A recent article in Evolutionary Applications by LaSharr et al. reports on trends in the size of horns of bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) throughout much of the species’ range. The article concludes that there are “... stable or increasing trends in horn growth over nearly 3 decades in the majority of hunt areas throughout the western U.S. and Canada.” However, the article equates nonsignificance of predominantly negative trends in the areas with the most selective harvest as evidence for the null hypothesis of no trends and also fails to consider well-known and serious biases in the use of data collected in size-regulated hunts. By applying meta-analysis to the estimates reported by LaSharr et al., we show that there has been a pervasive overall trend of declining horn sizes in Alberta, where the combination of horn size-based legality, combined with unrestricted hunter numbers are understood to generate the greatest selective pressures. Given the nature of the biases in the underlying data, the magnitudes of the trends resulting from our re-analysis of LaSharr et al.'s (Evolutionary Applications, 2019, 12 , 1823 ) trend estimates are probably underestimated.  相似文献

The evolutionary origin of the long neck of giraffes is enigmatic. One theory (the 'sexual selection' theory) is that their shape evolved because males use their necks and heads to achieve sexual dominance. Support for this theory would be that males invest more in neck and head growth than do females. We have investigated this hypothesis in 17 male and 21 female giraffes with body masses ranging from juvenile to mature animals, by measuring head mass, neck mass, neck and leg length and the neck length to leg length ratio. We found no significant differences in any of these dimensions between males and females of the same mass, although mature males, whose body mass is significantly (50%) greater than that of mature females, do have significantly heavier (but not longer) necks and heavier heads than mature females. We conclude that morphological differences between males and females are minimal, that differences that do exist can be accounted for by the larger final mass of males and that sexual selection is not the origin of a long neck in giraffes.  相似文献

  1. Anthropogenic impacts to aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems are ubiquitous. Among these, local impacts to freshwater coastal wetlands from recreational boating are potentially severe. We determine the relative contribution of natural factors (local habitat structure and landscape configuration) and estimated impact from anthropogenic factors (i.e. pressure from recreational boating) to odonate community composition.
  2. Odonate adults and exuviae were sampled from 17 islands within the 30 000 islands of the Georgian Bay Region of Lake Huron (Ontario, Canada). These islands experience a gradient of boating pressure from four marinas. The magnitude of impacts due to anthropogenic factors was estimated by marina dock space, proximity to marked boating channels, and proximity to a major highway.
  3. Redundancy analyses and variance partitioning were utilised to quantify the relative influence of local habitat structure, landscape configuration, and anthropogenic pressures on the distribution of 18 odonate species.
  4. Our results show that local habitat structure, landscape configuration, and boating pressures influence odonate community composition. Overall variance in the species composition explained was 36.5% for adults (25.3% landscape configuration and habitat structure, 6.0% boating pressure, 5.2% shared) and 21.9% for exuviae (13.2% landscape configuration and habitat structure, 6.9% boating pressure, 1.8% shared). We found that communities of adults and larvae (sampled as exuviae) are influenced by different factors.
  5. Overall, we find evidence that odonate community composition is affected by boating pressures. This stresses the need to consider not only global‐scale human disturbances in conservation planning but also localised effects which differentially impact major life stages.

The rapid rise of COVID-19 and the governmental response to slow the spread of the pandemic occurred prior to, or during, the opening of the spring wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) hunting seasons (Mar to May 2020) in the United States. The response of fish and wildlife agencies to the pandemic varied throughout the United States during the spring turkey season. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission (NGPC) suspended the sale of non-resident, spring turkey hunting permits on 30 March 2020 in a proactive effort to minimize the spread of COVID-19. In this study, we evaluated the extent that the COVID-19 pandemic affected the spring turkey permit sales and harvest in Nebraska, USA. We combined information from NGPC's electronic licensing system, responses from 2017–2019 spring turkey hunter surveys (pre-pandemic), and responses from the 2020 (during the pandemic) spring turkey hunter survey, which included additional questions about the influence of COVID-19 on respondents' hunting experiences. There was an increase in the number of resident hunters (23%) and resident permits sold (26%) and a decrease in the number of non-resident hunters (−88%) and non-resident permits sold (−89%) in 2020 as compared to the 3 years prior. Further, non-residents, more so than Nebraska residents, claimed that the COVID-19 pandemic affected their spring turkey hunting in their precautions taken, overall satisfaction, pre-season planning for the spring turkey season, and plans made prior to the outbreak. Wildlife agencies should prepare for the potential effects that significant disruptions (like that observed with the COVID-19 pandemic) might have on hunting participation, especially if a significant portion of revenue is derived from non-resident permit sales, and develop plans and policies so that they can react appropriately.  相似文献

This study examined sexual dimorphism of head morphology in the ecologically diverse three‐spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus. Male G. aculeatus had longer heads than female G. aculeatus in all 10 anadromous, stream and lake populations examined, and head length growth rates were significantly higher in males in half of the populations sampled, indicating that differences in head size increased with body size in many populations. Despite consistently larger heads in males, there was significant variation in size‐adjusted head length among populations, suggesting that the relationship between head length and body length was flexible. Inter‐population differences in head length were correlated between sexes, thus population‐level factors influenced head length in both sexes despite the sexual dimorphism present. Head shape variation between lake and anadromous populations was greater than that between sexes. The common divergence in head shape between sexes across populations was about twice as important as the sexual dimorphism unique to each population. Finally, much of the sexual dimorphism in head length was due to divergence in the anterior region of the head, where the primary trophic structures were found. It is unclear whether the sexual dimorphism was due to natural selection for niche divergence between sexes or sexual selection. This study improves knowledge of the magnitude, growth rate divergence, inter‐population variation and location of sexual dimorphism in G. aculeatus head morphology.  相似文献

Labial surface convexity of the maxillary central incisors (ILC) is classified with a new five grade ranked scale. More than 2,000 individuals representing 20 worldwide populations were studied. Principle findings are 1) sexual dimorphism is not significant, 2) antimere asymmetry is moderate, 3) labial convexity is negatively associated (r = ?0.48) with labial surface double-shovelling, and 4) significant differences occur between several populations. Convexity is most marked in African and Asiatic Indian populations, particularly Bushmen. Europeans have intermediate degrees of convexity, and American Indians the least; Eskimos have the highest amount of convexity among Native Americans. Pacific Islanders are intermediate; Melanesians show the strongest expression of incisor labial convexity in the Pacific.  相似文献

Incisor enamel microstructure proved to be a very effective tool for assessment of phylogenetic relationships among the Rodentia. Pauciserial and multiserial Schmelzmuster are clearly distinct by structural characters such as orientation of interprismatic matrix, presence or absence of transition zones between Hunter-Schreger bands (HSB), inclination of HSB, enamel thickness, and others. Pauciserial HSB are structurally very close to the earliest known mammalian HSB found in Paleocene arctocyonids. Biomechanical arguments and outgroup comparison with mixodontians indicate that the pauciserial Schmelzmuster is a symplesiomorphy of the Rodentia. Transitional stages from pauciserial to multiserial Schmelzmuster were observed in middle Eocene ctenodactyloids and from pauciserial to uniserial in middle to late Eocene anomalurids. The multiserial Schmelzmuster is considered a synapomorphy of the Hystricognathi, ctenodactylids, and pedetids. Schmelzmuster evolution reflects the early dichotomy of the Rodentia: In the Asian ctenodactyloid lineage a multiserial Schmelzmuster evolved once and in the North American/European ischyromyoid lineage a uniserial Schmelzmuster developed several times convergently. The pauci- to uniserial Schmelzmuster of the anomalurids excludes a close relationship to the phiomyids, because the ctenodactyloid-phiomyid lineage is characterized by the development of a multiserial Schmelzmuster.  相似文献

Sensilla on the labial and maxillary palp of Carabus lefebvrei Dejean, 1826 larvae were investigated using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Two identical sets of sensilla were present on the tips of both palp pairs, and four morphological types of sensilla were identified: sensilla basiconica types 1 and 2, sensilla coeloconica and sensilla digitiformia. Ultrastructure indicates that the sensilla basiconica type 1 and coeloconica have a chemical role as gustatory and olfactory receptors, respectively, while sensilla basiconica type 2 are mechanoreceptors and the sensilla digitiformia are probably thermo‐ and hygroreceptors. Their function is discussed in relation to specialized prey detection and habitat adaptations.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Changes in resource selection associated with human predation risk may alter elk distributions and availability for harvest. We used Global Positioning System data collected from telemetered female elk (Cervus elaphus) to evaluate effects of refuges (areas where hunting was prohibited), spatial variation in hunting risk, and landscape attributes on resource selection within an established Greater Yellowstone Area, USA, winter range. We also evaluated elk distributions during and outside of a late-season hunting period. Refuge areas and landscape attributes such as habitat type and snow water equivalents (SWE) affected resource selection. Elk selection for flat grasslands increased as SWE increased, likely because these areas were windswept, leaving grasses exposed for foraging. Elk distributions differed during hunting and no-hunting periods. During the hunting period, elk shifted to privately owned refuge areas and the estimated odds of elk occupying refuge areas more than doubled. Risk-driven changes in resource selection resulted in reduced availability of elk for harvest. Elk selection for areas where hunting is prohibited presents a challenge for resource managers that use hunting as a tool for managing populations and influences grazing patterns on private ranchlands.  相似文献

Scientists have long inferred the locations of past treelines from the distribution of deadwood above modern tree boundaries. Although it is recognized that deadwood above treeline may have decayed, the absence of such wood is routinely taken to imply the absence of trees for periods ranging from the past few millennia to the entire Holocene. Reconstructed treeline histories are then explained in terms of such variables as slope, drainage, temperature, solar insolation, and precipitation. While these variables certainly help determine where deadwood is to be found above treeline today, we suggest that they cannot always explain where it is not to be found. In the alpine environments of the western United States, archeological work has established a human presence during nearly the entire Holocene in portions of the Rocky Mountains and for over 5000 radiocarbon years in the Great Basin and Sierra Nevada. We suggest that prehistoric occupations may have stripped deadwood from the landscape in all of these areas. To the extent that this is true, reconstructions of past treelines from deadwood may reflect the human prehistory of an area as much as it reflects treeline history itself. We encourage evaluation of this hypothesis in areas of active dendrochronological and archeological research.  相似文献

Tietê River is one of the main rivers in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. It runs across this state from east to west for 1136 km. The upper reach of the Tietê River is located in the metropolitan region of the city of São Paulo where approximately 60% of the original Atlantic Forest remnants has been converted into rural and urban areas. Ichthyofauna of the upper reaches of the rivers is usually characterized by a high level of endemism, small fish with restricted geographic distribution. A qualitative survey of two main tributaries, Paraitinga and Biritiba Mirim Rivers, and a stretch of the Tietê River was carried out in order to ascertain their fish community composition, compare the former fish data collected in the same area and establish biodiversity conservation research programs. The fish fauna in the three riverine systems comprises 5 orders, 9 families, 20 genus and 28 species. One species, Glandulocauda melanogenys, out of sixteen regarded as strictly endemic to the upper reaches of the Tietê River according to previous data was found among the sampled collections. No established alien species were found despite their presence in the upstream reservoir of the Tietê Rivers. Human disturbances and their impacts on fish diversity are discussed, including their relation to the ecotone habitats.  相似文献

With probably fewer than 3000 individuals alive in the biodiversity hotspot of the Succulent Karoo in southern Africa, populations of the endemic, Giant Quiver Tree, Aloe pillansii, are thought to be declining and thus threatened with extinction. Using repeat photography and field data we investigated the long-term changes in one population of A. pillansii at its type locality, the roughly 100 ha Cornell’s Kop in the Richtersveld, South Africa. There are currently 75 individuals alive at this site. Of these, 44% are <1 m in height (seedlings), 4% are 1–3 m (juveniles) and 52% are >3 m (adults). An analysis of 14 repeat photographs shows that since 1937 an average of 1.4% of the plants >3 m in height has died annually. At this rate all the remaining 39 plants on Cornell’s Kop in this size class will be dead in 71 years. The relative paucity of plants in the 1–3 m size classes could be explained by several factors including plant theft, animal damage and unfavourable recruitment conditions during the first 80 years of the 20th century. Annual growth rates decrease as plants age. Individuals <1 m in height grow at 42.5 mm yr−1 while plants 1–3 m and those >3 m grow at 31.0 and 16.4 mm yr−1 respectively. At 8 m, the tallest plant on Cornell’s Kop could be as old as 382 years and thus to maintain itself at this site, A. pillansii would only need to recruit relatively infrequently. The relatively high proportion of seedlings suggests that conditions have recently been favourable for recruitment at this site. Seedling ages, estimated from their heights, indicate that over 50% of the plants <1 m in height germinated 5–10 years ago. This is consistent with local rainfall records which show that rainfall was consistently above the long-term annual average of 75 mm during this period. However, the loss of six seedlings from the population in the last 5 years, probably due to grazing or theft, suggests that without intervention this species will not survive on Cornell’s Kop.  相似文献

A sample of 192 male propositi with at least one ULI either missing or reduced has been compared with 197 male controls in terms of the morphology of the other teeth. Every class of propositi exhibits modifications in the following characters: Significant differences between propositi and controls were found for molar cusp number and groove pattern, particularly in the lower first molar and in propositi with reduced ULI. Significant differences between propositi and controls were also found with respect to caniniform pattern of the lower first premolar. The Carabelli's cusp is rarer in propositi. A hypothesis to account for these observations is proposed.  相似文献

Previous studies have proposed terrestrial amphipods as potential bioindicators of forest condition. In order to investigate the response of the exotic terrestrial amphipod Talitroides topitotum (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Talitridae) to anthropogenic disturbances and its potential as a bioindicator, we compared its abundance among three forest reserves in southeastern Brazil, under different types and intensities of disturbance. We observed significantly higher abundances in disturbed sites compared to undisturbed sites in two of the reserves sampled, corroborating previous studies. In the third reserve, in which both forest disturbance and the abundance of amphipods were much lower than in the other two reserves, there was no significant difference between the sampling sites. We also speculate about the potential use of terrestrial amphipods as global indicators of forest disturbance.  相似文献

Climatic determinism is an established hypothesis to explain phenotypic selection of hominine physique. Adaptations to heat and cold stress are, however, probably physiological rather than morphological. This paper advances an alternative hypothesis which relegates the influence of the climate to an indirect role only. Athletes select themselves into events for which their physiques are appropriate. ‘Field eventers’ are, in Sheldon's terminology, mesomorphic and ectopenic (muscular and lacking in linearity). ‘Track eventers’ other than sprinters, have balanced physiques and are ectomorphic (linear). Distance runners are usually small and walkers tall. All are endopenic (lacking in the fat component). The physique of the northern (Inuit and Gurkhas) and southern (Bantu and San) study populations had morphological affinities with the physiques of the field and track eveters respectively. Northern populations, hunting megafauna over hilly terrain and sometimes through snow, need physiques of strength in body and leg. Southern populations, running down medium-size game, need the physique of distance runners. The physique of these contemporary populations may therefore be explained in terms of adaptations to the recent demands of hunting a particular range of fauna in a given physicogeographical environment. The pleomorphism and relative endomorphy of the White subjects can be explained by the relative sedentism associated with the adoption of agriculture. The hypothesis also explains the extreme physiques of Pygmies and Nilotics. The thermoregulatory and the alternative ‘task demand’ hypotheses, however, are not incompatible. The small size of the San hunter, for example, whilst having an undoubted biomechanical advantage, will assist rather than hinder thermoregulation.  相似文献

The fish assemblage of the Mondego estuary was studied from June 2003 to May 2004. Five areas with different environmental conditions were sampled monthly, using a 2 m beam trawl (5 mm mesh size at the cod end). To complement information, sampling was also performed, seasonally, using a 7 m otter trawl with a 10 mm mesh size. Thirty-two species were identified. Dicentrarchus labrax, Pomatoschistus microps, Pomatoschistus minutus, Solea solea, Platichthys flesus and Diplodus vulgaris were the most abundant species. Marine juvenile migrants had the highest number of species, thirteen, followed by estuarine residents with eight species. Marine species that use the estuary as nursery grounds were the most abundant in terms of density and biomass. In spring and summer, juveniles occur in the upper, oligohaline areas, but afterwards, in autumn and winter, they tend to disperse to the middle and lower areas, with higher marine influence. Comparing the results obtained in this study with those reported in the early 1990’s, a marked decrease in species richness can be noticed, which is probably due to anthropogenic factors, namely an increase in depth of the main channel and intense euthrophication processes in the middle and upper areas.  相似文献

Although the frequently large variance in relative male fertilizationsuccess when females are mated by more than 1 male has beenappreciated for some time, the factors that influence relativepaternity are still poorly understood. Recently, experimentalevidence that morphology of male genitalia influences fertilizationsuccess has been documented in 2 water striders, a dung beetle,and a leaf beetle. We explored the role of male genital morphologyin postcopulatory sexual selection in the oriental beetle. Wemated females to 2 males in succession and assessed relativepaternity by the sterile male technique. Morphology of the malegenitalia was found to strongly influence relative paternitybut only for the first male to mate. Male body size influencedrelative fertilization success as well, but again, only forthe first male; surprisingly, smaller males achieved higherpaternity when mating first. We also found suggestive evidencethat copula duration of both the first and second male to mateinfluenced paternity. Other factors, including female size anddegree of asymmetry of hind tibiae length of males had no effecton relative fertilization success. Our results for the orientalbeetle are novel among sperm precedence studies for 2 reasons:1) traits of the first male appear to be more important in influencingpaternity than those of the second, and 2) smaller, not larger,males achieved greater relative paternity. Our results alsocontribute to the growing body of empirical evidence in supportof the hypothesis that male genitalia evolve by postcopulatorysexual selection.  相似文献

Sociobiological theory predicts that humans should not cooperate with large groups of unrelated individuals. This prediction is based on genetic models that show that selection acting on variation between large unrelated groups will generally be much weaker than selection acting on variation between individuals. Recently, several authors have presented related models of human evolution that integrate cultural and genetic transmission of behavior. We show that in such models group selection is potentially a strong force. Data on ethnocentrism is examined in the context of these results.  相似文献
