The frequency demultiplication hypothesis (FDH) posits that circannual rhythms are generated from circadian cycles by frequency transformation to the lower-frequency rhythm. To test the FDH, we determined the periods of the circannual body mass and estrous cycles of golden-mantled ground squirrels with circadian locomotor activity rhythms entrained to 23-, 24-, or 25-hr days (T-cycles). Circannual period length did not differ among squirrels entrained to the different T-cycles; intergroup ranges were 298-314 days and 303-312 days, respectively, for body mass and estrus. These results are not consistent with the FDH and suggest instead that separate mechanisms generate circadian and circannual rhythms. In ground squirrels the circannual system influences circadian organization, but a reciprocal influence of circadian on circannual rhythms has yet to be demonstrated.  相似文献

The efficacy of photoperiod as a zeitgeber for entrainment of circannual body weight and estrous rhythms was tested in female golden-mantled ground squirrels maintained for 3 or more years in either a simulated natural photoperiod (SNP) or a fixed LD 14:10 photoperiod (FP). The role of the retinohypothalamic tract--suprachiasmatic nucleus (RHT-SCN) projection in photic entrainment was assessed in animals that sustained destruction of the SCN (SCNX). Circannual rhythms were lengthened by the SNP as compared to the FP. Mean periods (tau's) for neurologically intact animals in the third year of testing were 49.6 +/- 0.3 weeks and 43.1 +/- 1.2 weeks (p less than 0.001) for the SNP and FP groups, respectively; furthermore, 56% and 7% of animals in these groups had tau's not significantly different from 365 days (p less than 0.005), and within-group variability was lower for SNP than for FP squirrels (p less than 0.01). SCNX squirrels differed from animals with the SCN intact (SCNC), as evidenced by higher within-group variability (p less than 0.001); only 29% of SCNX squirrels had tau's not different from 365 days (p less than 0.03 compared to the SCNC group). The coupling between estrous and body weight rhythms that was evident in SCN-intact SNP and FP squirrels was disrupted in SCNX animals. The RHT-SCN pathway is implicated in entrainment and in maintenance of normal phase relations among the several circannual rhythms. In a second experiment, female squirrels were maintained for 2.5 years in an accelerated SNP that compressed two normal annual photocycles into each calendar year. Of 12 squirrels, 3 had tau's that did not differ significantly from 6 months; 6 had tau's equivalent to 12 months; and 3 had tau's significantly different from both 6 months and 12 months. The data suggest that photoperiod is a major zeitgeber for entrainment of golden-mantled ground squirrels circannual rhythms.  相似文献

Summary Pinealectomies and radical sham pinealectomies were performed on adult golden-mantled ground squirrels (Spermophilus lateralis) approximately one month prior to the beginning of the normal winter hibernation season. The cyclic components of the overwintering period and subsequent active season (the rhythms of homeothermy-heterothermy, body mass and testicular function) of the first year were not disrupted in either of the operated groups as compared with the intact animals. In the second year, the initiation of the hibernatory period occurred as usual in all intact, pinealectomized, and sham operated animals, but the pinealectomized group failed to show the progressive increase in the length of heterothermic bouts that was characteristic of the intact and sham-pinealectomized squirrels. The loss of body mass also was accelerated in the pinealectomized squirrels with respect to the intact and sham groups and appeared to be associated with terminal arousal which occurred approximately six weeks earlier in the second year after pinealectomy. Additionally, male squirrels showed a correspondingly early onset of testicular development as compared to the intact and sham operated males.  相似文献

Although many species display endogenous circannual rhythms of biological activity that are synchronized by day length, the specific photoperiodic requirements for synchronizing such rhythms are not established for any species. We tested the hypothesis that the circannual reproductive rhythm of sheep can be synchronized by exposure to just one or two discrete blocks of photoperiodic information each year. Ewes were pinealectomized to prevent their ability to transduce photoperiodic information into altered reproductive neuroendocrine activity. During the 53/4 yr following pinealectomy, specific photoperiodic signals were restored for discrete periods of time via replacement of 24-h patterns of melatonin, the pineal hormone that transmits photic information to the reproductive neuroendocrine axis. The ewes were kept in a 12-mo photoycycle that alternated between short (8L:16D) and long (16L:8D) days every 6 mo and that was 6 mo out of phase with the geophysical year. Pineal-intact control ewes exhibited synchronous annual reproductive cycles. Noninfused pinealectomized control ewes did not exhibit synchronous cycles. Pinealectomized ewes infused with alternating 70-day blocks of short- and long-day patterns of melatonin every 6 mo for the first 21/2 yr of the experiment exhibited synchronous annual reproductive cycles that were 6 mo out of phase with those of ewes maintained outdoors. This synchrony persisted when the frequency of the melatonin treatment was reduced to just one 70-day block of a long-day pattern of melatonin each 365 days. Cycle period was 368 +/- 3 days; standard deviation of the date of onset of reproductive induction averaged only 3 days. Our study provides the first direct evidence that a single block of photoperiodic information a year can synchronize a circannual rhythm.  相似文献

We tested whether prevention of hibernation in ground squirrels by midwinter exposure to high ambient temperatures influenced timing of the spring phase of reproductive maturation and the phase and period of subsequent circannual rhythms of reproduction and body mass. Exposing hibernating adult male Spermophilus lateralis to 30 degrees C for 6 weeks beginning December 4 advanced the timing of testicular recrudescence by 4-5 weeks, compared to controls left at 4 degrees C. Males exposed to 30 degrees C for 6 weeks beginning at the average time of spontaneous end of hibernation (January 15) reached reproductive maturation at a time intermediate to those of controls and of the December 4 experimental group. However, neither the date of the subsequent fall's body mass peak, the date of the next year's reproductive maturation, nor the periods of circannual rhythms of body mass and reproduction differed among groups. Premature interruption of hibernation appears to allow early expression of reproduction, but does not affect the underlying timing mechanism.  相似文献

In golden-mantled ground squirrels, phase angles of entrainment of circadian locomotor activity to a fixed light-dark cycle differ markedly between subjective summer and winter. A change in ambient temperature affects entrainment only during subjective winter when it also produces pronounced effects on body temperature (Tb). It was previously proposed that variations in Tb are causally related to the circannual rhythm in circadian entrainment. To test this hypothesis, wheel-running activity and Tb were monitored for 12 to 14 months in castrated male ground squirrels housed in a 14:10 LD photocycle at 21 degrees C. Animals were treated with testosterone implants that eliminated hibernation and prevented the marked winter decline in Tb; these squirrels manifested circannual changes in circadian entrainment indistinguishable from those of untreated animals. Both groups exhibited pronounced changes in phase angle and alpha of circadian wheel-running and Tb rhythms. Seasonal variation in Tb is not necessary for circannual changes in circadian organization of golden-mantled ground squirrels.  相似文献

Female golden-mantled ground squirrels, maintained in an LD 14:10 photoperiod at 23 degrees C, sustained lesions of the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) or sham operations. Body weight and reproductive status were recorded weekly pre- and postoperatively. Bilateral lesions of the PVN did not eliminate, phase-shift, or otherwise disrupt the circannual rhythms of body mass or reproduction. Absolute levels of body weight were unaffected by PVN ablation. The PVN is not an essential component of the oscillatory system that generates circannual cycles in ground squirrels.  相似文献

Circulating concentrations of prolactin were monitored for 3 yr in intact ewes kept either outdoors or indoors in a fixed equatorial photoperiod (12L:12D) and restricted range of environmental temperatures. Prolactin data were analyzed by spectral analysis. In all ewes kept outdoors, concentrations of prolactin showed robust circannual rhythms with a single predominant period of 359 days. In ewes kept indoors, the range of significant periods varied from 35 to 532 days. Although all ewes kept indoors showed a significant rhythm with a period of 354 days, this clearly was not the predominant period in all. The amplitude of the rhythm in ewes kept indoors was significantly lower (p less than 0.01) than that of ewes kept outdoors. Although the annual rhythm of circulating prolactin typical of ewes kept outdoors was significantly compromised in animals kept under a constant 12L:12D photoperiod and restricted environmental temperature range, there was evidence of an endogenous circannual rhythm.  相似文献

Summary Endogenous circannual rhythms of male golden-mantled ground squirrels (Spermophilus lateralis) exposed to low ambient temperature (6 °C) at various times were compared to the rhythms of a control group kept in a warm room (21 °C) throughout. A 20-week pulse of cold in the spring delayed the subsequent peak body weight and molt offset. However, in the second year after the spring cold pulse, a delay in the rhythm was evident only using peak weight as a phase marker. A 20-week cold pulse in the fall resulted in an earlier peak body weight and earlier onset of pigmented scrotum and descended testes, but there was no evidence from subsequent years that rhythms had been phase advanced. A third of the animals kept continuously at 6 °C remained with pigmented scrotum, descended testes and low body weight for more than a year. Circannual periodicities of animals that continued to display rhythms in the cold room were not significantly longer than those of controls in the warm room. The results suggest that low temperature in the fall can alter the expression of circannual rhythms without much affecting their phasing, while low temperature in the spring produces phase delays which last longer but have not been proved to be persistent.Abbreviation PRC phase response curve  相似文献

An endogenous circannual rhythm drives the seasonal reproductive cycle of a broad spectrum of species. This rhythm is synchronized to the seasons (i.e., entrained) by photoperiod, which acts by regulating the circadian pattern of melatonin secretion from the pineal gland. Prior work has revealed that melatonin patterns secreted in spring/summer entrain the circannual rhythm of reproductive neuroendocrine activity in sheep, whereas secretions in winter do not. The goal of this study was to determine if inability of the winter-melatonin pattern to entrain the rhythm is due to the specific melatonin pattern secreted in winter or to the stage of the circannual rhythm at that time of year. Either a summer- or a winter-melatonin pattern was infused for 70 days into pinealectomized ewes, centered around the summer solstice, when an effective stimulus readily entrains the rhythm. The ewes were ovariectomized and treated with constant-release estradiol implants, and circannual cycles of reproductive neuroendocrine activity were monitored by serum LH concentrations. Only the summer-melatonin pattern entrained the circannual reproductive rhythm. The inability of the winter pattern to do so indicates that the mere presence of a circadian melatonin pattern, in itself, is insufficient for entrainment. Rather, the characteristics of the melatonin pattern, in particular a pattern that mimics the photoperiodic signals of summer, determines entrainment of the circannual rhythm of reproductive neuroendocrine activity in the ewe.  相似文献

1. Zeitgebers for circannual rhythms have been elusive. Demonstration that an external factor is a zeitgeber requires proof of a phase-shift that endures for several years. 2. The California ground squirrel (Spermophilus beecheyi) is an ideal subject. Many features of behavior have circannual rhythms of which change in mass is the easiest to measure. The squirrels thrive in captivity for up to 10 years. The squirrels were kept in individual cages in an air conditioned room, fed lab chow ad lib, and weighed twice a month. They were exposed to a 6-month phase shift of (a) length of day (b) seasonal change in temperature, (c) both, (d) seasonal cycle of irradiance. 3. The squirrels maintained circannual rhythms for up to 9 years. Entrainment was evident only by squirrels exposed to seasonal change in irradiance.  相似文献

In the subtropical finch, spotted munia (Lonchura punctulata) circannual rhythms (of gonads, fattening, feeding) have been demonstrated in an information-free environment of continuous illumination (LL), rendering it an ideal model for research on the physiology of the circannual clock. In an attempt to understand the involvement, if any, of the circadian system in the genesis of circannual rhythms, we studied the effect of pinealectomy (LL 15 lux) and strong continuous illumination (LL 300 lux), both known to abolish circadian rhythms, on the circadian perch-hopping rhythm and on the circannual rhythm of reproduction and fattening in the same birds. While both pinealectomy and LL 300 lux treatments abolished the circadian rhythm of motor activity, they had no effect on the circannual rhythms of gonadal size and fattening. If the endogenous circadian rhythm in perch-hopping can be taken to reflect the circadian clock mechanism associated with gonadal functioning, present results suggest that circannual rhythm of reproduction in spotted munia is independent of circadian events.  相似文献

Seasonally-breeding deer living in cool temperate environments exhibit pronounced seasonal rhythms of voluntary food intake, growth rate and fattening and the growth and development of the coat. All of these rhythms are considered to be entrained by photoperiod and melatonin, although so far this has only been demonstrated to be the case in one species, the red deer. This paper reviewed current data on seasonal rhythms in several species of deer. A comparison of two species with different breeding seasons, the red deer and the Pere David's deer, indicated that seasonal reproduction, appetite and coat growth rhythms are linked and may be controlled by a single circannual rhythm generator. All of these seasonal rhythms should be considered as adaptive for species living in cool temperate environments with marked fluctuations in food supply and climatic conditions.  相似文献

In addition to pineal control of reproduction in seasonal breeders, melatonin is also known to influence various immune parameters. In the present experiment, we assessed the effect of exogenous melatonin treatment on different hematological parameters of peripheral blood and bone marrow cells, together with histological observations of spleen and thymus blastogenic response and stimulation ratio, and hormonal assays (melatonin and testosterone) of Indian palm squirrel (Funambulus pennanti) during their reproductively active phase when endogenous melatonin levels are low. Daily subcutaneous injection of melatonin (25 microg/100 g body mass.) at 17.30-18.00 h to adult male squirrels for 60 consecutive days during May-June significantly increased the lymphocyte count of blood and bone marrow and the blastogenic response/percent stimulation ratio of spleen and thymus. Histological observation showed densely packed thymocytes and splenocytes. During this period, peripheral testosterone level was high and melatonin was low establishing an inverse relationship as noted earlier for this squirrel. In pinealectomized squirrels, decreased total leukocyte count and percent lymphocyte count in peripheral blood and bone marrow, along with a decreased cell density in spleen and thymus was observed histologically. Further, melatonin treatment of pinealectomized squirrels resulted in restoration of the immune parameters in line with a normal control level. We suggest that during the reproductively active period of male Indian palm squirrels the lymphoid organs were sensitive to melatonin; hence, the exogenous melatonin treatment had an immuno-enhancing effect.  相似文献

A recent focus of chronobiological studies has been to establish diurnal models as alternatives to the more frequently used nocturnal rodents. In the present study, light-dark (LD) entrainment characteristics were examined in one diurnal species, the Indian palm squirrel (Funambulus pennanti). Palm squirrels showed strongly diurnal locomotor activity rhythms (? 88 percent) under light-dark (LD) cycles, with activity bimodally distributed during the L phase. In comparison to a dim LD cycle, exposure to a bright LD cycle caused a phase advance in the onset of activity, an increase in daily activity levels and an increase in the duration of activity. Percentage diurnality, however, did not vary between bright and dim LD cycles. Activity rhythms reentrained in significantly fewer days after an 8 hour phase delay of the LD cycle compared to an 8 hour phase advance. In both cases, the direction of reentrainment followed the direction of the LD shift. When exposed to single light pulses (1 hour) presented at the same time each day, 6/7 squirrels entrained. Under a skeletal photoperiod cycle (2 x 1 hour light pulses each day), 6/8 squirrels showed stable entrainment. The remaining squirrels exhibited rhythm splitting, with each component synchronising in an unstable manner with one of the light pulses. Under entrainment to single light pulses and to the skeletal photoperiod cycle, the phase angle of entrainment was negatively correlated with t. Finally, when exposed to a skeletal scotoperiod cycle (2 x 1-hour dark pulses each day), only 3/8 squirrels entrained, while the others free-ran. Two of the entrained squirrels showed spontaneous phase reversals during entrainment. As with other species, the activity rhythm of palm squirrels appears to be controlled by two separate self-sustaining oscillators. The strongly diurnal nature of palm squirrels make them a promising diurnal model for studies examining endogenous and exogenous influences on circadian functioning.  相似文献

In indigenous arctic reindeer and ptarmigan, circadian rhythms are not expressed during the constant light of summer or constant dark of winter, and it has been hypothesized that a seasonal absence of circadian rhythms is common to all vertebrate residents of polar regions. Here, we show that, while free-living arctic ground squirrels do not express circadian rhythms during the heterothermic and pre-emergent euthermic intervals of hibernation, they display entrained daily rhythms of body temperature (T(b)) throughout their active season, which includes six weeks of constant sun. In winter, ground squirrels are arrhythmic and regulate core body temperatures to within ±0.2°C for up to 18 days during steady-state torpor. In spring, after the use of torpor ends, male but not female ground squirrels, resume euthermic levels of T(b) in their dark burrows but remain arrhythmic for up to 27 days. However, once activity on the surface begins, both sexes exhibit robust 24 h cycles of body temperature. We suggest that persistence of nycthemeral rhythms through the polar summer enables ground squirrels to minimize thermoregulatory costs. However, the environmental cues (zeitgebers) used to entrain rhythms during the constant light of the arctic summer in these semi-fossorial rodents are unknown.  相似文献

Summary The ability of social stimuli to act as entraining agents of circadian rhythms was investigated in golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus). In a first experiment, pairs of male hamsters (one of them enucleated and the other intact) were maintained under a light-dark (LD) cycle with a period of 23.3 h. Running-wheel activity was recorded to determine the effect of social interaction on the free-running circadian rhythm of activity. In several pairs, general activity and body temperature were also recorded. In all pairs the intact animals entrained to the LD cycle, whereas the activity rhythms of the enucleated animals free-ran with periods of approximately 24 h and showed no apparent sign of synchronization or relative coordination with the other member of the pair. In a second experiment, male hamsters maintained in constant darkness received pulses of social interaction, which have been reported to induce phase shifts of the activity rhythm. Consistent phase shifts in the running-wheel activity rhythm were not induced by the social pulses in our experiment. These results suggest strongly that social stimuli are not effective entraining agents of circadian rhythms in the golden hamster.Abbreviations CT circadian time - LD light-dark  相似文献

1. Serum cortisol levels were measured throughout an annual cycle in male European ground squirrels, Citellus citellus L. 2. A circannual rhythm of these levels in euthermic animals was found: the highest being in late October, November and December, the lowest in May, early October and March. 3. The levels varied in the hibernating period as well: strongly reduced during the first part (October-December) and significantly elevated in the second one (January-March). 4. A significant elevation of the cortisol levels was marked 18-20 hr after full arousal from hibernation in October.  相似文献
