Fronds of clonal seaweeds with extensive holdfasts relative to frond size are known not to self‐thin during growth, even in crowded stands. We tested whether frond self‐thinning would occur for such a seaweed since these traits are more similar to those of unitary seaweeds, which do self‐thin in crowded conditions. We used Sargassum lapazeanum Setch. et N. L. Gardner (Fucales, Phaeophyceae) from the Pacific coast of Mexico, for which we first confirmed its clonal nature by performing a regeneration experiment in culture tanks. During the growth season (winter to late spring), S. lapazeanum stand biomass increased, while frond density and size inequality (Gini coefficient for frond biomass) decreased. These results indicate that self‐thinning occurred at the frond level. We propose a conceptual model for frond dynamics for clonal seaweeds in general. In stands of clonal species with small fronds and relatively extensive holdfasts (particularly when holdfasts are perennial), frond dynamics would be determined mostly by intraclonal regulation, which seems to prevent excessive crowding from occurring. Such species display a positive biomass–density relationship during the growth season. On the contrary, in stands of clonal species with large fronds relative to holdfast size, frond dynamics would be determined mostly by interactions among genets. For such species, self‐thinning may be detected at the frond level in crowded stands, resulting in a negative biomass–density relationship during growth.  相似文献

Fronds from crowded stands of clonal seaweeds, particularly those in which holdfasts are mostly perennial and are the major source of new fronds every year, are thought not to undergo self-thinning during the growth season, unlike those from crowded stands of unitary seaweeds. For clonal seaweeds, it is not known, however, what happens at the very end of the growth season, when crowding is highest for the year. By sampling twice more frequently than previously done for similar species, the possible occurrence of frond self-thinning was tested for Mastocarpus papillatus (Rhodophyta, Gigartinales, Petrocelidaceae) from western Canada during the growth season (spring) of 2003. Initially, stand biomass increased together with frond density, as found previously for similar clonal seaweeds. Shortly before stand biomass peaked for the year (June), frond density remained statistically unchanged. Thus, the increased sampling precision of this study confirms that fronds of these clonal seaweeds do not undergo self-thinning, not even shortly before crowding is highest. Frond size inequality for M. papillatus remained statistically similar during the growth season, which is also consistent with a model of no self-thinning. There are similarities in biomass–density dynamics and in size inequality dynamics between clonal seaweeds and clonal vascular plants.  相似文献

The negative relationship between stand biomass and plant density observed in terrestrial plants was tested among fronds of a clonal red alga, Mazzaella cornucopiae. Stand biomass and frond density were estimated bimonthly for 1 year on 7 permanent quadrats. A positive linear correlation was found between biomass and density for the whole data set, suggesting the lack of self-thinning among fronds of this intertidal alga at natural densities. Higher frond densities could favor increased water retention among fronds, thus minimizing desiccation during low tides. In this way, stands could maintain higher production of biomass. Fronds may also be cushioned better against wave action at higher frond densities, thus decreasing the detachment of larger fronds. The temporal variation of the relationship between biomass and density was plotted separately for these 7 quadrats. Four quadrats showed positive linear correlation between both variables (the other three quadrats showed non-significant positive linear correlation). Their four slopes are statistically similar to that found for the entire data set. It is possible, then, that there is only one positive slope for the biomass-density relationship in this population. If this is true, standing biomass could be estimated from the density of fronds.  相似文献

The intertidal seaweeds Corallina vancouveriensis Yendo and Gelidium coulteri Harv. respond to the experimental removal of associated mats of the clonal anemone Anthopleura elegantissima Brandt with morphological changes that affect their photosynthetic performances. With the removal of anemones, these seaweeds develop a tight compaction of thalli which aids in the retention of moisture during aerial exposure. The morphological response, however, results in greatly reduced net photosynthesis in C. vancouveriensis (–98%) and G. coulteri (–73%) on an areal basis. Association with the clonal anemones allows these seaweeds to maintain a morphology that is more highly productive yet inconsistent with the exposure stresses in many microhabitats at similar tidal levels.  相似文献

The PCR primer GanET has previously been shown to be suitable for the specific amplification of DNA from Ganoderma boninense. A DNA extraction and PCR method has been developed that allows for the amplification of the G. boninense DNA from environmental samples of oil palm tissue. The GanET primer reaction was used in conjunction with a palm-sampling programme to investigate the possible infection of young palms through cut frond base surfaces. Ganoderma DNA was detected in frond base material at a greater frequency than would be expected by comparison with current infection levels. Comparisons are made between the height of the frond base infected, the number of frond bases infected, and subsequent development of basal stem rot. The preliminary results suggest that the development of basal stem rot may be more likely to occur when young lower frond bases are infected.  相似文献

Herbivory on marine macroalgae (seaweeds) in temperate areas is often dominated by relatively small gastropods and crustaceans (mesoherbivores). The effects of these herbivores on the performance of adult seaweeds have so far been almost exclusively investigated under artificial laboratory conditions. Furthermore, several recent laboratory studies with mesoherbivores indicate that inducible chemical resistance may be as common in seaweeds as in vascular plants. However, in order to further explore and test the possible ecological significance of induced chemical resistance in temperate seaweeds, data are needed that address this issue in natural populations. We investigated the effect of grazing by littorinid herbivorous snails (Littorina spp.) on the individual net growth of the brown seaweed Ascophyllum nodosum in natural field populations. Furthermore, the capacity for induced resistance in the seaweeds was assessed by removing herbivores and assaying for relaxation of defences. We found that ambient densities of gastropod herbivores significantly reduced net growth by 45% in natural field populations of A. nodosum. Seaweeds previously exposed to grazing in the field were less consumed by gastropod herbivores in feeding bioassays. Furthermore, the concentration of phlorotannins (polyphenolics), which have been shown to deter gastropod herbivores, was higher in the seaweeds that were exposed to gastropod herbivores in the field. This field study corroborates earlier laboratory experiments and demonstrates that it is important to make sure that the lack of experimental field data on marine mesoherbivory does not lead to rash conclusions about the lack of significant effects of these herbivores on seaweed performance. The results strongly suggest that gastropods exert a significant selection pressure on the evolution of defensive traits in the seaweeds, and that brown seaweeds can respond to attacks by natural densities of these herbivores through increased chemical resistance to further grazing.  相似文献

Advances have been made in cell and tissue culture of seaweeds to define a unique branch of in vitro techniques; however, they are lagging far behind those of land plants and have limited applications. Explants can be cultivated axenically in enriched or artificial seawater culture media, and regeneration and even callus formation are achieved. In this state of the art technique, seaweed tissue culture may be already useful for certain biotechnological applications, such as clonal propagation of seed material for mariculture. Nevertheless, the absolute control of growth and development as it is exerted in higher plant tissue culture is lacking, and it is required for more complex biotechnological applications in seaweeds. Definitively, we need appropriate cells (competent cells) to induce growth with the most effective chemical regulators in culture medium adjusted towards the addition of carbon sources. Still, free cells and protoplast isolation and regeneration in marine seaweeds constitute the most developed topic in seaweed tissue culture. The regulation of growth and development of seaweed free cell and protoplast cultures may sustain a purposeful use of techniques in the era of genomic applications.  相似文献

This work brings together the scattered information on marine plant harvests and the colloid extraction industry in Portugal, as an initial contribution to the improvement of resource management. The first phase of exploitation of marine plant resources started prior to the 14th century, with the gathering and sale of storm-tossed seaweeds for fertilizer. The harvest of seagrasses and algae at Ria de Aveiro was of great economic importance. The second phase of resource exploitation began with the wider scale harvest of agarophyte species for colloid extraction. Portugal is at present the third largest harvester of the agarophytes Gelidium and Pterocladia (2500 t annually), and it is the fifth largest agar producer (350 t annually). Other colloid-producing species, including Chondrus crispus and Mastocarpus stellatus, are also harvested for export. The total agarophyte landings, agar production and income from agar exports is far below the maximum levels attained in the early 1970s. The status of stocks in each different harvest zone on the continental coast and the Azores is examined. Although there is an effective management structure for the Portuguese marine plant resource, research is needed to provide a sound biological basis for management. author for correspondence  相似文献

Herbivory in terrestrial and marine systems can induce changes in plant chemistry affecting the foraging behaviour of herbivores. A model based on terrestrial plant-herbivore interactions predicts herbivory-induced changes in leaf chemistry to be manifested in (1) increased herbivore mobility, (2) increased feeding dispersal and (3) reduced tissue consumption by herbivores. This study is the first to demonstrate that herbivory-induced changes in the tissue chemistry of the brown seaweed Ascophyllum nodosum elicit the same response in the feeding behaviour of the gastropod Littorina obtusata as predicted for herbivorous insects, providing good evidence for the models validity across different ecosystems. The potential benefit of increased feeding dispersal to terrestrial plants as suggested by the model is the prevention of concentrated damage to apical tissues thereby preserving the plants ability to compete for light; A. nodosum does not conform to these predictions. Increased dispersal of feeding damage on A. nodosum away from primary frond tissues would reduce the likelihood of frond breakage implying a fitness benefit of induced resistance.  相似文献

This study reports some epidemiological aspects of the infections of Mazzaella laminarioides by Endophyton sp. and Pleurocapsa sp., the organisms associated with the green patch and deformative diseases respectively.Infections affected an important segment of the host population and persisted throughout the year. The main infecting organism was Endophyton sp. Frequency, density and intensity index showed seasonal variations, with lower values in winter. It is suggested that tissue weakening and changes in the biomechanical properties of the infected individuals could be the responsible for this seasonal pattern of variation.This study demonstrates that, at the host population level, the two life history stages of M. laminarioides are susceptible to the pathogens. We also detected an association between reproduction of the host and infection, although the basis for it are unknown.The two pathogens showed different intra-frond distribution, with Endophyton sp. affecting preferentially the base of the frond. The spatial distribution within the beach was different for each pathogen. The main impact of Pleurocapsa sp. was recorded at the center, more protected sector of the beach.  相似文献

Summary Larvae of the pyralid moth, Herpetogramma aeglealis, construct feeding shelters upon the Christmas fern (Polystichum acrostichoides). Field and laboratory study involving 532 shelters showed that as the larvae mature, they sequentially inhabit approximately 5 shelters of 3 distinct types, constructed at night on different fronds of the same plant. The bundle shelter, simple and ephemeral, is first to be inhabited and constructed. The fiddlehead shelter which houses slightly older larvae strongly resembles contemporaneously emerging frond fiddleheads. The final shelter form, the globe, is a silk-bound ball of leaflets at the frond tip. An individual larva usually constructs 3 globe shelters on different fronds of the same plant before completing its development. As shelter sites, sterile Polystichum fronds are chosen preferentially over fertile fronds. The bundle and fiddlehead shelter forms, less abundant, appear cryptic to humans and perhaps to other vertebrates. The final globe shelter form is larger and quite conspicuous. However, the persistence of empty globe shelters left on the plant as the larva moves to a new one may serve to make searching for larvae less profitable for potential predators and parasites. We suggest that the energetic costs of constructing and occupying multiple shelters may be offset by circumvention of reduced frond palatability and reduced exposure to predators and parasites.  相似文献

In clonal plants, a clonal fragment is a basic unit. There may exist clonal integration that is often regarded adaptive. By definition, a larger clonal fragment comprises more interconnected ramets and/or occupies a larger area of the habitat. When the habitat is so heterogeneous in terms of essential resources that the resources the whole clonal fragment needs can be captured only in a limited number of microhabitats, a large clonal fragment may require extensive and/or intensive clonal integration. Therefore, we hypothesize that in an environment where the resources are distributed in a highly heterogeneous way, a species forming large clonal fragments possesses more extensive and/or intensive clonal integration gaining essential resources than that forming small ones.This hypothesis was tested in a field experiment with two rhizomatous species growing in inland-dune habitats with high heterogeneity of water resource, one (Psammochloa villosa) forming large clonal fragments and the other (Hedysarum laeve) forming small ones. In P. villosa, tracer-(water-soluble acid fuchsin)-labeled water could be transported along the rhizome at a velocity of about 0.93 m per hour and 4 ramets per hour, which was much faster than that in H. laeve. Similarly, the acid fuchsin-labeled water was transported to a longer length in the rhizomes (3.96 m vs. 1.12 m) and to more ramets (14 vs. 3) in P. villosa than in H. laeve. In P. villosa, the acid fuchsin-labeled water reached the ends of the rhizomes and all ramets along the rhizomes were dyed purple. In H. laeve, however, the acid fuchsin-labeled water could not reach the rhizome tips and along the rhizomes only some ramets were labeled. The results suggest that P. villosa is an extensive and intensive integrator, whereas H. laeve is a restrictive and less intensive integrator, supporting the hypothesis. The possible mechanisms and the ecological implications of the findings were discussed.  相似文献

Two abscission zones are present in fronds of Spirodela oligorhiza. In one zone the abscission layer separates the daughter frond and its connecting stalk from the mother frond. The second abscission layer separates the daughter frond from the connecting stalk. An axillary frond is asymmetrically positioned at the base of each daughter frond where it joins the mother frond. In right-handed physiological clones the axillary frond is to the right of the connecting stalk and in left-handed clones, to the left of the stalk. When a daughter frond abscises it leaves behind its axillary frond in the pocket of the mother frond. Histological features of abscission and treatments that induce abscission in Spirodela oligorhiza are described.  相似文献

The importance that frond crowding represents for the survival of fronds of the clonal intertidal alga Mazzaella cornucopiae (Postels et Ruprecht) Hommersand (Rhodophyta, Gigartinaceae) was investigated in Barkley Sound, British Columbia, Canada. Frond density is high for this species, up to 20 fronds·cm?2 in the most crowded stands. Frond crowding imposes a cost in the form of reduced net photosynthetic rates when fronds are fully hydrated as a result of reduced irradiance compared with experimental (not found naturally) low-density stands. However, the interaction between desiccation and irradiance alters this relationship between net photosynthetic rates and frond density. During a typical daytime low tide in spring, irradiance is 10–30 μmol·m?2·s?1 below the canopy of fronds, and frond desiccation (relative to total water content) can reach 43% at the end of the low tide. In contrast to natural stands, fronds from experimentally thinned stands are subjected to irradiances up to 2000 μmol·m?2·s?1 because of the spatial separation among fronds and can desiccate up to 81% at the end of the same low tide. Laboratory experiments showed that negative net photosynthetic rates occur between 40% and 80% desiccation at an irradiance of 515 μmol·m?2·s?1, and the literature suggests that strong bleaching could occur as a result. At 20 μmol·m?2·s?1 of irradiance and desiccation levels up to 40%, simulating understory conditions of natural stands, net photosynthetic rates are never negative. Experimental thinning of stands of M. cornucopiae done during spring effectively resulted in a stronger extent of frond bleaching compared with natural stands. Therefore, the cost of reduced net photosynthetic rates at high frond densities when fronds are fully hydrated is counterbalanced by the protective effects of frond crowding against extensive bleaching, essential for survival at the intertidal zone. Future research will have to demonstrate the possible relationship between the frequency and duration of negative net photosynthetic rates and the extent of frond bleaching.  相似文献

Duckweed(Lemna gibba) is a useful model system for elucidating plant development, but the techniques needed for regenerating fronds from calli are not yet well established. This study examined the effects of auxin, sucrose, and gelling agents on callus and frond formation inL. gibba G3. After three weeks of culturing on a solid medium, two types of calli were observed: watery, pale-green, and undifferentiated; or white, compact calli that were organized into nodules and which resembled somatic embryogenie calli. Homogeneous callus lines were produced through selective subculture. To induce nodular calli, auxin (2,4-D) was absolutely required, with an effective concentration of 5 to 20 μM; induction was found to be possible with up to a maximum concentration of 4.4%. The calli were then maintained on a medium with a reduced 2,4-D concentration (1 μM), and were transferred every three weeks. Optimal callus induction and growth were obtained by using 3% sucrose with a combination of 0.15% Gelrite and 0.4% agar. Fronds, however, could be regenerated only on distilled water solidified with a combination of 0.4% agar and 0.15% Gelrite. On this medium, 87% of the callus expiants regenerated into fronds after four weeks of culture. These new fronds were morphologically normal but small, approximately 15 to 20% of the size of stock fronds. Continued culture of these fronds in an SH medium produced normal duckweeds, and histological examination of the cultures revealed several distinct types of callus nodules. Nonetheless, because zygotic embryogenesis inL. gibba does not produce distinct bipolar structures, the developmental pathway of frond regeneration from these nodular cultures remains unknown.  相似文献

利用SSR分子标记技术分析了佛坪国家级自然保护区秦岭箭竹(Fargesia qinlingensis)的克隆多样性和克隆结构,以探讨小尺度范围内秦岭箭竹自然居群遗传变异的分布特征,对该种开花特性、高山地区生态环境维护和大熊猫的保护提供重要依据。结果表明7对SSR引物共扩增出79个位点,其中多态性位点77个,多态位点百分率(PPB)为97.47%。秦岭箭竹的142个分株共形成107个克隆,最大克隆可达5 m。克隆多样性略高于其他克隆植物的平均值(D=0.62,G/N=0.17,E=0.68),基因型比率(G/N)、Simpson指数(D)、平均克隆大小(N/G)和Fager均匀性指数(E)分别为0.7535、0.9680、1.3271和0.5109。克隆空间结构分析表明秦岭箭竹的克隆构型为密集型,各克隆呈镶嵌性分布,同一克隆的分株排列紧密。克隆聚类分析表明各克隆之间聚类不明显,总体上来自同一样地的克隆被聚为一类。空间自相关分析显示在空间距离为36 m范围内,分株比基株有更显著的空间遗传结构,空间自相关系数r的取值范围分别为0.084—0.626和0.024—0.288,说明克隆繁殖在一定程度上限制了空间遗传结构的范围。样地内秦岭箭竹个体在空间距离小于44 m时存在显著的正相关空间结构,特别是在4 m处表现出最大的空间自相关系数(r=0.626),表明空间距离相距4 m内的个体最有可能属于同一克隆,4 m比5 m更能表现出清晰的克隆结构,X-轴截距为52.280,代表了秦岭箭竹不规则克隆的平均最小长度。秦岭箭竹的克隆多样性和克隆结构与初始苗补充、花粉散播方式和微环境差异有关。  相似文献

We attempted to isolate microsatellites from a Symbiodinium-free gorgonian octocoral, Junceella juncea, using two methods, partial genomic library screening and enrichment. Among the 3856 clones screened by the partial library method, 10 possibly positive signals were found, and 3 of them could be used to design primers and amplified consistently. In contrast, only one locus isolated by the enrichment method gave reliable amplification and was useful. The results indicate that microsatellites are rare in Junceella juncea, as reported for other cnidarians. Overall, we obtained 4 polymorphic loci to test the feasibility in investigating clonal structure of J. juncea. A total of 40 multilocus genotypes were found among 152 colonies, and the number of genotypes (clones) identified at 7 reefs ranged from 2 to 16. The results of a nonmetric multidimensional scaling analysis indicated the recruitment of J. juncea populations mainly comes from self-retention. These novel microsatellite loci will provide a useful tool to study clonal structure and population genetics for J. juncea in the future.  相似文献

We investigated a possible relationship between the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the stimulation of frond division of the aquatic plant Spirodela polyrrhiza (duckweed) during a 7-day experimental culture period. In particular, we monitored superoxide concentration using a state-of-the-art cell biosensor. A considerable reduction in ROS and superoxide concentration was observed during the first 2 days of culture, whereas duckweed cultures achieved near exponential growth rates after the second day. In addition, apoptotic markers such as the cytoplasmic concentration of cytochrome c, mitochondrial membrane depolarization and the activity of caspase-3 declined during the culture period and at least before daughter frond maturation. We suggest that S. polyrrhiza frond division may have been stimulated by the observed reduction of free radicals and the associated avoidance of cell apoptotic pathways in cultured plants.  相似文献

The term seaweed industry is employed in a broad sense and includes production both of commercial seaweeds such as Laminaria and Porphyra by phycoculture and of processed seaweed products, such as algin, agar and carrageenan.Before the founding of the People's Republic, China had a very insignificant seaweed industry, producing small quantities of the purple laver Porphyra and the glueweed Gloiopeltis by the primitive rock-cleaning method and the kelps Laminaria and Undaria by the primitive stone-throwing method, both aiming at enhancing the growth of the wild seaweeds. Also, a small quantity of agar was manufactured by the traditional Japanese method of gelling, freezing, thawing and drying the product. The small production was not sufficient to meet the demand of the Chinese people who for ages have appreciated seaweeds and their products for food. Therefore, large quantities of seaweeds and seaweed products had to be imported from various countries, for instance, Eucheuma and Gracilaria from Indonesia and other southeastern Asian countries, Laminaria and agar from Japan, even Porphyra from the USA. Annual Laminaria import from Japan generally amounted to over 10 000 tons and in some years approached 20 000–30 000 tons. Some quantities of the glueweed Gloiopeltis and the vermifuge weed Digenea simplex were exported, mainly to Japan.Since the founding of the People's Republic of China in October, 1949, China has exerted efforts to build up a self-supporting seaweed industry. Now after a lapse of 30-some years, a sizable seaweed industry has been developed. China is now able to produce by phycoculture more than one million tons of fresh seaweeds, including Laminaria, Undaria, Porphyra, Eucheuma, Gracilaria etc. and several thousand tons of seaweed extracts, including algin, agar, carrageenan, mannitol and iodine. At present, China still imports some quantities of seaweeds and seaweed products from various countries but is able to produce sufficient quantities to meet the people's need and even to export some quantities of the seaweeds Laminaria, Undaria and Porphyra and the seaweed products algin and mannitol.At the Tenth International Seaweed Symposium, I presented a paper on the Marine Phycoculture of China, in which I emphasized on the methods of cultivation (Tseng 1981b). Therefore I would like to take this opportunity to supplement the last lecture by presenting a paper on the role of phycological research in the development of China's seaweed industry.  相似文献

Of the 1500 km coast of Namibia, only 80 km is predominantly rocky, the remaining 1420 km being sandy with only minor rocky outcrops. At present two species are utilized, Gracilaria verrucosa for agar and Laminaria schinzii for human consumption. Other potentially utilizable seaweeds occurring on the coast are Ecklonia maxima for alginates, Suhria vittata for agar, Gigartina radula, G. stiriata and Aeodes orbitosa for carrageenans and Porphyra capensis for human consumption. Laminaria schinzii also can be used for alginate production. Due to the diamond-mining areas around the 80 km rocky area at Luderitz (26° 39 S), only 20 km are accessible; hence, at present the seaweeds are being exploited almost to their full potential. The species currently not being utilized could be used, however, to support the industry that already exists at Luderitz. To increase production, access to the diamond areas would have to be gained or a cultivation program initiated.  相似文献
