Anaerobic co-digestion of algal sludge and waste paper to produce methane   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
The unbalanced nutrients of algal sludge (low C/N ratio) were regarded as an important limitation factor to anaerobic digestion process. Adding high carbon content of waste paper in algal sludge feedstock to have a balanced C/N ratio was undertaken in this study. The results showed adding 50% (based on volatile solid) of waste paper in algal sludge feedstock increased the methane production rate to 1170+/-75 ml/l day, as compared to 573+/-28 ml/l day of algal sludge digestion alone, both operated at 4 g VS/l day, 35 degrees C and 10 days HRT. The maximum methane production rate of 1607+/-17 ml/l day was observed at a combined 5 g VS/l day loading rate with 60% (VS based) of paper adding in algal sludge feedstock. Results suggested an optimum C/N ratio for co-digestion of algal sludge and waste paper was in the range of 20-25/1.  相似文献

The effect of ultrasound and gamma-irradiation used as pre-treatments for the anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge at both mesophilic and thermophilic temperatures was examined. Untreated activated sludge was also subjected to anaerobic digestion at these temperatures as a control. The sonication time was 90 s using a Soniprep 150 (MSE Scientific Instruments) which operated at 23 kHz and had been adjusted to give an output of 47 W and the gamma-irradiation dose was 500 krad. The digesters were operated in a semi-continuous mode, being fed with fresh sludge every 24 h at hydraulic retention times (HRT) of 8, 10 and 12 days. Over the 24 h period the differences between the digesters, in terms of volatile solids (VS) reductions and biogas production, were not statistically significant for any particular set of conditions. Thermophilic digestion performed better than mesophilic digestion in terms of biogas production, VS reductions (except at HRT of 8 days) and specific methane yields and the optimum retention time was 10 days, at both temperatures. When gas production over the initial eight hours (probably the hydrolytic stage) was examined, it was found that the gas production rates for pre-treated sludges were higher than those for untreated sludges. This was most pronounced at thermophilic temperatures and a HRT of 10 days. Sonication did not affect the numbers of faecal coliforms in the sludge. However, gamma-radiation caused a 3-log reduction and, when coupled with mesophilic digestion, gave a product which contained < 100 g(-1) TS. Thermophilic anaerobic digestion produced sludges which contained < 1 g(-1) TS irrespective of any pre-treatment.  相似文献

Laboratory scale two-stage anaerobic digestion process model was operated for 280 days to investigate the feasibility to produce both hydrogen and methane from a mixture feedstock (1:1 (v/v)) of municipal food waste and sewage sludge. The maximum hydrogen and methane yields obtained in the two stages were 0.93 and 9.5 mL/mL feedstock. To eliminate methanogenic activity and obtain substantial hydrogen production in the hydrogen reactor, both feedstock and mixed liquor required treatment. The heat treatment (100 °C, 10 min) for feedstock and a periodical treatment (every 2-5 weeks, either heating, removal of biomass particles or flushing with air) for mixed liquor were effective in different extent. The methane production in the second stage was significantly improved by the hydrogen production in the first stage. The maximum methane production obtained in the period of high hydrogen production was more than 2-fold of that observed in the low hydrogen production period.  相似文献

Anaerobic digestion of organic fraction of municipal solid waste was conducted in pilot-scale reactor based on high-solid combined anaerobic digestion process. This study was performed in two runs. In Run 1 and Run 2, pre-stage flushing and micro-aeration were conducted to determine their effect in terms of enhancing hydrolysis and acidification in ambient condition. In Run 2, after pre-stage, the methane phase (methanogenesis) was started-up after pH adjustment and inoculum addition in mesophilic condition. Acidified leachate produced in pre-stage was used for percolation during active methane phase. At the end of methane phase, air flushing was conducted before unloading the digesters. Hydrolysis and acidification yield of 140 g C/kg TS and 180 g VFA/kg TS were achieved, respectively in pre-stage. Micro-aeration exhibited an equivocal result in terms of enhancing hydrolysis/acidification; however it showed a positive effect in methane phase performance and this needed further investigation. Leachate percolation during methane phase showed an enhanced methanization when compared to the reactors without leachate percolation. After 60 days, 260 l CH(4)/kg VS was obtained. Based on the waste methane potential, 75% biogas conversion and 61% VS degradation were achieved.  相似文献

Anaerobic batch co-digestion of sisal pulp and fish wastes   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Co-digestion of various wastes has been shown to improve the digestibility of the materials and biogas yield. Batchwise digestion of sisal pulp and fish waste was studied both with the wastes separately and with mixtures in various proportions. While the highest methane yields from sisal pulp and fish waste alone were 0.32 and 0.39 m3 CH4/kg volatile solids (VS), respectively, at total solid (TS) of 5%, co-digestion with 33% of fish waste and 67% of sisal pulp representing 16.6% of TS gave a methane yield of 0.62 m3 CH4/kg VS added. This is an increase of 59-94% in the methane yield as compared to that obtained from the digestion of pure fractions at 5% TS.  相似文献

A fermentative hydrogen-producing bacterium, Clostridium tyrobutyricum JM1, was isolated from a food waste treating process using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis (ARDRA). A fixed-bed bioreactor packed with polyurethane foam as support matrix for the growth of the isolate was operated at different hydraulic retention time (HRT) to evaluate its performance for hydrogen production. The reactor achieved the maximal hydrogen production rate of 7.2 l H(2)l(-1)d(-1) at 2h HRT, where hydrogen content in biogas was 50.0%, and substrate conversion efficiency was 97.4%. The maximum hydrogen yield was 223 ml (g-hexose)(-1) with an influent glucose concentration of 5 g l(-1). Therefore, the immobilized reactor using C. tyrobutyricum JM1 was an effective and stable system for continuous hydrogen production.  相似文献

A two-phase anaerobic process to produce hydrogen and methane from potatoes was investigated. In the first phase, hydrogen was produced using heat-shocked sludge. About 12h lag-phase vanished, hydrogen yield increased from 200.4 ml/g-TVS to 217.5 ml/g-TVS and the maximum specific hydrogen production rate also increased from 703.4 ml/g-VSS d to 800.5 ml/g-VSS d when improved substrate was used, in which Cl(-) was substituted for SO(4)(2-). Better performances of 271.2 ml-H(2)/g-TVS and 944.7 ml-H(2)/g-VSS d were achieved when potatoes were pretreated by alpha amylase and glucoamylase. In the second phase, methane was produced from the residual of the first phase using methanogens. The maximum additional methane yield was 157.9 ml/g-TVS and the maximum specific methane production rate was 102.7 ml/g-VSS d. The results showed that the energy efficiency increased from about 20% (hydrogen production process) to about 60%, which indicated the energy efficiency can be improved by combined hydrogen and methane production process.  相似文献

Slurries containing 20% (w/v) coffee waste solids were treated anaerobically in one- and two-phase thermophilic methane fermentation systems (53°C) with or without pH control. In one-phase methane fermentation using a roller bottle reactor, the maximum gas evolution rate of 0.87 l/l·d was achieved during treatment for 91 d. However, this one-phase methane fermentation did not yield reproducible data. In a two-phase methane fermentation system consisting of a completely stirred tank reactor type (CSTR-type) liquefaction reactor without pH control and an anaerobic fluidized bed type gasification reactor, three-repetitions of treatment were conducted. Each treatment was very stable and the average gas evolution rate per volume of the gasification reactor was about 2.4 l/l·d. Two-repetitions of treatment were then done while controlling pH in the liquefaction at more than 6. The average gas evolution rate per volume of gasification reactor was found to have increased to 10.2 l/l·d, a value which corresponded to 0.84 l/l·d per total volume, including the liquefaction reactor. It was observed that treatment in a two-phase methane fermentation could be repeated in a stable fashion even in the closed system without discharging anything but the coffee waste residues.  相似文献

Characterization of food waste as feedstock for anaerobic digestion   总被引:13,自引:0,他引:13
Food waste collected in the City of San Francisco, California, was characterized for its potential for use as a feedstock for anaerobic digestion processes. The daily and weekly variations of food waste composition over a two-month period were measured. The anaerobic digestibility and biogas and methane yields of the food waste were evaluated using batch anaerobic digestion tests performed at 50 degrees C. The daily average moisture content (MC) and the ratio of volatile solids to total solids (VS/TS) determined from a week-long sampling were 70% and 83%, respectively, while the weekly average MC and VS/TS were 74% and 87%, respectively. The nutrient content analysis showed that the food waste contained well balanced nutrients for anaerobic microorganisms. The methane yield was determined to be 348 and 435 mL/gVS, respectively, after 10 and 28 days of digestion. The average methane content of biogas was 73%. The average VS destruction was 81% at the end of the 28-day digestion test. The results of this study indicate that the food waste is a highly desirable substrate for anaerobic digesters with regards to its high biodegradability and methane yield.  相似文献

Studies on the performance of a laboratory scale upflow anaerobic solids removal (UASR) digester were carried out using sand-laden cow manure slurries having total solids (TS) concentration as 50 and 100 g/l. Hydraulic retention time (HRT) was maintained as 32.4 days, which resulted in the volatile solids (VS) loading rates of 1 and 1.64 g/l d. The UASR system was designed to remove sand from the manure slurry, while anaerobically digesting biodegradable solids inside a single reactor. To enhance the contact of microorganisms and substrate, the liquor from the top of the digester was recirculated through the bed of settled solids at its bottom. Volatile solids reduction through this process was observed to be 62% and 68% in the case of feed slurries having TS concentration as 50 and 100 g/l (referred in the text as 5% and 10% feed slurries), respectively. The methane production rates were observed to be 0.22 and 0.38 l/l d, while methane yield was 0.21 and 0.27 l CH4/g VS loaded, for 5% and 10% feed slurries, respectively. This indicates that the increase in the VS loading had a positive impact on methane production rate and methane yield. It would be of interest to study the performance of a UASR digester at higher solids loadings and with longer solids retention times. Nonetheless, the presented study showed that sand-laden manure slurries can be successfully digested in a UASR digester producing methane energy equivalent to 4 kW h per m3 of digester volume per day.  相似文献

The present study focuses on the exploitation of sweet sorghum biomass as a source for hydrogen and methane. Fermentative hydrogen production from the sugars of sweet sorghum extract was investigated at different hydraulic retention times (HRT). The subsequent methane production from the effluent of the hydrogenogenic process and the methane potential of the remaining solids after the extraction process were assessed as well. The highest hydrogen production rate (2550 ml H(2)/d) was obtained at the HRT of 6h while the highest yield of hydrogen produced per kg of sorghum biomass was achieved at the HRT of 12h (10.4l H(2)/kg sweet sorghum). It has been proved that the effluent from the hydrogenogenic reactor is an ideal substrate for methane production with approximately 29l CH(4)/kg of sweet sorghum. Anaerobic digestion of the solid residues after the extraction process yielded 78l CH(4)/kg of sweet sorghum. This work demonstrated that biohydrogen production can be very efficiently coupled with a subsequent step of methane production and that sweet sorghum could be an ideal substrate for a combined gaseous biofuels production.  相似文献

Enterobacter cloacae IIT-BT08 was found to produce both !-amylase and hydrogen in a batch system using soluble starch as substrate. Incubation time, temperature, pH and substrate concentration for the maximum !-amylase activity (130 U/ml) were 8 h, 37 °C, 6.00 and 10 g/l of soluble potato starch respectively. However, the optimum temperature and pH for the crude !-amylase activity were 60 °C and 4 respectively. The maximum rate of hydrogen production was observed at 10th h of fermentation and corresponding hydrogen yield was 7.6 mmol H2/g soluble potato starch.  相似文献

Anaerobic co-digestion is a well established process for treating many types of organic wastes, both solid and liquid. In this study we have investigated, on a laboratory scale, the anaerobic co-digestion of olive mill wastewater (OMW) with olive mill solid waste (OMSW) using semi-continuous, feeding, tubular digesters operated at mesophilic temperatures. Each digester was fed with an influent, composed of OMW and OMSW, at an organic loading rate (OLR) varying between 0.67 and 6.67 g COD/l/d. The hydraulic retention times (HRT) were 12, 24 and 36 days. The TCOD concentrations of OMW used as the main substrate were 24, 56 and 80 g COD/l; the amount of the dry OMSW used as a co-substrate was fixed to approximately 56 g/l of OMW. The results indicated that the best methane production was about 0.95 l/l/day obtained at an OLR = 4.67 g COD/l/d, corresponding to influent TCOD = 56 g COD/l at an HRT = 12d. In contrast, the maximum TCOD removal efficiency (89%) was achieved at an OLR = 0.67 g COD/l/d, corresponding to influent TCOD = 24 g COD/l at an HRT = 36 d. Moreover, the inhibition of biogas production was observed at the highest OLR studied.  相似文献

Efficient conversion of wheat straw wastes into biohydrogen gas by cow dung compost was reported for the first time. Batch tests were carried out to analyze influences of several environmental factors on biohydrogen production from wheat straw wastes. The performance of biohydrogen production using the raw wheat straw and HCl pretreated wheat straw was then compared in batch fermentation tests. The maximum cumulative hydrogen yield of 68.1 ml H2/g TVS was observed at 126.5 h, the value is about 136-fold as compared with that of raw wheat straw wastes. The maximum hydrogen production rate of 10.14 ml H2/g TVS h was obtained by a modified Gompertz equation. The hydrogen content in the biogas was 52.0% and there was no significant methane observed in this study. In addition, biodegradation characteristics of the substrate were also discussed. The experimental results showed that the pretreatment of the substrate plays a key role in the conversion of the wheat straw wastes into biohydrogen by the composts generating hydrogen.  相似文献

In this study, the behaviour, and leachate and gaseous emissions during the initial phases of landfilling mechanically (M) and mechanically-biologically (MB) treated municipal solid waste residuals in northern climatic conditions was compared using two landfill lysimeters (112 m3). The results demonstrate that the strong acid phase of M residuals degradation lasts at least 2 years, while in the MB residuals the acid phase lasts only a few months. The SCOD and NH4-N concentrations varied 20-100g/l and 600-1800 mg/l in M leachate and 1-4 g/l and 100-400mg/l in MB leachate, respectively. The leaching of SCOD was approximately 40-fold (24.2 and 0.6 kg/t TS) and leaching of NH4-N approximately 5-fold (356 and 60 g/t TS) from the M than MB residuals; thus the effect of biological stabilisation was more marked on the leaching of SCOD than of NH4-N. Moreover gas (methane, carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide) emissions were several-fold higher from the M than MB residuals.  相似文献

Different feeding approaches were applied to a 5 l anaerobic digester in order to improve the biogas production. During operation, the reactor was fed with a mixture (9.7% w/v total solids (TS) and 7.6% w/v volatile solids (VS) in average) of pig manure with fish oil waste and waste from bentonite of edible oil filtration process, at different intervals of 24, 12 and 4 h at 15 days of hydraulic retention time. Production and quality of the biogas were practically constant at 183.7 ml (average) of biogas per gram of volatile solids available in the reactor per day, and the best biogas composition was 73.6% v/v CH4 and 26.4% v/v CO2.  相似文献

The effects of leachate recirculation and the recirculation rate on the anaerobic treatment of domestic solid waste was investigated in three simulated landfill anaerobic bioreactors. A single pass reactor was operated without leachate recirculation while the other two reactors were operated with leachate recirculation. The leachate recirculation rate was 9 l/day (13% of the reactor volume) in Reactor9, while the recirculation rate was 21 l/day (30% of the reactor volume), in Reactor21. pH, chemical oxygen demand (COD), volatile fatty acids (VFA), ammonium–nitrogen (NH4–N) total and methane gas measurements in leachate samples were regularly monitored. After 220 days of anaerobic incubation, it was observed that the pH, COD, VFA concentrations, methane gas productions and methane percentages in Reactor9 were better than the single pass reactor and Reactor21. When the leachate recirculation rate was increased to three times a decrease in pH, and an increase in VFA and COD concentrations were observed in Reactor21. The COD values were measured as 47 000, 39 000 and 52 000 mg/l while the VFA concentrations were 15 000, 13 000 and 21 000 mg/l, respectively, in single pass, Reactor9 and Reactor21 after 220 days of anaerobic incubation. The values of pH were 5.89, 6.44 and 6.16, respectively, after anaerobic incubation. The mean methane percentages of single pass reactor, Reactor9 and Reactor21 were 30, 50 and 40%, respectively, after 50 days of incubation. Leachate recirculation reduced the waste stabilization time and was effective in enhancing methane gas production and improving leachate. However, leachate recirculation was not effective in removing ammonia from the leachate. The amounts of COD recovered by methane were 62.9, 162.3 and 94.6 g for single pass, Reactor9 and Reactor21, respectively, at the end of 220 days of anaerobic incubation.  相似文献

The technical feasibility of adopting the fixed-film reactor concept for biogas production from screened dairy manure was investigated. The methane production capability of laboratory-scale 4-L anaerobic reactors (conventional and fixed-film) receiving screened dairy manure and operated at 35 degrees C was compared. Dairy manure filtrate with 4.4% total solids (TS) and 3.4% volatile solids (VS) (average value) was prepared from 1:1 manure-water slurry. The feed material was added intermittently at loading rates ranging from 2.34 to 25 and 2.25 to 785 g VS/L d, respectively, for the conventional and fixed-film reactors. Maximum methane production rate (L CH(4)/L d) for the conventional reactor was 0.63 L CH(4)/L d achieved at a 6-day hydraulic retention time (HRT). For the fixed-film reactor the maximum production rate was 3.53 L CH(4)/L d when operated at a loading rate of 262 g VS/L d (3 h HRT). The fixed-film reactor was capable of sustaining a loading of 785 g VS/L d (1 h HRT). The fixed-film reactor performed much better than the conventional reactors. These results indicate that a large reduction of required reactor volume is possible through application of a fixed-film concept combined with a liquid-solid separation pretreatment of dairy manure.  相似文献

Rhodobacter sphaeroides O.U. 001 is able to produce hydrogen anaerobically upon illumination. The cells were screened for the presence of valuable by-products such as poly-β-hydroxy (PHB) butyric acid aiming to improve the feasibility of the system. Also waste water from a sugar refinery was used for bacterial growth to further increase the feasibility. Under aerobic conditions the standard growth media containing -malic acid and sodium glutamate in 7.5/10 and 15/2 molar ratios and a medium containing 30% waste water from sugar refinery were used. In this case the maximum concentration of PHB produced were approximately 0.2 g l−1 in both of the standard media whereas it was 0.3 g l−1 in medium containing 30% waste water. By using the medium containing 30% waste water, PHB and hydrogen productions were determined under anaerobic conditions. The maximum concentration of PHB produced was around 0.5 g l−1 and the amount of gas collected was 35 ml in 108 h. From these results it can be concluded that PHB can be collected during hydrogen production. The use of waste water from sugar refinery increased the yield.  相似文献

Laboratory studies were undertaken to evaluate the effect of microbial stimulants Aquasan and Teresan, on biogas yields from cattle dung and combined residues of cattle dung and kitchen waste, respectively. The addition of single dose of Aquasan at the rate of 10, 15 and 20 ppm to cattle dung on the first day of incubation resulted in increased gas yields ranging between 45.1 and 62.1 l/kg dry matter. Subsequent addition of Aquasan at 15 and 20 ppm dosage after a period of 15 days increased the gas yields by 15-16%. The gas production was found to be optimum at a dosage level of 15 ppm and was 39% and 55% higher with single and dual additions, respectively, than untreated cattle dung. In another bench scale study (1:1 dry matter) the addition of Teresan at 10 ppm concentration to the mixed residues of cattle dung and kitchen wastes at different solids concentration, produced 34.8% more gas (272.4 l/kg d.m.) than the uninoculated mixture at 15% TS concentration (202.4 l/kg d.m.).  相似文献
