Using transmission electron microscopy, light microscopy (Giemsa May‐Grumwald), and the Periodic Acid‐Schif (PAS) and Sudan Black B staining techniques, hemocytes in the hemolymph of adult female Dactylopius coccus were characterized. The following, in order of abundance, were found: granulocytes, plasmatocytes, prohemocytes, and oenocytoids. Granulocytes varied in size with granulations in the cytoplasm, a large quantity of mitochondria, rugose endoplasmatic reticulum, ribosomes and vesicles, central or exocentric, spherical and occasionally lobulate nucleus. Plasmatocytes were polymorphic with irregularities in the plasma membrane; cytoplasm contained mitochondria, rugose endoplasmatic reticulum and vesicles, and exocentric, spherical, or irregular nucleus. In both types of hemocytes, scant polysaccharides and lipids were found. Prohemocytes were small and spherical with homogeneous cytoplasm and large exocentric nuclei. Oenocytoids were oval or irregular with dense homogeneous cytoplasm and elongated exocentric nuclei. The percentages of granulocytes on different days (d 1 and 10) during the life of the adult female were significantly different, as were those of plasmatocytes on d 30 and 50 and prohemocytes on d 1 and 50. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

Little is known about the influence of visual characteristics other than colour on flavor perception, and the complex interactions between more than two sensory modalities. This study focused on the effects of recognizability of visual (texture) information on flavor perception of odorized sweet beverages. Participants rated the perceived sweetness of odorized sucrose solutions in the presence or absence of either a congruent or incongruent visual context. Odors were qualitatively reminiscent of sweet foods (strawberry and caramel) or not (savoury). Visual context was either an image of the same sweet foods (figurative context) or a visual texture derived from this product (non-figurative context). Textures were created using a texture synthesis method that preserved perceived food qualities while removing object information. Odor-taste combinations were rated sweeter within a figurative than a non-figurative context. This behaviour was exhibited for all odor-taste combinations, even in trials without images, indicating sustained priming by figurative visual context. A non-figurative context showed a transient sweetening effect. Sweetness was generally enhanced most by the strawberry odor. We conclude that the degree of recognizability of visual information (figurative versus non-figurative), influences flavor perception differently. Our results suggest that this visual context priming is mediated by separate sustained and transient processes that are differently evoked by figurative and non-figurative visual contexts. These components operate independent of the congruency of the image-odor-taste combinations.  相似文献

A comparative analysis is given of various types of systems of selecting biologically active substances. A theoretical probability model of tests on chemical compounds for biological activity (screening) has been constructed which permits an evaluation of the efficacy of screening on the basis of fairly reasonable assumptions. It has been shown that this efficacy decreases in time with a fixed number of types of activity taken into consideration and rises sharply with an increase in the number of types of activity of chemical compounds taken into account in the tests.  相似文献

Receptor neuron responses to plant volatiles, trapped by head-space procedures, were examined in the pine weevil Hylobius abietis, using gas chromatography linked with electrophysiological recordings from single neurons. Seventy-two receptor neurons were tested 173 times for various plant volatile mixtures, either via a polar or a non-polar column.
  1. All responses appeared as increased firing rates which followed the concentration profiles of the GC-eluted compounds.
  2. The neurons were classified separately for the two column types in 17 and 19 groups respectively, according to the compounds they responded to. It suggests that the plant odour information is encoded by a large, but limited number of receptor neuron types.
  3. Most neurons responded to a limited number of compounds (1–5) and showed a marked best response to one of them, whereas additional responses to several other components which seems to be structurally similar, was recorded for some neurons. It suggests that the plant odour receptor neurons are rather narrowly than broadly tuned, and that each neuron is specialized for receiving information about one or a few related compounds.
  4. Most neurons responded to monoterpenes, whereas the other neurons responded to compounds of other categories.
  5. Both major and minor plant volatile components activated specifically receptor neurons.

Art preferences are affected by a number of subjective factors. This paper reports two studies which investigated whether need for closure shapes implicit art preferences. It was predicted that higher need for closure would negatively affect implicit preferences for abstract art. In study one, 60 participants were tested for dispositional need for closure and then completed an Implicit Association Test (IAT) task to measure their implicit preference for abstract (vs. figurative) paintings. In study two, 54 participants completed the same IAT task. In this experiment need for closure was both manipulated by cognitive load and tapped as a dispositional trait. Results of the studies converged in showing that after controlling for other important individual factors such as participants''expertise and cognitive ability, need for closure, both as a dispositional trait and as a situationally induced motivational state, was negatively associated with implicit preference for abstract art.  相似文献

Magdalenian signs are more numerous and more varied than ones of another periods in the Upper Palaeolithic. In the 3986 signs studied in 28 caves, 2364 signs, or 59,3% of signs are associated with figurative representations. For the question about the relations between the figurative representations and the signs associated, we chose four parameters: thematic analysis, interior analysis, chronological analysis and external analysis. Especially in three caves like Les Combarelles I, Rouffignac (Périgord, France) and Altxerri (Spanish Basque), we got interesting results by those analyses. The thematic analysis let find whether the themes are associated with specific signs. In the many caves, the most numerous figurative representations are often associated with signs. About the interior analysis, many signs are located on the flank of the animal figures. And, the chronological analysis show that the signs were made before the figurative representations the same times that after. The anteriority of making signs and the posterity depends on the place (external analysis) in the three caves. So, our analysis methods with those varied parameters make the signs characterized by type, by cave or by region.  相似文献

A survey conducted as part of an International Workshop on Genotoxicity Testing (IWGT) has identified a number of compounds that appear to be more readily detected in vivo than in vitro. The reasons for this property varies from compound to compound and includes metabolic differences; the influence of gut flora; higher exposures in vivo compared to in vitro; effects on pharmacology, in particular folate depletion or receptor kinase inhibition. It is possible that at least some of these compounds are detectable in vitro if a specific in vitro test is chosen as part of the test battery, but the 'correct' choice of test may not always be obvious when testing a compound of unknown genotoxicity. It is noted that many of the compounds identified in this study interfere with cell cycle kinetics and this can result in either aneugenicity or chromosome breakage. A decision tree is outlined as a guide for the evaluation of compounds that appear to be genotoxic agents in vivo but not in vitro. The regulatory implications of these findings are discussed.  相似文献

As an alternative to the conventional ZAF correction for microprobe analysis, a combined absorption and atomic number correction can be obtained from ø(ρz) curves. This can be easily applied to the analysis of bulk frozen-hydrated biological samples using inorganic standards. It is shown that the method is accurate by analysis of a number of organic and inorganic compounds and gelatine models. Because the corrections vary little with changes in protein concentration over the normal cellular range, iterative ø(ρz) computations are not necessary and the correction procedure is therefore fast and simple.  相似文献

This article considers the social circumstances of making a marriage diagram, on the island of Ambrym in Vanuatu. It offers a reconsideration of the rather famous case of the 'six-section marriage system' as demonstrated by Cambridge anthropologist Bernard Deacon. It relates this idea of a system to the indigenous practice of making figurative drawings in the sand. The argument is that the marriage diagram drawn for Bernard Deacon was merely an instance of Vanuatu people's institutionalized capability of totalizing social flows and making them into aesthetic shapes.  相似文献

Fresh beef allowed to undergo microbial spoilage at 7 C showed decreases in quantity and types of amino acids as well as decreases in nucleotides when the initial number of bacteria per gram was high. When the initial number of bacteria was low, decreases were either not detectable or of low orders. It seems, therefore, that low-molecular-weight compounds of the above type support the growth of beef-spoilage bacteria rather than primary beef proteins. These low-molecular-weight compounds provide the probable sources of ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, and other such compounds associated with beef allowed to spoil at low temperatures.  相似文献

Resistance to available antibiotics in pathogenic bacteria is currently a global challenge since the number of strains that are resistant to multiple types of antibiotics has increased dramatically each year and has spread worldwide. To unlock this problem, the use of an ‘antibiotic adjuvant’ in combination with an antibiotic is now being exploited. This approach enables us to prolong the lifespan of these life-saving drugs. This digests review provides an overview of the main types of antibiotic adjuvants, the basis of their operation and the remaining issues to be tackled in this field. Particular emphasis is placed on those compounds that are already in clinical development, namely β-lactamase inhibitors.  相似文献

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) types are sexually transmitted infections that cause a number of human cancers. According to the competitive exclusion principle in ecology, HPV types that have lower transmission probabilities and shorter durations of infection should be outcompeted by more virulent types. This, however, is not the case, as numerous HPV types co-exist, some which are less transmissible and more easily cleared than others. This paper examines whether this exception to the competitive exclusion principle can be explained by the aggregation of infection with HPV types, which results in patchy spatial distributions of infection, and what implications this has for the effect of vaccination on multiple HPV types. A deterministic transmission model is presented that models the patchy distribution of infected individuals using Lloyd??s mean crowding. It is first shown that higher aggregation can result in a reduced capacity for onward transmission and reduce the required efficacy of vaccination. It is shown that greater patchiness in the distribution of lower prevalence HPV types permits co-existence. This affirms the hypothesis that the aggregation of HPV types provides an explanation for the violation of the competitive exclusion principle. Greater aggregation of lower prevalence types has important implications where type-specific HPV vaccines also offer cross-protection against non-target types. It is demonstrated that the degree of cross-protection can be less than the degree of vaccine protection conferred against directly targeted types and still result in the elimination of non-target types when these non-target types are patchily distributed.  相似文献

Antibiotics have been used for more than 50 years and are the cornerstone of infectious disease treatment; in addition, these low-molecular-weight bioactive compounds have been applied to many other therapeutic purposes. However, there is almost no information on the evolutionary biology or ecology of naturally occurring low-molecular-weight compounds. The large number of different structural types and the extremely broad range of biological activities of organic molecules produced by microbes raise many questions concerning their roles in nature. Recent evidence for the enormous complexity of microbial populations in the environment favors the notion that the principal roles of small molecules in microbial ecology are cell–cell communication and not antibiosis.  相似文献

The prevailing terminological confusion around the concept ‘diversity’ has hampered accurate communication and caused diversity issues to appear unnecessarily complicated. In fact, a consistent terminology for phenomena related to (species) diversity is already available. When this terminology is adhered to, diversity emerges as an easily understood concept. It is important to differentiate between diversity itself and a diversity index: an index of something is just a surrogate for the thing itself. The conceptual problem of defining diversity also has to be separated from the practical problem of deciding how to adequately quantify diversity for a community of interest. In practice, diversity can be quantified for any dataset where units of observation (such as individuals) have been classified into types (such as species). All that needs to be known is what proportion of the observed units belong to a type of mean abundance. Diversity equals the inverse of this mean, and it quantifies the effective number of the types of interest. In ecology, interest often (but not always) focuses on species diversity. If the dataset consists of (or gets divided into) subunits, then the total effective number of species (gamma diversity) can be partitioned into the effective number of compositionally distinct subunits (beta diversity) and the mean effective number of species per such subunit (alpha diversity). Species richness is related to species diversity, but they are not the same thing; richness does not take the proportional abundances into account and is therefore the actual—rather than the effective—number of types. Most of the phenomena that have been called ‘beta diversity’ in the past do not quantify an effective number of types, so they should be referred to by names other than ‘diversity’ (for example, species turnover or differentiation).  相似文献

The discovery and first dates of the paintings in Grotte Chauvet provoked a new debate on the origin and characteristics of the first figurative Palaeolithic art. Since then, other art ensembles in France and Italy (Aldène, Fumane, Arcy-sur-Cure and Castanet) have enlarged our knowledge of graphic activity in the early Upper Palaeolithic. This paper presents a chronological assessment of the Palaeolithic parietal ensemble in Altxerri B (northern Spain). When the study began in 2011, one of our main objectives was to determine the age of this pictorial phase in the cave. Archaeological, geological and stylistic evidence, together with radiometric dates, suggest an Aurignacian chronology for this art. The ensemble in Altxerri B can therefore be added to the small but growing number of sites dated in this period, corroborating the hypothesis of more complex and varied figurative art than had been supposed in the early Upper Palaeolithic.  相似文献

The effect of a preliminary high potassium depolarization on the synaptosomal transport of a number of compounds was tested. It was found that a preliminary depolarization increased the transport of glutamic acid, aspartic acid, glycine and choline, all of which are known or suspected neurotransmitters or neurotransmitter precursors. Depolarization had no effect on the transport of a number of other compounds including the neurotransmitter precursor, tyrosine. The increased transports of glutamate, aspartate, glycine and choline were found to be into osmotically sensitive compartments and were not due to decreases in leakiness of synaptosomes. Kinetically, the increase in choline transport was characterized by an increase in Vmax and the increases in glutamate and glycine transport were characterized by decreases in KT. Thus, selected transport systems in synaptosomal preparations can be altered by a previous depolarization.  相似文献

The relationship between death of cells of Escherichia coli in artificial sea water and time was established as linear, and statistical tests demonstrated that the most suitable measure of survival was log per cent after 24 hr. Survival of E. coli in water supplemented with cysteine at levels of 0.284 × 10-6 to 284 × 10-6m was increased greatly over that in untreated water. To provide an insight into the mode of action of cysteine, the effect of concentration of various sulfhydryl and disulfide compounds was measured, and the influence of several compounds that lack a functional sulfur group but which are capable of affecting oxidation-reduction potential was determined. Moreover, a number of substances related structurally to cysteine were tested to ascertain their influence on the survival of cells of E. coli in artificial sea water. It appeared that the beneficial effect of cysteine was not due to the sulfhydryl group of the amino acid or to the ability of the compound to influence oxidation-reduction potential. Some sulfhydryl compounds had no favorable effect and, in general, disulfides were more active than the corresponding sulfhydryl compounds. Substances that lack a functional sulfur group but influence oxidation-reduction potential had no significant activity. The beneficial effect of a number of compounds related structurally to cysteine indicates that both an amino and carboxyl group are required for activity. It is suggested that cysteine and other amino acids act to increase survival of cells of E. coli in sea water by a chelation mechanism.  相似文献

11β-Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11β-HSD1) regulates glucocorticoid action at the pre-receptor stage by converting cortisone to cortisol. 11β-HSD1 is selectively expressed in many tissues including the liver and adipose tissue where metabolic events are important. Metabolic syndrome relates to a number of metabolic abnormalities and currently has a prevalence of >20% in adult Americans. 11β-HSD1 inhibitors are being investigated by many major pharmaceutical companies for type 2 diabetes and other abnormalities associated with metabolic syndrome. In this area of intense interest a number of structural types of 11β-HSD1 inhibitor have been identified. It is important to have an array of structural types as the physicochemical properties of the compounds will determine tissue distribution, HPA effects, and ultimately clinical utility. Here we report the discovery and synthesis of three structurally different series of novel 11β-HSD1 inhibitors that inhibit human 11β-HSD1 in the low micromolar range. Docking studies with 1–3 into the crystal structure of human 11β-HSD1 reveal how the molecules may interact with the enzyme and cofactor and give further scope for structure based drug design in the optimisation of these series.  相似文献

It has been generally accepted that regular consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables is linked with a relatively low incidence of cancers (e.g. breast, cervix, and colon). A number of plant-derived compounds have been identified that are considered to play a role in cancer prevention. However, at present there is no satisfactory explanation for the cancer preventative properties of the above-mentioned compound groups. The current review is an effort to develop a consistent and unambiguous model that explains how some plant-derived compounds can prevent tumour development. The model is based on recent discoveries in the fields of genomics and drug-metabolism; notably, the discovery that CYP1 genes are highly expressed in developing tumour cells but not in the surrounding tissue, and that a variety of plant-derived compounds are substrates for the CYP1 enzymes. Our hypothesis is that some dietary compounds act as prodrugs, i.e. compounds with little or no biological effect as such, but become pharmaceutically effective when activated. More specifically, we state that the abovementioned prodrugs are only activated in CYP1-expressing cells—i.e. cells in the early stages of tumour development—to be converted into compounds which inhibit cell growth. Thus, the prodrugs selectively kill precancerous cells early in tumour development. The review focuses on the identification of naturally-occurring prodrugs that are activated by the tumour-specific CYP1 enzymes and aims to assess their role in cancer prevention.  相似文献

It is well established that auxins play a central role in the determination of rooting capacity, which is essential for vegetative propagation. Recent studies with apple trees have pointed to significant effects of auxin stability, wound related phenolics and ethylene production in the control of adventitious rooting. In the present study, a comparative analysis of the adventitious rooting of microcuttings of Eucalyptus saligna (easy-to-root species) and Eucalyptus globulus (difficult-to-root species) was carried out with different types of auxins, light intensities, presence or absence of apical meristem, different concentrations of phenolic compounds and presence or absence of an ethylene action inhibitor. Parameters evaluated were the percent rooting, number of roots per rooted cutting, length of longest root and mean rooting time. Results showed that auxins of intermediate stability are more favorable to rooting (particularly for the recalcitrant species), higher light intensities in the presence of exogenous auxins promote the rooting response, the absence of meristematic apex or externally supplied phenolics are not limiting for the rooting induced by exogenous auxins, and ethylene appears to play a minor role in the development of adventitious roots in microcuttings of Eucalyptus, indicating that the rhizogenic response results from direct effect of auxins.  相似文献
