Objective: To examine associations between eating frequency (EF) and body fatness in pre‐ and postmenopausal women, after excluding potential low‐energy reporters. Research Methods and Procedures: In this cross‐sectional study of 220 free‐living women, 64 pre‐ and 50 postmenopausal non‐low‐energy‐reporting women were further analyzed (age, 24 to 74 years; BMI, 18.5 to 38.6 kg/m2). Anthropometric and body composition measurements (DXA) were performed in all study participants. EF, energy, and macronutrient intake were assessed by 3‐day food record. Physical activity level and energy expenditure were assessed by self‐reported questionnaire. Results: No association between EF and adiposity indices was detected in premenopausal women. In contrast, EF was positively correlated with percentage body fat in postmenopausal women (r = 0.30, p = 0.03). EF was positively correlated with total energy intake in both groups and with total energy expenditure in premenopausal women only (r = 0.34, p = 0.02). Multivariate analysis revealed that, in postmenopausal women, EF was a significant predictor of body fatness (standardized β = 0.41, p = 0.01). Discussion: Frequent eating was not found to be related to adiposity in premenopausal women, but it was associated with increased body fat in postmenopausal women. Possible explanations could be that the frequent eating is not associated with a physically active lifestyle in postmenopausal women or that frequent eating predisposes women after menopause to a higher energy intake by increasing food stimuli and rendering it more difficult for them to control energy balance.  相似文献

Insulin sensitivity (IS) is measured by the euglycemic–hyperinsulinemic clamp under a nonphysiological condition. Daily C‐peptide urinary excretion may be a physiological index of IS, because C‐peptide is co‐secreted with insulin as a function of nutrient intake and IS. The amount of 2H2O released from glycolytic glucose metabolism after [6,6‐2H2]‐glucose ingestion was recently proposed as a physiological measure of IS. We compared these IS surrogates to the gold standard (euglycemic–hyperinsulinemic clamp). Thirty (15 male/15 female) sedentary, nondiabetic participants (27.2 ± 4.0 (s.d.) kg/m2, 35 ± 12 years) were admitted for 3 days to our in‐patient unit. After a 10‐h fast, they received 60 g of glucose and 15 g of [6,6‐2H2]‐glucose. Before glucose ingestion and hourly thereafter for 4 h, plasma glucose and insulin concentrations, and plasma deuterium enrichment were determined. Plasma 2H2O production divided by insulin response was used as the glycolytic index. On day 2, subjects spent 23 h in a metabolic chamber (eucaloric diet, 50% carbohydrate, 30% fat). Urinary C‐peptide excretion was divided by energy intake yielding the C‐peptide to energy intake ratio (CPEP/EI). After leaving the chamber (day 3, 10‐h fast), IS was measured by a 2‐h clamp (120 mU/m2/min). Average IS (clamp) was 7.3 ± 2.6 mg glucose/kg estimated metabolic body size/min (range: 3.6–13.2). These values were inversely correlated with CPEP/EI (r = ?0.62; P < 0.01) and positively with the glycolytic rate (r = 0.60; P < 0.01). In nondiabetic subjects, two novel estimates of IS—daily urinary C‐peptide urinary excretion and glycolytic rate during an oral glucose tolerance test —were related to IS by a clamp.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the ability of a novel activity monitor designed to be minimally obtrusive in predicting free‐living energy expenditure. Subjects were 18 men and 12 women (age: 41 ± 11 years, BMI: 24.4 ± 3 kg/m2). The habitual physical activity was monitored for 14 days using a DirectLife triaxial accelerometer for movement registration (TracmorD) (Philips New Wellness Solutions, Lifestyle Incubator, the Netherlands). TracmorD output was expressed as activity counts per day (Cnts/d). Simultaneously, total energy expenditure (TEE) was measured in free living conditions using doubly labeled water (DLW). Activity energy expenditure (AEE) and the physical activity level (PAL) were determined from TEE and sleeping metabolic rate (SMR). A multiple‐linear regression model predicted 76% of the variance in TEE, using as independent variables SMR (partial‐r2 = 0.55, P < 0.001), and Cnts/d (partial r2 = 0.21, P < 0.001). The s.e. of TEE estimates was 0.9 MJ/day or 7.4% of the average TEE. A model based on body mass (partial‐r2 = 0.31, P < 0.001) and Cnts/d (partial‐r2 = 0.23, P < 0.001) predicted 54% of the variance in TEE. Cnts/d were significantly and positively associated with AEE (r = 0.54, P < 0.01), PAL (r = 0.68, P < 0.001), and AEE corrected by body mass (r = 0.71, P < 0.001). This study showed that the TracmorD is a highly accurate instrument for predicting free‐living energy expenditure. The miniaturized design did not harm the ability of the instrument in measuring physical activity and in determining outcome parameters of physical activity such as TEE, AEE, and PAL.  相似文献

Objective: To examine the relationship between fasting plasma leptin and 24‐hour energy expenditure (EE), substrate oxidation, and spontaneous physical activity (SPA) in obese subjects before and after a major weight reduction compared with normal weight controls. To test fasting plasma leptin, substrate oxidations, and SPA as predictive markers of success during a standardized weight loss intervention. Research Methods and Procedures: Twenty‐one nondiabetic obese (body mass index: 33.9 to 43.8 kg/m2) and 13 lean (body mass index: 20.4 to 24.7 kg/m2) men matched for age and height were included in the study. All obese subjects were reexamined after a mean weight loss of 19.2 kg (95% confidence interval: 15.1–23.4 kg) achieved by 16 weeks of dietary intervention followed by 8 weeks of weight stability. Twenty‐four‐hour EE and substrate oxidations were measured by whole‐body indirect calorimetry. SPA was assessed by microwave radar. Results: In lean subjects, leptin adjusted for fat mass (FM) was correlated to 24‐hour EE before (r = ?0.56, p < 0.05) but not after adjustment for fat free mass. In obese subjects, leptin correlated inversely with 24‐hour and resting nonprotein respiratory quotient (r = ?0.47, p < 0.05 and r = ?0.50, p < 0.05) both before and after adjustments for energy balance. Baseline plasma leptin concentration, adjusted for differences in FM, was inversely related to the size of weight loss after 8 weeks (r = ?0.41, p = 0.07), 16 weeks (r = ?0.51, p < 0.05), and 24 weeks (r = ?0.50, p < 0.05). Discussion: The present study suggests that leptin may have a stimulating effect on fat oxidation in obese subjects. A low leptin level for a given FM was associated with a greater weight loss, suggesting that obese subjects with greater leptin sensitivities are more successful in reducing weight.  相似文献

Objective: Epidemiological studies suggest that high birth weight might be associated with an increased risk of obesity later in life. Programming of metabolic, endocrine, and/or autonomic pathways during intrauterine development has been proposed to explain this association. Research Methods and Procedures: To determine the relationship between birth weight and body composition and energy metabolism later in life, we measured fat mass and fat‐free mass (hydrodensitometry or double‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry), 24‐hour energy expenditure, sleeping metabolic rate, and 24‐hour respiratory quotient (respiratory chamber) in 272 adult nondiabetic Pima Indians (161 males/111 females, age 25 ± 5 years, mean ± SD). In these subjects, birth weight varied over a wide range (2000 to 5000 g). Individuals known to be offspring of diabetic pregnancies were excluded. In 44 of the 272 subjects, muscle sympathetic nerve activity was assessed by microneurography. Results: Birth weight was positively correlated with adult height (r = 0.20, p < 0.001) and fat‐free mass (r = 0.21, p < 0.001), but not with fat mass (r = 0.01, not significant). Sleeping metabolic rate, adjusted for age, sex, fat‐free mass, and fat mass, was negatively related to birth weight (r = ?0.13, p < 0.05), whereas adjusted 24‐hour energy expenditure (r = 0.07, not significant) and 24‐hour respiratory quotient (r = ?0.09, not significant) were not. There was no relationship between birth weight and muscle sympathetic nerve activity (r = 0.12, not significant, n = 44). Discussion: In Pima Indians who are not offspring of diabetic pregnancies, high birth weight is associated with increased height and lean body mass, but not with increased adiposity later in life. Although high birth weight may be associated with relatively low resting energy expenditure, it is not associated with major abnormalities in 24‐hour energy metabolism or with low muscle sympathetic nerve activity later in life.  相似文献

Objective: The objectives of this study were to compare the effects of diets rich in medium‐chain triglycerides (MCTs) or long‐chain triglycerides (LCTs) on body composition, energy expenditure, substrate oxidation, subjective appetite, and ad libitum energy intake in overweight men. Research Methods and Procedures: Twenty‐four healthy, overweight men with body mass indexes between 25 and 31 kg/m2 consumed diets rich in MCT or LCT for 28 days each in a crossover randomized controlled trial. At baseline and after 4 weeks of each dietary intervention, energy expenditure was measured using indirect calorimetry, and body composition was analyzed using magnetic resonance imaging. Results: Upper body adipose tissue (AT) decreased to a greater extent (p < 0.05) with functional oil (FctO) compared with olive oil (OL) consumption (?0.67 ± 0.26 kg and ?0.02 ± 0.19 kg, respectively). There was a trend toward greater loss of whole‐body subcutaneous AT volume (p = 0.087) with FctO compared with OL consumption. Average energy expenditure was 0.04 ± 0.02 kcal/min greater (p < 0.05) on day 2 and 0.03 ± 0.02 kcal/min (not significant) on day 28 with FctO compared with OL consumption. Similarly, average fat oxidation was greater (p = 0.052) with FctO compared with OL intake on day 2 but not day 28. Discussion: Consumption of a diet rich in MCTs results in greater loss of AT compared with LCTs, perhaps due to increased energy expenditure and fat oxidation observed with MCT intake. Thus, MCTs may be considered as agents that aid in the prevention of obesity or potentially stimulate weight loss.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of mild calorie restriction (CR) (5%) on body weight, body composition, energy expenditure, feeding behavior, and locomotor activity in female C57BL/6J mice. Mice were subjected to a 5% reduction of food intake relative to baseline intake of ad libitum (AL) mice for 3 or 4 weeks. In experiment 1, body weight was monitored weekly and body composition (fat and lean mass) was determined at weeks 0, 2, and 4 by dual energy X‐ray absorptiometry. In experiment 2, body weight was measured every 3 days and body composition was determined by quantitative magnetic resonance weekly, and energy expenditure, feeding behavior, and locomotor activity were determined over 3 weeks in a metabolic chamber. At the end of both experiments, CR mice had greater fat mass (P < 0.01) and less lean mass (P < 0.01) compared with AL mice. Total energy expenditure (P < 0.05) and resting energy expenditure (P < 0.05) were significantly decreased in CR mice compared with AL mice over 3 weeks. CR mice ate significantly more food than AL mice immediately following daily food provisioning at 1600 hours (P < 0.01). These findings showed that mild CR caused increased fat mass, decreased lean mass and energy expenditure, and altered feeding behavior in female C57BL/6J mice. Locomotor activity or brown adipose tissue (BAT) thermogenic capacity did not appear to contribute to the decrease in energy expenditure. The increase in fat mass and decrease in lean mass may be a stress response to the uncertainty of food availability.  相似文献

Objective: Higher levels of physical activity have been associated with body weight maintenance, but previous work in our laboratory suggests that this is not purely related to energy balance. We hypothesize that this may be related to the partitioning of dietary fat between oxidation and storage. Research Methods and Procedures: Healthy women (age 24 ± 1 years, BMI = 21.2 ± 0.4 kg/m2) were recruited to participate in rest (n = 10) or exercise sessions of light (n = 11), moderate (n = 10), and heavy (n = 7) exercise. All exercises (1250 kJ above rest) were performed on a stationary cycle inside of a whole‐body calorimeter. [1‐13C]oleate and [d31]palmitate were given in a liquid meal 30 minutes post‐exercise. An additional study was done with identical exercise sessions, but with administration of an oral dose of [1‐13C]acetate and [d3]acetate 30 minutes post‐exercise to determine label sequestration. Results: Cumulative oxidation of [1‐13C]oleate was significantly greater after light (45 ± 3%), moderate (54 ± 4%), and heavy (51 ± 4%) exercise than that with rest (33 ± 3%) (p = 0.0008). Cumulative oxidation of [d31]palmitate did not differ among trials (12 ± 2%, 14 ± 1%, 17 ± 2%, and 14 ± 2% for rest, light, moderate, and heavy, respectively; p = 0.30). Discussion: Exercise standardized for energy expenditure increases monounsaturated fat oxidation more than saturated fat oxidation and that the increase occurs regardless of intensity. Recommendations for physical activity for the purposes of weight control may be specific for dietary fat composition.  相似文献

Objective: To explore the potential role of the endogenous peptide YY (PYY) in the long‐term regulation of body weight and energy homeostasis. Research Methods and Procedures: Fasting and postprandial plasma PYY concentrations were measured after an overnight fast and 30 to 180 minutes after a standardized meal in 29 (21 men/8 women) non‐diabetic subjects, 16 of whom had a follow‐up visit 10.8 ± 1.4 months later. Ratings of hunger and satiety were collected using visual analog scales. Resting metabolic rate (RMR) (15‐hour RMR) and respiratory quotient (RQ) were assessed using a respiratory chamber. Results: Fasting PYY concentrations were negatively correlated with various markers of adiposity and negatively associated with 15‐hour RMR (r = ?0.46, p = 0.01). Postprandial changes in PYY (area under the curve) were positively associated with postprandial changes in ratings of satiety (r = 0.47, p = 0.01). The maximal PYY concentrations achieved after the meal (peak PYY) were negatively associated with 24‐hour RQ (r = ?0.41, p = 0.03). Prospectively, the peak PYY concentrations were negatively associated with changes in body weight (r = ?0.58, p = 0.01). Discussion: Our data indicate that the endogenous PYY may be involved in the long‐term regulation of body weight. It seems that this long‐term effect was not exclusively driven by the modulation of food intake but also by the control of energy expenditure and lipid metabolism.  相似文献

Objective: To determine if overweight and obese women provide more accurate reports of their energy intake by 1) in‐person recall with an obese interviewer, 2) in‐person recall with a lean interviewer, or 3) telephone recall with an unknown interviewer. Research Methods and Procedures: Eighty‐eight overweight and obese women participated in this study. Subjects completed one telephone‐administered multiple‐pass 24‐hour recall (MP24R) with an unknown interviewer and were then randomly assigned to an in‐person MP24R with either a lean or obese interviewer to gather reported energy intake (rEI). Basal metabolic rate (BMR) was measured using a Deltrac monitor, and physical activity (EEPA) was estimated using a Caltrac accelerometer. Therefore, estimated energy expenditure was determined by: estTEE = (BMR + EEPA) × 1.10. Results: No significant differences were found between the two in‐person interview modes for subject age, weight, body mass index, percentage of body fat, total energy expenditure, rEI, and misreporting of energy intake. In‐person recall data were combined for comparison with the telephone recalls. No significant difference was found between the in‐person and telephone recalls for rEI and misreporting. Mean reported energy intake was significantly lower than estimated total energy expenditure for the telephone recalls and combined (lean and obese modes) in‐person recalls. Conclusions: This study found that interviewer body mass index had no impact on self‐reported energy intake during an in‐person MP24R, and that telephone recall data were comparable with in‐person recalls. Underreporting was a widespread problem (~26%) for all modes in this sample.  相似文献

Objective: To examine the reliability and validity of the SenseWear Pro 2 Armband (SWA; Body Media, Pittsburgh, PA) during rest and exercise compared with indirect calorimetry (IC) in obese individuals. Research Methods and Procedures: Energy expenditure was assessed during rest with the SWA and IC in 142 obese adults (37 men and 105 women, BMI = 42.3 ± 7.0) and in 25 lean and overweight adults (BMI = 25.3 ± 3.2) who were used as a comparison group. Twenty‐nine of the obese adults also participated in three separate short exercise sessions including cycle ergometry, stair stepping, and treadmill walking. Results: The repeatability of SWA estimates in obese subjects was high (r = 0.88, p < 0.001). The SWA generally underestimated the resting energy expenditure (REE) (1811 ± 346 vs. 1880 ± 382 kcal/d) and highly overestimated the energy expenditure during the exercise sessions in obese individuals. REE estimations by SWA were significantly correlated with fat‐free mass (r = 0.88, p < 0.001). Bland‐Altman plots based statistical analysis for the estimated REE, and measured IC showed a low agreement (Total Error > 20% but Systematic Error < 5%) between the two methods in obese subjects, although they showed a high correlation and a very good agreement in lean and overweight patients. Discussion: The SWA is an easy to handle, practical, new portable device for measuring energy expenditure. The accuracy of the SWA appeared to be poor in the obese subjects we examined, especially those with high REE both in rest and exercise. We believe that it is necessary to incorporate new, obesity‐specific algorithms in the relative software.  相似文献

Objective: To determine whether activity counts obtained with the Actiwatch monitor are associated with total expenditure and body composition in young children. Research Methods and Procedures: Actiwatch activity monitors were tested in 29 children 4 to 6 years old under field conditions over eight days. Total energy expenditure (TEE) was assessed with the doubly labeled water (DLW) technique. Correlation analyses were used to identify variables related to energy expenditure and percentage body fat. Multiple linear regression analyses were used to examine the variance in TEE and percentage body fat explained by activity counts after adjusting for relevant covariates. Results: Both average total daily activity counts (658, 816 ± 201, 657) and the pattern of activity were highly variable among subjects. TEE was significantly related to lean body mass (r = 0.45) and age (r = 0.48; p < 0.05 for both). Activity counts alone were not associated with TEE. In multiple linear regression analyses, TEE was independently associated with only lean body mass. Percentage fat mass was independently associated with body weight, being a girl, and being white, but not with average total activity counts. Discussion: Activity counts obtained with the Actiwatch under free‐living conditions do not reflect TEE in 4‐ to 6‐year‐old children and are not correlated with percentage fat mass. Therefore, average total activity counts obtained with the Actiwatch may be of limited value in identifying children at risk for becoming obese.  相似文献

Objective: Previous results from this laboratory suggest that a 1‐year dairy intake intervention in young women does not alter fat mass. The objective of this study was to determine the impact of the 1‐year dairy intervention 6 months after completion of the intervention. Research Methods and Procedures: Previously, normal‐weight young women (n = 154) were randomized to one of three calcium intake groups: control (<800 mg/d), medium dairy (1000 to 1100 mg/d), or high dairy (1300 to 1400 mg/d) for a 1‐year trial (n = 135 completed). In the current study, 51 women were assessed 6 months after completion of the intervention trial. Body compositions (body fat, lean mass) were measured using DXA. Self‐report questionnaires were utilized to measure activity and dietary intake (kilocalories, calcium). Results: The high‐dairy group (n = 19) maintained an elevated calcium intake (1027 ± 380 mg/d) at 18 months compared with the control group (n = 18, 818 ± 292; p = 0.02). Mean calcium intake over the 18 months predicted a negative change in fat mass (p = 0.04) when baseline BMI was controlled in regression analysis (model R2 = 0.11). 25‐Hydroxyvitamin D levels were correlated with fat mass at each time‐point (baseline, r = ?0.41, p = 0.003; 12 months, r = ?0.42, p = 0.002; 18 months, r = ?0.32, p = 0.02) but did not predict changes in fat mass. Discussion: Dietary calcium intake over 18 months predicted a negative change in body fat mass. Thus, increased dietary calcium intakes through dairy products may prevent fat mass accumulation in young, healthy, normal‐weight women.  相似文献

Objective: To determine the role of total energy expenditure (TEE) and its components in the ability of collared lemmings to increase weight in response to a decrease in photoperiod. Research Methods and Procedures: Energy expenditure was measured by 24‐hour indirect calorimetry concurrent with food‐intake studies. TEE and resting and nonresting energy expenditure (REE and NREE, respectively) were adjusted for body weight by analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). Uncoupling protein 1 (Ucp1) mRNA levels from interscapular brown adipose tissue were determined by Northern blot. Results: TEE and REE of lemmings exposed to a short photoperiod for 10 days were significantly lower than that of lemmings exposed to a long photoperiod (p < 0.05), whereas NREE was not significantly different (p = 0.44). Ucp1 mRNA levels in interscapular brown adipose tissue were 50% lower in short‐ vs. long‐photoperiod lemmings (p < 0.01). Ucp1 mRNA levels were positively related to REE (r2 = 0.79, p < 0.01). After adjustment of REE for differences in Ucp1 mRNA levels, there was no longer a significant difference attributable to photoperiod treatment (p = 0.54). Discussion: The results of this study indicate that the increase in body mass that occurs when collared lemmings are exposed to a short photoperiod may be primarily fueled by a decrease in REE and is correlated with a decrease in Ucp1 mRNA levels.  相似文献

Objective: Our goal was to compare the effects of mandatory consumption of commercial snack products (CSPs) on energy intakes and energy balance in free‐living adults and to assess the interaction between habitual level of CSP consumption and the interventions. Research Methods and Procedures: Four groups of 18 subjects (lean and overweight, males and females) were studied using a crossover design. Subjects consumed one type of CSP (high‐carbohydrate, high‐fat, or mixed composition) at three manipulations of energy 0 MJ (control), 1.5 MJ (low‐energy), and 3.0 MJ (high‐energy) each day during three 14‐day interventions. The study design was parallel for type of CSP (macronutrient composition) and within‐subjects for energy level. Subjects self‐recorded food intakes between Days 8 and 14, and body weights were investigator‐recorded on Days 1, 8, and 15 of each intervention period. Daily energy expenditure was estimated by heart rate monitoring. Results: Daily energy intakes increased from 10.4 MJ (control) to 11.1 MJ (low‐energy) and 11.5 MJ (high‐energy) (p < 0.001), resulting in a trend (not significant) for body weight gain. Energy balance was more positive when subjects were not recording their food intakes than when they were (p < 0.001). There was a trend (not significant) for greater increases in energy intake with increasing fat content, and energy density, of the interventions. Frequent CSP consumers compensated more for the interventions than did infrequent CSP consumers (R2 = 0.125, p = 0.003). Discussion: Subjects partially compensated for energy when supplemented with CSPs over 14‐day periods, although this was insufficient to prevent some increase in energy balance. The level of compensation correlated with habitual energy intake from CSPs.  相似文献

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate available variables of a long‐term weight maintenance study to investigate possible factors predisposing to weight regain after a period of weight loss. Research Methods and Procedures: The Maastricht Weight Maintenance Study is an ongoing longitudinal study of healthy men and women (29 men and 62 women; 18 to 65 years of age; BMI = 30.2 ± 3.1 kg/m2). A variety of parameters were measured before and after a very‐low‐energy diet and after a follow‐up of at least 2 years. Results: Mean weight loss was 7.9 ± 3.6 kg, and percent weight regain was 113.8 ± 98.1%. Percent BMI regain was negatively associated with an increase in dietary restraint (r = ?0.47, p < 0.05). Percent weight regain was negatively correlated with baseline resting metabolic rate (r = ?0.38, p = 0.01) and baseline fat mass (r = ?0.24, p = 0.05) and positively correlated with the magnitude of change in body weight (BW) expressed as maximum amplitude of BW (r = 0.21, p < 0.05). In addition, amplitude of BW was positively correlated with the frequency of dieting (r = 0.57, p < 0.01). Discussion: The best predictors for weight maintenance after weight loss were an increase in dietary restraint during weight loss, a high baseline resting metabolic rate, a relatively high baseline fat mass favoring a fat‐free mass–sparing effect during weight loss, a rather stable BW, and a low frequency of dieting. Therefore, BW maintenance after BW loss seems to be a multifactorial issue, including mechanisms that regulate an individuals’ energy expenditure, body composition, and eating behavior in such a way that energy homeostasis is maintained.

Objective: The main determinants of daily energy expenditure are body size and physical activity. Activity energy expenditure is the most variable component of total energy expenditure. It was assessed whether the physical activity level in confined conditions is an indicator of free‐living physical activity. Research Methods and Procedures: Activity energy expenditure was measured over 1 day in a confined environment of a respiration chamber (floor space, 7.0 m2), where activities were restricted to low‐intensity activities of daily living, and over 2 weeks in a free‐living environment using doubly labeled water. Subjects were 16 women and 29 men (age, 31 ± 10 years; BMI, 24.2 ± 2.7 kg/m2). Results: The free‐living activity level of the subjects, as a multiple of resting energy expenditure, was 1.76 ± 0.13. Activity energy expenditure in the chamber was 47 ± 13% of the value in daily life, and the two values were correlated (r = 0.50, p < 0.001; partial correlation corrected for age, gender, and BMI: 0.40, p < 0.01). The chamber value explained 25% of the total variance in free‐living activity energy expenditure. Discussion: The activity level of a subject under sedentary conditions is an indicator of activity energy expenditure in daily life, showing the importance of nonexercise activity for daily energy expenditure.  相似文献

Objective: To test the hypothesis that low adiponectin is associated with low fat oxidation in humans. Research Methods and Procedures: We measured plasma adiponectin concentrations in 75 healthy, nondiabetic Pima Indians (age, 28 ± 7 years; 55 men and 20 women; body fat, 29.7 ± 7.5%) and 18 whites [(age, 33 ± 8 years; 14 men and 4 women; body fat, 28.2 ± 10.8% (means ± SD)] whose body composition was measured by DXA and 24-hour energy expenditure (24-hour EE) by a respiratory chamber. Respiratory quotient (an estimate of whole-body carbohydrate/lipid oxidation rate) was calculated over 24 hours (24-hour RQ). Results: Before correlational analyses, waist-to-thigh ratio (WTR) and percentage of body fat (PFAT) were adjusted for age, sex, and race; 24-hour EE was adjusted for fat mass and fat-free mass, and 24-hour RQ were adjusted for energy balance. Plasma adiponectin concentrations were negatively correlated with WTR (r = −0.42, p < 0.0001) and PFAT (r = −0.46, p < 0.0001). There was no correlation between plasma adiponectin concentrations and 24-hour RQ, (r = 0.09, p = 0.36) before or after adjustment for PFAT (r = 0.001, p = 0.99, respectively, partial correlation), and no correlation was found between plasma adiponectin concentrations and 24-hour EE (r = −0.12, p = 0.27). Discussion: Our cross-sectional data do not suggest physiological concentrations of fasting plasma adiponectin play a role in the regulation of whole-body fat oxidation or energy expenditure in resting conditions. Whether administration of adiponectin to individuals with low levels of this hormone will increase their fat oxidation rates/energy expenditure remains to be established.  相似文献

We have previously shown that a higher 24‐h respiratory quotient (24‐h RQ) predicts greater ad‐libitum food intake and that nighttime eaters (NE) ingested more calories during an in‐patient food intake study and gained more weight over time. We investigated whether 24‐h RQ was higher in individuals who exhibited nighttime eating behavior. Healthy nondiabetic Pima Indians (PI; n = 97, 54 male/43 female) and whites (W; n = 32, 22 male/10 female) were admitted to our Clinical Research Unit. After 3 days of a weight maintaining diet, 24‐h energy expenditure (24‐h EE), 24‐h RQ, rates of carbohydrate (CHOX) and lipid oxidation (LIPOX), and spontaneous physical activity (SPA) were measured in a metabolic chamber whereas volunteers were in energy balance and unable to consume excess calories. Individuals subsequently ate ad libitum from a computerized vending machine for 3 days with amount and timing of food intake recorded. Fifty‐five individuals (36%; 39 PI, 16 W) were NE, who ate between 11 pm and 5 am on at least one of the 3 days on the vending machines. There were no differences in BMI or percentage body fat between NE and non‐NE. After adjusting for age, sex, race, fat‐free mass, fat mass, and energy balance, NE had a higher 24‐h RQ (P = 0.01), higher CHOX (P = 0.009), and lower LIPOX (P = 0.03) and higher 24‐h SPA (P = 0.04) compared to non‐NE. There were no differences in adjusted 24‐h EE or sleep RQ between the groups. Individuals with nighttime eating behavior have higher 24‐h RQ, higher CHOX and lower LIPOX, a phenotype associated with increased food intake and weight gain.  相似文献
