Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded in a visuo-spatial attention task where the position of an imperative stimulus was indicated either validly or invalidly by a central arrow (trial-by-trial cueing). Subjects had to perform choice RT tasks with the response being dependent either on the identity of the target stimulus or on its position. When target identity was relevant for response selection, validly cued stimuli elicited amplitude enhancements of the early, sensory-evoked P1 and N1 components at lateral posterior sites. The N1 validity effect was limited to scalp sites ipsilateral to the visual field of stimulus presentation. Although these effects were found only when the sensory discrimination task was considerably difficult, they are in line with models assuming that modulations of sensory-perceptual processing (“sensory gating”) are induced by spatial cueing. However, when target location was response-relevant, N1 amplitude enhancements were consistently elicited by invalidly cued letters.CNV and LRP measures indicated that the arrow elicited response-related processing in the cue-target interval. Such processes occurred even when the cue contained no information about an upcoming response. Two consecutive lateralization phases were distinguishable in the LRP, with experimentally induced response assignments becoming effective only during the second phase.  相似文献

Orientation strategy implicit in spatial attention]   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this experiment, two rows of four boxes, one above and the other below the fixation point, were displayed on a computer monitor. A cognitive numeric cue indicated one of the four external boxes, where the attention was to be directed. Stimuli, however, could occur in any of the eight boxes. The subject was instructed to respond to the imperative stimulus as fast as possible, regardless of its location. Four time intervals between cue and stimulus presentation (SOAs) were employed in order to disclose the route along which attention is moved. With the shortest SOA (100 msec) an indication that attention movements follow the cartesian/orthogonal axes was shown.  相似文献

We investigated the ability of rats to recall sequences of nose-poke holes with a modified serial reaction time task. In each trial, a sequence was randomly selected and the position of the first illuminated hole, which functioned as a cue stimulus, informed the rats whether the following sequence was a predictable one or not, based on prior training. The rats responded predictively only when the cues of the predictable sequences were presented. They did not show predictive responses when the cues of unpredictable sequences were presented, even though the unpredictable sequences partially had the same order of holes as the predictable sequences. These results indicate that the rats can recall sequences on the basis of presentation of the first cue stimulus informing predictable or unpredictable sequences. Recording neuronal activity while rats perform this behavioral task would be useful to elucidate neuronal mechanisms that mediate sequence recall.  相似文献

To obtain a coherent perception of the world, our senses need to be in alignment. When we encounter misaligned cues from two sensory modalities, the brain must infer which cue is faulty and recalibrate the corresponding sense. We examined whether and how the brain uses cue reliability to identify the miscalibrated sense by measuring the audiovisual ventriloquism aftereffect for stimuli of varying visual reliability. To adjust for modality-specific biases, visual stimulus locations were chosen based on perceived alignment with auditory stimulus locations for each participant. During an audiovisual recalibration phase, participants were presented with bimodal stimuli with a fixed perceptual spatial discrepancy; they localized one modality, cued after stimulus presentation. Unimodal auditory and visual localization was measured before and after the audiovisual recalibration phase. We compared participants’ behavior to the predictions of three models of recalibration: (a) Reliability-based: each modality is recalibrated based on its relative reliability—less reliable cues are recalibrated more; (b) Fixed-ratio: the degree of recalibration for each modality is fixed; (c) Causal-inference: recalibration is directly determined by the discrepancy between a cue and its estimate, which in turn depends on the reliability of both cues, and inference about how likely the two cues derive from a common source. Vision was hardly recalibrated by audition. Auditory recalibration by vision changed idiosyncratically as visual reliability decreased: the extent of auditory recalibration either decreased monotonically, peaked at medium visual reliability, or increased monotonically. The latter two patterns cannot be explained by either the reliability-based or fixed-ratio models. Only the causal-inference model of recalibration captures the idiosyncratic influences of cue reliability on recalibration. We conclude that cue reliability, causal inference, and modality-specific biases guide cross-modal recalibration indirectly by determining the perception of audiovisual stimuli.  相似文献

Experiments investigated a Pavlovian conditioning situation where the presence and absence of the stimulus are reversed temporally with respect to the presentation of a reward. Instead of a conditioned stimulus (e.g. odor) signaling the presence of a reward, the stimulus (e.g. odor) is present in the environment except just prior to the presence of the reward. Thus, the absence of the stimulus, or offset of the stimulus (e.g. absence of odor), serves as a conditioned stimulus and is the reward cue. Honey bees (Apis mellifera) were used as a model invertebrate system, and the proboscis‐conditioning paradigm was used as the test procedure. Using both simple Pavlovian conditioning and discrimination‐learning protocols, animals learned to associate the onset of an odor as conditioned stimuli when paired with a sucrose reward. They could also learn to associate the onset of a puff of air with a sucrose reward. However, bees could not associate the offset of an order stimulus with the presentation of a sucrose reward in either a simple conditioning or a discrimination‐learning situation. These results support the model that a very different cognitive architecture is used by invertebrates to deal with certain environmental situations, including signaled avoidance.  相似文献

We studied the effects of cue competition on timing in both overshadowing and blocking operant procedures with pigeons. A white center key delivered reward when pecked 30 s after a red or green sidekey was presented and 10 s after presentation of the alternate color on the other sidekey. In Experiment 1, key presentations were concurrent during training trials for overshadow-condition pigeons, while side key presentations were separated across training trials for control birds. In Experiment 2, half of the birds (Blocking group) were given pre-exposure trials to either the 10-s or 30-s sidekey condition. Both blocking-condition and control birds were then given trials of concurrent side key presentations. Peak time curves were compared between experimental and control conditions. The results showed blocking of timing accuracy of a long (30-s) stimulus by a short (10-s) stimulus, but no evidence for overshadowing of timing accuracy.  相似文献

In the present experiments two different attention modalities were investigated: focused and distributed attention. In Experiment 1 manual choice reaction times to lateralized visual stimuli were measured. Visual stimuli (rectangles or squares) were presented in one of six positions along the horizontal axis. In between each position a digit 1 to 5 was permanently displayed. The subjects were instructed to switch their attention to one of the five digits and to respond as fast as possible to the stimulus target flashed either on the right or on the left of the focus of attention. The only difference in Experiment 2 was that the digit stayed on 100 msec only. The results show the importance of a visual cue (Exp. 1) for focused attention. In the absence of a permanent visual cue (Exp. 2) only distributed attention can be employed.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate how information carried by a cue stimulus modulate event-related potentials (ERPs) to a subsequent target stimulus which either calls for an overt response (Go stimulus) or no response (Nogo stimulus). One of the cues predicted the likely appearance of the Go stimulus (Go cue) whereas the other cue predicted the likely appearance of the Nogo stimulus (Nogo cue). Our results showed that unpredicted Nogo stimuli elicited enlarged N200 component. This finding supports the notion that Nogo N200 reflects response inhibition processes, i.e., the amplitude of the N200 is a function of the difficulty of response inhibition. In other words, increased N200 to Nogo stimuli following Go cues might be related to increased efforts in activating the response inhibition system thereby interrupting preparations to respond.  相似文献

We examined the local field potential of the hippocampus to monitor brain states during a conditional discrimination task, in order to elucidate the relationship between ongoing brain states and a conditioned motor reflex. Five 10-week-old Wistar/ST male rats underwent a serial feature positive conditional discrimination task in eyeblink conditioning using a preceding light stimulus as a conditional cue for reinforced trials. In this task, a 2-s light stimulus signaled that the following 350-ms tone (conditioned stimulus) was reinforced with a co-terminating 100-ms periorbital electrical shock. The interval between the end of conditional cue and the onset of the conditioned stimulus was 4±1 s. The conditioned stimulus was not reinforced when the light was not presented. Animals successfully utilized the light stimulus as a conditional cue to drive differential responses to the identical conditioned stimulus. We found that presentation of the conditional cue elicited hippocampal theta oscillations, which persisted during the interval of conditional cue and the conditioned stimulus. Moreover, expression of the conditioned response to the tone (conditioned stimulus) was correlated with the appearance of theta oscillations immediately before the conditioned stimulus. These data support hippocampal involvement in the network underlying a conditional discrimination task in eyeblink conditioning. They also suggest that the preceding hippocampal activity can determine information processing of the tone stimulus in the cerebellum and its associated circuits.  相似文献

Male and female chicks were trained to discriminate between two boxes for food reinforcement. The correct box was indicated by a colour cue (red or brown) and a position cue (right or left). After learning, the colour and the position cues were dissociated: the right-left location of the two boxes was alternated between trials according to a semi-random sequence. The chicks were thus retrained to discriminate either on the basis of colour (irrespective of position) or on the basis of position (irrespective of colour). There were no sex differences, during training, with both position and colour cues. However, during re-training females performed better on the colour learning task and males performed better on the position learning task.  相似文献

Context-dependent memory: colour versus odour   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1

An olfactory stimulus and a visual stimulus were employed in a context- dependent memory study using a prose passage as the to-be-remembered item. Ninety-five university students (aged 17-35 years) learned the passage of prose in the presence of one of the stimuli and were then asked to recall the passage with the original context either reinstated or not reinstated. The results revealed a significant context-dependent memory effect for the olfactory cue but not for the visual cue. They demonstrate support for the effectiveness of odours as context cues and it is suggested that context-dependent memory processes may underlie the formation and retrieval of odour-evoked autobiographical memories.   相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine whether the progressive disappearance of short-latency conditioned responses, or inhibition of delay, observed in Pavlovian conditioning with long inter-stimulus intervals, could be reverted by the presentation of a novel stimulus. In one experiment, two groups of rabbits received extensive training with a short (250 ms) or a long (1500 ms) tone that overlapped and terminated with a periorbital shock unconditioned stimulus. After training, the presentation of an extraneous stimulus prior to tone onset produced a reinstatement of short latency CRs in the group trained with the long CS, but did not affect CR latency in the group trained with the short CS. This finding is consistent with Pavlov's (1927) view that conditioning with long conditioned stimuli involves the acquisition of response tendencies in the early portion of the stimulus that are subsequently suppressed by the development of an inhibitory process.  相似文献

Gaze following is a socio-cognitive process that provides adaptive information about potential threats and opportunities in the individual’s environment. The aim of the present study was to investigate the potential interaction between emotional context and facial dominance in gaze following. We used the gaze cue task to induce attention to or away from the location of a target stimulus. In the experiment, the gaze cue either belonged to a (dominant looking) male face or a (non-dominant looking) female face. Critically, prior to the task, individuals were primed with pictures of threat or no threat to induce either a dangerous or safe environment. Findings revealed that the primed emotional context critically influenced the gaze cuing effect. While a gaze cue of the dominant male face influenced performance in both the threat and no-threat conditions, the gaze cue of the non-dominant female face only influenced performance in the no-threat condition. This research suggests an implicit, context-dependent follower bias, which carries implications for research on visual attention, social cognition, and leadership.  相似文献

Fishes in the superorder ostariophysi possess specialized epidermal cells that contain an alarm cue. Fish associate novel odours, such as the odour of a predator, with predation risk after a single, simultaneous exposure to the novel odour and alarm cue. Thereafter, the novel cue is recognized as an indicator of risk and its presence induces antipredator behaviour. Two common antipredator behaviours are reduction in activity and movement to the bottom. This phenomenon has been demonstrated many times in the laboratory setting for a variety of aquatic taxa. In nature however, the detection of novel predator odour may be time-shifted with respect to the detection of alarm cues. Is there a critical period immediately upon the detection of alarm cue in which associative learning can occur? We presented zebra danios, Danio rerio, with the odour of northern pike, Esox lucius, 5?min after presenting them with either alarm cue or water (control). During a predation event, 5?min is a long time. When later retested with pike odour alone, zebra fish conditioned with alarm cue significantly increased antipredator behaviour in terms of decreased activity and movement towards the bottom. Control fish did not recognize pike odour as dangerous when retested. These data show that learned recognition of predation risk is sufficiently robust to accommodate ecologically realistic temporal shifts in stimulus presentation.  相似文献

How the brain constructs a coherent representation of the environment from noisy visual input remains poorly understood. Here, we explored whether awareness of the stimulus plays a role in the integration of local features into a representation of global shape. Participants were primed with a shape defined either by position or orientation cues, and performed a shape-discrimination task on a subsequently presented probe shape. Crucially, the probe could either be defined by the same or different cues as the prime, which allowed us to distinguish the effect of priming by local features and global shape. We found a robust priming benefit for visible primes, with response times being faster when the probe and prime were the same shape, regardless of the defining cue. However, rendering the prime invisible uncovered a dissociation: position-defined primes produced behavioural benefit only for probes of the same cue type. Surprisingly, orientation-defined primes afforded an enhancement only for probes of the opposite cue. In further experiments, we showed that the effect of priming was confined to retinotopic coordinates and that there was no priming effect by invisible orientation cues in an orientation-discrimination task. This explains the absence of priming by the same cue in our shape-discrimination task. In summary, our findings show that while in the absence of awareness orientation signals can recruit retinotopic circuits (e.g. intrinsic lateral connections), conscious processing is necessary to interpret local features as global shape.  相似文献

Although it is well known that attention to a visual or auditory stimulus can enhance its perception, less is known concerning the effects of attention on the perception of natural tactile stimuli. The present study was conducted to examine the magnitude of the effect of cross-modal manipulations of attention in human subjects on the detection of weak, low-frequency vibrotactile stimuli delivered to the glabrous skin of the finger pad of the right index finger via an Optacon. Three suprathreshold vibrotactile arrays (40 Hz), varying in the number of activated pegs and hence the area of skin stimulated, were used. Subjects were trained to detect the occurrence of vibrotactile or visual stimuli and to respond by pressing a foot pedal as quickly as possible thereafter. Two instructional lights were used to cue the subjects as to which stimulus modality they should attend, in three experimental conditions. In the first cue condition, the forthcoming stimulus modality was indicated by the illumination of its associated light. In the second cue condition, both instructional lights were illuminated, and the subjects were asked to divide their attention equally between the two modalities. In the third cue condition, the stimulus modality was falsely indicated by the illumination of the cue not associated with the stimulus to be presented. Reaction times (RTs) were calculated for each trial. For each modality, tactile and visual, the RTs varied significantly with the cue condition, with the mean RT changing in a graded manner across the experimental conditions (being shortest for the correctly cued condition, intermediate for the neutrally cued condition, and longest for the incorrectly cued condition.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

This study investigated whether rainbow darters Etheostoma caeruleum can learn to recognize unfamiliar predators through the process of classical conditioning. Etheostoma caeruleum were conditioned by exposing them simultaneously to their chemical alarm cues (a known fright stimulus) and either chemical cues from larval ringed salamanders Ambystoma annulatum (unfamiliar predator) or to a blank water cue (control). Conditioning could result in either specific learning of the A. annulatum cue or increased wariness in response to any novel cue (neophobia). To distinguish between these possibilities, E. caeruleum in both groups were exposed to either A. annulatum cues alone or to chemical cues from western rat snakes Pantherophis obsoletus (novel cue) 2 days after conditioning. Treatment (A. annulatum‐conditioned) E. caeruleum, but not control E. caeruleum, showed a fright response when they were exposed to both the conditioned (A. annulatum) and novel (P. obsoletus) cues, indicating increased sensitivity to new stimuli. When E. caeruleum were retested after an additional 32 days, however, the fright response occurred only following exposure to the conditioned (A. annulatum) stimulus, indicating that specific learning of the A. annulatum cue had been retained whereas the neophobia to novel stimuli was temporary.  相似文献

Sexual performance levels following the presentation of a novel stimulus were examined in male Japanese quail. During a 1-hr observation period males were presented either with a new stimulus female each 20 min, with the same female removed briefly at 20-min intervals or with the same female left undisturbed. Although the latency to grab the neck of the famel was shorter in the group receiving a fresh female after 20 min, the overall number of completed copulations was unaffected by the treatments. It is concluded, therefore, that novelty is not an important factor governing sexual performance levels of male Japanese quail under these test conditions.  相似文献

We examined the short- and long-term habituation of auditory event-related potentials (ERPs) elicited by tones, complex tones and digitized speech sounds (vowels and consonant-vowel-consonant syllables). Twelve different stimuli equated in loudness and duration (300 msec) were studied. To examine short-term habituation stimuli were presented in trains of 6 with interstimulus intervals of 0.5 or 1.0 sec. The first 4 stimuli in a train were identical standards. On 50% of the trains the standard in the 5th position was replaced by a deviant probe stimulus, and on 20% of the trains the standard in the 6th position was replaced by a target, a truncated standard that required a speeded button press response.Short-term habituation (STH) was complete by the third stimulus in the train and resulted in amplitude decrements of 50–75% for the N1 component. STH was partially stimulus specific in that amplitudes were larger following deviant stimuli in the 5th position than following standards. STH of the N1 was more marked for speech sounds than for loudness-matched tones or complex tones at short ISI. In addition, standard and deviant stimuli that differed in phonetic structure showed more cross-habituation than did tones or complex tones that differed in frequency. This pattern of results suggests that STH is a function of the acoustic resemblance of successive stimuli. The long-term habituation (LTH) of the ERP was studied by comparing amplitudes across balanced 5.25 m stimulus blocks over the course of the experiment. Two types of LTH were observed. The N1 showed stimulus-specific LTH in that N1 amplitudes declined during the presentation of a stimulus, but returned to control levels when a different stimulus was presented in the subsequent condition. In contrast, the P3 elicited by the deviant stimuli showed non-specific LTH, being reduced across successive blocks containing different stimuli. P3s elicited by target stimuli remained stable in amplitude.  相似文献

Certain brain areas involved in interval timing are also important in motor activity. This raises the possibility that motor activity might influence interval timing. To test this hypothesis, we assessed interval timing in healthy adults following different types of training. The pre- and post-training tasks consisted of a button press in response to the presentation of a rhythmic visual stimulus. Alterations in temporal expectancy were evaluated by measuring response times. Training consisted of responding to the visual presentation of regularly appearing stimuli by either: (1) pointing with a whole-body movement, (2) pointing only with the arm, (3) imagining pointing with a whole-body movement, (4) simply watching the stimulus presentation, (5) pointing with a whole-body movement in response to a target that appeared at irregular intervals (6) reading a newspaper. Participants performing a motor activity in response to the regular target showed significant improvements in judgment times compared to individuals with no associated motor activity. Individuals who only imagined pointing with a whole-body movement also showed significant improvements. No improvements were observed in the group that trained with a motor response to an irregular stimulus, hence eliminating the explanation that the improved temporal expectations of the other motor training groups was purely due to an improved motor capacity to press the response button. All groups performed a secondary task equally well, hence indicating that our results could not simply be attributed to differences in attention between the groups. Our results show that motor activity, even when it does not play a causal or corrective role, can lead to improved interval timing judgments.  相似文献
