Of a sample of 42 gram-negative Hg-resistant bacteria, three (a Pseudomonas fluorescens, a Klebsiella sp. and a Citrobacter sp.) contained translocatable elements conferring resistance to Hg2+ (all three) and to Hg2+ and phenylmercuric acetate (P. fluorescens). The discovery of transposable phenylmercuric acetate resistance extends the range of known resistance "transposons" from heavy metals and antibiotics to organometallic compounds.  相似文献

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) convert biomass into electricity by the metabolic activity of microorganisms and are also used for remediation and water treatment. Power output was compared for a dual chambered membrane MFC using either E. coli or two Yamuna river samples, Yamuna (before the Sangam region)--slow flow (sample 1) and Sangam region--fast flow (sample 2). E. coli and the two river water samples 1 and 2 gave a maximum voltage of 779, 463 and 415 mV respectively. Using E. coli the maximum power density obtained with a 100 omega resistor was 220.66 mW/cm2 and the highest power generated 6068.41 mW. The results demonstrate E. coli, river sample 1 and river sample 2 have a comparable coulombic efficiency of 85.2, 71 and 77% respectively when using 0.4% sucrose as substrate. The decrease in chemical oxidative demand of all river water samples using MFC technology demonstrates efficient remediation of inland water.  相似文献

Abstract

In this study, the fractionation and ecotoxic potential of Cr, Ni, Cu and Pb in water and sediments of the river Yamuna (Delhi stretch) is presented. The river water is used for various purposes such as irrigation, industrial, domestic and drinking. The investigations suggest that the availability of metals in water follows the sequence Ni>Cr>Pb>Cu whereas a different pattern (Pb>Cu>Ni>Cr) is observed in sediments. Statistically significant spatial variations are indicated by two-way ANOVA in different geochemical forms of the metals and physicochemical parameters of water and sediments of the river Yamuna. Principal component analysis (PCA) suggests a similar source for all four metals probably from the sewage from municipal drains. PCA also indicates some independent sources of Cu and Pb. The hot spots were identified using hierarchical cluster analysis considering bioavailable forms of the metals in water and sediments as objects and the sampling sites as variables. Risk assessment code analysis indicates that metals generally pose medium to high risk at different sites. However, at a few locations either Ni or Pb cross the level of very high ecological risk.  相似文献

Mercury is a toxic substance that is widely distributed throughout the hydrosphere, biosphere, and lithosphere. Mine waste environments and mine waters support a wide diversity of microbial life. The microbial ecology of environments where mine waters are polluted with heavy metals is poorly understood. Here, we describe the features of bacteria in mercury-contaminated gold panning ponds in a small-scale gold mine (Geita) near Lake Victoria, Tanzania using energy filtering transmission electron microscopy (EF-TEM) and scanning transmission electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (STEM-EDX). Most bacteria in the panning pond showed thick exopolysaccharides (EPSs), and many clay minerals attached onto the surface of EPSs. The clay minerals and EPSs might act as protective layers for the bacteria against toxic materials. The clay minerals were composed of smectite, halloysite, and kaolinite associated with calcite and goethite. Scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy indicated that the bulk soil samples contained abundant Si, Al, K, Ca, and Fe with heavy metals such as Au, Ti, and Ag. The results indicate that Hg pollution from panning ponds is caused by not only volatilization of Hg from Au-Hg amalgams, but Hg is also released into the air as dust mixed with dry fine clays, suggesting high long-term environmental risks. Mercury-resistant bacteria associated with clay minerals may have a significant effect on the weathering processes of the ore during long-term bioremediation. The clay mineral complexes on the surface of bacterial cell walls are a stimulator for Hg-resistant bacterial growth in mud ponds contaminated with the Au-Hg materials.  相似文献

Environmental bacteria belonging to various families were isolated from polluted water collected from ten different sites in Tunisia. Sites were chosen near industrial and urban areas known for their high degree of pollution. The aim of this study was to investigate cross-resistance between heavy metals (HM), i.e., silver, mercury and copper (Ag, Hg, and Cu), and antibiotics. In an initial screening, 80 isolates were selected on ampicillin, and 39 isolates, retained for further analysis, could grow on a Tris-buffered mineral medium with gluconate as carbon source. Isolates were identified based on their 16S rRNA gene sequence. Results showed the prevalence of antibiotic resistance genes, especially all isolates harbored the blaTEM gene. Some of them (15.38%) harbored blaSHV. Moreover, several were even ESBLs and MBLs-producers, which can threaten the human health. On the other hand, 92.30%, 56.41%, and 51.28% of the isolates harbored the heavy metals resistance genes silE, cusA, and merA, respectively. These genes confer resistance to silver, copper, and mercury. A cross-resistance between antibiotics and heavy metals was detected in 97.43% of our isolates.  相似文献

The River Yamuna emerges from Saptarishi Kund, Yamunotri and merge with River Ganges at Allahabad, India. Anthropogenic stress has affected the water quality of the river Yamuna drastically in the stretch traversing Delhi and its satellite towns (National Capital Region, NCR). In the present study, effect of water quality on the microbial life in the River Yamuna was analyzed using ciliate communities (Protista, Ciliophora) as bio-indicators. Water samples were collected from six sampling sites chosen according to the levels of pollution along the river and water quality was analysed using standard physicochemical factors. As the river traverses Delhi NCR, water quality deteriorates considerably as indicated by the Water Quality Index at the selected sampling sites. Seventy-four ciliate species representing nine classes were recorded. Based on the Shannon diversity index, maximum species diversity was found at the point where the river enters Delhi. The saprobity index showed the river water was beta-mesosaprobic when the river enters Delhi and alpha-mesosaprobic at downstream sites after the first major drain outfall. Significant relationship between the spatial variation in ciliate communities and abiotic parameters indicate that ciliates can be used as effective bioindicators of pollution in the River Yamuna.  相似文献

The response of the planktonic, sediment, and epilithic bacterial communities to increasing concentrations of heavy metals was determined in a polluted river. None of the communities demonstrated a pollution-related effect on bacterial numbers (viable and total), heterotrophic activity, resistance to Pb or Cu, or species diversity as determined by either the Shannon-Wiener diversity index or rarefaction. The lack of correlation between concentrations of heavy metals and resistance in the sediment bacterial community was investigated and found to be due at least in part to the high pH of the river water and the resultant reduction in heavy metal toxicity. The three different communities demonstrated characteristic profiles based on the relative abundances of bacterial strains grouped according to functional similarities.  相似文献

为了研究安徽省部分地区水环境中重元素污染的状况,作者利用同步辐射X射线荧光,对于采自安徽省境内4个地区的日本沼虾(Macrobranchium nipponensis)的尾扇样品进行重元素分析,测定结果表明:它反映了4个地区的水体中沼虾体内重元素含量的差别,这显示出沼虾体内重元素的含量随着水环境的不同而改变,从而体现了本实验方法对水环境污染的指示意义。在实验中我们证实,与一般检测样本重元素的方法相比,同步辐射X射线荧光分析的方法的灵敏度大大提高,样品处理也更加简便。  相似文献

Although certain pollutants can be biologically degraded by microorganisms, rendering their impact short-term, others can not be impaired, such that their effect persists. The present study evaluates the effectiveness of using a field-collected aphid, Aphis gossypii, as a bio-indicator for heavy metals in tomato farms in Riyadh and Hafar Al-Batin, Saudi Arabia. Heavy metals were selected (Cd, Cu, Zn, and Pb) and measured for comparative screening in field-collected plants, soil, and aphids using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Field-collected aphids from both studied regions were identified as Aphis gossypii. In Riyadh, there was no significant difference observed for Cd, Cu, and Zn for all experimental samples, while, Pb was showed differences among samples especially tomato leaves None of the studied samples in Hafar Al-Batin were showed statistically significant differences in Cd, in reverse to significant differences in the other heavy metals. Comparing concentrations of selected heavy metals between the two studied regions was showed that neither region showed a significant difference in heavy metals except for Cu. This study demonstrates that tomato leaf samples showed the highest concentrations of most studied heavy metals, followed by soil, then aphids. Aphids were utilized as a bio-indicator of heavy metals in the studied regions.  相似文献

This study aimed to determine the pattern of antibiotic and heavy metal resistance in Gram-negative bacteria isolated from five different sites in the Seyhan Dam Lake and Seyhan River in Adana, Turkey. The susceptibility of 268 isolates to 16 different antibiotics and five heavy metals was investigated by agar diffusion and dilution methods, respectively. The most common species isolated from the samples were Aeromonas hydrophila (17.5 %), Aeromonas caviae (8.9 %) and Citrobacter freundii (8.9 %). There was a high incidence of resistance to ampicillin (80.2 %), streptomycin (71.6 %) and cefazolin (60.4 %). Multiple antibiotic resistance indices ranged from 0.2 to 0.81, suggesting exposure to antibiotic contamination. The isolates showed tolerance to different concentrations of heavy metals. These results indicate that antibiotic and heavy metal resistance among the Seyhan Dam Lake and Seyhan River bacteria may pose a risk to the fish population and public health. At the same time, the finding in the aquatic environments of different combinations of resistance genes suggests their involvement in the spread of multidrug-resistant strains.  相似文献

Abstract

The aim of the present study was to investigate the potential of Mentha aquatica L. for phytoremediation of water contaminated with heavy metals and fecal pathogens from Bosna river. The water was treated with M. aquatica for 5, 10, and 15 days consecutively after which it was analyzed for the various physicochemical and microbiological parameters.

The initial concentration of cadmium (Cd) ranged from 3.644 to 6.108?µg/l, while lead (Pb) varied between 0.1 and 1.386?µg/l. After treatment, M. aquatica accumulated significant amounts of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) with the highest removal rates of 96.49% for Cd and 45.72% for Pb. Values of several physicochemical parameters were decreased after 15 days treatment period.

All water samples were analyzed for enumeration of aerobic heterotrophic bacteria, total coliforms, and fecal coliforms by the membrane filtration. Removal efficiency was greater than 80% for microbiological parameters. The concentration of heavy metals was determined in different plant parts and subsequently, the translocation factor was determined. In M. aquatica plant parts, concentrations of Pb and Cd were increased after 15 days of treatment. Our results demonstrated that M. aquatica could be good candidates for the removal of fecal pathogens and heavy metals present in surface water.  相似文献

德兴铜矿尾矿重金属污染对土壤中微生物多样性的影响   总被引:12,自引:2,他引:10  
【目的】为更好地了解重金属污染与微生物多样性之间的相互作用关系,以江西德兴铜矿4#尾砂库为研究对象,采集野外实地样品共16件进行分析(包括尾砂样品以及周围农田和菜地土壤样品)。【方法】一方面对样品中可培养异养细菌进行平板计数,一方面采用变性梯度凝胶电泳(Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis,DGGE)对样品中可培养和不可培养微生物分子生态多样性进行研究;同时采用PCA(Principle component analysis)方法分析样品理化性质、重金属及主要元素与可培养细菌数量及微生物多样性之间的相互关系。【结果】元素分析结果表明该尾矿区样品受到不同程度重金属Cu、Cd、Zn、Ni、Pb和Cr的污染;可培养异养细菌在尾砂样品中数量最少,在菜地和农田土壤样品中有明显增加;多样性指数(Shannon-Weaver index H)计算结果发现H最大值出现在距离尾矿中等距离、重金属浓度在中等程度的样品中。PCA分析结果表明可培养异养菌数量与理化性质如有机碳、有机质、含水率等相关性较大,重金属影响不明显;而多样性指数H除与上述理化性质相关性较大外,还受到重金属Ag、Zn、As、Pb、Ni、Cr等的影响,而在样品中含量普遍比较高的重金属如Cu、Cd等并不成为影响微生物多样性的主要因素。【结论】从这些长期受重金属污染的野外实地样品来看,以上结果说明不同重金属浓度对微生物多样性的影响可能并不是实验室研究的简单的线性关系。  相似文献

Heavy metals in aquatic macrophytes drifting in a large river   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
Macrophytes drifting throughout the water column in the Detroit River were collected monthly from May to October 1985 to estimate the quantities of heavy metals being transported to Lake Erie by the plants. Most macrophytes (80–92% by weight) drifted at the water surface. Live submersed macrophytes made up the bulk of each sample. The most widely distributed submersed macrophyte in the river, American wildcelery (Vallisneria americana), occurred most frequently in the drift. A total of 151 tonnes (ash-free dry weight) of macrophytes drifted out of the Detroit River from May to October. The drift was greatest (37 tonnes) in May. Concentrations of heavy metals were significantly higher in macrophytes drifting in the river than in those growing elsewhere in unpolluted waters. Annually, a maximum of 2 796 kg (eight heavy metals combined) were transported into Lake Erie by drifting macrophytes. The enrichment of all metals was remarkably high (range: 4 000 × to 161 000 × ) in macrophytes, relative to their concentration in water of the Detroit River. The distributions of heavy metals in the Langat River were studied for a period of six months between September 1984 and February 1985. Heavy metals such as arsenic, cadmium, cerium, cobalt, chromium, caesium, lanthanum, rubidium, antimony, scandium, thorium and zinc were determined in water, suspended materials and sediment samples from the Langat River by neutron activation and atomic absorption spectrometry. The concentrations of arsenic, cadmium, cerium, cobalt, scandium, antimony, and zinc were generally highest in the suspended materials, whereas the concentrations of chromium, rubidium and thorium were always highest in the sediments: Arsenic concentrations in the river were slightly higher than the natural concentration, while other elements were generally at their natural concentration levels. The use of arsenical herbicides in plantations along the river could be a source of arsenic pollution.  相似文献

Instances of Soil and Crop Heavy Metal Contamination in China   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Both general and specific investigations of soil and crop heavy metal contamination were carried out across China. The former was focused mainly on Cd, Hg, As, Pb, and Cr in soils and vegetables in suburbs of four large cities; the latter investigated Cd levels in both soils and rice or wheat in contaminated areas throughout 15 provinces of the country. The results indicated that levels of Cd, Hg, and Pb in soils and some in crops were greater than the Governmental Standards (Chinese government limits for soil and crop heavy metal contents). Soil Cd ranged from 0.46 to 1.04?mg kg?1, on average, in the four cities and was as high as 145?mg kg?1 in soil and 7?mg kg?1 in rice in the wide area of the country. Among different species, tuberous vegetables seemed to accumulate a larger portion of heavy metals than leafy and fruit vegetables, except celery. For both rice and wheat, two staple food crops, the latter seemed to have much higher concentrations of Cd and Pb than the former grown in the same area. Furthermore, the endosperm of both wheat and rice crops had the highest portion of Cd and Cr. Rice endosperm and wheat chaff accumulated the highest Pb, although the concentrations of all three metals were variable in different parts of the grains. For example, 8.3, 6.9, 1.4, and 0.6?mg kg?1 of Pb were found in chaff, cortex, embryo, and endosperm of wheat compared with 0.11, 0.65, 0.71, and 0.19?mg kg?1 in the same parts of rice, respectively. Untreated sewage water irrigation was the major cause of increasing soil and crop metals. Short periods of the sewage water irrigation increased individual metals in soils by 2 to 80% and increased metals in crops by 14 to 209%. Atmospheric deposition, industrial or municipal wastes, sewage sludge improperly used as fertilizers, and metal-containing phosphate fertilizers played an important role as well in some specific areas.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Metal—humate interactions in aqueous and terrestrial ecosystems control the speciation of trace metals and hence, their bioavailability and toxicity. The present study investigated the complexation interactions of copper, cadmium and lead, in their divalent states, with humic acids extracted from three different sources: the treated sewage from a treatment plant, Yamuna river bed sediment, and Yamuna river flood plain soil, all at Okhla, Delhi, employing ion selective electrode potentiometry. The conditional stability constants of the complexes were computed from Scatchard plots. The influences of the two important metal speciation factors, viz., pH and ionic strength of the reaction medium on the conditional stability constants were ascertained by investigating the reactions under three different pH: 5.0, 6.0 and 7.0 and three different ionic strengths: 0.01, 0.03 and 0.1. Stabilities of metal—humic acid (HA) complexes follow the order: Cu-HA > Pb-HA > Cd-HA for humic acids from any single source and are found to increase with a rise in pH and fall in a ionic strength of the medium. The humic acids extracted from the soil and the sediment emerged as stronger complexing agents, as compared to that extracted from sewage.  相似文献

Improper disposal of domestic sewage and effluents from drug manufacturing units for several years has resulted in the accumulation of pollutants in Musi river sediments. There were no studies carried out before to quantify the antibiotic resistance in this river, despite the fact that its sediments are loaded with antibiotics. The present study investigated the relationship between the proliferation of ciprofloxacin resistant culture with the occurrence of fluoroquinolone and heavy metals in sediments of Musi River. The fluoroquinolones concentration in river sediments were observed in high concentration (13336.4 ng/g) and were found to be positively correlated with the occurrence of ciprofloxacin resistant bacteria (r = 0.386 to 0.675, p < 0.05). The occurrence of heavy metals was also in positive correlation with the distribution of antibiotic resistant bacteria in the river (r = 0.454 to 0.881, p < 0.05). This study indicated the spread of antibiotic resistance in polluted river sediments that might pose a serious threat to public health as the river water is used for irrigation, drinking, and recreational purposes; and needs an immediate risk assessment and mitigation strategies.  相似文献

Abstract

Mining activities have introduced various heavy metals and metalloids to surrounding soil environments, causing adverse impacts to the ecological environment system. The extremely high concentration of various heavy metals and metalloids make the Xikuangshan (Hunan, China) an excellent model to assess their ecological risk. In this study, the soil samples from 26 locations of different land use methods in four areas (smelting area, road nearby ore, mining area, and ore tailing area) in Xikuangshan with different levels of various heavy metals and metalloids (Sb, As, Pb, and Cd) were analyzed; in addition, the index of geo-accumulation and the potential ecological risk index were used to evaluate ecological risk. The results showed that the average contents of Sb, As, Pb, and Cd in all soil samples were 4368.222?mg·kg?1, 40.722?mg·kg?1, 248.013?mg·kg?1, and 40.941?mg·kg?1, respectively, implying serious contamination of compound pollution of heavy metals in soil. The concentration of heavy metals in soil among smelting area, road nearby ore, mining area, and ore tailing area showed significant distribution characteristics of region because different mining activities such as smelting, mining, transportation, and stacking caused different pollution intensity. Moreover, the contents of Sb in soil samples decreased successively in residue field, wasteland, forestland, sediment, grassland, and vegetable field, and the contents of Sb in vegetable-field and ecological restoration grassland were relatively low, which indicate that the method of grassland ecological restoration is an effective method to control antimony pollution in soil. The results of ecological risk assessment showed that the antimony mining area was seriously polluted by Sb, As, Pb, and Cd, and had strong ecological risk, and Sb and Cd were the most important pollution factors, which indicated that the pollution of Sb and Cd should be a major concern of relevant departments of environment and health.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the level of contamination and genotoxic impact through micronucleus assay and histopathology in Wallago attu and Cirrhinus mrigala procured from the polluted site of the River Chenab at industrial and sewage waste disposal. The water sample was found viciously contaminated with heavy metals i.e. Ni, Cr, Mn, Co, Pb, Hg, Zn, Sn, Cu while all other physio-chemical variables crossed the suggested limits of WHO. The heavy metals load induced histopathological alterations were correlated to environmental degradation and the productivity of this biological system. W. attu and C. mrigala harvested from contaminated sites of the river indicated higher intensity of DNA damage through micronucleus induction and nuclear abnormalities with 5.46 ± 0.17, 1.23 ± 0.08 and 4.2 ± 0.11, 0.4 ± 0.04‰ respectively. Muscle sections of W. attu and C. mrigala harvested from the polluted section of river demonstrated the necrosis, degeneration of muscle fibers, intra-fibular edema and release of the blood into the tissues due to the bursting of blocked of the blood vessels. Dermal layers showed degeneration of the collagen bundles those were found loose or collapsed in some regions. Photomicrography also revealed vacuolar degeneration in muscle tissues and atrophy of muscle bundles. Intra fibular edema and splitting of muscle fibers were also seen along with bioaccumulation of toxicants. W. attu showed maximum incidence of alterations with highest histopathological alteration index related to environmental degradation. Control fish samples showed normal muscle tissues with normal equally spaced muscle bundles and myotomes.  相似文献

Metallothioneins (MTs) are low-molecular-weight, cysteine-rich metal-binding proteins found in a wide variety of organisms including bacteria, fungi and all eukaryotic plant and animal species. MTs bind essential and non-essential heavy metals. In mammalian cells MT genes are highly inducible by many heavy metals including Zn, Cd, Hg, and Cu. Aquatic systems are contaminated by different pollutants, including metals, as a result of man's activities. Bivalve molluscs are known to accumulate high concentrations of heavy metals in their tissue and are widely used as bioindicators for pollution in marine and freshwater environments, with MTs frequently used as a valuable marker of metal contamination. We here describe the MT isoform gene expression patterns of marine and freshwater molluscs and fish species after Cd or Zn contamination. Contamination was carried out at a river site polluted by a zinc ore extraction plant or in the laboratory at low, environmentally relevant metal concentrations. A comparison for each species based on the accumulated MT protein levels often shows discrepancies between gene expression and protein level. In addition, several differences observed in the pattern of MT gene expression between mollusc and mammalian species enable us to discuss and challenge a model for the induction of MT gene expression.  相似文献
