Interethnic marriage represents a major trend in the demographic history of American Indians. While the majority of these unions involved Indian women and Caucasian men, a sizeable number occurred between Indians and African Americans. The children of these bicultural marriages were “mixed bloods” who in turn typically married non-Indians or other mixed bloods. Using data from the 1910 Census on American Indians in the United States and Alaska, this article explores why American Indians with African ancestry enjoyed high fertility. Differential rates of fertility among American Indians in the past were due to a number of underlying genetic, cultural, and environmental factors. By identifying these factors, the paradox of why Indian women with African heritage did so well in terms of fertility largely disappears. African admixture, however, greatly complicates Indian social identity.  相似文献

Landmarks digitized from lateral cephalometric radiographs of 107 Navajo Indians between 10 and 12 years of age were analyzed to determine coefficients of variation or standard deviations for 38 cephalometric measurements. These values were compared with the same measures of variation for identical measurements on North American whites derived from the Michigan and Philadelphia Growth Studies. For the majority of variables, there were no differences between groups. Variation for the genetically and environmentally isolated Navajo Indians was the same as that of the highly diverse Caucasian samples. However, measurements of upper, lower, and total anterior facial height (N-ANS, ANS-Me, and N-Me, respectively) indicate that these features are substantially less variable in Navajo Indians relative to the Michigan and Philadelphia populations.  相似文献

Summary Three human saliva genetic markers, namely, salivary peroxidase (SAPX), Pm, and Ph proteins, were investigated in the three major ethnic groups of Malaysia: Malays, Chinese, and Indians.For Pm, the allelic frequencies of Pm + for Malays, Chinese, and Indians are 0.385±0.030, 0.282±0.026, and 0.289±0.026 respectively. For Ph, the allelic frequencies of Ph + are 0.082±0.016 for Malays, 0.109±0.017 for Chinese, and 0.062±0.013 for Indians. For SAPX, the allelic frequencies of SAPX 1 in Malays, Chinese, and Indians are 0.762±0.027, 0.755±0.027, and 0.723±0.026 respectively.  相似文献

A total of 627 subjects comprising 455 Chinese, 127 Dravidian Indians and 45 Malays were investigated for serum Apo A-IV polymorphism. The frequency of Apo A-IV*2 was found to be significantly higher (p less than 0.001) in Indians (0.043) compared to that in the Chinese (0.010) and Malays (0.011). The frequency of A-IV*3 was found to be around 0.02 in all the ethnic groups. A low frequency of A-IV*4 (less than 0.01) was observed in the Chinese and Indians. The phenotypic distribution of Apo A-IV was at Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium in the three ethnic groups.  相似文献

Historians and anthropologists have credited the invention of trapping beaver with castoreum bait and steel traps to the Indians of southeastern Canada in the 1790s. However, English trappers in Virginia used this technique before 1728, and the Indians of southeastern Canada were using it by 1756. It is suggested that the widespread adoption of castoreum and steel traps by Northeastern Indians in the 1790's was due to the collapse of the world fur market after the French Revolution.  相似文献

A total of 215 subjects comprising 95 Chinese, 66 Malays and 54 Indians were investigated for restriction fragment length polymorphisms of the tissue-type plasminogen activator (PLAT) gene at an EcoRI site using the probe ptPA-4352. The phenotypic distribution showed a good agreement with the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The gene frequencies of PLAT*1 were found to be 0.47 in the Chinese, 0.52 in the Malays and 0.41 in South Indians.  相似文献

Inflammatory bowel disease is generally assumed to be rare among negroes and Indians. Over 10 years 34 cases of ulcerative colitis and 14 cases of Crohn''s disease were seen in one medical and one surgical unit in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad. Twenty-six patients were Negroes, 18 were Indians, three were of mixed race, and one was Caucasian. In many of these patients the disease was extensive and several of those with Crohn''s disease suffered severe complications. The assumption that inflammatory bowel disease is rare among West Indians of African and Indian origin therefore seems to be wrong.  相似文献

Among American Indians and Alaska Natives, most aspects of ethnicity are tightly associated with the person's tribal origins. Language, history, foods, land and traditions differ among the hundreds of tribes indigenous to the USA. With this in mind, we ask why almost one million American Indians failed to respond to the tribal affiliation part of the Census 2000 race question. We investigate four hypotheses about why one-third of multiracial American Indians and one-sixth of single-race American Indians did not write any response to the tribal affiliation question: (1) survey item non-response that undermines all fill-in-the-blank questions; (2) a non-salient tribal identity; (3) a genealogy-based affiliation; and (4) a mestizo identity, which does not require a tribe. We use multivariate logistic regression models and high-density restricted-use Census 2000 data. We find support for the first two hypotheses and note that predictors differ substantially for single-race versus multiple-race American Indians.  相似文献

Social scientists have utilized daily time use studies as one method of understanding everyday lives. The bulk of this research, usually quantitative, identifies broad racial, ethnic and gender differences. Yet, certain groups and questions are typically excluded in daily time use research. One such group is American Indians. To address this lacuna, we look at the deeply discussed view that American Indians are closer to nature than other US ethnic groups. We use a nationally representative sample of individual daily time use (American Time Use Survey; n?=?136,960) to look at leisure time outdoors. Our results show that American Indians report greater time spent outdoors but that this is only statistically significant for those who identify as exclusively American Indian (not for American Indians that are multi- and bi-racial). This study confirms previous qualitative research that suggests American Indians have a distinct relationship with nature.  相似文献

Mitochondrial malic enzyme (EC 1.1.1.40; MEM) was examined by starch-gel electrophoresis on post-mortem brain samples from 453 unrelated subjects of either sex comprising 161 Chinese, 150 Indians and 113 Malays and 29 from other racial groups. The estimated gene frequencies of MEM1 were found to be 0.7111, 0.6100 and 0.6769 in Chinese, Indians and Malays, respectively. No significant deviation from the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium was observed in Chinese and Malays. However, there was a significant deviation with a deficiency of heterozygotes among Indians. Conventional risk factors for coronary heart disease (CHD) do not completely account for the observed increase in premature CHD in people from the Indian subcontinent or for Asian Indians who have immigrated to the USA. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of immigration to the USA on plasma levels of lipoprotein [a] (Lp[a]) and other independent risk factors for CHD in Asian Indians. Three subject groups were studied: group 1, 57 subjects living in India and diagnosed with CHD (CHD patients); group 2, 46 subjects living in India and showing no symptoms of CHD (control subjects); group 3, 206 Asian Indians living in the USA. Fasting blood samples were drawn to determine plasma levels of triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein [LDL cholesterol (LDL-Chol)], high density lipoprotein [HDL cholesterol (HDL-Chol)], apolipoprotein B-100 (apoB-100), and Lp[a]. Apolipoprotein [a] (apo[a]) size polymorphism was determined by immunoblotting. Plasma TG, apoB-100, and Lp[a] concentrations were higher in CHD patients than in control and USA groups. CHD patients had higher levels of TC and LDL-Chol and lower HDL-Chol than control subjects. However, the USA population had higher levels of TC, LDL-Chol, and apoB-100 and lower HDL-Chol than control subjects. Plasma Lp[a] levels were inversely correlated with the relative molecular weight of the more abundant of each subject's two apo[a] isoforms (MAI), and CHD patients showed higher frequencies of lower relative molecular weights among MAI. Our observed changes in lipid profiles suggest that immigrating to the USA may place Asian Indians at increased risk for CHD. This study suggests that elevated plasma Lp[a] confers genetic predisposition to CHD in Asian Indians, and nutritional and environmental factors further increase the risk of CHD. This is the first report implicating MAI size as a predictor for development of premature CHD in Asian Indians. Including plasma Lp[a] concentration and apo[a] phenotype in screening procedures may permit early detection and preventive treatment of CHD in this population.  相似文献

Characterization of population genetic variation and structure can be used as tools for research in human genetics and population isolates are of great interest. The aim of the present study was to characterize the genetic structure of Xavante Indians and compare it with other populations. The Xavante, an indigenous population living in Brazilian Central Plateau, is one of the largest native groups in Brazil. A subset of 53 unrelated subjects was selected from the initial sample of 300 Xavante Indians. Using 86,197 markers, Xavante were compared with all populations of HapMap Phase III and HGDP-CEPH projects and with a Southeast Brazilian population sample to establish its population structure. Principal Components Analysis showed that the Xavante Indians are concentrated in the Amerindian axis near other populations of known Amerindian ancestry such as Karitiana, Pima, Surui and Maya and a low degree of genetic admixture was observed. This is consistent with the historical records of bottlenecks experience and cultural isolation. By calculating pair-wise F(st) statistics we characterized the genetic differentiation between Xavante Indians and representative populations of the HapMap and from HGDP-CEPH project. We found that the genetic differentiation between Xavante Indians and populations of Ameridian, Asian, European, and African ancestry increased progressively. Our results indicate that the Xavante is a population that remained genetically isolated over the past decades and can offer advantages for genome-wide mapping studies of inherited disorders.  相似文献

A statistical and epidemiological review of British Columbia native Indian and non-Indian mortality revealed that accidents were the leading cause of death among Indians but ranked only fourth among non-Indians. Comparison of accidental death rates by age and sex showed that, without exception, the rates among Indians were considerably higher than the corressponding rates for non-Indians. While the Indians represented some 2% of the total population of British Columbia, they accounted for over 10% of the total accident fatalities, 29% of drownings, and 21% of fatal burns.Socioeconomic, environmental and psychosocial factors and excessive drinking are considered the chief causes responsible for this rather unusual epidemiological phenomenon.This study revealed certain hazardous conditions which are specific to the Indian''s present way of life. In the authors'' opinion the recognition of these specific hazards is imperative for the planning of effective preventive campaigns.  相似文献

Phenotyping for isoniazid inactivation in Canadian Eskimos and Indians showed that the former are all fast acetylators, while only 63.4% of the Indians examined belonged to the same group. Further studies are suggested to confirm this initial finding.During the investigation metabolic studies were carried out to devise a reliable urine test for phenotyping of isoniazid inactivators, to replace the fall-off technique which required venipunctures. The simplicity of the new urine test makes it suitable for mass examinations.  相似文献

Abstract

In the late 1800s, boarding schools sponsored by the United States government were created for the education and socialization of American Indian youth. These institutions gradually and purposefully pursued a policy of total assimilation of American Indians into the mainstream of society. The boarding schools failed in their ultimate goal to assimilate Indians. Surprisingly, however, they did attain limited acceptance among many Oklahoma Indians. The segregationist policies of the boarding schools are interpreted as having inadvertently perpetuated the formation of an Indian identity. Frequent visiting by family, segregation of Indian from non-Indian students, and symbolic association of the boarding schools with federal government obligations are identified as factors which contributed to the maintenance of this identity.  相似文献

Human endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) is one isoform of the nitric oxide synthases that are responsible for nitric oxide synthesis from L-arginine. The gene encoding eNOS contains a 27-bp VNTR polymorphism in intron 4. We report here for the first time the presence of a novel allele 3, which was absent in all other populations studied to date, in 1.7% each of Singaporean Indians and Malays. We also detected the presence of a novel genotype 3/5 in 3.4% each of Singaporean Indians and Malays. Allele 6, which was absent in Han Chinese from northern China and Taiwan and was also absent in Indians from the Indian subcontinent, was found in 2.1% of Singaporean Chinese and in 0.3% of Singaporean Indians.  相似文献

HLA antigens and other genetic markers in the Mapuche Indians of Argentina   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
A total of 107 Mapuche Indians living in western Argentina were studied with respect to 16 genetic systems. For HLA, there were a few differences in relation to previous studies; and considering the averages observed in 15 other South American tribes, Mapuche Indians showed low values for A2, A9 and C3, but high ones for A28 and B16. This is the first report of the presence (in low frequencies, 1-6%) of alleles C2, C6 and C7, as well as of DR antigens (most frequent alleles DR4 and DR2) in South American Indians. Some peculiar reactions shown by products of locus B suggest the presence of antigens that are characteristic of the Mapuche. As for the other systems, the frequencies of R1 (Rh) and PGM1(1) were lower but those for r (Rh), GLO1 and Hp1 were higher than the averages obtained considering previous studies of this ethnic group. Other salient findings were the variability observed in the PGM2 and C3 systems, and the low prevalence of Bfs.  相似文献

In a study of Malaysians of different racial groups, 1,510 sera (908 from Malays, 371 from Chinese and 231 from Indians) were identified for their protease inhibitor (Pi) types. The gene frequencies for the alleles PiM, PiS and PiX in Malays were, respectively, 0.979, 0.015, and 0.007. In Chinese, the frequencies were 0.981, 0.019 and 0.000, and in Indians they were 0.976, 0.24, and 0.000. It is interesting that the usually rare PiX type is found in appreciable frequency in the Malays. Two different types with unusual behavior and obscure origin were also found.  相似文献

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries the Indians of Virginia, like marginalized native communities throughout the Southeast, were enmeshed in struggles over their identity, as "one-drop" rules were increasingly applied and formalized. At that time several scholars, including James Mooney, wrote on the Powhatan tribes in American Anthropologist, the nascent journal of a professionalizing discipline. Previously, most works on the Virginia Indians had been published locally; after a brief florescence on the national scene (roughly corresponding to the 300th anniversary of English settlement in Powhatan territory), that pattern resumed. The works published on Virginia Indians in this period, and the contrast with their relative invisibility in professional journals over the following decades, cast light on U.S. anthropology's development as a profession. This article examines the transition from local to national organizations from the standpoint of ethnographic inclusion of such marginalized peoples. Salivary proline-rich protein (PRP) polymorphism, PRH1, PRH2, Ps, Pm (PmF), PmS and Gl, were investigated in three ethnic groups in Singapore: Chinese, Malays and Indians. The phenotype and gene frequencies were presented and comparison with other ethnic groups was made. The As protein, which was recently found in Japanese but not in Caucasians as a new allelic product of the PRH1 locus, was also observed in Chinese and Malays but not in Indians. Another allelic product (Ps4) of Ps protein polymorphism was found in Malays but not in Chinese and Indians. The results indicate the usefulness of salivary PRP polymorphism as markers in population genetic studies.  相似文献
