline in CCI, F v/F m and K+/Na+ ratio as well as with the increase in lipid peroxidation and total soluble carbohydrate contents.

Conclusions

Though the stress levels used in this work are below what is considered the minimal critical threshold of toxicity for rice, they induce significant negative effects on plant development and yield, when present along the whole plant life cycle.  相似文献

Key message

By comparing 195 varieties in eight trials, this study assesses nitrogen use efficiency improvement in high and low nitrogen conditions in European winter wheat over the last 25 years.

Abstract

In a context where European agriculture practices have to deal with environmental concerns and nitrogen (N) fertiliser cost, nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) has to be improved. This study assessed genetic progress in winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) NUE. Two hundred and twenty-five European elite varieties were tested in four environments under two levels of N. Global genetic progress was assessed on additive genetic values and on genotype × N interaction, covering 25 years of European breeding. To avoid sampling bias, quality, precocity and plant height were added as covariates in the analyses when needed. Genotype × environment interactions were highly significant for all the traits studied to such an extent that no additive genetic effect was detected on N uptake. Genotype × N interactions were significant for yield, grain protein content (GPC), N concentration in straw, N utilisation, and NUE. Grain yield improvement (+0.45 % year?1) was independent of the N treatment. GPC was stable, thus grain nitrogen yield was improved (+0.39 % year?1). Genetic progress on N harvest index (+0.12 % year?1) and on N concentration in straw (?0.52 % year?1) possibly revealed improvement in N remobilisation. There has been an improvement of NUE additive genetic value (+0.33 % year?1) linked to better N utilisation (+0.20 % year?1). Improved yield stability was detected as a significant improvement of NUE in low compared to high N conditions. The application of these results to breeding programs is discussed.  相似文献

GWAS on multi-environment data identified genomic regions associated with trade-offs for grain weight and grain number.

Abstract

Grain yield (GY) can be dissected into its components thousand grain weight (TGW) and grain number (GN), but little has been achieved in assessing the trade-off between them in spring wheat. In the present study, the Wheat Association Mapping Initiative (WAMI) panel of 287 elite spring bread wheat lines was phenotyped for GY, GN, and TGW in ten environments across different wheat growing regions in Mexico, South Asia, and North Africa. The panel genotyped with the 90 K Illumina Infinitum SNP array resulted in 26,814 SNPs for genome-wide association study (GWAS). Statistical analysis of the multi-environmental data for GY, GN, and TGW observed repeatability estimates of 0.76, 0.62, and 0.95, respectively. GWAS on BLUPs of combined environment analysis identified 38 loci associated with the traits. Among them four loci—6A (85 cM), 5A (98 cM), 3B (99 cM), and 2B (96 cM)—were associated with multiple traits. The study identified two loci that showed positive association between GY and TGW, with allelic substitution effects of 4% (GY) and 1.7% (TGW) for 6A locus and 0.2% (GY) and 7.2% (TGW) for 2B locus. The locus in chromosome 6A (79–85 cM) harbored a gene TaGW2-6A. We also identified that a combination of markers associated with GY, TGW, and GN together explained higher variation for GY (32%), than the markers associated with GY alone (27%). The marker-trait associations from the present study can be used for marker-assisted selection (MAS) and to discover the underlying genes for these traits in spring wheat.
