Extinction affected food web structure in paleoecosystems. Recent theoretical studies that examined the effects of extinction intensity on food web structure on ecological time scales have considered extinction to involve episodic events, with pre-extinction food webs becoming established without dynamics. However, in terms of the paleontological time scale, food web structures are generated from feedback with repeated extinctions, because extinction frequency is affected by food web structure, and food web structure itself is a product of previous extinctions. We constructed a simulation model of changes in tri-trophic-level food webs to examine how continual extinction events affect food webs on an evolutionary time scale. We showed that under high extinction intensity (1) species diversity, especially that of consumer species, decreased; (2) the total population density at each trophic level decreased, while the densities of individual species increased; and (3) the trophic link density of the food web increased. In contrast to previous models, our results were based on an assumption of long-term food web development and are able to explain overall trends posited by empirical investigations based on fossil records.  相似文献

Partial reinforcement (PR) effects on animal locomotor behavior were studied in the golden hamster, using food-hoarding activity as a reinforcer. The first experiment demonstrated that hoarding reinforces a running response towards the goal section of a straight-alley runway, and that no such learning occurs when sated hamsters were not allowed to hoard food. However, a second experiment using various partial reinforcement schedules and a continuous reinforcement schedule did not give any evidence for the existence of a partial reinforcement acquisition effect (PRAE). The third experiment confirmed these results with an extended training procedure and showed a slight partial reinforcement extinction effect (PREE) mainly in the first sessions of the extinction phase.  相似文献

Young male chicks were trained to run for a food reward in a runway; half the sample were subsequently injected with testosterone oenanthate (Ts) and half with the oil vehicle only (Cs). Two days later, they were given a series of tests in the runway to investigate the effect which changing the colour or pattern of either the runway walls or the food dish had on their times to run and feed continuously. In two experiments, it was generally found that Ts showed more pronounced decreases in running times when the colour or pattern of the food dish was changed but Cs showed more pronounced decreases in running times following changes in the walls of the runway. These results supported predictions derived from the hypothesis of Andrew (1972a) that testosterone increases persistence of ‘activated search specifications’. Alternative possible explanations in terms of fear, response perseveration, or attention-switching were briefly discussed, and it was concluded that these could not account for the present results and those found in related studies.  相似文献

There is a strong trend of declining populations in many species of both animals and plants. Dwindling numbers of species can eventually lead to their functional extinction. Functional, or ecological, extinction occurs when a species becomes too rare to fulfill its ecological, interactive role in the ecosystem, leading to true (numerical) extinction of other depending species. Recent theoretical work on food webs suggests that the frequency of functional extinction might be surprisingly high. However, little is known about the risk of functional species extinctions in networks with other types of interactions than trophic ones. Here, we explore the frequency of functional extinctions in model ecological networks having different proportions of antagonistic and mutualistic links. Furthermore, we investigate the topological relationship between functionally and numerically extinct species. We find that (1) the frequency of functional extinctions is higher in networks containing a mixture of antagonistic and mutualistic interactions than in networks with only one type of interaction, (2) increased mortality rate of species having both mutualistic and antagonistic links is more likely to lead to extinction of another species than to extinction of the species itself compared to species having only mutualistic or antagonistic links, and (3) trophic distance (shortest path) between functionally and numerically extinct species is, on average, longer than one, indicating the importance of indirect effects. These results generalize the findings of an earlier study on food webs, demonstrating the potential importance of functional extinction in a variety of ecological network types.  相似文献

Pigeons accustomed to food reinforcement for responding in the presence of a 25-Hz flickering light were exposed to several sets of flicker-frequency stimuli arranged as increasing and decreasing series. In the first experiment, food was occasionally delivered for key pecks during 30-s periods of 25-Hz flicker appearing at the beginning, midway, and at the end of an ascending and descending series of nine frequencies, ranging from 13 to 37 Hz. These stimuli appeared for 15-s periods with no food available (extinction). Gradients of responding to flicker values in the ascending series differed from those in the descending series, showing displacements in peak responding toward the lower and higher frequency values, respectively. The same effects occurred when the sequence was changed so that a descending series was followed by an ascending series of frequencies. These effects are consonant with an adaptation level (AL) interpretation and were replicated in a second experiment in which durations of the extinction presentations were increased to 30s. In a final condition, only a descending series was presented and displacement of peak responding from 25 Hz to a higher frequency stimulus, 28 Hz, was observed.  相似文献

Global warming leads to increased intensity and frequency of weather extremes. Such increased environmental variability might in turn result in increased variation in the demographic rates of interacting species with potentially important consequences for the dynamics of food webs. Using a theoretical approach, we here explore the response of food webs to a highly variable environment. We investigate how species richness and correlation in the responses of species to environmental fluctuations affect the risk of extinction cascades. We find that the risk of extinction cascades increases with increasing species richness, especially when correlation among species is low. Initial extinctions of primary producer species unleash bottom-up extinction cascades, especially in webs with specialist consumers. In this sense, species-rich ecosystems are less robust to increasing levels of environmental variability than species-poor ones. Our study thus suggests that highly species-rich ecosystems such as coral reefs and tropical rainforests might be particularly vulnerable to increased climate variability.  相似文献

Alpha and gamma endorphin both inhibited the extinction of a runway task for water reward in water-deprived rats after subcutaneous injections of microgram dosages. At similar doses, these same peptides produced opposing actions on the extinction of a pole-jumping avoidance task: alpha endorphin inhibited and gamma endorphin facilitated extinction. The effects of these peptides on motivated behavior may thus be situation-dependent.  相似文献

Food rewards were given contingent upon the performance of one of three natural responses in adult male pigtail macaques: scratching, yawning, and the facial expression “protruded lips.” Scratching rapidly increased in frequency when it was followed by food, as did variability in form of scratching and one form in particular, using the feet. The facial expression was resistant to the conditioning procedures. Yawning increased in frequency when followed by food, with extinction and reconditioning procedures confirming the establishment of the conditioned response. This is the first report of the conditioning of yawning in primates. Together, the results contribute to the literature on the differential conditionability of different classes of behavior, and suggest the possibility that macaques can voluntarily display “reflexive” acts for social goals.  相似文献

Bilateral ablation of the pallidum halves the duration of extinction of conditioned motor food reflexes and contributes to 30 to 50% extinction of the electro-defensive reflexes. Pallidum functional depression by potassium chloride or novacaine leads to a temporary total depression of conditioned motor food reflexes. Depending on the frequency of pallidum stimulation, synchronization or desynchronization of the cortical bioelectrical activity is observed. Ablation of the pallidum in anaesthetized cats results in a high amplitude and low-frequency cortical activity. Injection of large doses of potassium chloride into the pallidum results in a forced running forward which lasts 30 to 40 min. The pallidum is considreed as a structure controlling the cortex activity, which takes part in the mechanisms of sensory information processes in the course of adaptive behaviour.  相似文献

Food-hoarding provides an adequate motivation in sated hamsters for the acquisition of a two-way running response. This learning was studied using a discrete-trial procedure, in continuous (CR) and partial reinforcement (PR) conditions, with two different inter-trial interval (ITI) lengths. The dependent variables were: the time spent by Ss in the goal section of the runway, and the number of their runs during extinction.The PR training had two effects on goal times: a slow decrease in acquisition on non-reinforced trials, and then a stabilization at this level during the extinction phase, as contrasted with the sudden increase found in CR-trained Ss when they were switched from acquisition to extinction conditions. However, the PR effects on number of runs depended upon ITI length: resistance to extinction of PR-trained Ss was superior to that of CR-trained Ss with spaced, but not with massed, trials. In the latter case, CR-trained Ss persisted as much as did PR-trained Ss. An hypothesis is offered, along the lines of the Frustration theory.  相似文献

目的:观察Orexin受体1对摄食条件反射的调控研究。方法:将40只大鼠随机分为四组,分别为NS/NS组,SB/SB组,NS/SB组,SB/NS组,每组10只大鼠,给予大鼠八组"条件刺激-无条件刺激(CS-US)"训练,给予无条件刺激后立即进行条件刺激,每组进行训练前30 min给予SB或生理盐水(NS)。获得性训练后,给予2组反射消失性训练,即给予8次条件刺激。条件刺激是给予大鼠10 s,2kHZ声音刺激,无条件刺激是直接给予大鼠食物。结果:给予条件刺激后,四组大鼠摄食行为均明显增加,摄食间隔均明显缩短,当条件刺激强度增加时,摄食行为也增加,而预先给予SB,与NS/NS组相比,其余组大鼠摄食行为相对减少(P0.05),摄食间隔增加。消失性训练中,与NS/NS,NS/SB组相比,SB/NS组和SB/SB组大鼠摄食行为明显减少(P0.05)。与其他三组大鼠相比,SB/NS组大鼠摄食间隔缩短。预先给予SB使后两次刺激后摄食间隔明显增加(P0.05)。结论:OX1R信号通路调控摄食反射的产生和消失。  相似文献

Eight pigeons responded in a multiple variable-interval (VI) schedule in which a constant component always delivered 40rft/h, and an alternated component was either rich (200rft/h) or lean (6.67rft/h) in different conditions. Four tests of resistance to change were conducted in each condition: prefeeding, full extinction, constant-component-only extinction, and response-independent food. Resistance to both prefeeding and full extinction in the constant component varied inversely with the reinforcement rate in the alternated component, but resistance to response-independent food did not. The extinction and response-independent food results were consistent with [J. Exp. Psychol.: Anim. Behav. Proc. 25 (1999) 256] behavioral momentum model. Maintaining reinforcement in the alternated component increased resistance to extinction in the constant component, as predicted by the behavioral momentum model but not accounts of multiple-schedule performance based on [J. Exp. Anal. Behav. 13 (1970) 243] equation. Overall, the momentum model gave a good account of the results with the exception of the prefeeding data. Possible ways to reconcile the prefeeding results with behavioral momentum theory are considered.  相似文献

This study reports a rare example where a native herbivorous insect frequently overexploits local populations of its perennial host. Local dynamics of a flightless weevil (Hadramphus spinipennis, Curculionidae) and its host plant (Aciphylla dieffenbachii, Apiaceae) were assessed for one discrete patch. In this main study site local weevil population structure, dynamics and movement were investigated using a capture-recapture study. Local plant dynamics were studied by mapping plant location, size, sex and the phenological stage of each plant. Regional weevil and plant dynamics were studied for six plant patches using line-transect counts to estimate local weevil numbers and repeated counts of the number of flowering adult plants to assess plant numbers. Dispersal was assessed by regularly searching all plant patches for marked weevils that emigrated from the main study site. Prior to extinction, local weevil abundance, survival and recruitment rates increased continuously. At the same time the feeding damage on the plants increased and the area covered by A. dieffenbachii decreased until no plants were left. An increase in weevil abundance was clearly associated with the extinction of the local host plant population. Weevils stayed in their local host plant patch whilst food was available and dispersed only after local extinction of the plant. Over a 4-year period four local population extinctions were observed. This study was too short to allow explicit conclusions to be drawn about the ratio of extinction to colonisation rates for both the weevil and the host plant populations. However, persistence of this locally unstable system appears possible only in a fragmented habitat where asynchrony in local dynamics is maintained.  相似文献

The dynamics of spontaneous electrical activity of the rostral, dorsal, ventral, and caudal parts of the claustrum were studied in chronic experiments on 12 dogs with implanted electrodes during extinction of orienting reactions and during biologically meaningful changes in the animals' functional state. In the animal at rest, electrical activity of the claustrum was similar to that of subcortical structures, but in a state of attention, its activity began to resemble that of the electrocorticogram, in agreement with the view that this nucleus occupies an intermediate position between cortical and subcortical structures. Enhancement of fast activity in the claustrum with the appearance of orienting reactions was expressed more intensively, and during extinction it was preserved for a longer time, in the dorsal and ventral parts of the claustrum than in the rostral and caudal parts, evidence of structural heterogeneity of the nucleus. Under conditions of increased food excitability the amplitude and frequency of the fast waves recorded from the rostral and caudal parts of the claustrum were selectively increased, whereas during reflexes to a rejected stimulus (acids) and in defensive reflexes they were increased in recordings from the dorsal and ventral parts, on which basis the existence of specialized efferent zones participating in biologically different types of activity can be postulated. Enhancement of fast activity in the claustrum during reflexes to food and acid differed in its genesis: The switch from the first to the second took place through a phase of suppression of the first. Differentiation of a food-conditioned stimulus was accompanied by the development of active inhibition in the "food zones" of the claustrum and by enhancement of activity in the "zones of orienting reactions."A. 为研究根田鼠(Microtus oeconomus)对不同类型栖息地的利用强度,于2002-2003年的7-9月在中国科学院海北高寒草甸生态系统定位站地区采用样方法测定了4种类型栖息地(人工耕作地、真草甸、沼泽化草甸、金露梅灌丛)中的3个根田鼠活动强度变量(跑道长度、跑道分叉数、洞口数)。除了跑道长度和跑道分叉数在真草甸和沼泽化草甸问差异不显著外,3活动强度变量在不同类型栖息地间均差异显著,而且变化趋势一致;根田鼠对4类栖息地的利用强度从大到小依次为金露梅灌丛、沼泽化草甸、真草甸、人工耕作地。整体上根田鼠表现为偏好利用食物资源丰富、没有竞争性啮齿类栖息、较为郁闭的栖息地。  相似文献

In nature titi monkeys spend virtually all of their time in trees. Preferences for certain heights above the ground or for trees per se are probably not, however, the immediate causes of this behavior, for animals housed in a large field cage containing many trees spend most of their time on a low-altitude artificial runway system. Further, the animals are not necessarily reluctant to touch the ground. To investigate the importance of perceived substrate structure as a determinant of arboreality, individuals were given opportunities to descend from their home runway and travel to food placed nearby on the ground. The animals travelled along a schematic model of a tree branch rather than across open ground when given a choice of these substrates, but they readily crossed the open ground when it was their only travel option. When the schematic model increased substantially in length and no longer provided a short route to food, it was still the preferred substrate. The results suggest that an abstract representation of a tree branch attracts and guides locomotion in titis, and that responsiveness to substrate characteristics contributes to arboreality in this species.  相似文献

The effects of different doses of lysine vasopressin (LVP) and oxytocin (OXT) were studied on the six-day acquisition or extinction of a food-reinforced classical conditioning reflex (conditional stimulus: light) when intraperitoneal (ip.) injections were carried out 20 min prior to the behavioural sessions. The highest (600 mU/kg) dose of LVP inhibited acquisition, and all LVP doses tested (150, 300 and 600 mU/kg) facilitated the extinction of conditioned behaviour. These same mU doses of OXT did not significantly affect the food-reinforced conditioning, although a consequent tendency towards increased performance (the opposite action to vasopressin) was observed. When 2.5 or 25 micrograms/kg doses of desglycinamide-arginine-vasopressin (DGAVP), a 500 micrograms/kg dose of prolyl-leucyl-glycinamide (PLG) or a 1200 mU/kg dose of OXT was injected during the extinction sessions, 2.5 micrograms/kg DGAVP and 1200 mU/kg OXT significantly facilitated extinction; the other treatments were without effect. LVP in a dose of 300 or 600 mU/kg and OXT in a dose of 300, 600 or 1200 mU/kg did not influence the food intake of 22 h food-deprived rats in a nonconditional situation. The present results indicate that the effects of LVP and OXT on memory display reinforcement-dependent characteristics, and are thus indirect or non-specific in nature.  相似文献

The traditional molecular view of behavior explains extinction as the dissipation or inhibition of strength, formerly built up by contiguous reinforcement. In obstinate opposition to this explanation was the partial-reinforcement extinction effect: a partially reinforced response extinguishes more slowly than a continuously reinforced response. It suggests instead that extinction is discrimination. Four pigeons were exposed to daily sessions in which a variable period of food delivery, produced by pecking on a variable-interval schedule, was followed by extinction. The rate of food delivery was varied over a wide range across conditions. Varying the amount of food per delivery inversely with rate of delivery kept response rate from varying excessively. The results confirmed and extended the partial-reinforcement effect; persistence of pecking and time to extinction were inversely related to rate of obtaining food. The results support the molar view of extinction, not as loss of strength of a particular discrete response, but as a transition from one allocation of time among activities to another. Although molecular theories dismiss discrimination due to repeated training and extinction as an impurity or complication, repeated cycles of availability and privation are probably typical of the environment in which most vertebrate species evolved.  相似文献

This experiment investigated the effects of nonpharmacological disruption on temporal discrimination. Pigeons responded on a multiple schedule composed of fixed interval, color-matching, and temporal-discrimination components. The effects of three different disruptors (prefeeding, intercomponent-interval food, and extinction) were assessed. All disruptors decreased response rates during the fixed interval. Prefeeding and intercomponent-interval food had unsystematic effects on response patterning during the fixed interval, whereas extinction increased the relative response rate in the initial portions of the fixed interval. Accuracy of color matching was decreased by prefeeding and was not systematically affected by intercomponent-interval food and extinction. In the temporal-discrimination component, all disruptors flattened the psychophysical functions relating proportion long responses to sample duration. This result indicates a general disruption of temporal discrimination. In addition, parameter estimates derived from the behavioral theory of timing indicated all disruptors decreased pacemaker rate, a result consistent with the predictions of the theory. These results highlight the similarities between disruption of temporal discrimination by pharmacological and nonpharmacological manipulations.  相似文献

Globally, long‐term research is critical to monitor the responses of tropical species to climate and land cover change at the range scale. Citizen science surveys can reveal the long‐term persistence of poorly known nomadic tropical birds occupying fragmented forest patches. We applied dynamic occupancy models to 13 years (2002–2014) of citizen science‐driven presence/absence data on Cape parrot (Poicephalus robustus), a food nomadic bird endemic to South Africa. We modeled its underlying range dynamics as a function of resource distribution, and change in climate and land cover through the estimation of colonization and extinction patterns. The range occupancy of Cape parrot changed little over time (ψ = 0.75–0.83) because extinction was balanced by recolonization. Yet, there was considerable regional variability in occupancy and detection probability increased over the years. Colonizations increased with warmer temperature and area of orchards, thus explaining their range shifts southeastwards in recent years. Although colonizations were higher in the presence of nests and yellowwood trees (Afrocarpus and Podocarpus spp.), the extinctions in small forest patches (≤227 ha) and during low precipitation (≤41 mm) are attributed to resource constraints and unsuitable climatic conditions. Loss of indigenous forest cover and artificial lake/water bodies increased extinction probabilities of Cape parrot. The land use matrix (fruit farms, gardens, and cultivations) surrounding forest patches provides alternative food sources, thereby facilitating spatiotemporal colonization and extinction in the human‐modified matrix. Our models show that Cape parrots are vulnerable to extreme climatic conditions such as drought which is predicted to increase under climate change. Therefore, management of optimum sized high‐quality forest patches is essential for long‐term survival of Cape parrot populations. Our novel application of dynamic occupancy models to long‐term citizen science monitoring data unfolds the complex relationships between the environmental dynamics and range fluctuations of this food nomadic species.  相似文献
