In this paper the plant described by James Backhouse in Australia and sent by him to England as a species of Wisteria Nutt. is revealed to be a member of the Australasian genus Callerya Endl. The plant named in memory of Backhouse, however, is shown to be a dark flowered cultivar of the North American Wisteria frutescens (L.) Poir. described as W. frutescens var. backhousiana André.  相似文献

North American species of the grass Danthonia bear distinct chasmogamous and cleistogamous flowers. Four taxa occurring in North Carolina (D. compressa, D. epilis, D. sericea, and D. spicata) were examined for variation in the degree of cleistogamy. The flowering culms bear a single terminal panicle consisting of 4 to 12 spikelets of chasmogamous flowers. In each leaf axil, at the nodes of the flowering culm, is a single spikelet of cleistogamous flowers completely surrounded by the leaf sheath. The percentage of cleistogamous flowers produced on any culm depends on the number of chasmogamous and cleistogamous spikelets and the number of flowers in each type of spikelet. All four characters vary among the taxa examined. Danthonia compressa produces, on the average, 50% cleistogamous flowers; D. spicata, 25% cleistogamous flowers; D. sericea and D. epilis, 5% cleistogamous flowers. The degree of cleistogamy in D. spicata is associated with certain habitat features. Populations from mountain sites, disturbed sites, and non-woodland sites produced higher percentages of cleistogamous flowers than did populations from piedmont, undisturbed, and woodland sites, respectively. Grazing may favor increased cleistogamy because cleistogamous flowers are produced lower on the plant. In North Carolina, the most frequently grazed Danthonia taxa also produce the highest percentage of cleistogamous flowers.  相似文献

Use of Capsicum frutescens L. by the Indigenous Peoples of Taiwan and the Batanes Islands. The local nomenclature, use, and distribution of C. frutescens among indigenous peoples in Taiwan and the Batanes Islands were studied. Among Taiwanese indigenous peoples, the distribution, frequency of use, and importance of C. frutescens were found to increase with decreasing latitude, which appears to have affected the local names of Capsicum and C. frutescens. The local name for Capsicum in the Batanes Islands—“sili”—is used by several indigenous peoples in Taiwan, suggesting that Capsicum was brought from the south to the north. Indigenous peoples in Taiwan and the Batanes Islands used C. frutescens fruits as condiments, medicines, ornaments, or for ritual uses; also, they used its leaves for soup. A complex of both green and yellowish-green types possessing ShDH-B was introduced from Indonesia into the Batanes Islands and Taiwan, and later only the type with yellowish-green immature fruit was introduced to the Ryukyu Islands under the bottleneck effect.  相似文献

A hydroponic culture experiment was performed to ascertain whether sediment soluble sulfide at in situ concentrations plays a role in the determination of height forms of Spartina alterniflora in salt marshes of the United States. Additional experiments were conducted for both Spartina cynosuroides and Borrichia frutescens to determine if sulfide also influences the overall distribution of these species in the marsh. In situ soluble sulfide concentrations ranged from 0.02 mm in creek bank sites up to 3.0 mm in the inner marsh. In culture treatments, both plant height and biomass production of S. alterniflora were inhibited at a sulfide concentration as low as 1.0 mm , strongly suggesting a role for sulfide in the determination of height forms in the marsh. Production of S. cynosuroides was inhibited at high sulfide concentrations. However, over a range of concentrations similar to in situ values, no significant reduction in growth was observed, indicating sulfide was not a primary determinant of growth in stands of S. cynosuroides on Sapelo Island, Georgia. A sulfide concentration of 0.5 mm inhibited production in B. frutescens. In situ sulfide concentrations as high as 0.5 mm were found only in mixed stands of Juncus roemerianus and B. frutescens.  相似文献

The random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) technique was used to analyse total genomic DNA of 10 isolates of a new Fusarium oxysporum pathogenic on Argyranthemum frutescens (Paris daisy), by comparing them with representatives of the formae speciales basilici, chrysanthemi, cyclaminis, dianthi, gladioli, lilii, lycopersici, melonis, pisi, radicis‐lycopersici, tracheiphilum, and a non‐pathogenic isolate of F. oxysporum. A close genetic relatedness was observed among most of the new isolates from A. frutescens. These isolates also shared RAPD markers with the tested representatives of the forma specialis chrysanthemi. A single isolate among those tested from diseased A. frutescens was placed in a different cluster, which included representative isolates of forma specialis tracheiphilum. All the new isolates from A. frutescens, with the exception of the single divergent one, could be identified by their characteristic amplification profile, using selected random primers. A rapid protocol for DNA extraction directly from fungal colonies grown on Fusarium selective medium allowed the complete analysis in less than 4 h.  相似文献

The pathogenicity of five isolates of Fusarium oxysporum obtained from infected gerbera (Gerbera jamesonii), chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum morifolium), Paris daisy (Argyranthemum frutescens) and African daisy (Osteospermum sp.) plants was tested on some varieties of the following Compositae hosts: C. morifolium, G. jamesonii, Argyranthemum frutescens (Paris daisy) and Osteospermum sp. and compared with the host range and pathogenicity of an isolate of F. oxysporum f. sp. chrysanthemi obtained from the ATCC collection. The results indicated that isolates of F. oxysporum from G. jamesonii as well as those from A. frutescens and Osteospermum sp. belong to the forma specialischrysanthemi. The isolate from gerbera was virulent on all tested varieties of gerbera, C. morifolium, A. frutescens and Osteospermumsp. Similar results were obtained testing the isolates obtained from A. frutescens and Osteospermumsp. The strain from C. morifolium infected cultivar of gerbera, A. frutescens and Osteospermum sp. The pathogenicity of isolate of F. oxysporum f. sp. chrysanthemi obtained from the ATCC showed a different cultivar range particularly in the case of chrysanthemum and gerbera.  相似文献

Although inbreeding, on average, decreases additive genetic variance, some inbred populations may show an increase in phenotypic variance for some characters. In those populations with increased phenotypic variance, character changes by peak shifts may occur because of the effects of the higher variance on the adaptive landscape. A population's increased phenotypic variance may place it in the domain of attraction of a new adaptive peak or increase the likelihood of a selection-driven peak shift as the landscape of mean fitness flattens. The focus of this study was to test for increased variance, in inbred populations, in a behavioral character involved in adaptive diversification and probably speciation. We examined the effect of inbreeding on feeding responses of the leaf beetle Ophraella communa in a series of inbred lineages across a range of levels of inbreeding (f = 0.25, 0.375, 0.5). We measured the feeding response of inbred lineages of O. communa on its normal host, Ambrosia artemisiifolia, and on two novel plants, Chrysopsis villosa and Iva frutescens, that are the hosts of other Ophraella species. The results show that feeding responses on the different plants are not correlated, indicating that the feeding responses to the different plants are to some degree genetically independent. Despite apparent genetic variation in lineage feeding responses, we could not statistically demonstrate increases in phenotypic variance within the lineages. Thus, the experimental results do not support the idea that host shifts in this beetle evolved by peak shifts in bottlenecked populations.  相似文献

Gene flow, in combination with selection and drift, determines levels of differentiation among local populations. In this study we estimate gene flow in a stream dwelling, flightless waterstrider, Aquarius remigis. Twenty-eight Aquarius remigis populations from Quebec, Ontario, New Brunswick, Iowa, North Carolina, and California were genetically characterized at 15 loci using starch gel electrophoresis. Sampling over two years was designed for a hierarchical analysis of population structure incorporating variation among sites within streams, streams within watersheds, watersheds within regions, and regions within North America. Hierarchical F statistics indicated that only sites within streams maintained enough gene flow to prevent differentiation through drift (Nm = 27.5). Above the level of sites within streams gene flow is highly restricted (Nm ≤ 0.5) and no correlation is found between genetic and geographic distances. This agrees well with direct estimates of gene flow based on mark and recapture data, yielding an Ne of approximately 170 individuals. Previous assignment of subspecific status to Californian A. remigis is not supported by genetic distances between those populations and other populations in North America. Previous suggestion of specific status for south-eastern A. remigis is supported by genetic distances between North Carolina populations and other populations in North America, and a high proportion of region specific alleles in the North Carolina populations. However, because of the high degree of morphological and genetic variability throughout the range of this species, the assignment of specific or subspecific status to parts of the range may be premature.  相似文献

There has been much recent debate on whether physiological tradeoffs in performance across hosts or ecological factors such as predation are the primary determinants of host plant specialization in plant-herbivore interactions. This paper examines the relative role of intrinsic behavioral and physiological factors in host specialization of two species of leaf-feeding beetles (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). Ophraella notulata and Ophraella slobodkini are sister taxa that feed exclusively on the asteraceous plants Iva frutescens and Ambrosia artemisiifolia, respectively. Ambrosia is the ancestral host plant for this pair of beetles. I performed full-sib breeding experiments in both the laboratory and the field to assess mean responses of each species to both its native host and the host of its congener, genetic variation within each species for traits associated with using each host, and tradeoffs in performance across hosts. I reared each beetle species on each host plant and measured larval consumption, survival, development time and growth. I measured only survival and growth in the field. Genetic correlations were calculated to assess tradeoffs in performance across hosts. In the laboratory experiment, larval survival of O. slobodkini on I. frutescens was lower and development time longer than on A. artemisiifolia. Survival of O. notulata on A. artemisiifolia was marginally lower than on I. frutescens while development time did not differ. There was little genetic variation among families in host use traits for either species. None of the estimates of genetic correlations were negative. The results of the field experiment support the results of the laboratory experiment. I conclude that O. notulata, the species with the derived host association, retains considerable ability to utilize the ancestral host plant, while O. slobodkini, the species witht he ancestral host association, does not show a similar ability to ut ilize the derived host. Tradeoffs in performance across hosts were not documented for either species of Ophraella. That notulata performs so well on A. artemissifolia suggests that intrinsic factors may not provide a sufficient explanation for the host specialization of this species on I. frutescens.  相似文献

Five species (Actaea pachypoda, Aralia nudicaulis, Cornus alternifolia, Panax quinquefolius, and Symplocarpus foetidus) display a disjunct distribution between the Mountains and Piedmont in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. The Piedmont populations are small and have apparently been isolated from the Mountain populations for several thousand years. Karyotype differences among populations were found only in A. pachypoda, and even in this species the differences were slight. The absence of population differences in four species, and the moderate differentiation found in A. pachypoda, indicate considerable cytological stability in these species.  相似文献

Eoginkgoites is a fan-shaped, imparipinnate leaf with a short rachis and long petiole. It was first described from the Upper Triassic Newark Group of Pennsylvania by Bock who assigned the fossil to the Ginkgoales. The fossil has also been found in the Upper Triassic Chinle Formation in Utah and Arizona and in the Newark Group in North Carolina. Investigation of the well-preserved specimens found in the Chinle Formation shows that the leaf has anastomosing venation, a marginal vein and paracytic (syndetocheilic) stomata. These characters indicate that the leaf is bennettitalean and Eoginkgoites is reassigned to the Bennettitales although its shape is perplexing. Eoginkgoites may be an important index fossil to the lower Upper Triassic (middle Carnian) rocks of North America.  相似文献

We used hand-pollination experiments to test the mating systems of and evaluate limits to seed production in two federally listed endangered plants endemic to the Lake Wales Ridge in Florida, USA: Dicerandra frutescens Shinners ssp. frutescens Huck and D. christmanii Huck and Judd (Lamiaceae). Both are nonclonal, short-lived perennials found in gaps created by disturbance (e.g., fire, roads) in Florida scrub. We found that both species require pollen and insect visitation to produce seeds. We detected pollinator limitation of seed production in D. christmanii but not D. frutescens ssp. frutescens, which we suggest is a function of time-since-disturbance or gap size rather than intrinsic differences between the two species. Both species are self-compatible. Inbreeding depression reduced seed set by 60% in D. frutescens ssp. frutescens but did not occur in D. christmanii. We conclude that pollinator limitation (in fire-suppressed populations of both species) and inbreeding depression (in D. frutescens ssp. frutescens) have the potential to limit seed production in these seed-dependent, rare species. Appropriate fire management should mitigate both of these risks, by maintaining large populations and conditions attractive to pollinators. Although these two species are very similar in reproductive biology, comparisons with other Florida scrub endemics and with rare plants in general suggest that potential threats to conservation via reproductive biology are difficult to predict, depending on combinations of ecology, life-history, and phylogenetic history.  相似文献

Summary Encelia farinosa and Encelia frutescens are drought-decidous shrubs whose distributions overlap throughout much of the Sonoran Desert. During hot and dry periods, leaves of E. farinosa utilize increased leaf reflectance to reduce leaf temperature, whereas leaves of E. frutescens have substantially higher leaf conductances and rely on increased transpirational cooling to reduce leaf temperature. E. farinosa is common on the dry slope microhabitats, whereas E. frutescens occurs only in wash microhabitats where greater soil moisture is available to provide the water necessary for transpirational cooling. E. farinosa tends not to persist in wash microhabitats because of its greater susceptibility to flashfloods. The consequences and significance of increased leaf reflectance versus increased transpirational cooling to leaf temperature regulation are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract. The annual cycle of canopy structure in two mediterranean shrubs in a pioneer zone of the mobile dune system in the Donana National Park, Scrophularia frutescens and Halimium halimifolium, has been analyzed. Destructive methods were used as well as a new non-destructive method, based on frequency analysis of organ distribution within the plant canopy. S. frutescens shows strong seasonal changes of photo-synthetic biomass, but little annual increment in dry weight. In H. halimifolium, seasonal changes are not as strongly differentiated as in S. frutescens, but a higher annual increment is shown. The canopy structure of both species and its temporal changes are compared with existingplant strategy models.  相似文献

The distribution of a rare chloroplast-DNA structural mutation, the loss of a large inverted repeat, has been determined for 95 species representing 77 genera and 25 of the 31 tribes in the legume subfamily Papilionoideae. This mutation, which is regarded as a derived feature of singular origin within the subfamily, marks a group comprising six temperate tribes, the Galegeae, Hedysareae, Carmichaelieae, Vicieae, Cicereae, and Trifolieae, an assemblage traditionally considered to be monophyletic. This mutation also occurs in the chloroplast genome of Wisteria, a member of the tropical tribe Millettieae whose other members so far surveyed lack the mutation. These new DNA data, together with traditional evidence, support the hypothesis that Wisteria is an unspecialized member of a lineage that gave rise to the temperate tribes marked by the chloroplast-DNA mutation; the probable paraphylesis of Millettieae is revealed. Two other tribes, Loteae and Coronilleae (traditionally regarded as a derived element of the aforesaid temperate tribes) do not possess this chloroplast-DNA structural mutation and, therefore, presumably represent a distinct temperate lineage. This hypothesis is supported by additional evidence from pollen, inflorescence, and root-nodule morphology that suggests that the Loteae and Coronilleae share a more recent ancestry with tropical tribes such as Phaseoleae and Millettieae than with other temperate tribes.  相似文献

Summary Tidal flooding is widely believed to be an important determinant of marsh plant distributions but has rarely been tested in the field. In New England the marsh elder Iva frutescens often dominates the terrestrial border of salt marshes and we examined its flood tolerance and distribution patterns. Marsh elders only occur at elevations where their roots are not subject to prolonged water table flooding. Consequently they are found on the terrestrial border of marshes and at lower elevations associated with drainage ditches and locally elevated surfaces. Marsh elders transplanted to elevations lower than they normally occur died within a year with or without neighbors and greenhouse tests revealed that I. frutescens is much less tolerant of flooded soil conditions than plants found at lower marsh elevations. We also manipulated the water table level of field plots and found that increasing or decreasing water table drainage led to enhanced and diminished I. frutescens performance, respectively. Our results demonstrate the importance of water table dynamics in generating spatial patterns in marsh plant communities and provide further evidence that supports the hypothesis that the seaward distributional limits of marsh plant populations are generally dictated by physical processes.  相似文献

We ask whether patterns of genetic variation in a phytophagous insect's responses to potential host plants shed light on the phylogenetic history of host association. Ophraella communa feeds chiefly, and in eastern North America exclusively, on Ambrosia (Asteraceae: Ambrosiinae). Using mostly half-sib breeding designs, we screened for genetic variation in feeding responses to and larval survival on its own host and on seven other plants that are hosts (or, on one case, closely related to the host) of other species of Ophraella. We found evidence for genetic variation in feeding responses to five of the seven test plants, other than the natural host. We found no evidence of genetic variation in feeding responses to two plant species, nor in capacity for larval survival on six. These results imply constraints on the availability of genetic variation; however, little evidence for constraints in the form of negative genetic correlations was found. These results are interpreted in the context of a provisional phylogeny of, and a history of host shifts within, the genus. Ophraella communa does not present evidence of genetic variation in its ability to feed and/or survive on Solidago, even though it is probably descended from a lineage that fed on Solidago or related plants, possibly as recently as 1.9 million years ago. Genetic variation in performance on this plant may have been lost. Based on evidence for genetic variation and on mean performance, by far the greatest potentiality for adaptation to a congener's host was evinced in responses to Iva frutescens, which not only is related and chemically similar to Ambrosia, but also is the host of a closely related species of Ophraella that may have been derived from an Ambrosia-associated ancestor. Genetic variation in O. communa's capacity to feed and/or survive on its congeners' hosts is less evident for plants that do not represent historically realized host shifts (with one exception) than for those that may (but see Note Added in Proof). The results offer some support for the hypothesis that the evolution of host shifts has been guided in part by constrained genetic variation.  相似文献

A new species of Rhodotorula Harrison was recovered in May 1978 from Spanish powdered red pepper (Capsicum frutescens L.) in Madrid, Spain. It could not be identified with any hitherto described species of yeast and it was assigned to the genus Rhodotorula Harrison as representative of a new species on the bases of both its morphological and physiological characteristics, for which the name of Rhodotorula matritense is proposed.  相似文献

A newly abundant Gracilaria species in the sounds of southeastern North Carolina has become a problem for commercial fishing and industries drawing water from the lower Cape Fear River. DNA sequence analyses have shown that this species is Gracilaria vermiculophylla, a taxon originally described from East Asia. Surveys for G. vermiculophylla have shown that it has a discontinuous distribution in the sounds of southeastern North Carolina, and suggest that it is spreading. Gracilaria vermiculophylla meets 6 of the 10 criteria used to help identify invasive species in that it has only recently appeared in southeastern North Carolina; is associated with human mechanisms of dispersal; has a restricted distribution; has disjunct populations in isolated oceans; no means of active dispersal, and an exotic evolutionary origin. The species may also meet two additional criteria as its local range is believed to be expanding, and it is filling a previously unoccupied seasonal niche. These factors taken together strongly suggest that G. vermiculophylla is an invasive species in southeastern North Carolina.  相似文献

The Polygonum hydropiperoides complex includes P. hydropiperoides Michx., P. opelousanum Riddell ex Small, P. setaceum Baldwin ex Ell., and P. hisutum Walter. Studies of morphology, cytology, and crossing compatibility were conducted with specimens from North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. A multivariate cluster analysis using 212 specimens and 34 characters indicated that P. hirsutum and P. setaceum are each morphologically distinct while P. hydropiperoides and P. opelousanum are morphologically indistinct from one another. The chromosome counts of 2n = 20 for P. setaceum and P. hirsutum, and 2n = 40 for P. hydropiperoides and P. opelousanum are the first reported for the respective species. Experimental hybridizations produced the fertile hybrids P. hydropiperoides x opelousanum and P. setaceum × hirsutum. Results of these studies and population structure, habitat, and pollination studies suggest that P. hydropiperoides, P. setaceum, and P. hirsutum are each distinct species while P. opelousanum is indistinct and should be merged with P. hydropiperoides.  相似文献
