Some observations on the biology of Cirrhinus reba (Cuvier) from Muzaffarnagar (U.P., India) have been made during the period July 1966 to June 1969. In C. reba both males and females mature simultaneously. The gonads attain the maximum weight in June and minimum in November. There is a definite seasonal cycle in relative condition. The relative condition in both male and female is highest in June preceeding the period of breeding. It is the gonad weight which influences the fluctuations of the relative condition. The visceral weight does not exert any significant effect on it. It is found possible to determine the spawning season and its extent, from the seasonal fluctuations of the relative condition. The present studies have also thrown light on the maturation and spawning habits of C. reba . The fish has only one spawning season of short duration, running from July to early September. In a mature ovary, the mature ova form only one mode which is sharply distinguished from the immature stock.  相似文献

The breeding biology of Oligolepis acutipennis (C. & V.), a gobiid fish abundant in the estuaries and brackish water tracts of the south-west coast of India was studied. Data on the intra-ovarian development of ova, the breeding season, spawning frequency, size at first maturity and sex-ratio were based on observations for 1 year. The size distribution of ova showed no significant variation between different regions of the ovary. The gonads were classified into five maturity stages. The sequence of development of ova to maturity indicated two batches of ova developed in a single ovary in a year. The minimum size at first maturity of females was less than that of males. Seasonal variation in gonad weight and the percentage occurrence of various maturity stages of gonads showed that the fish has a protracted breeding period in which two seasons can be recognized. The females dominate over males in numbers except in the non-breeding months.  相似文献

Optimal life-history models generally predict that the reproductive effort of iteroparous organisms may increase with age, as their expectation of future reproduction decreases. The population of three-spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) in the Camargue (Rhone River Delta, France) is annual, all adults dying after their first breeding season. As the three-spined stickleback is a multiple spawner, we tested the hypothesis that reproductive effort may increase during the breeding season on field data. From 1987 to 1998, 653 female sticklebacks were collected in the field during the breeding seasons. The body size, body weight and weights of the liver, gonads and carcass were measured for these individuals. Only gravid females with mature eggs (176 fish) were included in the analysis. Considering the female three-spined stickleback as a capital breeder, the energetic resources available for allocation between soma and gonads were estimated by its body weight. Somatic condition decreased during the breeding season and reproductive effort (gonad weight relative to body weight) increased. These patterns did not vary significantly between years. These observed variations in reproductive effort during the breeding season can be interpreted as empirical evidence of a trade-off between reproductive effort and expectation of future reproduction.  相似文献

The gonadosomatic index of sobaity Sparidentex hasta fits well with the natural spawning season of February-March. At 12 and 24 months all the population matured as males. However, during this time, between April-September intersex gonads were seen. From October of the third year of life, females were seen for the first time. These changes in the histology of the gonads were correlated with the hormonal profile. Testosterone showed no significant correlation with sex but 11-ketotestosterone correlated very well with the mature male gonads and thus can be used for sexing. Oestradiol-17β higher in sex reversed individuals (females) in the spawning season than in males. The sequence of events in the protandrous sex change of this fish during the first two spawning seasons is male → intersex → male. However, during the third spawning season (age 36–37 months) this sequence is male →intersex → male or female (10–17%).  相似文献

The gonad maturation cycle of Siganus sutor (Valenciennes, 1835) (Osteichthyes-Siganidae) is described for both males and females using macroscopic criteria for the testes and both macroscopic and microscopic ones for staging the ovaries. Siganus suror has two major spawning seasons: one in January/February and the other in May/June. The presence of these seasons is established by (a) the temporal variations in the condition factor and in the relative weight of the gonads, (b) the progression of peaks of maturity stages with seasonal occurrence of spent fish in the samples, and (c) the seasonal appearance ofjuveniles. This is a significant result for a tropical marine fish.  相似文献

This investigation examines the biology of Barbus liberiensis , a small cyprinid living in the forest streams of Sierra Leone and Liberia, in relation to seasonal changes in the environment. The population studied showed a single discrete breeding season coinciding with the early part of the rains. Maturing fish previously marked moved upstream at this time. The pattern of gonad development is analysed and the relationship of fecundity to body size is defined numerically. The total and somatic (i.e. excluding gonad weights) condition of the fishes, relative to the length/weight data in September-November when the gonads are resting, reach a peak at spawning time for both mature males and females and for immature fish. The pattern of condition during a year differs in the two sexes.
B. liberiensis consumes a wide variety of foods but relies largely on insects and higher plant fragments. Debris from the forest canopy is an important source of nutriment. The fish feed, during the daytime and possibly at night, throughout the year. Experiments to determine the rate at which food passes through the gut are described and show that food passage is rapid.
The seasonal cycles in condition and reproduction are discussed in relation to cycles in some other tropical and temperate riverine fishes.  相似文献

Gonad development of the silver therapon Leiopotherapon plumbeus in two volcanic crater  lake  habitats (Sampaloc Lake, Taal Lake) in south Luzon, Philippines was examined during the annual reproductive cycle. The minimum body size‐at‐maturity of fish in these two lake habitats was also compared. Four gonad development stages were characterized as basis for the classification of ovarian (immature, maturing, mature, spawned) and testicular maturation (immature, maturing, mature) phases. The occurrence of all development stages in individual gonads suggest an asynchronous development whereby advanced stages are recruited continuously from a pool of younger stage germ cells to result in elevated female and male GSI throughout the annual cycle due to active gonadogenesis. Together with the increasing occurrence of advanced stage oocytes and spermatozoa from March until October, the elevated GSI of fish may indicate peak gonadal growth during the onset of the dry season (December–January) for eventual spawning from the beginning (May–June) until the end of the wet season (October–November). In both lake habitats, male fish were smaller than females but, regardless of sex, the minimum size‐at‐maturity of fish in Sampaloc Lake was significantly smaller than fish in Taal Lake. Overall, asynchronous development during oogenesis and spermatogenesis allows for year‐round reproduction of silver therapon, with elevated gonad growth in the dry season in preparation for spawning during the wet season. Compared with fish in Taal Lake, a smaller size‐at‐maturity of fish in Sampaloc Lake may be a response of the wild fishery stock to long‐term high fishing mortality and degradation of the lake habitat.  相似文献

Reproductive characteristics of the male herring in the northern Baltic Sea   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The gonad weight and gonadosomatic index of the male Baltic herring Clupea harengus membras L., were highest at the beginning of the reproductive season (April/May), the values decreasing towards the end of it (July/August) during 1988–1991. The decline could not be explained by fish size but may have been due to fish condition. A high individual variation was typical for both gonad weights and gonadosomatic indices in fish of the same size and maturity stage. The mean density of sperm cells was significantly higher in June (34·9 × 109 ml−1) than in July (19·2 × 109 ml−1, Mann-Whitney U= 17; P<0·05), the variation among the males being high in both groups. Electron microscope analysis showed a severe disruption of the mitochondrial elements in males spawning at 22°C.  相似文献

Reproductive biology ofAwaous guamensis, an amphidromous Hawaiian goby   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Synopsis Spawning season, size at first reproduction, oocyte maturation, and fecundity ofAwaous guamensis, an amphidromous Hawaiian goby, were studied from June 1989 through May 1991 in the Wainiha River, Kau'ai, Hawai'i. Female fish larger than 73 mm standard length (SL) had mature gonads from August through December in 1989 and 1990. Gonadosomatic index (GSI) values for mature females ranged from 0.2 to 14.5 during the spawning season. Male fish larger than 64 mm SL had elevated GSI values from June 1989 through December 1989 and from August 1990 through December 1990. Mature sperm were found in two male fish collected in January and February. GSI values for mature males ranged from less than 0.01 to 4.0 in the spawning season. Size-frequency distributions of measurements of vitellogenic oocyte diameters and microscopic observations of oocytes indicated this species has group-synchronous oocyte development. Ovarian maturation stages examined over a 29-month period suggest that members of the stock spawned at different times within the spawning season, although mass spawning events have been documented for this species. Estimates of clutch sizes from nests measured in situ were comparable to estimates of potential fecundity from in vitro examination of ovaries, and indicated that female fish deposited an entire clutch during a spawning event. No evidence for multiple spawning by an individual fish in a single season was found. However, microscopic observations of brown bodies in some ovaries suggested that individual fish probably spawn more than once in a lifetime.  相似文献

Notropis longirostris (Hay), the longnose shiner, in Catahoula Creek, Jourdan River drainage, Hancock County, Mississippi, was studied from May 1970 to May 1972. In 1971 reproduction occurred from late March into October, as indicated by gross examination of testes, breeding tubercles and breeding colour in males, and ovarian weights, measurements of ova, and gross examination of ovaries in females. Gross examination of ovaries in 1970 also indicated an extended reproductive season. Generally no significant differences from a 1 : 1 sex ratio or in the size of males and females in collections taken during the reproductive season were indicated. Males and females matured about the same size. Most females were sexually mature when 29–30 mm SL. The smallest female with mature ova was 28 mm; however, the majority of females did not have mature ova until 31–33 mm. The number of mature ova produced prior to spawning ranged from 15 to 129 for females 30.8–44 mm SL. There were significant differences in the number of mature ova with time, two peaks being indicated: the first in late March and April at the beginning of the reproductive period and the second in early July about the middle of the season. This conclusion is also supported by ovarian weight measurements and length frequency histograms. The mean diameters of mature ova ranged from 0.70–1.05 mm, averaging 0.90 mm, and were not significantly correlated with length. Most fish live about 1–1.5 years and do not live through two winters, indicating an annual turnover in the population. Maximum size was about 48 mm SL. Specific characteristics of the life history pattern of N. longirostris are discussed in relation to ecological conditions of the habitat.  相似文献

We studied fecundity and growth in populations of the silver mullet, Mugilcurema, in coastal areas of northeastern Venezuela between March 1992 and July 1993. The average number of oocytes in gonads of 23-42 cm adults was 54 x 10(4), and the relative fecundity was 1,311 oocytes g-1 of fish. The size of mature oocytes did not vary in different portions of the same gonad (p > 0.05) or among the adults in three populations studied. The average egg diameter for adults was 426 microns (CI = 4.34). Age of juveniles, collected from the La Restinga Lagoon at about monthly intervals, from counts of growth lines on the otoliths ranged from 50 to 240 days. The relation of age (number of growth lines) to standard length follows an exponential growth curve. The growth of juveniles varied seasonally and was greatest during the rainy season (April to August), when temperatures were highest. The time of spawning has probably been adapted so that peak recruitment into the lagoons occurs just prior to the rainy season when conditions for growth are most favorable.  相似文献

The present study investigated the reproductive biology and histological study of gonads of Schizothorax plagiostomus female and its relationship with gonadosomatic index. The study period was from July, 2013 to June, 2014. Fish samples within the range of 25.5 cm to 40.33 cm in total length and weight ranging from 250 g to 580 g were used during the study. The mean GSI value of female fish fluctuated between minimum 1.059 ± 0.62 in August to maximum 14.95 ± 2.69 in May. The results showed that S. plagiostomus breeds during May, June and July confirmed by the gonadosomatic index and egg diameter measurements. The ova diameter ranged from 0.3 to 2.02 mm with minimum in July and maximum in June. The breeding status confirmed by gonadosomatic index (GSI) and ovarian histology showed six stages of ovarian maturation (viz. stage I: chromatin nucleaolar stage; II: perinucleolar stage; III: cortical alveolar stage; IV: vitellogenic yolk stage; V: ripe mature stage; and VI: atretic stage). Results show that S. plagiostomus is a seasonal breeder with unimodal spawning activity.  相似文献

Wet and dry weights of tissue were measured and concentrations of glycogen, lipid and protein were estimated for the liver, gonad and carcass of male sticklebacks from an annual population collected each month over one complete year. In young-of-the-year there is one period of rapid weight gain, in all three body regions (liver, carcass and gonads) but particularly of the carcass, in the autumn and a second in spring and early summer. This is accompanied by an increase in the water content of all three body regions. The gonadosomatic index also increases sharply in spring and early summer. Young sticklebacks accumulate lipid and glycogen slowly during the autumn and winter of their first year of life and more rapidly from late winter to early summer. Thus, the period of most rapid accumulation of these reserves coincides with the time when body weight and gonad maturation are also increasing sharply. Lipid and glycogen levels fall during the reproductive season in those males that breed, so that by July they are reduced to 43% and 37% (respectively) of their peak values in May. Levels of protein increase throughout the year as the fish grow, but in breeding males by July the concentration of protein in the carcass falls to 70% of pre-breeding levels. Breeding males therefore reach the end of the reproductive season with their total energy reserves severely reduced, and consequently they suffer a very high mortality. In contrast, adult males that fail to reproduce survive beyond the breeding season. They continue to gain weight and to accumulate lipid and glycogen from August to September, but these energy reserves fall (to levels comparable to those of post-breeding fish) in December, when these fish probably die. These results demonstrate that in male sticklebacks, growth and gonad maturation can be sustained in parallel with the accumulation of energy reserves, which are subsequently extensively depleted as a result of reproductive activities.  相似文献

This paper presents data on the reproductive biology of Liza subviridis , a little studied mullet species. The fish is heterosexual, exhibiting external fertilization. Six maturity stages can be macroscopically identified in the testes and seven in the ovaries. The macroscopic changes in the gonads are manifestations of histological changes occurring in the development of sperm cells and oocytes. First sexual maturity is attained in the length ranges of 9.5–11.5 cm and 10.5–11.5 cm in male and female fish respectively. The fecundity for fish measuring 10.3–13.9 cm in standard length ranged from 40 000–145 000 eggs. The relationship between fecundity ( F ) and length ( L ) can be represented as: F = 1.9044 L 4.2998. The spawning duration in L. subviridis is restricted to a short and definite period, with all ripe ova being released within a single spawning act. A pronounced spawning season can be detected to extend from June to November. However, during off-seasons, some spawning also occurs. The correlations between spawning, rainfall and air temperature is discussed.  相似文献

We investigated the breeding habits of the bastard halibut, Tarphops oligolepis, in the southwest of Kyushu Island, Japan. This fish was found to have two spawning seasons in a year (around July and November); individual fish spawned over the two spawning seasons. During the spawning seasons, males established territories. Home ranges of females overlapped with those of other females and with territories of plural males. The courtship partner changed during a day, and multiple matings among both sexes were observed during a spawning season, suggesting that T. oligolepis bred promiscuously. This is the first report of the mating system among Paralichthyidae. Received: October 18, 2000 / Revised: May 7, 2001 / Accepted: July 9, 2001  相似文献

The seasonal vertical migration of adultCalanus hyperboreus Krøyer and their female reproductive biology have been studied in the central Greenland Sea, based on 7-month coverage during one annual cycle. Females dwelled in surface waters only between April and July. Gonad maturation began after the summer descent into deeper waters between September and October in the absence of food. Breeding was assessed from gonad development and egg production experiments. It started around the beginning of November and was mostly completed by March/April, before the spring ascent. The overwintering depth of females ranged from close to the surface to 3000 m, and mature females had a preference for shallower depths. Males were mostly found during the breeding period, where they inhabited the 500- to 1000-m layer. Female dry weight was highest in August and November and lowest in February. Field observations were supplemented by observations on gonad development and egg production of females, which were collected in June and August and kept in the laboratory for up to 6 months. Clutch size, spawning interval and fecundity were determined at 0°C. Females collected in June were mature earlier. Due to their low dry weight, they developed only small gonads and very few of them spawned. Females from August were much fatter and produced up to 1000 eggs in several clutches deposited at regular intervals.  相似文献

Barbus bynni begins to mature at Age IV. Ripening of gonads of mature fish starts in May when water temperature approaches the annual maximum. However, the spawning season coincides with the onset of the flood season in July. These facts, as well as the cyclic growth of the gonads, show that B. bynni spawns once a year. Fecundity varies with size of fish and gonads. However, this levels off in the middle size group. At this age the fecundity was estimated to be 1 424 693 eggs.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of albacore tuna, Thunnus alalunga, in the South Pacific Ocean was investigated with samples collected during broad-scale sampling between 2006 and 2011. Histology was done in a single laboratory according to standard protocols and the data analysed using generalized linear mixed-effects models. The sex ratio of albacore was female biased for fish smaller than approximately 60 cm FL and between 85 and 95 cm, and progressively more male biased above 95 cm FL. Spawning activity was synchronised across the region between 10°S and 25°S during the austral spring and summer where sea surface temperatures were ≥24 °C. The average gonad index varied among regions, with fish in easterly longitudes having heavier gonads for their size than fish in westerly longitudes. Albacore, while capable of spawning daily, on average spawn every 1.3 days during the peak spawning months of October to December. Spawning occurs around midnight and the early hours of the morning. Regional variation in spawning frequency and batch fecundity were not significant. The proportion of active females and the spawning fraction increased with length and age, and mature small and young fish were less active at either end of the spawning season than larger, older fish. Batch fecundity estimates ranged from 0.26 to 2.83 million oocytes with a mean relative batch fecundity of 64.4 oocytes per gram of body weight. Predicted batch fecundity and potential annual fecundity increased with both length and age. This extensive set of reproductive parameter estimates provides many of the first quantitative estimates for this population and will substantially improve the quality of biological inputs to the stock assessment for South Pacific albacore.  相似文献

The biology of grey mullet, Mugil cephalus L., adult populations in a coastal lagoon in Sri Lanka is presented. The percentage of grey mullet catches increased with increasing salinity. The larger fish were found in the deeper areas and the relationship of total length to depth was L = 8.4602e0.0058 D where L = total length and D = depth (cm). The overall female to male ratio was 0.95 : 1.0 and seasonal variation in the sex ratio is considered to be caused by the differential timing in the spawning migrations of the two sexes. Males mature at 34.0 cm and females at 31.5 cm. The main spawning season was between January and May and it is hypothesized that the breeding season is geared to utilize the favourable time period, for growth of fry, in the lagoon. Grey mullet sheds its eggs in batches. Fecundity varied from 0.45 to 4.2 million in fish ranging in length from 32 to 56 cm and in weight from 0.7 to 2.2 kg. Fecundity was significantly correlated to body length and weight and gonad weight.  相似文献
