Serum sulphates of 5-androstene-3 beta,17 beta-diol (5-ADIOL-S), 5 alpha-androstane-3 alpha,17 beta-diol (3 alpha-DIOL-S) and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA-S), unconjugated androstene-dione (AD) and testosterone (T), sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), free androgen index (FAI), 17 alpha-hydroxyprogesterone (17OHP), luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) were measured by specific radioimmunoassay in 28 hirsute women with polycystic ovarian disease (PCO) and in normal women (n = 73). Mean levels of steroids measured were significantly elevated, and SHBG significantly depressed, in the women with PCO with values (mean +/- SE) for 5-ADIOL-S (516 +/- 51 vs 267 +/- 10 nmol/l), 3 alpha-DIOL-S (130 +/- 9 vs 52 +/- 2 nmol/l), DHEA-S (7.3 +/- 0.5 vs 4.4 +/- 0.2 mumol/l), AD (11.3 +/- 1.1 vs 3.4 +/- 0.2 nmol/l), T (3.3 +/- 0.2 vs 1.5 +/- 0.1 nmol/l) and 17OHP (5.1 +/- 0.8 vs 2.8 +/- 0.2 nmol/l). SHBG levels were 31 +/- 2.9 vs 65 +/- 2.5 nmol/l, and the free androgen index [100 x T (nmol/l) divided by (SHBG nmol/l)] was 12.5 +/- 1.4 vs 2.4 +/- 0.1. The mean LH to FSH ratio was also elevated at 2.8 +/- 0.3. These studies suggest that the measurement of 5-ADIOL-S and DHEA-S may indicate adrenal gland involvement in PCO while 3 alpha-DIOL-S appears to be a reflection of peripheral androgen metabolism. A comprehensive biochemical profile of PCO should thus include the analysis of these sulphoconjugates as well as unconjugated steroids.  相似文献

The uropygial glands of birds are sebaceous organs that contribute to the water-repellent properties of the feather coat. We studied the histological and histochemical characteristics of the uropygial gland of chimango caracara using hematoxylin and eosin (H & E), Gomori´s trichrome, orcein, Gomori´s reticulin, periodic acid-Schiff (PAS), Alcian blue (AB) and a variety of lectins. The gland is composed of two lobes and a papilla with 20 downy feathers. It is surrounded by a capsule of dense connective tissue that contains elastic, reticular and smooth muscle fibers. The papilla is delicate and has two excretory ducts. The gland mass relative to body mass was 0.143%. Both adenomer cells and their secretions were stained with Sudan IV, PAS and AB, and were positive for numerous lectins that indicated the presence of lipids and carbohydrates. Immunohistochemical techniques to detect PCNA confirmed cell proliferation in the basal stratum of the adenomer cells. The lipids and glycoconjugates secreted by the uropygial gland serve numerous functions including protection against microorganisms.  相似文献

Chronic renal failure is associated with significant reductions in total phospholipids, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylserine, and phosphatidylethanolamine of brain synaptosomes. These derangements in synaptosomal phospholipid metabolism were attributed to the state of secondary hyperparathyroidism of chronic renal failure (CRF) and the parathyroid hormone-induced accumulation of calcium in synaptosomes. This study examined whether a calcium channel blocker, verapamil, would prevent this synaptosomal calcium accumulation and correct the abnormalities in synaptosomal phospholipids in CRF. Verapamil treatment of normal rats for 21 days did not affect synaptosomal content of calcium or phospholipids. CRF of 21 days' duration was associated with a significant (P less than 0.01) increase in synaptosomal calcium (10.2 +/- 0.5 vs 7.4 +/- 0.6 nmol/mg protein) and a significant reduction (P less than 0.01) in total phospholipids (397 +/- 12 vs 529 +/- 19 nmol phospholipid P/mg protein), phosphatidylinositol (2.7 +/- 0.22 vs 4.6 +/- 0.27 nmol phospholipid P/mg protein), and phosphatidylserine (37 +/- 1.9 vs 83 +/- 5.2 nmol phospholipid P/mg protein). Simultaneous treatment of CRF rats with verapamil for 21 days reversed the synaptosomal abnormalities in calcium and phospholipid contents. Our data support the notion that the effect of excess parathyroid hormone of CRF on synaptosomal phospholipids is mainly due to the parathyroid hormone-induced calcium accumulation.  相似文献

Parasites greatly impact host fitness. The immune system is fundamental to combat endoparasites, and survival increases with greater investment in immunity. Some ectoparasites, by contrast, are reportedly combated by the use of the uropygial gland, an organ exclusive to birds, which secretes an oily substance (preen oil) that is spread on plumage. However, both mounting an immune response against a parasite and producing uropygial gland secretion depend on the same resources, a situation which may induce trade‐offs between the two antiparasitic functions. In this study, I experimentally test whether immune response is traded off against uropygial gland size in the house sparrow Passer domesticus. In the experiment, a group of sparrows were injected with an antigen (lipopolysaccharide, LPS), which stimulates the immune system, while the other group received a sham injection. The uropygial gland of LPS‐treated birds decreased significantly more than that of the control birds after treatment. Nevertheless, the effect of the treatment was limited to house sparrows with low body mass, suggesting that heavy house sparrows were able to produce an immune response while maintaining a relatively large uropygial gland. Given that uropygial gland size is strongly related to production of preen oil, these results suggest that preen oil production declines in birds in poor body condition when resources are preferentially diverted to other demanding functions, such as the immune system. Considering that the uropygial gland is involved in several fitness‐related processes in birds, the trade‐off between immune response and uropygial gland size may have important consequences for bird life histories.  相似文献

Previous studies revealed altered levels of the circulating insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and of its binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) in subjects with coronary atherosclerosis, metabolic syndrome and premature atherosclerosis. Hyperlipidemia is a powerful risk factor of atherosclerosis. We expected IGF-I and IGFBP-3 alterations in subjects with moderate/severe hyperlipidemia but without any clinical manifestation of atherosclerosis. Total IGF-I and IGFBP-3 were assessed in 56 patients with mixed hyperlipidemia (MHL; cholesterol >6.0 mmol/l, triglycerides >2.0 mmol/l), in 33 patients with isolated hypercholesterolemia (IHC; cholesterol >6.0 mmol/l, triglycerides <2.0 mmol/l), and in 29 healthy controls (cholesterol<6.0 mmol/l, triglycerides<2.0 mmol/l). The molar ratio of IGF-I/IGFBP-3 was used as a measure of free IGF-I. IHC subjects differed from controls by lower total IGF-I (164+/-60 vs. 209+/-73 ng/ml, p=0.01) and IGF-I /IGFBP-3 ratio (0.14+/-0.05 vs. 0.17+/-0.04, p=0.04). Compared to controls, MHL subjects had lower total IGF-I (153+/-54 ng/ml, p=0.0002) and IGFBP-3 (2.8+/-0.6 mg/ml, p<0.0001), but higher IGF-I/IGFBP-3 ratio (0.25+/-0.06, p<0.0001). Differences remained significant after the adjustment for clinical and biochemical covariates, except for triglycerides. Patients with both IHC and MHL have lower total IGF-I compared to controls. The mechanism is presumably different in IHC and MHL. Because of prominent reduction of IGFBP-3 in patients with MHL, they have reduced total IGF-I despite the actual elevation IGF-I/IGFBP-3 ratio as a surrogate of free IGF-I.  相似文献

Adrenocortical influence on uropygial gland of 10-day old male white leghorn chicken was assessed by suppressing glucocorticoid level with metyrapone and following corticosterone and deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOC) treatments (im), 100 micrograms each on alternate day for a period of 15 days. Metyrapone treatment resulted in significant atrophy of the uropygial gland with a severe regression of the glandular alveoli due to cytopycnosis, cellular disintegration and drastic cell loss. Concomitantly, there was a depletion of glandular lipid and its diester wax fraction. Corticosterone, administered simultaneously with metyrapone, counteracted severe adverse effects of the latter on the uropygial gland. In the normal chicken also corticosterone alone caused glandular hypertrophy with increased rate of cell renewal and cell growth within the alveoli and, to a lesser extent, augmented output of the glandular lipids. Simultaneous administration of corticosterone and testosterone propionate (TP), on the other hand, caused a moderate suppressive influence on this gland. DOC treatment alone or with metyrapone and TP failed to exert any noteworthy change in the uropygial gland excepting a moderate reduction of gland weight and a rise of glandular lipids observed after combined injections of DOC with TP and with metyrapone respectively.  相似文献

Administration of estriol (Sigma Chemical Co., U.S.A.) in the female young-adult pigeons at a dose of 50 micrograms/bird/day for 7 consecutive days caused atrophy of the uropygial gland, associated with increased cytopycnosis and drastic cell loss within the holocrine alveoli and reduction in the content of the glandular lipids. Probable mode of action of this steroid upon the uropygial gland has been suggested in the light of the recent data on its anti-estradiol property manifested in rat uterus.  相似文献

Pathogens such as bacteria, fungi and malaria and related haemosporidians provoke negative effects on the fitness of their hosts. Animals have developed a range of defensive mechanisms to resist or eliminate these parasitic infections and their negative fitness costs. The uropygial gland secretion has been proposed to act as defensive barrier of skin and plumage in the fight against bacteria and fungi, and may prevent birds from acquiring haemosporidian infections. Thus, the secretion of uropygial glands of birds may favour survival of individuals. However, whether uropygial gland secretion influence survival remains unknown. Here we explore if the size of the uropygial gland and malaria infection influence survival of house martins Delichon urbica. We showed, for the first time, that the volume of the uropygial gland positively predicted survival prospects of malaria infected house martins. Malaria infected birds had the lowest probability of survival, with the effect of gland size on survival prospects depending on infection: infected house martins with larger uropygial glands were better able to survive to the next breeding season, while infected birds with small uropygial glands were not. These results highlight the importance of uropygial gland secretion in the life history of wild birds.  相似文献

Medium-chain triacylglycerol (MCT) oil is currently marketed for athletes as an ergogenic aid for optimal performance. Research assessing the blood lipid response of humans to MCT consumption is very limited and inconclusive. In this randomized cross-over study, male endurance runners (aged 30.5 +/- 5.5 years) were instructed to consume a low-fat diet (approximately 15% of energy) and consume either supplemental MCT oil (30 g twice each day) or long-chain triacylglycerol (LCT) oil (28 g corn oil twice each day) for 14 days. Each dietary trial was separated by at least 3 weeks. At the end of each trial, fasting blood samples were collected and analyzed for serum concentrations of total cholesterol (TC), high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), and triacylglycerol (TG). Concentrations of TC (3.83 +/- 0.12 vs. 3.41 +/- 0.15 mmol/L, P = 0.004), LDL-C (1.76 +/- 0.12 vs. 1.51 +/- 0.14 mmol/L, P = 0.033), and TG (1.26 +/- 0.14 vs. 0.98 +/- 0.12 mmol/L, P = 0.006) were higher following the MCT trial than following the LCT trial, respectively. HDL-C concentration did not differ significantly between trials (MCT 1.48 +/- 0.05 mmol/L vs. LCT 1.45 +/- 0.04 mmol/L, P = 0.465). Although blood lipids remained within desirable ranges established by the National Cholesterol Education Program, these results suggest that consumption of MCT oil for 2 weeks negatively alters the blood lipid profile of athletes. Future studies should determine the effects of longer periods of MCT supplementation on serum lipids of exercisers and other groups of individuals. With little data suggesting that MCT are ergogenic, the adverse effects of MCT on blood lipid concentrations may outweigh any proposed benefits for athletes.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of 3-weeks stationary cardiac rehabilitation on plasma lipids level in patients with CHD. The study included 444 consecutive patients (364 male and 80 female, mean age 58 +/- 9 year) with CHD who underwent 3-weeks stationary cardiac rehabilitation. Patients were divided into groups depending on their baseline levels of cholesterol and medication therapy: patients with normal (< 5 mmol/L, group I, 129 patients) and elevate plasma level of Total cholesterol (> 5 mmol/L, group II, 315 patients) and subgroups Ia and IIa (with statin in therapy), Ib and IIb (without statin in therapy). After 3-weeks cardiac rehabilitation, the levels of Total cholesterol 5.75 +/- 1.34 vs. 5.17 +/- 1.08 mmol/l; p < 0.001, triglycerides 2.04 +/- 1.33 vs. 1.81 +/- 1.06 mmol/L; p = 0.004, LDL-cholesterol 3.77 +/- 1.14 vs. 3.21 +/- 0.96 mmol/L; p < 0.001 were significantly lower while the level of HDL-cholesterol 0.94 +/- 0.28 vs. 0.99 +/- 0.27 mmol/L; p = 0.008 were significantly higher in comparison with the baseline values. Furthermore, we found significant changes in lipid profile at the end of rehabilitation in each group of patients compared with the baseline values. There were no significant differences in plasma lipids level between group of patients with or without statin in therapy at the end of rehabilitation. The results of this study suggest that moderate regular physical activity and diet alone or in combination with hypolipidemic drugs already after 3 weeks have a favourable effect on plasma lipids level and should be propagate in the prevention of CHD.  相似文献

The influence of short-(7 days) and long-term (28 days) hypokinesia on 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 metabolism was investigated in rats fed on a normal calcium (0.6%), normal phosphorus (0.6%), vitamin D-supplemented diet. The animals were given a single intraperitoneal dose of tritiated [26,27-3H]25(OH)D3 (200 pmol) eighteen hours before sacrifice. [3H]Labelled vitamin D3 metabolites were separated by high performance liquid chromatographic procedure, and their radioactivity levels in serum, kidney, intestinal mucosa and femoral bone were measured. Long-term hypokinesia resulted in decreased levels of [3H]1.25(OH)2D3 and increased levels of [3H]24.25(OH)2D3 in serum and kidney (3.15 +/- 0.62 vs. 4.33 +/- 0.41% and 5.34 +/- 0.69 vs. 3.76 +/- 0.29% for [3H]1.25(OH)2D3 and [3H]24.25(OH)2D3 in serum; 7.52 +/- 0.69 vs. 11.6 +/- 0.79% and 9.33 +/- 0.55 vs. 5.94 +/- 0.24% for those in kidney). The levels of [3H]1.25(OH)2D3 as well as of [3H] 24.25(OH)2D3 were decreased in intestinal mucosa and bone (21.5 +/- 1.46 vs. 30.1 +/- 3.04% and 7.30 +/- 0.58 vs. 9.18 +/- 0.78% for [3H]1.25(OH)2D3 and [3H]24.25(OH)2D3 in intestinal mucosa; 6.39 +/- 06.5 vs. 11.5 +/- 1.64% and 7.78 +/- 0.71 vs. 13.9 +/- 1.28% for those in bone). The data obtained suggest a suppressed synthesis of 1.25(OH)2D3 and enhanced production of 24.25(OH)2D3 in kidney as well as a diminished binding of 24.25(OH)2D3 in intestinal mucosa and bone in hypothetic rats. Possible causes of variations in biosynthesis of vitamin D3 active metabolites, and role of these variations in the disorders of calcium metabolism and bone state during hypokinesia are discussed.  相似文献

Potentially, pathogenic bacteria are one of the main infective agents against which a battery of chemical and physical barriers has evolved in animals. Among these are the secretions by the exocrine uropygial gland in birds. The antimicrobial properties of uropygial secretions may prevent colonization and growth of microorganisms on feathers, skin and eggshells. However, uropygial gland secretions also favour the proliferation of feather mites that feed on secretions and microorganisms living on feathers that would otherwise reach eggshells during incubation if not consumed by feather mites. Therefore, at the interspecific level, uropygial gland size (as an index of volume of uropygial secretion) should be positively related to eggshell bacterial load (i.e. the risk of egg infection), whereas eggshell bacterial loads may be negatively related to abundance of feather mites eating bacteria. Here, we explore these previously untested predictions in a comparative framework using information on eggshell bacterial loads, uropygial gland size, diversity and abundance of feather mites and hatching success of 22 species of birds. The size of the uropygial gland was positively related to eggshell bacterial loads (mesophilic bacteria and Enterobacteriaceae), and bird species with higher diversity and abundance of feather mites harboured lower bacterial density on their eggshells (Enterococcus and Staphylococcus), in accordance with the hypothesis. Importantly, eggshell bacterial loads of mesophilic bacteria, Enterococcus and Enterobacteriaceae were negatively associated with hatching success, allowing us to interpret these interspecific relationships in a functional scenario, where both uropygial glands and mutualistic feather mites independently reduce the negative effects of pathogenic bacteria on avian fitness.  相似文献

Parasites are globally widespread pathogenic organisms, which impose important selective forces upon their hosts. Thus, in accordance with the Adjustment to parasite pressure hypothesis, it is expected that defenses among hosts vary relative to the selective pressure imposed by parasites. According to the latitudinal gradient in diversity, species richness and abundance of parasites peak near the equator. The uropygial gland is an important defensive exocrine gland against pathogens in birds. Size of the uropygial gland has been proposed to vary among species of birds because of divergent selection by pathogens on their hosts. Therefore, we should expect that bird species from the tropics should have relatively larger uropygial glands for their body size than species from higher latitudes. However, this hypothesis has not yet been explored. Here, we analyze the size of the uropygial gland of 1719 individual birds belonging to 36 bird species from 3 Neotropical (Peru) and 3 temperate areas (Spain). Relative uropygial gland volume was 12.52% larger in bird species from the tropics than from temperate areas. This finding is consistent with the relative size of this defensive organ being driven by selective pressures imposed by parasites. We also explored the potential role of this gland as a means of avoiding haemosporidian infection, showing that species with large uropygial glands for their body size tend to have lower mean prevalence of haemosporidian infection, regardless of their geographical origin. This result provides additional support for the assumption that secretions from the uropygial gland reduce the likelihood of becoming infected with haemosporidians.  相似文献

We studied glucose oxidation (Glu(ox)) and glycogen degradation during 140 min of constant-load [steady-state (SS)] and variable-intensity (VI) cycling of the same average power output, immediately followed by a 20-km performance ride [time trial (TT)]. Six trained cyclists each performed four trials: two experimental bouts (SS and VI) in which muscle biopsies were taken before and after 140 min of exercise for determination of glycogen and periodic acid-Schiff's staining; and two similar trials without biopsies but incorporating the TT. During two of the experimental rides, subjects ingested a 5 g/100 ml [U-(14)C]glucose solution to determine rates of Glu(ox). Values were similar between SS and VI trials: O(2) consumption (3.08 +/- 0.02 vs. 3.15 +/- 0.03 l/min), energy expenditure (901 +/- 40 vs. 904 +/- 58 J x kg(-1) x min(-1)), heart rate (156 +/- 1 vs. 160 +/- 1 beats/min), and rating of perceived exertion (12.6 +/- 0.6 vs. 12.7 +/- 0.7). However, the area under the curve for plasma lactate concentration vs. time was significantly greater during VI than SS (29.1 +/- 3.9 vs. 24.6 +/- 3. 7 mM/140 min; P = 0.03). VI resulted in a 49% reduction in total muscle glycogen utilization vs. 65% for SS, while total Glu(ox) was higher (99.2 +/- 5.3 vs. 83.9 +/- 5.2 g/140 min; P < 0.05). The number of glycogen-depleted type I muscle fibers at the end of 140 min was 98% after SS but only 59% after VI. Conversely, the number of type II fibers that showed reduced periodic acid-Schiff's staining was 1% after SS vs. 10% after VI. Despite these metabolic differences, subsequent TT performance was similar (29.14 +/- 0.9 vs. 30.5 +/- 0.9 min for SS vs. VI). These results indicate that whole body metabolic and cardiovascular responses to 140 min of either SS or VI exercise at the same average intensity are similar, despite differences in skeletal muscle carbohydrate metabolism and recruitment.  相似文献

In order to investigate a possible functional relationship between the submandibular salivary gland (SSG) and the central nervous system (CNS), we have extirpated the salivary organs from thirty male rats. Twenty days after ablation both the pineal glands and the cervical superior ganglions (CSG) were dissected, homogenized and frozen until AMPc and TOH were assayed respectively. We observed a significant decrease in pineal AMPc (53.9 +/- 6.2 vs 76.1 +/- 7.6% of maximum value; p less than 0.02) which seems to be linked with a significant drop in TOH activity measured at CSG level (1.5 +/- 0.6 vs 3.7 +/- 0.9 nmoles of DOPA/h/pair GCS; p less than 0.03). Our results suggest that both findings might be due to the lack of NGF normally reaching the CSG from SSG. This data reinforces the idea of a functional link between SSG and CNS via the pineal gland.  相似文献

The amounts of calcium and strontium were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) in saccular and utricular inner ear otoliths (sagittae and lapilli, respectively) of developing cichlid fish. These fish had been maintained for 22 days at 3-g hypergravity conditions within a centrifuge. During this time-span, the animals completed their ontogenetic development from hatch to the free-swimming stage. Neither the morphogenetic development nor the timely onset and gain of performance of the swimming behaviour was impaired by the experimental conditions. Experimental and control animals also did not differ concerning their size (total length). ICP-MS revealed that the otoliths contained significantly less calcium (in microg/otolith) after hyper-g exposure compared to parallelly raised 1-g control specimens (lapilli: 0.74+/-0.21 vs. 1.16+/-0.41; sagittae: 2.09+/-0.49 vs. 2.76+/-0.47). The content of strontium (in microg/otolith: lapilli: 0.0044+/-0.0023 vs. 0.0022+/-0.0013; sagittae: 0.0094+/-0.0026 vs. 0.0081+/-0.0016) and, consequently, the Sr/Ca ratio (Sr/Cax100) was increased (lapilli: 0.607+/-0.267 vs. 0.201+/-0.12; sagittae: 0.439+/-0.093 vs. 0.301+/-0.086). Since the calcium content can be taken as a proxy for otolith weight, and because parallelly undertaken morphometric investigations revealed smaller otoliths (maximum radius and surface area) due to hyper-g exposure, the results suggest that the growth of otoliths at hyper-g is slowed down. Since the concentration of trace elements incorporated into otoliths is likely based on the composition of the respective protein matrix, our findings suggest that the protein metabolism is affected by hypergravity.  相似文献

Recent interest has focused on findings that drugs used to lower blood pressure may adversely modify plasma lipids and lipoprotein metabolism. This observation may explain why pharmacologic control of hypertension has failed to reduce the incidence of morbidity and mortality from coronary artery disease. The present study aims to evaluate the effect of TA-3090, a new calcium channel blocker, on fasting plasma lipids and lipoproteins, as well as on processes of intestinal fat absorption. Rats were treated by gavage with TA-3090 (10 mg/kg twice daily) for 4 days and compared with controls (n = 6 per group). Plasma cholesterol was increased in the treated group to (mean +/- SE) 74 +/- 2 vs 60 +/- 4 mg/dl (P less than 0.01), due mainly to an increased high density lipoprotein-cholesterol level (50 +/- 2 vs 37 +/- 3 mg/dl, P less than 0.005). Notably plasma triglycerides (TG) and low density lipoprotein-cholesterol were not significantly affected. Another group of TA-3090-treated animals was given an intraduodenal fat meal, and the rise in plasma TG and chylomicrons followed over 4 hr. Postprandial hypertriglyceridemia and chylomicronemia were significantly lower at 2 hr (P less than 0.05) and 3 hr (P less than 0.01) compared with controls. In a separate group of animals, the addition of TA-3090 to a 2% intralipid infusion intraduodenally was associated with significantly reduced TG and chylomicron-TG transport into lymph (P less than 0.05). Furthermore, experiments in rats pretreated with TA-3090 intraperitoneally and then given 2% intralipid intraduodenally were shown to have a significant decrease in mean flow rate (27%), TG transport (31%) and chylomicron-TG output (37%), when compared with controls. In vitro studies using jejunal organ culture to examine the effect of TA-3090 on intracellular lipid synthesis and secretion revealed that the addition of the drug to the medium resulted in significantly decreased TG synthesis and secretion. These data suggest that TA-3090 could be effective in increasing HDL-cholesterol and reducing postprandial chylomicronemia. The uropygial gland of the quail, a sebaceous-like gland, has been proven to be androgen-dependent. Waxes secreted by this gland consist of fatty acids esterified by alkane-2,3-diols [12]. In castrated quails, the relative concentration of dodecane diol was enhanced after testosterone treatment; but 5 alpha-DHT could not evoke any increase in the relative concentration of dodecane diol. It is not possible from our present results to know if this lack of gland response to DHT administration is related to a high level of DHT metabolism in the gland cells or to a decreased affinity of the androgen receptor for DHT. However, because of the high similarity existing between uropygial gland of birds and mammalian sebaceous glands, these results give rise to the question of the true role of DHT in mammalian sebaceous glands.  相似文献

The effect of L-arginine on the pattern of lipids and lipoproteins in normal and diabetic rats was studied. Three groups of 48 rats were studied during 12 days and compared with a control group (Group I, n = 5). Group I consisted of normal rats not treated with L-arginine. Group II. Normal rats treated with 10 mM L-arginine (i.p.). Group III. Diabetic rats (alloxan 120 mg/kg, i.p.) not treated (diabetic control). Group IV. Diabetic rats treated with 10 mM L-arginine (i.p.). The rats of each group were divided in subgroups of four each. Rats were anesthetized and blood was taken from aorta to determine glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol, total lipids, and low (LDL) and high density lipoproteins (HDL) and their corresponding apoproteins (Apo A-I and Apo B-100). We observed that the alloxan concentration used in this study reproduces the clinical manifestations of disease including hyperglycemia (from 132.5 +/- 7.6 to 544.3 +/- 16.9 mg/dL) in 96 h. As a consequence the levels of triglycerides, cholesterol, total lipids, and LDL and its apoprotein Apo B-100 were increased, whereas HDL and its apoprotein Apo A-I were diminished. The L-arginine injection tends to normalize the glycemia from 24 h; similarly, hyperlipidemia (triglycerides from 924.7 +/- 220.1 to 68.5 +/- 8.4 mg/dL, cholesterol from 107.7 +/- 0.6 to 64.5 +/- 4.2 mg/dL, LDL from 24.2 +/- 2.5 to 8.0 +/- 2.9 mg/dL) was also diminished. These results suggest that the beneficial effect of L-arginine administration on serum glucose values and lipid levels in diabetic rats can be mediated by polyamine formation, although the effect of L-arginine on insulin release as observed by other authors is not discarded.  相似文献
