The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of heat exposure in the absence of hyperthermia on power output during repeated cycling sprints. Seven males performed four 10-s cycling sprints interspersed by 30 s of active recovery on a cycle ergometer in hot-dry and thermoneutral environments. Changes in rectal temperature were similar under the two ambient conditions. The mean 2-s power output over the 1st–4th sprints was significantly lower under the hot-dry condition than under the thermoneutral condition. The amplitude of the electromyogram was lower under the hot-dry condition than under the thermoneutral condition during the early phase (0–3 s) of each cycling sprint. No significant difference was observed for blood lactate concentration between the two ambient conditions. Power output at the onset of a cycling sprint during repeated cycling sprints is decreased due to heat exposure in the absence of hyperthermia.  相似文献

The physiological burden of heat loads has been studied with regard to four types of hyperthermia. It has been found that the genesis of overheating depends on the origin of hyperthermia. Heating almost always negatively affects the body during work, causing marked physiological changes and reducing performance capacity, especially during performance of continuous physical work, which seems to be a more aggravating factor as compared to discontinuous work. However, under thermoneutral conditions, hyperthermia may be essential for efficient muscle performance. During discontinuous physical work, rectal temperature rapidly increases to a steady state (38.7°C) corresponding to the highest work capacity, both physical and mental, which decreases with further overheating of the body (39.2°C). Usually, continuous work is much harder to bear than discontinuous work under thermoneutral conditions.  相似文献

Classically, cold induced plasma volume reduction is explained by an increased diuresis which is generated by an inhibition of antidiuretic hormone release. However, most of the haemoconcentration appears to be reversible during rewarming. This observation weakens the former statement. The aim of this study was to clarify the mechanisms involved in the reversal of the cold induced haemoconcentration. Six young males, resting in a dorsal reclining position, were exposed successively to a thermoneutral environment (30 min), a cold environment (1 degrees C; cold) or thermoneutrality (control) for 120 min, and during a 60-min recovery period in thermoneutral conditions. During cold stress, a reduction of 15% (i.e. 510 ml) of the plasma volume was observed, and osmolality was unchanged. After the 60-min recovery under thermoneutral conditions, plasma volume variation between the Cold and the Control experiments was reduced and reached 3% (i.e. 100 ml). This volume equalled the increased amount of urine production observed during the cold stress experiment. Haemoconcentration cannot be explained by increased urinary water loss (+/- 100 ml) alone. Therefore a transient shift of plasma water from vascular to interstitial spaces, due to an increase of blood pressure, could be involved in the reduction of plasma volume.  相似文献

Surface electromyography and turn–amplitude analysis were used to study muscle fatigue after exposure to heating (40°C, 60 min) and under thermoneutral conditions (22°C) in 12 parkinsonian patients from 57 to 65 years of age treated with Nacom, Bromocryptin, and Cyclodol. In the patients, heating caused a twofold increase in the motor performance (number of contractions until exhaustion and nerve conduction velocity) and a decrease in the mean electromyogram (EMG) amplitude and number of turns of spontaneous muscle activity. The spontaneous EMG activity was fully inhibited after exposure to heating and fatigue, suggesting a thermoregulatory dependence of the spontaneous muscle tone (rigidity) in parkinsonian patients. After exposure to heating, fatigue also caused a decrease in the peak ratio with a shift of the mean EMG amplitude to lower values. After-load recovery of the mean EMG amplitude was slower under heating versus thermoneutral conditions and was compensated for by an increased number of turns.  相似文献

The process of muscular fatigue under cooling conditions (+10°C, 30 min) was studied on seven healthy volunteers (males aged 20 to 34 years) by the surface electromyography (EMG) method using the turn-amplitude analysis. A distinct stage pattern of changes in the parameters of the turn-amplitude analysis was revealed under thermoneutral conditions. The direction of EMG changes was retained in fatigued subjects in the cold; however, under mild exercise stress, the “thermoregulation” component of muscular fatigue was revealed.  相似文献

Oxygen consumption (VO2) and shivering movements were recorded in adult, conscious cats in a thermoneutral (24-27 degrees C) and in a cold (3-8 degrees C) environment during normoxia, hypoxia, or hyperoxia for 55 min. In the cold environment, VO2 correlated with shivering index (SI) under conditions of normoxia or ambient hypoxia (FIO2 = 0.12). During normoxia, VO2 was 63% higher in the cold than the thermoneutral environment. Ambient hypoxia acutely reduced VO2 in cold and thermoneutral environments, the decrement being greater for the former than the latter. Similarly, the variation in VO2 for unit change in SI was greater in hypoxia than normoxic conditions, suggesting that hypoxia influenced nonshivering as well as shivering components of cold-induced VO2. Hypoxia induced by CO (FICO = 0.002) also reduced VO2 and SI, a result that is consistent with previous results indicating that carotid body chemoreceptors do not mediate the suppression of shivering by ambient hypoxia. Hyperoxia increased VO2 and SI in the cold, and the effects of both hypoxia and hyperoxia in the cold were antagonized by increasing FICO2 to 0.03. The results demonstrate that hypoxia suppresses VO2 in the cold by reducing the intensity of shivering and, probably, by an action on metabolic rate that is unrelated to cold-induced calorigenesis.  相似文献

A tracer kinetic study with [14C]-1-palmitic acid was carried out to study the influence of acute exposure to cold and starvation on free fatty acid (FFA) metabolism in serum of newborn rabbits. The turnover rate of serum FFA was 10.20 mumol/min in well fed rabbits kept in a thermoneutral environment (normal conditions). Cold exposure as well as starvation either in a cold or thermoneutral environment resulted in a diminution of the turnover rate, being the consequence of a significantly reduced pool of FFA. It was 9.57 mumol under normal conditions. The disappearance rate (1.07 min-1), half time (0.65 min) and turnover time (0.94 min) of well nourished animals was slightly, but mostly not significantly, influenced by cold exposure and starvation. The cold induced increase in serum FFA concentration and the decrease following restoration of thermoneutrality did not run parallel with changes in the absolute turnover rate.  相似文献

The present study was initiated to determine whether dietary supplemental L-carnitine and ascorbic acid affect growth performance, carcass yield and composition, abdominal fat and plasma L-carnitine concentration of broiler chicks reared under normal and high temperature. During the experiment, two temperature regimes were employed in two experimental rooms, which were identical but different in environmental temperature. The regimes were thermoneutral (20-22°C for 24 h) or recycling hot (34-36°C for 8 h and 20-22°C for 16 h). One-day-old broiler chicks (ROSS) were used in the experiment. A 2 x 2 x 2 factorial arrangement was employed with two levels (0 and 50 mg/kg) of supplemental L-carnitine and two levels (0 or 500 mg/kg) of supplemental ascorbic acid in drinking water under thermoneutral or high temperature regimes. Body weight gain was affected by high temperature. However, body weight gain was significantly improved in animals receiving supplemental L-carnitine, ascorbic acid or L-carnitine + ascorbic acid compared to animals receiving unsupplemented diet under high temperature. On the other hand, supplemental L-carnitine or L-carnitine + ascorbic acid reduced body weight gain under thermoneutral condition. Supplemental ascorbic acid significantly improved feed conversion efficiency, the improvement was relatively greater under high temperature. The L-carnitine content in the plasma was higher in the groups receiving supplemental L-carnitine and ascorbic acid under high temperature, while broilers fed supplemental L-carnitine and ascorbic acid had a decreased level of plasma L-carnitine concentration under normal temperature. It is concluded that dietary supplemental L-carnitine or L-carnitine + ascorbic acid may have positive effects on body weight gain, carcass weight under high temperature conditions.  相似文献

In rats, the effect of activation of the cold- and menthol-sensitive TRPM8 ion channel on different thermoregulatory parameters: total oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide release, respiration coefficient, constriction response of skin blood vessels, muscle activity, was studied. Activation of TRPM8 with menthol even in thermoneutral conditions produces an increase in oxygen consumption and a decrease in respiratory coefficient, which may suggest enhanced non-shivering thermogenesis and lipolysis. Rapid cooling against the background of TRPM8 activation is characterized by a decrease in the temperature thresholds of all thermoregulatory responses without associated changes in sequences of their initiation as well as in enhancement of metabolic component of emergency thermogenesis which leads to improved maintenance of core temperature in conditions when external cold acts on the organism. The obtained data on the effect of TRPM8 activation on metabolic parameters in thermoneutral conditions and under cooling suggest acontinuous involvement of this receptor in regulation of total metabolism and, possibly, in determination of the type of organism's metabolism as well as in determination of organism's response to external cooling.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to assess the heat tolerance of animals of two Portuguese (Alentejana and Mertolenga) and two exotic (Frisian and Limousine) cattle breeds, through the monitoring of physiological acclimatization reactions in different thermal situations characterized by alternate periods of thermoneutrality and heat stress simulated in climatic chambers. In the experiment, six heifers of the Alentejana, Frisian and Mertolenga breeds and four heifers of the Limousine breed were used. The increase in chamber temperatures had different consequences on the animals of each breed. When submitted to heat stress, the Frisian animals developed high thermal polypnea (more than 105 breath movements per minute), which did not prevent an increase in the rectal temperature (from 38.7°C to 40.0°C). However, only a slight depression in food intake and in blood thyroid hormone concentrations was observed under thermal stressful conditions. Under the thermal stressful conditions, Limousine animals decreased food intake by 11.4% and blood triiodothyronine (T3) hormone concentration decreased to 76% of the level observed in thermoneutral conditions. Alentejana animals had similar reactions. The Mertolenga cattle exhibited the highest capacity for maintaining homeothermy: under heat stressful conditions, the mean thermal polypnea increased twofold, but mean rectal temperature did not increase. Mean food intake decreased by only 2% and mean T3 blood concentration was lowered to 85,6% of the concentration observed under thermoneutral conditions. These results lead to the conclusion that the Frisian animals had more difficulty in tolerating high temperatures, the Limousine and Alentejana ones had an intermediate difficulty, and the Mertolenga animals were by far the most heat tolerant.  相似文献

Our previous studies have shown that methionine supplementation could help to attenuate the effects of heat stress on the metabolism of broiler chickens. Here we investigated for the first time the effects of methionine supplementation in the form of DL-methionyl-DL-methionine on broilers subjected to heat stress during the growth phase. Broilers were divided into two groups; one group was reared under thermoneutral conditions and the other under continuous heat stress (30 ± 1 °C, 60% relative humidity). Both groups were subdivided into three dietary treatments: a methionine-deficient (MD) diet, a diet supplemented with free methionine (DL-M), and a diet supplemented with methionine dipeptide (DL-MM). Broilers raised under chronic heat stress had lower feed intake and weight gain than broilers raised under thermoneutral conditions (P < 0.05). There were no differences in animal performance between methionine-supplemented diets (DL-M and DL-MM). Heat-stressed birds had significantly higher heterophil/lymphocyte (H/L) ratio than thermoneutral birds. Under heat stress, broilers fed DL-M and DL-MM diets had lower H/L ratio than birds fed the MD diet. Higher concentrations of carbonylated proteins and lower concentration of reduced glutathione were observed in broilers raised under heat stress. In comparing heat-stressed broilers, we found that birds fed the DL-M diet had lower concentrations of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances and carbonylated proteins than those fed the MD diet (P < 0.05). Higher expression of glutathione peroxidase (GPX) and glutathione synthetase (GSS) genes was observed in heat-stressed broilers (P < 0.05). Under heat stress, the MD diet increased GPX expression compared with other diets. Under thermoneutral conditions, the DL-M diet resulted in the highest GSS expression. There was a negative correlation between DNA methylation and GPX and GSS expression. Our results showed that supplementation of broiler diets with free methionine or methionine dipeptide may help attenuate the effects of heat stress through enhanced activation of genes related to the glutathione antioxidant system. Methionine effects were found for gene regulation, gene expression, and post-translational processing.  相似文献

In a study on 53 healthy male volunteers with the use of an infrared thermograph, data that the thermal portrait, i.e., skin temperature distribution, under the conditions of muscular rest and minimal chemical thermoregulation activation is related to the maximal aerobic capacity (r = + 0.6) and the lactate level after critical muscle load (r = −0.7) were obtained. A series of pilot experiments on six volunteers showed that acute regional cooling (by placing feet into ice-cold water for 1 min) led to temperature rise in some local areas of the breast and back skin and increase in oxygen uptake, pulmonary ventilation and the respiratory quotient. Simultaneously, the lactate level in peripheral blood was reduced. On the basis of these results, it was assumed that brown adipose tissue (BAT) activity influenced the thermal portrait formation in the case of environmental temperature below thermoneutral. This hypothesis makes it possible to explain a negative correlation between the skin temperature and the body mass index and a twofold increase in the oxygen uptake during acute cold exposure. Nevertheless, further investigations are necessary to clarify the physiological mechanisms underlying the significant correlation between skin temperatures at rest under thermoneutral conditions and the maximal aerobic capacity, anaerobic threshold and lactate accumulation after critical muscle load.  相似文献

Probiotics have growth promoting effects even under periods of heat stress challenge. More information is needed to understand the mechanisms by which probiotics maintain the growth performance. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a probiotic based on Bacillus subtilis bacteria on growth related mechanisms of broilers under heat stress conditions. Specifically, growth performance, skeletal bone characteristics, skeletal muscles size, intestinal villus-crypt structure, intestinal bacteria, growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), cholesterol, and glucose. A total of 1200 one day old Ross 308 male broilers were randomly distributed into 4 treatments, with 12 replicates per treatment and 25 birds per replicate. A 2 × 2 factorial arrangement was used; the main factors were environmental temperature (thermoneutral or heat stress) and diet (control or control + B. subtilis; 3 × 107 cfu/kg of feed). From d 22 to 35 of age, birds were either exposed to thermoneutral conditions (21 °C) or chronic heat stress (30 °C). During the same period, each group was divided into 2 subgroups and fed either the control diet or the B. subtilis supplemented diet. The results demonstrated that B. subtilis had positive effects (P < 0.05) on the body weight gain, feed conversion ratio, villus height, crypt depth, villus surface area, absorptive epithelial cell area and viable counts of intestinal beneficial bacteria. B. subtilis increased (P < 0.05) serum GH, IGF-1 and maintain normal levels of cholesterol and glucose under heat stress conditions. In addition, broilers fed B. subtilis under heat stress conditions exhibited higher (P < 0.05) skeletal muscles size and improved (P < 0.05) tibia traits and lower (P < 0.05) abdominal fat pads deposition compared with the controls. B. subtilis had no effect on rectal temperature under thermoneutral or heat stress conditions. It is concluded that B. subtilis can be used as growth promoters in broilers, particularly during the periods of heat stress conditions.  相似文献

Thermoregulation constitutes an important share of the energy budget of endotherms. Elevated thermoregulatory requirements must be met by oxygen supply through the blood, as heat is produced mainly via aerobic processes. In contrast to mammal studies, it remains unclear whether elevated thermoregulatory needs are followed by changes in haematological variables in birds. We investigated haematocrit (HCT), haemoglobin content per volume of blood (HGB), number of red blood cells (RBCcount), and size of the erythrocytes (RBCarea) in zebra finches Taeniopygia guttata acclimated to either cold or thermoneutral ambient temperatures under laboratory conditions. Seventy‐nine females were maintained for six weeks either in cold (T = +12°C) or thermoneutral (T = +32°C) ambient temperature prior to blood collection. On average, HGB, HCT and RBCcount were significantly lower by about 10% in cold acclimated compared to thermoneutral acclimated birds. Only RBCarea was not different between the two acclimation temperatures. Mean HCT, one of the most commonly measured haematological variable for example was 53 ± 0.9% (LSM ± SEM) in thermoneutral and 49 ± 0.8 % (LSM ± SEM) in cold acclimated zebra finches. On first sight, the observed lower values for three out of the four determined haematological variables in response to acclimation to cold question oxygen supply to be indeed a limiting factor for heat production. However, higher demands of oxygen supply due to increased thermoregulation in birds may instead require specific optimisation of blood viscosity and modulation by other cardiovascular properties. Nucleated red blood cells in birds may pose different strain on blood viscosity compared to non‐nucleated mammalian erythrocytes and explain the contrasting response in haematological variables to temperature acclimation between birds and mammals.  相似文献

This study investigated the physiological function of suppressed melatonin through thermoregulation in a cold environment. Interactions between thermoregulation directly affected by exposure to a cold environment and indirectly affected by endogenous melatonin suppression by bright-light exposure were examined. Ten male subjects were exposed to two different illumination intensities (30 and 5000 lux) for 4.5?h, and two different ambient temperatures (15 and 27°C) for 2?h before sleep under dark and thermoneutral conditions. Salivary melatonin level was suppressed by bright light (p?<?0.001), although the ambient temperature condition had no significant effect on melatonin. During sleep, significant effects of pre-sleep exposure to a cold ambient temperature (p?<?0.001) and bright light (p?<?0.01) on rectal temperature (Tre) were observed. Pre-sleep, bright-light exposure led to an attenuated fall in Tre during sleep. Moreover, Tre dropped more precipitously after cold exposure than thermoneutral conditions (cold: ?0.54?±?0.07°C/h; thermoneutral: ?0.16?±?0.03°C/h; p?<?0.001). Pre-sleep, bright-light exposure delayed the nadir time of Tre under thermoneutral conditions (p?<?0.05), while cold exposure masked the circadian rhythm with a precipitous decrease in Tre. A significant correlation between the Tre nadir and melatonin level (r?=??0.774, p?<?0.05) indicated that inter-individual differences with higher melatonin levels lead to a reduction in Tre after cold exposure. These results suggest that suppressed endogenous melatonin inhibits the downregulation of the body temperature set-point during sleep. (Author correspondence: )  相似文献

Different stress hormones are released during prolonged exercise and passive hyperthermia. We hypothesized that these different hormonal responses could contribute to the different changes in the immune response during these two challenges. Methods: Eight subjects completed three trials in a randomized order. In the control trial (C), the subjects remained in a sitting posture for three hours in thermoneutral conditions. In the exercise hyperthermia trial (E), they exercised for two hours on a treadmill at 65% max in thermoneutral conditions, followed by 1-h recovery in thermoneutral conditions; in the passive hyperthermia trial (PH), the subjects remained in a semi-recumbent position in a climatic chamber for two hours in hot conditions, followed by 1-h recovery in thermoneutral conditions. During the E and PH trials, wind speed and thermal conditions were modulated to reach a rectal temperature (Tre) of 38.5 degrees C at 60 min and 39 degrees C at 120 min. The subjects did not drink during the experiments. Blood samples (10 mL) were taken at 0, 60, 120 and 180 min of each trial. The total white cell count and its subsets were measured; plasma catecholamines, cortisol and prolactin were assayed. In a whole blood assay, blood leukocytes were stimulated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or phytohemagglutinin (PHA) for 24 and 48 hours, respectively. Cytokines, such as TNF-alpha, IL-10 and INF-gamma were measured in the culture supernatant. RESULTS: The plasma levels of catecholamines were increased only during E, prolactin was increased only during PH, and cortisol was increased in both E and PH. Only the exercise caused a mobilization of blood leukocytes and leukocyte subsets. The INF-gamma and TNF-alpha production by PHA- and LPS-stimulated blood, respectively, were inhibited in a substantial way in both E and PH compared to control when Tre reached 39 degrees C. Only LPS-induced IL-10 production was enhanced during the exercise. The effects of the challenges were increased with 39 degrees C compared to 38.5 degrees C. CONCLUSIONS: Catecholamines play a major role in the mobilization of immunocompetent cells and the production of IL-10 during exercise. Prolactin and catecholamines have adverse role on the immune response, whereas cortisol exerts similar effects during both trials. The consequence could be a protection against inflammatory overshooting.  相似文献

We investigated physiological responses and changes in circulating immune cells following exercise in cold and thermoneutral conditions. Participants were short track skaters (n=9) who were acclimatized to cold conditions, and inline skaters (n=10) who were not acclimatized. All skaters were young, and skating at a recreational level three days per week for at least one year. Using a cross-over design, study variables were measured during 60 min of submaximal cycling (65% V.O2max) in cold (ambient temperature: 5±1°C, relative humidity: 41±9%) and thermoneutral conditions (ambient temperature: 21±1°C, relative humidity: 35±5%). Heart rate, blood lactate and tympanic temperature were measured at rest, during exercise and recovery. Plasma cortisol, calprotectin and circulating blood cell numbers were measured before and after 60 min of cold or thermoneutral conditions, and during recovery from exercise. Heart rate was lower in both groups during exercise in cold versus thermoneutral conditions (P<0.05). The increase in total leukocytes during recovery was primarily due to an increase in neutrophils in both groups. The cold-acclimatized group activated neutrophils after exercise in cold exposure, whereas the non-acclimatized group activated lymphocyte and cortisol after exercise in cold exposure. Lymphocyte subsets significantly changed in both groups over time during recovery as compared to rest. Immediately after exercise in both groups, CD16+ and CD69+ cells were elevated compared to rest or before exercise in both conditions. Acclimatization to exercise in the cold does not appear to influence exercise-induced immune changes in cold conditions, with the possible exception of neutrophils, lymphocytes and cortisol concentration.  相似文献

The main purpose of the thermoregulation system is maintaining temperature homeostasis in the thermoneutral zone. The thermoregulation in the thermoneutral zone is effected by fluctuation of the heat content (mean temperature) of a body. To measure these complex thermophysical parameters the thermoregulation system has a special network of peripheral thermosensors and a special central neurological apparatus.  相似文献

Holstein cows exposed to simulated summer diurnal ambient temperature cycles of Phoenix, Arizona and Atlanta, Georgia and diurnal modifications of these climates displayed daily cycles fluctuations in plasma thyroxine (T4) and rectal temperatures (Tre). There were daily diurnal changes in T4 and Tre under all simulated climate conditions. Maximal values generally occurred in the evening hours and minimum values in the morning. Although the diurnal rhythm was influenced by the various simulated climates (diurnal modifications) a diurnal rhythm was very evident even under constant conditions at thermoneutral (Tnc) and at cyclic thermoneutral conditions (TN). The major significance of the study is that the initiation of night cooling of the animals at a time when their Tre was highest was most beneficial to maintenance of a TN plasma T4 level. There was a highly significant negative relationship of average T4 and average Tre. There was also a significant negative relationship of feed consumption and average temperature-humidity index (THI).These data suggest that night cooling may be a most effective method to alleviate thermoregulatory limitations of a hot climate on optimal animal performance. Decreasing the night time air temperature (Ta) or THI or increasing the diurnal range allows the cows to more easily dissipate excess body heat accumulated during the day and minimize the thermal inhibition on feed intake, and alterations in plasma T4 and Tre.Contribution from the Missouri Agriculture Experimental Station.Reference to a company or product name is for specific information only and does not imply approval or recommendation of product by the University of Missouri or the U.S. Department of Agriculture to the exclusion of others that may be suitable.  相似文献

The objective of the experiment was to examine the interaction of endophyte-infected tall fescue and environmental temperature on follicular and luteal development and function in beef heifers. Heifers were fed endophyte-free or endophyte-infected tall fescue seed at thermoneutral or heat stress temperatures (n = 6/treatment) 4 wk before and 3 wk after synchronized ovulation. All heifers were subjected to thermoneutral conditions (19 degrees C, 50% relative humidity) from Days -7 to -2; temperature increased incrementally from Days -1 to 0 and cycled between 25 degrees C and 31 degrees C between Days 1 and 20 for heat-stressed heifers. Serum was collected and ovaries monitored every other day after induced luteolysis between Days 1 and 23 or until ovulation. Size and location of follicles >4 mm and corpora lutea were recorded. Serum concentrations of prolactin were reduced in heat-stressed heifers fed infected seed and both heat stress and infected seed decreased total cholesterol. Rectal temperature and respiration rate were greatest in heifers fed the infected seed when exposed to maximal temperatures. Heat stress led to reduced diameter of the corpus luteum and serum progesterone compared with thermoneutral conditions. Progesterone was reduced more so in heifers fed infected seed. The combination of infected seed and heat stress was associated with reduced diameter of the preovulatory dominant follicle, and consumption of infected seed led to fewer large follicles during the estrous cycle. Both stressors led to reduced serum estradiol. Impaired follicle function may explain reduced pregnancy rates commonly observed in heifers grazing infected tall fescue pasture.  相似文献
